Frankly, it’s a little frightening. Speaking of scary things…if you live for Halloween, you’re in luck. The tri-state is home to some of the most creative, horror-filled haunted houses around not to mention a number of fun events – including Here Come the Mummies at the Victory on October 29 – to help celebrate this unique holiday. upcoming events EVILLE STUDIOS Carnival of Carnage & Asylum of the Walking Dead The tri-state’s only interactive haunted house is heavy on the horror but more fun than you can imagine

the tri-state by Scare Factor Haunt Review for the last three years. So, there’s a good reason why it’s a “lit” environment. They want you to actually see what they’ve created. You’re a part of it all; you’re involved in it and not just walking by, observing everything. As the story goes, the building at 210 N. Fulton Ave. was originally an asylum that sat dormant for over a century until it was reopened several years ago – and as we all know, old ghosts should never be disturbed. The undead have since been terrorizing everyone that enters, including the thousands of people that were brave enough to confront them at Eville Studios last Halloween. This year, among other things, you’ll get the opportunity to take a coffin simulator ride and shoot zombies outside with a paintball gun. The goal of Eville Studios used to be to make it “so scary that you’d pee your pants” but now the main focus is to ensure that people simply have a good time. Don’t be mistaken, it’s still creepy as hell – and for those who just can’t get enough horror, there’s an afterhours “extreme haunt” called Black Out. This appointment-only haunted house experience (reservations through Facebook) requires each participant to sign a waiver and be willing and able to witness their fears. Spaces fill up very quickly, so be sure to secure your spot soon! At the end of the Eville Studios run this year, a trophy will be awarded to this season’s Best Zombie Hunter. You can go through the haunted house as many times as you like and accrue points or, rather, kills. The results will be announced after Halloween. Created and designed by a staff with over 30 years of experience, Eville Studios is a wonder of set design, makeup and theatricality. Indeed, the preparations for this truly frightening haunted house are exhaustive and intensive. The process takes up the better part of a year beginning with an initial brainstorming session during which the Eville

main players conjure up their own monsters and creepy effects, utilizing computer animation and controlled props to produce one of the most technologically advanced haunted houses in the tri-state – and the only interactive experience (i.e., you actually get a black ops battle rifle to pursue the zombies). Not surprisingly, Eville Studios was voted #1 in

Perhaps the best thing about Eville Studios is that they offer two haunted houses for the price of one – in 3D terror vision, no less. One Man Breaking Bad Distilling the “greatest TV show of all-time” down to 60 minutes of classic lines and black comedy it was definitely a worthwhile experience.

A actor Miles Allen is either ridiculously ambitious or a little nuts – maybe both. Originally from Illinois, the twentysomething with a gift for mimicry headed out to the west coast right after college in pursuit of his dream: making it in the film and television industry. Predictably, he struggled. But then something quite unexpected happened. Long a fan – obsessively so – of AMC’s dark drama Breaking Bad, Allen uploaded a video to YouTube in which he posed as a homeless man acting out various scenes from the series on the streets of LA. It caught fire. Over a million views later, he received a call from an Australian producer interested in developing a one man show - five seasons of Breaking Bad condensed into one hour. All credit to Allen, he was up for the challenge. The result, One Man Breaking Bad, is a tour de force of Allen’s talent and love for what he unequivocally calls “the greatest TV show of all time.” He nails every character, particularly small-time meth dealer, Jesse Pinkman, who serves as the narrator. After a highly successful debut in Australia last year, Allen took the show to Scotland, followed by a tour of the UK. Finally, he’s getting the opportunity to bring One Man

Breaking Bad to America, where the series was created and filmed. Allen and his cast of iconic characters arrive at the Victory Theatre on October 13. He kindly spoke with News4U ahead of the U.S. tour. Just how difficult was the process of breaking down Breaking Bad? It’s been an organically involving process. The show has never really been finished. I’m happy with it, but there have been new developments made; it’s been re-edited several times for different audiences. The main goal was just making sure that I stayed true to the characters and the nature of Breaking Bad. I didn’t want it to be footnotes – I wanted it to have its own comedic ethos and be a parody walking through it. The difficult part was figuring out how to keep the storyline and stay true to Breaking Bad but also pull out the best comedy bits and character nuances that people like about the show. It was no easy task, but

What was going through your mind before that first performance having been a struggling actor - and then suddenly you’re doing a one man show? I thought, ‘what in the heck am I doing’? I mean, I premiered the show in Melbourne, Australia rather than my home country where the show was shot. Instead, I went halfway across the world (laughs). I thought, ‘who is going to come and see me reenact the show Breaking Bad’? I really was worried it was going to be a complete flop. But, hey, at least I’ll get a free trip to Australia - at least I’ll get to see some kangaroos (laughs). But all my insecurities were unfounded which is often the case with actors and our self-deprecating judgments. The audience really took to me and they enjoyed the show which got great reviews. I guess it’s a really unique form of comedy – not traditional stand-up. It’s been the trip of a lifetime, that’s for sure. How has the success of the show affected you personally? Have you been able to stay grounded?

It’s definitely a challenge doing a one man show, traveling by myself to all these countries. I’d like to think that for the most part I’ve kept my head on straight as much as I can. But there are definitely times when I’ve been like, ‘I miss my family’ (mocks crying). I’d never really traveled before this show and now I’m going all over the world and getting paid to do it. It’s been a real widening of my perspective. I can’t even put a value on it. What’s been the general audience reaction to the show – do they yell out or dress up? Oh, man – I have people coming to the shows dressed as Heisenberg (Walter White alias). Breaking Bad is really the first drama I’ve seen with a cult following. I’ve seen it with fantasy and sci-fi but never with a drama. That really speaks to the popularity of the show – how it permeated culture. The real joy of performing this show is being in a room with a group of fellow Breaking Baddicts - getting to enjoy the experience. It’s really a comedic nostalgia trip. People are shouting out and there’s audience participation. We’re all reliving the show together. Afterwards, it’s great talking to the fans – some ask me to call their girlfriend a ‘b*tch’. Without them, I wouldn’t have a career. Has there been any response from the Breaking Bad creators or actors? I know that Bob Odenkirk (Saul Goodman) has the show on his radar. We’ll be doing an Albuquerque show so an invitation has been extended, and I’m excited to see if he and Jonathan Banks (Mike Ehrmantraut) come out. The show is really a thank you to them. here’s always a lot of excitement at the start of every IceMen season, but this year, it’s on a whole other level. Head Coach Al Sims took over the team last January, but it was a chaotic time for the franchise, and he simply didn’t have the opportunity to work his magic. Now, that’s all changed. With an unparalleled coaching resume peppered with championships and accolades not to mention his days as a NHL player with the Bruins, Whalers and Kings, Sims is the real deal. Simply put, the IceMen are in very good hands. Sims is busy preparing the team for their opening face-off with the Indy Fuel at the Ford Center on October 17, but he kindly took time to talk about the new season. Obviously, your resume speaks for itself. With all of your experience, what made you want to come to Evansville and coach the IceMen? I think it’s a challenge for me to come in and turn around a team that’s had four coaches in three years and a disappointing record and try to make it a success. You know, we get great crowds with limited success, and I can only imagine what it would be like if the team was

winning. That’s what we want to try to do this year and hopefully the next as well. Expectations are very high for this season. What are you doing differently from last year to turn things around? Being a coach who has won some championships, I know that those expectations can become real if everybody believes in them. Our expectation is to win a championship every year. We’ll try to get the players to believe by the halfway point of the season that this is something we can achieve. Obviously, you need the talent, and we’ve done a lot of searching this summer. We’ve brought three guys over from Sweden, two guys over from Czechoslovakia and one guy from France. We’ve gone all over the world to get players to come to Evansville. I think the fans will see an international product when we get on the ice for that first game on October 17, and they’ll enjoy watching players from different parts of the world. So the international players are the key to competing at the highest level this year? I think these guys that we have brought over should be good players at the ECHL level and better players than we are able to get here. The guys we’ve got coming – a goal tender, defenseman and a forward – should be impact players during the season. What’s your take on this season’s schedule for the IceMen? I think it’s fair to every team – looks like a good

one for us. The division we’re in is going to be hotly contested, and I like the way they’ve set it up with the different conferences and divisions. I think it’s going to help everybody with the travel – other than the Alaska trip, obviously (laughs). What are you hoping to see from your team for that first home game at the Ford Center? We want a lot of excitement. We want to play with a lot of energy, grit and determination – put on a display of physicality and a really good show. I hope the fans enjoy the team this year as much as we’ve enjoyed recruiting and putting all the players together. Playing before our type of crowd really pushes players to play their best. nown for an unrelenting live attack that is particularly impressive for a group of 5000 year-old “saucy specters,” Here Come the Mummies bring the funk like nobody’s business. Their tight grooves and tongue-in-cheek lyrics have made them a Bob & Tom Show favorite and garnered the band opening slots for legends like P-Funk, Al Green and Cheap Trick - even a performance at the 2012 Super Bowl Village. 2014 saw HCTM release four new EPs and cement their status as a live phenomenon. This year, the band is out on the road again, tearing it up from state to state. Keyboardist Spaz Mummy kindly fielded some tough questions ahead of HCTM’s pre-Halloween show in Evansville. Despite not having bathed in literally ages, HCTM maintain a rabid female following. Explanation? It’s because, for centuries on end, our foul rags have had pheromones “baked in.” It can’t be helped, and it ain’t broke, so… Just how close has the band come to creating the ‘ultimate riff ’? And how will you know

when you do? Close, we think, but we won’t really know until we hit it. When we do, we believe we’ll be transported post-haste to the afterlife, where we’ll probably play music, seek out great local beer, and cavort with sexy ladies. What’s behind the surge in productivity over the last five years? You’re all undead, so time is clearly not against you.. It’s possible that neurons left intact during the rather crude process of mummification are forging new pathways due to intense stimulation since our discovery, and that this is behind the surge. That, or the fact that we have our own studio now. Humor and outfits aside, HCTM are one of the tightest bands in music today. Do you ever worry that the concept overshadows the talent? We’re sort of limited as to our appearance, since our decrepit flesh has bonded irrevocably to our bandages, but the short answer is, no, we don’t worry. We feel because we have tapped into something greater than ourselves with our music that it will always shine.

With so many band members - all with impressive musical pedigrees - how does the songwriting and arranging process work? Does it ever come to mummy fisticuffs? There are minor skirmishes and squabbles, mainly over cookies and such. We never quarrel over music for some reason, though. Maybe it’s because we are channeling it all from a common Source- that’s with a capital “S”. The band has played Evansville before, of course, but do you think that our fair city is truly prepared for the even more terrifying funk of HCTM circa 2015? It’s a bit like skydiving - there’s no school you can go to, there are no instructors, there isn’t anything you can strap on to slow your fall; you just have to jump. Finally, Halloween shows - does it get any better for HCTM? We love Halloween, for it gives even the most straight-laced ladies a chance to parade around significantly more than half-naked. Lincoln Amphitheatre Re-imagining one of the nation’s most unique venues for entertainment For nearly 30 years, Lincoln Amphitheatre near Holiday World has served its original purpose: telling the story of Young Abe Lincoln through theatrical performances. But the 1,500 seat outdoor venue has always had the potential to be something more. After all, it’s one of the largest fully-covered amphitheatres in the nation complete with a stand-alone concession stand and box office. There’s nothing like it for miles around – and soon, thanks to the Indiana Office of Tourism Development, the Lincoln Amphitheatre will be heading in a new, exciting direction. Starting October 24 with Beatles and Rolling Stones tribute bands, Hard Day’s Night and Satisfaction, the venue is looking to expand its entertainment appeal and attract multi-generations of music fans. The plan is to book a full performance series for the coming year with higher profile acts that will increase foot traffic. In addition, the antiquated Lincoln Amphitheatre ticketing system has been updated. The venue’s new high-speed Wi-Fi system means that online ticketing is available for the first time ever – even walk-up service. Also available for the first time ever: BEER! Enough said. Even with the change in entertainment focus, the venue still intends to keep the story of Young Abe Lincoln alive, especially considering that 2016 marks the state’s bicentennial. Stories of Resilience Local non-profit organization to present an inspirational evening of courage, faith and hope Uncharted International’s mission is based on one simple belief: that given opportunity, the poor have the capacity to become self sufficient. With that in mind, their work takes them to places as far away as Central Asia, China, Myanmar and the United Arab Emirates to improve living conditions, including advocating for clean water and sanitation, health services and basic education. The non-profit organization also uses its resources to fight human trafficking, take care of the homeless and provide job skills training. On October 15, Uncharted International will present “Stories of Resilience” at the Victory Theatre, featuring co-founder and CEO of the Malala Fund, Shiza Shahid. In 2012, Malala Yousafzai was shot in the face by the Taliban on her way to school in Pakistan. She survived and subsequently was given the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 for her courage and activism. As head of the Malala Fund, Shahid leads the charge to empower girls through education. She was recently named one of Time magazine’s “30 Under 30 World Changers” and included in Forbes’ “30 Under 30” list of social entrepreneurs. The event at the Victory grew out of Uncharted International’s efforts in Kabul, Afghanistan, where over 81,000 street children are without access to education. In fact, around the world, over 600 million adolescent girls are denied a formal education because of social, economic, legal and political factors. Second Annual Fiesta Evansville 2015 celebration will be bigger, better, more colorful Fiesta Evansville is the city’s Hispanic Heritage Month and Diversity Celebration. At last year’s inaugural event, more than 1,200 people attended, and the turnout is expected to be even greater for the second gathering at Wesselman Park on October 11. On the horizon for the 2015-16 EPO season is Rossini’s The Barber of Seville (with Asheville Lyric Opera), the second Classics Series offering. Set for mid-November, this fullystaged opera will feature the Men’s Chorus from UE Opera and Evansville Philharmonic Chorus. here was hardly a better way to kick off nine exciting months of EPO performances than with an opening night showing by violinist Joshua Bell on September 27. The Grammywinning Indiana native made for the perfect introduction to a starstudded season filled with diversity. Long considered one of the finest violinists in the world, Bell’s virtuosity was on clear display throughout as he teamed with the EPO for beautiful renditions of classic pieces by Brahms, Bruch and Beethoven. ou know what that means! We get to save a little money on our Vectren bill (lol). I mean, it’s for the Fall Festival (woot woot)! While you’re enjoying that delicious food, don’t forget to save energy for a workout. What’s your favorite thing about fall? I love fall fashion! I just love wearing fall colors, boots, hoodies, denim, etc. This is the time of year you want your fashion skills to be on point. You can no longer get

It’s one of the most-asked questions around. When things go wrong, it’s always tempting to believe that God could have prevented it. When things go right, we tend to think that “we’re lucky” or that we deserved it. The simple truth is that life isn’t simple, easy, or pain-free.

The question we might want to ask is, “what are we doing about it?” How much are we doing to discover the cure for cancer? What are we doing about global warming and the weather changes it’s already producing? What are we doing to help those who have lost everything to an inferno? Disease, suffering, and disaster have little – if anything – to do with God. God doesn’t use such things as punishment. The more difficult question is: what are we doing about it? What is the part we are to play? What are our responsibilities?

Lips It looks like we are taking a dip back into the 90s when it comes to lip colors. Think burgundy, deep plum, and berry shades. Eyes Bronze eye shadow is a must for your collection. Graphic liner is still in, however, we’re moving away from the traditional cat eye. This year, have a little more fun with the winged tip. Try a double wing or go a little bit thicker. The famous smoky eye is still trending, but, it seems to be getting less dramatic. This makes it easier to do. So easy, you can do it with using black and brown liner. Cheeks This year is all about a flushed cheek. If you’re not sure what this looks like, think about how your cheeks look on a cold winter day.

Brows Try out the feathered brow look. To achieve this look, you still want to keep the brow well groomed and lightly filled (I recommend filling with the Anastasia Brow Wiz). Enigma Nachos Newburgh’s newest hotspot, Enigma, offers a slew of enticing menu items, not just a laundry list of top-shelf tequila. Of course, the tequila is important to all things Enigma- not only is it a main ingredient in most of their specialty cocktails and shots, but also many of their dishes. Nachos are often a bar and restaurant favorite across the board, but Enigma’s are a cut above the rest. This heaping appetizer of crispy tortilla chips is smothered in seasoned, juicy chicken (or chili/ vegetarian), melted cheddar-jack cheese, fresh pico de gallo, spicy jalapenos, sour cream, and homemade guacamole. Despite the delicious conglomeration of toppings, there is hardly a bare chip to be found, and the crunch remains all the way to the bottom. The best part? Tequila queso. An original recipe, this sauce is the final ingredient that sets Enigma’s nachos apart.

hen Robert Morphew established his sauce company, Sir Dax Longfellow BBQ, early last year, the idea of opening a restaurant centered around it was merely a dream. However, a year and a half later, Longfellow BBQ & Barr now occupies the riverfront staple of Marina Pointe. Open since August 1, Longfellow has quickly gained a loyal following due to its fresh barbecue, cold beer, and beautiful setting. Colorful picnic tables and bright flowers dot the relaxed, breezy patio overlooking the Ohio, and the summery bar inside caters to the 21 and over crowd, offering a full menu and fully-stocked bar. There are many elements to be considered when judging good barbecue, and one of those is sauce. Longfellow offers two: The Original is thinner, with a vinegar/ apple juice base, both sweet and sour, and

complementary to the salty smoked meat. For a thicker option with more heat - black pepper, to be specific - the Thick-n-Sticky is worth the mess and definitely requires more than just one napkin. Although their sauces are stand-alone delicious, their fresh, locallysourced meat options are perfect vehicles. Choose from ribs, pulled pork, turkey, salmon, brisket, chicken, sausage, or rib tips, all of which come from Creation Gardens or local butcher shops. Since it’s prepared daily and never frozen or reheated, your best bet is to get there earlier for more options - when offering this level of quality and refusing to budge, menu items sometimes run out. I was offered a combination platter, a hefty and reasonably priced tray of pork, brisket, sausage and ribs. Creamy coleslaw, mustard potato salad, and homemade baked beans made the platter complete and a satisfactory meal to enjoy while taking in the scenery. And

the menu doesn’t stop there - with appetizers such as a fruit platter, salads, pizza, and sandwiches including a black bean burger, Longfellow has something for any appetite. Besides great barbecue, Morphew is trying to create an experience- “Good food till dinnertime, then party.” They are in the process of building a new stage for live entertainment, and Halloween at Longfellow is sure to be a bash. International touring band and local favorite Osiella will be performing Friday and Saturday of Halloween weekend, with a costume party for kids on Saturday afternoon and a costume contest for adults that night. ore than just a tequila bar, Newburgh’s swankiest new spot is a sapphire in the rough. Of course, there’s tequila, but Enigma, located just next door to Jalisco’s, their sister restaurant, also hosts live music, an impressive menu crafted by owner Raul Sanchez, lunch specials, and is a booming nightlife destination. Enigma is correct - there’s almost a club-feel but still an intimacy that allows such an establishment to welcome a variety of crowds. In the most hospitable of fashions, manager Samantha Bradbury first whipped up two specialty cocktails - an Ocean Splash and an Enigma Margarita. The first was a fruity concoction but not too sweet, made with Blue Caracao, blood orange vodka (yum), sour mix, and simple syrup. Not to be outdone, the margarita was made with Tequila Cazadores reposado and unlike most margaritas, not

sour, but smooth and smoky. We were then warned of something called a “Tower of Terror,” but first the food menu. A heaping appetizer of nachos was more than enough to start with - an array of seasoned, juicy chicken, cheddar jack cheese, pico de gallo, jalapenos, sour cream, guacamole, and crispy tortilla chips that never seemed to get soggy despite the weight of the toppings. True to the bar and grill’s eclectic menu, the next creation was an Enigma favorite - Cajun Chicken Alfredo. Spicy and satisfying, it’s a mixture of grilled chicken, penne, cajun alfredo sauce, cherry tomatoes, red onions, and spinach. Topped with parmesan cheese, it’s definitely a flavor explosion. For lighter fare, they offer a Tequila Citrus Salmon plated beautifully with mashed potatoes and asparagus. The salmon has a mild flavor on the inside, but is encrusted with a tequila/orange

glaze and a crunch that is complementary to the flaky texture. Next trip: the popular Ham & Cheese Toastie, a pile of thinly-sliced pork pit ham smothered in cheddar cheese and smoked bacon atop crunchy sourdough. Already falling in love, the deal was sealed with the aforementioned Tower of Terror. As Bradbury warned, “You will go through a range of emotions with this shot.” A mix of grenadine and 110 proof tequila (taken first) is stacked on an upside-down shot of orange juice which is released into a glass of (more) 110 proof tequila, Blue Caracao, and Sprite. Reid’s Orchard Apple Festival 2015 Established in 1873(!!), Reid’s Orchard has been around for generations – a family farm dedicated to bringing the community together. This mission is what ultimately led to the creation of the Apple Festival by current owners Billy and Kathy Reid as they sought a way to gather people from the area to celebrate, educate and provide for one another. In short, the event was born from the idea of giving back and promoting homegrown produce. After checking out other regional festivals, the Reids’ vision for their own event crystallized as they organized crafters, food booths, wagon rides and more. Apple Festival may have started small, but it’s grown every year. In fact, it’s been named a Top 10 event by the Kentucky Tourism Council and a Top 20 event by the southeast Tourism Society. This annual fall celebration now features 90 handmade craft booths, 20 carnival rides and activities (provided by Casey Rides) for all age groups, plenty of food booths and live entertainment. The Reids also partner with several Owensboro non-profit organizations to facilitate fundraisers during the two day event. Most importantly, Apple Festival is a family affair. There’s a playground called “Reidland” where kids can be kids and enjoy the afternoon. This area also includes a petting zoo and horse rides. It’s no wonder that people come from all over the tri-state to spend the weekend at Apple Festival. There’s something for everyone at this beloved western KY event! Former Helfrich Hills concessions area now a nightlife hotspot with an incredible view Toast owners Marcin and Kassy Lauer are full of great ideas. Earlier this year, they transformed the space inside the Helfrich Hills clubhouse, renovating and redecorating it out of their own pockets. The resulting eatery and bar with an air of sophistication opened in March to great reviews. In particular, the food – made fresh from mostly local ingredients – immediately won over customers. And soon the Lauers will unveil a new and improved menu featuring gourmet burgers, lasagna and Polish meals. But the most exciting thing happening at Toast right now is the nightlife. • Sip N’ Spin Monday: Bring your own vinyl and participate in local art classes. • College Thursday: An 18 and over dance party that will soon include open mic. No other venue in town offers college kids the opportunity to perform. • Friday Karaoke: Karaoke and dance music until 3 a.m. • Saturday Night Live & Jive: Live acoustic music during dinner from 6-9 p.m. Karaoke until 3 a.m. And don’t forget about Sunday. Toast has live music and a brunch buffet from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.! In addition to the nightly entertainment, Toast features monthly special events that almost always sell-out. A Catalina Wine Mixer (limited to 250 people) is scheduled for October 10 with unlimited wine sampling, hors d’ oeuvres and helicopter races. On October 22, a free full dress rehearsal of the Rocky Horror Show will be staged out on the patio as a run-up to the real deal at Boogie Nights. And possibly the most entertaining event on the horizon is the Eville Roast @ Toast on October 24. That’s right - a night of comedy at the expense of our fair city. It doesn’t get much better. It’s Halloween time and that means that all the great stout beers are rolling into the market. Stouts can come in different styles such as a porter, milk stout, dry or Irish, chocolate, oatmeal, or an imperial. They’re typically made with roasted malts, roasted barley, coffee beans and chocolate giving them that dark, thicker appearance and flavor. When customers say, “I don’t like dark beer,” that leads us to not serve them these styles of beer. But, if you really look at the flavor profiles you will see that not all dark beer is made the same. They do take some getting used to, but most stout beers are much smoother and more flavorful than your average pilsner or ale. Here are some of our favorites. Left Hand Milk Stout is very popular with our stout drinkers at Beef’s. Roasted malts and coffee make up the foundation of this sweet beer. By using milk sugar, it gives the impression of a sweet, yet creamy coffee. Bell’s Kalamazoo Stout is a full-bodied stout with plenty of roast flavor as well as hints of molasses and chocolate. Generous amounts of black and caramel malts make this stout smooth, creamy, and utterly opaque. It’s one of our favorites, and we try to keep it in stock all winter long. Founders Breakfast Stout is brewed with an abundance of flaked oats, bitter and imported chocolates, and two types of coffee. It has an intense fresh-roasted java nose topped with a frothy, cinnamon-colored head that lasts forever. What foods pair well with stout beer? I recommend a prime rib sandwich or roast beef. If you come to Beef’s, try any of our stouts with a Watterson sandwich. The combination of the stout beer and roast beef on rye bread will leave you wanting more. Have a happy Halloween and be safe.

upcoming events beginning of a very successful partnership. One thing’s for sure: there won’t be a better way to celebrate Halloween in western Kentucky. Sure, most of the Nite Shift members are now grandparents (as Brown points out with a laugh), but they can still kick up a furious racket and have the luxury of drawing from eight-plus hours of material: Three Dog Night, Willie Nelson, Steppenwolf, .38 Special, Eric Clapton, Five Finger Death Punch, Seven Mary Three, Georgia Satellites, Kentucky Headhunters, Marshall Tucker Band, Ozzy Osbourne and so much more. Truly, these guys can play just about anything. Their shows generally start with a set list, but it almost always gets tossed out after a few songs. Then it’s a free-for-all based on the mood and the audience. Nite Shift line-up: Brad Sharp: lead vocals Mike Kennedy: guitar Dave Spear: bass Walt Allen: keys Todd King: drums Ted Brown: guitar, mandolin, harmonica

Come dressed up and ready to rock out at the OCC’s preholiday party on October 24 13 years ago, Kentucky musician Ted Brown and his fellow Nite Shift members inadvertently started a Halloween tradition. “Too lazy” to put together a promo kit to secure a booking at the Owensboro Executive Inn, the band instead rented a room at the old hotel, covering it with Halloween decorations and inviting the public to join them for a good time. The investment more than paid off. By the end of the night, the place was packed and the drinks were flowing; the money was, too. As the years went by, the party got bigger and bigger right up until the 2009 fire. Nite Shift certainly weren’t responsible for the blaze, but their brand of rock and roll – everything from Lynyrd Skynyrd to the Black Keys – is hot, indeed. All kidding aside, these guys can rock with the best of them. Now they’re back and have found a great new venue to

start a great new tradition. On Saturday, October 24, Nite Shift will headline the Halloween Bash at the Owensboro Convention Center. With the community’s help, this could be the

or a scenic and refreshing meal experience, check out Another Broken Egg Cafe inside of the riverfront Holiday Inn in Owensboro. With inventive fare, a big-city feel, and an expansive view of the Ohio River, there are many reasons to add this restaurant to your foodie list. The menu is reminiscent of cafes that dot the French Quarter in New Orleans - from beignets to Lafitte’s Tortilla, the French flair is undeniable and delicious, yet the selection allows for those with other appetites and vegetarian options are plentiful and clearly marked. Upon arrival, I was first served a caramel cappuccino, and it was clear from the first taste that my first experience at Broken Egg would not be my last. My expectations were then sealed by their Fried Green Tomatoes with a twist on the typical composition. Crispy and flavorful, the fresh tomatoes were served with a jumbo lump crab cake atop fresh spinach and goat cheese, red peppers, and Creole

remoulade, a tangy cream sauce with a kick. A hearty portion, this dish is easily shareable and reasonably priced. Next, I tried the Cafe Burger, fresh and hand-pattied, dressed with carmelized onions, sun-dried tomatoes, crunchy bacon, feta cheese, fresh basil, and roasted garlic aioli, a condiment similar to mayonnaise. Served on artisan bread with a side of Mediterranean potatoes, it’s anything but ordinary, and if you’ve been searching for Eggs Benedict in the tri-state area, look no further. Another Broken Egg offers six options, ranging from traditional to Black Bean cakes with grilled tomatoes, chipotle Hollandaise, and fresh cilantro. Aside from the fact that all of their sauces are made from scratch (I’m a sauce nut), another standout tidbit about this cafe is their presentation. The Southwest Chop salad is as colorful as it is decadent, and the ingredients of romaine, spinach, turkey, mushrooms, red

onion, bacon, black beans, and chipotle ranch are shaped into a rectangle and garnished with tortilla strips, fresh avocado, and tomato. But the hefty vegetable servings don’t stop there enter their House Infused Mary, a breakfast in itself with plenty of crunchy snacks marinated in spicy tomato juice and of course, vodka. I’m not usually a fan, but it was incredible. Finally, in an unnecessary effort to ensure my return, I was served Bananas Foster, a sweet and nutty pile of bananas, pecans, and whipped cream. I can say, without hesitation, that this restaurant deserves 5 stars, but don’t take my word for it let the food speak for itself. The biggest name in Christian music hopes to “thrive” at the Owensboro Convention Center on November 10

Casting Crowns return to the tri-state almost a year to the day after playing the Ford Center in Evansville last October. This time around, the hugely successful, Georgia-based Christian band will visit the Owensboro Convention Center to continue promoting 2014’s Thrive as well as their latest release, Glorious day - Hymns of Faith. Featuring a diverse collection of contemporary tracks, the former reached number six on the Billboard charts and spawned the single, “All You’ve Ever Wanted,” while the latter is a mix of originals and covers that are mainly hymns. Over the last 15 years, Casting Crowns have built a very loyal fanbase on the backs of such massive hits as “Voice of Truth,” “East to West” and “Lifesong” and collected numerous Grammy and Dove Awards. Adam Trent: Magician Reinvented There’s a new trickster in town and he’s making traditions disappear Just when you thought you knew what magicians were all about, along comes Adam Trent. Best described as “Justin Timberlake meets David Copperfield,” he’s an entirely new breed of entertainer who puts on so much more than just a magic show. He sings, he dances, he does comedy – and yes, he performs amazing tricks. Above all, Trent’s connection with the audience is what makes him such a special talent. On October 10, Trent will bring his incredible act to the Henderson Fine Arts Center in conjunction with the Henderson Area Arts Alliance. Expect an evening like no other as he proves why he’s the youngest and only magician to ever win back to back medals in the Pro Magic Challenge. Trent was also named one of the 10 most influential youth in the nation by U.S. News & World Report Magazine. Trent started street performing at the age of 14. That “amazing/ brutal” training taught him how to command an audience by keeping things moving and incorporating different elements of entertainment. Ink & Iron Fest 2015

Family-friendly free event looks to raise Autism awareness, help defer medical costs As many of you in the tri-state may already know, Autism is the fastest-growing developmental disorder in the U.S., affecting 1 in 68 children. There is currently no medical detection or cure for the disease and treatment costs families on average$60,000 a year. And that’s why events like Ink & Iron Fest are so important and make such a big difference – both in terms of raising money and, in particular, awareness. A tattoo, motorcycle and car benefit show staged in Henderson, Ky, Ink & Iron Fest is presented by Y&M Productions. The twoday event will take place October 17-18 and feature a poker run for Autism as well as retro pin-up girls and plenty of artists and vendors selling all sorts of goods and services such as tattoos and piercings. Other highlights include food and live music and for the kids, a bouncy house, clowns, face painting and appearances by some of the most popular superheroes. The car and motorcycle shows will feature an amazing collection of classic, vintage and modern vehicles with trophies being awarded in different categories. The money raised at Ink & Iron will be used to purchase tablets for Autistic children. Tablets will be awarded at 3 p.m. on Sunday (must be present to win). Located at 735 N. around the track with Billy Egeler This is it, racing fans! The season has now concluded for the majority of our area racers and the off-season blues will take over soon. Congrats to all the racers who were able to pick up wins, reach personal goals and even win championships. Many racers never have the chance to visit victory lane in their career. It can be as elusive as a unicorn for many. Cherish those visits to victory lane any chance you can. Over the winter, several of our local racers drag their remote controlled cars out of the closets and visit Highside Hobbies in Evansville and Reo Raceway in Rockport. This is a great chance for the fans to check out their skills on a smaller scale. Heck, you may want to get into the hobby as well. Check the tracks out by searching Facebook and stop in and visit them over the off-season. This month’s article will be short and sweet. As I mentioned in several N4U “Around the Track” features, local racing is hurting; so for those of you that have attended races this year, THANK YOU for supporting our sport. I announced to my peers in September that 2015

will mark my FINAL season as a motorsports track announcer on a weekly basis. It was 21 years ago that I started announcing, and it has been an awesome ride. I’ve had the chance to meet some truly amazing people over the years, and I won’t forget where it all started. After watching the sport I am so passionate about struggle and decline so rapidly over the past couple of years, I feel there are more important things I need to be doing to help the sport. So many people complain about the direction racing is going yet nobody has stepped up to try to do anything about it. This is where I step in. I am going to attempt to form an alliance between regional tracks and help them as a consultant to bring our local love back. Tracks MUST work together and understand this does not need to be a cut-throat sport. We all want the same outcome, great car counts, great crowds and great competition. This alliance is something that has been needed for a very long time. Tracks and racers alike need to open their eyes, lose the egos and realize we are in the entertainment business. If we can’t produce a show the fans are willing to spend their entertainment dollar on, we will not have a sport. I will propose ideas to the track promoters/owners to combine “like” classes, unify rules and show our

racers and fans that they are important again. As always, I encourage you all to make plans on attending a race at your local track when the season starts back up. The Cold Stares Part 3 of 3 part series For the last two issues, we’ve detailed the music industry odyssey of one of the area’s most talented bands, The Cold Stares. Guitarist and lead singer Chris Tapp has walked us through the Nashville duo’s attempts to secure a record deal, frankly discussing the highs and lows of a career punctuated by a series of near misses and a major health scare that nearly derailed the entire operation. Through it all, Tapp and drummer Brian Mullins have persevered. In fact, the two blues rockers are currently riding a wave of success with the release of a pair of fantastic new EPs, Resonator and Look Over Yonder Hill, plus a fascinating documentary that recently aired on PBS.

For the final installment of this three part series, Tapp defends the decision to go the independent route and chronicles the thrill of working with famed LA producer Mark Needham. You walked away from both major label contract opportunities and released your new EPs independently. No doubt it was incredibly tempting to just sign on the dotted line and get on with it. When people are talking about you getting a deal, when you have shows that label reps are at and then a year goes by and you have no news, people start drawing conclusions and rumors start. It’s like agents coming to scout you for the major leagues – everyone wants to know what’s going on. It was a great story,

slanted so heavily towards the label. Sure, it would have felt great to have had that press release and those articles coming out for our egos – to have been able to say ‘we finally made it.’ But to be honest, it would all be bullsh*t, because we would be more broke, more limited and, in my opinion, “sold out” the integrity we had earned the hard way. Working with Mark Needham in LA must have been incredible. Was this the first time you had someone helping to shape your songs?

Yes – to this extent, anyways. Mark never really has stepped in and wanted to change things, which is one of the reasons we chose to work with him. Mark’s role has been to record what we do and make it sound great – hopefully give it an energy sonically that portrays what we do live. He believes in us as much as we believe in ourselves, I think. It’s been bewildering to all of us involved to see some our peers sign deals – bands that have opened for us on the road – while we still haven’t. If Mark, who has a history of signing and working with some of the biggest and critically-acclaimed bands of the last 20 years, pitches us to a label and says he believes that we are as good as any rock band that they have, and some 25-yearold A&R kid who has never heard of The Cult or The Clash passes on us, what can we do? I’d rather know that someone actually knows music places that kind of validation on my art than be signed by someone who will be selling Audis in the valley this time next year. Finally, what’s been the response so far to the new EPs, especially considering they were recorded in different parts of the country? The response has been great. The connection that different people have with different songs is very special to us as well as having both EPs being so different from each other. music when I’m a musician,” she says. “I moved to Nashville and played music, waited tables – got to know myself. So, that’s what the record is – the songs that I wrote between moving and coming back to Evansville.” A firm believer in the idea that “everything happens for a reason,” Reed sees her odyssey as a life education that has ultimately brought her together with Case, Hyneman and Vowels for the purpose of sharing her songs and story with others who might be feeling lost, too. At one show in particular, Reed proudly recalls a sweet moment that involved an Autistic boy. “His mom came over after the set and said that while her son was too shy to approach us, he wanted to make sure the band knew how much he liked them,” she says. “I want to build our music off of those little successes.”

“I don’t ﬁnd many people that write and sing songs that make me want to say, ‘I want to play music with them,’” says Reed Four multi-instrumentalist Josh Case. “Andria’s one of the four or ﬁve I’ve met that made me want to say that.” Guitarist and vocalist Andria Reed wrote her first song nearly two decades ago at the age of 11. A familiar face at area open mic nights for years, the accomplished solo performer temporarily shelved her musical dreams after returning to college in 2010. “I couldn’t be out at the bars till three in the morning and still do well in school,” she says. “But my last year of college I really wanted to form a band, and I knew Josh had always shown interest in playing.” Reed also met another major talent in Joe Vowels, a guitarist and fellow employee at Boston’s Restaurant where she worked while attending school. The two shared a musical bond and, most importantly, a vision for the songs that the soon-to-be elementary teacher had written – emotionally-charged, indie rock melodramas with touches of Bluegrass and blues that confronted life’s struggles head on. In fact, Reed’s assured songwriting has often been born out of uncertainty as documented movingly on Bedford to Bellemeade, the album that she, Case, Vowels and drummer Matt Hyneman recorded last year (the group is patiently waiting for the mastering to be completed). It reflects not just Reed’s personal journey

but also the band’s developing relationship and evolution – especially Hyneman’s. “I’ve been to the deepest, darkest depths of hell with music, and I love it,” he says. “I never thought I’d find myself playing in a band like this.” While the selfconfessed metal head is not technically a drummer, you’d never guess it by listening to the recordings or watching him recreate his inventive rhythmic patterns on stage. For those familiar with the streets of Evansville, it’s no mystery where Reed got the name of the album – at least half of it. The Bedford part of the equation actually refers to an avenue in Nashville where she re-located to after her first attempt at college fell flat. “I wondered why I was spending all this money

Like many original bands in the tri-state, Reed Four has struggled to book shows, but the tide is slowly turning. On October 3, they’ll play at Uptown Events Restaurant followed by an October 24 appearance at the Newburgh Harvest Fest and on the Tri-State Space Program podcast. Still, all the members are in agreement that simply coming together as a band and recording their own songs is proof of success. “We were playing the Farmers Market recently, and a guy came up and gave us a tip,” Vowels says. “He was like, ‘good luck,’ and in my head I thought, ‘that’s a nice gesture, but we’re already doing it!’” Follow Reed Four on Facebook and look out

Boogie Nights Rocks Presents Hair metal’s biggest names are coming to downtown Evansville’s fave nightclub

Platinum-selling rockers LA Guns recently took the stage in front of a big crowd at Boogie Nights and absolutely tore it up. But the late September show was just the beginning of a series of high profile concerts scheduled at the downtown 70’s and 80’s nightclub. Up next: a performance by former Winger frontman CFKip Winger on October 30. Now a successful solo artist, CFKip Winger first hit it big with his namesake band and their selftitled 1988 debut album featuring the songs “Seventeen” and “Headed for a Heartbreak.” The follow-up, 1990’s In the Heart of the Young, was certified platinum on the strength of the breakout single, “Miles Away.” The band has recorded four more albums over the years, including the recent Better days Comin’. As a solo artist, CFKip Winger has put out five releases starting with 1997’s This Conversation Seems Like a dream through to 2010’s classical symphonic piece, Ghosts – Suite No. 1. The Boogie Nights Rocks series continues on November 14 with Cinderella’s Tom Keifer. Best known for megahits like “Nobody’s Fool” and “Don’t Know What You Got (Till It’s Gone),” Cinderella ruled as one of the top hair metal bands of the 80s on into the early 90s with albums like Night Songs, Long Cold Winter and Heartbreak Station. Raised in Kentucky, young adult author Alice Kasey initially caught the writing bug in school, excelling in English class and creating a flood of stories and poetry. She enlisted in the Air Force after high school but continued to work on her craft. One of the stories that came out of this period, “Forgotten Realms,” became the basis for both her first official novel, Faerie Born – the first book in the Azarian Chronicles trilogy – and the upcoming 2017 fantasy series, EverWorld.

Instead, she ends up on a quest to defeat the dark lord Morlin where startling truths are revealed. Iron Maiden: Book of Souls If you’re talking bands that have stood the test of time, you’re talking Iron Maiden. One of the dominant forces during the British metal invasion of the early 1980’s, Maiden has survived 40 years in the rock world and continues to be one of the mightiest bands in the land. Last month, the metal gods looked down, smiled upon their children of rock and offered their 16th studio album. Book of Souls fully displays Maiden’s best quality: having a sound that is instantly recognizable while remaining totally inspired. Maiden is not repetitive. It’s comfortably familiar while remaining powerful, and thought provoking. From the opening of “If Eternity Shall Fail” to the 18 minute “Empire of the Clouds,” this album is a journey through themes of mortality and the eternal nature of the soul. Truthfully, there is no proper way to review a Maiden album in such a short column. It’s too complex, and it rocks too hard. However, one thing is certain. While these hard rockers of the highest magnitude could not be blamed at this point for resting on their laurels, the extraordinary vision and powerful execution presented on Book of Souls clearly indicates that these veterans have plenty left in their tank. On a 5 rock goblet scale, Book of Souls receives 4.5 goblets of rock raised toward the heavens. J. Robert Lobeck

Smile! It’s Autumn! With the weather cooling off, and my favorite time of year getting into full swing, I’ve decided to forgo my usual Andy Rooney-style gripes about society, and attempt to just toss some positive vibes into my little corner of Indiana. Autumn means a lot of things. It means football is back. It means the leaves are changing, and for a short period before the deadness of winter, the world is a beautiful canvas of oranges and yellows. For Evansville, it means the Fall Festival, and all the questionable, yet delicious food we convince ourselves is acceptable to eat because, hey, it’s the Fall Festival. To some, including myself, it’s the early stages of the holiday season, kicking off with Halloween. Some might not include Halloween as part of the holidays, but it does involve giving, gathering, and fond childhood memories for most. For me, more than anything, it’s a time of year to stop being angry and focus on whatever goodness we have in our lives. As we transition from children into adults, a lot of the magic of the world begins to deteriorate. We become aware that the world is a harsh, unforgiving place. We realize that attempting to live life by the basic rights and wrongs our parents taught us is next to impossible, and we have experiences that leave us wondering what happened to the idealized world we were so convinced awaited us upon adulthood. Some of us can shrug it off and move forward. Some folks have a particular belief system they find peace in. Still, some of us become cynical, depressed, and attempt to shut ourselves off from the world. Even for a cynic like me, society has had a really negative tone to it over this past year. Maybe it’s just a byproduct of election season coming around again. Whatever the reason, these few months every year provide the opportunity to drop that negative weight and temporarily create that idealized world for ourselves, our families, or for someone that might not be able to do it for themselves. No more arguing about politics, social issues, religion, etc. Use that chill in the air to turn inward and focus on appreciating your own little world. Then turn around, and send that positivity outward. A thousand candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of that candle will not be shortened. Happy autumn, my friends.

I never would have guessed that a little over a year ago this is where I would be in my life. Time can lag like a sleeping leg, or it can hurtle violently and magnificently, leaving you breathless and wondering “What the hell just happened?” This issue of News4U marks my first year as staff writer/editorial assistant, which is absolutely mindboggling to me. I get paid. To write things. People read them. Whoa. More importantly, hopefully, I have been able to scootch a band along in a better direction, turned you on to new things in film and music, suggested good eats, and planted seeds with my commentary in this random-ass, cathartic column. We’ve discussed social issues, regrets, supporting all things local, news, travel, finding the beauty in a sometimesugly world... and Caitlyn Jenner. Twice. We were just making sure you were paying attention! Jeez. This month I will take it easy on you by just saying thank you to all of the readers, businesses, bands, event planners, music lovers, artists, and of course, all of the staff here at News4U. I’ve met so many incredible characters along the way and witnessed growth within our publication that

makes me too proud to be a part of it all. This has been a hell of a year, a strangely awesome summer, and I couldn’t have survived it without this family that we call a crew and the ability to express myself just as I am. One Book One Community Author Event Orange is the New Black author Piper Kerman to deliver free lecture on November 4

Each year, the One Book One Community committee, which is made up of community members from a wide array of backgrounds, selects a book for the community-wide read in an effort to get people reading and talking about issues addressed between the covers. 2015’s selection is the wildly popular Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Woman’s Prison by Piper Kerman. The book documents the 12 months that the author spent in the Danbury Correctional Facility for a crime she had committed 10 years prior involving drug trafficking. Quite successfully, Kerman’s recounting of her experiences was made into a Netflix TV series, albeit with a number of liberties taken. So, it’s highly recommended that people read the author’s book to get a true sense of her time in prison, the women she met and the almost complete lack of guidance for life after release. On November 4, Kerman will deliver a free lecture at the Victory Theatre as the featured One Book One Community author. The event is intended to be a public discussion of Orange is the New Black as well as her prison advocacy efforts followed by a booksigning. Kerman has previously spoken at the White House and on campuses across the country, including the University of Tulsa, Roanoke College, Fairfield University, Rutgers University, New York Law School and many others. New Belgium Pumpkick

Pumpkin Porter

Daniel Knight • 4 This is a refreshing version of the traditional seasonal pumpkin ales. Its appearance is an orangish-copper with a creamy two finger off-white head. Its aroma is spicy with cinnamon, nutmeg and some pumpkin, too. Nice, actually. The flavor follows suit with an added variable of cranberries and just the right amount of sparkle. I might not have identified the cranberries without reading that they are part of the formulation. They add a touch of tartness that helps prevent a “too sweet” flavor. This is my favorite pumpkin beer ever. Give it a try.

Daniel Knight • 3 I think this is my first ever pumpkin porter. It pours up very dark brown with a one finger head that fades away quickly. The nose is mildly pumpkin pie spices with roasted malts. The flavor doesn’t follow through with the pumpkin pie-like characteristics. It mostly just tastes like a porter. Not all bad - I enjoy a good porter. I pick up on the spices very subtly. Overall, it’s good, not great.

Paul Bragin • 3 A thick off-white head forms on this deep golden beer and never totally evaporates. The scent contains generous amounts of the spices used during the brewing process, as well as the faint scent of cranberries and pumpkin. The taste of lemongrass hits the tongue first, followed by spices. New Belgium recommends using the beer to make pumpkin bread. That might be a wise choice since the beer seems to have too many competing flavors. Jabez Martinez • 4 This is a hazy burnt orange colored beer. I’m a fan of New Belgium and this one is pretty good. I could taste the cinnamon and other spices. It also has an ABV of 6%. I also detected some tart flavors due to the cranberries.

Paul Bragin • 4 A thick tan head tops this dark brown beer. The scent of roasted malt can be detected before even putting the glass to your nose. Spices also come through during the smelling. Spices and pumpkin first hit the tongue when drinking the beer, with roasted malt notes present in the finish. This is definitely better than most pumpkin beers. Porter lovers will want to seek out this seasonal while it’s available. Jabez Martinez • 3.5 This is obviously a dark colored beer since it’s a porter and I could smell some of the spices. Like the bottle states, it’s a pumpkin porter and this one has a somewhat creamy flavor. I could taste the spices but I wish they were a little more profound. I would have rated it higher if it had a little more flavor.

Oskar Blues IPA

Daniel Knight • 3.75 Oskar Blues has a history of making great beers. This one is no exception. It’s packaged in a traditional 12 ounce can. I’m still trying to get accustomed to that. It poured up a light golden color and foamed over. That seemed unusual for an IPA. The aroma is pleasantly hoppy leaning mostly toward grapefruit. The taste has a light mouthfeel with a different, somewhat complex hybrid of hop flavors. I like it. Paul Bragin • 4 A thick white head crowns this clear, golden colored India pale ale. The presence of hops fills the nose as soon as the can opens. After pouring into a beer mug, the hops take on notes of grapefruit and pine. The hop flavors remain while sipping the beer, especially during the long finish. Hopheads will definitely want to try this new IPA. Pair it with spicy cuisines like Cajun, Japanese or Mexican food. Jabez Martinez • 4 This is a light amber colored beer. I could smell the fresh floral hops. I liked the sweet hops flavor and detected some grapefruit flavors - it was pretty smooth. Goose Island Imperial Stout

flavor was sweeter than I expected. The brewer promotes this beer touting its licorice content. It was actually a little disappointing with less bite than I personally prefer. That said, it’s very drinkable and will probably be liked more than most Imperial stouts by those who aren’t acclimated to this style of brew. Paul Bragin • 4.25 A thick tan head forms on top of the black stout when poured into an English pub glass. The nose contains generous amounts of roasted malt, as well as some sweet notes from the licorice used during brewing. The sweet notes remain with the first sip of the beer and the roasted malt flavors return during the finish. Fans of porters and stouts should put this seasonal on their list to try while it’s still available.

Daniel Knight • 3.5 Yea! I’m a big fan of Imperial stouts. This one pours up almost black and produces a one finger light tan head with good retention and lacing. The nose is mostly of dark roasted malts with sweet malts, alcohol and hops lagging far behind. The

Struggling videographer Aaron (writer/director Patrick Brice) stumbles across a Craigslist opportunity to make some quick cash filming a day in the life of Josef (Mark Duplass, The Lazarus Eﬀect), a supposed terminally ill, soon-to-be father. For the bold sum of $1000 and a promise of complete discretion, Aaron is asked to film Josef performing daily activities with commentary in order to leave a memorial piece for his future son, Buddy. Aaron’s genuine optimism quickly turns to apprehension, however. What starts out as a mildly strange yet heartbreaking endeavor spirals into an uncomfortably odd and often-frightening day, beginning with Josef slipping into a candle-lit bath. Unnerved yet fascinated, Aaron is torn between curiosity, fear, and the need for cash. Josef’s intentions become increasingly unclear with every turn of events, and may not wrap up at the end of the day as previously promised. With a startling performance by Duplass (also a co-writer) and fresh ideas both in plot and filming, the fruition of creep is only topped by Brice’s believable acting and incredible directorial debut. Received well by audiences at SXSW and various film festivals, it is appropriately titled and will leave your skin crawling; you’ll also question unbridled trust for much longer than just the duration of the film.

True to form, Director Kenneth Branagh (Frankenstein, Much Ado About Nothing) and writer Chris Weitz (The Golden compass) have taken something cherished, wedged it deeper into our memories, and filled gaps without tainting the original story. Some may miss the cartoon mice, however, as the digital fellows are a bit creepy, but Ella (the snarky nickname is brought to light) is a genuine leading lady and fulfills her duties as a ray of sunshine in a murky existence. And if you feared Lady Tremaine in the animated version, mind your manners for Cate Blanchette, whose gorgeous snarl tears right through the screen. In keeping with remakes like Maleﬁcent, however, there’s always a glimmer of humanity in the villain, brought forth in this film in the relationship between a loving stepchild (Lily James) and her widowed, jaded stepmother. Enter Prince (Richard Madden), who is just that, no labels, and the romance unfolds, and Helena Bonham Carter is never one to disappoint, with her fun and fresh performance as Fairy Godmother. A visual masterpiece - as cliche as that sounds cinderella is an upgrade, and that’s coming from someone who can quote and act out the entire animated version from beginning to happily ever after. - Whitney Patterson

For roughly ten years, Beach House has been one of the biggest names in the indie-pop scene. Their four previous albums are just fine, but as time goes on, they seem to only be “just fine.” The same can be said about depression Cherry. This new album is good, but Beach House hasn’t done anything to really evolve their sound. They might be one of the biggest forces in the genre, but the genre is dying and Beach House provide nothing new on depression Cherry.

Using the word “local” to describe artist Josh Gard, a.k.a. FIGURE, just tastes lame. His music is known all over the world, playing to insanely huge, packed arenas and festivals. True, he’s no podunk DJ, yet he remains grounded enough to play often-unexpected free shows at local venues like PG, and most scene locals just know him as Josh. The multi-genre performer describes his music simply: “bass-heavy.” Weaving and killing all things electronic, Gard proves that it’s alive in a way that is almost ironic, because his tracks sample horror film soundclips and lurk in a darkness that’s all his own.

Despite the lingering horror factor, Gravity is an obvious departure from his famous Monster series, and proves that Gard is fully capable of flowing into different directions without losing his proper sound. Check your pulse if you’re not nodding to the theatrical buildup of the intro “One Million Tons of Starship” and hooked by “Destiny Awaits,” a track that already has almost 200,000 plays on SoundCloud. Equally impressive, the gritty “Check My Movements” features EDM drummer KJ Sawka and forceful spit by rapper Adeem. No more spoilers, though. Check out his Facebook for tour dates, and pay extra special attention for surprise local shows to experience the full aesthetic.

Sun Coming down Constellation

Canadian art-rockers Ought follow up their excellent debut album (last year’s More Than Any Other day) with the almost equally excellent Sun Coming down. The band revitalizes sounds from the post-punk of the late 70s through the shoegaze of the early 90s to create something new. The album is dominated by fast guitars drenched in distortion while frontman Tim Darcy screams like David Byrne. Most bands have to pick between sounding fun or sounding cool; Ought manage to do both.

Youth Lagoon Savage Hills Ballroom Fat Possum

On Youth Lagoon’s third album, Savage Hills Ballroom, Trevor Powers takes a huge leap forward in sound. YL’s first two releases found the Idaho-based musician making pop music for loners that spend too much time in their bedroom. His voice sounded distant, drowned in reverb, sad. On Savage Hills Ballroom, Powers does a complete 180. He’s made a great sounding, straight-forward pop album in which he reaches out a hand to old fans and tries to pull them into this new, brighter and shinier world. - Russell Finn

Heartless Bastards Restless Ones Partisan Records Bastards’ fifth album, Restless Ones, leaves next to nothing to complain about. With help from The Black Keys back in 2004, their steady trek to mid-level fame has been welldeserved, and although they’re not a name on everyone’s lips, their level of popularity seems to suit them just fine. It’s feel-good rock-and-roll, with decipherable influences, but definitely not carbon-copy. That would be nearly impossible with Erika Wennerstrom’s unrivaled androgynous vocal stylings alone. Restless Ones cascades into the rambling trip of “Wind-Up Bird,” a fuzzy tune with a pinch of Zeppelin but mostly proof that despite revolving band members, HB hasn’t lost their sound. Further proof is “Gates of Dawn,” a cleaner jam that’s a perfect display of Wennerstrom’s vocal capabilities, harnessing a bit of an Eastern flare accompanied by similarly groovy lyrics. “Black Cloud” is bass-y and toe-tappy, optimistic yet something Strokes fans would enjoy. Alt-country twang sneaks in on the sunny hip-shaker “Hi-Line” and things get folksy on the wistful crooner “Pocketful of Thirst,” with lyrics like “disguised myself as someone else so you could not break me/ letting the walls come down/ so I can be found.” It’s rare to not want to skip at least one track, but that is not an issue here. Both surprising and comforting, I don’t see HB selling out or going anywhere.

Sexy, etc. Sex Tapes Tiny Tapes A surprising deviation from the typical local cover band scene, the trio comprised of Brent Sigler (vocals/bass), Zach Zint (piano/keyboard), and Jeremy Graham (drums/percussion) has released a small compilation of original music which takes that identifier to heart. The talent expressed by each component of Sexy, etc. melds into something natural and a complete departure from any of their individual side projects, which is a feat in itself. It was wall-to-wall at their farewell show at the end of August, and while Sigler has recently embarked on a new adventure outside of Evansville, we’re sure this won’t be the last we hear from this groovy trio; we’re left with this bit of nostalgia in more ways than one, nonetheless. Short and sweet, “I Like it When You Talk” is the first track on Sex Tapes, a jovial, jazzy bit that’s a little grizzly Vince Guaraldi leading into the funkier “Foreplay.” Sigler’s distorted vocals roll out slick lyrics about broken hookup culture, with lines like “She’s got her motives/ I hope you know what they are/ She’s got her shoes picked out so you can pick her up at the bar/ Her credit is limited and so is her self-esteem.” Baby-making bass lines dominate “Bacharach,” and it’s a little Lou Reed, but the organ on “Streets of Dallas” is king, with concise lyrics thrown out with a shrug. “You’re a Good Man” rounds it out, a sort of eulogy to former guilt expressed on the album. Lana Del Rey Honeymoon Interscope If we doubted for one second that Lana Del Rey could release an album more melancholy and impressive than the last, we were being incredibly naive. The gorgeous 30-year old with all of the layers, talent, and pottymouth has achieved Bohemian queen-dom, wrapping America around her tattooed ring finger and becoming the most-streamed female Spotify artist in the U.S. On her fourth studio album, Honeymoon, Del Ray lays any doubt of her capabilities to rest. In 14 tracks and a little over an hour, this album incorporates sounds and feels that should never belong together in the natural world, yet feel like the most organic compositions that couldn’t possibly survive alone. It’s pure black silk, love’s funeral... a veiled embrace that will leave you feeling utterly bewildered and ultimately satisfied. The titular track opens up with all of LDR’s cinematic glory, old Hollywood magic with strings and layered harmonies, but barely does justice to what follows. “Music to Watch Boys To” is, without trying to be crass, like a soundtrack to a wet dream, and her voice could melt steel into honey on “Terrence Loves You.” Nancy Sinatra gospel snakes into the theatrical “God Knows I’ve Tried,” a goosebump-inducing confessional tune. The explicit “High by the Beach” is appropriately seductive and rhythm-heavy trip-hop...
