EDITOR A QUICK NOTE FROM THE

H

ere we are in the heart of summer - right smack dab in the middle of it. In fact, beads of sweat are rolling down my face... Wait a second, these aren't beads of sweat, they're tears. You see, I've just been informed that our longtime Editorial Intern, Russell Finn, has decided that Evansville just isn't cool enough for him. He's off to Nashville to become the next Scotty McCreery or something - I wasn't really paying attention. I kid, I kid. Really, we wish Russ the best of luck as he starts a new life in the Music City and say thanks for all the album reviews, etc. over the last couple of years (or however long it's been). I'll never understand his constant championing of Kanye West, but hey, that's life. Moving on... Our cover story proves that this city is very cool, indeed. The Eville Shindig is on the horizon and we've got the goods on this highly-anticipated car show on Franklin Street. Plus, some of the biggest names in music are headed this way, including Def Leppard, Dolly Parton, David Crosby and John Fogerty - not to mention the world's best "bagrock" band, the Red Hot Chilli Pipers. We've also got a special interview with country star Terri Clark, the latest from Western KY and much more. It's almost enough to make me cry. Here we go again...TE

A Beatersville for Franklin Street: Inaugural traditional car, truck and motorcycle show modeled after Louisville's long-running event EVENT BACKGROUND Eville Shindig creator/organizer Bob McCarty has always loved cars - a common bond that he shares with hard working people all over the world. Over the years, his tastes have admittedly changed a bit with the focus shifting to more traditional models - especially 1968 and older rods and customs that have been the cornerstone of the tri-state's most popular car show for a decade now: Beatersville. McCarty has watched Louisville's signature event evolve into a massive gathering of like-minded enthusiasts, eager to introduce a similar vibe to his home base. "My area of the world needed a car show like this to bring that culture to southern Indiana," he says. "After falling in love with the traditional customs, gassers, rat rods, hot rods, rockabilly music, motorcycles and all the great people associated with Beatersville and other great events, I made up my mind to create Eville Shindig." Described by McCarty as a "fun, laid back day with cars, bands, pin ups and more," Eville Shindig has found the perfect backdrop in West Franklin Street, a historic area of the city lined with 100-year-old buildings re-purposed into bars, restaurants and businesses - nostalgia seeps from the walls. It all makes for the ideal environment to stage an inaugural traditional car, truck and motorcycle show that McCarty guarantees will grow to become one of the best

y l l o D DOLLY PARTON • FORD CENTER • AUGUST 10

Larger-than-life country icon keeping things pure and simple with back to basics North American tour

T

here's only one Dolly. For 50 years, the big-haired star from rural Tennessee has proven she can do just about anything - from writing and performing some of the biggest hits of all time to authoring books, acting in Hollywood blockbusters and running her popular Dollywood theme park. But she's also just a wonderful person, a true humanitarian beloved by people of all ages from all backgrounds; the connection that she shares with her millions of fans worldwide is unlike any other artist.

Well, we kind of do a little something for everybody. I try to be as entertaining as I can be. Of course, we do all the hits that people expect me to do - "9 to 5," "I Will Always Love You," "Two Doors Down," "Here You Come Again," "Jolene" - all those songs we do. And then of course I do my family segment where I talk about family and do a lot of the songs from back home and reminisce about who I am and how I got to be that way. I also do some gospel stuff, and I try to be funny (laughs).

With a new album, Pure & Simple, out in late August, Parton has taken to the road for a lengthy North American tour - her first in many years. Like the new release, the stage show strips everything back to the core sound she began with five decades ago: just a few musicians sitting around playing together for the sheer joy of it all, free of all the technological bells and whistles.

Is there much difference from what we see and hear of Dolly Parton the person and what we see and hear of Dolly Parton the artist? No, I think I'm pretty much the same. I'm the same behind the scenes as I am on stage. I just try to wear my heart on my sleeve and just say what's in my heart and what's on my mind. People have gotten to know me over the last 50 years like that. I don't think I have too many secrets or people would know them by now. I may work harder at some things than others, but my personality is the same.

News4U was recently invited to participate in a virtual press conference with Dolly holding court, taking questions from the likes of Entertainment Weekly, the Chicago Tribune and other major publications. Here's a sampling of the Q & A. Can you describe this new show for us and what we can look forward to once you get out there on that stage?

8|

August 2016 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

What's next after this big tour is over - have you thought that far ahead? Yes. After this big, full-blown tour, I want to get more involved in television and more film production. And, of course, I'll continue being involved with Dollywood and my other business ventures. cont. on page 10

NEWS4U | UPCOMING EVENTS [Musician] Jack White obviously loves you. Is there anything that you think might happen between the two of you - some type of collaboration? I love him to death, and I think the White Stripes did one of the greatest versions ever of "Jolene." I actually had a chance to have dinner with Jack in LA not long ago, and we talked about the possibility that some day down the road we might get together and do something. I think his work is wonderful - I just haven 't had the time to sit down and really focus that much on working with someone else on an album. But I think the two of us could make some beautiful music together. A couple of years ago, the former governor of Illinois, Pat Quinn, declared it Dolly Parton Day in Illinois. Do you have a vision of what a perfect Dolly Parton Day would look like? (Laughs) No, but I'm just so honored that there should be such a thing. I just hope that I can live up that kind of a compliment. That's a beautiful state with beautiful people, so I'm just honored to have been lifted up to that level. When you sit down to write a song, do you have a guitar in your hands, do you sit at the piano? Can you give a little insight into your writing process? Actually, I play quite a few instruments - mountain instruments like banjo, autoharp and dulcimer. So, a lot of times it depends on what I'm writing. I use the guitar mostly, but if I really want to get into some really old-timey sounds I'll get out some of my country instruments like that and write with them. I do write some at the piano, because sometimes it lets my mind go freer than just picking and playing. So, I write with different instruments - and sometimes I write with no instruments. What message do you want your fans to get from the new material that you're debuting? On the new Pure & Simple album, the songs are all love songs, because I celebrated 50 years of marriage to my husband Carl Dean this past year, so I thought it would be a good time do an album of love songs. But the songs are also pure and pretty simple in nature - a lot of them sound like the old records I used to record long ago that some of my true fans I think will really appreciate. Country music is normally a genre that appeals to a very specific audience, but your fan base is really interesting. You're universally beloved by men and women, straight and gay and everything in between. What do you think it is about you and your music that attracts such a universal group of people from all different backgrounds? I don't really know for sure - I'm just happy that it is. But I think people do relate to me, because as I've often said, people don't come to see me, they come to see me be them. I think I've been at this so long that a lot of people just kind of grew up with me. I feel more like a family member or an aunt or older sister or friend. And people know that I'm kind of different myself - I've fought to be allowed to be myself. That's one of the reasons that gays and lesbians relate to me - they know that I appreciate everybody for who they are. I ain't out to preach no sermons. I'm just out to do my work, write my songs and love everybody.

NEWS4U | SPECIAL FEATURE

Country music's "Northern Girl" discusses life after radio hits, that cowboy hat and much more

TERRI CLARK C

anadian country singer Terri Clark burst onto the scene in the mid '90s with a run of hugely successful singles, including "Poor Poor Pitiful Me," "If I were You," "Emotional Girl," "You're Easy on the Eyes" and "Girls Lie Too" - all number one hits. Even more impressive, she wrote or co-wrote the majority of them. In fact, she continues to write to this day - a rarity in Nashville, especially for women. In addition to making her mark on the charts, Clark has drawn plenty of attention for her good looks and everpresent cowboy hat, a fixture in the many playful videos she has made over the years. And though, predictably, a new crop of young singers now gets the lion's share of press and radio time, she still loves to tour and record new material. Clark's most recent original albums, 2011's Roots & Wings and 2014's Some Songs, contained more than a handful of great tracks, particularly the former's autobiographical "Northern Girl," a guaranteed smash were it not for the politics of the industry. In truth, Clark's iconic voice still fills the airwaves every week - just not quite in the way her fans are used to. She recently replaced Randy Owen as the host of the Saturday night classic country program, Country Gold, reaching millions of listeners every week. You came to Nashville at a very young age. What did you think when you arrived? The first time I came to Nashville, my dad actually drove me down from Canada - I think when I was only 18. We just did a weekend trip - stayed at the Days Inn off of Trinity Lane (laughs). I remember looking out the window at the skyline and thinking, 'Oh my god.' You know, I was from Medicine Hat, Alberta and not from a big city. I thought Nashville seemed like quite a city to have to conquer by myself. When I moved there, I was told that the chances of someone giving me a record deal were like one percent. And I thought, 'Thanks for the encouragement, everybody - this is just fantastic (laughs)!' And then the chances of having a hit were even less than that. And then the chances of having a career after the hit were even less than that. They were just full of good news when I arrived (laughs). I'm not an overly-religious person, but I prayed every night before I went to sleep when I was teenager that God would give me the strength to not give up. And I still haven't given up. I mean, my days of having radio hits are probably over - even in Canada at this point - but I don't give up. I've started doing a radio show that I love, I tour my butt off - I go and play for as many people as I can. I'm so lucky that I still have an audience that shows up to watch me play and what else could you hope for? How has being a writer impacted your career in the long-term? I actually got a publishing deal before I got a record deal. But I think they signed me as a writer obviously with the fact that I was going to be an artist in their crosshairs - it was sort of a combo deal. Most of the songs that I wrote I recorded. In fact, I'm going to write today. I'm still writing with people in Nashville. At this point, though, if I record it or put it on an EP or release it to iTunes that's great, but I'm just as happy if someone else wants to record something I've written. It's a whole other facet of a music career that you can go back to. As a songwriter you don't have to be a size six or have to be 23 years old. If you write a great song, one of

NEWS4U | SPECIAL FEATURE those people can cut it. That's a wonderful possibility for people like me who still tour but aren't part of the current scene. Coming up in the fall, I'm doing a whole solo unplugged tour through Canada - 40 shows by myself. That's where the storytelling comes in - how the songs came together. I think people enjoy hearing how a song's born. Do you truly feel that even if you released the best song of your career right now it wouldn't get played on the radio? Absolutely. It takes a lot of money and it takes a lot of attention, a lot of focus. There's so much competition out there. And let's face it, women are having a really hard time getting airplay. Martina McBride just put out one of the best songs I've ever heard her record - "Reckless" - and it's not flying up the charts like it should, either. If she had put that song out five or six years ago, there would be no question. There's just a whole different regime in place, like a changing of the guard that's happened. I just think it's a timing thing and there's a point at which the natural course of things takes over. Not everybody can be Kenny Chesney or Tim McGraw - in fact, nobody can. You've got George Strait, Kenny and Tim - I'm hard-pressed to find a fourth person. There's no women in that category - Reba's the closest. Reba and Martina have had really long careers, but there's almost no one else in the history of country music that has had longer than a 10-15 year run at it on radio. When radio has moved on to something else, it's hard to get it back. Is it easier to live a normal life these days - and do you leave the hat at home when you go out? It was just so hard to have any kind of normal life for a good 10 years there. It was tough on relationships when I was in one. And now, I can go to Kroger (laughs). As far as the hat goes, it's always so much easier for me to get around without it. I totally just blend in with everybody and that's a good thing. I actually went to the Kentucky Derby last year and just wore a fancy hat like all the other women, and I had like 12 or 13 people come up and say, 'Hey, where's your cowboy hat?' But I got around the whole place with no problem. I put the cowboy hat on this year and it was a whole different scene (laughs). It's amazing the difference that thing makes for me. RED HOT CHILLI PIPERS VICTORY THEATRE AUGUST 11

Bagrock till you drop: 9-piece Scottish ensemble has a passion for pipes, re-imagines classic and contemporary hits

F

irst off, let's clear up any possible confusion. There's a major difference between the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Red Hot Chilli Pipers. The former is a group of California surfer-types known for such funky favorites as "Give It Away" while the latter is a collective of bagpipe enthusiasts formed in Scotland nearly 15 years ago, known for merging the sounds of their homeland with the bombastic rock and melodic pop of the likes of Queen and Coldplay. Yes, the names are quite similar - but that's not the point, really. The nod to the OG RHCP just serves as a way to describe what the Chilli Pipers do, in essence. Just don't come to the show in August expecting to hear Flea's signature slap-bass and Anthony Keidis' singular rap-sing delivery. Regardless, you won't be disappointed, that's for sure. With the formalities out of the way, a little background on the Chilli Pipers is in order. As noted, the band formed in Scotland many years ago with the unique intent to combine two disparate worlds of music and produce what has come to be affectionately termed "bagrock." Things really took off in 2007 by way of winning a popular British talent show competition on the BBC, When Will I Be Famous? - a victory that catapulted the Chilli Pipers into the mainstream. In the years immediately following, the band toured the world and produced several well-received albums, including 2010's runaway success, Music for the Kilted Generation, which featured rousing bagrock renditions of Queen's "Radio GaGa," War's "Low Rider," AC/

DC's "Long Way to the Top" and The Who's "Baba O'Riley" as well as C+C Music Factory's dance floor anthem, "Everybody Dance Now." To top it all off, the group was voted the Scottish Live Act of the Year, a well-deserved award. No doubt that while the records the Chilli Pipers have released - the latest, Octane, dropped June 13 - certainly do justice to the band's unique sound, there's simply no substitute for the live bagrock experience. It's a truly visceral and incredibly powerful stage presentation - for proof, YouTube their version of Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water" (which segues masterfully into AC/DC's "Thunderstruck") and you'll get a pretty good idea of just how loud and rocking bagpipe music can be, especially when backed by guitar, bass and drums. To recap: when you buy a ticket to this show, you will not be seeing the Red Hot Chili Peppers; however, you WILL be introduced to a style of music that is quite unlike anything you have heard before and chances are, you'll quickly forget all about those California kids and be totally tuned into Scotland's pride and joy. Don't miss out! The show starts at 7 p.m. For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre.com. The Victory is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville.

He began as a folksinger, playing clubs and coffeehouses nationwide. In 1963, Crosby formed The Byrds with Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman, Gene Clark and Michael Clarke, producing hits including "Eight Miles High," "Turn! Turn! ll summer long, the Lincoln Amphitheatre has been bringing in some of the nation's biggest bands and tribute acts, covering a wide range of musical territory from classic rock to country, psychedelia to alternative rock. It's all been part of the reimagining of this amazing venue which previously staged productions primarily to educate the public about our 16th president. And while the Abraham Lincoln plays continue to be a big draw, the entertainment focus of the amphitheatre has expanded with the 2016 Performance Series. Following on the heels of the Dirty Deeds AC/DC Tribute in July, the Lincoln Amphitheatre welcomes the Marshall Tucker Band to the stage on August 12. The Southern rock legends formed in South Carolina in the early 70s, establishing an instantly identifiable sound on their self-titled debut and subsequent albums releases - a gritty and bluesy sound with elements of country that laid the foundation for Southern rock. Bands from 38 Special to the Black Crowes were heavily influenced by classic MTB tracks like "Can't You See," "Take the Highway," "This "Ol' Cowboy" and "Heard It in a Love Song." Upcoming shows at the Lincoln Amphitheatre include a very special performance by the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra (9/3), rocker Eddie Money (9/10), the Cool City Band (9/24) and Pink Droyd: The North American Theatrical Pink Floyd Concert (10/1). Crosby left The Byrds in 1967 to embark on a lifelong collaboration with Graham Nash and Stephen Stills. Renowned for vocal harmonies, stellar musicianship and timeless songs, Crosby, Stills, & Nash (CSN) have been called "the voice of a generation," and were GRAMMY-honored in 1969 as Best New Artist. The trio's self-titled debut introduced classics including the Crosbypenned tracks "Guinnevere" and "Wooden Ships" - today, it is included on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. As a solo artist, Crosby debuted with the 1971 masterpiece If Only I Could Remember My Name, recently reissued as a two-disc set. He also performs and records with CPR, the jazz-flavored trio he formed in 1995 and continues to tour and record with CSN, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and as a duo with Graham Nash. JOHN FOGERTY Rollin' on the River FORD CENTER • AUGUST 27

From CCR to Centerfield and beyond: 50 year musical journey to play out on stages across America John Fogerty is a true American treasure, one of popular music’s all-time greatest singers, guitar players, and songwriters. His remarkable career began in his hometown of El Cerrito, California, soon earning massive popular and critical success with the one and only Creedence Clearwater Revival which formed nearly 50 years ago. As leader of CCR, Fogerty forged a distinctive, groundbreaking sound all his own, equal parts blues, country, pop, rockabilly, R&B, swamp boogie, and Southern fried rock ‘n’ roll, all united by his uniquely evocative lyrical perspective. After CCR called it quits in 1972, Fogerty embarked on what would prove to be an equally impressive solo career. Among its many highlights are 1975’s John Fogerty - featuring the rollicking "Rockin’ All Over The World" - and 1985’s #1 phenomenon, Centerfield. With its trio of timeless hit singles, including "The Old Man Down The Road," "Rock And Roll Girls," and the irresistible title track, the multi-platinum collection marked Fogerty’s glorious return to the forefront of modern rock ‘n’ roll. 1997’s Blue Moon Swamp earned Fogerty further acclamation, as well as a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. Among his many other honors are induction in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the BMI Pop Music Awards’ prestigious BMI Icon, and Performance Magazine’s Theater Tour of the Year Award. In addition, Fogerty and "Centerfield" were honored during the 2010 National Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies - the first time the National Baseball Hall of Fame has immortalized a musician or song as part of the annual ceremonies. In 2013, Fogerty released Wrote a Song for Everyone, a testament to the fact that the songs he has written over the past five decades continue to speak in a powerful way to generations of music makers and music lovers. Now Fogerty's taking his incredible catalog of songs on the road to fans all across America and up into Canada, proving that his body of work is timeless and more appreciated than ever. Don't miss this rare opportunity to see one of the greatest songwriters and performers of all time! The show starts at 7 p.m. For tickets, visit thefordcenter.com or call 812-422-1515.

Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra 2016-2017 Season

An American Celebration: Maestro Savia and the orchestra are seeing red, white and blue beginning September 24 For those lucky enough to have reserved a seat, the EPO's 2015-2016 season grand finale in May was the very definition of "experiencing the Phil." The live orchestral accompaniment to the legendary 1972 film, The Godfather, filled the Victory Theatre with the beauty and sadness of Italian composer Nina Rota's masterful score. It was a truly powerful end to an incredibly diverse series of performances that brought out the stars every single month - from world-renowned violinist (and Indian's own) Joshua Bell to country music recording artist Rachel Potter. Pop concert highlights included the latter plus singer Terry Mike Jeffrey resurrecting the spirit of Elvis and guest pianist Joe Boucher paying homage to Elton John and Billy Joel. On the Classics side of things, Croatian classical guitar virtuoso Ana Vidovic returned by popular demand and pianist Antonio Pompa-Baldi joined the EPO for a rare performance of Respighi's Piano Concerto in A Minor - just a couple examples of the brilliance on display last season. And now we're just a little over a month away from the start of a whole new round of performances from the EPO. The new season's theme is "An American Celebration," a musical tribute to the red, white and blue, which kicks off on September 24 at the Victory. Featuring Zuill Bailey, Toyota's Opening Night - appropriately titled American Tales - will see the supremely gifted cellist performing John Harbison's Remembering Gatsby

Foxtrot for Orchestra, Michael Daugherty's Tales of Hemingway Concerto for Cello & Orchestra and Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, "From the New World." The Pops Series gets going on October 29 with a spooky, one night only performance featuring the Evansville Philharmonic Chorus. Come in costume for the EPO's frighteningly good Halloween Bash that will include a variety of orchestral works: Night on Bald Mountain and Bach's Toccata & Fugue in D Minor plus themes from Psycho, Ghostbusters, Nightmare Before Christmas and Phantom of the Opera. While this concert may not suitable for young children, it's perfect for everyone who loves to feel a chill up the spine, especially in late October. Other highlights of the upcoming 2016-2017 season include Leonard Bernstein's Mass featuring celebrant/baritone Jubilant Sykes, the annual Peppermint Pops concert, the return of Project Trio and another amazing grand finale as the orchestra provides live accompaniment to Raiders of the Lost Ark in recognition of the beloved film's 35th anniversary. VHS CARDIO FOR CANINES New pilot program at the Vanderburgh Humane Society is a walk (or run) in the park

P

eople in the Evansville area can now get their morning exercise by walking or running with a homeless shelter dog from the Vanderburgh Humane Society through the brand-new Cardio for Canines program! Participants will come to the rear entrance of the VHS (the Intake/ Surrenders lobby) on Saturday mornings at 8 a.m. They will fill out a short release and a staff member or volunteer will select for them a dog of the appropriate energy level and temperament. Starting at 8:30 a.m., participants will leave the shelter in waves for a walk/run through Garvin Park! Sessions will end no later than 9:30 a.m. This pilot program, still in its infancy, is designed to benefit both human and canine. Evansville has been criticized far too often for being an “obese” city with many programs and organizations devoted to helping people in the area stay healthy. Cardio for Canines is a great way to get active while helping a homeless dog at the same time. VHS shelter dogs spend about 22-23 hours a day in a kennel. They can mentally and psychologically deteriorate from a lack of exercise and human interaction. Programs like this help the dogs get much-needed exercise, socialization, and good ol’ fashioned fresh air and sunshine. The first session was held on June 25 with great success just from social media and word of mouth promotion. Every single available dog in the building got to go out on a walk/run. VHS hopes to have regular participants and to see new faces throughout the coming months as well. The program will happen weekly every Saturday (excluding holidays) for at least the remainder of the summer. For more info, visit the Cardio for Canines Facebook page. The VHS is located at 400 Millner Industrial Dr. in Evansville.

WHS DOGS & SUDS ANGEL MOUNDS • AUGUST 27

Paws-itively wonderful: Warrick Humane Society's annual fundraiser keeps right on growing 13 years on from the inaugural Dogs & Suds event back in 2003, you'd hardly recognize it. And that's a very good thing. The Warrick Humane Society has steadily grown this annual fundraiser to include more activities and entertainment and in doing so, the organization has been rewarded with increased community support - i.e., more dollars to help the animals. With an absolutely jam-packed event schedule lined up for the 2016 edition, Dogs & Suds is primed for its biggest year yet! As always, 21 and over attendees can look forward to the traditional beer garden (half of the "suds" equation) and everyone can enjoy all manner of delicious food available. For the kids, there's a designated area where they can hang out together as well as a special kids race for those youngsters that feel the need for speed. Of course, Dogs & Suds wouldn't be the same without pet games and pet contests. Contest categories this year include Best Costume, Owner LookA-Like, Oldest, Smallest, Largest, Best Trick, Best Voice, Best Smooch, Most Glamorous and Facebook Favorite. Bring your furry friend along to compete for these coveted awards! You can even give your buddy a bath (the other half of the "suds" equation) if need be. One of the biggest draws will surely be the 5K or 10K run/walk - with or without your dog. Jogging through scenic Angel Mounds is the perfect way to spend a summer evening, especially in the name of charity. And speaking of charity, you can also donate to the WHS by participating in the event's silent auction. Last but not least, Dogs & Suds will also feature some great live music from local favorites Dave Weddle, Iron Monkee and Nocturnal. Come out and support the WHS and all the good work they do! The event runs from 4pm - 9pm. For more info, visit dogsandsuds.org. Angel Mounds is located at 8215 Pollack Ave. in Evansville.

CONFESSIONS OF AN

INTERN

W

IU journalism major discovers that working for free has its perks and its pitfalls - and it's more than just making coffee

hen I was home for winter break this past year I was dealing with a large bout of conflicting emotions, as most college students are at that point in time. On one hand I was relieved to have a break from school, but on the other hand I had an overwhelming sense of anxiety. That anxiety came from wanting to know my grades on final exams and find a summer internship. Now, finding a communications or public relations internship in Evansville is not the easiest thing to do and what made it even more difficult is that I didn’t have a ton of experience in the field. Anyone who knows me knows that I have dreams of moving to New York City one day and working in the PR industry. But after just a few hours of looking at Manhattan apartments online, I found myself wallowing in selfpity, wondering how in the world I'm ever going to get there. I then opened a new tab and started looking for public relations agencies in town. I stumbled upon a website for a business that was easy to navigate which was something my brain was thankful for at 11 p.m. the night before Christmas Eve. There wasn’t any info about internships but there was a contact section. I figured I didn’t have anything to lose so why not fill it out? After a couple hours of scouring the web, I decided there wasn’t much else I could do and decided to put the looming internship dread to the back of my mind and try and enjoy my Christmas break. The next day I was checking my email and much to my surprise, I discovered that someone had actually messaged me back from Social Life Marketing. Turns out the owner liked my spontaneity and offered me an internship on the spot. I didn’t even give it a second thought before I accepted the offer.

though. All I wanted was to be around like-minded people and just to learn from them. My first day at Social Life Marketing was slightly overwhelming, now that I think about it. I remember being consumed with fear that I would say something dumb or just not be good enough in general. I made quite a few "rookie mistakes" during my first day and I thought that I would share some of them as well as some pieces of advice for any other first-time interns out there. • • • • • •

Don’t wear heels on your first day (unless otherwise noted). BE PREPARED and ask beforehand if there is anything you need to bring with you. Use what you learned in school as your foundation, but remember that school is much different than real life. Make sure electronics are charged and/or you have extra batteries before you go to meet a client. Know how to make a cup of coffee:) Always and I mean ALWAYS have a backup plan for when things go wrong (they will).

Once I corrected all of my rookie mistakes, I started to find my own rhythm. I was given a wide range of tasks, including taking photos for a client, coming up with Facebook page suggestions, running countless errands all over Evansville and my personal favorite, directing a video shoot. Over time, I began to realize that a lot of what I was doing was spontaneous learning. Sure, After months of waiting and pondering, I didn’t really know what to expect I had the basic journalism knowledge that my beloved Indiana University coming into my first day. I had never interned before and the only job I has taught me, but for the most part I had to figure out things on my own. I ever had was at a daycare which I knew wouldn’t help me much. My only got to stand on my own two feet and think for myself for once - no textbook expectations for it were pretty with written steps or a professor stereotypical. I thought that I would nearby to answer questions. I "Over time, I began to realize be making coffee every day and think it turned out pretty well, if that a lot of what I was doing was that I’d be given mundane tasks you ask me. - Caitlin Blackford spontaneous learning." that anyone could do. I didn’t care

Girls' Night Outback: Australia's hottest export bringing famed Las Vegas Strip show to Evansville V I C TO R Y T H E AT R E

AUGUST 19

W

hen the internationally acclaimed male revue Thunder From Down Under hits the Victory stage on August 19, things are going to get steamy. These Aussie hunks will be showing off chiseled bodies, seductive dance routines, cheeky humor and boy-next-door charm that you won't be able to resist! Each sexy performer embodies a different female fantasy and brings it to life, turning your wildest dreams into reality. This isn't the type of show you just sit and watch - Thunder is a fully interactive experience. Don't miss your chance to get up close and personal! Critics, celebrities and fans from around the world rave that Thunder From Down Under is the best male revue show on the Las Vegas Strip where it has appeared for the past 15 years, providing “eye candy” for women of all ages. Additionally, Thunder has performed in more than a dozen foreign countries and appeared on numerous national television shows including The View, Ellen, Project Runway, NBC's Today Show and three times on Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva. Thunder host Dave Hughes and new guy Alex Martenes kindly spoke with News4U about the revue, why they love America so much and more. When did you first get involved with Thunder? DH: I've been in and out of the show for the last 16 years. It was so big in Australia - just a bunch of mates traveling around the world and having fun, living the good life, staying in shape. And America is always the place where all Australians want to go - that's what got me interested. Speaking of staying in shape, how much time and effort goes into keeping all the guys in peak physical condition?

28 |

August 2016 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

A lot of time. The guys start before breakfast with an hour of cardio and then weights during the day unless it's a travel day. But really, the main thing that the company is looking for is good guys with minimal ego - that seems to work with us. We don't want a bloke who's looking at himself in the mirror every five minutes. Australian men have always been a big hit in America - right now the Hemsworth brothers are attracting a lot of attention. What makes Aussie men so appealing to women here in the States? DH: It's because Aussie blokes are really... I think they think that we don't know what's going on (laughs). No, for some reason our accent and everything just works over here. We love it - the warm reception is incredible everywhere we go. But Australia is like a mini America, anyway - we're like your little brother. We've really only been coming over here the last 20 years - we're still new to it, really. The guys in the show all play a character at different points - act out a female fantasy. DH: Whatever is popular at the time, we put on the stage. Right now, firemen are obviously very popular and of course, a SWAT routine, special forces, GI - or whatever's hot in the movies at the time. But the show's different every night - that's why we get a lot of repeat business. Girls will come to see us again and again. Thunder has been a huge success in Vegas, of course. Do you find that the reaction is even crazier when you come to cities like Evansville - places where a show like this doesn't happen every day? DH: Definitely. We love it because the women really get behind us and have a great night with us. Most of the time, they've either seen us in Vegas before or

heard about us, so everyone comes out. Americans love to have fun, especially in the smaller towns - they love to have a drink and let loose. For those of us who will never experience the sensation of making a room full of women go crazy, please describe it. AM: Oh, mate, it's indescribable, to be honest. I mean, you're a grown man putting a G-string on in front of a bunch of ladies (laughs). Finding your comfort on stage takes time, finding your groove and adapting to the madness. I can still remember the first time I went out on stage, and it was a crowd of about a thousand women. At that moment, you're really vulnerable but at the same time, you've got an adrenaline rush - you're absolutely pumped and you feed off the energy that they give you. And the more you put into it, the more they give back. I try to compare the experience to something, and I just can't. That's why I love doing this job. And the American girls give us the best vibe of anywhere in the world. I mean, we go to 16 countries - we've already been to seven this year - and the American girls give us such incredible energy, and we really try to give our all for them. We've got acrobatics and choreography - it's a full-blown Las Vegas stage production. What sort of extreme reactions do you get from the ladies? AM: Oh, man, we've had ladies pass out, girls crawling over the top of other girls to grab at us. But what's really amazing is that we've got three generations of women out there. We've got grandmas, moms and daughters - and everyone's just having a blast together. I mean, if we had a couple of hours to kill, I could sit here and give you a lot of extreme reactions to our show (laughs). Final question - and please be honest. Do you have any remorse about making all the average guys out there look and feel bad? AM: (Laughs) You know what, mate? I do feel bad for those guys that envy us, but at the end of the day it does require a lot of hard work. Also, we like to try and serve as a bit of inspiration physically - a lot of us have personal trainers and nutritionists. And we have a lot of guys that come to show, too, believe it or not - it's not just the women. They often ask us how we stay in shape, what's our fitness routine. So, if people can get some positives out of the experience, that's all the better. The show starts at 8 p.m. For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre.com or call 812-422-1515.The Victory is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville.

f you've ever visited Charlie's Mongolian BBQ on Diamond Ave. in Evansville, you've likely had the pleasure of meeting the man himself. The good news is, they've expanded. Located on the bustling east side, Big Bang Mongolian Grill offers the same healthy, delicious fare and familial hospitality. Co-owned by Charlie and former architect Ray Cao, it's already become a hit. Although Mongolian barbeque has been around for quite some time, and the origin is shrouded in legend, one thing is for sure - the flexibility offers something for every appetite. Besides the endless ingredients available to build your made-to-order plate, Big Bang also offers a few appetizers such as crab rangoon and jalapeno poppers, a kids' menu, and a small selection of domestic beer. For those who've never had the experience, you start off by building a bowl of veggies and protein, and create a mixture from almost 20 different sauces such as oyster, ginger, sesame, and house creations including "Charlie's Tears," a bold paste that comes with instructions on how to achieve your desired level of heat. The dish is then quickly cooked on a high-heat grill. I chose cabbage, zucchini, carrots, onions, green peppers, cilantro, mushrooms, and shrimp to which I added several sauces, but only one tear. The vegetables were still firm, full of flavor, and the shrimp had a good crunch. I also couldn't resist the crab rangoon, fried to a crispy golden brown and stuffed with cream cheese and imitation crab meat and served with tangy sweet and sour. If you save room for dessert, the buffet offers cookies, pudding, and cake. With such a plethora of buffet items, it's also a perfect place for vegans, vegetarians, and those on a gluten-free diet. Charlie and Ray's dream to provide a healthier alternative to Southern Indiana's penchant for heavy fried foods has been achieved once again. Not only is it a tasty, hands-on adventure, but it's an extension of a staple restaurant that Evansville and surrounding areas adore. With hopes to continue spreading the love, I don't believe Big Bang will be the last venture for the Caos. Everyone deserves a happy tummy, right? - Whitney Patterson Follow Big Bang on Facebook. CIGAR TALK 101: The Basics

WITH KYLE SWICKARD GM OF CIGAR! CIGAR!

Why You Should Smoke a Cigar in Evansville, IN

NEWS4U | RESTAURANT GUIDE Manna Mediterranean Grill 2913 Lincoln Ave. 812-473-7005 Milano’s Italian Cuisine 500 Main St. 812-484-2222 Oasis Mediterranean Grille 5702 E. Virginia St. 812-602-3660

There aren’t a whole lot of people that would identify our fair city as a cigar city. But historically, it was! Evansville was home to multiple cigar factories and even provided cigar rations to US and British soldiers in WWII. Even today you can find the General Cigar building at the corner of 2nd and Court Streets, designated with a Historical Marker plaque. Where Berry Plastics sits on First Ave was once home to the H Fendrich Cigar factory, which at one time laid claim to the largest cigar factory in the world. The Fendrich Cigar company operated in Evansville for more than 100 years and at its height employed over 1,500 people!

Olive Garden 1100 N. Green River Rd. 812-473-2903

Not only are cigars a big part of the history of Evansville, they are just damn fine things to enjoy. A premium cigar offers a huge array of aromas and flavors. Cigar tasting notes can be described like wine, tons of nuances and flavors that change throughout the smoking. Flavors like coffee, cocoa, pepper spice, butter, cream, herbal flavors, tea, and various baking spices are all common and distinct flavors premium cigars offer.

JAPANESE

Here at Cigar! Cigar! we have over 1,000 different premium cigars and a knowledgeable staff to help you select the r i g h t cigar for you. Pair that cigar with a scotch, bourbon, cognac, craft beer, or coffee. Add a couple good friends to the mix and you’ve got a perfect way to spend an hour. Wishing you all fine smokes and long ashes... KS Cigar! Cigar! is located at 500 N. Congress Ave., Suite B in Evansville / 812-401-1202.

NEWS4U | WESTERN KENTUCKY MUSIC SPOTLIGHT

Zach ASHBY Deep-voiced country singer bringing back the old school sound with a different spin

"I

don't do any of the new country - I don't care for it," explains 37-year-old singer/guitarist Zach Ashby. "I grew up listening to Johnny Cash, Ernest Tubbs and Hank Williams, Jr. - before he fell off the mountain and changed his style. I patterned my voice after what he sounded like then." Growing up on the outskirts of Slaughters, KY, Ashby picked up the ukulele as a kid before transitioning to guitar and composing his first song at the age of 14 - a song he still performs to this day. "It was a blues song called "Jody Popayne" about a guy partying on the river bank," he says. "My name wouldn't fit in the title, but I used to listen to a lot of Lightnin' Hopkins and Muddy Waters, so I just came up with something that sounded like a blues name." As his talent blossomed, Ashby started playing parties around the area sometimes in front of a hundred people or more. He didn't get paid a dime, but it was everything a teenager hell-bent on making music could ask for.

unemployment and had to come back and go back to work." Around the time that Ashby was commuting back and forth to Texas, he received a very exciting email from none other than John Carter Cash. The Man in Black's son was writing in regards to the CD of original songs that Ashby had sent him. "He wanted to meet me - so I went to The Cash Cabin Studio in Hendersonville, TN," he says, still amazed by the unlikely circumstance. "Talk about chills running up your back. I sat down and played him a song, and he said he would let people hear my CD as often as he could."

Like a lot of musicians, the big break for Ashby came with the coming of age - bar age, that is. Or it at least afforded him more opportunities to perform. Even in the often noisy environments of local establishments, his incredibly resonant baritone managed to cut through, pricking the ears of patrons with a deep, striking delivery. Ashby's voice was such a throwback to classic country that it immediately made an impact on everyone who heard it. Nowadays, the father of four no longer enjoys the raucous, party atmosphere of bars, but those early experiences helped shape his style - particularly, his penchant for speeding up classic country songs and putting "a little more pep" into them.

Ashby now has a backlog of nearly 60 songs and hopes to record a full length album when the time is right. He continues to play all around Western KY at restaurants, festivals, fairs, car shows and other family-friendly events and venues but rarely the bars. No matter the crowd, his old school sound always sparks a response. "I get a lot of people coming up and saying that they admire the way I do country music. You know, everybody gets some sort of criticism of their work, but I have never had anybody criticize mine - it feels really good."

Around 2011, Ashby started looking to expand his fan base - in fact, he found a whole new scene in Texas. His relatives in Dallas invited him down to play some of the Lone Star State's iconic venues and for the next two years, Ashby made the rounds once a month. "I performed in places like the White Elephant in Fort Worth, Willie's Place (Willie Nelson's bar), Randy White's BBQ and Love & War," he says. "I was laid off work at the time. Eventually I ran out of

S

triving to bring an awareness of the connection between health and physical activity, 2 Moms 'N Motion debuted the Autumn Classic last year, a very special 5K & 10K run/walk through beautiful Sandy Lee Watkins Park in Henderson, KY. The fitness team made up of active and motivated mothers (and some dads, too!) is on a mission to get people in the community moving and achieving great things. Above all, it's about spending time outdoors, experiencing the beauty of nature while keeping the body and mind fit. After a successful inaugural outing, the Autumn Classic is back to challenge runners and walkers of all ages to set and accomplish a fitness goal - which will hopefully encourage regular exercise. For Mom 'N Motion Lindsay Estes, staying fit is the key to being the best person she can be. “If by keeping active I can better play with my children, more easily pack in groceries and feel comfortable in my own body, then it’s worth all the effort. As trainers, we want to encourage our clients to be an active participant in their own life - to laugh, have fun and feel good! Participating in the Autumn Classic is a great opportunity to meet new friends, get involved in our beautiful community and to accomplish an admirable fitness goal.” The race starts at 9 a.m. For more info and to register, visit 2MomsNMotion.rocks.

NEWS4U | SPORTS

WITH BILLY EGELER Thank you, thank you, thank you: Time to acknowledge those who pour their heart and soul into racing Here we are, just about two months from the end of race season and Mother Nature is still a hot topic! Several races around the region were a wash-out in June and July but the racers and promoters continue giving it their all to get the shows in.

these folks a genuine THANK YOU and make sure they all know their efforts are truly appreciated.Â

Speaking of racers and promoters... Not often enough do we as racers, promoters, crew members, fans or even track workers give thanks to the ones pouring their hearts and souls into the sport. Frequently when a driver is interviewed at the track or on my radio show, they will give thanks to the fans and sometimes even the promoter but let's think about it, when was the last time that we as fans gave thanks? As a fan, I think we should all thank everyone involved in our sport. Thank you promoters/owners for giving a venue where we can watch our sport. Thank you for all the time, work and money you put out to be able to open each race. Thank you racers, crew members and the families of both for the countless hours and money you spend getting your race machines prepared to put a show on for us!

After mentioning the Safer Racer safety program recently, I have spearheaded another safety program to help racers that are under-protected in the region. I have begun collecting used safety equipment from racers that are upgrading or items that are simply no longer needed. These items are being given away to racers that are currently racing yet don't have the proper equipment because of cost or simply overlooked items. Used uniforms, helmets, driving shoes, driving gloves, neck collars and gently used racing harnesses are being donated to the program from racers all over the Midwest in an effort to make racers safer! I can't thank everyone enough that has helped thus far and I can't wait to work to make this program grow. Until next month, get out and support your favorite grassroots racing and track! Peace!

Thank you track workers (paid and volunteers) for making time in your week to work at the track and help orchestrate the entertainment we are provided. Being a promoter, racer, track worker, crew member or a family member of any of these is not easy. Many times there is so much time invested and very little monetary return. The very least we can do as fans is take a moment and give

NEWS4U | LOCAL/REGIONAL MUSIC

ON TAP PROJECT When genres collide: Local trio brings just about everything to the table, pursues new musical direction

I

f you spend much time listening to or reading a general discussion about music amongst a large group of people, it’s all but guaranteed that someone will gripe about the proliferation of subgenres. Just refer to a band on the heavier side of the spectrum as simply “metal” in an online forum; no sooner can you say “RIP In Peace” to your inbox, you’ll be flooded with comments and/or private messages correcting you on the appropriate hyphenated category said band should be neatly pigeonholed into. And while we can lay out the merits and demerits of increasingly specific subgenres such as “blackened death metal,” there is a clear culprit for their existence: the ‘90s. The era that gave us alt-country, G-funk, trip-hop, acid jazz, and enough others to possibly fill my entire word allotment is no doubt to blame for much of the pervasive trend of describing as specific a sound in as few of words as possible. So you can imagine my surprise when, despite my confidence in familiarity with a hefty number of subgenres, a video of On Tap Project’s first gig introduced me to a new one: Blackgrass. “Oh man, that was hilarious!” he laughs, shaking his head while recalling the incident to which I’m referring. I’m talking with Theophilus Akai - guitarist and one third of the band, along with bassist Johnny Coats and drum-

mer Dekar Baker (all three members share vocal duties) - about Johnny’s response to a heckler and her incredibly original cries of “Freebird!” at some point before the tape had started rolling. After Theo’s humorous explanation of the newly minted term, the band seamlessly tore into a hoedown that would make Roy Clark approvingly nod his head in that “Aw, shucks!” sort of way. Rest assured, no one else was left wondering if the band had the propensity for such diverse genres throughout the remainder of the show. In case this doesn’t paint a clear enough picture, it’s easy to gather that the band’s name comes from their keen ability to draw from a wide swath of the musical lexicon. “I’m from Ghana, so I grew up with a lot of African and world music,”Theo says when asked about his and the band’s musical influences. Add in some Latin flavor from his side of the family which hails from the Dominican republic, a bassist from New York, and a drummer from Evansville, and it becomes apparent how the members can also fluidly add funk, blues, rock, and jazz - not to forget bluegrass and country as touched upon earlier - to their repertoire. But all the musical influences in the world are for naught if the band doesn’t have the necessary chops to do them justice. Luckily, OTP’s membership

undoubtedly has talent to spare. But perhaps more important than their skill level is how well they read and play off of each other. “We really only practice once a week, and that’s usually at the open mic night we do on Mondays,” comes the response to my question of how often they practice. This belies a group who improvises with an adeptness that would make even a seasoned jam band jealous. “So many people just want to hear a band play covers. All of us in the band have done that at some point or another.” Look no further than their rendition of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” for proof that they can do both: Despite barely knowing the song at all, Theo and Johnny faithfully reproduce the chord progression while Dekar effortlessly lays down that four-on-the-floor kick drum and shuffling snare. He continues, “But after a while, you just need a way to scratch that creative itch. Any artistically inclined person needs that outlet.” The band has already been hard at work on cementing original songs and hopes to record them soon in Nashville (hopefully by the end of the year, Theo assures me). In the meantime, the only place to catch their special take on that most knee-slappin’ of southern music styles - along with whatever tongue-incheek subgenres they may create along the way - will be at their shows. Just don’t ask them to play “Freebird.” Theo laughs, “We might just have to learn that to spite the hecklers!” - Jonathan Gluff

Daniel Fitzgerald Self-described "colorist" proves that a career in art is still possible, even in today's "free" world

M

ost artists dream of making a living off their work - and, not surprisingly, the majority of them fail. Not necessarily because of a lack of talent, mind you; it’s just that the odds are stacked against success. In truth, art in all its forms has been devalued greatly,

66 |

especially over the last decade or so with advances in technology that have made it far too easy for consumers to effectively steal or “borrow indefinitely” if that sounds better - someone’s copyrighted material, whether an album, a book or a film, etc. When even some of the biggest bands in the world, for instance, choose not to record new material because it’s a nowin financial proposition, you know that times are particularly tough for the lower profile creative types who both live for the artistic process and also want to earn a living. And that’s what makes Evansville native Daniel Fitzgerald such an anomaly. The fact that the 50-yearold self-described “colorist”

August 2016 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

"I have to admit that I’m looking forward to the maturity. I understand what my [art] dealer in St. Louis was saying back in '94 when she told me that she didn’t want to deal with an artist until they’d been making art for 20 years - that's when it all starts to come together."

has sold virtually every painting he’s ever produced is beyond impressive. That he’s managed to sell a great number of those works while based out of our admittedly artist-unfriendly city (though it’s getting better all the time, to quote John Lennon) is almost unfathomable. But it just goes to show that persistence - combined with a little faith - can pay off in spades; or in the case of one of Fitzgerald’s more memorable sales, a $2000 cashier’s check from Kennebunkport, ME. It’s a long story… Bucking the stereotype of genius painters, Fitzgerald is neither tortured nor lonely. In reality, the father of two great kids grew up surrounded by artists and philosophers at home – brother Timmy, for example, is a local sculptor who works with steel. At home he was encouraged to pursue his quickly developing love of art, just not necessarily as a career path. For a time, however, as he progressed through his studies at USI and then a Masters program in printmaking at SIU, he contemplated a “real world” job in his field – with a caveat. “I could have potentially been a teacher as I liked working with artists, but more on a one-on-one basis outside of the university,” he explains. However, as Fitzgerald’s educational focus on graphic art gave way to a serious passion for painting and his raw, teenage talent evolved into a singular, more mature style, a whole new world opened up. Through art shows that he set up while in grad school, important contacts were made. Post-college, Fitzgerald expanded his artistic network, traveling around the U.S. (he called Orlando, FL and New Orleans home for a number of years) and into Europe where collectors were particularly taken by his striking use of color. Soon enough, paintings were not only being sold but commissioned, including a challenge to recreate Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper masterpiece. Other requests have involved bringing The Thinker sculpture to life on canvas and mimicking the unmistakable flair of Rembrandt. Remarkably, Fitzgerald has

passed these disparate, daunting artistic tests with flying colors, so to speak - and been appropriately rewarded monetarily. Throughout the month of July, Fitzgerald was the featured artist at Bokeh Lounge in downtown Evansville. The many canvases that adorned the walls (along with the mural that he painted last September) served to highlight the sheer breath of his talent, drawing much-deserved attention to his creative diversity. And yet, there's one particular style of painting that really stands out for Fitzgerald. "What I'll be known for when I'm dead is some of my geometry pieces," he says. "I had an exhibition at the Evansville Museum when I worked there back in the late '80s/early '90s. I hung a quilt exhibition - Amish quilts were so huge and geometric. That always stuck in my head. They were like paintings, huge displays on the wall. So beautiful." Now at the peak of his creative powers, Fitzgerald's artistic output has inevitably been slowed a bit by the demands of fatherhood and life in general. But he's aging quite gracefully, still amazed by what he's achieved so far and excited by the prospect of taking his craft to even higher places. "I have to admit that I’m looking forward to the maturity. I understand what my [art] dealer in St. Louis was saying back in '94 when she told me that she didn’t want to deal with an artist until they’d been making art for 20 years that's when it all starts to come together."

Beauty Date

With Dakyissa Cleon

Q:

Hi Kyis, my daughter is about to turn 13. She is now very concerned about her appearance and wearing makeup. Can you provide any back-to-school beauty tips for her?

A:

Sure! The first thing I would recommend is to make sure you are wanting to enhance your beauty for the right reasons. When I was your age, I began working to enhance my appearance for others as opposed to myself. I suffered from low self-esteem and lack of confidence. As a result, I began

caring more about what others thought about me and my appearance. If you are ready to begin enhancing your outer appearance make sure you have defined what beauty is for yourself. To me, a girl is beautiful because of the amazing qualities she possesses on in the inside.

Once you get that down, here are some things you can try to enhance your outer beauty: If it’s okay with your mom, apply black or dark brown mascara to give your lashes a slight pop.

Listen to your mother when she tells you,“Eat your fruits and vegetables!” It's true, what you put in your body matters! Too much junk food can harm your skin, causing breakouts, etc.

Drink plenty of waterdaily! This does wonders for your skin and other organs.

Drink plenty of waterdaily! This does wonders for your skin and other organs.

Take a moment to encourage yourself before heading out the door for school. Look in the mirror and tell yourself, "I am beautiful in God's eyes and I am going to have a great day!"

Cleanse and moisturize your skin both day and night! Don’t forget to apply your sunscreen before heading out the door. (Note: Using a moisturizer with SPF is a great way to get your sunscreen without the extra step.)

As you can see from her before and after picture, there is not much of a difference. That's because you are beautiful the way you are! At this age, I think it’s more important to focus on your inner beauty and skin care than makeup. Wearing makeup too early can have a negative effect on your mentality and skin. Well, I hope these tips were helpful to you! Special thanks to the beautiful Madison (Maddie) Epps for being my model. Have a beauty question you want to see answered in the magazine? Visit yourbeautydate. com or email me at info@yourbeautydate.com with the subject “Ask Kyis”. Until next time, Stay Beautiful, Stay Positive, and Stay Strong! Your Beauty Coach and Friend, DaKyissa

New local parents staying stylish while fighting the heat of a sweltering Indiana summer

W

hether in an air conditioned office, out in the sweltering heat, or somewhere in between, Indiana’s summers can be brutal on everyone, and as we move through August it will only get hotter and more humid out there! I talked with a variety of tri-state dwellers to see how they plan to adapt to the rising temps while remaining the stylish trend-setters they are, but besides being amazingly fashion-forward, these three have another thing in common: they are all new parents! That means not only are they looking good while fighting the heat, they are figuring out that parenting thing and rocking it with their little ones! Little Lachlan loves his mommy’s cool summer style. To beat the heat, Brynn Howell relies heavily on maxi dresses and skirts made of loose and lightweight materials. “I dig pairing a statement piece of jewelry with a subtle design or solid color dress, like a black maxi with a big ornate gold necklace,” she says.

Brynn and Jesse, Sarah agrees that lightweight and breathable materials are a lifeline. She's a fan of maxi dresses and likes pairing a crop top with a pair of high-waist shorts. Whether you’re a parent or not, and regardless of your daily environment, remember to just be true to your personal style and stay comfy and cool! Try a flowy dress or solid basics with a hat or with colorful jewelry and sandals, and try your best to stay cool! As always, remember to shop local boutiques and shops for your fashion needs! Amerie is located at 10 W. Jennings St. in Newburgh.

New daddy Jesse may be out of the spotlight now that adorable Lemon is here, but he's still a stylish guy regardless. He, too, agrees that lightweight materials are the way to go for summer digs. His preferences include classic basics, solid color quality t-shirts, and even Polo pocket tees. Sandals are a must and stretchy, dry-fit shorts are the way to go. “I like wearing styles I can find year after year without looking too hard,” Jesse says. Mommy to toddler Camden, Sarah Lasiter somehow still manages to present the epitome of style. “I’m all about comfort,” she says. Much like

Zooey Talks to Animals by John Thurgood

Zooey learned to talk to animals the same way she learned to talk to humans. She just listened. At first she could only hear what they were saying: her dog wanted to go outside, or the cat from next door would ask for a bite of her poptart. It wasn't until she started spending a lot of time in the forest behind her house that she began to talk back. There were things she knew she would never understand, like why the animals lived out there and the humans lived in houses away from the forest, but she didn't bother her new friends by asking about that. She mostly talked to them about their day. The deer were the most cheerful, the birds too. It was mostly the smaller animals that complained. They hated house cats, and they didn't like all the noise from the highway. One groundhog told her that there used to be a place where there were no cats and it was always quiet. “You could hear your own heartbeat,” the groundhog said. Zooey thought about it for a long time. She asked her mom, but her mom didn't take her seriously. She was busy cooking dinner, and when her dad came home, they got into a fight because her younger brother wouldn't stop crying. Finally, her dad grabbed the frying pan and tossed it into the sink. Zooey thought it was because he wanted her mom to take care of Gene, but they both started yelling after that. Gene started crying harder. The television was tuned to an advertisement for some kind of cleaning product. The ground hog was right, anywhere would have be quieter than living with humans. Zooey grabbed her brother, and led him out to the forest. It was dark by then, and they walked for a long time. She wanted to introduce her brother to her new friends, but they weren't around. Gene was still crying, but he was beginning to calm down, breathing heavily and wiping at his nose. She wanted him to feel safe out there, but once they stopped walking, he started crying again, louder than before. When she tried to calm him down, he only cried louder. She looked around for her animal friends. She wanted them to help, but all around her the sound of her little brother echoed across the leaf covered ground and between the trees.

NEWS4U | LOCAL OPINION

TO LIKE OR LIKE NOT

POST GRAD PERSPECTIVE FROM MARISA PATWA An Instagram post of the orange dreamsicle cheesecake you ate for dinner - 78 likes. A tweet saying: “Every girl out there wants a boyfriend but I just want pizza” - 18 likes and five retweets. A Facebook status that says, “Life’s a beach and I’m just playing in the sand,” with an artistic bikini mirror selfie you took 52 times just to get the right lighting, beneath - 27 likes and one share from your Aunt Lucy in Florida. But what do all of these likes, retweets and shares really mean? And why do we care so much about how many we get? I for one am guilty of caring too much about how “popular” I am on social media. My sister and I have actually gotten in fights before about us taking a picture of a moment we had together and then a second later, me asking her which filter she likes best so I can post it immediately. “I feel like you care more about taking this picture than you do hanging out with me,” she once said. It really stung. She was wrong of course - I cared equally about hanging out with her and posting a killer picture I was sure would get over 40 likes. Does that make me a bad person? No. But I don’t think it makes me the best one either. I remember once being devastated on my 15th birthday because everyone except my crush liked my birthday selfie. It was total heartbreak. But eventually I got over it. Because really, it does not matter and should not matter how “popular” you are on social media. Because isn’t actually being present for your grandparent’s 60th wedding anniversary more important than spending 20 minutes barking instructions at your mom on how to take the perfect photo of the three of you that makes you look the most flattering? I’m not saying taking pictures of wonderful moments in your life is wrong. In fact, I think it’s great. But these pictures should be about savoring memories. So the next time you’re at a concert, party or family celebration, take a photo to capture the moment and then put your phone away and actually enjoy it. Because I guarantee that the people you’re with in that moment like you more than the kid in your Algebra class who accidentally clicked like on your photo.

ASK THE PASTOR

THE

with Kevin Fleming of First Presbyterian Church

WRITE STUFF

Q:

Can you shed some light on the Law of God vs. the Law of Man and how the Black Lives Matter?

While there have been libraries full of books written on the subject of the Law of God vs. the Law of Man, this column cannot review the centuries of commentary on that subject. There is one intersection of the two, however, that can be addressed. That subject is justice. Throughout the pages of the Bible, the subject of justice is addressed again and again. Especially in the pages of the prophets, justice is to be one of the hallmarks of God’s people. Insuring the fair and equitable treatment of all - even the stranger in the midst of the people - is central to the scriptures. The laws we create are supposedly built on that foundation. But what we have seen in recent days, especially as it relates to the Black Lives Matter movement, suggests that justice is not being offered equally to all our people. Even the perception that injustice is accepted as the norm wounds our nation. The systemic racism that is still far too prevalent in our nation must be addressed and corrections made to our legal and criminal justice systems to insure that justice is for all – and especially those who have suffered injustice for far too long upon these shores. First Presbyterian Church is located at 609 SE 2nd St. / 812-423-6297.

with Jonathan Gluff

When Opinions Collide (or The Other Net Neutrality) One of my explicit goals with this column has been to stay as politically neutral as possible, and that’s a rather accurate microcosm of my everyday life as well. I’m quite proud of the fact that many of my more liberal friends consider me somewhat conservative, and my more conservative friends view me as slightly left-leaning. (To be fair, some also view me as extremely right or left, but often times both sides tend to jump to the conclusion that even agreeing slightly with the other is tantamount to treason.) As you may gather, saying my Facebook newsfeed is diverse in its viewpoints would be an understatement of the same order as saying “It sure is humid!” on an average July day in Evansville. Needless to say, this makes for interesting sociopolitical discussions, especially whenever I try to inspire a dialogue between my friends from opposite sides of the aisle. As much as I love a good old-fashioned internet flame war, I can sincerely say I would much rather see opposite sides of an argument find some modicum of common ground, and even greater still when one or both change some aspect of their belief system. Believe it or not, it is possible to occasionally change one’s mind. I can think of numerous crystalline moments in my formative years where I had a great epiphany that changed some chunk of my worldview, and I’ve had the fortune of helping others have one from time to time. By no means am I out to brainwash anyone; most viewpoints cannot be judged as completely untenable, even if we personally do not agree. None of this was so much a conscious decision on my part as it was a result of practicing what I preach. When I said “No one has a monopoly on the truth” to close my first article, I meant that to the fullest extent. I love that my friends keep me from falling into the proverbial echo chamber. I am a firm believer that you can always learn something from anyone, no matter your religion (or lack thereof ), race, ideology, education level, profession, family history, etc. No matter whether Democrat vs Republican, Christian vs atheist, IU vs Purdue, country vs rap - educating yourself on a subject by no means requires you to agree with it. But to wholesale rule out any perspective benefits no one, least of all yourself.

NEWS4U | POLITICS

WORDS

FROM

WHITNEY by Whitney Patterson

TRI-STATE POLITICS with Bryan Fox

Like stubborn weeds that just won't die I don't know about you, but the internet hurts my brain recently, even more than usual. It's a curious time-traveling landscape of either the '60s or the '90s, and one meme pretty much describes it all - "The internet right now is either Pokemon or racism. There is no in-between." This is also not to say that nothing else is happening, but these two vastly different subjects have been absolutely dominating social media and news outlets. I can't help but feel that one is a distraction from the other - and distractions are good, but that's how key issues keep getting put on the back burner, for you know, like centuries. I don't claim to know the answer, but one thing should be brutally clear to everyone - racism, whether it's individualized or systemic, is alive and well. Ok, let's be honest - it's blossoming like stubborn weeds that just won't die. The Black Lives Matter movement has people at each other's throats, both literally and metaphorically. And it should. It's 2016 - are we REALLY still doing this? Of course, I'm not in agreement with the events in Dallas, but I'm also pretty damn sick of seeing what feels like never-ending racially-fueled police brutality and listening to privileged white people talk about "All Lives Matter." They should. But they don't. And until oppressed groups of people are able to live without fear of racial aggression, stop getting gunned down by those who are supposed to "Serve and Protect" and those in blue who abuse their power are out of jobs and held accountable for their actions, then NO. All lives don't matter, at least not to murderers and their apologists. We as citizens have a duty as well - to speak out. You can share memes and statistics and prayer requests from behind your computer, but feet on the pavement is what makes a difference. What was accomplished in the '60s and '70s was not achieved through virtual well-wishing. Now, if only we could download an app to help us seek out racism and destroy it, we'd be much better off. Until then, actions speak louder than words, and if you watch it happen without standing up, you're no better than the oppressor. Signed, Whitney Patterson, a BLM ally

Mayor Winnecke should run for governor With Indiana Governor Mike Pence chosen to be Trump's running mate, the path is clear for Evansville's two-term mayor to run for higher office. Despite stating that he has "no plans" to do so, Winnecke certainly has the resume for the job. First, I-69, created and expanded under the last two governors, has made Evansville feel more like an Indiana city and less like the state’s badlands, enabling much easier access to Bloomington and Indianapolis. A Winnecke ticket would allow Hoosiers to see the benefits of I-69 and remind its citizens that it was the Republicans who really got the dirt moving. Second, during Winnecke’s five years as mayor, he has had a pro-active administration, especially in terms of shaping Evansville's downtown area; currently the IU Medical Center is in the process of being built along with a 5-star Hilton Hotel. His leadership has the city on the upward swing through innovation and foresight. Finally, Winnecke is the first two-term Republican mayor in nearly 40 years. In fact, he was re-elected in a landslide despite Evansville's democratic leanings. If he was to team-up with former twoterm Indianapolis mayor Greg Ballard as either the governor or lieutenant governor in 2016, they would be a tough team to beat. For Winnecke, the future is bright. GETTING TO KNOW...

Amanda Coburn Special Events, Development & Media Coordinator Vanderburgh Humane Society

For the last few months, we've been partnering with the VHS for the "Success Stories and Future Friends" page (see page 80) and Amanda has been instrumental in picking out the shelter animals to be highlighted as well as the "parents" for the adoption spotlight. She bravely accepted our request to get to know her a little better.

Average number of times I cry each week... I would say 1-2, depending on if we have a very sad, sick, or injured animal come into the shelter. Or if we have a great adoption of an animal we’re all attached to. Happy tears! If I was reincarnated as a dog... I’d be a Welsh Corgi. (The actual cutest breed ever.)

Something that truly annoys me... Negativity about our community! There are so many exciting things happening, and being bitter or pessimistic just doesn’t help. Stop whining & be part of the solution! Best day of my life so far... A tie between my wedding day and the day our daughter was born.

When I need to cut loose... I dance around the house with my earbuds in, or have a Harry Potter movie marathon. I’ve never been a partyer!

A job that I would never want... Plumbing. Yuck! I’m grateful for those that do it!

My thoughts on the new Pokemon GO app... Ultimately, it’s genius. It gets people active, gets them out in their communities seeing important places, and strangers are socializing & bonding with each other. Just be smart & don’t walk into traffic!

Favorite part about working at the VHS... Everything. Seriously. The animals, the community support, knowing we make a difference every day. I have a great boss and amazing coworkers who support each other. When one of us has a crazy idea that just might work, we run with it!

My awkward stage in childhood... It was definitely in elementary school. Middle & high school were much better. I never grew out of some of my awkwardness and that’s okay! Likelihood that Big Foot will be captured... Minimal. He’s crafty. I think he’ll elude us as long as possible!

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT

Chelsea, Levi & Remington Boonville residents Chelsea Smith and Levi Murphy, already the proud owners of a oneyear-old potbellied pig, weren't necessarily looking to add to their family - which also includes a Chihuahua - but when they visited the VHS a couple months ago, a "little" sweetheart named Rogue unexpectedly captured their hearts. As Chelsea tells it, this adorable potbellied pig ran right up to them as they approached her pen, and she immediately knew that it was meant to be. In fact, Rogue later renamed Remington or "Remi" - looked like a twin of the couple's pig at home. So, after a painless adoption process and some useful tips from the friendly VHS staff (as well as a cutup sweet potato treat for Remi's ride to her new forever home), the trio was headed back to Boonville. By all reports, Remi made fast friends with everybody back at the house and the whole family is getting along great - the pigs even sleep in the bed some nights. Chelsea says that when her Chihuahua passes on, she may well return to the VHS to adopt another dog. She loves the staff and is especially impressed by the cleanliness of the building and the fact that the animals are clearly very well cared for.

MOVIE R EVIEWS The Invitation (Unrated) Drafthouse Films

When your ex invites you to a dinner party with estranged close friends, the outcome usually results in one of two ways uncomfortable or mildly uncomfortable. Throw in a little bit of new relationships, your former home, and the remnants of grief from a child's passing, and you're left with a third possibility. When Will (Logan Marshall-Green) and his current girlfriend Kira (Emayatzy Corinealdi) accept an invitation to such from his ex-wife, although inherently strange, the interaction - even padded with friends - has a sinister undertone. Beyond locked doors and cultish rhetoric, Will is left with a paranoid feeling is it his inability to move beyond his own despair, the apparent willingness to do so of Eden (Tammy Blanchard, Into the Woods), or are his suspicions legitimate and contingent upon saving lives? With fresh, mature direction by Karyn Kusama (Girlfight) and an eerie soundtrack by Theodore Shapiro, The Invitation is a nail-biting thriller that leaves an audience of distrustful viewers questioning the extent of one's ability to shed their grief without destroying the process and hope of another.

The Fundamentals of Caring (TV-MA) Netflix

Retired writer Ben Benjamin (Paul Rudd, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) makes a mid-life decision to become a certified caregiver. Dodging a divorce and dealing with the death of their son, Ben's choice seems strange, as he's barely caring for himself. When he meets his first client, however, it is apparent that a symbiotically cathartic relationship is on the horizon. Trevor (Craig Roberts, Red Oaks) is a kid with a single mother who needs all the help she can get Trevor is a quirky and clever young man who also happens to suffer from Duchenne muscular dystrophy, confined to a wheelchair and incapable of performing most basic functions alone. Stripping away bitterness and re-learning to truly live life, Ben and Trevor embark on an adventure, gaining much more than pins on a map. It's a laugh-through-tears comedy-drama focusing on learning more about one's self through the eyes of strangers. It premiered as Sundance's closing night film to mixed reviews, although I have difficulty finding anything negative to say - it's hilarious, heartwarming, and honest. Adapted for film and directed by TV powerhouse Rob Burnett, it's another sharp little ax to chip away at the necessity of Hollywood. - Whitney Patterson

NEWS4U | MUSIC REVIEWS Whitney Light Upon The Lake Secretly Canadian Chicago’s Whitney is the resulting musical project after indie rock band Smith Westerns split up in 2014. Drummer Julien Ehrlich and guitarist Max Kakacek continued on together and recorded Light Upon the Lake in the fall of 2015. Whitney is a poppier project than Smith Westerns - no fuzz or distortion on this album. Rather, LUTL is dominated by Ehrlich’s falsetto zigzagging through Kakacek’s clean chords that create a soulful groove throughout the album’s 30 minute runtime. It’s a brief, catchy album that will win the hearts of indie fans and pop fans alike.

Schoolboy Q Blank Face Top Dawg/Interscope Since his first independent album in 2011, Schoolboy Q has consistently been one of the most interesting rappers in hip hop. His second album, Habits and Contradictions, was one of the best hip hop releases of the year, but was perhaps overshadowed by labelmate Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city. After 2014’s weak (though still pretty good) Oxymoron, Schoolboy is back and at the top of his game with Blank Face, a hard hitting album with features from Kanye West, E-40, and Vince Staples.

Swans The Glowing Man Young God / Mute For the past thirty years, Michael Gira has fronted experimental noise rock group Swans. The Glowing Man serves as the end of a trilogy and era of sorts in the band's history. Though it’s the fourteenth album under the Swans moniker, it's only the third for Swans’ current lineup. The Glowing Man wraps up the emotionally draining and sonically daunting style that started with 2012’s The Seer and 2014’s To Be Kind. The Glowing Man is Gira and company at their harshest, darkest, and most violently aggressive it’s a beautiful thing. - Russell Finn

MUSIC Garbage Strange Little Birds Stunvolume

Alt-grunge rockers Garbage have toyed with us over the years, releasing lackluster compilations amidst supposed hiatuses and occasional glimmers of hope. As someone who wore out my top 40 hits recorded on tape from the radio, I've always held onto the idea that maybe Shirley Manson and the gang would come back with a vengeance, but ya know, if not, we'd always have Garbage and Version 2.0. Strangely enough, 20 years later, they've proven that the haunting, tinkly snarl that wormed its way into our hearts long ago might just have phoenix power after all. Although an obvious nod to their original sound, the youthful brooding has reached a level of maturation - lamenting vulnerability, both crunchy and velveteen with industrial flavor. It's weird, because the album doesn't necessarily pioneer any kind of new sound, but neither is it old hat. "Empty" is a pure pop afterbirth, however, chock full of angst and insecurity alongside jangly riffs and thundering percussion. "If I Lost You" is sweet and filmy, but "Night Drive Loneliness" is like Portishead vs Radiohead and might be my favorite track, if not for "Even Though Our Love is Doomed" - "Why do we kill the things we love the most.../ Such strange little birds/ Devoured by our obsessions." Welcome back, guys. We've missed you.

The Temper Trap Thick as Thieves Glassnote Records If not for the success of "Sweet Disposition," I'm not sure we would have ever heard from The Temper Trap again. Besides a few singles filtered into the remix abyss, they seemed to have peaked upon their first studio release. While listening to Thick as Thieves, however, I'm not quite ready to label them one-hit wonders. Of course, we all love U2, right? Ok, maybe that's not totally fair, but as a band chosen to open for Coldplay, there's going to be a certain general croony dude vibe. Dougy Mandagi embraces his inner diva against mid-level energy instruments. "Burn" is probably the catchiest track, an age-old metaphor of fiery love. "Closer" caught my attention, an interesting variation of Mandagi's vocals, synthy and nostalgic (at times) of bands like Depeche Mode, but of course, the arms-wide-open chipperness of U2 sneaks back in. The operatic, throat-lumpinducing vocal stylings return on "Lost." The lilt and layering of "Tombstone" are impressive, a song of hope through regret and distrust - "Lions all around me/ Truth can be lies and the devil don't want you free." But the voice - the voice - is what holds all of it together. Yes, the music is multidimensional, clean, tight, but The Temper Trap is just one of those bands that would fall through the cracks without its lead singer. Good save.

REVIEWS Mitski Puberty 2 Dead Oceans

I'll admit when I'm wrong, and I definitely need to in this case, as a denial of guilt would be a slap in the face to existing fans. I try to keep abreast of the never-ending cornucopia of existing music - new, old, indie, mainstream, local - but I've just recently discovered the world-traveled, Japanese-American artist Mitski (Mitsuki Laycock) thanks to a recommendation from an enthusiastic, jam-savvy chick. Her fourth studio release in just a few short years, Puberty 2 is frank and desperately self-reflective with both surfy twinkles and theatrical elements wrapped around one of the most soothing yet wrenching voices I've heard in a long time. Think Florence meets Girlpool with some Feist-y Best Coast, but even then, justice isn't really done. Oh, to be 25 again - the holy sh*t shock of hurtling into adulthood and feeling out the landscape of swinging in the balance, not really knowing who you are or what's really important in the long-run. Terrifying. Yet somehow Mitski is able to mold those feelings into eerily energetic tracks that don't leave us feeling completely hopeless. "Your Best American Girl" displays her talent - vocals rivaling Shara Worden and a riot grrrl soundtrack that should sound messy yet makes perfect sense. "Thursday Girl" shows her fluidity - despair coated in an electronic dream with lashing guitar. Do yourself a favor. Listen.

The Avalanches Wildflower XL/Modular/EMI/Astralwerks After 16 long years, The Avalanches are back with their highly anticipated sophomore album, Wildflower. Fans of the band’s Since I Left You will be pleased to hear The Avalanches seldom detract from their signature feel - dozens of samples stuff the album with lush textures, angelic harmonies and absolute joy. Wildflower takes you on a road trip on a beautiful sunny day. As one song smoothly transitions into the next (much like on Since I Left You), you feel like you are cruising with the windows down and rolling through the peaks and troughs of a Midwest countryside. But unlike that album, Wildflower finds The Avalanches having many guest vocalists appear on the album. In addition to the obscure vocal samples used throughout, the album features vocal contributions from Danny Brown, MF Doom, Father John Misty, Ariel Pink, David Berman, Biz Markie, and several others. The many features on Wildflower set it apart from Since I Left You in a way. Though the album serves one seamless groove to listeners, the features make certain songs stand out more, allowing them to be enjoyed without the rest of the album. Wildflower definitely belongs to no other group than The Avalanches. It’s a great comeback album that welcomes new fans with a fresh sound for 2016 and rewards old fans for waiting 16 years for a second album. - Russell Finn

Band of Horses Why Are You Ok? Interscope Not so much Southern as folky (and a bit more commercialized thanks to producer Rick Rubin), Band of Horses has released a collection of pretty little ditties. With a more organic, homegrown lyrical venture this time around, Bridwell's age and family situation is starting to show, and not necessarily in a bad way. Holed up writing in a garage as a father of four as opposed to the rock star always on the road, the thematic material is drawn from a wholly different environment. The album opens with "Dull Times/ The Moon," which starts off as a shoegaze-y Pink Floyd sort of track, poetic in a simple sense, and results in full BOH form with punchy vocals between woos and full-throttle instruments. While it sort of romanticizes the mundane, there appears to be more comfort in that than regret - "Dull times, let 'em seep into your bones/ Keep it kind, always in time." "Hag" addresses the complacency reached in long-term relationships - "If I'm not the point in carrying on/ Why spend half the time indifferent/ and the other half alone?" Again, Bridwell exhibits a laissez faire mentality, and paired with his distinctive, relaxing vocals, it's difficult to disagree that "Home is where the heart is," especially on the stomper "Throw My Mess." Hey, Ben. Your roots are showing. - Whitney Patterson

NEWS4U | BEER REVIEWS Gerst Amber Ale

Dogfish Head Biere de Provence Saison

Daniel Knight • 3 Believe it or not, I’d never had this beer. It pours with almost no head and what there is fades to a thin film right away. For a minute or so a few fine bubbles passed through it to the top. The nose is malt. Flavor follows the nose with mostly malts and a subtle slightly bitter finish. As it should be. There’s not a lot going on (flavor complexity, etc) with this ale but it’s pretty respectable. The mouthfeel is nice and it’s a very drinkable brew. Paul Bragin • 4 A quickly disappearing white head tops this deep amber ale. The scent profile contains malt notes with a lot of sweetness first and a good measure of yeast aromas. More yeast flavors, similar to bread, play on the tongue with the first sip. This beer will be a great one to have on hand during the hot summer. Pair it with fried chicken or German dishes like beer cheese dip or Wienerschnitzel. Jabez Martinez • 3.5 This is a clear amber beer. I remember having a Gerst that came from the Evansville plant a long time ago. I was excited to see if the beer tasted like the Gerst I remembered. I have to say it did not. I would like to find others that remember the beer back then and hear their opinion. This one has a light sour aroma. It seems to get sweeter the more you drink it. It's just a little better than average but not that great.

Daniel Knight • 3.75 Bière De Provence is a Saison, also known as a farmhouse ale. It’s mostly about the yeast. It’s brewed with fresh herbs to give it a floral nose and a unique, dry spice. It pours a clear golden color with a white film for a head that retains indefinitely. For a few minutes after pouring there’s a lot of carbonation. It smells of fresh herbs and yeast. I mainly pick up on the lavender. There’s a bit of citrus there too. The mouthfeel is medium and the flavor is a little strange at first but it was quick to grow on me. I recommend that you give it a go. Paul Bragin • 4.5 A thin white head tops this gold-colored ale when poured into a tulip glass. Floral notes from the herbs used in the brewing make up a good portion of the scent profile, along with some malt notes. The floral notes continue with the first sip of the beer, followed by spice flavors in the finish. This beer has limited availability, so pick up some while you can. Pair it with eggplant parmesan, fingerling potatoes or roasted chicken. Jabez Martinez • 4 I could smell the lavender in this beer right off the bat. I gave it a higher score because they put lavender, marjoram and bay leaves in a beer which I thought was a little odd. I really wondered if I would be able to drink it. It's not bad but it just seems a little weird drinking those flavors. It also has an 8.3 % ABV. I would rank this as one of the most interesting beers I have tried in a long time. I just wonder what mad scientist decided to brew this beer.

Cider Boys Strawberry Magic

Daniel Knight • NR Here’s the deal. This is not a beer. Not even a little bit. It’s barely even a cider. Its ingredients include sugary concentrates, “natural flavors” and a preservative. I smelled it, tasted it, then poured it out. Really, it's more like a soda pop. I respectfully decline to review this one. I recommend that you drink more healthy beverages, like beer. Paul Bragin • 2.5 As soon as the cap comes off, the scent of strawberries is present in this slightly goldencolored cider. The strawberry scent remains so prominent that no apple scent makes it to the nose. The apple begins to come through during the first sip, with tart flavors in the forefront and strawberry flavors in the finish. This cider could be very refreshing on a hot summer day. Pair it with strawberry shortcake or other strawberry desserts. Jabez Martinez • 4.5 I could smell the strawberry in this beer right away. It's very sweet and has great carbonation. The flavor has more of the strawberry and just a little bit of apple. The only drawback I see in this beer is that it's so sweet; I could only have about one. It's like drinking dessert. This is one of the best hard ciders I have tried.

finish. I really enjoyed this brew. The mouthfeel is light and good and the Belgian-style yeast with a light hops kiss makes for a very drinkable brew. Paul Bragin • 4.5 A decent white head crowns this straw-colored beer. A combination of malt and fruit scents from the hops control the nose. The tasting reveals more of the same, with malt flavors first, followed by tart fruit flavors in the finish. Although not a wheat beer, people who like them might enjoy this. This beer seems versatile enough that it could pair with a pretty wide variety of dishes. This beer is a welcomed addition to Evansville markets.

Daniel Knight • 3.75 The can calls this one a blonde ale, but technically Gold Standard is a Belgian style Pale Ale. It pours a slightly hazy orangish color with a thin, white head that dissipates quickly. A thin lacing is retained until the beer is finished. Carbonation is light. The nose is quite subdued. The notes are of light maltiness and grassy hops. The taste is yeasty with a slight malt flavor followed by a light bitterness on the

Jabez Martinez • 4.5 This is a hazy straw-colored beer with a major amount of carbonation. It has a light wheat and light malt flavor and all the Belgian characteristics. It also has a nice crisp and clean finish. I have never heard of this brewery but will keep an eye out for this and other beers they may put out.

NEWS4U | BEER REVIEWS Killian’s Irish Red

Third Shift Amber

Daniel Knight • 3 This one pours up clear with a reddish amber color. I couldn’t pour it all at once because of its over-zealous head. No lace. Its smell is malty sweet. Not bad, but not that great either. The taste is of sweet malts and some toasted hops. Maybe a very subdued hop touch there too. It’s not bad tasting, but on the whole, too sweet for my taste. One the other hand, if you’re entertaining a group of mostly domestic beer drinkers they’ll likely like it just fine.

Daniel Knight • 3 This one pours up a clear, medium amberorange color. It has average effervescence and a two finger head that settles down to a half finger and sticks around for a long time. A little lacing there too. I wish it smelled and tasted as good as it looks. Don’t get me wrong. It’s not bad, but it’s not that good either. The aroma is light and mostly of yeast. Not bad. The taste is malty sweetness and caramel with a subtle metallic undertone. No noticeable hops, light, bland, and watery.

Paul Bragin • 4 A thin white head tops this reddish coppercolored ale and quickly disappears. Sweet malt dominates the scent profile. More malt presence hits the tongue with the first drink. This classic is probably the first introduction many beer drinkers had to craft beer. This beer is always a good one to have on hand all the time. Pair it with fish and chips, chicken wings, strip steak, baby back ribs or a cheeseburger with caramelized onions.

Paul Bragin • 4 A thick and slightly off-white head forms on this lager. A good blend of hops and malt fill the nose, with malt notes staying strong at first, followed by a hint of hops in the end. Sipping the beer brings malt flavors to the tongue first, with a wrestling match between the hops and malt during the finish. This is a great introduction for a craft beer novice. Pair this with hamburgers or bratwurst.

Jabez Martinez • 4 I have been drinking Killian’s for years. It's a reddish-colored beer with an Irish beer taste but not as heavy as a Guinness. I have found it on sale regularly at IGA. It's smooth with a bit of the coffee flavor and sweet malts but I would consider this a lighter side of the Irish beers.

Jabez Martinez • 4 I have always wanted to try this beer but just never selected it. It's a clear amber beer with sweet malt flavor as found in some lagers. It's very smooth and easy to drink but has a higher than average sweet flavor to it. That's not a bad thing; I just found it a little surprising.

TAP TALK

WITH JOHN GREENWELL | OWNER OF BEEF 'O' BRADYS

T

his month I'd like to relay the results of a study run by global consumer research company Mintel. This study presented trends in the alcohol industry, and particularly the beer and craft beer segments. It found that 27% of all beer launches in 2015 were "flavored" beer, which is defined by them as not only Spice/Herb/Vegetable beers, but a large percentage of fruit beers. They also found that 20% of all beer drinkers had had flavored beer and 58% of drinkers of all kinds, not just beer drinkers, were interested in trying flavored beer.

The Old Fashioned: An amazing beer from the Angry Orchards Edge series. The Old Fashioned is made with a blend of American apples and is aged on oak with dried tart cherries, California grown navel orange peel, and charred bourbon barrel staves, offering citrus and cherry aromas with a bright apple flavor and slight vanilla notes. 6.5% ABV. Come out and try these ciders today at Beef ‘O’ Brady’s. Don’t forget that Beef’s is your fantasy football headquarters. Schedule your fantasy draft at Beef’s and receive a free appetizer and draft board for your party.

Ciders also continue to perform very well, particularly with Millennials (as if we need to be told that). That particular segment grew 5-fold between 2010 and 2015. 23% of Millennials said they enjoyed cider, in comparison to 15% of the entire drinking population. Another interesting stat was that 30% of all beer drinkers said they had consumed "craft-style" beers, meaning essentially Shock Top, Blue Moon and the like, and 23% said they had purchased "true" craft beer as defined by the Brewers Association.

8177 BELL OAKS DR • NEWBURGH • (812) 490-9464

I would recommend that if you are looking to diversify your portfolio of drinkable beers, you need to get out and try different flavors and different breweries. Craft beer has so many new flavor profiles out there that you can find the beer that truly fits any and all people. Here are my two recommendations for August. ACE Pineapple Hard Cider: First pineapple cider developed in the world. Instant sweet taste with tart finish and mixes well with other liquors. Extremely refreshing and tastes amazing. Inspired by the House Family’s annual visit to the beautiful Hawaiian Islands, Pineapple Hard Cider is an ideal drink for tropical hot and humid climates. 5% ABV.

NEWS4U | WINE REVIEWS

Walter the Wine Guy Let's talk Chardonnays: Liquor Locker's resident expert has all kinds of tasty recommendations

[] 7

GREAT PICKS FOR

In the beginning, I was an “ABC” wine drinker: ANYTHING BUT CHARDONNAY. But that was the past, and to be honest, the Chardonnay I was drinking was probably good, but I was drinking it WRONG.

Chardonnay is one very versatile grape! If you like a crisp wine with LOTS of mineral, a fruit forward wine that’s smooth and creamy - how about a wine that’s tart and bubbly? Chardonnay can do all of this and more! I'm going to attempt to try and give you as much information as I can about Chardonnay, but I know that I'm going to miss some stuff, so I will apologize in advance. With that being said, let me begin!

AUGUST

Chardonnay, as we currently know it, traces its journey back to France, though it's grown all over the planet! AND to top it off, this grape really does taste different depending on where and, most importantly, WHO is making the wine. There are so many currently produced that it may become overwhelming and you just might want to give up, but if you have the time and money I would implore you to try some different ones - you just may surprise yourself. To OAK or not to OAK, now that is the question! If you're a fan of KendallJackson Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay, which by far is one of the most popular Chardonnays in the country, you're probably a person who likes a Chardonnay that is aged in oak barrels. Many are produced this way; the oak barrel imparts flavors, from toasty wood notes to light vanilla flavors. The type of oak is also very important. If the wine is done in French or European oak, the wine will pick up a vanilla note, depending on how long it's left in the barrel. When American oak is used, usually sparingly, it picks up a woodier flavor, again depending on the length of time it's allowed to age in barrel. If you read the tech notes, you will also see how much of the oak is new, which would be more flavorful than one or two year old oak. The other option is not to age in oak. This is done by making the wine in stainless steel or like the French do, in neutral oak, using older oak barrels that do not impart any oak flavor. This creates a wine that is crisp, tart, and in some cases, more fruit forward. Now, this is a VERY general statement due to the versatility of Chardonnay and how it's treated by the winemaker. When I opened this article I mentioned I was drinking Chardonnay wrong. This was because I was drinking it too cold! Many people do that today. Chardonnay is a wine that is temperature sensitive. If you like a wine served as cold as beer, then you probably shouldn’t drink Chardonnay. In most cases, you should serve Chardonnay closer to 50 degrees. This really helps the flavors and aromas to become more pronounced and the experience to be much more enjoyable.

So now here are the Chardonnays that I like to drink and why. For an everyday, inexpensive, easy to drink wine, I would drink Dark Horse California Chardonnay. It's from the Gallo family of wines and really OVER delivers for the price. It’s under 10 dollars a bottle and started its life on restaurant wine lists served by the glass. It did so well that production was ramped up and they put it up for retail sale! It has nice notes of toasty oak, with subtle apple and

tart pear flavors. The oak lends a slight spiciness, and the wine has a wonderful, long, smooth finish. My next choice is also from the Gallo stable, it’s their Columbia Winery, Columbia Valley Chardonnay. Priced between 10 and 15 dollars a bottle, it's very affordable. This wine has had less oak treatment so the wine has a wonderful, almost Granny Smith apple tartness that makes it a really good wine to chill a little more, say 40 degrees, without much loss in flavor. I would serve this wine with shrimp or lump crab cocktail and a piece of baguette. The tartness will accent the sweetness of the shellfish and would play very well together!

Another Washington State Chardonnay is Eve Chardonnay, from Charles Smith Wines. The price is good, usually under 15 dollars. It's sourced from the new Ancient Lakes region in Washington; once lumped into the Columbia Valley, EVE it's now a separate C H A R DO N NAY growing region that This is one of the wines has its own unique that has a more “French profile. This is one Style," with a nice of the wines that mineral laden profile. has a more “French Style," with a nice mineral laden profile, but with tart apple notes that seem to come from many Chardonnays from Washington. It's noticeably done in neutral oak barrels, with a slight amount of malolactic creaminess that smooths out on the finish. Back into California, there is Franciscan Estate Napa Valley Chardonnay. This is a classic California Chardonnay. It's sourced from the Carneros region of the Napa Valley, one of the best places to get a great Chardonnay, in my humble opinion. This one is in the reasonable price point, under 20 dollars, which is low for wines from the that region. The wine is fermented in French and American oak barrels, and is aged on the lees, which imparts a smooth mouth feel and a creaminess on the finish. I would love to serve this with warm brie and sliced tart apples.

$20 + dollar range.

In the 20+ dollar range I would probably recommend Napa Cellars Napa Valley Chardonnay. It's a wonderfully drinkable Chardonnay that is done in French oak, with 29% new oak. The remainder of the oak is used oak stays and 10% is done in stainless, then blended. This produces the creamy vanilla fullness and yet a really nice crisp background fruitiness. Also in this price range is Mer Soleil “Silver” from the Wagner Family of Caymus fame. This wine comes from the Santa Lucia Highlands in Monterey County. It's fermented in concrete to impart a distinct minerality that gives this wine a point of view different from many others from California. A definite MUST TRY wine. This wine can take a deeper chill and would be great on a hot, humid day. Mer Soleil makes another Chardonnay, Mer Soleil Reserve, also from Santa Lucia. Costs a bit more, done in French oak, and as good as Chardonnay can get.

M ER SOL EIL " SIL V ER" A must try wine! This edition of WTWG ran a little long. I really wanted to let you know about a few more wines, but I would be remiss if I did not tell you about Domaine Bousquet Reserve Chardonnay from Argentina. It is fully organic, but don’t hold that against them; it's a truly great Chardonnay at a great price. It runs about 16 dollars and is just an enjoyable experience. Done in French oak, it’s got great tropical fruit flavors, a nice amount of crispness, and a smooth finish. Well, I think I have tried my best to give you as much information as I could in such a short time. If you have not noticed I really do like Chardonnays, and I honestly hope you will give them another try if you've put them on the back burner. I know there are some that will say I forgot to mention some other Chardonnays that they may feel are better, and I agree. I didn't say anything about French Chardonnay, and I really am sorry about that - maybe next time. Oh, before I forget, a lovely lady asked me about a wine she had in Nashville. You know who you are! I looked into it, it’s quite expensive, is only available online, and does not have distribution in Indiana. Sorry. Until next month, Walt
