With a new name and updated sound, local songstress debuts "I Can Do It Too," the first of four singles recorded with Black Cat's Steve Tyner

It took a little longer than anticipated, but Lauri Andrick's musical vision is finally seeing the light. Known for rocking out with the best of them during her time as frontwoman for the 90's-inspired DRK WTR, she's been working on making an artistic U-turn since leaving the band awhile back, edging towards a more acoustic and atmospheric approach - a change in direction that more accurately reflects her singersongwriter roots. But Andrick hasn't been going it alone. Like many of the tri-state's best musicians, she turned to Steve Tyner at Black Cat Recording to help bring her vision to life, to expand it, even. The two convened in the studio intermittently over the last year, toiling away over a handful of tracks - several of which Andrick debuted live in late May during a performance at Your Brothers Bookstore in downtown Evansville. Now "Loralye"Andrick's new moniker taken from a past nickname - has finally dropped the official recorded version of "I Can Do It Too," the first of four singles to be released in the coming weeks and months.

While the opening few bars of acoustic finger-picking certainly signal a singersongwriter vibe, the staccato synth sequence that appears shortly after lends the track a pop feel - in tandem, the guitar and keys are a perfect match, creating an etherealness that's only enhanced by Andrick's vocals which float effortlessly over the mix. The overall effect is a delightful wooziness as she sings about her head being on fire and out-of-date meds. Andrick's always had a way with words and her wittiness is on full display here, leading to a chorus where she flips the script, delivering a direct message with elongated syllables for added impact: "I've been watching you... and I can do the things you do."

Right through to the song-ending guitar strum, Tyner's contributions to this mesmerizing piece of work are clear - his tasteful production flourishes and decision to give the track an electronic foundation prove he's got a complete grasp of what Andrick hoped to achieve sonically. Now we'll just have to wait to hear what else the two of them have up their sleeves.
