DROWNING POOL EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW Guitarist CJ Pierce sits down for a wide-ranging discussion about the band's past, present and future

T

he late '90s/early '00s saw the birth and subsequent boom of a new breed of metal bands. These acts typically weren't as fast as their '80s thrash predecessors or as heavy as the death metal that dominated the late '80s/early '90s, but they were something different. Alternative radio - and even MTV, to a lesser extent readily embraced this new cadre of bands, led by acts such as Staind, Papa Roach, System of a Down, Disturbed, and countless others. Nearly all of these bands have drastically changed their sound over the years (usually adopting a much more radio-friendly approach), but Drowning Pool has consistently remained just as aggressive, if not moreso, as evidenced by their latest release, Hellelujah. The band's sixth album features the hook-laden single "By the Blood" and blistering deep cuts like "We are the Devil" and "Meet the Bullet." News4U recently had the chance to speak with guitarist CJ Pierce during the band's Evansville stop at KC's Time Out Lounge on their "Not-So-Silent Night" tour.

So how’s the tour been going? You have a new record out, Hellelujah... Hellelujah! … which I was listening to today. I’m really impressed with it. Thanks, man. It’s a pretty heavy record. So when did Jason [Moreno, current vocalist] join the band? [counting to himself] It was 2012. I had to count back there for a second. [laughing] We’re actually already working on a new record. With as fast as the music industry is these days, we can’t have these three-year gaps between records. But, I mean, the reason we’ve always had that is a singer switch, or a label switch, or management… there’s always something that kind of hinders that flow. But now that we’ve got Jason, things have been flowing along. His voice really goes along with the evolution of the band.

Yeah, he kills it. Touring during the winter, going from hot to cold, hot to cold, is leaving some of the guys feeling a little funky. But Jason, even on his worst day, still has been sounding great. And he’s gotta perform like three previous guys, plus the stuff he’s written with us! Yeah, that’s gotta be tough on his voice. His voice has gotten a lot deeper and stronger over the years with us. His last band played in standard tuning, whereas we play in Drop C or B [alternate lower-than-usual tunings], so he’s had to adjust to that do. And he’s done a great job, so I gotta commend him on that. You guys have been around forever it seems like. But this new record feels really fresh compared to what a lot of other bands that came from around the same time as you. It was a fun record to make. We kinda did what we wanted to, went a heavier direction, threw more leads on it. Some of your solos are ridiculous on there. Thanks! I’m gonna keep trying to push it going into the next record. I’m drinking more coffee before I go onstage to kinda keep up with myself. [laughs] And you recorded it with Jason Suecof, who’s produced lots of other metal bands in the last decade or so. Where was that at? North of Orlando. We did it at his place. He’s got a home recording studio. Spent a lot of time with him, he’s actually been hitting me up here lately. He’s a big FaceTimer. I hope

to work again with him in the future. We had a lot of fun with him. Between his stuff and my stuff and his friend’s, we had 17 different [amps] that we got to try out, but I just kept going back to the [Marshall] JVM’s, and that’s what I play on the album. I love the tone on that thing. You know, the original Sinner record was done on a Marshall [JCM] 900. So I kinda went back to the one amp, one mic setup. Just a left and right track. With how long you guys have been playing for, is it hard to keep things from feeling repetitive? We try to mix it up. We don’t always have a defined setlist; sometimes Jason will just call a song out, and we’ll go with it. We’re bringing out some songs we haven’t played in awhile, like “Sermon” from Sinner. We actually haven’t played that since Dave [Williams, original Drowning Pool vocalist] passed away. But we’re playing it live with Jason, and everyone goes nuts. Every time we play it, it feels like the first time. Was there anything that really influenced the writing on this record? Yeah, going into it, our management was kind of flaking on it left and right. So at first going into it, it was frustrating. Everybody was kind of getting into it with them. So there’s a little bit of that on this record. But once we broke ties with them - the label and management - we were kind of free to do what we wanted to do, and started getting creative without having to listen to someone in your ear with, “Oh, radio doesn’t do rock that hard!” Well, I’m gonna write what I want. My job is not to get on radio; my job is to write what I feel, and it’s the record company’s job to sell it. So I’m not gonna change my job for your job’s role, so that was something we had to deal with. I’ve always been a firm believer that if you just write what you feel and something that’s genuine, it will find an audience. Exactly. It’ll work. We’ve never been a band to follow any trends. We definitely do what we want. - Jonathan Gluff For more info and tour dates, visit drowningpool.com.

THE DEVIL DON'T SLEEP TOUR FORD CENTER | FEBRUARY 23 | 7 PM

Country music 's multi-platinum outlaw coming to Evansville in support of new album

W

ith four number one singles to his credit, including "Bottoms Up" and "Country Must Be Country Wide," 32-year-old Brantley Gilbert may seem like a hit machine, but in reality, he embraces the outlaw approach of notoriously independent musicians like Steve Earle and John Mellencamp. But make no mistake, the Georgia native knows how to craft a hook. That's been the case since Gilbert first arrived in Nashville almost a decade ago and began performing at local venues before signing to country star Colt Ford's label, Average Joes Entertainment. In 2009, Gilbert released his debut album, Modern Day Prodigal Son, which featured "My Kinda Party," a future chart smash for Jason Aldean. Halfway to Heaven quickly followed in 2010 and was subsequently re-released as a deluxe version in 2011 through Valory Music Co. Second time was the charm; the album spawned two massive hits in "Country Must Be Country Wide" and "You Don't Know Her Like I Do." It also included a very significant co-write. "Dirt Road Anthem," penned with Colt Ford, would go on to be yet another huge hit for Jason Aldean that same year. 2014's Just As I Am cemented Gilbert's place in country music with two more number one singles, "Bottoms Up" and "One Hell of an Amen," plus a top ten hit in "Small Town Throwdown." Most impressively, the album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, proving that this self-described "outsider" has major crossover appeal. Gilbert will arrive in Evansville hot on the heels of The Devil Don't Sleep, the singer's fourth album. Released on January 27, it was preceded by the single "The Weekend." Special guests include Tucker Beathard, Luke Combs and Brian Davis. For tickets and more info, visit thefordcenter.com. The Ford Center is located at 1 SE MLK Jr. Blvd. in downtown Evansville.

Winter Jam 2017 TOUR SPECTACULAR

FORD CENTER MARCH 9TH @ 7PM

New York hip-hop artist Andy Mineo talks tour debut, merging musical styles and more

Y

ear after year, Winter Jam brings together the biggest names in Christian music for a festivallike atmosphere that draws thousands of fans to arenas all across the right half of the U.S. The 2017 tour features such high profile acts as Crowder, Thousand Foot Krutch, Britt Nicole, Tenth Avenue North, NewSong and American Idol's Colton Dixon - plus a Pre-Jam Party with some of the rising stars of the genre. One of the most hotly-anticipated sets will come courtesy of New York's Andy Mineo (formerly known as C-Lite), Winter Jam's sole hip-hop artist. An incredibly diverse and creative rapper, producer and filmmaker, his wildly inventive videos for massive hits like "You Can't Stop Me," "Ayo!" and "Hear My Heart" have racked up north of 10 million YouTube views and counting. You're making your Winter Jam debut on the 2017 tour. Why now? Doing this tour, for me, was more about being able to go and meet new people. This is kind of a new fanbase in some ways. A lot of people aren't familiar with my music in this area, so it's a great chance to stand up in front of a whole lot of people and meet them and also just be able to take the revenues from this tour and invest them into some other places that I've never been able to before - to invest in the next half of my career. Your music merges many different musical styles together. As a result, is it difficult to make a cohesive statement on record? Absolutely. I think my creativity is the best thing about me and the worst. Because when you're as creative as I can be at times, I end up

12 |

getting in my own way. Because one moment I'll want to do a weird 70's psychedelic type song - a singersongwriter song; and then I'll want to do a song that can be played in an NBA stadium just like screaming and metal. But that's part of who I am - I'm an eclectic guy. I grew up in an Italian/white family and went to a high school where I was the only white kid on the basketball team; I live in Washington Heights in a predominantly Dominican/Puerto Rican neighborhood; I married a Latino; my pastor and my best friends don't look like me; my brother turned me on to R&B music and death metal - and I grew up listening to rap. So you get all those things combined into me and you get an appreciation for a lot of styles. When you create a song, are you thinking in visual terms right from the beginning? Typically I create a song with the performance and the video in mind. It's kind of one of the weird ways I create - I'm always thinking about the live show. Because the live show has been my radio - it's my chance to introduce people to my music and have them participate in it as well. That's really been a big thing for me, part of the creative process from ground zero. Considering that your music is so diverse, do you find being labeled a "Christian artist"

February 2017 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

limiting? I don't know - it's interesting. Because, for one, I feel like there are a lot of issues with that label. I mean, I am a Christian and there are a lot of those things going on - but even though it's a helpful identifier for a lot of people that are looking for music that would be inspirational, it is also a hindrance in another way. If you put "Christian" in front of anything, then anyone's who's not a Christian will immediately say, 'that's not for me.' So, it's about clarifying the expectation. I think that's why it's just easier for me not to give that label to myself. But for the people who do see me that way - as a "Christian artist" or whatever you want to call it - I think they are proud because they feel like my music is cool. I can't help what anybody calls me, but I think if my music is helpful for people and they're enjoying it and it encourages them in their relationship with God, then so be it. 15th annual Arc of Evansville benefit promises another awesome night of comedy, music and dance

W

ho knew raising money could be this fun? Since 2002, The Really Big Show has been one of the tri-state's most cherished benefits, a magical night of local entertainment and togetherness in support of Arc of Evansville, a not-for-profit organization with the mission to empower individuals with disabilities to build relationships, gain independence and achieve their full potential. And it's all made possible by the generous individuals who donate their time each year - a nearly all volunteer cast and crew who write, create and produce the show. Per tradition, the 2017 edition - themed The Really Big Luau Show (past themes have included "Las Vegas," "The Tonight Show," "Game Shows," "Saturday Night Live," "Science Fiction" and many others) - will once again be hosted by 14News Chief Meteorologist Jeff Lyons along with Marc Scott. This dynamic duo never fails to bring the funny with hilarious onstage banter; but like the pros they are, they always keep things running smooth despite the challenges of choreographing a live event. Looking back, Lyons is pleasantly surprised by the show's longevity and loves the direction it has taken over the last few years

with the addition of his trusty co-host. "Marc has really helped bring new energy and creativity to the production," he says. "We had worked together at WFIE several years ago. Once his kids were in school, I asked if he'd like to join us on the show and he has been a great addition." And Lyons is particularly pleased by the financial impact it has made on Arc - not to mention the sheer entertainment value. "The event has raised over a million dollars, so I'm proud that something that can be so much fun can also do a whole lot of good," he says. "Not only is it a great forum for our different acts each year, it also is a thrill for our clients to perform on stage." This year's impressive list of local talent (see right) includes The Honey Vines, an acoustic duo featuring Andrea Wirth and Melanie Bozsa. Together, they create beautiful harmonies that recall Indigo Girls with heartfelt, earnest lyrics that bring to mind Joni Mitchell. Always quick to lend a hand to area benefits such as Animalpalooza, The Honey Vines are thrilled to be on the bill for this year's Really Big Show. "It’s a wonderful honor for us to be a part of the event. It’s an opportunity for us and others like us to offer the best of what we have to give to help make a difference, and we treasure these

moments more than anything." The 2017 show will also include appearances by local radio personalities, business executives and organizational heads as well as the Honorable Lloyd Winnecke, Mayor of Evansville. Tickets for the show are $20 for adults and $10 for children age 12 and under. They may be purchased at the Old National Events Plaza Box Office, at ticketmaster.com or by calling 1-800-745-3000. Cirque de la Symphonie LOVE IS IN THE AIR Featuring the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra FEBRUARY 11 & 12 | VICTORY THEATRE A leg up: Aerialist Aloysia Gavre discusses longevity, audience appreciation, the German wheel and more

F

ounded in 1984, Cirque du Soleil re-imagined what a circus could be, creating thematic, animal-free productions that focused on the breathtaking acrobatics of its performers. The beloved and phenomenally successful touring company has since traveled to all parts of the world and spawned various shows, including Quidam, The Beatles Love and Toruk - The First Flight. One of the stars of Quidam, Americanborn aerialist Alyosia Gavre is now a major part of an exciting new production perfectly-timed to put you in the mood for Valentine's Day. Cirque de la Symphonie - Love is in the Air marries high-flying magic and stunning displays of strength and agility with the rush of a live orchestra. Synchronized to music from Titanic, Hook and more, the mindbending movements of the show's world class performers will leave you breathless and full of wonder - maybe even spark a new romance.

16 |

You've been performing professionally for 22 years. What's your secret to longevity? I'm just fortunate that I was exposed to circus training when I was at a young age - that's kind of rare for an American. Now it's becoming more popular and becoming more accessible to the general public. I was eight years old when I took my first circus class. That happens in other countries and abroad. So, I had a leg up. By the time I was 18 I had landed my first job and from then on, it was really my time with Cirque du Soleil that really cemented my injury prevention and injury recovery so that I could have a long career. What are the challenges of performing with a live orchestra? It's very exhilarating and very nerveracking at the same time to be playing with them on the same stage both for spatial

awareness and staging to make sure that everybody feels safe for themselves and also not to distract the orchestra so much, because sometimes they're easily distracted from the excitement that's happening. Also, each orchestra and conductor is going to play it differently, but it's our job as artists to then go and collaborate or adapt. One side will usually adapt more than the other - whichever one takes less time. But that's what makes it fresh and exciting. Do audiences sometimes lose sight of just how difficult the movements are? Yes, they get lost, and we have an awareness of that. Sometimes, doing an easier trick will get a larger response. It's a definite journey for an artist to go through, the emotional state of that.

Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra presents: OUR AMERICAN HERITAGE FEBRUARY 25 VICTORY THEATRE | 7PM

C

irque de la Symphonie is just the first of two amazing EPO performances in February. Maestro Savia and the Orchestra will return to the Classic Series later this month with "Our American Heritage," featuring music that celebrates our customs, culture and history. The patriotic production will include pieces by:

Aloysia Gavre in action For me it always comes back to showmanship. So, if something is so complex that you pull yourself away as a performer and just become a technician, then the audience is not going to come along with you on the ride. Sometimes amping it down but continuing to be present with where you are and where the audience is and the where the musicians are will get you more of a response and understanding. We've been doing this all of our lives so we know how amazing what we're doing is, but often audience members are seeing it for the first time, so it is a little bit like holding a toddler's hand and walking them through this adventure. Are you bringing anything new to Evansville for the performance? I think we're bringing a German wheel to Evansville which is really exciting. That's a bigger sort of apparatus that takes up more stage space. It's kind of like a human-sized hamster wheel. It's a really exhilarating piece that doesn't always fit into each theatre. It's one of those nail-biting pieces, because the performer's rolling in a wheel and he's about to crush his fingers or his toes but he doesn't, and it's all done with his charismatic smile.

In addition to performing, you run Cirque School LA in Los Angeles. Is it difficult to switch gears? Yes! We have 60 classes a week and 18+ staff. It's very important to me to have that balance in my life and not just be a performer, director and choreographer - to really be giving to the next generation and to even inspire adults who are just intrigued by it. I think that in general, circus can be an incredibly empowering thing to experience, even if it's at a recreational level, because it really pushes your body and artistic self to the extreme where you thought you could never go. And I've seen some of our students make life-changing decisions based on how powerful they feel after circus training. But for me, it is incredibly difficult to change mental gears from being a director to being a performer to being a choreographer.

Dudley Buck (Festival Overture on the American National Air) Roy Harris (Symphony No. 3) Howard Hanson (Song of Democracy) Charles Ives/William Schuman (Variations on America) Aaron Copeland (The Tender Land Suite) The Philharmonic Chorus rounds out the program singing words of American poet Walt Whitman in Howard Hanson's Song of Democracy, and they join the Orchestra for The Tender Land Suite. For tickets and more info, visit evansvillephilharmonic.org or call 812-4255050. The Victory Theatre is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville.

*In addition to Gavre, performers include: Sagiv Ben Binyamin, Oleksiy Snarskyy, Autumn Crockett, Armando Munoz, Sarah Sporich and the Acro Duo featuring Vitaliy Prikhodko & Pavel Korshunov.

NEWS4U | VALENTINE'S DAY FEATURE

VAL EN TIN E'S DAY SEC TI O N

L IS FOR LOVE

By: Marisa Patwa

W

hen I was a little girl, I always dreamed about having the perfect Valentine’s Day with a prince charming of my own. I never could settle for getting candy hearts in my cubbies, taped onto a pink piece of cardboard paper that read “Be Mine” or “XOXO”. It just wasn’t enough. Only a fairytale would suffice.

VALEN TIN E'S DAY SECTION

I wanted to be romanced from the sunup to the sundown. I wanted decadent chocolates in a heart shaped box, a bouquet of pink peonies - my favorite flowers - a lavish meal with a string quartet to serenade my prince and I and then a romantic kiss under an explosion of fireworks, lighting up the night sky.

VALE NTINE' S DAY SECT IO N

But now that I’m a new mom, that all seems so silly now. I always used to think of Valentine’s Day as a day to celebrate the romantic love between two interconnected souls but ever since I had my daughter on Nov. 30, I’ve become so enamored with her, that I have realized that I have found an entire new love: the love of a mother for her daughter. I no longer need the validation of an extravagant Valentine’s date with my man, when I can spend that day celebrating the love the three of us have for each other as a family. Sure, it would be nice to go out to dinner with my boyfriend but if we went just the two of us, I am positive I would spend every second missing my sweet Sansa. So for all of you single ones out there already feeling forlorn about your lack of a Valentine’s Day date, know this: romantic love is wonderful but it isn’t everything. It’s not going to complete your life. And just because you may not have that kind of love in your life at the moment, you still have friends and family that love you. Don’t sit in bed drinking an entire bottle of wine, watching Bridget Jones's Diary and feeling sorry for yourself. Don’t spend it pent up about the cute guy who didn’t message you back on Tinder. Go out for drinks with a few of your friends and celebrate the love you have for each other. That is what Valentine’s Day should be about: love with no qualifications or restrictions or mandates. Because no matter what, love is love and you are worth it, I promise. Yes, you are loved.

STOCKWELL INN 4001 E. EICHEL AVE. | EVANSVILLE, IN | 812-476-2384

O

ne would be hard-pressed to find a local without some fond memories of Stockwell Inn. A 30-year-old familyowned and operated business tends to have that effect on patrons. Current owner Audrey Christie recently took over the tavern from her parents, Jerry and Betty Will, after pretty much growing up there. In order to keep the tradition growing, Stockwell now offers family seating so that those who have become parents and grandparents can share the experience with their loved ones. Of course, they have always drawn a variety of demographics, even before minors were allowed. Besides excellent drink specials, an attentive, reliable staff, and singular ambiance, people come for the food - and it keeps them coming back. For starters, they have hearty, comfort-food plate specials every day. Ranging from spaghetti, Salisbury steak, pork chops, fried chicken, pot

roast, meatloaf, sloppy joes, beef tips, and so much more, everything is made from recipes crafted with love. Homemade desserts rotate weekly, and the regular menu features tavern favorites including fried appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, wraps, soups, salads, and a menu for the kiddos. During my visit, I was served the breaded tenderloin, fried to golden perfection, served with chips, pickle, lettuce, tomato, and mayo, and their famous appetizer of Hot Chips. Both chewy and crunchy, the Chips are seasoned perfectly and served with either hot or mild melted cheese. And for the adventurous foodies, Stockwell is known for their Brain Sandwich. They also know how to celebrate, hosting a variety of themed celebrations throughout the year, with Mardi Gras drawing the largest crowd. The festivities this year begin on Thursday, February 23 and wrap up on Fat Tuesday. Enjoy

Cajun cuisine such as fresh crawfish and potato, corn, and sausage sides, fried gator, squid fries, oysters, red beans and rice, jambalaya, gumbo, drunken chicken, po boys, white chocolate bread pudding, and New Orleans' favorite libation - the Hurricane. Patrons of Stockwell can also rest assured that supporting the restaurant gives back to the community. For example, they often collaborate with It Takes a Village No-Kill Canine Rescue, located right next door. Great food, friendly faces, a full bar, catering, and community partnership are all solid reasons to check it out for yourself or revisit if it's been a while - they'd love to have you! - Whitney Patterson Hours: Mon-Fri open at 11 a.m./ Sat open at 4 p.m./ Closed Sun/ Now Accepting Credit Cards. NEWS4U | WKY WHAT'S COOKIN'

3523 HWY 54 E. | OWENSBORO, KY | 270-926-6464

O

le South Bar-B-Q has been serving up amazing eats since 1995. Current owner Greg Floyd takes great pride in the restaurant and keeping the brand alive with fresh, homemade recipes and a hearty side of hospitality. There's a lot to be proud of - with a booming catering business and a loyal customer base, Ole South is a tried-and-true staple of western Kentucky and the tri-state. But what sets them apart from other BBQ joints? Breakfast, available to-order or from the buffet, is offered seven days a week starting at 6 a.m. From platters and sandwiches to pancakes and French toast, biscuits and gravy and build-your-own omelets, no one's leaving hungry. As someone who can never say no to breakfast, I'll be returning to check it out for myself. On my maiden voyage, I stopped in for lunch and was seriously impressed. Again, one can order from the menu, but I opted for the buffet. The salad bar alone was a meal, with mixed greens, fresh veggies, homemade croutons and bacon bits, and three soups that are always on offer: burgoo, chili, and white bean with smoked chicken. I didn't make it to the soup, unfortunately, because I loaded up on tender, juicy pulled pork, crispy fried chicken, cooked cabbage, corn bread, BBQ baked beans, baked apples, mashed potatoes, and green beans. In an attempt to leave no stone unturned, I also had to try the mac and cheese - which was well worth it - and some tangy meatloaf.

Finally, in my opinion, it's not a true buffet experience without dessert, so I gave the cherry cobbler topped with vanilla soft-serve a valiant effort. Let's just say that at this establishment, one can definitely get their money's worth, and they offer the most vegetarian options of any BBQ place I've ever visited. Dinner starts at 4 p.m. with additional items, and on Saturdays and Sundays, fish and ribs are available as well. If opting to order from the menu, they have plates, sandwiches, burgers, nachos, a kids' menu, and more. If you can't eat in, get it to-go, even the buffet which is sold by weight. And if you're looking for someone to take care of the cooking for a party, job site, graduation, etc., Ole South has incredibly reasonable catering, and they'll even smoke and slice your own meat for a small fee. They're no average restaurant, and the proof is in the pudding... the bread pudding, that is. - Whitney Patterson Hours: Mon-Thurs 6 a.m.-8 p.m./ Fri-Sat 6 a.m.-9 p.m./ Sun 6 a.m.-2 p.m. For more info, visit olesouthbbq. com.

T

he IBMM Saturday Lesson Program is gearing up again, giving area bluegrass fans a chance to improve their playing skills on a range of acoustic instruments or small percussion. Beginning Saturday, February 4 and extending through the end of June, students will meet bi-monthly for three different levels of classes taught by professional musicians and teachers - all at a significantly discounted rate thanks to grants from the Michael E. Horn Family Foundation and the Lester E. Yeager Charitable Trust. In addition, instruments are provided on loan as part of the program, and the students can take them home as long as they're enrolled in the lesson program.

Classes offered include: Beginners - This class is designed for the beginner student. Instruments include: Guitar, Fiddle, Banjo & Mandolin. Intermediate - Beginner students that have completed two semesters and are ready to expand upon the skills learned. Jam Band - This class is for musicians and singers and will teach you how to play with others as the group learns songs together. You will learn how to arrange the song, pick the best key for the song, play along with different instruments and singers, and perform together at a local nursing home. We hope this experience will create relationships, spur bands to form, and make more music in our area and beyond. The styles covered will be bluegrass, country, rock, and folk. Please keep in mind that you must have basic playing knowledge of your instrument or singing. The IBMM Saturday Lesson Program culminates with a June 24th ROMP performance by the students! Don't miss your chance to sign up - become a better player today! * And don't forget that the IBMM Spring 2017 Benefit Concert Series is just around the corner with another incredible lineup of regional and national bluegrass acts scheduled to perform. For more details, visit bluegrassmuseum.org. Registrations for the Saturday Lesson Program are now open. The IBMM is located at 117 Daviess St. in Owensboro.

Bringing country back: Area's newest cover band attracting loyal fans with return to the old days Photos by: Anomalist Studios

T

alk about diving right in. Tailgate Revival singer Blake Billman had no frontman experience to speak of before taking the reins of the tri-state's hottest new band. Not unless you count his occasional karaoke nights around town - fueled by a few drinks, of course. But standing on stage before a packed bar full of "impress me" patrons is something else entirely. So, you have to take your hat off to how quickly Billman has adjusted to the pressure. Your cowboy hat, that is. Yes, Tailgate Revival is a country cover band, a rarity around these parts - something that really perplexes Billman, a lifelong fan of the genre. "Every time a there's a country band at the Ford Center, it sells out," he says. "It was driving me crazy that I'm such a fan, but when I go out to the bars, it's just not the music that I want to hear." So he took matters into his own hands last September and went to work putting together a solid group of players from around the area, including Brad Lemmons, a successful solo act in his own right. The singer/ songwriter from Haubstadt agreed to pitch in for a bit to help get Tailgate Revival off the ground. Local guitar phenom Curt Leek, multi-talented bassist Jared MajorsManley and ace drummer Nick Davis rounded things out, and after just a few practices, the band debuted at Piston's Bar & Grill on a busy Saturday night. And while they

52 |

were all nervous going in, Billman in particular was having second thoughts. "I was like, 'This ain't happening' but it went as well as it possibly could," he says. "Afterwards I knew that we could do better than just play once a week at the bars." That first gig summed up the musical spirit of Tailgate Revival, featuring a range of country music from the 90's to today by the likes of George Strait, Blake Shelton and Jason Aldean - with a little altrock thrown in for good measure. For Billman, it was important to take the path less traveled. "We didn't want to be the cliched country band - we wanted to bring out some songs that maybe weren't number ones, but they were top five, and you go, 'Hey, I forgot about that song - it's really good,'" he explains. As planned, Lemmons left the band soon after and was very capably replaced by another gifted local musician, Shane Espenlaub, who took over some of the vocal duties. More well-attended shows at places like KC's Corner Pocket and Backstage Bar & Grill followed as well as Tailgate Revival's first mini-tour outside of Evansville. The road trip saw the guys play four shows in three days - including stops in Greensburg and Osgood, IN (Billman's hometown) - before returning to Piston's to kick off the Fall Festival. What's been remarkable during the band's short existence is the number of loyal fans they've attracted - many of which have made it to every show. Not surprisingly, bar owners are taking notice. "We've only been playing for five months just getting started, really - but people are starting to call us rather than us having to keep requesting

February 2017 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

shows," Billman says. "We started out excited and now we're getting even more excited, because a new place will call or a festival might call." The next step for Tailgate Revival is to expand their set list and work on some original material. On the horizon, shows are scheduled at the Uniontown VFW, Hawg-N-Sauce in Mt. Vernon and the Eagles Club in Princeton. And the guys hope to do more charity work with organizations like 911 Gives Hope who they teamed up with for a very successful toy drive during the holidays. Billman was humbled by the response and is truly grateful for the support the band has received so far. "I'd really love to give a shout-out to all the people that have helped us out - to all the bars where we've played. It's been really neat." For more info, follow Tailgate Revival on Facebook.

PSYCHOETRY On the move: Local underground rapper looking to blow-up with World War P

M

ichael Chivalier has moved around a lot during his 27 years. A whole lot. Originally from the Evansville/ Boonville area, the local underground rapper attended numerous schools throughout his childhood and teenage years, shuttling back and forth between here and Illinois. Why the constant upheaval? "My mom and stepdad were always wanting to pick and up leave wherever we were staying," he explains. "After moving to Marshall, IL I eventually came back down to Boonville to live with my grandma when I was 16. Then I returned to Evansville and went to Harrison High School for about two weeks." The short stay was a result of harassment Chivalier suffered at the hands of a fellow student, followed by an unwarranted suspension. Not long after, he gave up on school for good. Since then, he's continued his transient ways but currently resides on Evansville's south side, pursuing the hip-hop dream under the name Psychoetry. In fact, rap music has been the one

constant, the one thing that has kept him grounded throughout his troubled life. "I got into rap around the age of 12, artists like Tupac, Wu Tang and D-12 - they're my biggest influence," Chivalier says. "I just rap about things going on in my life. It's a great outlet, because a lot of people say I have anger problems, and I try to vent through my music - writing helps me the most." Indeed, he spent much of his class time coming up with rhymes rather than concentrating on schoolwork. But Chivalier did excel in one very important area: English Literature. And as his confidence grew, he began sharing his raps with friends, slowly but surely making progress. By early 2008, initial demos were being recorded at home - raw for sure, but full of potential. "I started simply with a crappy mic and the Audacity software program," Chivalier explains. "But here recently, my friend Thomas Basham (aka Iced Gemini) and I have been trying to start our own label called Rags 2 Rhymes - he's getting the whole studio setup built." But let's rewind. Chivalier continued to record and occasionally perform live, until his big break came in July

of 2014 via Strange Music, the number one independent hip-hop label in the world. CES Cru, a popular act on the roster, had a show scheduled in Detroit and somewhat miraculously, Psychoetry scored an opening slot. "Considering who I grew up listening to, it was a dream come true," Chivalier says, still amazed at his good fortune. "I didn't know how people would take me - it was the biggest show I'd done up to that point. My stage presence was definitely awful, but they loved me - the crowd went nuts." Then the icing on the cake. As Chivalier left the stage, a cameraman walked up and asked to put him on TV. It was a moment that made up for so many past frustrations. Now Chivalier is preparing for the next big step - the first full-length Psychoetry album. Building on his most accomplished demos to date, "Videotape" and "Drive," he and Basham recently knocked out 17 new tracks with an improved sonic sheen and more positive lyrical approach. Anger still seeps in from time to time, but the general theme is "follow your dreams and don't give up." What's sure to raise a few eyebrows, however, is the cover artwork which features an atom bomb spewing into the Evansville skyline. But according to Chivalier, it's not as sinister as it sounds. "Some people are probably going to get offended by that - but there's a reason for it. It's supposed to symbolize me trying to blow up; it's just a way of saying, 'I'm here to make my mark.'" World War P will be available to purchase soon at AbyssCo in Evansville. For more info, visit facebook.com/therealpsychoetry, facebook. com/Rags2RhymesEnt and youtube.com/ therealpsychoetry.

MELISSA ERWIN Full circle: Former Evansville artist looking to call the Lone Star State home - for good

A

nother supremely gifted artist has left the area for the promise of a bigger city. Well, that's a little misleading. The full story is that 37-year-old Melissa Erwin recently moved back to Austin, TX - this time for good. Originally from Mt. Vernon, she settled in Evansville but spent quite a bit of time on the road the last few years, bouncing back and forth between here and the Texas state capital. But now Erwin and her boyfriend are staying put, eager to find their way into that city's burgeoning artistic community. And to feel accepted. "The weather and the scenery drew me here - but I really like the fact that whenever I go somewhere out in public, I'm not the weirdest person," she says with no trace of sarcasm. Indeed, the local slogan is "Keep Austin Weird" - a sentiment that attracts all sorts of creative types just like Erwin and makes for a very

3

diverse environment. Artistic from a very early age, Erwin continued to draw through her high school years, particularly influenced by comic books. Her interest in the medium eventually served as the catalyst for her first trip to Austin in 2004. "I self-published comics for a while and put them in local comic shops in Evansville," she explains. "But I also traveled to comic conventions and that's where I met some of my close friends in Texas. It's kind of come around full circle to where I'm back down here with them." Erwin's self-published works include a mini-series about a serial killer based in 1970's Evansville as well as a comic she refers to as "The Sopranos meets Seven Samurai." But perhaps her most accomplished work is Sakura & The Spider, a graphic novel funded by an individual grant she won

from the Indiana Arts Commission in 2008; the title would go on to become the umbrella under which Erwin brands her art - though she grew weary of the self-promotion aspect of it all. "I published a second one in 2011, but I got tired of using up all of my vacation days going to comic conventions and constantly having to push that - which is funny because I wound up having to do that anyway with the Arts Council of Doom," she says. A locally-based group of unconventional artists, the Arts Council of Doom was a perfect fit for Erwin and she quickly became involved in coordinating and organizing events. This new responsibility coincided with her move away from comics and towards painting and illustration; it was also around this time that she graduated from USI with a degree in graphic design. But Erwin wasn't in need of a job post-college. For years, she'd been working for Memory Portraits, a local company that specializes in photo restoration and manipulation - primarily to create memorials for the

recently-deceased. "I mostly worked in Photoshop and learned how to work with layers to get the visual I wanted," she explains. "I had to do things quickly and it taught me to be more efficient, to prioritize."

Erwin has used all of her artistic endeavors and experiences to develop an arresting style that is both dark and thoughtprovoking, and the loss of her talent will leave a big hole in the Evansville arts community. But we certainly wish her well in Austin - especially as she and her boyfriend attempt to get VintaGoGo off the ground there. Erwin started the custom sign company about a year ago, doing work for the likes of Gerst Haus, Bazooka Tattoo and The Elm Consignment Shop in Henderson. Now it just may be the gateway to a new life. Although it's tempting to call Brantley Gilbert a country artist - with #1 hits like "Bottoms Up," and hit singles like "Small Town Throwdown" and "One Hell of an Amen" he certainly embraces the outlaw country side of things - in many ways his music is closer to the heartland sentiments of artists like John Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen, and perhaps most apt, Steve Earle. Gilbert blends country music with the swaggering sounds of Southern rock creating a hard-stomping country/rock/soul mixture that's hard to forget. Sugar can be nervous in new situations, but warms up with affection and gets more confident. She is laid-back, but usually livens up when there are other dogs for her to play with. She is gentle and would likely be fine with respectful children who aren’t so boisterous that they scare her. Sugar’s adoption fee is $100. She’s already spayed, microchipped, up-to-date on vaccinations, and ready to go home today! Athena - Athena is the goddess of wisdom, royal through and through, and she knows it. This prissy princess lives in the Cageless Cat Lounge at VHS and gets along just fine with other animals. She was originally adopted from VHS, but returned just before Christmas when her owner ran into personal problems. She’s 2 ½ years old. Athena is already spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, and FeLV/ FIV-negative. Take this gorgeous dilute calico home TODAY for only $30!

Kerouac - Kerouac has had a sad, unstable beginning in life. Originally he came to Evansville Animal Care & Control as part of a litter. VHS pulled the whole litter when we had some extra space, and named them after artists. Fast forward a few months, and we arrive at the Empty the Shelter Adopt-a-Thon. Kerouac was the LAST remaining adoptable animal in the ENTIRE shelter who didn’t get adopted. Poor guy! It may be because he’s albino and has the signature pink eyes, which freaks some people out. But he’s the sweetest bunny you’ll ever find. Kerouac is a 2-yearold male New Zealand rabbit, and he’s already neutered and ready to go to his new indooronly home. Adopt him for only $30!

ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT

KERSTIN & LUNA On the day that we spoke with Carmi, IL resident Kerstin Herr, she had just adopted and picked up Luna (formerly "Alex") from the VHS. This impossibly cute bundle of fur caught Herr's eye while she was surfing the shelter's website. "I saw her picture and that's what drew me to her - I just knew," she says. Having previously adopted a male rabbit back in October - as well as a bird before that - Herr just figured it was time to add to her little family that hangs out together in the upstairs of her home. "The bird and rabbits have a whole room to themselves with lots of toys - but it's also sort of my art room where I paint and sketch," she explains. Everyone is getting along great so far - Luna was a little nervous at first but has since calmed down and seems to be adjusting well to her new surroundings. Another successful VHS adoption!

WRITE STUFF

Q:

What does the Bible say about tattoos?

with Jonathan Gluff

(In the spirit of full transparency, the writer discloses that he has a tattoo depicting the Trinity on his right calf.) "My mom said the bible says not to get tattoos...is that true?" "'Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD.” – Leviticus 19:28. If you are a literalist, your momma is right. By the same token, you won’t be doing a lot of the things you are currently doing, like eating the things you are currently eating, planting your fields in the way you are currently planting your fields, or doing much of anything on Saturdays (or Sundays). The admonition in Leviticus is really about practicing other religious traditions than the ones being practiced by ancient Israel. It was a call to faithfulness, of being unique, of honoring one’s connection to God. Literalism, and its sibling legalism, strive to accomplish many things, not the least of which is control, dividing people from one another, the establishment of fear, and the promotion guilt. In contrast, the idea of “grace” (yes, the amazing one in that song with the bagpipes) asks us to live lives of forgiveness, compassion, understanding, and acceptance. We live that way because that is the way God reaches out to us. Honor your mother. Assure her that your tattoo will be safe and clean and not terribly offensive. Tell her you aren’t having it put somewhere embarrassing on your body. And then, put her kind heart at ease and go to church with her. How to Get Better Service (Or Maybe You're the Problem) I recently joined a smaller company after 11+ years in what I lovingly call “retail hell.” (In case the sarcasm doesn’t translate into text, trust that it was intended.) Working for Big Box retail stores certainly isn’t fun; between the corporate workers pumping out myriad hands-tying regulations and procedures coupled with management who often are wildly inconsistent/hypocritical and shareholders who contradictorily want to magically increase sales while simultaneously cutting jobs/wages, you can begin to see why many workers may be slightly bitter. Make no mistake - I’m not here to make excuses for bad workers. I myself have confronted coworkers who were giving bad customer service, because just like there is no excuse for customers being rude, an employee has no reason to do so either. But also keep in mind that not everyone in a Big Box store is an expert; there’s a reason why prices are lower and churn is high. The kid in Hardware probably doesn’t know the difference between Pex, PVC, and CPVC over in the Plumbing department. If you ever feel you’ve been screwed over by a retail store, let me tell you right now that no one is out to take advantage of you. If you’re trying to return something and they’re having difficulty, there’s a reason. Since so few places pay commission, they have exactly zero incentive to not happily process your return. If they’re struggling/are unable to do so, usually it’s because it’s long past the return policy date, parts are missing, or there’s no receipt. (Who’d’ve thunk you can’t return something without a receipt?) If they could snap their fingers and get you out of there, they would. Trust me - all being rude does is make them want to help you less. If there’s a point to take away from my diatribe, it’s this: If you truly want to make America great again by making more jobs/better wages, do your part. If you’re going to shop a Big Box store, understand that most employees are miserable enough without getting yelled at because someone wants to return a Shop Vac purchased 6 years ago. Or spend a little more at a smaller, locally-owned store where you may find better service while supporting a company who typically cares about their employees more. Either way, ask yourself: How can I be a better customer? You may be surprised at the result.

WORDS

FROM

WHITNEY by Whitney Patterson

TRI-STATE POLITICS with Bryan Fox

The golden rule is great, but the silver rule is more proactive In the wake of the recent tragedy concerning high school student Roman Kellough, there has been a rash of finger-pointing, anger, and grief. His suicide has gotten a lot of social media attention, speculation about the reasons behind his choices, and what could have been done to prevent his death. One thing is certain - bullying is real. The conversation needs to be had, and it needs to be addressed across the board. From my understanding, a large part of Roman's bullying happened because of his sexual orientation, a small and intangible part of his life that had zero effect on those around him. Why can we not, as a society, grasp that? It's simple - you don't have to agree with someone to be kind and show compassion. If it's not hurting anyone, why does it matter? And of course, this starts at home. Parents have a responsibility to teach their children tolerance and to stand up for themselves and others. Do the right thing, even if you're the only one. The golden rule is great, but the silver rule is more proactive - basically don't treat people the way you wouldn't want to be treated. Schools and faculties have a responsibility as well. Zero tolerance policies don't work if they're not enforced. Math and science are necessary, but teachers have the opportunity to change lives in more ways outside of the curriculum. I once witnessed a grade school teacher display the effects of bullying versus compassion with buckets of sand. I could actually see the recognition in their young faces - it was a beautiful thing to watch, and took about 20 minutes. Every individual has the ability to either crush a spirit or build it up. Why not do the latter? It's so much easier. Roman made three choices that day, and in a final act of kindness, chose not to take the lives of those who made him feel like his own didn't matter. While our hearts go out to his family and friends, his death doesn't have to be in vain. Imagine for a moment that he was your son, brother or cousin and let those around you know how much they mean to you. Practice random acts of kindness for strangers - it's contagious.

Gerrymandering and Evansville's West Side Gerrymandering has been wreaking havoc on our democratic elections for over two centuries. Essentially, gerrymandering is when one of our political parties manipulates boundaries within a particular region to favor one side or the other. This is usually done after the census every 10 years and it typically only affects congressional districts at the federal level and house and senate seats at the state level. Whichever party has control of the state will get to dictate how the district lines are drawn for the next 10 years. Indiana is no stranger to gerrymandering. One only needs to look at state house district 76 for proof. This district currently includes Posey County and western/central Vanderburgh County. Its representative is Republican Wendy McNamara. During her first run for this seat in 2010, she won this district by a mere eight votes. During her last re-election bid in 2016, she ran unopposed. How could she have gone from a squeaker in 2010 to running unopposed in 2016? Gerrymandering. Prior to the 2010 census, the district represented all of Posey County, western Vanderburgh County, and a small part of Gibson. After redistricting was done in 2010, Vanderburgh County gained over 6,000 voters if you compare the 2008 and 2012 elections as the district moved more east and became more Republican. As you can see, gerrymandering has even affected tri-state voters.

Signed, Whitney Patterson, a survivor of bullying Someone is always there to listen. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255

NEWS4U | MOVIE REVIEWS

MOVIE R EVIEWS Barry (Unrated) Netflix

Barry is not so much a story about our last President as it is a statement on the human condition; striving to define ourselves while also looking for a place of sincere belonging. Not a biography, it is a thought-provoking narrative following an idealized young Barack Obama through a portion of his college experience. To get the main issue with this film out of the way, our main character feels a little bit too good to be true. Too intelligent, too good-natured, and too altruistic to be believable. In some ways you feel detached from his dilemmas because of this. Other times, you get a real sense that he is running from something that’s deeply bothering him. Barry only once refers to himself as “Barack” during the course of the story. You can tell this is a meaningful moment of healing for him, but too much is still left open by the climax, and it just falls a little flat. The movie asks a lot of important questions, resolves the drama, but never truly answers the questions. There is pseudo-elegance to its pseudo-direction, though. Give this one a watch if you have a moment for pondering. - Laura Engram

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (PG-13) Lucasfilm

As the special editions of the original Star Wars movies came out, when I was a child, I remember being so excited and brimming with anticipation for each successive movie. I just felt this overwhelming need to know what happens next. When the prequels came out, I wasn’t that much older. However, even though I didn’t see all the flaws then, I knew I was nowhere near as consumed by love and anticipation as I had been with the originals. None of them made me so excited for what happens next. I can honestly that say Rogue One, though a separate story, is the first Star Wars movie of the past few decades that got me truly excited for what happens next. It made me want to go home and watch A New Hope - a movie I’ve seen too many times to care anymore - all over again. Sure, there are some flaws. There are possibly too many locations to follow. Slowly getting invested in the characters takes up nearly the whole the movie. But, once you get invested, you’re really invested. The space battles hail to the classics: Fun, yet intimate. And the climax is one you just cannot miss. - Laura Engram

NEWS4U | MUSIC REVIEWS Highly Suspect The Boy Who Died Wolf 300 Entertainment

Run the Jewels Run the Jewels 3 Run the Jewels, Inc.

“My Name Is Human” may be the best alternative song of the previous year. With the opening song of their second studio album, Highly Suspect is giving notice and gaining traction in the rock scene. Considering this, and even despite the stupid name, The Boy Who Died Wolf isn’t too disappointing.

Every now and then, a musical team-up manages to be bigger than the sum of its already-successful parts. El-P - an already successful underground hip-hop label owner, artist, and producer - teaming up with Killer Mike - himself already successful through appearances with OutKast - is one such instance. The duo’s third effort - the appropriately-titled Run the Jewels 3 - finds them trying to follow a sophomore LP that rightly topped many “Best Of” lists in 2014. And to my surprise, I dare say they succeed.

The album delivers an intriguing range of songs, and although none of these offers the same level smoky-mellow notes of skepticism that “My Name Is Human” crunches out, there are other impressive offerings. In “Serotonia” the guitars burn a heavy and dark melody in harmony with bit of existential honesty. Groaning, deliberate songs like this and “Send me an Angel” are where Highly Suspect shines. Unfortunately, there are songs like “Look Alive, Stay Alive," “For Billy," and “Chicago” which all feel like strange, 90's pop rock throwbacks.

Run the Jewels have a perennially winning formula. It’s a rare combination of great production, beats that can please the most mainstream of hip-hop fans or the pickiest hipster, and consistently clever wordplay. Killer Mike has continued to evolve with each album, both in lyrical content and delivery. The speed, rhythm, and flow in one of his verses on “Hey Kids! (Bumaye)” would make Busta Rhymes nod in approval, and unlike many rappers today, he always has something worth saying.

Lead vocalist Johnny Stevens has such a unique singing voice, a playful, grindingly soulful mix between Randy Newman and Chris Cornell (Audioslave). It’s obvious in the song “Chicago," but the variety in singing style and range works especially well in the final track, “Wolf." Give it a listen. - Laura Engram

Third Eye Blind We are Drugs Mega Collider Records Remember that sprightly little song every 90's kid loves? “I want something else to get me through this semi-charmed kind of” record? Yeah. That’s exactly how I felt listening to this band’s latest album. I had such a hard time coming up with something interesting to say. That’s how bland it is. As “The Queen of Daydreams” so eloquently asks, “In your heart, can you feel it?” No. The best thing I can say about Third Eye Blind’s We Are Drugs, is that there doesn’t seem to be any permanent side effects to those drugs, thank odds. Ok, that may not be exactly fair. The tracks “Company of Strangers” and “Sherri is a Stoner” aren’t too bad. They are forgettable though, and while there is a bit of variety in the tracks on the album, it’s not executed very well. Despite the poppy sound, lively strumming, and technotronic accents, there isn’t anything catchy about it. “Isn’t It Pretty” is the perfect example. It has an interesting electronic backdrop, but it never progresses into anything more memorable, and the lyrics are obtuse. It feels pointless. - Laura Engram

Being a big El-P fan years before RTJ, I don’t mean to downplay his contribution. His production, lyrics, and flow are just as solid as ever. It’s clear they push each other to continually hone their already seemingly-mastered craft. I cannot say enough good things about this album. If you like hip-hop in any capacity, you owe it to yourself to check it out. - Jonathan Gluff

Dropkick Murphys 11 Short Stories of Pain & Glory Born & Bred Records On paper, it seems like I should like Dropkick Murphys. I’m of Irish descent, like to drink, support the working class, and love punk, but I’ve never been able to get into them. This album further cements my position. Like every DM album, there are lots of handclaps, Celtic instrumentation, and gang vocals… and that’s just on the opening song (which sounds eerily like the music from Cosmo Canyon in Final Fantasy VII, but I digress). In fact, with seemingly the entire band singing along the entire album, why even bother designating a lead singer? If I had to use one word to describe this album, it would be “uninspired.” The banality of the lyrics to “Rebels With a Cause” match the banality of its title, and successive tracks like “Blood,” “Sandlot,” and “Kicked to the Curb” beat lyrical dead horses. And try as it might, the boom-boom-clap of “Paying My Way” can’t make it the Celtic punk “We Will Rock You.” Either the Murphys are mellowing out a tad with age or their collaboration with Springsteen rubbed off on them. Whatever the case, 11 Short Stories of Pain & Glory sounds more E Street Band than Green Street Hooligans, losing their punk energy (their one redeeming quality, in my opinion). No offense to The Boss, but that may even put off the staunchest of fans. - Jonathan Gluff

NEWS4U | MUSIC REVIEWS Brian Eno Reflection Warp Records Being as beloved (and rightly so) figure in music as Brian Eno is, I have to start this review with two disclaimers: 1) I recognize he has made great contributions, both through solo albums such as Here Come the Warm Jets and his work with the massively influential Roxy Music. But Reflection’s one 54-minute song truly seemed to drag on. I found myself unconsciously blocking out the loosely related melodies (and I’m being generous saying “loosely”) for the most part after a while, and that’s coming from someone who has enjoyed numerous albums that contain only one hour-long song. 2) My score reflects that I feel neutral about this album. There is a time and a place for ambient music and perhaps it just never happened to be that time or that place while I listened to this album. But the combination of warbling and chiming synths with what I can only describe as sound effects inspired by both nature calls and The X-Files theme song simply did not appeal to me. I feel it would work well as a score to a TV show/movie/visual presentation/etc., but the seeming lack of direction made it incredibly hard for me to enjoy it on its own. There are plenty of both Brian Eno albums and non-lyrical albums I love; sadly, this is not one. - Jonathan Gluff

Ramshackle Glory One Last Big Job Get Better Records

I was a big fan of the late-’00s folk punk scene. Wingnut Dishwashers Union was always one of my favorite lesser known acts, led by the slightlyunhinged Pat the Bunny (neé Pat Schneeweis). While it’s sad to see his latest project disband, it’s nice to see Ramshackle Glory go out on a high note. The album opens with a shuffling, skittering rhythm that recalls the heyday of PlanIt-X Records. Contrast is key here: Accordions, Melodicas, and banjo are juxtaposed with overdriven guitar and punked-up drumbeats. Raucous rave-ups (“Collapse, Fury, Redemption, Loss,” “Die Alone, Live Together [Born to Lose]”) share space with swaggering ballads (“Broken Heart,”“Into the Wind”). Despite sharing similarities to genre peers, Pat isn’t afraid to buck trends. While he (rightly) mocks the imaginary “War on Christmas” with a song of the same title, he also posits “Religion is fine/I just hate Christmas.” “Face the Void” calls out the contradictory nature of punk slacktivism: “I’ll take action today/I’ll take the trash out tomorrow… Now let me tell you/How the economy will be run.” It’s rare someone in this genre admits it’s hard to be taken seriously when you can’t handle trivial responsibilities. Whether you’re nostalgic for bands like This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb or just curious about anarcho-punk with the volume turned down, One Last Big Job won’t disappoint. - Jonathan Gluff

Dropkick Murphys 11 Stories of Pain & Glory Born & Bred Records The tin whistle peacefully welcoming you to the Boston Irish ruckus of 11 Stories of Pain & Glory feels like coming home. It is heartening to know that the Dropkick Murphys and their solid songs for working class heroes are a dependable fixture of the scene. This album seems to be their best produced and most serious, but the traditional bagpipes and mandolin still play lead to snarling, shouting harshness that is just as wry as ever. While drinking songs like “First Class Loser” and “I Had a Hat” pepper the album with bits of raucous jeering and fun, anthems like “Blood” and “Sandlot” offer serious criticisms mixed with fond memories of the past and concerns about the future. The clapping and stomping of “Paying My Way” is a piano-accented chantey about growth and winning against the odds. Yet most somber, the tin whistle again whispers, between mandolin strums, as “4-15-13” memorializes the Boston Marathon Bombing. Those last three songs - ending with “Until the Next Time” - showcase the Dropkick Murphys' true uniqueness: fostering an infectious sense of community amid the howling of street punk. - Laura Engram

The Pretty Reckless Who You Selling For Razor & Tie As a fan, I’ve been waiting to see where The Pretty Reckless was headed with their sound, as well as lead vocalist Taylor Momsen with her singing career. Expanding, yet staying true to their roots, Who You Selling For conceals an extensive nod to classic rock within its blustery metal prowess. Momsen’s impressive vocal contributions range from grungy whispers and moans to the emotive throws of soul. On this third studio album they mature in their composition and variety of influences. The opening track, “The Walls Are Closing In," reminds me of a seething amalgamation of Velvet Revolver and Alice In Chains. The guitar solos, not only on this track, but throughout the entire album, are a soaring, resounding mixture of technical skill and creativity. There really isn’t a boring song on the entire album. “Take Me Down,” the first single, is about the conflict struck between your sense of self and your life’s ambitions. “Mad Love” and “Wild City” are both jazzy showcases of Momsen’s talents, but the rounded ripping guitar in the latter will simply blow you away. This album’s worth your time. - Laura Engram

NEWS4U | BEER REVIEWS GOOSE ISLAND PRESEASON LAGER

Daniel Knight • 3.75 I have to admit, lagers aren’t my favorite genre of beer. But I started reading the six pack carrier and saw that this one's made with some special Idaho origin “Elk Mountain Farm” hops… more than the usual lager. It pours up a perfectly clear dark copper color with a lovely head. Its nose is subtle as is the case with most of the beers of this style, and accompanying the malt there is a light piney hop aroma. Different. The taste, due to the subtle hops, actually reminds me of a traditional American ale. Not a bad thing. Its flavor displays a pleasant balance of malt and hops with a maltiness that most certainly comes from the lager side of things. Overall, I like this one and imagine that the fans will respond favorably.

DOGFISH HEAD BEER FOR BREAKFAST STOUT

Daniel Knight • 4.5 This is a big beer experience. It’s a “right on the edge of” Russian imperial stout. It pours up very dark brown with a dense light brown half finger head that sticks around and leaves plenty of lacing. The nose is dominated by coffee, roasted malt, and a smokiness that is said to come from Scrapple, a regional (Pennsylvania Dutch) dish made from a mush of pork scraps and trimmings that is a part of the brews recipe. The taste reflects the Scrapple influence as well with a hard-to-pin-point sort of slickness to its mouthfeel. There’s a bit of lactose sweetness there as well. If you’re into this type of brew or you’re just ready for a walk on the wild side then you've got to check this one out.

Paul Bragin • 4.5 A nice white head forms on this amber/coppercolored beer after pouring it into a traditional beer mug. A moderate amount of pine and citrus hop scents fill the nose. Malt flavors take over with the first sip of the beer, but after waiting for a moment, the hop notes return in the finish. This beer could see widespread appeal for people who like lagers as well as hopheads who tend to favor India Pale Ales.

Paul Bragin • 3.75 A thick tan head tops this opaque stout after pouring it into an English pub glass and never completely disappears. The scent profile contains a nice combination of sweet malt notes and roasted malt notes. The roasted malt stays on the tongue during the first tasting, as well as maple and spice notes. The roasted malt seems to intensify during the finish. Enjoy it with hearty breakfast foods, steak, aged Gouda or crème brulee.

Jabez Martinez • 3 This is a clear amber beer. It has a hint of pine and a little extra hops flavor. I consider this an average beer in the lager family - sort of disappointing as the Goose Island family goes. They usually bring a little more flavor or originality but this one is just ok.

Jabez Martinez • 5 This is a thick black beer with a creamy chocolate head. I love the rich coffee and chocolate flavors. I believe this is my new favorite beer. This is close to an imperial stout (also a favorite) but just a notch below. It also has a 7.4% ABV which makes this beer awesome.

UNIBROUE A TOUT LE MONDE - MEGADETH

Daniel Knight • 3.75 A Canadian Saison / Farmhouse Ale with the “Megadeth” (a rock band) name on the label. This one pours up a cloudy straw color with an airy two finger head. Its aroma is of mild floral hops, yeasty notes and sweet malt notes. Pleasant. Its flavor includes a mix of floral hoppy notes with some yeasty ester and Belgian malt. It displays a lively carbonation. It’s an easy drinking saison with an undeniable Belgian twist. Give it a go. Paul Bragin • 3.75 A substantial white head crowns a cloudy golden ale when poured into a tulip glass. Fruity aromas dominate the scent profile. More fruit flavors come to the forefront while drinking the beer and stay during the finish before mellowing. This beer boasts a lower ABV and lighter mouthfeel, so beer aficionados will definitely want to keep this one on hand for summer. Pair it with a light salad with lemon vinaigrette dressing. Jabez Martinez • 4 This is a cloudy, straw-colored beer. I enjoy the sweet spices this beer has, though it does have a hint of sourness. I believe that is the Belgian properties coming through. The only thing that would make this beer better is if the ABV was kicked up a little bit. It is Megadeth, after all, so a little more bang for the buck would be nice, but that's just me.

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 9 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. 72 |

NEWS4U | BEER REVIEWS ELYSIAN SPACE DUST IPA

going on flavor-wise in this brew, but beware: at 8.2% ABV it’s so drinkable it can sneak up on you. If you enjoy IPAs, I highly recommend this one. Paul Bragin • 4 A slowly forming white head rests on top of this golden India Pale Ale. A very strong hop presence controls the nose, with more of a pine scent rather than citrus. The hop bitterness continues after taking a sip of the beer, takes a rest for a moment and returns in the long finish. Hopheads will want to try this. Pair it with spicy foods like Cajun, Japanese, Indian or Mexican cuisines.

Daniel Knight • 5 Right up front, in my opinion this beer is extraordinary. It pours up cloudy and light orange with a prefect one finger head, good retention and lacing. The nose is of citrus, pine and floral hops. The flavor is a delightful balance of malts and hops with a definite lean towards the hops side. The mouthfeel is excellent. There’s a lot

Jabez Martinez • 4.5 This is a hazy yellow beer with good carbonation. It's a pretty good IPA, but I gave it higher marks since it has an 8.2% ABV. Sometimes when they amp up the ABV in IPAs they become a little hard to drink, but that isn't the case here - it's pretty smooth and has a nice balance of hops. I had never heard of this beer but would like to see what else they have.

NEWS4U | BEER REVIEWS MAUI BREWING CO. BIKINI BLONDE

SIERRA NEVADA SIDECAR

Andrew Dyson • 4.5 Maui Bikini Blonde is a light and clean lager that took me by surprise! Crisp and refreshing, this is the kind of beer that you can drink easily on a hot summer day. It doesn't sit heavy in your stomach like some craft brews and would go great at a summer cookout. This beer gets me excited for the summer!

Andrew Dyson • 3 Sidecar pours a light amber with a foamy, white head. The orange flavor really stands out and makes Sidecar refreshing and easy to drink. Another solid entry into the Sierra Nevada catalog that current fans of the brand will enjoy but accessible enough to be a great entry into the rest of the Sierra Nevada brews!

Paul Bragin • 4 A thick white head forms on the beer when poured into a pilsner glass. The beer below is a clear golden hue. The scent maintains a malty presence reminiscent of other lagers. This first sip is cold, light and refreshing. This could pair well with grilled foods like chicken or sausages. It might also go well with a lighter salad. This will be a welcomed addition to the hotter summer months.

Paul Bragin • 3.25 A generous white head crowns this deep golden ale and never completely disappears. The scent of orange peel used in the brewing process remains very present but not overpowering. The taste of the beer contains a lot of bitter orange peel notes. Pair it with lighter dishes like grilled salmon, orange glazed chicken, brie cheese or crème brulee. It might also work as an addition to a recipe that features orange flavors.

Jabez Martinez • 3 This beer is hazy yellow-colored with good carbonation. I consider it an average lager. I guess I was wishing for a little more character since it is a beer from an exotic place. Not great but not bad, just an OK lager.

Jabez Martinez • 4 I was thinking this was going to be some sort of Blue Moon clone but I was wrong. I didn’t notice the hops on the label until I took my first drink. This beer is rich in hops flavor, but the orange is a little faint. It's pretty good, though - just not what I was expecting.

TAP TALK

WITH JOHN GREENWELL | OWNER OF BEEF 'O' BRADY'S

I

t's February and we are officially in the dog days of winter - that time of year when stouts and porters are at their highest volume of sales. A dark, heavy beer that's rich in flavor is great during these colder months. I recently spoke with Gerst Haus Bar Manager Paul Ankenbrand and he told me that he has a great selection of stouts and porters on tap right now which doesn't surprise me. Most locations that know great craft beer will ensure they have the right beer on tap for the season and will be sure to have these styles on tap right now. March, on the other hand, will bring more springtime brews. Here are our recommendations for those who enjoy the rich flavors of stout and porters to help you make it through these cold, dark winter days. Founders Porter pours silky black with a creamy tan head. The nose is sweet with strong chocolate and caramel malt presence. No absence of hops gives this robust porter the full flavor

you deserve and expect. 45 IBU / 6.5% ABV and rates 100 on Ratebeer. Southern Tier Choklat is an Imperial Stout brewed with chocolate, ale yeast, two varieties of hops, four types of malts, and bittersweet Belgian chocolate. With a scent of chocolate, sweet caramel notes, and hints of vanilla, it goes down smooth and creamy. But beware: this delicious brew packs a punch with a 10% ABV, so drink responsibly. The best part about stouts and porters is how they add character to the food you eat with them. They are typically a slow drinking style of beer and go great with a dessert. Here at Beef's, our Funnel Cake Fries go perfect with any stout and porter and so does our Molten Chocolate Cake. Have a great month and definitely have fun during Mardi Gras.

GREAT PICKS FOR

VALENTINE'S DAY!

I

t’s That Time Of the Year Again! If you get this wrong, it could be a LONG year. It’s February, the month when the weather is usually the coldest, and we start to get on each other’s nerves! So, this article is mainly for the men of the house, so they can show some hidden talent and impress their significant other.

Valentine's Day is going to be upon us quickly, and it can be a make or break time for many of us. It's really important to get right so here are a few suggestions to make it go well for you. First, CHOCOLATE! More chocolate is sold during the month of February than any other month. Why you may ask? Because many women like CHOCOLATE! Now, if you go out and buy some, expect to drop a small bundle - good chocolate is not cheap. But you can make a chocolate dessert that will wow her with a few ingredients and a little planning. First, buy a small bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips, measure out 1 cup of chocolate chips and put them in a microware safe bowl. Add ¾ cup of heavy cream to the chocolate chips, enough to cover them with the cream, you may not have to use all of it. Add a tablespoon of butter - if you look at a stick of butter, many have markings in tablespoons on the wrapper. Now, for flavoring, you can add Dekuyper Razzmatazz for a raspberry flavor, Triple Sec if you want an orange flavor, or in a pinch you can just add vanilla, 2 tablespoons. Put the bowl into the microwave and melt the chocolate on HIGH 30 seconds at a time for about 1 ½ to 2 minutes. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it rest for 5 minutes. After resting, with a rubber spatula, stir the mixture to blend thoroughly. It should be smooth and well combined. Now, here is where you need to figure out what you want to do. If you want, you can pour this into a nice bowl, and put strawberries

around it for dipping, like a fondue. Or you can pour this mixture into a plastic wrap-lined dish and put it into the refrigerator for 3 hours to chill. This will set up and you can serve it with cookies, as a chocolate pate. Now that we have the chocolate done, it's time for the wine! I would suggest two different wines if you want a sweet wine made for chocolate. The first one is Serena, a sweet red wine. It's a blend of Brachetto and Moscato grapes from Italy. It's low alcohol, and the flavors are just wonderful when it's served with chocolate. It has a sweet tart cherry flavor and is light and easy to drink. Buy more than one bottle because you don’t want to run out. It’s under 12 dollars so buying two won’t set you back much. The second wine is Stella Rosa Rosso, also from Italy. It's also a blend of Brachetto, but they add Barbera for a slightly less sweet wine that also has a bit more body. It's about the same price, so again, this should not be too painful. Dinner will eat up a bunch of cash anyway! If your significant other does not drink sweet wines, but you still want to serve some chocolate, my first choice would be Southern Belle, a Spanish Tempranillo, aged in a famous makers Bourbon barrel. It’s smooth and fruity with a slight bourbon finish. Pairing this wine with

NEWS4U | WINE REVIEWS chocolate brings out the intense fruit this wine has. Under 20 bucks, and a wonderful wine to have around just to drink.

My second choice would be Ca’Momi Rosso, a Napa Valley Red Blend. It's a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and little bits of other grapes. It's soft and easy to drink. With chocolate, it will lift the fruitiness of the Zinfandel and is very pleasant with low tannins. And for a Napa Valley wine it's a steal at $11.49!

So, there you have it, my contribution to your Valentine’s Day success. I hope you are sleeping on the bed and not the couch. Always here to help. On that note, I will be at our University location on Mondays, the St. Joe location on Wednesdays, and the First Avenue location on Fridays. If you need some help come on by and look me up. Until next month, I hope you stay warm and brave the winter! Spring will be here soon! Walt
