WNIN Kids Fest
As the exclusive media sponsor for WNIN’s annual Kid’s Fest, Go Team looks forward to meeting and greeting all of the kids, parents, friends, grandparents and everyone who comes to the public television station grounds on September 18. Last year’s event was a huge success, despite some early morning rain, and this year is shaping up to offer something fun, exciting and educational for youngsters of all ages. Look for our booth at the event, which is slated to begin at 10 a.m. on the 18th at the station, which is located in downtown Evansville at 405 Carpenter Street. We’ll be there serving up plenty of fun along with so many others, Dylan Gibbs representing both local and national organizations and Managing individuals (think of those wonderful characters from your Editor child’s favorite PBS shows). As always, this free family event is a jam-packed four hours of fun and entertainment that includes on the big Carpenter Street Stage such locals as the nationally-renowned Tales & Scales, the Evansville Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, the awesome magician Don Baggett, Boom Squad, Inc. and performances from the Evansville Dance Theatre. Many of the sponsors will be offering cool hands-on activities for children of all ages, and every single kiddo that comes to WNIN Kids Fest will receive a free book! Among the many activities, crafts, entertainers and more are some famous faces that fans of public television (and who isn’t?) will instantly recognize. Yep, celebrities will be on hand for plenty of high-fives and photos with the kids. Luminaries from the world of PBS will include Sesame Street’s Elmo, Curious George, Wordgirl and Sid the Science Kid.
August - September 2010
The all-too-cute Elmo is among the characters scheduled to be at WNIN Kids Fest. WNIN Kids Fest is a great opportunity to enjoy a Saturday with the family. The event is free to all; just bring everyone along and be ready to have a lot of fun. For more information, you can visit wnin.org. And be sure to stop by and visit the Go Team booth while you’re there! We can’t wait to see you!

Have a favorite coach you’d like to see featured in the Coaches Corner? Send an email to editor@goteammagazine.com!
Mr. Gourley takes on the task of teaching wrestling to elementary students (and even some preschool kids) in the Harrison feeder system. He brings a lifetime of wrestling knowledge to the volunteer job, and enjoys it immensely, as Go Team found out in a recent interview. GT: What is your primary motivation as Dylan Gibbs a coach? Managing JKG: I took a lot out Editor of wrestling when I was younger; it afforded me an opportunity to wrestle for Purdue. It’s a wonderful sport; it’s individual to a degree and afforded me some insight into life. I want to provide these kids that same opportunity. My motivation is to just give something back to wrestling… and these little dudes are really cool. I want to give them the opportunity that I had. What is one or a couple of the most important things you want your kids to learn? It’s truly not all about winning. It’s about – and I lecture them constantly – sportsmanship and representing Harrison High School, and their behavior at tournaments is a reflection on our program. I want them to be good sports – good winners, good losers, good team mates and to reflect a good attitude.
What is it about wrestling that can teach a young person about life? Sports in general can teach about life; you learn a lot about competition, winning, losing, teamwork, that sort of thing. Wrestling is a bit unique in that it is a team sport but you’re also in an individual situation as you’re helping your team. But you’re out there by yourself; it’s one-on-one and sometimes you just have to suck it up. It does toughen you up. It’s easy when you’re tired and you’re getting your butt kicked to say ‘well, second place isn’t that bad.’ But it’s even more difficult to find it deep down and pull it out to keep fighting, keep your head up, and win the match. If you can pin it down to one – what’s one very proud moment you’ve had with this? That’s an easy one. When my son wrestled; I really enjoyed that. He’s a great kid… he wrestled all through grade school and when he got to Harrison, August - September 2010
the four years he was varsity at Harrison, he won a lot of matches as one of the best wrestlers in the state. I was very proud. And we had fun with it, because he didn’t ‘cut weight,’ he didn’t go to camps; he didn’t live it and breathe it, he just went out and had fun. You know, wrestling’s not all just being the strongest guy out there, or the quickest guy. I try to teach this with my kids, in that you gotta be smart. Know where you are on the mat; know how much time is on the clock. Who’s a coach or an athlete or someone you look to for inspiration? I’m kind of my own guy. It seems to me that most of the wrestling coaches that I’ve had, and the ones that I’ve seen, they kind of coach by intimidation and yelling, that sort of thing. I don’t yell at ‘em; I don’t intimidate them. I coach by love; if they screw up I say, ‘hey, that hurts my feelings – that reflects on me.’ It’s a kind of mentor thing, as opposed to ranting and raving. I also like the guys that were able to be effective competitively in to their later years. Know about a coach, mentor, trainer or other leader you’d like to see featured as our Coach of the Month? August - September 2010
Core Value of the Month: RESOURCEFULNESS resourcefulness: Using what you have to get the job done. There are many ways to approach getting a job done. The typical approach is to evaluate exactly what needs to be done and what is required to do it. We all dream of having unlimited materials to do the job easily and efficiently. More often though, there are significant limitations in materials, time, and money. How can teaching kids to be resourceful build their character? Limits are recognized and overcome. Discouragement is a large hurdle to clear when there doesn’t seem to be enough available to get the job done. When the limitations are overcome using resourcefulness, the accomplishment seems even sweeter. Creativity is encouraged. Producing a solution from limited materials fuels a child’s awareness of his/her creativity. Success is a natural encouragement for future efforts. Children develop insight into how they can use their individual talents to creatively respond to new challenges. The process is valued as much as the product. The most valuable aspect of doing a job is building a set of problem-solving tools. The process becomes particularly important when circumstances are less than ideal. Personal confidence grows when children see how previously developed methods from other areas of their lives can be applied to new situations. For example, how can the discipline it takes for gymnastics apply to schoolwork, or vice versa? Children are gifted with imaginations that amuse and amaze adults. During the time when this gift is most active, we can help children see past a lack of resources to develop and maintain an approach to life that uses what they have to get the job done. © 2010 Core Essentials, Inc. Jill is a fearless goalie, one of her travel team captains and has awesome field skills also. She made the varsity team on the cub team (as a sixth grader). She also was a starter on her grade school’s basketball ball team which won “the best of the west” two years in a row. She is a team player, great leader and very dedicated athlete. She has been told she’s one of the best goalies in our area but yet stays humble and plays hard. -- Paula Brinkmeyer
Jennifer is very active in all sports. She is the best at all of them. You will never find any body like her. She cares about everyone on her team and friends. So you should make her athlete of the month. -- Chelsea Doty
I am nominating Brooklynn because I think she is such an amazing little girl. She excels in everything she does and never gives up. She has played softball for the last three years and has played ABA Basketball and made it for the All-Star Team this year. She is also on the Academic Team at her school. She is a Missionette at her church and loves to help other people. She never gets discouraged and is always ready to learn new things. She has an outgoing personality and is friends with everyone and is always willing to help her friends or anyone in need. I am extremely proud of this little girl for all her accomplishments and think she deserves this. -- Jennifer Rideour
