NOTE
FROM
THE
EDITOR
Where to start? First, I’d like to give Mayor Winnecke a shout-out for kindly agreeing to sit down and discuss the latest city developments as well as participate in a fairly silly Q&A. It’s not every day that such an opportunity presents itself, so a big thank you is in order (side note: the parking ticket we received during our visit to the Civic Center was a downer, but at least we can say we’re doing our part to fund some of the really cool projects going on downtown - and that the parking police are on it!). You can check out the results of our wide-ranging talk on page 6. Event-wise, May brings the inaugural Mesker Music Festival, which aims to bolster the campaign to renovate Mesker Amphitheatre. The day-long concert is jam-packed with over 50 (mostly) local bands, including the return of indie-rock heroes, Mock Orange, fresh off a tour of Japan. We

talked to guitarist Joe Asher about the long history of the band as well as their excellent new album. We’ve also got previews of June events, including ROMP and the Third Annual Sudz on Green River headlined by this month’s cover star, Bret Michaels. It’s pretty much guaranteed to be the biggest party of the year, especially if early ticket sales are any indication. Last, but never least, we’ve got all kinds of western Kentucky activity to report beginning on page 52 with an exclusive John Michael Montgomery interview. The CMA Award Winner comes to the Owensboro Convention Center on May 13! All that and more inside... -TE

State of the
City
with Mayor Lloyd Winnecke
With Mayor Winnecke settling into his second term and the landscape of Evansville seemingly changing by the day, it seemed the perfect time to take stock of where we are as a city. To our pleasant surprise, we were granted a meeting at the Civic Center to do just that. Mayor Winnecke kindly fielded all of our questions about the latest developments and ongoing projects in Evansville from downtown to Mesker Amphitheatre. Let's start with Mesker Amphitheatre as the Mesker Music Festival is scheduled for late May. What's the latest on the debate over possible renovation? We laid out four quality of life projects in our State of the City speech in February that we are going to start working on in addition to all the other big projects that are getting a lot of publicity. And those are the Amphitheatre, Mesker Zoo, Lloyd Pool and Roberts Park. In regards to the Amphitheatre, we are going to put together a task force - and we have literally had people come out of the woodwork to be on it. So, we're trying to get the right number and right personalities and thinkers at the table. And we're going to give them a direction. We're going to define that scope of what we want them to do - and give them a reasonable amount of time to come up with a recommendation on what to do. My personal goal is to be able to renovate it and reopen it for reuse as a performing arts center. But we've got to find the revenue to do it. The good news is that we have another $12.5 million which is coming in a lump sum in early 2018 from Tropicana that is not designated at this point. So, our thinking today is that we'll put some of that in the rainy day fund and use the rest to help build these four quality of life projects. Speaking of quality of life, what's the plan going forward for the Greenway? We are in the process of doing preliminary engineering work on the Indian High Rail side which is US 41 from Covert up to Walnut - on the west side of the highway there is an abandoned rail line. So this year we start the preliminary engineering work on that section. That will go up 41 and at Walnut you'll cross there and on the east side of 41 at Walnut it will

connect into the Greenway that goes around the cloverleaf and then connects to the new pedestrian overpass and there's a path that goes around the Joshua Academy which connects into Oak Hill - which is our first truly complete street, meaning it has a planned capacity for vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians. We have 6.75 completed miles of Greenway now - but we understand through the Voice - our visioning process that we started shortly after we came into office - that people, especially millenials, really value green space. Fitness always seems to be a thorn in Evansville's side with various studies labeling the city overweight and miserable. Do you feel like we're making progress? We were so put off by that "fattest city" mantra when we came into office that we created a monthly exercise program which is free to the public - it's on the third Saturday of every month, always at a city facility. In the spring, beginning in April, we've asked the Signature School to come up with an exercise program for us. Then we'll also tie in to the Deaconess Healthier U Walks. We have more people in the spring and summer as you can imagine because it's nicer and people don't mind being outside. The thing that I find really encouraging about this program is the professional trainers all volunteer their time so there's no expense to the city - and they tailor each workout to everyone's physical need and ability. We've also done everything from Zumba to line-dancing to water aerobics and yoga as part of Streets Alive! I think we're making progress. Our goal is to kind of chip away at [Evansville's image] and make people more aware of all the community fitness events going on. We're very active in social media in getting the word out - we partner with radio stations to get the word out as well as with Bob's Gym.
Recently, a $5 fee to enter Wesselman Woods was implemented by the city and many people were not happy. Were you expecting a backlash? Well, you know, things cost money. We have a finite amount of resources and so we felt that was the thing to do. If over a period of time, it's not the thing to do then we'll revisit it. But you can't have nice facilities for free. The improvements that have been made there have been made with private contributions. We raised $1.5 million from the private sector, so as a result we have a nice, new entrance there so it no longer looks like you're walking into a minimum security prison. We have really nice exhibits that I saw for the first time this week - they're really phenomenal. For many years, you saw the same thing when you went there, but now there are beautiful exhibits that are really interactive and that we think are going to be a big draw. We appreciate the feedback that people have given. The charge wasn't made without any thought -but at the end of the day we have to figure out how to pay for things. You've been very progressive when it comes to revitalizing the downtown area. Are you happy with the developments thus far? If you go back to Mayor Weinzapfel building the Ford Center, that was a huge jumpstart for downtown. I can't overstate the importance of that. We've had everything from Elton John to Luke Bryan, from hockey to basketball - it's a huge draw. Vibrant cities have strong urban cores - you can't find a strong city that doesn't have a strong downtown. In terms of the next stage of development, they'll start to demolish the car dealership in probably mid to late April - then construction can start on the medical school. Tropicana will start to relocate utilities here very shortly. And they will probably start real work around August or September - so you have those three big projects. Then you look at the regional city's plan - 19 projects are in regional cities. The majority of them are in the city - several downtown. So you have projects related to the Y, the Vectren Higher Housing proposal and then you have what's going with the McCurdy. Haynie's Corner is phenomenal. Plus, we've got a protected bicycle path in the works. It's our vision that one day it will go all the way to Vann Avenue. In two years, you won't recognize our downtown area from today.
Getting to know... Mayor Lloyd Winnecke Best Perks of the Job? The first thing that comes to mind is that people are nice to you - at least in person (laughs). And I get great parking at USI.
Best round of golf to date / Jack Nicklaus or Tiger Woods? 72 / Nicklaus - I like Tiger a lot, though.
Is there such a thing as downtime for you and if so, how do you cut loose? I do like to play golf. I don't play nearly as much as before I became mayor, but I do love it. If I can spend any time FaceTiming with my grandsons that live in Arizona, that's a good time. Luckily, I like all parts of this job. It's great, because you really get to make a difference. For instance, if a neighborhood calls and says, 'Hey, we're having trouble with drug dealers in our neighborhood, can you help increase police patrols?', we can help and that's pretty gratifying.
What does a mayor rock out to? (Laughs) Well, in my car I almost always listen to sports talk. But I like a lot of different kinds of music. I'm probably not a big hard-rocker, but I like Springsteen and Mellencamp a little bit of everything. I'm not a country aficionado but there's some country stuff I can sit down with and enjoy.
Do you have a fitness regimen at this time or does your schedule make it too difficult? I don't have a regimen now - and I say that with a smile because my wife always teases me about this. The desire is there, but it's just a time issue - though like I said, I do attend the monthly Energize Evansville fitness events. I'm right there in the front - I have total fun when I'm there, cracking jokes like, 'Can we go to Donut Bank yet? We need some Long Johns.' I also participate in the Clean Evansville project - I get my squats in making the city look good.
Do you remember where you met your wife and the first thing you said to her? Yes and no. I was the television reporter at Channel 14 and she was the Parks Director for the City of Evansville. So it was in a professional setting, but I don't remember what was initially said - though I'm sure it was something smooth (laughs). On our first official date we went to Atlanta to see the Peach Bowl, because IU was playing and Carol's an IU grad. She likes sports, I like sports.

YELLOW CREEK PARK • JUNE 22-25
Bluegrass legend Sam Bush talks new album, past and present collaborations and more
H
osted by the International Bluegrass Music Museum, ROMP continues to grow in stature every year, attracting some of the biggest names from the region and around the country. But it’s not just the incredible performances that bring so many people together. The annual Owensboro festival is a complete experience: music, arts and crafts, children’s activities, IBMM exhibits, films and, of course, the scenic setting of Yellow Creek Park where you can camp out and take in the beauty of nature. This year’s ROMP lineup includes headliners Old Crow Medicine Show, Del McCoury Band and the amazing Sam Bush Band. One of the leaders of the progressive bluegrass movement, Bush has been going strong for over 45 years, forging a singular career that began with the formation of the Bluegrass Alliance in 1970 and the hugely influential New Grass Revival a year later. He’s currently readying a new solo album scheduled to drop just in time for ROMP. Throughout your career, you’ve surrounded yourself with the very best bluegrass musicians around. Can you quantify what impact playing with such talented people has had on your own playing? There’s an old phrase, “You’re only as good as the people you play with.” For instance, when we got to the point in New Grass Revival when Bela Fleck had joined the band, we knew he could push us further. So, really, I’m always encouraged by people who I think are fantastic musicians because I want to join in with them, and it’s the same way as when we formed our one-album group called Strength in Numbers. In that situation, I was playing with people who were contemporaries - equals, I guess. All five of us had the ability to push the other ones and so I felt like I was in a band where I could relax and be the main rhythm player - which is what I love to do. It’s the same way with my current band - the guys are just incredibly talented.
I think one thing that sets it apart a little bit is that we went for compositions and arrangements above jam sessions and hot licks. And Bela and Mark (O’ Connor) figured out one day that if all of us co-wrote a tune with one of the other members, we’d have 10 co-written tunes with the five of us. In other words, we all co-wrote a tune with the other guy. We all sounded different when we were collaborating with different people. For me, it was about as close as you can come to being in a small classical chamber group. The way we arranged the compositions, each person had their part that they contributed - that was your job and you didn’t vary. So in that way I’m pretty proud of the album. You’re such an enthusiastic presence on stage. Are you the same way in the studio? Pretty much. This new album has been really easy going, because it wasn’t all made at once. Actually, four of the tunes were recorded in Florida four years ago. The rest of them were pretty much done in the last year and a half. It was just a case of booking some studio time when I felt I had some tunes. In the last five years, I’ve just been co-writing with a lot of my friends. I have very talented pals who are great songwriters. So this time will be the first time that I’ve at least co-written all the tunes. Even though there are two instrumentals, it’s really kind of my singer-songwriter record I’ve been hoping to make for a long time. As a Kentucky native, do you tailor your set at all for the ROMP crowd? The set can be tailored a little bit. But I know that when we come to ROMP I can relax and feel free to be from Kentucky (laughs). I might play a song that relates to my home state that I wouldn’t normally play in Colorado or wherever. But you know, ROMP is not really any one kind of music festival - we can feel free to play electric. I feel like anything will work. For more info, visit rompfest.com.
Speaking of Strength in Numbers, that ‘super group’ really created a unique sound.

FRIENDS OF VICTORY THEATRE GOLF OUTING EVANSVILLE COUNTRY CLUB • JUNE 6 Inaugural fundraiser will kick off new effort to restore classic marquee, light up Main Street
“W
hen I moved here, I was looking for the Victory Theatre, and it took me a bit to realize I was standing right in front of it,” Ford Center Executive Director Scott Schoenike says as he recounts the moment when the idea to bring back the historic venue’s original sign first took shape. “There’s really no markings on it - just the glass doors.” In 2012, he and his team took over operations of the Victory and started doing some research. What they discovered was surprising. “We found out that replacing the marquee was actually phase two of the original Victory restoration project in 1998,” Schoenike explains. “Fundraising had begun, but then it just fell by the wayside.” Spearheaded by Friends of Victory Theatre, a group of influential community members, the original restoration project ultimately came up short, but it would prove to be the catalyst for a new effort to make Main Street truly pop again. Of course, the same issue that stalled the campaign back in the late 90s is still very much a challenge: money. Schoenike estimates that replacing the marquee will cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $250,000. The good news is that he intends
12 |
May 2016 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com
to pay for the project through fundraisers, grants and capital donation funds. In other words, the city is off the hook. To get the money ball rolling, Schoenike and the reinstated Friends of Victory Theatre have planned an inaugural golf outing at Evansville Country Club on June 6. This top of the line event, combined with the venue’s upcoming 95th anniversary, should make for a great way to kick off the restoration effort. “There are so many other golf outings that we wanted to separate ourselves a little bit,” Schoenike says. “We want business people to take their clients and be able to say, ‘That was worth it.’” Swag items will include a pair of golf shoes, a golf club and no shortage of food and beverages. Schoenike hopes to have raised 75% of the funds for the project by next summer. And he’s confident that all the time and effort and money - will pay off in a big way. “When we put the marquee up, it’s going to totally change that corner. To look down Main Street and see that thing - it’s going to be amazing.” For more info, call 812-422-8000 or email sbrock@thefordcenter.com.

CRACKER WITH THE EASTHILLS & THE COLD STARES Lincoln Ampitheatre • June 10 2016 Performance Series really revs up in June with global stars and regional powerhouses
T
here are few better places to see a summer show than Lincoln Amphitheatre. One of the largest venues of its kind in the nation, it seats 1,500 and is surrounded by the very woods where our 16th president walked when he was a boy. In years past, the amphitheatre primarily served to tell the story of Lincoln through theatrical plays but beginning in 2015, the entertainment focus widened with high profile acts such as the Beatles and Rolling Stones tributes, Hard Day’s Night and Satisfaction. And now the reimagining of Lincoln Amphitheatre continues with the 2016 Performance Series, featuring one of the most influential alternative bands of the last 20 years. Out of the ashes of quirky rock outfit Camper Van Beethoven, Cracker emerged in 1992 with a self-titled debut that referenced rock, grunge, psychedelia, country and more. But it was their follow-up, 1993’s Kerosene Hat, that forever changed the band’s fortunes. Singles “Low” and “Get Off This” hit the airwaves like a freight train; both still receive regular rotation on alternative (and mainstream) radio to this very day. Frontman David Lowery and guitarist Johnny Hickman continued to forge a unique career path over the years with varying lineups, producing 10 studio albums and touring the world to an ever-increasing fanbase. The band’s latest release, 2014’s Berkeley to Bakersfield, featured 18 punk and garage rock-inspired tracks, including lead single, “Waiting My Whole Life.” But it’s the live arena where Cracker has really built its following. The band is known for wild, unforgettable shows, so don’t miss this opportunity to see them at such an amazing venue on June 10! In support, Indiana’s The Easthills and Nashville blues-rock duo The Cold Stares will demonstrate why the best musical talent can be found right here in this region of the country. The show starts at 6 p.m. For tickets and more info, visit lincolnamphitheatre.com. The venue is located at 15032 E. County Rd. in Lincoln City / 812-937-9730.

MESKER PARK MUSIC MESKER SHELTERS & TOAST • MAY 28
festival
Hometown favorites Mock Orange headline a day of great local music to kick-start the amphitheatre renovation effort
T
here’s been a lot of talk of late about the fate of Mesker Amphitheatre. And while there has certainly been some vocal opposition to bringing the venue back to life based on cost and viability, the great majority of people in the area seem to be in favor of moving forward. Until recently, however, no one was spearheading the effort. Enter Michael Armanno - better known as Mikey J - a 25-year-old transplant from Indianapolis with a fresh perspective on, among other things, the local arts and music scene. After hearing both sides of the Mesker Amphitheatre argument, he landed firmly in the renovation camp and quickly went to work plotting a music festival to draw attention to the cause. It didn’t take long for the idea to catch on. “We started out small with just three (Mesker) shelters and then it blew up and everybody wanted to be a part of it,” Armanno says.”We knew we had to make it bigger and added a mobile stage plus the main stage on the patio of Toast.” Soon the festival was bursting with local bands - over 50 in all - including headliners Mock Orange who will take the stage virtually straight from their upcoming tour of Japan. Other bands scheduled to perform include Thunder/Dreamer, Jangle Sheep, Seize the Empire, Blood Tribe, Be My Doppelganger, So Long Vinyls and many, many more. Smartly, Armanno has booked each stage by genre, allowing fans to easily navigate the festival. Ultimately, the goal of Mesker Music Festival is to raise awareness not necessarily big dollars. The price tag for the renovation has been estimated in the millions, so the event is really all about spreading the word and getting more people invested in the cause. EVANSVILLE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA PRESENTS:
VICTORY THEATRE • MAY 14 & 15
Fantastic run of performances set to conclude with full screening of legendary film and live musical score
W
hen it was announced at the start of the second half of the EPO’s 2015-16 season that Maestro Alfred Savia had signed on to helm the orchestra for several more years, there was a collective cheer from longtime ticket holders. Even more, you could sense that the final shows were going to be infused with extra energy and passion. No doubt the January through April run of performances certainly lived up to expectations and then some. In fact, Maestro Savia and the orchestra hit the mark all season long and now it’s come down to one last epic performance, a sequel of sorts to last season’s explosive finale.
providing the emotionally-charged score by Nino Rota live as the action plays out on the big screen. Ah, if only all movies could be experienced this way. Thankfully, there are two performances scheduled, because chances are you’re going to want to see it again.
A year ago, the EPO went out with a serious bang, providing the live musical score to Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean. As an encore, the orchestra will accompany a full screening of the 1972 Best Picture Oscar winner, The Godfather, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The legendary film introduced audiences to Don Vito Corleone (played to perfection by Marlon Brando), the infamous patriarch of a New York Mafia family, going on to become one of Hollywood’s greatest critical and commercial successes.
So, how will Maestro Savia and the EPO top the 2015-16 season? For starters, they’ve got an amazing opening Classics night scheduled with internationally acclaimed cellist, Zuill Bailey performing Michael Daugherty’s Tales of Hemmingway Concerto for Cello & Orchestra. The Pops series kicks off with a Halloween bash and a variety of musical chills and thrills including “Night on Bald Mountain,” “Psycho,” “Ghostbusters” and more. Also look forward to performances by such great talents as baritone Jubilant Sykes, 2014 Silver Prize winner of the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, Tessa Lark, plus returning guest artists Daniel Narducci and Christina Zimmer Overton. It will all lead up to yet another incredible conclusion in May as the EPO provides live musical accompaniment to Steven Spielberg’s action/adventure classic, Raiders of the Lost Ark.
But no matter how many times you’ve seen The Godfather, you’ve never seen it like this - imagine the area’s best and most powerful orchestra

Bike, run or walk to benefit the Junior League of Evansville, their missions and charities
T
he long wait is finally over. One of the community’s favorite events is back for another exciting weekend of fun and physical activity for a good cause. Over the last four years, the Junior League of Evansville’s Rockin River City Ride & Run has continued to grow and attract participants of all ages - both novice and experienced cyclists and runners - eager for a challenge. But perhaps the biggest draw of the event is simply the beauty of downtown Evansville in the spring. There’s no better time of year to get out and enjoy the riverfront with friends and family. The action gets started on Friday, May 13 with the Rockin Run which features a 3 or 5 mile run/walk followed by a musical after-party. On Saturday, participants will be able to choose from a 5K Family Bike
Ride and 25K, 60K or 100K Bike Ride. Both walkers and riders will enjoy numerous fully-stocked rest stops, excellent free route support, a bike park that will include food and merchant vendors, a kids’ park with bounce houses, games, prizes, bike helmet giveaway and a bike safety presentation. Of course, the Rockin River City Ride & Run wouldn’t be possible without the Junior League of Evansville and its many supporters. The event raises much needed funds for the JLE, an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism and developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Since its inception back in 1926, the JLE has given over one million dollars to the Evansville community. In addition to the charitable impact of Rockin River City Ride & Run, the event also greatly benefits downtown Evansville. Hundreds of people converge on the area every year, drawing attention to local businesses and ongoing property development - all of which helps to elevate the profile of the city. Don’t miss out on one of the most exciting and scenic community events of the year! To register, visit rockinrivercityride.org.

t’s sometimes difficult to open a fusion restaurant - but even harder to do it well, which is exactly what Randy Hobson has achieved with flying colors. His previous career of 25 years allowed for plenty of travel and in doing so, helped shape his current venture - Pangea Kitchen, a marriage of Neapolitan and Thai cuisine. Backed by a passionate, seasoned culinary team, Hobson has crafted a menu filled with incomparable, inventive dishes and created the sort of ambiance reminiscent of big city restaurants: rustic and modern, bright and open, with an intimate feel. Pizzaiolo Alessio Lacco, a native of Naples, Italy, settled in Evansville just eight months ago, and is a crucial part of the Pangea team. His creations come from pulled (not tossed) dough and in-house pulled mozzarella cheese, with fresh and imported ingredients made in a traditional wood-fired oven. I tried the Pistachio Neapolitan pie, a combination of spicy, sweet, and savory flavors with sauce made from pistachio paste, local sausage, mozzarella, fresh basil, and a spicy honey drizzle. The crust was unique - thin and chewy without being soggy despite the ingredient base, and hearty edges perfect for sopping any remnants of leftover sauce. For the next dish, Chef Wanphen McDonald, originally

from Bangkok, Thailand, prepared Pad Ke Mao, or Drunken Noodles, my favorite Thai dish with a twist - they use fusilli noodles prepared by Lacco, an excellent variation with ginger, bok choi, garlic, oyster sauce, basil, and your choice of rotisserie meat, although I recommend beef. The Friday appetizer special is Thai Tacos, with shrimp marinated in a chili/garlic sauce, a cabbage blend in sauce for crunch, tomatoes, cilantro, avocado and lime (high-five to Chef McDonald, because they’re the best I’ve ever tasted). Finally, I couldn’t leave without enjoying something from the Gelateria, so Pastry Chef/ gelato expert Sarah Bruggeman introduced me to macarons (meringue-based French confections) in a variety of flavors, such as honey lavender, raspberry, and pistachio, filled with soft butter cream. I also tried the raspberry sorbetto, an icy concoction bursting with flavor - the perfect way to end such a phenomenal meal. Pangea also serves beer and wine, and their specialty cheeses and pastas are available for purchase. For a true fusion experience, stop in and see how “The Ground is Shifting in Evansville.” - Whitney Patterson For more info, visit tastepangea.com.

Owner of Beef 'O' Brady's Looks like spring has finally arrived, and it’s time to pull up to a nice patio table and drink a refreshing beer that will satisfy your thirst after a hard day of yard work. The featured beers this month should do the trick. Danny Boy Beer Works out of Carmel, IN is new to the Beef’s lineup. Their MexiCali beer is sure to be a mainstay to our lineup. A refreshing and true lager with Mexican yeast and California-inspired grain bill, this beer is crisp, clean and very drinkable - guaranteed to cure your springtime thirst. ABV: 4.1%, IBU rating of 8 Bell’s Brewery rolled out a brand new beer called Oatsmobile in April. It’s the first new addition to its year-round lineup since 2010. Oatsmobile is dry-hopped with a blend of classic and modern Pacific Northwest hops, including Mosaic, Citra and Amarillo, for a pungent blend of stone fruit and tropical aromas. “This beer is unique,” says Bell’s Vice President, Laura Bell. “Aromatics may drive it, but the signature ingredient - oats - is what really makes this beer stand apart and also where the name comes from. It’s approachable and intriguing with a fun personality.” ABV: 4.3% Come out to Beef’s and enjoy the patio with your friends and family. Our lunch specials along with our daily food and beer specials are great to enjoy while sitting outside. Also, Beef’s has started our new live trivia every Monday night from 7:30 p.m.-10 p.m. We look forward to having you come out and try these new beers and enjoy a great night with your friends while answering some fun trivia questions.

Don't need nothin' but a good time: Poison frontman Bret Michaels headlines the wildest two nights of live music in the tri-state - how can we resist?
B
esides co-penning one of the greatest power ballads of all time, "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," and selling over 45 million records with Poison alone, Michaels has maintained a steady and eclectic career within the entertainment business since the band's hey-day, writing and directing his own movie, A Letter from Death Row, as well as hosting and appearing in several reality shows. He's also released five solo and four compilation albums, and has collaborated with many legendary artists such as Loretta Lynn, Jessica Andrews, Ace Frehley of KISS, and Miley Cyrus. Known for his smooth twang not usually found in metal vocals, Michaels moved to Los Angeles in 1984, signing to Enigma Records with his Poison bandmates. He quickly found the fame he was looking for after their debut album, Look What the Cat Dragged In, went platinum with the release of a music video for "Talk Dirty to Me." After the mid '90s, with band tension and personal issues, they slowed down, but came back in a big way with a hugely successful reunion tour in 1999. Still riding high, Michaels and the other members drifted toward solo careers, splitting their time with the band, but he has yet to lose steam. Aside from entertainment endeavors, he also

CHRIS TAYLOR AND THE CUSTOM TAYLOR BAND Tropicana Evansville • May 6 & 7
Countrified Bosse grad returning home for two special performances at Hoosiers Lounge
O
riginally from Owensboro, KY, country singer Chris Taylor grew up in Evansville, attending high school here before heading to the east coast in the summer of 1988. He’s been there ever since. The Bosse graduate lives in Syracuse, NY where he first got interested in singing around 1994. Initially, Taylor just enjoyed doing karaoke at local bars, but as his vocal talent became apparent, he began traveling the country to compete in singing competitions and learned how to be an entertainer. In 2000 and 2001, Taylor wowed judges in Las Vegas and that’s when the media back in New York really took notice. “The Syracuse New Times - which is a local music and entertainment paper - put me on the cover and told all of central New York my story,” he explains. “It wasn’t long after that I put together the Custom Taylor Band, and we’ve been playing in bars and at major concerts for 15 years!” Billed as the east coast’s “premier top 40 country music band,” the CTB features six supremely talented musicians known for leaving fans breathless by the end of a show. Their incredible stage presence is legendary in the New York area and now for the first time ever, Taylor is bringing his group back home to Evansville for a very special two night run at Hoosiers Lounge. “No one here has seen me perform live - not even my family. This will be an awesome show,” he says. You can check out Taylor on YouTube and at customtaylorband.com. Be sure to watch “Something Beautiful,” a video made to raise money for his local YMCA. Both shows start at 8 p.m. For more info, visit tropevansville.com. Tropicana Evansville is located at 421 NW Riverside Dr.

still love singing all the songs that I recorded as much as the day I recorded them,” says country star John Michael Montgomery. With 18 top ten hits and 15 number one singles, including “Life’s A Dance,” “I Swear,” “I Love the Way You Love Me” and “Letters from Home,” the Kentucky native still connects to both the music and his fans in a big way. The reason why is quite simple: believability. For nearly 25 years he has delivered heartfelt performance after heartfelt performance, never giving any less than the songs deserve. As he preps for next year’s silver anniversary tour and greatest hits album, Montgomery - otherwise known as the “Velvet Voice” - is keeping busy on all fronts. He kindly spoke with News4U ahead of his upcoming show at the Owensboro Convention Center which kicks off the 2016 International Bar-B-Q Festival. The tone of your voice has always been ridiculously pure. How long did it take before people really took notice of your talent? Before I put out “Life’s A Dance,” I had been playing nightclubs for a few years in Lexington - of course, that’s where I was discovered. Some Nashville executives were in town and they had asked a bartender where there was a good place in town to see some talent and they said, ‘Well, there’s this guy John Michael Montgomery playing at Austin City Saloon.’ They came by, heard me and signed me up. Of course, there are lots of people who get record deals and put out songs but nothing ever really comes of it. As a matter of fact, in ‘92 there was something like a hundred new artists out and only a handful even got hits on labels. So, it was always intriguing to me - what was it about my voice that connected? I think part of it was because I grew up in a family that sang - both my mom and dad were musicians

and played on the weekends. Also, my brother and I picked and sang ever since we were kids. I just feel fortunate that I grew up in an era with artists like George Strait and Lionel Richie who were masters of singing and making timeless hits. I think having that influence was pretty big - it helped me find a voice that was genuine and believable to people when I sang my songs. But there’s no really no method to the madness. If it was something that could be bottled up, it’d be a very valuable substance. What do you make of the current country sound - the more pop-oriented take on the genre? It seems that singularity is a lost art. Growing up in the ‘70s and ‘80s when you had country and rock and roll, from Johnny Cash to Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, Jr., Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Seger, Alabama, etc. - you had people that were unique, you knew who they were as soon as they came on the radio. They were stylists, but today there’s a lot of sameness in the tracks. A lot of it is marketed to a younger crowd than what even I was playing for - and they like the more poppy stuff. And pop music has always had a tendency to sound alike. I think there’s an argument that that’s what is going on in country music right now - it’s all up-tempo, feel-good, party kind of stuff. But you know there’s some good stuff out there. And there’s a trend right now with all the legend and icon radio stations that are playing the ‘90s artists - and those stations have jumped up in ratings because we’re being introduced to the younger people. They love listening to the classic country channels now. And hey, the thing about it is that the ‘90s was probably the most successful decade of country music ever as far as sales and everything else. It’s coming back around. Continued on page 54.

NEWS4U | WKY UPCOMING EVENTS
What was your secret for knowing which songs to cut in the studio and creating huge hits that you still enjoy performing? One of the things that worked for me was keeping in mind that if a song of mine became a hit, I was going to be singing that song for the rest of my career. So I wanted to make sure that it was something I connected with and that I wouldn’t hate singing ten years down the road - or even a year down the road - because I’ve heard horror stories like that. If I liked a song that somebody pitched me, then I would put the cassette tape or the CD in my truck and I would have it on repeat. As soon as I started my pick-up truck every day, that song would start playing. I would listen to it over and over and over again, because there are a lot of songs that feel good at first but then there’s a burn-out factor. The ones that I kept playing and never got tired of listening to - those are the ones that I would cut, because if I’m connecting with it, I’m hoping it’s going to transition to my fans as well. What’s the plan for the rest of this year and into 2017? You know, it’s going to be my 25th year out on the road next year - 25 years since “Life’s A Dance” came out. I’m going to do a 25th anniversary greatest hits with a new “I Swear” collaboration with All4-One. And maybe I’ll get another artist or two to sing on a couple songs - maybe Hank Jr. singing “Beer & Bones.” And since there is a market out there with the legend and icon stations, there are labels in Nashville that are going to try take artists like myself and push that album out there. Maybe I’ll put one or two new songs on it. Of course, I’d love for me and my brother Eddie from Montgomery Gentry to do something together. I’ll definitely have the album done and ready to go by next year. The show starts at 7 p.m. For tickets, visit owensborotickets.com, go to the OCC Box Office or charge by phone at 270-687-8800.

NEWS4U | WESTERN KENTUCKY MUSIC SPOTLIGHT
Heath & Molly Husband and wife roots-rock duo happy to experience the ups and downs of a life in music together
W
hen Heath and Molly Eric first crossed paths in western Kentucky's tiny "Twin Cities" - aka Calhoun and Rumsey - back in 2009, neither had a clue what an incredible adventure lay ahead, both musically and personally. Neither could have predicted that an innocent invitation to sing harmonies on a solo album would result in a roots-rock solid partnership that just keeps growing stronger through the years. Of course, it hasn't always been easy or always fun, for that matter. But it's never been dull. The duo has toured relentlessly, traveling all over the country and abroad, taking their incredibly rich, full-band sound - and often Heath's son, these days - to wildly disparate venues. Their live resume boasts some of the biggest festivals in the region but also public libraries as well as several shows in the Czech Republic, of all places. With the release of 2014's Beneath the Roots: Live in Cascade Cave, Heath & Molly finally captured on record the restless musical spirit that has won them such a devoted following. The unique setting and the duo's inspired musical interplay combined to make for a magical performance of primarily original material. But nothing can replace being there in person. Heath is the consummate showman on guitar, always moving, always working the crowd, while Molly keeps driving the music forward on percussion. Vocally, each is more than capable of going it alone. But together, their intricate harmonies create some truly transcendent moments on stage - and make apparent the couple's deep connection.
We caught up with Heath Eric just after his first performance of The Dreamer: A Story of Hope, Love & Survival - a one-man show that chronicles the guitarist's dramatic, roller coaster ride through life, told with the goal of helping others overcome obstacles and adversity. So, just to be clear - the music came before the relationship? Definitely. I was looking for a harmony singer on my first solo album, and my aunt told me about Molly. She came in to sing and we clicked
immediately. From that point forward, we became a duo - first as a band and then as partners. What was the first bit of success you experienced as Heath & Molly? One of our early tracks, "Hand in Hand," surprisingly took off for us overseas. It was picked up by the European Radio Broadcast Union, and they started playing it. We started getting international royalties which made us feel really cool (laughs). What era of music has inspired the Heath & Molly sound the most? I grew up in the '80s, but the '70s is definitely where I look to for my music inspiration - I'm a huge Led Zeppelin fan. But I also love John Mellencamp, Waylon Jennings and Tower of Power. At our core, we're roots rockers. That's what we're really known for. You've played at so many different types of venues. What's the next step? We're avid outdoors people and we're on contract with the Kentucky State Park - we're always trying to find cool settings. We'd like to do a show on top of a mountain sometime. I don't know how or when but we love doing shows in historical or scenic settings. Your touring schedule is full-on year after year. Does it feel more like a job than a passion sometimes? it's definitely work - that's what we tell people. It's our job to make it look easy. I work harder doing this than any job I've ever had in my life. We cover a lot of miles on the road. While Molly's driving, I'm over in the passenger seat doing bookings and contracts and accounting and vice-versa. But we love it and we love each other. Sure, there are good times and bad times. I think the key for us that helps us be successful is that we have each other - not just for companionship but to get us through the highs and lows of the business. For more info, including the latest tour dates, visit heathandmolly.com.

NEWS4U | WKY BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
THE BUSINESS Of BOUTIQUES YESTERDAY’S MALLS ARE TODAY’S BOUTIQUES by Tracey Culyer & Allen Payne of Southern Charm
A
boutique is actually a specialized type of retail store. It is distinct from other retail businesses based on its more limited size, scope and inventory. One of the most significant differences between a conventional retail store and a boutique is the actual size of the store. A boutique is relatively small compared with a big-box retailer or general merchandise retailer. Boutiques commonly occupy small spaces in enclosed malls or in strip plazas; they are rarely standalone operations. In contrast, larger retail chain stores have more flexibility in location and have more space in which to sell. Boutiques are also characterized by limited product variety as opposed to general merchandise retailers which often carry a wide selection. Discounters Target and Wal-mart have several product departments, for instance, while a boutique specializes in a very limited number of product or service categories (i.e., a specialty purse or hat shop might only sell that one type of product). Boutiques do often have deep assortments of that one product relative to larger retailers, however, which allows customers more choices. As for the local markets you can find a variety of styles and brands offered in the many new boutiques that have opened throughout Owensboro. There are a variety of stores all over the city, including “Lil Bit Sassy” Children’s Boutique and our own store, Southern Charm Boutique on 18th St and the fast-growing second location in the HWY 54 area. In addition, Excursions was one of the first boutiques to open in town. You can find these stores and more on Facebook or Instagram: @ southerncharmyall, @lilbitsassy125 or @excursions_owensboro

NEWS4U | AROUND THE TRACK
WITH BILLY EGELER Buckle up: It’s full speed ahead as the racing season really heats up in May
T
he new management of Chandler Motor Speedway had a capacity crowd on hand for their opening night and a respectable car count for the first night of racing. After speaking with the new promoters, they seem very pleased and hope for continued success as they move forward. Tommy Helfrich and team didn’t disappoint on their opening show either. A stellar field of USCA/MSCS Sprints were on hand and the UMP Modified portion of the show was worth the price of admission. 30+ mods and sprints checked in for opening night at the Class Track. Jimmy and Misty Westerfield have signed a multi-year agreement to re-open Windy Hollow Speedway in Owensboro. The deal was signed in early April so the duo is behind the 8-ball to get everything repaired

and in working order before opening. The 2016 season at the holler will be limited to abide by some county and state regulations but it will be great to see the 3/8 mile D-shaped track in action again. One rumored improvement for the dated facility for this year will be the use of a transponder system to score the cars on the track. Several other improvements are slated to take place as the weeks roll on. The Owensboro racing community lost a former track promoter/ sponsor/avid fan in April. Mike Lambert, former owner/promoter of a
small track named High Banks Speedway passed away after a lengthy battle with his health. Mike was a frequenter of many area race tracks and sponsored several cars over the years. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Lambert family. I would like to mention that my mind obviously was not working at 100% last issue because I failed to mention a huge accomplishment by a father/ daughter duo last month. Central City, KY drag racers Lynn and Madison Ellison both had an outstanding showing in a recent NHRA Top Dragster event. As if the pair getting down to four cars and the final wasn’t enough, this was Madison’s very first NHRA Top Dragster event and she was piloting a brand new car that was just finished days before hitting the road to the track. Congrats to the Pirate and company on their run! I know we will be hearing A LOT more out of that camp this season. As I wind up this “uneventful” article, I would like to take a moment to mention a different kind of “Race” that has become important to me over the past few years and that is the race to find a cure for cancer. This horrible monster has affected not only my family but several friends. In an effort to help raise money for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, I will have a donation bucket set up at Regional Motorsports Power Hour each Tuesday night. The show is held in the lobby of the Owensboro Convention Center from 7-8:30p.m. The donations will go to my great friend, Angie Baird’s Relay team called 80’s Ladies. I will also accept donations at any race track you might find me. Angie is very involved with our motorsports community and has helped more people in this sport than I can even name. Until recently, I wasn’t aware what all these donations go towards. The American Cancer Society not only spends the money towards research to find a cure but they also take a portion to pay for prescriptions, room and board for cancer patients while going through treatment and even pay for transportation for the patient if needed. Feel free to “Like” Regional Motorsports Power Hour on Facebook and message me if you would like to donate or support the Relay! Folks, I know I preach it every month but PLEASE get out and visit these local race tracks and take someone that has never been! We need to bring this sport back to life! Until next month, Keep the shiny side up! PEACE Billy Egeler Host of Regional Motorsports Power Hour

NEWS4U | LOCAL/REGIONAL MUSIC
MOCK ORANGE Sleeping giants of the tri-state music scene come roaring back with masterful new album, Japanese tour
L
ife often gets in the way of creative pursuits and there's no better example than the five year gap between the two most recent Mock Orange albums. After 2011's Disguised As Ghosts, the veteran indie rock group laid very low, busy with the daily grind of work and other responsibilities. But under the surface, there was musical tension - ideas were impatiently waiting to take shape. Finally, the dam broke in 2014 and out poured a stream of riffs and melodies that frontman Ryan Grisham and guitarist Joe Asher developed and honed into the sharpest collection of the band's two decade-long career. Put the Kid on the Sleepy Horse arrives on May 20 via Topshelf Records in North America and on May 25 in Japan via Asian Gothic Records - where Mock Orange will tour with label mates, The Band Apart, before returning just in time to headline the Mesker Music Festival on May 28. Asher kindly spoke with News4U about the new album and much more. First, let's talk about the circumstances surrounding Put the Kid on the Sleepy Horse. How did it come together and what was the writing process like for you this time around? The album was recorded and produced by Ryan Grisham at Mulberry Street here in Evansville. The songs were written relatively quickly; 11 songs basically came out of 13 or 14 writing sessions. However, the recording of the album took a long time. We took some breaks and also, after recording all of the guitars, bass and drums, Ryan wanted to renovate his studio space and treat it acoustically before we began mixing. That process ended up taking about eight months. After that, when we got everything back out of storage we found that the backup drives containing the files for the record were not functional. We had to send them to three different data recovery companies before we were able to get our data back. After all of this, we still had to put vocals to the songs, which usually Ryan does himself. We decided to try to collaborate on the vocals for the first time and it really worked out well. Then we went to Nashville and bounced our final mixes to tape, which we sent to Alan Douches for mastering. The new album continues the band's move towards a full-on indie rock sound as opposed to the early emo days of Nines & Sixes and The Record Play which some of your older fans still prefer. What's your take on the

evolution of Mock Orange? It's true that we have completely changed sounds. Honestly, we probably should've changed band names in 2002, but at the time the Japanese label that we were working with was very against us changing our name. When we put out First EP in 2002, the title was sort of a nod to our changing sound. Keep in mind our first album came out in 1998. We were kids; we liked different music then. We started listening to The Flaming Lips and Archers of Loaf and Dinosaur Jr. and we just wanted to write different sounding stuff, so we did. Some people liked it, some older fans felt disenfranchised. Personally, I am happy to not be playing the same type of music we were playing 18 years ago. To have no evolution would be boring in my opinion. Going back to the beginning, what was the initial intent of Mock Orange to hopefully make a career in music or simply to enjoy making and playing music? We were just kids in high-school, skateboarding and hanging out. Heath had a drum kit and I had a guitar, we made some terrible songs. Somehow Ryan came over one day, and he was really a much better guitarist than anyone our age I had ever heard. The songs that he wrote were less terrible, so we just kept going. We had a little success, and we started recording in bigger studios and going on longer tours. It just became a thing. We placed some songs in television shows and made a little money. I don't really know, we just never stopped. How has the band's relationship with the local music scene here evolved over time?
I mean, Evansville has always embraced us. I can't remember the last show we played here in town that didn't have a good turn-out, and we've always appreciated that. There aren't a lot of venues here that support local music so sometimes you kind of have to fit a square peg into a round hole to get into a room large enough to have a show. I remember about a decade ago when we did that MTV battle of the bands thing - everyone in town was so psyched and supportive; it was really nice. What are you expecting from the upcoming tour of Japan? Basically the same as the last four or five tours we've done there. The Band Apart's label, Asian Gothic, licensed the new album to release in Japan and the management company is bringing us over to tour and support the release. This time, however, there is an extra wrinkle. In the last few months we have written and recorded two new songs for a limited edition split EP with The Band Apart to promote during this short tour as well. I am talking with Topshelf Records about distributing a vinyl version of this EP in North America and the UK because we are super happy with the two new songs that are on this EP and we want people here in the States to be able to hear the songs as well. They are definitely part of our new live set list. Will the band have an album release party here in town? What are your plans going forward? The album comes out on May 20, but we will be in Japan at that time so the album release party is going to be at Lamasco Bar on Friday, June 10 with Thunder Dreamer. It's actually our first time playing at Lamasco. We've continued to upgrade our recording space and have the capability to do whatever we want here in town now. We can record digitally, straight to tape, whatever, so going forward I hope we are lucky enough to put out more music. That's about all we can hope for. It takes so much time and effort to make these things happen and everyone's life is so hectic, but if it weren't worth it in the end, we wouldn't keep doing it. Producer P.J. Starks announces exciting new deal with Legless Corpse Films
L
ast month, we featured the planned sequel to Volumes of Blood, an indie horror anthology shot in Kentucky that became a surprise hit with critics and fans of the genre. Since its premiere at the Owensboro Convention Center in March of 2015, the film has received major support from high-profile horror websites around the world, leading to the casting of some big names for the follow-up, Volumes of Blood: Horror Stories. And now the popularity of the original anthology has resulted in an exciting new partnership. On April 26, Legless Corpse Films will release Volumes of Blood on Blu-ray (including a steelbook edition) and DVD. A limited edition VHS run is also in the works for old school fans. According to producer P.J. Starks, the film is the largest pre-sale of all the company’s titles. Artwork for the project is being handled by Louisville’s Nathan Thomas Milliner whose credits include cover designs for the Halloween franchise. In addition, he was one of the directors for the original VOB anthology and is on board once again for the sequel. The deal with Legless Corpse is a big boost for regional film and will hopefully lead to more attention being paid to the many talented writers and directors in the area. t was one of the most intriguing and violent periods in the history of the tristate - and yet very few people outside of southern Illinois are familiar with the story of how the Birger and Shelton gangs effectively terrorized the region from Prohibition through the 1940s and beyond. They, along with larger than life personalities like Charles “Blackie” Harris, used strong-arm tactics and plenty of bullets to take over the illegal gambling operations, alcohol trade and other illicit money-making ventures. In doing so, these power-hungry gangsters not only became mortal enemies but also raised the ire of the KKK who, as a Christian organization, were determined to enforce Prohibition. In short, there were casualties all around - bloody scenes straight out of Hollywood. In fact, it all seemed like a movie waiting to happen. “The idea of a documentary has always been in my head since I was a kid,” former Fairfield, IL resident David Wells explains. In 1964, when he was in first grade, Wells recalls school being cancelled so the students could go down to the courthouse and see part of the infamous Blackie Harris trial - the weathered gangster’s second murder charge. The experience left quite an impression. So, years later when Wells started his production company, he was eager to bring that seemingly forgotten period of unrest to the big screen - especially after the premier of a strikingly similar HBO hit series. “When I got real serious about the project was when I started watching Boardwalk Empire,” Wells says. “And I thought this story is in some ways even more interesting. There are so many dynamics, including the fact that you had all sorts of nationalities in southern Illinois at the time - Germans,
Irish, Italians, Russian immigrants.” Bloody Little Egypt, Wells’ title for the documentary currently being filmed, is certainly evocative if not a little confusing at first to those not versed in the backstory. “If you’re from southern Illinois, you know exactly what Bloody Little Egypt means,” he says. “It’s what people used to call the area back in the early history of the state - because of towns like Cairo and antiquity type names.” To fully realize his vision, Wells has started an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds for reenactments and other expenditures. The plan is to complete the documentary by October and air it on PBS and the History Channel. But that’s just the beginning. “Long term, I’ve thought that I could even write a book on it which would take more of an artistic license and embellish the characters maybe try to develop something that could either be a screenplay or like a mini-series.” For more info, visit dkwells.com, email david@dkwells or call 812-480-8170.

Hacking the World by John Thurgood
W
e started hacking the world because we wanted to have a little fun. We hacked the New York Times to post off-color articles about Bryant Gumbel and Katie Couric. We took over a live feed to a national debate to show old footage of Ralph Nader cleaning crude oil from a baby duck. We even changed the colonel’s famous recipe so it would taste like a bowl of menudo. We did all sorts of things like that, but what mattered most was that it was fun. And it was!

New YouTube docu-series highlights cultural happenings in Evansville, people and businesses making a real impact
I
t’s no secret that many of this city’s most talented and creative residents jump ship the first chance they get, often heading for the likes of Chicago, LA or New York in search of better work opportunities and a more exciting social life. Of course, it’s hardly a predicament specific to Evansville. There are cities all over the country experiencing the same dilemma, searching for a way to keep the best of the best at home for both financial and cultural reasons. But not all the good ones get away - and some even come back. In fact, there are plenty of “leftovers” here - innovative, entrepreneurialminded people who have chosen to stay put or return to help Evansville move forward and hopefully be able to compete with more progressive places. It’s the subject of a fascinating new YouTube docu-series produced by Blackstrap Media.
The simple thrill of it kept us going until we accidentally negotiated the merger between Kraft Foods’ easy cheese division and a faux company we had named Un-Brie-Lievable. Overnight, our anonymous bank accounts (we had a few divided across the Cayman Islands and a couple Scandinavian countries) collectively grossed nearly a billion dollars. We had accidentally hit it big. @ vexysexy was the first to say it: “We’re going to jail.” But we knew what she meant: “We were going to be rich!” When most of us went to jail, those of us who didn’t decided to devote ourselves to dismantling the system. We operated under less noticeable pretenses, using basic money laundering techniques to challenge important lobbyists and win. We pushed forward bills for higher spending in education and less funding for military. We rewrote and simplified tax codes, which no one seemed to even notice, and we began organizing a national system of public transit under the guise of social welfare reform. We even got a legitimate Green Party candidate into office. It was everything we had ever wanted, except the fact that it had stopped being fun. It was hard work toppling a government. We began laughing less and going to bed early. We started to forget one another’s birthdays, and it was getting harder and harder to reach down every morning to pull on a pair of socks. But even though we were moving slower and feeling older, we found comfort in a subtler form of satisfaction. We had a voice.
Directed by Kevin Chenault and Christopher Simon and hosted by Adam Rakestraw, Generation Leftovers premiered at PG Cafe on April 10. This first installment set the tone for the planned monthly series, introducing viewers to a side of the city that we don’t always see or hear about. As the creators of GL explain, “The goal of the series is to take a raw view in highlighting the important cultural shifts in Evansville; discover emerging creatives, introduce local talent, review events, and discuss with various generations why they chose to stay in or return to Evansville to live and work.” Follow Generation Leftovers on Facebook. NEWS4U | FASHION ADVICE
Tri-State Fashion with Gina Mullis, Owner of Amerie
S
elf-expression through fashion is key to defining and representing what folks within a community truly believe and represent. Much can be voiced through appearance and fashion of individuals whether it’s boho chic, a modern punk theme, business attire, or charity driven brands. In the case of our very own tri-state fashion, it’s clear that we are a creative, strongly unique, and down-toearth community representing a variety of styles and personalities. One world-wide style trend this spring that people within the tri-state appear to be heavily supportive of is expressionistic style that truly portrays individuality and creativity - a sort of bohemian, organic, earthy flair. The great thing about this is that our small business market is growing rapidly, giving tri-state residents a variety of options to shop local when seeking new, trendy clothing and accessories. I spoke with individuals and local fashion shop owners to gain their perspectives on local fashion trends this spring. When asked about her favorites for spring, fashionable educator Brittany Morrison said, “My style for spring is loose tops, skinny jeans, and hats. I wear a lot of maxi dresses and maxi skirts with crop tops. Boho chic is the big trend for spring and summer, especially for music festivals and other outings.” I have to agree with Brittany, as I have noticed an interest in the bohemian styles and bright, expressive pieces with the customers of my boutique, Amerie. Kelley Borman, owner of Schon Boutique located in the heart of Franklin Street in Evansville, agrees that the tri-state does a magnificent job of dressing in a way that supports national trends, yet speaks to our region. She and her staff expect to see floral patterns, bright colors, dresses and rompers roaming around the streets of the tri-state this spring. No matter what you choose to wear as the weather warms, remember to find your self-expressing wardrobe at one of the tri-state’s many local boutiques, and don’t be afraid to branch out with your style! Fashion is a means of communicating who you are in a single glance. Amerie is located at 10 W. Jennings St. in Newburgh. Follow the boutique on Facebook.

Q:
My friend, who is a Christian, always has a bad and negative attitude about what seems like everything. How can I talk to her about it from a biblical standpoint?
While I understand that no one can be “up” all the time, I, too, have run into a good many “gloomy Christians.” I can - at least partially - understand their negativity. Too many things fail to reflect the love, justice, peace, and joy of God. Violence goes unchecked. The poor and the hungry and the dispossessed are increasing in number. Basic kindness and community are in short supply. There are also those who aren’t handling “change” very well. The world is a very different place than it was in the days of Moses, the Buddha, Jesus, Mohammed, and the great traditions they founded. The reaction to change is, very often, negativity. As a Christian, I would remind your friend that our hope is in the ultimate triumph of God’s way over the destructive ways that seem to be in control. We Christians believe that there is coming a day when love, justice, peace, and joy will be the norm. We celebrate words like, “be of good courage - I have overcome the world!” So, rather than grouse and complain about how awful everything is, Christians should rechannel that negative energy to make possible the positive changes for which they long. Quit bellyaching and get on with building lasting and beneficial love, justice, peace, and joy. First Presbyterian Church is located at 609 SE 2nd St. / 812-423-6297.

Internet Gullibility (or don’t accept Facebook at face value) There’s a great picture on the internet of our 16th president next to a caption that says, ’Don’t believe everything you read on the internet.’ - Abraham Lincoln. Despite these sage words from Honest Abe clearly being a joke on the public’s gullibility, I wouldn’t put it past some people to think he may have actually said this. This is where I need to insist that I don’t say this with an air of pretense. I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve fallen for things that I, too, hastily believed without doing my due diligence. But the difference is that when people told me I was being duped, I listened and dug deeper. Even if I’m completely sure I’ve examined every angle, if someone encourages me to investigate further, I’ll still search for more sources. I don’t want to sound like I’m saying you have to shell out money for a LexisNexis account (I was surprised that’s still a thing), or even take the time to get a free library card (although you should!). But clarification on most issues can be found with even the simplest and most cursory Google search. Is Facebook going to start banning people for posting the Confederate flag? Did Bernie Sanders use campaign donations to buy an Audi R8? Did Ted Cruz secretly moonlight as a male prostitute? Can “this one weird trick!” really frustrate doctors? Chances are, if it sounds too good to be true (or logical), it probably is. But what constitutes a good source? How can you tell the difference between a paid shill and an arbiter of truth? The “About Us” section of a website can sometimes help. Is there a link between an article trashing Donald Trump and another candidate’s (be they Republican or Democrat) campaign? Does that article debunking climate change have funding from the fossil fuel industry? These are questions that need to be asked, and not just if it disagrees with your worldview. Above all, don’t be too stubborn to seek out opposing viewpoints. Read an article from The Blaze about Bernie Sanders. Read an article from The Daily Kos about Donald Trump. Watch Fox News and MSNBC (okay, maybe ignore those two…). You can always learn more, and you never know – an opposing viewpoint may change your mind or further bolster your existing opinion. Remember: No one ideology has a monopoly on the truth. -JG

WORDS
FROM
WHITNEY by Whitney Patterson
Don't be so Hard on Yourself "Mistakes are always forgivable if one has the courage to admit them." - Bruce Lee No one on this entire planet is perfect, although the desperate pursuit is always there, the pressure ingrained in our minds from birth. We're taught that only x plus y equals success, to adhere to this litmus test of how we should live our lives. Schooling, career choices, relationships, money, how we raise our children - it's a vicious cycle, constantly ignoring our spirituality while we mow down the "American Dream." And by spirituality, I don't necessarily mean religion. I'm talking about meditation, self-love, acceptance, being grounded, and how we treat one another without expectations of reciprocation or accolades. It's difficult sometimes to balance these things, especially when it comes to relationships. Everyone wants to be loved, accepted, and to be seen in a positive light, but here we are, just being human. I've found myself run down in the past year - it's been an unchained rollercoaster, and although I've made mistakes, allowed myself to be hurt by the actions of others that are ultimately reflections of their own pain, I've done the same. It's sometimes easier to pretend that we are always correct rather than admit, 'Hey, I f-ed up. I'm sorry,' and it's even easier to avoid that confrontation altogether. I've been accused many times in my life of being "unapproachable" or "difficult to talk to" because I've never felt the need to sugarcoat things and I'd rather just sit down and quash whatever needs to be addressed. I don't always get the outcome I'd prefer, but I'm also willing to forgive, try again, and eventually, if need be for my own peace, to walk away. But personally, I'd rather risk the discomfort of facing my mistake or expressing my feelings than let it eat away at a chance of redemption. Life is too damn short. A great friend once shared this reflection piece with me: How can I learn to see this perceived curse as a blessing? How can I grow from here? What is life trying to teach me? What does my soul want the rest of its journey to look like? How am I being invited to transform? Don't be so hard on yourself, say how you feel, remind others of what they mean to you, and know when to let go. Only you can live your own life - just remember that everyone else is out there trying to live theirs, too. Signed, Whitney Patterson, who is not Oprah

10 Cloverfield Lane (PG-13) Paramount Pictures
Think of the absolute worst day of your life. Bad, huh? Now imagine waking up in a concrete room, chained to a wall with IVs in your arm and no way to escape… only to find out that John Goodman is holding you captive. This is everyone’s worst nightmare. Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), wakes up to this sight, along with a battered body and no recollection of what has happened. Soon her assumed kidnapper comes in to introduce himself as Howard, and to explain that he saved Michelle from a terrible car accident. Upon being released from her restraints, she quickly realizes that they are in an underground bunker. Howard (John Goodman) then explains that he created the bunker as a doomsday prep facility, and most importantly, that to his knowledge all of Earth is under chemical attack from an unknown invader. Everyone they know has died or is breathing in toxic air outside of their shelter.

Once free to roam the underground bunker that Howard has brought her to, Michelle is forced to find balance between her survivalist instincts and the apparent psychosis that comes with Howard’s generosity and accommodations. Despite being stuck between knowing the air above ground is poisonous and the underlying feeling that Howard is holding her hostage for his own weird familial needs, Michelle soon decides that she must escape by any means. After fighting her captor and fleeing the bunker, she rejoins the outside world only to quickly come face-to-face with the aliens that have attacked the entire planet. Filled with suspenseful plot twists and suspicious characters, 10 Cloverfield Lane kept me slightly confused and exceptionally captivated throughout the entire film. With an eerie, startling soundtrack to match the cinematography, this movie is as audibly thrilling as it is visually exciting. DVD R EVIEWS Experimenter (PG-13) Magnolia Pictures
“Human nature can be studied, but not escaped.” A dramatic biopic of Yale psychologist Stanley Milgram (Peter Sarsgaard, Garden State), Experimenter is an in-depth look into blind obedience and ethical consequences resulting from the research of human behavior. In 1961, Milgram and his colleagues tested men from varying demographics to observe their willingness to obey direction from an authority figure despite their comfort level with causing physical pain and stress to a stranger. The experiment coincided with the trial of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann, and the results were unexpected and controversial, leading to more research in other parts of the world with a similar outcome. The latter half of the film explores Milgram’s personal and professional life after the initial experiments, with a gripping performance by Sarsgaard portraying him as highly intelligent and dedicated, although somewhat arrogant and dispassionate toward his subjects and wife Alexandra, or “Sasha” (Winona Ryder). Often using an aside to interact with the audience, and facade walls to shift focus toward the characters’ conversations, writer/ director Michael Almereyda achieves intimacy despite the sterility of the subject matter. Provocative and uncomfortable, the question remains - why do people choose to follow even when they feel it is wrong to do so?
The Hallow (Not Rated) IFC Midnight
When British conservationist Adam Hitchens (Joseph Mawle, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) and his wife Clare (Bojana Novakovic, Drag Me to Hell) move to a remote rural area of Ireland with their infant son, the villagers are less than welcoming. While conducting research in the neighboring ancient forest, Adam stumbles across a dead animal in an abandoned dwelling that appears to have been killed by some sort of parasite. Meanwhile, Clare receives multiple warnings against entering the woods by an aggressive neighbor, and Adam returns home with samples... and much more. Unwelcome quickly turns to forceful demands, but the source may not just be angry neighbors wanting to protect the forest, leaving the Hitchens terrified and isolated. The superstitious folks in town might not be crazy after all - scary monsters and notso-nice sprites could be more than fairytales. A directorial debut for animator Corin Hardy, the film shows promising potential for future projects with bouts of heightened anxiety, never-ending visual stimulation, and impressive special effects. It ends with a hint of a sequel, which would be a good opportunity to explore the mythology surrounding The Hallow and its inhabitants. - Whitney Patterson

NEWS4U | MUSIC REVIEWS Weezer Weezer (The White Album) Atlantic, Crush The unfortunate thing about Weezer is their inability to live up to their debut and sophomore albums. For the sake of this review, let’s pretend those albums don’t exist. Instead, their career started in 2001 with The Green Album. The White Album is Weezer returning to their Green Album roots. Start to finish, the album is full of catchy pop rock tunes and ranks amongst their best work in the past 15 years.
M83 Junk Naïve, Mute From ambient, post-rock, and shoegaze to synth-rock and dance, M83 has covered a lot of different styles of music over the years. While frontman Anthony Gonzalez’s music is typically somewhat serious, Junk is anything but. With this foray into fun, M83 have created a dance album that ignores a lot of the band’s previous work and focuses more on having a good time. Lead single, “Do It, Try It” is a good representation of the album, but there’s not a lot of diversity here.
MUSIC Santigold 99¢ Atlantic Records I think it’s safe to say that we can go ahead and just expect a great album from Santigold every 4 years. After the midlevel success of Santogold and Master of My Make-Believe, it would have been easy to disappear into writing for others; instead, the former label rep/ punk rock singer and Philly native is back with unbridled swagger. She may be packaged for sale in cellophane on the cover, but she’s actually shopping you with a groovy shrug - it’s all about girl power and industrial burnout. “Can’t Get Enough of Myself” is sunny and fuzzy, paying tribute to influences like Aretha Franklin and Fela Kuti. Lyrics put celeb vanity on blast, including her own, even though hers is a tough sell - “all I wanna do is bottle it to sell/ cuz my brand does vainglorious much better for your health.”“Big Boss Big Time Business” is a Nigerianflavored, velvetine dismissal of men in power and bittersweet romantic musings make up “Chasing Shadows,” possibly the most in-depth track on the album, though brighter than “Before the Fire” - “Saw you when it all burned down/ That look was on your face/ Now you want to save this house/ Well it’s far too late.” From start to finish, it’s apparent that Santigold wears a lot of (fashionable) hats, all carefully chosen, shared with the world rather than stacked in boxes.
Gwen Stefani This is What the Truth Feels Like Interscope Frankie Cosmos Next Thing Bayonet In fewer than 30 minutes, Frankie Cosmos’ Next Thing hits you with 15 excellent pop songs. Frankie Cosmos is the stage name for the young singersongwriter Greta Kline (daughter of actor Kevin Kline) based out of New York City. Kline’s songs on Next Thing have an inherent simplicity, but this is never a bad thing when executed with her wit and tact. Next Thing’s brevity will have you replaying this album over and over. - Russell Finn

Since the nineties, we’ve grown up with Gwen Stefani, witnessing the transformation of a cornrowed teen from the ‘burbs of Orange County who performed with Sublime on small stages into a young woman struggling to grow within a band of massive popularity and all of the problems that come with success. After going solo in 2004, she popped out two albums with significant success, started clothing lines, made her acting debut, became a mother, and divorced Gavin Rossdale. However, her first solo album in ten years disappointingly hovers on the surface. The title might not be entirely honest - a self-proclaimed “break-up album,” it feels a little more like a “convince you I’ve moved on” album. Which is fine, but it’s lacking depth that springs from true heartbreak, and we all know she’s capable of giving us that. Regardless, there’s no denying the bubblegum quality with up-tempo beats, trap elements and one of the most distinguishable voices in modern music. After she spends most of it crooning to her new guy, voices minimal self-revelation and mild distaste for her ex, she finally busts out the big guns on “Loveable” - “Don’t you dare try to rush me/ I’m not ready for the fade/ I’m washing in the sorrow/ yeah that’s where I wanna bathe/ I’m practicing my problems/ I’m worshiping the pain.” Let it out, girl. We’ve missed you.
REVIEWS Deftones Gore Reprise After an assortment of production issues, addiction, and bassist Chi Cheng’s death in 2013, the genre-fluid yet decidedly metal band is back with their long-awaited and greatest album since White Pony. With frontman Chino Moreno on tour, much of the album was written by the rest of Deftones, continuing with Cheng’s replacement, Sergio Vega, on six-string bass, providing even more depth, and guest guitar from Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains. It’s been a winding road, but they’ve truly proven their ability to survive and thrive in a landscape that doesn’t tend to propagate their plethora of sounds, at least in the mainstream. “Prayers/Triangles” explores a delicate struggle between dark and light, a common theme with Deftones, both in composition and lyrically - “Godless demon awake, inside me/ There’s a force divine/ Terrorizing the angels I keep.” Carpenter absolutely destroys on “Hearts/Wires,” a sinister yet filmy track, brutally truthful in a way often unspoken, creeping and smashing and flowing, displaying the lack of label-heavy influence and ability to let it come naturally without timeline rushing. The grit and ambience of “Phantom Bride” with Cantrell on solo and Moreno’s teetering vocals make it the best song on the album. I am just... goddamn impressed, and maybe more surprised than I should be.

Parquet Courts Human Performance Rough Trade New York rockers Parquet Courts have been slowly winning me over since 2012’s Light Up Gold. Human Performance is the band’s third album and fifth release in the past three years, and I’m inclined to say it’s their most mature and best album. Sonically, the album sounds a lot like other Parquet Courts albums. The combination of punk, rock, an occasional country twang, and an almost always bored-todeath voice have dominated the Parquet Courts catalog, but they’ve never sounded so serious before. Human Performance finds the band successfully being sincere on several tracks without sounding overly sentimental (something it seems they actively try to avoid). Lyrically, Human Performance is very cohesive. Parquet Courts capture the mundane aspects of everyday life and how it can drive someone crazy. Opener “Dust” feels frantic and claustrophobic, but the characters in the subsequent songs refuse to leave their homes or invite anyone inside. By the time you get to closer “Already Dead,” we find the narrator has happily accepted his agoraphobic fate and let the dust consume him. Don’t let Parquet Courts lie dormant in your music library like I did. Human Performance will surely be declared one of the best rock albums of 2016, more than worthy of your attention. - Russell Finn
We haven’t heard a peep from dancing sprite Mya Harrison since Moodring, although she has several studio albums under her belt. This happens sometimes when artists run into issues with their labels and decide to fly solo. After launching her own record label, Planet 9, Harrison has released a few records on her own, obtaining wild success in Japan. Her newest venture is actually vintage, mixing old-school R&B and soul with modern hip-hop more authentically than her peers. Cutting ties with major labels seems to suit her, producing quality rather than quantity - Smoove Jones (also a nickname) is an illustrative title for this compilation. “Welcome to My World” makes it crystal clear that she still has that sweet, fluttery voice and will never put her name on a song that doesn’t make you want to dance. “Hold On” and “Elevator” are inspirational clappers, with a little breathless verse in the latter, but the slow jams take over on “Phya,” a track reminiscent of old school Janet Jackson. I’m six at a sleepover singing into a hairbrush during “One Man Woman” and the outro... I think maybe she came into her early popularity one or two decades too late - the 2000s didn’t deserve her. Drop-top summer vibes for days. - Whitney Patterson

NEWS4U | BEER REVIEWS SHOCK TOP LEMON SHANDY
Daniel Knight • 2.5 This beverage (it’s hard to call it a beer) pours a murky yellowish tan color and produces a foamy off-white head that quickly settles to a film on top of the beer. Its smell is of grain, ginger, spices, and artificial lemon aromas. The flavor is much the same with a medicinal lemon flavor. Generally, this is a pretty mediocre beer that has some very artificial lemony aromas and flavors. People who don’t really like beer that much will probably like this one. It doesn’t taste bad. It’s more like a soft drink than a beer though. It even has sugar in it. Paul Bragin • 3.25 A thick white head forms on this unfiltered wheat beer when poured into a wheat beer glass. The scent of lemon dominates the nose. The lemon flavor remains when drinking the beer and seems to mimic a lemon-lime soda with its intense sweetness. This beer will definitely gain some popularity in the hotter months of summer due to its light and refreshing qualities. Pair it with lemon desserts like lemon squares or lemon meringue pie. Jabez Martinez • 5 This is a hazy straw colored beer. It’s clean and crisp with just the right amount of lemon flavoring. Shock Top has put out various types of beer (the Pretzel beer for one), and I love this one. This is a good summer beer and with Shock Top, it’s easy on your wallet. It only has an ABV of 4.2%, but that’s ok if you are out enjoying the summer weather.
SIERRA NEVADA BEER CAMP IPA
Daniel Knight • 4 With the Beer Camp program, Sierra Nevada allows guest brewers to share the use of their brewhouse and collaborate on a recipe. Tropical IPA is one of them. It pours a clear, medium golden amber color, with three fingers of airy off-white head. It leaves a lot of lace as it disappears from the glass. The nose has a pungent hoppiness with bready malts and citrus hop notes as well. It’s pretty complex. The taste is especially nice. It’s fruity, tropical and earthy. There’s a light malt sweetness and toasted grain as it finishes. This is an excellent IPA. In spite of its hoppy IPA nature, it comes forward with a good flavor balance. Paul Bragin • 4 A decent white head tops this deep golden IPA. Pine and fruity hop notes present themselves before you bring the glass to your nose and become stronger when actually smelling the beer. The beer seems light on the tongue when drinking, but the finish contains a nice mix of the fruit and pine flavors. Hopheads will definitely want to try this. Pair it with spicy dishes, Asiago or Monterrey Jack cheese, or key lime pie. Jabez Martinez • 4.5 This beer is a light amber color with heavy carbonation; it’s also very sweet yet bitter. It has an ABV of 6.7% but it’s very crisp and light and doesn’t beat you to death like other IPAs can do. The fruit flavors balance this beer nicely.
GOOSE ISLAND PALE ALE
Daniel Knight • 3.5 This American pale ale pours clear with a light amber color and a fairly dense one finger white head. It has good retention which reduces to a small cap that lingers. The nose brings forward a good dose of bready malt as well as subdued floral and citrus hops. The taste is less hoppy than I’d like, but the balance between the bready malts and the hops is well done. It has a nice finish and would make a nice session brew for pale ale lovers. Goose Island has been brewing this one for several years now and I was hoping that it had evolved more. It’s still a nice ale, though. Paul Bragin • 4.25 A white head rests on top of a honey-colored beer. A nice balance of malt and hops fill the nose. The taste of the beer contains a lot of fruity hop tones, especially in the long finish. This beer could serve as an excellent choice for someone who tends to shy away from overlyhopped India Pale Ales. Pair this pale ale with classic dishes like barbecue, hamburgers or an aged Gouda cheese. Jabez Martinez • 3.5 This is a clear amber beer with decent carbonation. It has a nice light malt flavor with some citrus flavor added in. It’s just a little better than OK - I expected something a little more impressive from Goose Island. Overall, I’m just not carried away with the flavor, but it’s a solid beer nonetheless.

DOGFISH HEAD ROMANTIC CHEMISTRY
the smell, light citrus (the hops) along with understated hints of apricots. The hops are well-balanced by pale malts. Overall, this is a very respectable brew yet for an IPA it’s somewhat light in flavor. I wasn’t especially impressed. Paul Bragin • 4 A thick off-white head crowns this deep amber beer. Notes of fruit and pine dominate the scent profile. Carbonation hits the tongue first when sipping the beer, followed by fruit flavors from the mango used in the brewing process and ginger spice flavors in the finish. Fans of IPAs will definitely want to seek out this seasonal beer while it’s available. Pair it with chicken wings, seafood, fried foods and creamy desserts.
Daniel Knight • 3.5 Dogfish Head presents this brew as an IPA brewed with mangos and apricots. It pours up a clear medium copper color and minimal carbonation with a half finger head that reduces to a film and remains for a long time. There’s some lacing on the surface and a thin collar around the edge of the glass. The nose was very subtle for me. I might not have detected the mangos, apricots or ginger had I not been tipped off by the marketing. The taste follows
Jabez Martinez • 4.5 This is a copper-colored beer and you can smell the apricots right off the bat. I’m not a big fan of apricots but with the bitterness of the hops and the sweetness of the fruit, they equal each other out. This beer has an ABV of 7.2% which is nice. I didn’t think I was going to like this beer but was pleasantly surprised - it won me over.

NEWS4U | BEER REVIEWS BLUE MOON PILSNER
92 |
LEINENKUGEL IPL
Daniel Knight • 3 This is a Belgian-style pilsner brewed with mandarin orange. It pours clear and medium copper orange in color with an off-white foamy head which dissipates quickly. Its aroma is bready with a touch of hop - not bad. The taste shows a sweetness with light hops that present themselves at the finish, giving it a mildly dry finish. I didn’t detect mandarin orange in the flavor. All that said, this pilsner is more flavorful than your run-of-the-mill domestic pilsner.
Daniel Knight • 3.5 I think this is a relatively new genre - an India Pale Lager. It’s an interesting twist… I’ve had a few in the recent past. It pours a clear, rich copper orange with a one-finger, offwhite head that settles to a long lasting film. It smells mostly citrusy. Different hops than I’m accustomed to smelling. The flavor is big with grapefruit, other citrus, pine, toast, and grassy earthiness. The finish is hoppy and nice, if you’re in to that. This comes in as one of my favorites from this particular brewery.
Paul Bragin • 4.25 A thin white head forms on this beer when poured into a traditional pilsner glass. The scent of malt and orange peel control the nose. Malt flavors arrive first when drinking the beer. The finish contains a decent hop presence to balance it, as well as more orange peel notes. This beer might serve as a great introduction for a craft beer novice. Pair it with lighter dishes like fish tacos or chicken stir-fry.
Paul Bragin • 4 A medium white head rests on this deep copper colored lager. Hop scents dominate the nose, with pine coming through first, followed by citrus. The beer tastes crisp on the tongue at first, with the hop notes and pepper present in the long finish. Leinenkugel sells this lager year round in select markets, so hop lovers will want to try this one if they can find it. Pair it with salmon, trout or lemon cake.
Jabez Martinez • 4.5 This is a clear amber beer. I enjoyed the sweetness of its Belgian design and could taste the light flavor of mandarin orange. It also has a crisp finish to relate it to the pilsner group. I do find it shocking that it only has a 4.2% ABV. I thought it would be more but overall, a good, solid summer beer.
Jabez Martinez • 4 This beer pours a clear copper color. I could smell the floral hops, caramel malt, hint of herbs and a little pine. This beer is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. I could taste the caramel malt, floral hops, slight citrus hops and hint of pine just like what I smelled. Better than ok for sure.

Walter t he Wine Guy Enjoy a fine rosé? Liquor Locker’s resident expert has some tasty suggestions for the change of season
W
ell, May is finally here, the weather is getting warmer, we are starting to eat lighter, maybe even thinking about buying that new bathing suit. I can’t say much about the bathing suit, but I can tell you what I will be drinking now until the weather starts to get cooler, and that is rosé! I honestly think that the newfound affinity for this style of wine has opened up the possibilities for finding a wonderful wine at any price point that you want. If you like fruity and slightly sweet there is one for you, but if you want a light, bright, mineral-laden wine there is a wonderful one for you too! My tastes lean toward the light, dry wines that work with food (I was a Chef in my former life, and most of my wine purchases have a food in mind for them). But, I do know that there are quite a few of you who like the sweet or fruity styles. So for you I would recommend a wine from a sustainable winery from Oregon named Cardwell Vineyards. It is their Pinot Noir Rosé from their Willamette Valley property. The flavors are lush, with light notes of strawberries and raspberries, all with a slight amount of residual sugar that makes this wine fruity but not sticky sweet. It is the perfect wine for the person who likes sweet wine but really wants to reduce the sugar. I would have this wine with a light spinach salad with candied walnuts, sliced red onion, feta cheese, and fresh sliced strawberries tossed with raspberry vinaigrette. For the wine drinker who likes fruit, but doesn’t want it too fruity, I recommend a wine from the central/northern Rhone in France from Paul Jaboulet Aine Winery. It is their flagship Rhone wine called Parallele 45 Rosé. It is an ABSOLUTELY wonderful rosé, with subtle, fresh, tart red cherry notes, and very balanced crispness, with a wonderful clean finish. It’s reasonably priced and if you only had one choice this should be the one. I would serve this with grilled
Pork Chops with Cranberry Chutney, grilled summer squash, and Rice Pilaf. Rosé wines should not be confused with “Blush” wines, like White Zinfandel or White Merlot. Rosés are classic wines that have been produced in all wine regions for ages. In the Provence region of France there are producers that ONLY make rosés and have been for many years. My favorite from there is Chateau d’Esclans. It is pricey, so if you are not serious about your rosé, then you might want to pass on it for now, but in the next few years you will have to search this wine out and enjoy. According to the winery, the wine will age for up to 12 years. If I can control myself I may be able to test this (I still have a few bottles of the 2010 vintage in my own cellar). If you are looking for rosés we have them from all over the world, so I am sure there is one that fits your taste and is perfect for any occasion. Be open and available to these wines and let me know what you think. So, in closing, I would implore you to give these wines a try. I am going to try to have them in the stores for the entire summer, many I have purchased on pre-sales so when they run out you may need to expand your tastes and purchase a different one each visit! If you want me to write about a certain topic send me your thoughts at waltswine@hotmail.com, and if you are going to be at the Newburgh Wine Fest on May 21, I will be doing a lecture and tasting about rosés, but you have to have a ticket to the festival and the lectures (there will be two different talks at 1pm and 3pm) are first-come, first-served, and you have to have a ticket. There are 60 seats and I have been told that they fill up pretty fast. Hope to see you soon and if you see me in the stores, stop me and say Hi! WTWG
