The Birth of a Festival >> Readers, advertisers and friends of all sorts, For quite some time now, I, as well as many others, have been pining for Evansville to embrace and create a festival that holds within it the progressive, creative and musical spirit of many other festivals in the tri-state area. Not to say that Evansville doesn’t have its own brand of giant, jovial events such as the West Side Nut Club’s Fall Festival and the electrically-eccentric, suds-soaked Germania Maennerchor Volksfest that always please, but these festivals are ultimately shrines to food & beverage, not music. So, for those whose souls are sustained by sound, Parksfest is the sonic shot-to-the-heart we’ve been waiting for. Thanks to Alex Mourer and many others, Parksfest will make its debut this month in quaint Garvin Park and will feature local artists such as the HoneyVines, Factor Primo, Osiella, Gentlemen & Scholars, the Honey Roy Band and Troy Miller, as well as regional act 23 String Band. Along with the music, come local art, food vendors and activities for the kiddos. My levels of excitement and interest have reached the red and I wish to warmly congratulate all involved in making this event a reality. May Parksfest enjoy many years of success. We look forward to witnessing its growth into the maturity of festivals such as W.C. Handy and ROMP (and beyond).

In the same vein, this month also plays host to a fantastic music festival a short 45 minutes northeast of Evansville. The Ferdinand Folk Festival turns five and is celebrating with performances by singer-songwriter Hayes Carll, the Cold Stares, Miles Nielson & the Rusted Hearts, Andrea Davidson and many more, flanked by 75 food, artisan and environmental education booths. Switching gears, September is also filled with philanthropic events such as the massively successful Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, WHS (Warrick County Humane Society) Dogs & Suds, Bud’s Harley Davidson 2014 Pink Ribbon Benefit Ride and the Water for People Benefit Concert at the Victory Theatre. It is an honor to be a part of such a giving community. Speaking of the Victory, be sure to brush up on your chamber tunes and prepare for a few surprises along the way, as the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra kicks off their 2014-2015 Season. All of this, great interviews, this year’s last Best of Bar Guide and so much more, is inside 4U!

T

he EPO’s 2013-2014 “Silver Celebration” season honoring a quarter century under the direction of Maestro Alfred Savia was a huge success. For an encore, the area’s most accomplished orchestra invites you to “Experience the Phil” with a remarkably diverse series of concerts – from Beethoven to the Stones. Whether you love the classics or the pops, there’s something for everyone, culminating with a pulsepounding presentation of Disney Live in Concert: Pirates of the Caribbean in May. Other highlights include Mozart! (and Salieri), Peppermint Pops, Ultimate Glee Club and an opening night performance by the insanely talented PROJECT Trio. Combining elements of jazz, hip-hop and rock, this Brooklyn-based ensemble features a configuration of double bass, cello and flute. The set-up may be traditional, but PROJECT Trio’s sound and visual presentation are contemporary, a blast of pure energy. With over 80 millions views on Youtube, the ensemble has legions of worldwide fans, all wowed by their original compositions and inventive arrangements of iconic songs. On September 27, they’ll perform a mix of both at the Victory Theatre. PROJECT Trio’s Peter Seymour kindly spoke with News4U ahead of the show. News4U (N4U): What’s been the general reaction from classical purists to your non-traditional live presentation? Peter Seymour (PS): We were all raised as classical musicians – all three of us have had classical training. So while our shows are a bit wilder, I think it’s still that classical ideal. But we also try to bring the energy of a rock show into the concert hall and kind of fuse the two worlds together. It’s a brand new experience that’s engaging, exciting and truly fun – people love it.

8 | September 2014

N4U: The PROJECT Trio ensemble is such a visceral, visual experience. How difficult is it to capture that experience in the studio? PS: I completely agree that we’re a live act. But recording is a big part of the industry, a big way to get your music out there. So when recording our albums, we try to perform live in the studio, try to tape as full a take as possible regardless of the fact that most music nowadays is made with computers and pieced together. Hopefully, we can capture some of that live energy. N4U: Is there a discernible difference between playing “solo” PROJECT Trio shows and collaborating with an orchestra? PS: There’s not that big of a difference, believe it or not. We actually welcome the opportunity to work with an orchestra. I love the energy of having so many people on stage, and when you have a great maestro to work with like Alfred, you really have an opportunity to do something special. The main

difference is that we have to spend a few days rehearsing with the orchestra, getting to know the musicians – making it so that they can understand our language and our style. N4U: PROJECT Trio has quite a history of promoting music education. PS: Our education initiative is quite huge. We’ve performed for almost 300,000 students in the last eight years. Most recently, we just finished doing two summer camps that we run – one in New York City and one in Oregon for young musicians who are looking to expand their minds and get creative with their instruments. We’ll even do some things in Evansville when we come – some master classes with the youth orchestra and at the college. – Thomas Ellis The show starts at 7 p.m. The Victory Theatre is located at 600 Main St. For tickets, call 812-425-5050 or visit evansvillephilharmonic.org. t’s one of the most basic human needs: clean water. And yet, even with all the advancements of the modern world, a staggering number of people – primarily in poor countries – go without it, resulting in approximately 6,000 deaths daily from water-borne diseases. Water For People (WFP) wants to create a new normal, a world where everyone, no matter where they live, has access to clean, safe water, adequate sanitation facilities and basic health services. Since 1991, the nonprofit organization has been dedicated to finding long-term solutions to these most pressing issues – to educating and empowering the millions of people living in unhealthy conditions all over the world. But it takes money to make change, and WFP needs your support. In fact, you can make an impact right here in Evansville by purchasing a ticket to the ninth annual WFP benefit concert at the Victory Theatre on September 25. Headlined by famed

rocker Johnny Rivers with opener Little Moe and the Atomic Two-Tones, the show promises to be an energy-filled evening of music and goodwill. This event just keeps growing in popularity, peaking with last year’s sold-out Grass Roots / Buckinghams show that raised $63,000. Expectations are even higher for this year’s event featuring Johnny Rivers, creator of such seminal rock ‘n’ roll classics as “Secret Agent Man,” “The Seventh Son” and “Poor Side of Town.” – Thomas Ellis Doors open 6 p.m. The show starts at 7 p.m. The Victory Theatre is located at 600 Main St. Advance tickets are $25 ($35 at the door), available at ticketmaster.com and at the Ford Center box office. Burdette Bands, Barbeque & Brew Burdette Bands, Barbeque & Brew is scheduled from 1 p.m. – 8 p.m. The deadline for the barbeque competition is September 19. For more details on activities or to enter your BBQ team into competition, call 812-435-5602 or visit facebook.com/ burdettepark. Burdette Park is located at 5301 Nurrenbern Rd. in Evansville.

........................................................

There’s a good chance that you were one of the thousands of festival goers who packed into Burdette Park last year for a fantastic day of food, music and beer. If so, there’s an even better chance that you’re headed back on September 27 for one final “summer” celebration – and for good reason. Everyone who attended last year left with a big smile on their face and a full belly. Based on the overwhelmingly positive response to the inaugural event at the new Burdette Park Pavilion location, it’s a sure bet that the 2014 BBB&B will exceed all expectations. For starters, the line-up of musicians is worth the trip alone. The success of last year’s event has helped to attract some of the area’s most talented bands including the Honey Vines, Deja Blu 5, Dang Heathens and Ryan Rigdon & the Hi-Rize Hillbillies. It’s a perfect mix of styles to satisfy people of all ages and musical interests. But perhaps the biggest draw of all is the tasty barbeque on offer. Once again, teams will compete in a cook-off for a top prize of $600 in each of three categories: ribs, pulled pork and chicken. And you can join in the judging (it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it) by purchasing a $7 tasting cup and making the rounds to vote for the winner of the $300 People’s Choice Award. In addition, there will be festival style food vendors with a host of eats and treats available. – Thomas Ellis

Brass, Burgundy and blues jive at the 7th Annual Kenny Kent Lexus Jazz & Wine Festival on Saturday, September 20 from 4-11 p.m. Downtown Evansville will sway with the smooth sounds of jazz from three stages featuring 12 bands including Monte Skelton & Factor Primo, Blame the Radio, Deja Blu 5, After Hours, The Browne Sisters, Tom Drury Quartet, Big Al and the Philharmonicats, Carl Rodenberg & Tommy Stillwell and more. Raise a glass to the unlimited wine samples available from the region’s top vineyards, including Huber Winery, Winzerwald Winery, Monkey Hollow Winery, Turtle Run Winery and Windy Knoll Winery. “Having the event on Main Street is a draw in itself, [with] music everywhere and the crowd growing every year,” says Publicist & Marketing for the Jazz & Wine Festival Julie Mallory. “As fans enter the gates, they each receive a plastic goblet to use throughout the evening.” Admission to the festival includes access to the one-dayonly concert venues, free wine samples and tempting food and wine for purchase (by the glass or bottle). Patrons are invited to bring their own chairs, and space for lawn chairs is being set aside. In addition to the swing and spirits, foodies will appreciate the culinary fares offered by restaurants such as Acropolis, Bandana BBQ, Commonwealth Kitchen + Bar, Cavanaugh’s, Just Rennie’s Catering, Kanpai Sushi & Asian Bistro, Pacetre’s Bake & Brew and Riverside Cookery. Entering its 7th year, the festival’s celebration of jazz is produced by the Evansville Philharmonic Guild. “Proceeds fund opportunities for the orchestra to expand youth music education and community programming,” says Mallory. - Jaimie Humbert For tickets, please visit www.evansvillejazzfest.com or call (812) 425-5050. An Interview with Lead Vocalist Dwayne “Danglin” Anglin by Nick Durcholz

hile working in the refuse room of a U.S. naval battleship carving through the waters of many nations, a young man fell in love with music. Thanks to a need for focus in stressful times, a yearning to impact others in a positive way and a few rhyming friends, Dwayne “Danglin” Anglin’s passion reached the level of fouralarm. Little did he know that just under a decade later, he would be the lead singer of the most iconic reggae band of all time. His love and respect for said band that includes eight other extremely talented individuals, their audience, reggae and music in general, is very apparent. Danglin took a moment from the Wailers’ U.S. summer tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of their timeless album Legend, to speak with News4U. News4U (N4U): How did you originally get hooked up with the Wailers? Dwayne “Danglin” Anglin (DA): I joined the band in 2010. I released a single in Jamaica in 2009 that was very popular, and I got recommended to the management of the Wailers. They were looking for a new lead at the time. I was brought out to observe a few shows and then, I started singing two or three songs in two or three shows at the end of the tour. And I’ve been touring ever since. It’s truly a blessing, honor and a privilege for me. I was in the military. I was doing my job to defend America and earn my right to be an American citizen. So, I feel like I’ve always needed to do something that would impact a vast

majority of people, and not just me or my family members. And I feel like the military or law enforcement would’ve been my choice - but music is another way to do that - another medium of spreading love and spreading positive vibrations. N4U: Can you describe the feeling you get while playing live with a band that has over 100 years of musical experience? DA: It varies man, depending on the song and the atmosphere. It is always a new feeling. I love listening to the bass and the drums. I just really love the experience and really love listening to the words while I sing, and feeling the words – and feeling and seeing the reactions of the audience. You never really understand how much this music has impacted people until you see their faces while they’re listening to the words and singing along. You have to take it very seriously. N4U: How would you say your musical spirit meshes with the spirit of the Wailers? DA: They are on the same mission. I’ve done a lot of songs that are similar to what the Wailers have put out, because there is really nothing you can do that the Wailers haven’t already done. So, you just have to find your new energy, and put your personality into your writing and into your performances, and try to find melodies that will capture an audience and capture a mood. I try to write with relevance in mind, keeping in mind that if somebody listens to these songs 20 – 50 years from now – they will be able to relate to it. N4U: Could you pick one musician from the past – other than Bob Marley – who has truly inspired you? DA: This might seem odd, but I would have to say Notorious B.I.G. The reason I say that, is that at his funeral, in Brooklyn, when they were going through the funeral, they played one of Biggie’s songs… It was a time of mourning and there were hundreds of thousands of people on the street – I think “Hypnotize” was the song that came on – the entire place, the mood changed. It was like a party. It was a great feeling. And for me to watch that, and see how somebody can impact people – whether you believe in or like his music or not – he had a great impact on that community, and that’s all we need to do as musicians.

It may be a little bit of a drive from the Evansville area to Elberfeld, but if your destination is the Korner Inn, it’s well worth the trip. Though the building is new, the tradition remains. It’s still the same friendly restaurant and bar as before with weekend live entertainment from a wide range of talented singer-songwriters and bands as well as the Korner Inn’s much-loved lunch and daily drink specials. Metro Sports Center 5820 Metro Ave. Evansville, IN 47715 (812) 479-5425 Metrosportscenter.net

Attention soccer fanatics, parents and all would-be soccer players! Metro Sports Center has a new program for children, teenagers and adults to hone soccer skills the way the rest of the world does, just in time for back-to-school. Playing the beautiful game of soccer is developed through Futsal. As the balls in Futsal have less bounce, they tend to stay in play longer and promote close ball control. Slide tackles and excessive bodily contact is forbidden in the modified game, which results in fewer injuries. After playing in enclosed areas and learning how to think and react quickly, players find when they play the full game they react well under pressure, as well as develop creativity with the ball. Futsal quickly develops skills required for soccer: balance, motor ability, agility and coordination, ball mastery, accurate and quick passing and receiving, perception, insight and awareness. As Futsal is fast and action-packed, fitness is improved while learning and having fun. It is exciting, many goals are scored and the game is devoid of complex rules such as off side. It’s time to go hog wild in the fight against breast cancer. On September 14, Bud’s Harley Davidson will host the 2014 Pink Ribbon Benefit Ride to raise money for breast cancer research. Each year, thousands of bikers arrive at the shop on a Sunday morning to register before setting out on a nearly 100 mile ride that ends back in Evansville at the National Guard Armory on Division Street. As you can well imagine, the organization involved in corralling and directing such a huge number of bikes is quite staggering. So, hats off to the team at Bud’s as well as the local Harley Owners Group (River City HOG Chapter 1210). They all deserve a pat on their leather backs. But as complicated as the event may be to stage, the philosophy behind it (as so eloquently stated on one of the custom-designed shirts now available for purchase at the dealership) is very simple: Bud’s for Boobs. The funds generated each year reach nearly $20,000 and the hope is that the money keeps rolling in along with the bikes. So fire up your hog and show your support for breast cancer research on September 14. – Thomas Ellis

COOKING SPOTLIGHT Making the Most of Malbec with Liquor Locker

A

utumn is right around the corner. A time when the temperature begins to drop, the leaves begin to fall, and the sky begins to create a grayscale palette. I begin thinking of dinners that warm the body, and comfort the soul. Nothing brightens a cold, rainy day like slow roasted beef. The richness of braised and roasted beef brings a smile to my face. There is still one thing missing from the equation though. What wine will truly compliment the perfect dinner? When I think of beef, I automatically think red wine. While there are multitudes of delicious red wines that are worthy of being chosen, to me, nothing compliments the richness of beef like a hearty Malbec. Malbec is definitely a very approachable and perfect pairing of red meat. The Malbec grape is one of the six Bordeaux blends, but I want to concentrate on Argentinian Malbec. While not having the firm tannins of the old world variety, Argentinian Malbec is full and ripe of hearty attributes. Mendoza, Argentina is the crown jewel of Argentinian appellations. Nestled in the foothills of the Andes Mountains, the Mendoza region offers the perfect terroir for Malbec. Grown at altitudes between 2,800 and 5,000 feet, the grapes experience many weather conditions and broad temperature ranges. These conditions create a beautiful wine that explodes with flavor. The soil is sandy and has high clay concentrations. These geographic and climatic features lead to a wine ripe with expression and complexity. Known for its intense inky color, Malbec is typically very full-bodied with plenty of acidity and higher alcohol levels. Aromas of black fruit, coffee, vanilla, cocoa, black pepper, baking spice, strawberry and tobacco tease the olfactory senses. The inviting aromas lead to a wine ripe with flavors of pomegranate, plum, black cherry, blackberry, spice, dark chocolate, leather, tobacco and black currant. The medley of aromas and flavors add layers of complexity and firm, yet silky tannins. The firm tannins balance the richness of slow roasted beef. The dryness of the wine is smoothed out by the buttery, marbled beef. Malbec has the versatility and spice affinity to handle a stunning array of roasted beef combinations. The combination of mushrooms, roasted vegetables, potatoes, oregano, basil, garlic and thyme create a great starting point to mingle with Malbec. The richness of sauces made with beef stock, red wine, au jus of the beef, and garlic are tempered by the firmness of strong, yet silky tannins. The spice of the grapes dances a beautiful tango with sauces that explode with rich butteriness. A great Malbec will not break the budget either. Many highly rated Malbecs that exude all prior descriptions can

be found between the $10 - $18 ranges. Argentina creates amazing wines that fit into every budget. Liquor Locker has a wonderful selection of great Argentinian Malbecs that are guaranteed to please. Feel free to email me at chedges@ liquor-locker.com with any questions dealing with wine and food pairings. – Chris Hedges

Slow Cooker Roast Beef with Red Wine Sauce Ingredients: 4 pounds boneless beef chuck, rump, or bottom round 2 tablespoons olive oil (preferably not extra-virgin **) 3 large carrots, peeled and chopped 2 medium onions, chopped 2 celery ribs, chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced 2 sprigs fresh thyme 1 bay leaf pinch of ground cloves 2 cups dry red wine 2 cups low-sodium beef broth 2 tablespoons cornstarch, dissolved in 1/4 cup water Directions: • Pat the meat dry with paper towel. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over mediumhigh heat. Add the beef and cook until nicely browned on all sides, about 10-15 minutes total. • Scatter the carrots, onion, celery, garlic, herbs, and cloves in a large slow cooker. Place the beef on top. • Pour the wine into the skillet and bring to a simmer, scraping the bottom of the pan to loosen the browned bits. Cook for 1 minute. • Pour the wine over the beef. Add the broth to the slow cooker and season with salt and pepper. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours, or until the beef is tender when pierced with a fork. • Remove the beef to a platter and keep warm. • Skim the fat from the liquids in the slow cooker. To make the sauce: • Strain the cooking liquid into a saucepan and discard the vegetables. Bring the liquid to a simmer. Add the cornstarch mixture and cook, stirring constantly, until smooth and slightly thickened, 2-5 minutes. Check seasonings and adjust as needed. • Slice the beef, top with sauce, and serve.

What ' s Cookin ‘

O'Brian's Sports Bar & Grill 1801 N Green River Rd Evansville, Indiana (812) 401-4630

S

ometime after turning 21, the night came when I stepped through the precarious blacked-out doors of O’Brian’s Sports Bar and Grill with much excitement, for the very first time. What I found behind those doors was an instantaneous state of relaxation and welcome. To this day, the feeling remains the same every time I go, and I hope it never ceases. O’ Brian’s is a calm and solid sandbar in the ultra-refined river of pomp and trend that is the east side. O’ Brian’s is like home; a pleasant escape. It brings you back down to earth whether you are having a few beers and with a friend, in the middle of an intense pool game, letting loose while listening to a live band on a Saturday night or enjoying some of their great pub grub. This is a no frills sports bar neatly segmented into two main sections: an elevated dining area and a sunken area that hosts the pool tables, darts and a smallish but well-placed stage. The décor is simple like the soul of the joint. It is safe to say that the centerpiece of O’Brian’s is its spacious billiards area populated with many quality tables. And rightfully so, from novice to shark, if you enjoy shooting a little pool and live on or near the east side, O’ Brian’s is your kind of place. Moreover, O’ Brian’s offers free pool on Tuesdays and free darts on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Now for the food…

First out of the kitchen was truly one of the best appetizers I have had recently: O’Brian’s Pizza Fries. The idea is self-explanatory, take two of the best treats in the culinary world and combine them. Was it as stupendous as it sounds? Absolutely. The smell of the fresh mozzarella mingling with golden-fried surface of the fries was intoxicating. The taste reminded me of potato pizza, but with more concentrated and pure flavors. I would definitely advise gracious use of the marinara sauce as well. Perhaps most noticeably, it was great that this dish was not very heavy on my stomach either. A simple and vastly tasty appetizer that should not be ignored! Next up was the Philly Flat Melt. A straight-forward, gyro-esque sammy with onions, green peppers, mozzarella and roast beef. The pita bread was super soft and fluffy. The beef was at a perfect consistency with a wonderful mild smokiness. The beautifully-bronzed onions and green peppers keep the mouth entertained with a pleasant crunch. There was even a slight earthy flavor in the mix. A very filling and flavorful sandwich! • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

The third and last dish, I was familiar with thanks to our burger review in the May issue. The stats are as follows: a half-pound ground beef patty with Swiss cheese, handbreaded onion straws and chipotle aioli sauce. The tangy spicinessof the sauce radiates off the burger before a bite is taken. After a bite the sauce transforms, providing more of a smoky, slightly sweet taste. It wasn’t until a little while later that I could feel the effect of the spice. You just can’t beat a slow, low-to-moderate burn. The crispy hand-breaded onion straws provide an eye in the tender, savory storm. The buttery and semi-coarse Texas toast the burger is framed in takes the flavor to another level. A gooey, savory, spicy and crunchy monster of flavor! So, be sure to pay a visit to take a break from it all with fantastic food and some live music, darts or pool… And don’t forget a frosty fishbowl of brew! – Nick Durcholz

There’s a very special 13-year-old girl in the tristate who dreams of seeing the Ellen Degeneres Show in person; she also dreams of feeling good and being a normal girl, independent and carefree. But unlike most girls her age, Abigail Goerges is battling against a debilitating, deadly disease that primarily affects children and has no cure. Mitochondrial disease results from failure of the mitochondria – specialized compartments present in every cell of the body that create more than 90% of the energy needed to support growth and sustain life. For Abigail, simple, everyday activities quickly tire her out, making her dependent on a wheelchair. She is no longer able to attend “normal” school due to her chronic exhaustion and susceptibility to the common cold, a potential health risk due to Abigail’s fragile state. But even with all of the odds stacked against her, Abigail still maintains a sunny disposition; her positive attitude is an inspiration to everyone she meets. And the person she wants to meet more than any other is Ellen Degeneres. On Saturday, September 27, Backstage Bar & Grill will host “Cornhole for Abigail,” a benefit to raise awareness about Mitochondrial disease and help make Abigail’s California dream a reality. With our support, she can scratch off the top item on her bucket list. – Thomas Ellis The event starts at 2 p.m. Backstage Bar & Grill is located at 524 Main St. in Evansville.

Performer Dallas Storm shares that the group is a based out of Las Vegas, while he personally is based out of Seattle. According to Storm, the Hunks travel around to all 50 states in the US as well as sometimes traveling abroad. He shares that, “…anyone who comes to the show can expect an amazing performance, smoke, fire, lights, action, dancing, backflips, abs, arms, chest, shoulders, underwear, jokes and most importantly ME!!!!” He goes on to share that he has quite a few performances that he can do. His favorites are Vampire and Robocop Storm, who has been performing for six years, says, “The thing about the show people enjoy most is the overall seamless experience.” He continues to share that he got into the industry because when he was growing up, he was a really shy nerd. So, he sought out anything that could help him talk to girls, and he landed on stripping! Another performer Sinjyn comes all the way to the states from Germany. His background is a professional dancer and athlete. He is not only a featured performer, but he also choreographed the entire show. He shares that “…our routines are group and solo, but mine is dance and acrobatics. Our goal is to make every woman feel special while having a great night out.” – Nikki Davis Hunks The Show will take place on Thursday, September 18th at 8 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Backstage Bar & Grill is located at 524 Main Street, Downtown Evansville. Warrick Co. Humane Society Dogs & Suds Do your part to help a canine in need on October 4th with the 9th annual Dogs & Suds fundraiser, put on by the Warrick Humane Society (WHS). “It’s our largest fundraiser of the year,” says Lindsey Byers, Director of the Warrick County Humane Society. The event, which is being held in Newburgh at the Old Lock Dam from 2-10 p.m., features a 5K run/walk, another dog walk, a pet costume contest and live music all day. The music will be provided by local blues musicians. The 5K run/walk has no age divisions. It costs $20 before September 15 and $25 after September 15. A “Catch the Rabbit Kids Race” will be available for children to enjoy. It is a quarter to half mile run/walk on the Rivertown trial in Newburgh. In addition to the activities, there will be barbeque and other foods, as well as a beer garden. There is a $2 cover charge for the band area and each event has its own cost. Proceeds from the fundraiser help support the cost of running the shelter throughout the winter months. WHS is a no-kill shelter. “One area we’ve really tried to promote is ‘Tails on the Trail’ dog walk,” says Byers. This is the first year for “Tails on the Trail,” which begins at 6 p.m. It is a half mile walk on the Rivertown Trail. There is a $15 registration for the walk that includes a t-shirt with registration. There will be a chance for pet lovers to get a photograph with their beloved furry family member. Dogs and Suds will also feature adoptable pets. This is Byers sixth year being involved with the Dogs and Suds fundraiser. She says in previous years, WHS has raised as much as $12,000 and has had up to a thousand people in attendance. – Justin Law For more information, please visit warrickhumanesociety.org/Dogs_and_Suds.html or call (812) 858-1132.

Tony Trip

N

early two years ago, local tattoo artist Tony Trip approached Newburgh realtors about the possibility of opening a shop in the area. Not surprisingly, his inquiry was met with skepticism. But Trip persisted and his excellent reputation eventually convinced the owner of a building at 7575 Peachwood Drive off of State Route 261 to help make his creative vision a reality. After making some necessary renovations, Trip and fellow artists Money Mike and Travis T-Bone unveiled Unspoken Art Studio, the antithesis of a stereotypically cluttered tattoo shop. In fact, it’s more like walking into a hybrid dental office/art gallery. The floors are steam-cleaned, the walls are freshly painted and adorned with stunning designs by the guys and a 70 inch television stands tall in the corner of the main room. It all makes for a very comfortable, entirely safe and sanitary experience that especially appeals to an older clientele – which is totally fine with Trip. “I like tattooing people in the older age groups, because they’re more open-minded and they listen to my input,” he explains. “I’m able to open up my box of creativity and present the client with more options. It makes my job a lot easier when I’m not confined by somebody’s guidelines.” Trip’s “box of creativity” started filling up early in life, and it helped him cope with a challenging childhood. “When I was really young, I noticed that I could draw something on paper and people would have a reaction to it,” the 31-yearold says. “My mom was in the military, so we moved around a lot and I had to learn how to gain new friends. Art was always the way that I could break the ice – it was a good way to express myself.” Initially a sketch artist, Trip soon branched out into working with colored pencils, markers and charcoals, intent on improving his skills. But as Trip grew older and his talent grew exponentially, the small scale of his creations seemed more and more at odds with his

ambition. A move to a big city would jump-start a new artistic phase and eventually lead to bigger and better things. Toughing it out in Chicago, Trip became fascinated with graffiti. “It was taking over my life,” he says. “I wanted to get to the next highest place, to put whatever I was feeling at the time up on a wall or a billboard where everybody driving down that road would see it.” But while graffiti initially satisfied his grand ambitions, Trip soon became disillusioned by its inevitably temporary nature. That’s when friend and mentor, Mike Smith, schooled him on a more permanent and lucrative art form: tattooing. Trip’s dad and step-dad were both amateur tattoo artists, so he knew the basics, but predictably, he immersed himself completely, quickly developing a signature style and expertise. From Chicago, Trip took a job at a tattoo shop in Fort Branch, Ind. before eventually following Smith to Evansville. After years of hard work on his craft and invaluable input from another brilliant local tattoo artist, Josh Sutton of Sutton Tattoo Company, he took the plunge and opened Unspoken Art Studio in Newburgh. The response has been fantastic. “We had a lot of support right from the beginning from people that had followed me from when I first got to Evansville – everybody was really excited for this shop to open up.” – Thomas Ellis Unspoken Art Studio is the first shop to come out with its own aftercare product line, ZEN Skin Remedy. They also do great work for the military. Visit the shop to learn more. You may also visit them online at unspokenartstudio. com or call 812-589-7380.

soundboard The Honey Vines

I

f there’s one band in the tri-state that epitomizes the organic process of music-making, it’s the Honey Vines. For members Melanie Bozsa and Andrea Wirth, the progression from formation to performance and now to the studio has been entirely natural. The richly melodic singersongwriters are currently assembling an album of original material with no timetable for release, an approach completely in sync with the Honey Vines ethos. Rather than rush to get the music out, the duo intends to let the process play out organically – just like the first time the two met. Three years ago, local music scene veteran Wirth was hosting an open mic night at Lamasco Bar & Grill – a long way from her days growing up in Oakland City when the prospect of being on stage gripped her with fear. On that particular evening, there was a new face in the crowd, a very talented singer who, like Wirth, initially struggled with shyness. “I’ll never forget when Melanie came in that night,” Wirth says. “It was the first time she’d ever performed in public. Everyone in the bar stopped when she started playing and was like, ‘who’s this?’ She was very natural, very real.” Post-show, the two musicians compared influences including Sheryl Crow and Grace Potter. “We quickly discovered that we had the same tastes – a little bit of a bluesy vibe and folk mixed in and then just all the classic tunes, too,” Bozsa explains.

Bozsa quickly got hooked on the thrill of live performance and became a regular at Wirth’s open mic nights. Slowly but surely, the Honey Vines concept took shape. “We ended up transitioning to Club Royale (now Pistons) and Andrea gradually worked me into her set,” Bozsa says. “We weren’t officially the Honey Vines yet, but it evolved into that.” The collaboration was never forced, but once the two locked in, it took flight. “We hit the ground running because I already had a full schedule – we were playing about three nights a week,” Wirth explains. “It was very easy to switch my shows to Honey Vines shows, and I think people really enjoyed the difference. We love to do harmonies, and our sound is sweeter, softer and a little bit more message-oriented.” One particular message is directed to all the kids out there: get involved in music. And it’s not just lip service. Bozsa and Wirth teach beginning guitar lessons in their Newburgh studio with a focus on songwriting and exploring the creative side of music. Considering the pair’s remarkable patience and organic approach to their own creative endeavors, few people in the area are more qualified to do so (it’s worth noting that Bozsa is a grade school teacher by day). It’s surprising that Bozsa and Wirth even find the time to pay it forward – such is the demand for the Honey Vines. In September alone, the duo has been tapped to play numerous festivals, including Animalpalooza, Burdette Bands, Barbeque & Brew, Music on the Hill and Parks Fest. Their family-friendly, positive sets may be a perfect fit for high-profile, heavilyattended events, but it still comes down to talent – and those honey-coated harmonies. Every time the duo plays, it’s just like that night three years ago at Lamasco; everyone stops what they’re doing and just listens. For two singers who were once so shy, the success of the Honey Vines is especially sweet. – Thomas Ellis Follow the Honey Vines on Facebook.

Ratings are given from 1-5. “5” is the best rating a reviewer can give, meaning they were very pleased with the beer and would strongly recommend it. “1” is the lowest rating a reviewer can give, meaning they did not enjoy the beer at all.

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 5 Liquor Locker locations.

www.Liquor-Locker.com

Arcadia Ales Hopmouth

Schlafly Raspberry Hefeweizen

Magic Hat Elder Betty

Daniel Knight • 4 Here’s a Double IPA (often referred to as imperial). This breed of ale is usually in the 7-10% ABV range and a designated driver is recommended. Hopmouth pours up a cloudy dark copper color with a pretty frothy beige head. The head sticks around for a long time and there’s plenty of lacing as well. The nose is surprisingly sweet with a citrus twang as well. The flavor is remarkably smooth and full bodied an impressive balance of malts and hoppiness. The pine and orange/citrus hop boost is welcome and flavorful. All said, Hopmouth is a solid ale, very drinkable and not overly bitter.

Daniel Knight • 3 Here we go again. Another flavored wheat beer. This one poured up very different looking. It started very light in color, like pink lemonade, with an effervescent character like I’d not seen before. It settled out a darker, still orangey-pink color and maintained it’s cloudy appearance. It’s scent is mild and what’s there is mostly raspberry. Schlafly tells us that unlike some others their flavor is added via a purée during the fermentation process. I did appreciate it’s flavor more than the other beer reviewed this month in the same genre but again judge the flavor to be weak. With nothing especially wrong with it’s flavor I can imagine many enjoying it on a hot summer day.

offering. I didn’t care for the raspberry flavor. I actually didn’t taste it originally and didn’t notice it on the bottle when I first looked at it. It also seemed a little sour to me. This one just seemed a little average.

Paul Bragin • 2.5 This beer forms an almost non-existent white head, and it evaporates almost immediately. What remains is a deep, amber-colored beer. The scent contains the overwhelming presence of raspberry with a faint hint of wheat on the end. The taste also reflects the presence of raspberry from the raspberry puree the brewery uses in fermenting the beer. This summer seasonal beer might pair well with fruity desserts featuring raspberries, citrus fruits or other berries.

Paul Bragin • 3 No head formed on this beer when poured into a glass, but a few bubbles made their way to the top of the glass. The golden beer contains almost equal scents of wheat and what one would assume to be elderberries, although the elderberry notes seem to come to the foreground. The taste of elderberries hits the tongue first, but the wheat notes come through on the finish. This summer seasonal is interesting.

Jabez Martinez • 3

This is a hazy amber colored beer. I have never had an elderberry or any derivative, but I would say it tasted like a light blueberry. The berry flavor was very subtle. I liked the

Paul Bragin • 4 A thin white head crowns this India Pale Ale. A dark brown beer lies beneath it with a very strong hop presence in the scent. The hop scent seems to have both citrus as well as pine. The hop flavors remain while tasting the beer with the pine notes controlling the finish. Hopheads will want to try this specialty beer. Pair it with spicy foods or blue cheese to bring out the flavors. Jabez Martinez • 4

The hopped-up beers are finally getting to me. I actually liked this one. It had a dark amber color to it and a nice hoppy aroma. I could taste the hops, but they weren’t hitting you over the head with their flavor. This beer also had a creamy finish which was really good. I also liked the 8% ABV. Follow us on twitter @

This beer had a yeasty smell and looked like your average cloudy wheat. I am a big Schlafly fan, but this was not their best

Daniel Knight • 2.5 First off, I have to admit that the idea of a flavored wheat beer doesn’t particularly excite me. It pours up cloudy with a medium copper color and a one finger head that quickly fades away. The aroma is mild, fruity and bready. The flavor has a bready maltiness and a mildly fruity elderberry touch. Overall the flavor is somewhat weak and artificial. Especially the aftertaste. As usual, some folks will thoroughly enjoy this brew. That’s why they make all of these varieties of beer.

Goose Island Oktoberfest

wheat flavor in this beer and usually like other beers Magic Hat makes. I was not sure what to expect, and was pleasantly surprised.

Daniel Knight • 4 It’s that time of year again. Oktoberfest beers have their own unique characteristics. Goose Islands 2014 variation pours a somewhat cloudy rust color with a moderate creamy beige head that shrinks a bit but never completely fades away. The aroma is

grainy and lightly sweet, mild but pleasant smelling. It’s taste is light with malty notes, caramel, bread, light fruit and biscuits. It’s not as malty as expected for a marzen and although no where near what I would call hoppy has more of a balancing hop trait. I like this one. It’s very drinkable and reminds me that fall is on it’s way.

Random Beer Facts! 1.) A Beer Wave of 388,000 Gallons (or 1.4m L) flooded London in 1814 after a huge vat ruptured.

Paul Bragin • 4 A thick, cream-colored head tops this beer and never completely disappears when poured into a beer stein. The beer under it is a deep, golden-red color, fitting since this is a fall seasonal beer. Notes of malt dominate the nose, with a slight hop bitterness that is also present. Pair with sausage for an authentic German experience.

2.) Amsterdam pays alcoholics in beer to clean streets: 5 cans of beer for a day’s work, plus €10 and tobacco.

Jabez Martinez • 4.5

5.) Slugs like beer.

This was a dark amber beer and glad to see Goose Island put it out. It had the sweet apricot and toffee flavors that you see in some Oktoberfest beers. It does have a 6.4% ABV which is a little higher than your average beer. Once again, Goose Island didn’t let me down.

3.) Cenosillicaphobia is the fear of an empty beer glass. 4.) George Washington had his own brewhouse on the grounds of Mount Vernon. http://www.factslides.com/s-Beer

Youth First Inc. Communities That

Care & The Truth Is… Youth First, Inc., a local non-profit organization is devoted to strengthening youth and families and has been coordinating Communities that Care coalitions in Warrick, Gibson and Posey Counties. Communities That Care is part of an initiative to engage community members in the prevention of substance abuse, juvenile delinquency, teen pregnancy, violence and behavioral health issues. Working with area school corporations and other non-profits, the group is addressing several concerns related to underage drinking. One strategy included is Strengthening Families, an evidence-based program for families with children ages three to 14. This evening program helps strengthen the bonds between parent and child, improves family relationships and increases children’s social and life skills. Another strategy included is Family Connections, which is for families with youths ages 14-18 who are in trouble at school or referred by the courts due to problem behaviors. Yet another strategy included is Project ALERT, which takes place during the school day for 7th grade students. It helps youth learn ways to resist peer pressure and substance use. Through a campaign called “The Truth Is,” the coalition is also working to correct misperceptions about youth underage drinking. Messages will provide accurate information about what our youth really do and what they want to know from adults. Knowledge is power; and it creates the opportunity for teens to resist the pressures to drink. It also helps parents and the community support them. To learn more visit wcctcc.org and youthfirstinc.org.

Unique. Eclectic. Assorted. Miscellaneous. Just a few labels that Nicole Newmaster, 26, has heard in her journey called life. My husband is Josiah Newmaster, 28. Together, we enjoy adventures with our two playful daughters: Jaleena, three and Nivian, two. I, Nicole, have breathed dance as long as I have had lungs, and plan to continue until the last breath leaves my body. I have instructed fitness classes at Tri-State Athletic Club, University of Southern Indiana, University of Evansville and more. I have performed in The International Bazaar consecutively for three years at University of Evansville. Dancing is a way of life. Hip-hop, ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical and even belly-dancing encompass all of my fancy footwork and hipshaking abilities. I am about freestyle. After an overseas voyage to Dubai, U.A.E. and literally escaping in the middle of the night from a power hungry and manipulative boss, my husband and I returned to Evansville with a new perspective and greater appreciation for cornfields and public displays of affection, both which cannot be done in Dubai. Josiah and I have been married five years; and have moved twelve times. Our homes have been construction zones for 3-6 months, then turned around and sold, only to start all over again. It has been a crazy time. It has also been wonderfully challenging and rewarding. All this movement of the body would ordinarily be enough for a 5 foot, 5 inch girl, born in Colorado… But no, not at all. I have published two children’s books for ages 3-5 called Andy and Armadillio are Astronauts and Brittney and Beario Become Ballerinas from my alphabet series. My husband and I have also co-authored a teen fiction novel about guardian angels and the battle each of them fight for. This book will be released on January 1, 2015. A full length movie will be submitted and available to view in the CFDb Film Festival January 1, 2016. I am always on the go and value time as a true gift, filling each minute purposefully and profoundly. Check out my website at www.jnnewmaster.com.

LOCAL BAND SPOTLI G HT The Unu sual Suspects ABOUT THE BAND: We are a 5-piece classic rock band from Evansville. The band was originally formed in 2011. However, most of the members have been playing music for over 20 years. The Unusual Suspects are Sal Aliotta (keyboards), Joe Birkhead (bass), Bob Koch (drums), Curt Muntzer (lead guitar) and Dave Waller (guitar and lead vocals). The original band began jamming at the photo studio of our former lead guitar player, John Miller. We will always consider John part of the band, regardless of whether or not he’s on stage with us. WHAT THEY COVER / DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE: We play popular songs from the 60's, 70's and 80's covering groups like The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Tommy James & The Shondells, The Beatles, T. Rex, The Who, Joe Cocker, Del Shannon and many more. THEIR INFLUENCES: We were greatly influenced by music from the British Invasion. That doesn’t mean just British groups, but the whole array of great bands and songs from that era. WHERE YOU CAN CATCH THEIR PERFORMANCES: The band is especially looking forward to performing for the first time at this year’s West Side Nut Club Fall Festival (on Friday evening). cd reviews Midge Ure Fragile Hypertension

Midge Ure really needs no introduction – except in the U.S., that is. Despite cowriting several massive European hits for Visage in the late 70s and having fronted the more commercially successful version of Ultravox in the early 80s, he’s relegated to cult status here. Even Ure’s involvement in the production and writing of Band Aid’s huge charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas” is largely unknown. So, it’s nice to see him back with a new solo release and a current slot on the Retro Futura Tour playing alongside fellow new wave stalwarts Howard Jones, Tom Bailey and others across the U.S. Fragile, as it turns out, is a pretty apt description of Fragile. The vocals are often hushed, the synth-based music is delicate with melodies that err just on this side of pretty and the lyrics – as heard on opener “I Survived,” for example – speak of spiritual crises. “Dark, Dark Night” finds Ure nearly whispering his phased-out words, lulling the listener into complacency before finally dropping the beat and reintroducing his famously powerful voice. Anthem-free till the end, Fragile leaves on a cautionary note; the title track gives fair warning to anyone who chooses to “live your life in Babylon.” Ure is less about hooks these days, more interested in mood and message.

Kix

Rock Your Face Off Loud & Proud Records Kix came to prominence in the late 80s at the height of the hair band era, briefly ruling the airwaves with the release of Blow My Fuse and the album’s biggest hit, “Don’t Close Your Eyes.” But after failing to chart high with either 1991’s Hot Wire or 1995’s $how Bu$ine$$, the band splintered. Several members dabbled in side projects over the next decade before reforming Kix in 2003 – minus primary songwriter/bassist Donnie Purnell. Perhaps due to the loss of their creative leader, it took Kix the better part of another decade to secure a new record contract. Rock Your Face Off is the band’s seventh album, a blast of fiery guitars that recaptures the late 80s spirit. “Wheels in Motion” gets things off to a rocking start with speedy, staccato riffs and a breathlessly memorable chorus; the bass solo is an unexpected but pleasant surprise. A bluesy affair, “All the Right Things” harkens back to the sound that defined Kix – lyrically, too: “She does all the right things to me / I’m falling in love helplessly.” And it certainly helps that original vocalist Steve Whiteman still has the chops, in full evidence on the AC/DC –esque “Love Me with Your Top Down.” The double entendre at work is cheesy, sure, but it’s just what the fans want.

Honey Roy Band Family Self-Released

In The Valley Below It’s all about soul with the Honey Roy Band. Led by multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Roy Micah Carter, this supremely talented septet has been tearing it up at bars across the tri-state for a while now, motivating even the most determined non-dancers to get down. The band’s irrepressible grooves come courtesy of one of the area’s finest rhythm sections: veteran drummer Greg Tuley, percussionist Tim Mitchell and bassist/trumpeter/vocalist Jon Hyneman. Guitarist Bob Legate, saxophonist Roy Carter, Sr. and trumpeter Ray Vigurs round out the HRB assault, adding depth and impressive musicality to an already dynamic sound. It’s all captured in glorious urgency on Family. Over a classic 12 bar blues riff, vocalist Carter introduces himself on opening track, “Family,” intoning “I’m the one they call Honey Roy / I can always do my sweet thang.” Behind him, the band lays down a sugary beat with sharp solos; it all goes down smooth. His vocal delivery is pure silk on album standout “Can’t Leave It Alone,” an early seventies style jam with hints of Marvin Gaye. Another highlight, “Real Good Love” is musically buoyant, each band member stretching out, trading chops. But for all the boundless energy of these eight tracks, it may just be the emotional side of the album that registers most. The importance of family is more than evident in the lyrics, and it looms large.

The Tom Drury Quartet By George Self-Released

The Tom Drury Quartet has experience in spades. The four jazz musicians (Erick Scales, tenor sax; Mike Rodenberg, bass; Pat Moore, drums; Tom Drury, piano) have been involved in the local scene in myriad ways for years, including teaching music education both at the university level and privately. Aided and abetted by UE’s Paul Mattingly, By George represents the quartet’s first documented recording, brilliantly engineered at Studio 77 by Patrick Preston. Drury handles the bulk of the writing with the exception of a few standards; Moore, Rodenberg and Scales bring the swing. Together, they prove that experience is paramount. Scales lets loose on album opener “Thank You.” His sax playing here is ace, completely effortless and wholly vibrant. After a virtual tutorial on jazz soloing, Scales cedes the limelight to Moore whose flurry of drum rolls and fills is downright dizzying. The quartet slows the pace for the elegant “Footprints.” Drury’s dreamy chord progressions and sleight of hand piano are underpinned by Rodenberg’s fluid bass work bringing to mind a Billie Holiday-era late night jazz club. On “Eight is Great,” Moore deftly holds down a stuttering rhythm while Scales’ sax climbs the scales, notes whizzing by in euphoric blasts. By George is pure joy. Join the TDQ for their CD release party at the Bower-Suhrheinrich Foundation Gallery on September 4 at 6:30 p.m.

The Belt Caroline / Capitol

From the suspenders they wear in their photo shoots to the craft beer blog they keep on their website, Los Angeles duo In The Valley Below seem to be all too concerned with an image or an idea of what’s “cool.” But it’s working for them. They’re signed to a major label, and their single “Peaches” is number one on Sirius/ XMU’s chart. “Peaches” is a good song and a fair representation of the rest of The Belt, which is filled to the brim with catchy, fuzzed-out pop tunes. Out now, The Belt is a solid debut for this pop act.

The Last Bison VA Self-released

With a name like The Last Bison, of course there are going to be mandolins. There are going to be acoustic guitars too. And clean-cut vocals coming out of bearded lead singers that are making “pretty” music about America. To make their album authentic, The Last Bison made sure they recorded VA in a cabin in The Great Dismal Swamp near their home in Chesapeake, Virginia. VA (pronounced Virginia of course), is predictable and unexciting, but still manages to offer exactly what it wants to.

Ace Frehley

Space Invader Entertainment One

From the first track to the last, this is a fun album. The opening title-track details the story of a space invader coming from a distant galaxy to “set you free.” Frehley is, for those unaware, talking about his Spaceman persona from his KISS days. “Time waits for no one - So take advantage of what you’ve got,” Frehley says in his first album in five years. That line rings true throughout Space Invader. Frehley is getting old, but he still knows how to rock. The album is corny, but Space Invader is filled with plenty of glam licks to keep KISS fans satisfied. – Russell Finn
