Anchored by original members Jack Blades (vocals/guitar), Brad Gillis (guitar) and Kelly Keagy (vocals/drums) as well as long-running keyboardist Eric Levy, the band has found new life in recent years, acquiring sought-after guitarist Keri Kelli to add some bite to 2017's excellent Don't Let Up and up the ante of their high-energy live show that only gets better with time.

Speaking of the newer albums, the band's most recent studio effort, 2017's Don't Let Up, really seemed to capture lightning in a bottle with an abundance of great guitar riffs and vocal melodies. Was there anything in particular that made the stars align for that release? Invincible: Legendary rock and roll couple celebrating 40 years of hits The fact that "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" is still ubiquitous in pop culture four decades on after its initial release (it's currently the soundtrack to an Applebee's commercial that seemingly runs every five minutes) should leave no doubt that Pat Benatar has made her mark. Along with husband and guitarist Neil Giraldo, the two have produced 40 years worth of unforgettable music and indelible chart hits, including the aforementioned "Hit Me..." plus "Heartbreaker," "Love is a Battlefield," "Shadows of the Night," You Better Run," "Promises in the Dark," "Invincible," "Treat Me Right" and the anthemic "We Belong" - the latter popping up in a particularly funny episode of NBC's The OfďŹ ce some years ago with the ditzy Kelly Kapoor serenading a visibly uncomfortable Ryan "The Temp" Howard. Again, Benatar's songs are everywhere. And there's good reason for her lasting impact. Quite unlike most pop singers today, Benatar possesses incredible vocal power that verges on operatic at times; most significantly, her voice is instantly recognizable. Not to mention she sings with conviction and incredible passion. Truth be told, Benatar - similar to Heart's Ann Wilson - approaches pop music with a rock and roll sensibility, matching the bite of Giraldo's sizzling guitar riffs effortlessly. It's the secret to 40 years of success in the music industry and a loyal fan base that can't get enough of those amazing melodies and edgy beats. For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre.com. The Victory is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville.

Star of Disgraceful Netflix special bringing unique comedic approach to Evansville Tom Segura is not your typical standup comedian. Rather, he's more like a droll storyteller who lulls you into a false sense of security...before dropping in the deadpan punchline. Actually, Segura doesn't really deliver punchlines, per se. That's not his style. They're more like extended jokes that totally make sense at the end. Like his highly amusing - if somewhat disturbing - retelling of a drug overdose from his college days. Somehow Segura makes a near death experience (he was in a coma, after all) sound hilarious. Hey, that's not easy to do. Then again, the 40-year-old father of two has been on the comedy circuit for nearly two decades now and has honed his craft down to a science. Point being that if you appreciate outside-the-box humor, Segura is your guy. And it goes without saying that a lot of people consider him their guy. Over the last six years, he's produced three very popular Netflix specials - Completely Normal (2014), Mostly Stories (2016) and Disgraceful (2018) - that have cemented his reputation as a one-off with a unique comedic sensibility. In addition, Segura is an actor and co-host of Your Mom's House, a podcast created with his wife Christina Pazsitsky which touches on current events and the inner workings of this very funny couple. HIGHLAND GAMES World record holder Elissa Harper highlights unique athletic competition that celebrates Scottish and Celtic culture AN GEL MOUNDS | A U GU S T 17
Sure, the Olympics are exciting and everybody loves to see athletes from around the world compete in the summer games, especially in track & field. What some of you may not know, however, is that there's an even more challenging athletic competition that takes place out on a local field every August - not just every four years: the SWIN Highland Games. Technically, this is just the second annual event, but it already feels like it's here to stay based on the reaction from last year's inaugural
How did you first get involved with the Highland Games? When I started throwing it was with track and field. all give each other help, figure out who's good to listen to, put in hours upon hours of training. Right now, I'm doing three hours a day. But the great thing about the Highland
Games is that if you want it to be a weekend thing where you just go and hang out with your friends, you can do that. If you want to break world records, it's attainable. How many competitions do you participate in each season? Have you dealt with many injuries? Typically, we'll compete from March or April through October-ish. I compete a lot - I do about 20 events. And yes, we get injured a lot. Most don't get hurt on the field. Training takes a lot of cardio and weightlifting which can cause injury. I had two surgeries last year. It's important to stay on top of the body, because the events are hard. But it's just part of the journey. That's what the off-season is for - repairing yourself. Is it possible to profit from the Highland Games or is it strictly something you do for personal satisfaction? I don't know if anybody actually gains anything from it, financially. But the level I'm at, I can get sponsors and I can get into competitions where there's prize money for the elite status. But mostly, it's for personal satisfaction. I mean, I see my fellow competitors at events more often than I see my family. *The Highland Games are presented by the Hadi Highlanders, a sub-group of the Hadi Shrine Temple that plays bagpipes and drums throughout the tri-state area for parades, celebrations, weddings, funerals and more. Monies from the event go to support both the Hadi Highlanders and the local Hadi Shrine Temple. For more info, visit hadihighlanders.com.

VANDERBURGH COUNTY FAIR VA NDER B U R G H 4 -H C ENTER | J U LY 2 2- 27
Country music stars Morgan Wallen and Riley Green headline six days of family-friendly fun For nearly a century, the Vanderburgh County fair has been a staple of the tri-state summer season, bringing friends and family together from all over the region for six days of non-stop fun. In addition to carnival rides and competitive cook-offs, this annual community gathering features everything from BKA cart racing, a car show, demolition derby and rodeo to pageants, comedy illusionists, goat shows and watermelon relays. It's a clichĂŠ, but it's true - there really is something for everyone at the Vanderburgh County Fair. And as always, there's a mid-week concert scheduled on the grandstand that's more than worth the price of admission. This year, country music stars Morgan Wallen and Riley Green will do the honor of entertaining the fair crowd, each bringing something special to the party. The former has recorded with Florida Georgia Line on the smash hit "Up Down" (70 million YouTube views) and also scored big with "Whiskey Glasses," an ode to getting over heartbreak with the help of a shot glass or two. The latter has released five EPs and received critical acclaim for his latest single, "In Love By Now." Together, these two up and coming country singers will make Hump Day feel more like a weekend hangout. And speaking of the weekend, there's all kinds of action on tap for the final two days of the fair, including the Saturday night demolition derby on the grandstand. Don't miss out on all the fun! Daily admission is $8; a season pass is $25. For the full event schedule, visit vanderburghcountyfair.com. The 4-H Center is located off of 41 North in Evansville.

VOLKSFEST 58 G E RMAN IA MAE NNE RC HOR | A U GU S T 1- 3
Cheers!: Annual celebration of Evansville's German heritage offers up three days of summer fun When the dog days of summer are in full swing and the temps are soaring, there's no better place to be than Germania Maennerchor's annual Volksfest. Why? Two words: cheap beer. Actually, the long-running event is just a heck of a lot of fun to be had over the course of a long weekend (one that starts on Thursday, that is), but you can't deny the allure of a more than fairly-priced cup of suds on a hot August afternoon or evening. And it's all in the name of celebrating Evansville's German heritage - a noble mission carried out yearly by a dedicated group of volunteers at Germania Maennerchor, the north side's respected social club that takes great pride in keeping us in touch with our city's history. In addition to drinks at a great price, you can enjoy delicious German food, including Germania's famous bratwursts, as well as live polka music that will have you up and out of your seat in no time. Consider arriving attired in your best lederhosen for maximum dancing ability. KENTUCKY BIKE RALLY UN ION COUN T Y FA I RGROU NDS JULY 1 8 -2 1
C OUN TRY MUS I C DU O T HE LA C S HE A DL INE T H E SUMMER ' S C RA Z I E S T LONG WE E KE ND Leave the kids at home, folks. The Kentucky Bike Rally is back and it’s just for the grown-ups, so get ready for a wild four day party highlighted by some incredible live music. Along with popular country duo The Lacs, this year's lineup includes Pennsylvania rockers Small Town Titans, post-grunge Texas outfit Blacktop Mojo, country singer Tyson Haynes, Alabama southern rockers Them Dirty Roses, and Madison, Kentucky guitar hero Boscoe France. But that’s just one part of the entertainment equation. The Kentucky Bike Rally also features a Tattoo Contest, Indoor Bike Games, Poker Runs (all money raised will be contributed to the Happy Feet foundation dedicated to providing over 3,000 disadvantaged children with shoes), Dirt Drag Races, performances from the Hollywood Knockouts Oil Wrestling & Dance Revue and much more. And of course, it wouldn’t be a bike rally without a parade of customized and detailed motorcycles from all over the tri-state with trophies up for grabs and bragging rights on the line. Every year, the bikes are the real stars of the show as owners proudly display all of the hard work that goes into maintaining a first class motorcycle. Another popular aspect of the Kentucky Bike Rally is the number of vendors in attendance every year selling everything bike-related, including parts and services. It’s a one-stop shop experience for bike lovers and a great opportunity to network and make new friends in the business. You must be 21+ to attend. The Union County Fairgrounds are located at 125 Pryor Blvd. in Sturgis, KY. For tickets and more info or to register as a vendor, visit kentuckybikerally.com.

IN THE KITCHEN
with Chef Amanda Hancock
There are four types of American barbecue: the Carolinas, Memphis, Kansas City and Texas. (And our friends even closer to home in Owensboro are making a name for themselves.) Each region has its own style of BBQ, but I prefer the more mustard and vinegar-based sauces. I will give you a couple of tips to make your meat tender before you start to grill or smoke it, but I’m really going to focus on sauces. If you’re going to smoke a pork butt, buy yourself a good meat injector and make a mix of apple cider vinegar, garlic powder and salt and pepper and inject it as much as you can. Then rub it in some dry ground mustard powder and some salt and pepper. My husband Dan and I usually smoke our pork over cherry wood. Don’t judge me for this next tip for brisket: soak it in pickle juice. It will give the brisket a nice, salty exterior and also tenderize it. (Don’t worry, it’s not going to take on the pickle flavor.) When smoking beef, Dan likes to use apple or hickory but there is an endless variety of wood chips to choose from. Both sauce recipes come from the Carolina region. The
CAROLINA BBQ SAUCES
Memphis style is more ketchup-based while Texas has a thick, sweet style of sauce and Kansas City has a style in the middle.
NORTH CAROLINA VINEGAR SAUCE Find more recipes on
Chef Amanda Hancock's website: www.chefamandahancock.com And in her book:
The Best is Yet to Come
INGREDIENTS: • • • • • • •
1 ½ cups apple cider vinegar 1 TBS sugar, to taste 1 TBS hot red pepper flakes 1 small onion, thinly sliced 1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and thinly sliced (optional) 2 tsp salt ¼ tsp freshly ground pepper
Mix all the ingredients well in a non-reactive bowl until the sugar and salt has dissolved. Adjust seasonings to taste. This sauce is best used the day it’s made.
CAROLINA MUSTARD BARBECUE SAUCE INGREDIENTS: • • • • •
½ cup prepared mustard of choice (I like a whole grain Dijon mustard or even a horseradish mustard) ½ cup honey ¼ cup firmly packed light brown sugar ¼ white distilled vinegar Salt and pepper to taste
Combine the mustard, honey, brown sugar, and vinegar into a non-reactive saucepan and whisk to mix. Bring gently to a simmer, uncovered over low heat for about 5 minutes, whisking from time to time. Remove from the heat and taste for seasoning and adjust as needed. Transfer to a serving bowl and serve warm. This sauce will store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for several weeks.

all manner of styles, from glistening 60s-era pop and doo wop ("Happiness" and "Without You") to haunting Nick Cave-esque piano ballads ("Sophia Annabelle") - even a free-form jazz exercise with Davis delivering a noir sermon of sorts from a smoky nightclub. Titled "Pastor Joe," this penultimate track reveals yet another side to the increasingly-confident singer - or another character, more accurately. Indeed, Red almost reads like a novel, with storytelling that rivals Tom Waits, most affectingly on "Marianne": "I miss my Marianne/We both know she ain't coming back again/I still wear my wedding ring/It's for her only that I sing." And while Davis has evolved significantly, the rest of the band matches him step for step. Evans' guitar work is equal parts fluid and frenetic, switching gears effortlessly, often mid-song as happens to wondrous effect on standout "Atlas, Bearer of the Heavens." What begins as a slow, meandering groove with smooth vocals, transitions to an increasingly amped-up musical digression that achieves complete lift-off when the fuzz pedal is fully engaged and Evans starts raining down distortion from on high over Baum's militaristic snare rolls and the pulsing bass of Tellez. This is Corduroy Orbison at their best, embodying the album's key lyric from "Adoration": "Before it goes dark, it begins to go red" - a menacing line that's appropriately followed by another barrage of relentless guitar. Most impressively, there's no letdown on Red. It stays on course to the end, managing to function as a cohesive piece of art rather than just a collection of disparate songs. And best of all, it just sounds fantastic. Tyner once again proves his mettle as a producer, capturing both the subtle and experimental sides of the band with the skill of a studio veteran. Red is released July 12 on all major streaming/online sites. For more info, follow Corduroy Orbison on Facebook.

with Marisa Patwa THE BOYS AND PENNYWORTH CONTINUE POPULAR TREND OF COMIC BOOK-BASED SHOWS
From Riverdale to The Avengers, comic books have made a huge comeback over the last few years on both the big and small screens. And this July, two new comic-inspired shows, The Boys and Pennyworth, will be hitting our favorite television stations and streaming services. The Boys is the brainchild of Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Eric Kripke, who are taking Darick Robertson and Garth Ennis’ comic book, and turning it into a dark-comedy for Amazon Prime Video, premiering on July 26. This superhero show has a killer cast including Chace Crawford (Gossip ( Girl) as The Deep, Antony Starr (American Gothic) as Homelander, Jessie T. Usher (Survivor's Remorse) as A-Train, Dominique McElligott (The ( Last Tycoon) as Queen Maeve and Erin Moriarty (Jessica Jones) Jones as Starlight. The show is purportedly blunt, graphic, hilarious, shocking, gruesome and unique, featuring a group of rowdy, blue-collar superheroes who are more selfish and self-indulgent than they are crime-fighting angels. Sounds like Hancock on steroids from the mind of stoners. I’m in. One of the big DC announcements this year was that Twilight’s Robert Pattinson will be taking over the role of Bruce Wayne - aka Batman - which has been played by the likes of Michael Keaton, George Clooney, Ben Affleck and Christian Bale. The dark superhero already has two shows centered around him, including Gotham,, which just ended its run on Fox. This popular show featured a young Wayne but focused more on Ben McKenzie's portrayal of detective James Gordon and his rise through the Gotham City Police Department. And then of course there is the CW’s Batgirl, set to air this fall and starring the sensational Ruby Rose. One of the other new shows set to explore this universe is Pennyworth,, which premieres on July 28 on Epix and delves into the life of Batman’s aloof butler, Alfred Pennyworth, popularized by Michael Caine in the Christopher Nolan-directed films. In this version, he's played by Jack Bannon, and works for Bruce’s billionaire father as an ex-special forces agent in 1960s London. Let the stylish hijinks ensue. So make sure to check out The Boys and Pennyworth this July to get your super-charged dose of comic book fun.

DARK AGES (SEMI-MONTHLY)
Billed as a high fantasy workplace comedy, Dark Ages is an audio drama about the ragtag team of employees attempting to keep the Rivercliffe Museum of Mostly Natural Histories profitable while dealing with the day-to-day problems of operating a museum in a fantasy world. Think Fawlty Towers by way of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series. By the end of episode one, uptight elven caretaker Marwood finds himself attempting to talk down a recently-revived Dark Lord demanding a weapon of his (currently displayed in the collection) be handed over so he may fulfill a prophecy and take over the world. You know, normal museum issues. darkagesshow.com
EVANSVILLE PODCAST (WEEKLY)
On paper, the Evansville Podcast is a podcast in which Jason Burton interviews movers and shakers in the local community. The interview episodes are good, don’t get me wrong, but currently Burton and a rotating series of guest hosts are piling into a car and bouncing around Evansville on Burger Quest, a delightfully debauched quest to find the best burger in Evansville. After a long hiatus, Burger Quest has returned with episode six, bringing the crew up to 66 burgers reviewed on-mic. Much like the secondhand excitement of local sports, there’s something engaging about listening to your most (and least) favorite burgers go on the chopping block (aka, a precariously-balanced cutting board in a moving car). evansvillepodcast.com
THOSE HAPPY PLACES (SEMI-MONTHLY)
Those Happy Places is a rare example of a theme park-focused podcast that goes beyond simply describing rides and discussing whether or not the hosts enjoyed them. Hosts Buddy and Alice choose a famous theme park attraction and analyze its theming and built-in story with the same scrutiny one would analyze a book. From the gendering of death in the Haunted Mansion to how Pirates of the Caribbean, save for some awkwardly inserted film references, remains a snapshot of 1950s pop culture norms, they tease out fascinating angles of rides one might think they were already intimately familiar with. thosehappyplaces.com
POTTERLESS (WEEKLY)
A rare pop culture podcast hosted by someone with no experience in the thing discussed, Potterless is host Mike Schubert’s journey through the Harry Potter novels - a series he’s never touched - chapter by chapter. Each episode covers one chapter in the book he’s currently up to with a rotating cast of co-hosts joining Mike to discuss things as they develop. Conspiracy theories are concocted, the guest hosts do their best not to spoil anything and Mike makes many wild predictions that turf out hard. After two years of hard work Mike is six chapters away from the end, making now the perfect time to catch up before the finale. potterlesspodcast.com

A century of patriotic service is something to be proud of, all right. That's the milestone the American Legion, chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919, has reached this year, celebrating 100 years of carrying out its noble mission. To this very day, the nation's largest wartime service organization remains "committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans." Newburgh's local branch of the American Legion, Kapperman Post #44, is celebrating in style with their annual Agnes & Elmer Bierstube, an all-day party that features a cornhole tourney plus live music by Legends (4 p.m.) and Retro Shock (7:30 p.m.) - and, as always, delicious food from Marx BBQ as well as hamburger and hotdog options. In addition, there will be lots of raffle items, half pots, a full bar and 25 cent beer! Come out and support their biggest fundraiser of the year!
The event runs from 1:30 p.m.-11:30 p.m. Admission is $10, meal is separate. Active military admission is free. Must be 21 to enter. The Newburgh American Legion Kapperman Post #44 is located at 711 State St. in Newburgh.

Annual fundraiser for area animal rescue promises delightful evening of dining, dessert and dancing Most tri-state animal lovers should be familiar with the Newburgh-based PAAWS pet adoption and pet rescue organization. But for those out of the loop, it's time to get acquainted with this fantastic group of people who have been making a difference in our community for two decades now through the fostering of animals and dedication to finding each and every one of them a forever home. In particular, PAAWS makes a special effort to care for the sick, wounded, neglected and abused animals - the hard cases that wouldn't stand much of a chance without their help. And it's all done on a volunteer basis with all resources going towards one common goal: improving the lives of the animals. THE WRITE STUFF
with Jonathan Gluff “Biden” Time (or “Let’s Hope Not”)
It could just be me, but it feels like the 2016 campaigns just ended yesterday. Maybe it’s the lingering distaste from that debacle, maybe it’s just denial, or maybe the tinfoil hat wearers are correct and we’re all in a simulation that somehow got stuck on fastforward. (I haven’t actually heard anyone seriously posit that last one, but give it time.) But between the 20+ Democratic hopefuls gearing up for the primaries and President Trump officially kicking off his reelection bid with his recent Orlando rally, the next election cycle is officially upon us, whether we like it or not. Analysis of the 2016 primaries has been done to death, particularly the Democrats. From social media astroturfing (a fancy name for organizations like Correct the Record employing agents posturing as “grassroots” organizers despite being paid by a candidate) to accusations of bribing the primary-voting free agents known as “superdelegates,” it can be hard to distill the “what ifs” and “whataboutisms” down to any actionable conclusion. But looking at the enduring popularity of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump as well as the disdain heaped upon Hillary Clinton, we can surmise one thing: Voters are fed up with The Establishment™. or Red Hats from the previous election and you’ll see what I mean. When supporters of Bernie or Trump, respectively, were asked why they liked their candidate, something to the effect of them being “political outsiders” or “against the establishment” was in nearly every answer. With that in mind, it’s mind-boggling that so many media outlets are pushing Joe Biden so hard. There are few candidates in recent memory that I can think of embodying a stereotypical politician as he. And I don’t even mean just because he’s an old white guy - I mean his hypocrisy (such as disparaging immigrants in closed-door donor speeches), his pandering, and his general sleaziness. He stands for nothing, and the “Creepy Uncle Joe” accusations seem to have some merit. And like pre-nomination HRC, I personally know no one who supports him (including very liberal friends whom I’ve seen calling for him to drop out). It’s far too early for me to make a call on which candidate I’m backing (although Tulsi Gabbard is my early favorite), but I certainly know who I won’t support. If the Dems want any chance of ousting Trump, it might behoove them to do the same.

TRI-STATE
POLITICS with Bryan Fox
ROBINSON LEAVES DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND WHAT THIS COULD MEAN IN NOVEMBER Connie Robinson has officially left the party. And this in turn, has shaken up Evansville politics. First elected in 1995, Robinson, who represents the heavily Democratic fourth ward, is believed to be the longest-serving councilman in the city's history. The ward leans so far left that Republicans in the most recent elections didn't dare put a candidate up against her for fear it might bring out more Democratic voters to the polls. What Robinson did isn't unprecedented. Dan McGinn, who represents the heavily Republican first ward, left the GOP in 2017. Keep in mind that neither Robinson nor McGinn are running for reelection this time. Both will serve the remaining parts of their terms as Independents. But Robinson's departure will have the more profound impact as she's been a fixture in Evansville politics for the past 25 years. McGinn has only served for a little more than 10 years and hasn't garnered the same sort of influence. Also, consider the reasons both gave for exiting their respected parties. Robinson
pretty much threw her entire party under the bus, calling the Democratic party "a party of intolerance." As for McGinn, he only cited one person as his reason for leaving: Vanderburgh County Chairman Wayne Parke. Anybody in GOP circles will tell you McGinn isn't the first politician or party activist who has had run-ins with Parke. You can almost consider it par for the course. Evansville Democrats just can't seem to catch a break this election cycle. From not being able to field a challenger to Mayor Winnecke, to the bitter primary in the second ward, to at-large councilman Jonathan Weaver making negative headlines, and now Robinson. Enthusiasm plays a big role in voter turnout. With no mayoral candidate and a laundry list of negative headlines, the Dems' chances of retaining city council seats will definitely be hindered. In fact, it's a distinct possibility there might be a GOP-controlled city council in 2020. As it stands right now, Democrats are riding a sinking ship and would be wise to cut their losses as much as they can between now and November.

What the world needs now is more parachute pants Mass murders, genocides, the ongoing threat of nuclear war...violence is the order of the day in 2019. And yet, there was a simpler time when disagreements were settled in a more diplomatic - and frankly, much more entertaining - manner. Allow me to revisit my eighth grade year at Plaza Park on Evansville's east side, circa 1983. Having officially become a teenager, I was looking to fit in with the cool crowd and that meant purchasing a pair of the hottest fashion item going: parachute pants. Mind you, this was right at the dawn of rap music; previews for the cult classic film Breakin' had us all poppin' and lockin' down the halls and in the cafeteria - the latter location serving as the meeting place for the Funkateers, the eight-man, egregiously uncoordinated breakdancing crew I joined shortly after going shopping. Anyhow, one day the Funkateers headed to Washington Square Mall to survey the scene and that's when it happened: we spotted a member of a rival crew, eventually cornering the poor kid on the second floor of Sears. While I nervously looked on, decked out in my new olive green parachute pants (held up by a leather belt), Funkateer Lawrence Barrett slowly and deliberately approached the enemy, seemingly ready to throw down...but instead began chest-popping and body-rocking for a good minute or two. Satisfied that the point was made, we turned and exited, leaving the kid completely unharmed. A little shaken, perhaps. Now that's how you settle a beef.

I AM MOTHER NETFLIX
I Am Mother starts with a question: Why are we even doing this? Why continue the human race if it seems so inevitable to fail? It all begins in a high tech isolation station grounded somewhere on Earth. There are no living humans on the station, but there are 63,000 human embryos and one artificially intelligent robot programmed to raise them when the time comes. The idea is interesting for a few reasons, not just for the initial what for quandary, but by the time we've settled into the ethics of prolonging human extinction, the plot takes a turn. Without spoiling too much more, the true beauty of this film is the detail that goes into developing the character behind the only child born on the station, Daughter. Played by Clara Rugaard, we see her grow into a curious young adult, guided by loneliness and the clumsy flaws that characterize us, the human race, as ultimately doomed. For a first film, it is surprisingly wrought. Grant Sputore has done his work, pulling from directors like Alex Garland, utilizing a small cast to maximize drama and character in order to build toward a crescendo. And boy does it come crashing down. There is a lot to take away from watching I Am Mother but throughout the film Sputore has put story and plot front and center. Pay attention, because there is a lot to be discovered. - John Thurgood
RIM OF THE WORLD NETFLIX
Rim of the World takes all the elements from your favorite childhood movies and boils them down into an irreverent display of CG and pyrotechnics at a camp somewhere near Los Angeles. Think Wet Hot American Summer meets The Goonies with a little bit of The Predator sprinkled in for conflict. The comedy is hit or miss. The main characters are tropes from previous movies: the nerd, who saves the day; the rich kid, who comes to understand what it means to be poor; the Asian kid, who is stereotypically good at fighting; the rough around the edges kid with a heart of gold - you get the idea. They're tasked with returning a key to its source, but along the way they meet trouble, both alien and human. One of the only redeeming qualities of this film is its pace. Things happen quickly. Once everything gets moving, there is so much to gawk at and make fun of that when it's finally over, it's hard to remember what actually happened, which in the end might be for the best. If nothing else, this is a great film to watch with a group of friends while playing cards or just killing time. It may not start a deep conversation, but it will surely inspire some heated trash-talk. - John Thurgood

P!NK Hurts 2B Human RCA Records I’ve been reviewing albums at News 4U for two years, so regular readers aren’t going to be shocked by this but I’m still going to say it: the new P!nk album is really good. She’s always been a running trend in music as far back as I can remember. If one says “I like P!nk” in a group of people under the age of 40 there’s a strong chance most of them will echo back something positive. Maybe not so far as to identify as fans, but they’ll enjoy her big hits and have listened to an album or two. Arriving less than two years after the excellent Beautiful Trauma, Hurts 2B Human keeps up the quality with hook-laden singles like the foot-stomping "Walk Me Home" and bouncy "Can We Pretend (feat. Cash Cash)" along with the subtle power of the contemplative title track which finds P!nk and Khalid trading emotional verses. Even country star Chris Stapleton makes an appearance on "Love Me Anyway," adding some real gravitas to the heart-wrenching chorus. It all makes for a strong collection of pop songs that consistently pleases. - Gavin Gadddis
CARLY RAE JEPSEN Dedicated 604/Schoolboy/Interscope
MILEY CYRUS She is Coming RCA Records It’s been a long time coming but finally, in the year of our Lord 2019, Miley Cyrus can release something without a plague of insufferable critics poring over every swear and adult reference as evidence to the smug claim “this is obviously Cyrus going for shock value to break out of her Disney Channel roots.” I had a fun time taking in She is Coming, but after discovering that it's the first of a trilogy of EPs, one has to question why it’s three separate bundles of six songs instead of a 10-12 song album. Five of the songs in this group are pretty darn good adult pop. Except for RuPaul’s… unfortunate presence on the album. "Cattitude" feels less like an actual song produced by professionals and more like a YouTube rap song from 2008 drafted purely for the sake of cross-promotion. The fact that it’s RuPaul and Cyrus together feels more important than the actual song’s quality. Closing one’s eyes while listening conjures up a cringe-worthy music video with tons of jump-cuts as they spit verses they wrote over a weekend in a shared Google Doc. Gavin Gaddis
JONAS BROTHERS Happiness Begins Republic Records
Sorry, pseudo hipsters, but no Jepsenhating meme you clog the internet with can change the fact that the "Call Me Maybe" singer's passion for music shines on every track of this album - which according to her, was narrowed down from over 200. In a 2017 interview with Entertainment Tonight Canada she teased that Dedicated would comprise “songs to clean your house to," quite possibly the most unexpected goal for an album I’ve ever heard that also makes complete sense as soon as you put it on.
I’ll be honest: I took on reviewing this album because I only knew of the Jonas Brothers as “that band of Disney kids.” Well, I actually said Nickelodeon only to be quickly and sternly corrected by my fiancé. The dangers of growing up without cable, I guess. I was expecting Happiness Begins to deliver an experience that would allow me to wax philosophical about a corporate-made band that has found its footing now that they’ve aged out of profitability for Disney as teen heartthrobs hammering out D-A-E-G chord progressions on electric guitars.
Dedicated is tailor-made to keep the listener pumped and ready to face the day. Not all songs hit that BPM sweet spot to make a good album for runners, but you better believe that a sink full of dishes will be washed and put away by the time you reach the irresistible hook of "Now That I Found You" - just three tracks in. Listening to Dedicated one can just feel dozens of listeners adding bangers like that and instant ear worms such as "Party For One" and "Too Much" to their pump-up jam playlists. - Gavin Gaddis
My cynicism blinded me to one small fact: the Jonas Brothers freaking slap. Yeah, three rich white straight guys aren’t going to be breaking any new ground as far as something to say in music any time soon, but the J-Bros deliver in every other respect. It’s not often music causes me to physically emote when listening, but my eyebrows went up within seconds of "Sucker." This isn’t adults emoting their Disney heyday, this is three good pop artists taking the time to make their first album in a decade sound good. In a way, Happiness Begins scratches all of the itches a great boy band album hits but with just enough traditional pop thrown in to distance itself from its Backstreet cousins. - Gavin Gaddis

LAMB OF GOD Ashes of the Wake (Reissue) Epic Records Despite their current elder statesmen status, Lamb of God were relatively obscure when their major-label debut, Ashes of the Wake Wake, released in 2004. 15 years later, they’ve reissued the album that brought them out of the Richmond, Virginia underground and into the mainstream (or at least as mainstream as hardcore-influenced metal can be). Blending the hardcore punk of Discharge, the groove metal of Pantera, and the complex riffery/shifting time signatures of Meshuggah, LoG perfected this mixture for Ashes. Chris Adler’s steady double-bass drumming lays the foundation for guitarists Mark Morton and Willie Adler’s finger-twisting riffs, while vocalist Randy Blythe’s scathing ruminations on the War on Terror are delivered with vocals that are never cleanly sung yet always clearly enunciated. These themes carry throughout the album, with every track condemning war, thenpresident George W. Bush, and/or lamenting our fallen soldiers sacrificed in the name of regime change and resource plundering. Whether you’ve followed these metallers since their days as Burn the Priest or are a new initiate, this reissue is a perfect reason to revisit a modern metalcore masterpiece or discover it for the first time. Jonathan Gluff
BIG THIEF U.F.O.F. 4AD I often think of trends in popular music and how they affect an album's significance. Some albums are made with immediacy to capitalize on the latest beat or most recent craze permeating through the airwaves and popular playlists. Then an album like U.F.O.F. comes out of nowhere and defies all trends, and I remember that great music is timeless and bound by no fad. Like their previous two albums, Big Thief’s third delivers a batch of warm folk-rock songs densely layered with singer/ songwriter Adrienne Lenker’s intimate musings on people and nature. Their style isn’t anything inherently new; you can hear elements of Fleetwood Mac in songs like “UFOF” and “Cattails” or Elliot Smith in the haunting jaunt of “Strange.” Make no mistake though, Big Thief’s sound is all their own - which, on U.F.O.F., is primarily careful and quaint. On the surface, it’s a pretty album of acoustic guitars and romantic songs, but on closer inspection every track is a masterful piece of art. Big Thief’s folk tunes are both sunshine and a calming hug, existing in an otherworldly realm. - Russ Finn
Blues with Bragin KING BEE & THE STINGERS Meet Me in Memphis Hive Talking Records Straight out of Bloomington, IN, King Bee & The Stingers lay down some serious roadhouse blues on Meet Me in Memphis. The album opens with “You’re All I Need,” a song that praises the singer’s lover. Ken Meadows’s bass line and Tom Clark’s horn section provide a ‘70s vibe. “Tattooed Love Girl,” co-written by lead singer Sarah Menefee, praises the confidence of a woman with a lot of ink. Mark Menefee’s harmonica playing in the middle of the track fits the song nicely. The harmonica continues to shine on “Half a Mind,” which recounts the struggle of whether or not to stay in a relationship. The slow waltz of the title track showcases Sarah's sultry vocals as she sings about reconciliation. “Leave This World” begins with acoustic Delta blues before switching to electric Chicago blues. The melancholy harmonica from Mark nicely contrasts Sarah's vocals about spreading love worldwide. “Buzz a While” sounds like both a modern blues song as well as something from a sock hop. Buddy Mitchell’s frantic drumming on “Devil Train” provides a nice ending to the album. - Paul Bragin
MEG WILLIAMS Take Me As I Am: The Muscle Shoals Sessions Nola Blue, Inc. Nashville's Meg Williams comes through Evansville on occasion to share her blues guitar prowess with a growing tri-state fan base. On Take Me As I Am, she proves why she's considered one of the best performers around with blistering guitar riffs and rocking tunes like “Tell Everybody,” with its call and response refrain, featuring great organ work from Clayton Ivey. “Shame” features funky guitar from Williams and bass from Bob Wray and discusses the inability to move on after a relationship. Dan Wecht’s rhythm guitar on “Played by the Blues” provides a nice foundation for Williams’ solo in the middle of the song. Elsewhere, “Sometimes I Need You Too” deals with a relationship where each person realizes they require the other partner during difficult times. Wecht’s slide guitar on the country-influenced “Take Me As I Am” fits nicely with the lyrics about a woman who wants acceptance from a lover. “Make a Move” features Williams singing about seeing a man across a bar, flirting from a distance, wanting him to approach her and expressing frustration at his reluctance. - Paul Bragin

I’ll be honest: I’m not a fan of the “pop-off the entire lid” design. It’s terrible to drink from and pours poorly. I hate complaining about the can because I really enjoy this one; I’ll be picking it up in the future. Not too sweet, not too hoppy - it’s exactly what an IPA should be. Those who dislike darker beers but want a little deviation from the standard macrobrew fare may find this a nice change of pace.
A thick white head rests on this IPA. Notes of citrus and pine from the hops control the scent profile. The initial tasting of the beer seems mild, but the hops return very quickly and remain in the finish while balancing out with some sweet malt. People who enjoy IPAs will want to drink this. Pair it with a variety of spicy cuisines like Mexican or Thai or a vintage Cheddar cheese.
This is a clear, straw-colored beer with a nice hoppy flavor that's not over the top like some other IPAs. Urban Chestnut has produced a number of good beers like the Lemon Radler - and all with the wide mouth opening can that comes in a pint. A solid IPA.

Despite a pretentious history (a band called Twin Peaks helped create this for Pitchfork Music Festival, I kid you not), it’s closer to PBR than an IPA. Given hipsterdom’s past obsession with that blue-collar brew, maybe that shouldn’t be a surprise. Regardless, this beer is a very barebones lager. No crazy notes of exotic fruit or chocolate - just heavy on the corn and light on the hops. Great for the straightforward beer drinker looking for a higher quality quaff.
A thick white head crowns this lager when poured into a traditional beer mug. Sweet malt scents control the nose. A burst of carbonation hits the tongue, followed by more malt and a slight hop bitterness in the long finish. The lower alcohol content makes this a good session beer and the carbonation lends itself to being an excellent choice during the summer. Pair it with a hamburger, hot dog or any number of foods at a cookout.
This is a clear, golden-colored beer. It's an average lager that comes across as though Goose Island is trying to make a mainstream beer like Bud or Miller Lite. To be honest, I expected more, because I usually enjoy Goose Island beers; however, I just wasn’t impressed by this one.

Dark-roasted coffee (Haitian, according to the brewery) is strongly present in this brew. If you pour it, be warned - while it may have the color and consistency of an ale, the coffee flavor overtakes everything else. But it’s far from a one-flavor pony. It finishes very smooth and clean with light caramel and buttery toffee notes. Deep, complex, and flavorful, it may not be for everyone, but it does what it does very well.
A generous white head tops this beer when poured into a traditional English pub glass. Coffee fills the nose without overpowering the beer. The coffee flavors continue with the first sip, but pack less of a punch than the scent thanks to the presence of sweet flavors from the bourbon barrel aging process. Drink this beer at breakfast or pair it with pork tenderloin or caramel desserts like pecan pie with vanilla ice cream.
This pours a clear amber color with good carbonation. I can smell a hint of coffee upon opening. I was a little apprehensive but the rich coffee flavor is smooth and creamy - something I would expect from a darker beer, but this cream ale hits the mark.

A thick off-white head forms on this pink shandy and stays for a long time. Berries fill the nose with scents reminiscent of jelly. The first sip of the beer boasts sweetness from the lemonade, followed by more berries. The low alcohol content makes this a decent choice during the hot summer months. Pair it with
barbecue, your favorite fruity dessert like strawberry shortcake or blueberry pie with vanilla ice cream or make a float.

This beer has a pink tint to it - a very berry beer. It's brewed with blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries and lemonade. This beer is really sweet but makes for a good summer beer. Granted, I can’t drink more than one or two but it's good in short runs.
