NEWS4U APRIL 2020 | SPECIAL FEATURE
SUPPORT LOCAL! During this unprecedented time in the tri-state, keep your neighborhood businesses in mind It somehow still doesn't seem real, but the incalculable impact of the Coronavirus has turned everyone's world upside down, threatening our health and safety and doing irreparable damage to the economy in the process. Those hit hardest - bar and restaurant owners who were forced to shut down to help contain the spread of the disease - are primarily hard-working, local people who have put in endless hours over the years to keep your favorite establishments up and running. It's heartbreaking to see so many of them suffering under the strain of this unprecedented situation; however, we can all pitch in by simply patronizing neighborhood businesses whenever possible - even if it means having to order food to go or for delivery. No one has a crystal ball, unfortunately, so who knows where this is all headed; however, we here at News 4U certainly hope that the imposed shutdown of tristate bars and restaurants has been lifted by the time the April issue of the magazine hits the streets. We owe our entire existence to the fine people who run these operations and support us month and month, year after year. We'd like to encourage everyone to do what they can to help keep heads above water - with the full understanding that we're all going through the same thing and everyone is hurting in some way or another, be it financially or otherwise. If we all stick together and keep our wits about us - and most importantly, are kind and courteous to one another - then we'll get through this in much better shape and pave the way for a faster recovery. Until then, stay safe, practice good hygiene and try not to get caught up in the wave of panic. And if you're looking for a way to take your mind off of everything, flip through this latest issue of News 4U. We'd sure appreciate it. Sincerely,

Especially back in the early days, my songs all seemed to come out as stories. And I'm still doing it. Yes, you're still doing it - most recently on your Beau Weevils side project.
Yeah, there's a song on there about...it's called "Mudcat" and it's a story about a guy - you know the story about Robert Johnson? The crossroads and all that? Well, this is a totally fictitious story about a guy that played with him - with Robert Johnson - and went through the same kind of experience. You know, it's about going past the crossroads and something comes floating up out of the swamp. I find that I still, to this day, a lot of times I'll start a guitar

riff or something and start thinking about a song and it will be in the form of a story with a beginning, a middle and end. Not always, but quite a bit. There's always been an abundance of energy in your music with plenty of twists and turns - as opposed to much of today's country music, which often seems incidental.
I approach the music totally different than most of the people you're talking about. They go in with a bunch of studio musicians - who are some of the finest musicians in the world, but they're not a band that spends a hundred nights a year together on the road jamming with each other and anticipating what the other guy's going to do. The music is as important as the lyrics are to us - we've got to have a good, strong track for everything. You've always been a big supporter of the military and veterans. In
2014, you started the Journey Home Project to raise funds for men
and women who have served our country and need help. What's the most pressing issue?
A lot of our men and women that are transitioning back into civilian life from service life...it's not always as easy as it would appear to be. We try to fill in the gaps and try to help people find what they need - if they need education; if they need medical care; if they need a bicycle to ride to work or whatever. And then we contribute to things that are not well known by the public. Veteran suicide is a horrible problem right now - there's 22 people a day that are doing it. There's a doctor at Vanderbilt that feels that there is an explanation - that there's a certain type of person [prone to suicide] and it has to do with genes, etc. Not saying that nobody besides these people would ever commit suicide, but they're more apt to do it and by identifying the genes - or whatever it is - you can develop something to bypass it or whatever you do. So we contribute to that. You've basically made a career out of being a principled guy, but looking back, have you ever compromised your beliefs or standards?
Yes, I have. As far as...I did an album one time with a studio band I didn't want to do. It was a bad idea; I knew it was going in. I had great songs and stuff, but it was a record company thing. I had signed a contract and that sort of thing - and I said I'd never do it again and I never have. You've got at least a hundred shows scheduled for this year and retirement seems very far off. But what would you be doing with yourself otherwise?
I have no idea. I haven't even started doing anything else. I borrow a phrase from the NRA when people say, 'when are you going to quit playing that fiddle?' [I respond] When they pry my cold, dead hands off of it, you know? I just love what I do and I love entertaining people. I'm still creative; I'm still writing - so as long as the good lord's willing, I'm willing. For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre.com. What was the impetus behind putting out a greatest hits album at this stage of the band's career?
We kind of likened it to we're curating a playlist for someone that's going to come to a live show and doesn't know anything else about us other than "Love Ain't." And so we were very fortunate that "Love Ain't" became a number one and earned a coveted spot on the greatest hits record. It would have been a shame if it had died really early - we would have felt a little silly. But once we kind of wrapped our heads around what a greatest hit is - it doesn't have to be a song that went platinum or did well on the radio. There are songs that really helped to move us forward as a band and got us to where we are today. Speaking of "Love Ain't," it's popularity has been wide-
ranging with many people noting that they don't normally care for country music but appreciate this particular song.
I don't really find that as backhanded at all, though I can see how someone would see that as a slap on country music. I didn't grow up a hundred percent country fan - it was kind of the stuff that crossed over that I knew, but I didn't listen to country radio until I moved down to Texas, really, for college. I had to do a lot of catch-up. So I was one of those people that converted a little bit later in life, so I totally get it. If we can be that for somebody, that's great - especially now that country's such a wide open genre. If we can kind of be that first gateway into them seeing what else they like out there, there's a lot to love. Obviously, country music has changed a lot over the last 20
years. How has the band reacted to the evolution of a more pop-oriented sound?
It matters that we want to continue to make our own music that sounds like us but also stay relevant. Where we find ourselves in there is what we've had to figure out over time. We experimented a little bit more into the pop side of things - it was mostly on the level of how a song is produced [which] can make such a big difference; just little directions, little sounds, samples. And our fans didn't like that side of us as much. Looking back, it was just a few production tweaks that would have put it right back to where we started as a band. And you know, it's great to have fans that are passionate; they'll let you know. So what we figured out is that we can't get too caught up on where country music is right now - all we can do is make our brand of country music that is, for right or wrong, who we are. We've heard from a lot of program directors on radio stations that our music sticks out in a good way; it's signature, but there's so much [out there] that's homogenous right now. To have something that pops out a little differently is a good thing. For tickets and more info, visit victorytheatre.com. The Victory is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville.

DWIGHT YOAKAM
CONCERT REVIEW Pioneering country star brought the sun-bleached sounds of Bakersfield to the tri-state
V I C TORY TH EATRE | FE BRU A RY 27 Something wicked this way came, and no it wasn’t the coronavirus. Actually, something wickedly awesome blew through our fair city on Thursday, February 27. ‘Twas the night Dwight Yoakam and his merry band blessed the Victory Theatre stage with the words (and music) of the prophets from the pantheon of Bakersfield country. Yoakam and rhinestoned cowboy crew dispensed with an invocation and launched into a rollicking country-soaked Chuck Berry hit “Little Queenie” that got the raucous congregation to their feet and moving. Yoakam quickly dusted off his well-known two step shuffle to reveal his own rhinestone festooned denim jacket. The band continued to sparkle and shine as Dwight unfurled his Bakersfield scripture to the familiar strains of Buck Owens and His Buckaroos’ “Streets of Bakersfield.” Saint Haggard’s “The Bottle Let Me Down” segued into a humorous story of Yoakam’s hazy recollection of how he discovered Willie Nelson’s favorite Merle Haggard tune, “Okie from Muskogee.” The surreal tale exposed copious amounts of smoke and facial hair befitting Nelson which coaxed streams of laughter from the well-primed audience. The tour of Bakersfield was rounded out with Ray Wylie Hubbard’s “Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother” and the California country inspired “Lodi” by Creedence Clearwater Revival. The Dude abided as he sashayed to the bar for another oat soda. The most generous portion of the show featured Yoakam’s hits which dove-tailed snuggly in tune with Owens, Haggard, and Fogerty. As Yoakam and band clearly presented a case that the Kentucky native’s sound will forever intertwine and meander through the Left Coast’s finest offerings of sun-bleached country. - Tony Aiken

13 SLAYS TILL X-MAS BLOOD MOON PICTURES Owensboro filmmakers put Volumes of Blood 3 on hold, begin production on new horror anthology Financing indie films can be challenging, to say the least. Few people know this better than P.J. Starks and Eric Huskisson, comanagers of Blood Moon Pictures, one of the region's most respected production companies. After releasing two very wellreceived horror anthologies - Volumes of Blood (2015) and Volumes of Blood 2: Horror Stories (2016) - the pair set about work on the final film in the proposed trilogy, Devil's Knight. The aim was to create something truly special, to up their game across the board. But hiring known actors and plotting big special effects balloons

NEWS4U APRIL 2020 | SUBARU CARES
ROMAIN SUBARU PRESENTS:
Subaru is much more than just a car company. In addition to building great, longlasting vehicles designed to keep you and your family safe, they are focused on making the world a better place through the SUBARU LOVE PROMISE. It's a simple but impactful vision to show love and respect to all people at every interaction with Subaru. With the help of retailers like Romain, the company is setting an example for others to follow, partnering to address pressing issues including the environment, the health and wellness of our communities, world hunger, the pursuit of knowledge and the safety and health of all animals. Romain Subaru is pleased to present the first in a series of local profiles focused on community leaders who are a positive force and a prime example of what can be achieved when everyone works together for the common good.
SUBARU LOVES THE EARTH
featuring Robin Johnston Deem
Executive Director, Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve
A lifelong member of our community, Robin Johnston Deem's journey to Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve began some years ago when she first learned of the staggering statistics regarding child obesity. It prompted the outdoors-loving fitness fan to start a playground at Good Shepherd Catholic School to help combat the disturbing trend - which in turn "stoked and inspired" her passion for health and wellness and ultimately led to a position at ECHO Community Healthcare as the organization's Marketing & Advertising Director and Employee Wellness Coordinator. With a growing interest in the health and wellness of the environment, she took on board membership at Wesselman Woods and was recently asked to step into the Executive Director role at the nature preserve. What inspires you to be a part of Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve? The environment is a critical component to a healthy community. So, I love Wesselman Woods and their mission to connect people with nature. There's nothing more inspirational than to watch children who are just learning about science and animals and to see them play and frolic out in the playscape, interacting with their friends. How is Wesselman's helping with sustainability in the area? We strive to protect, to serve and to be good stewards of the

environment. And recycling is a big component of that. We focus on Rethink, Reuse and then Recycle. This year was our first year to go completely green at our Maple Sugarbush event. Everything we used as far as utensils, cups and plates was 100% biodegradable - made of compostable material. Not only do we talk the talk, but we walk the walk. What excites you about the future of Wesselman Woods and the opportunities here? We're hoping to expand some of our programs as well as some of our facilities; we are hoping to add a tree house and restrooms/bathhouse next to the Nature Playscape. We would also like to add community gardens, increase reforestation, and make improvements to the Howell Wetlands. How do you hope to leave your mark at Wesselman Woods? I really want to be a good steward of Wesselman Woods and ensure that we have a healthy, stable environment for generations to come. It was probably 400-500 years ago this entire tract of land was a natural urban growth forest - but now we are hoping to pass that along to future generations. PUJI
SUCCESS STORIES & FUTURE VANDERBURGH HUMANE SOCIETY
After the passing of her beloved 14-yearold Yorkie, Lola, Kristi Gray made it a point to rescue another senior dog and quickly found a likely candidate on the VHS website. She high-tailed it over to the shelter to visit with Puji, a 13-year-old Yorkie with a number of health issues - including blindness. "When we went into the shelter, Puji was barking at the wall," Gray

explains. "He knew something was going on but he simply couldn't see - but Lola couldn't see either, so I was used to that." Puji also had no fur on his back and was in need of thyroid and allergy meds, plus a special diet to get his health back on track. So once she got the little fella home, Gray began cooking him chicken, veggies and oats and
AIGIS: Aigis is a female American rabbit! She’s estimated to be about 2 years old. She was dumped in Garvin Park along with 16 other domestic rabbits (don’t *EVER* do that, by the way!!) and thankfully Animal Care & Control rescued them. VHS pulled some of the bunnies to our facility to help with space. Aigis’ adoption fee is $50, and she’s already spayed & microchipped, ready for her new home! Contact Vanderburgh Humane at 812-426-2563 or adoptions@vhslifesaver.org for details!
TATER: Tater is a female black Lab mix! She’s 13 years old. She was dumped at the VHS. Her people stuck her inside the lobby door, and then left without so much as a word. So we don’t know a ton about Tater - but we do know that she is wonderful, loves everyone and everything, and she really deserves a home! Her adoption fee is $110. If you’re a senior citizen, ask about our Senior to Senior program. She’s spayed, microchipped, and ready to go home today! attending to his every need. "Every time he wakes up, we carry him outside to go potty and then carry him back in," she says. "He has, like, five beds throughout the house - he eats, drinks and then finds one to lay down on." Still, Puji's got some life left in him. He reportedly likes to come flying into Gray's office at full speed, seemingly unconcerned about bumping into everything. "We say he's coming in hot like a fajita," Gray laughs. Another successful adoption!
BAOZI: Baozi is a 1-year-old tabby from the “dumpling” litter! She has some siblings available as well - Empanada and Pierogi. She gets along just fine with other cats. Baozi’s adoption fee is $40 and she’s spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, and ready to go home today! Contact Vanderburgh Humane at 812-426-2563 or adoptions@vhslifesaver.org for details!

JUSTIN BIEBER Changes Def Jam Recordings/RBMG Getting married must have put this pop star under a productive love spell, because Justin Bieber finally released his fifth studio album - his first since 2015's excellent Purpose. But while many amazing artists feature on Changes, from Travis Scott and Post Malone to Kehlani, Lil Dicky and Quavo, it still doesn’t quite measure up. Lead single “Yummy” is a catchy and cute song, but it doesn’t satiate me the way I had hoped. And while “Intentions” is a sweet song with lyrics like “Pictureperfect, you don't need no filter/Gorgeous, make 'em drop dead, you a killer/Shower you with all my attention/Yeah, these are my only intentions,” I’m not completely enamored. Bieber’s voice still sounds like honey, but “Forever” just doesn’t hit the sweet spot; although “Get Me,” featuring Kehlani, is a sexy, sultry song, in which their two voices blend together gorgeously. “Second Emotion” with rapper Travis Scott has that same swag-pop feel I loved from “Boyfriend,” but enhanced with Auto-Tune. “ETA” is also reminiscent of “All That Matters,” but it doesn’t have the same momentum or addictive flow. Nothing here rises to the level of Purpose, which had career-making songs like “Sorry,” “I‘ll Show You,” “What Do You Mean,” and “Company” - each pure gold. “Yummy” is the only track on Changes that's even close to silver. - Marisa Patwa
MANDY MOORE Silver Landings Verve Forecast Records Mandy Moore singing in her icy-blue dress in A Walk To Remember is forever embedded into my childhood memory of a true love song sung by an angel. And who can forget her iconic performance in The Princess Diaries or her baby-faced first music video “Candy”? Although I’ve enjoyed watching Moore as an actress (most recently on This Is Us), I've been patiently waiting for her to release new music. And the silky-smooth singer has answered the call with Silver Landings, her seventh studio album. Just as Moore has matured, so has her music, with soft and personal melodies. The title track reminds me of the kind of song that should have been on the Sisterhood of The Traveling Pants soundtrack or playing quietly through Starbucks speakers. This is more of an indiepop album and not overly-produced. But I’m not sure if it works in her favor. Even “Forgiveness,” about Moore's tumultuous and unhealthy relationship with ex-husband Ryan Adams, should have been a power ballad to deliver a vengeful punch, but it sadly falls short of really delivering. Although Moore has a naturally gorgeous voice, it's simply not utilized in the best way on Silver Landings. - Marisa Patwa

NIALL HORAN Heartbreak Record Capitol Records This One Direction boy band member turned solo artist proved himself with his first studio album, 2017's Flicker, and he’s almost done it again with Heartbreak Record. “Nice to Meet Ya” gives me some major Ed Sheeran vibes. It’s catchy, but it’s already been so overplayed with the lyric “I want your number tattooed on my arm in ink I swear” already stuck in my mind - and not in a good way. The songs have a pattern of starting out with sweet intros and then flipping to higher-speed choruses that give them a surprising kick I didn’t know I needed, like in “Small Talk.” The main theme in most of Horan's songs are about lust and love, from “San Francisco” to “New Angel,” but I wish there was more variety and originality. The song I most identify with is “No Judgement,” which the singer cites as one of his favorite songs he's ever written. I would suggest listening to it for the first time by watching the music video of a loving elderly couple being completely silly - massage on a kitchen table covered in food included. - Marisa Patwa
MORRISSEY I Am Not a Dog on a Chain BMG In the midst of a growing backlash over controversial political statements, the former Smiths frontman returns with his 13th solo album. Many fans and critics alike - have attempted to cancel Morrissey out but nonetheless, he exists and soldiers on via his most engaging group of songs since 2009's Years of Refusal. Both lyrically and melodically, I Am Not a Dog on a Chain (mostly) succeeds in rekindling that old Moz magic that's kept him relevant for decades now. Still, like every other solo release since 1988, it will inevitably be pitted against his previous band's legendary catalog and come up short, but did McCartney ever produce anything on par with the Beatles? Of course not. Regardless, get over it and enjoy the numerous highlights here, including the dark, vaguely funky lead single "Bobby, Don't You Think They Know," featuring R&B royalty Thelma Houston on backing vocals. As with the album's other standouts, the electro-tinged arrangement creates a vibrant background for Morrissey's typically witty, slightly opaque musings - though on excellent album opener "Jim Jim Falls," he's a bit more direct: "If you're gonna kill yourself/Then to save face/Just kill yourself." No doubt more outrage will follow, but Moz thrives on it; in fact, he's made a whole career out of upsetting people. Why stop now? - Johnny Fletcher

RHINEGEIST WHIFFLE
JONATHAN GLUFF - 4
Wheat beers are never my preference, but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate a good one. Rhinegeist’s Whiffle is definitely one such beer. As (almost) always, I can’t stress how much better it tastes after pouring into a glass; even my wife - who appreciates good beer, but doesn’t consider herself a critic - was surprised by the difference. Doing so brings out pronounced notes of citrus on both the nose and the crisp, clean finish. A great-tasting, refreshing beer.

I usually dunk on ciders, but I have to say - this offering from Virtue really pleasantly surprised me. My main gripe is that many are too sweet, leading to either a stomach ache after only three or four, or a head-splitting hangover the next day. However, this is far from overly sweet, resulting in a nice, subtle drink that’s made for the fall but is perfect year-round. Crisp and clean with a nice warmth from the slightlydarker cherry notes.

A thick white head tops this wheat beer after pouring it in a wheat beer glass. The scents of wheat, tangerine and spice dominate the nose. Wheat flavors hit the tongue first, followed by citrus from the tangerine, with the two going back and forth in the finish. People who like wheat beer should buy this to serve during the summer. Pair it with light dishes like herb roasted chicken or mussels with French fries.
A thin white head quickly disappears from this red cider when poured into a tulip glass. A combination of the strong smells of apple and cherry control the scent profile. After a couple of seconds on the tongue, the cherry flavor returns and stays in the long finish where it plays against the apple flavor. Pair it with Wisconsin brie cheese, apple pie, cinnamon sugar doughnuts, blue cheese, gingerbread, creamy pasta dishes or chocolate truffles.

This is a cloudy, straw-colored beer. It has a slight grassy aroma but it's easy on the nose. I like the subtle spices and the dry wheat flavor. I would consider this beer on the lighter side of the Belgian witbiers.

This is a clear, rose-colored beverage. It has a good cherry flavor, but it's not really my cup of tea. It's refreshing, though, and certainly a drink worth trying. I would consider this a funky wine cooler with an emphasis on the wine.

PABST BLUE RIBBON EXTRA
JONATHAN GLUFF - 2.5
My early 20s beer consumption mainly consisted of drinking warm “Dirty 30s” of PBR. Unfortunately, 15 years of drinking craft beers has removed the rosy tint of nostalgia. I could tell you how it reminds me of drinking the juice out of a can of corn, but let’s be honest - no one drinks this for the taste or complex flavor. This’ll get you drunk for cheap, and about 30% faster with its 6.5% ABV. A beer made for shotgunning.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4
A thick white head forms on this beer and takes time to evaporate. The scent contains a balance of hops and malt that most beer drinkers recognize in an American lager. Likewise, drinking the beer also boasts the malt and hop balance. This is a good choice for beer drinkers on a budget. It could see a rise in popularity during the summer months during cookouts. Pair it with hamburgers, hotdogs or your favorite picnic foods.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4
I've never been a PBR fan but I actually like this one. The 6.5% ABV and 16oz can are pluses and the flavor has a little more sweetness than the average PBR. Also, I imagine the price point is more economical compared to other beers. Pabst impressed me with this one.

BOULEVARD CHILL VIBES
a high-quality quaff, I do have to wonder: Who was asking for a cucumber sour ale? The flavor is exactly as advertised - crisp cucumber notes on top of a competent sour ale. The finish is very clean, just as I would expect, but this is another case of brewers asking, "Can we?" instead of, "Should we?"
JONATHAN GLUFF - 2.5
Some of Boulevard's craftings are among my favorite beers, notably the Rye-On-Rye and Sixth Glass. But while Chill Vibes is by all means
PAUL BRAGIN - 3
A thick white head rests on this sour ale when poured in a tulip glass and never totally dissipates. A burst of cucumber and sour notes fill the nose. The sour and cucumber flavors
remain with the first sip of the beer, with the sour flavors becoming more prominent during the long finish. It might be more popular during the summer. Pair it with Havarti cheese, Eggs Benedict, citrusy salads or key lime pie.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 2.5
This beverage has a heavy cucumber aroma with decent carbonation. I have become a fan of the cucumber beers but Boulevard combined this one with a sour which doesn't make for the best pairing. At least not for me.
PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.
