some form of weekend entertainment. Patrons of Bud's, Marina Pointe and Timeout Lounge, in particular, have become accustomed to fullblown band performances over the years, but according to Brady, the vibe of 3rd Street Saloon is intended to be a bit more chill, focusing on two-piece acoustic spotlights. Food-wise, the menu is reportedly inspired by Chef James Shemwell's creations at Bud's - but "totally different" apart from the lunch specials. "It's going to be a big twist on what we have served before - you're going to be able to enjoy such unique items as a Grippos-dusted chicken sandwich and Gripposdusted pork tenderloin," Brady says. "And the drink menu will be just as good with both traditional and unique options." But despite all the attention directed at 3rd Street Saloon, Brady is quick to give props to the new bar's neighbors, including Stoner's Grill, Commander's Grill and Yesterdaze Bar & grill - all of which he hopes will benefit from increased foot traffic. "I think we'll feed off of each other," he says. "We've made friends with all of them - they're all great people." And the same goes for local gift shops and other family-run businesses that should see a spike in sales with more people drawn to the Square and, subsequently, other areas of Boonville. It's all about the greater good of the community - about helping each other succeed. And last but not least, there's the view. Looking out the windows of 3rd Street Saloon at the architectural beauty of the Boonville Court House is a major perk of visiting this incredibly cool bar. Put it all together and. as Brady sees it, there's every reason to motor pronto and spend some time at Boonville's newest hangout. "People are pumped - it's definitely the talk of the town."

But mostly the beer, right? And it's always a welcome respite from the bleak days of winter; arriving mid-March (on the 17th, to be exact), it signals the coming of spring, infusing partygoers with a warm, fuzzy feeling (translation: pleasant buzz) that's a cure-all for the cold weather blues. The joy that St. Patrick's Day embodies is especially welcome this year considering what everyone's been through over the last 12 months. No matter your cultural background, this all-inclusive holiday is a perfect excuse to get out and live a little - safely, of course. Please respect Covid protocols, in other words. But don't let the need to mask-up stop you from joining in on all the St. Patrick's Day fun! To help you celebrate this beloved annual holiday in style, we've put together a checklist featuring our favorite tri-state bars and restaurants. Each time you visit one of the locations listed below, simply mark it off and head to the next destination. SPEND THE NIGHT AT A HOTEL

TOP 10 WAYS TO

SPRING BREAK

2021

in

Covid may have changed the game, but you can still safely enjoy your time off this year

Any other year, most families would be busy planning a Florida

01.

No doubt everyone's been going a bit stir crazy after spending so much time at home this last year. So even if it's just for one night, how about packing up a few belongings and reserving a stay at one of our many fine area hotels? A change of scenery can do the mind a world of good and chances are the accommodations will be a heck of a lot cleaner and nicer than your current situation. Just admit it.

02.

HIT SOME GOLF BALLS

This may sound a little odd, but there are few things more enjoyable and stress-relieving than swinging a golf club violently at a little white ball out in the fresh air. Sounds nuts, works wonders. Evansville has a number of driving range options - from Walther's to Tee Time and a few area courses. Best of all, you don't have to go chasing after your inevitably wild shots. Just grab another ball from the bucket and swing for the hills again.

getaway or some sort of vacay to take advantage of the annual week off for school kids during the latter stages of March. Not so much in 2021. The game has changed, unfortunately, with Covid stealing spring break's thunder a bit. But try not to let it get you down; there's still plenty of things to do right here in the tri-state from fun activities that will brighten up your afternoon to overnight adventures sure to cure the doldrums of being isolated for much of the past 12 months. But however you decide to spend spring break - which, locally, is scheduled for the week of March 21-27 - please do so safely. Covid aside, this is often the time of year when people make some really bad decisions in the name of letting off some steam. Hey, we've all been there. Just saying that it's always good to think twice before jumping off that balcony into the shallow pool below. That's sort of a metaphor but also kind of specific. Anyhow, here we go...

03. Be Creative

You know that project you've been telling everybody about for the last year but never lifted a finger to complete? That album you were going to record, the quilt you were going to hand sew, the 1000-piece Jackson Pollack puzzle you were going to put together...etc. Well, that's what spring break's for - relieving the guilt of past failures. If nothing else, at least stop talking about said project.

04. Evansvil e

TAKE THE FAM TO ESCAPE

05.

HEAD UP TO NEW HARMONY You can never go wrong with a trip up north to the quaint town of New Harmony where everything just seems a little brighter and people seem a little friendlier. There are all sorts of sights to see - from the Roofless Church to the Athenium - as well as a beautiful state park to explore, plus impressive art galleries and unique local shops. And it's only a 40 minute drive.

08.Tour

FYI, we're talking about the business called Escape Evansville. We're not advocating for you to make a run for it with the kids in tow like you're fugitives from justice. All jokes aside, Escape Evansville is so much fun for the family. There are several escape rooms from which to choose, each with a different theme. But the goal is the same: work together to solve the clues that open the door to freedom. And you've got exactly one hour to make it happen. This is not only guaranteed to be a blast but will get the ol' noggin working again. Book now @ escapeevansville.com!

06.

HIT SOME TENNIS BALLS See the bit on hitting golf balls but substitute a racket and yellow balls. Actually, this is an even better activity for stress relief because not only can you take out some frustration on the aforementioned yellow balls but you can use it as an excuse to socialize with a friend outdoors. After all, someone's got to hit the ball back to you. Ideally, anyway.

FRANKLIN STREET BARS

Now, don't get us wrong. We're not telling you to drink your way through spring break. Granted, people have been doing that since the dawn of time - or whenever a week off in March first became a thing. But it's still a golden opportunity to hit all the hotspots that the west side of Evansville has to offer. Or just stroll up and down the strip if that suits you better. Either way, Franklin Street is one of the best places to be no matter the time of year. But especially during spring break.

10.

09.

07. Read! NEWS 4U, PREFERABLY

You've been binging shows on Netflix like you've been hording toilet paper for the last year. Enough already. Take a timeout from the screen and grab something good to read. Even a magazine will suffice, hint, hint. Yes, we'd love for you to go hog wild paging through News 4U but a book would be ok with us, too. Just something other than text messages or silly memes. Get to it!

VOLUNTEER AT AREA ANIMAL SHELTERS

This is an absolute no-brainer. Nothing will make you feel better than spending an afternoon surrounded by furry friends that just want some lovin'. Not to mention that all of the area shelters have struggled to make up for the impact of Covid on their budgets - any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Check in with the VHS, WHS, It Takes A Village and other shelters to see what sort of help they need the most. Or just donate.

HANG OUT IN BOONVILLE AT THE 3RD STREET SALOON If you happened to check out our feature on the area's hottest new bar a few pages back, then you know why this is such a good idea. 3rd Street Saloon has upped Boonville's cool factor 10 fold with a two-story nightlife venue that's been completely renovated from top to bottom. Add in acoustic entertainment, an amazingly unique menu and a spectacular view and there's every reason to head there pronto. Of course, Boonville has a number of other great hometown bars to patronize along with lots of locally-owned shops to peruse. Might as well make it a full day adventure.

PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

PRESENTS: FAIRYTALE FANTASIA VICTORY THEATRE (LIMITED AVAILABILITY) & LIVESTREAM MARCH 20 | 7 P.M. The 2020-21 EPO season heads into the homestretch with a live performance of Disney favorites

Just three concerts to go. The EPO's inaugural season with Music Director Roger Kalia at the helm has been a challenging proposition as a result of Covid safety protocols, but the tri-state's best orchestra has still managed to produce top-level performances whether in front of a limited Victory Theatre crowd or solely on LiveStream. Maintaining the expected excellence of the EPO while navigating the ever-changing landscape of the pandemic is something Kalia can truly be proud of - and he's saved the best for last with a final run of three exquisite programs beginning with Fairytale Fantasia on March 20, followed by Triumph & Celebration in late April and

the

season-ending

Fantasy

Night at the Phil at the beginning of May. Perfect for the whole family, Fairytale Fantasia promises an evening of Disney favorites including Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Giacchino’s Music from Coco, Debussy’s Clair de Lune, Bach’s Toccata y Fuga, the opening of Fantasia and more, including Beethoven's "Allegro con brio" from Symphony No. 5 and selections from Stravinksy's The Firebird Suite (arranged by Schaffer). Fans of Disney music should know these pieces by heart as they play such an integral part of each film's soundtrack - and no doubt will be mesmerized by the EPO's dazzling interpretations of such iconic musical moments. It's truly a fantastic pairing! If you've yet to experience the Phil this year there's no better time to get in the loop as this month's concert is scheduled to include both limited seating opportunities at the Victory and a LiveStream option. Either way, we're just lucky that the music is still alive during this difficult time - a connection with the arts should be cherished now more than ever so don't miss out on one of the few live performances happening in March! To purchase tickets, call the EPO ticket office at 812-425-5050 or order online at evansvillephilharmonic. org. Tickets for the LiveStream concert are $15 for a single (device) ticket. Patrons must have a valid email address. The Victory Theatre is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville.

CLEAN BITE LIFE Healthy Cooking with Lindsay Rasure

After completing my first Whole30 program a couple years ago, it really opened my eyes to how sugar is added to everything. For example, why does Marinara sauce need cane sugar added to it? When I look for recipes now, I tend to just search Whole 30 right away so I know the recipe is going to be clean without any added sugars. I took our favorite Whole 30 Sloppy Joe recipe and put a twist on it. Do yourself a favor and make this delicious recipe! Since we added cheese it’s not Whole 30 anymore but well worth the indulgence!

STOLEN

REMAINS One of the tri-state's hardest rocking bands reforms, eyes live shows and new music The year was 2016 and everything was looking up for Stolen Remains. Or at least that's how it appeared from the outside. Having completed a brand new EP that not only rocked as hard as ever but also showed signs of growth with a greater sense of melody, particularly from a vocal standpoint, the Evansvillebased band seemed primed for something big. But, as singer Brandon Oost recalls, "that's when things started going south." Forevermore, despite being a step forward musically from their previous full-throttle, metal-tinged offerings, was never officially released and not long after, drummer Drew Gray departed, soon followed by Oost. And while guitarist Mike VanBibber and bassist Carlos Ross carried on for a bit with new members, the vibe was never quite the same; the two eventually moved on to a new groove-metal project, Dragumite, which is still active. Stolen Remains' premature exit from the local music scene left a major void, especially in terms of live performance. Driven by the band's bottom-heavy sound and Oost's crackling energy up front, their shows were pummeling spectacles that have been sorely missed. But all that's about to change. "I was the one who brought up the reunion conversation," Oost offers. "I've been showing my fiancée old videos of the band and thinking, damn, I miss this! I keep saying that I'm getting older and that I'm done with music, but it's never out of your blood."

But Oost also hopes to continue the musical development evident on Forevermore, to marry his evolving vocal approach with VanBibber's seemingly endless arsenal of gut-punching riffs. New music is on the agenda, in other words. "I still want to be aggressive and heavy, but I want to branch out a bit," he explains. "More the way we were leaning when I left [the band]. I was exploring my abilities rather than just being gruff - a more grown-up angle. But don't get me wrong, when you're up on stage and have that adrenaline pumping through you...I'm definitely going to let loose." First, however, the guys need to shake off the rust. TIMOTHY

SEED & HIS NORTH KOREAN INTERNET BAND

Familiar with an album that Steve Tyner of Black Cat Recording helmed for now-defunct Evansville rock band the Jangle Sheep, Bingham decided to give the in-demand local producer a call, ultimately booking three days in the studio late last October for the first in a proposed series of EPs, kicking things off with a trio of "very rudimentary songs, singer-songwriter stuff put through my filter and drawn from a few different influences." As Bingham tells it, he was going for a "western goth" sound on "God's Gift" while "Bradley Digs Graves" pays homage to legendary punk rockers The Cramps - albeit with a caveat: "I wanted it to be like a stoned-out version of the band; but they

Then there's the cynical "Yoko Ono Girl" which unexpectedly features xylophone and is powered by a simple chugging guitar riff with echoes of Love & Rockets' "Kundalini Express." But while the musical comparisons are apparent, it's Bingham's deadpan,

As noted, there are several more Timothy Seed releases on the horizon. Bingham's already scheduled more studio time with Tyner in late July to document a collection of "heartland rock" songs inspired by the likes of John Mellencamp and Tom Petty followed by a Melvins-inspired drone-metal offering next winter as well as a batch of "shoegaze type material with a lot ethereal elements." This is one ambitious farmer, make no mistake.

NEWS4U MARCH 2021 | ENTERTAINMENT

with Gavin Gaddis Welcome to the Podcast Corner, your source for some of the best and most inventive podcasts around. Each month I'm offering up four bite-sized reviews, so read on and then listen in! Want more podcast recommendations? You can find long-form reviews, musings on happenings in the podcasting world, and links to podcasts I produce at my website: thepodreport.com or follow me on Twitter @ThePodReport.

HUBRIS: A 24 HOUR PODCASTING PROJECT (SSN 2 COMING SOON)

Coordinated by podcasting powerhouses Caroline Minks, Anne Baird, and Tal Minear (if you don’t know them, get to Twitter and enjoy the many hours of podcasts they collectively produce), HUBRIS is the result of a bunch of podcasters getting into teams to write, voice act, and sound design a short audio fiction based off a prompt given to every team. The prompt for the first round was the term “all-nighters” and the six teams created wildly different interpretations. Even the first two entries swing wildly from a sci-fi story about an astronaut in danger to a tale of an understudy practicing for a lead role overnight in a haunted theater. 24hourhubris.com

FAN WARS: THE EMPIRE CLAPS BACK (MID-SEASON HIATUS)

A romcom for the internet age, Fan Wars: The Empire Claps Back is a fiction podcast depicting the Skype conversations of Jackie and Steven, two major fans of Star Wars who come down on incredibly different sides about the quality of The Last Jedi. Their bickering slowly blossoms into a friendship, perhaps even more someday. Each bite-sized episode will leave one cackling and wanting to rewatch their favorite Star Wars flick. The show’s second anniversary is on the horizon with a special one-off episode to celebrate. Shenee Howard has pushed out the boat for both microfiction and romantic comedy in the audio sphere. A must-listen. allcapsexcited.com/fanwarspodcast

THE CRYPTONATURALIST (BI-MONTHLY)

This deceptively calming audio fiction series delivers fascinating tales of mythical creatures through the soothing narration of the titular character, a naturalist by way of cryptozoology. Each episode is packaged to feel like a David Attenborough nature documentary delivered by way of Bigfoot. The creatures are as fantastical as the host's voice is captivating. The show also features a wonderful break segment that spotlights short fiction and poetry in a similar manner to how Welcome to Night Vale showcases music in their Weather segment. I recommend starting from the first episode to hear a simple little concept blossom into a beautifully realized series. cryptonaturalist.com

BEYOND BEYOND BELIEF (COMPLETE)

Remember that old series Beyond Belief hosted by Johnathan Frakes? Each episode featured five eerie stories, some of which were based on real events, challenging viewers to guess which were fake. Beyond Beyond Belief gathered several friends to watch each episode, pausing just before the reveal to discuss each story and decide whether they believe it’s real or fake. A coin flip decides as well to see if the hosts’ guesses are any better than pure random chance. Simple in structure, hilarious in execution. A perfect example of a podcast that can have a limited lifespan and still be entertaining years down the line. beyondbeyondbelief.com

MARCH MOVIE MADNESS: SCI-FI TEENS, AFRICAN PRINCES AND DUELING MONSTERS

COMING 2 AMERICA (3/5)

While sequels are usually hit or miss - especially ones made 30 years after the original - Coming 2 America is sure to be a solid runner-up, if not just as good as the 1988 classic comedy judging by the trailer. While one generation has grown up on the first film which followed a young Prince Akeem of Zamunda, played by Eddie Murphy, falling in love in Queens, a whole new one will get pulled into this follow-up. Arsenio Hall also reprises his role as Murphy’s sidekick Semmi and from the looks of it, they goof around in a few character roles. And the guest stars are not only fire, but truly modernize this story, from former SNL cast member Leslie Jones to comedy legend Tracey Morgan; even singer Teyana Taylor appears. Coming 2 America drops on Amazon Prime Video on March 5.

CHAOS WALKING (3/5)

Helping us fill the aching void for dystopian teen dramas is Chaos Walking, a film that's been years in the making but one that will have been worth the wait, I feel. I mean, who doesn’t want to watch two good-looking superheroes team up? And yes, I am talking about Star Wars’ Daisy Ridley and Spiderman’s Tom Holland. And while the plot seems thick - Ridley’s mysterious character, Viola, lands on a planet inhabited by Holland's character, Todd, where women have been non-existent for years - it should be some popcorn fun. Of course, they team up together to uncover the dark truths of the planet and most likely fall in love or at least in lust. It may not rival Divergent or Hunger Games, but I’m sure this $100M budget film will give us some good intergalactic fight scenes, angsty teen kisses in space suits and gorgeous special effects. Chaos Walking arrives in theaters on March 5.

GODZILLA VS. KONG (3/31)

This epic ending to Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island is going to bring us that big energy we need right now. Godzilla vs. Kong stars Stranger Things' Millie Bobby Brown once again as heroine Madison Russell, while Alexander Skarsgård jumps into his role as geologist Nathan Lind - a fun character to see the alpha male star play as he is a more latent hero in the series. But they aren’t the only stars that will be figuring out which big, bad monster they must side with: Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Demián Bichir and Eiza González also appear. Safe to say we all need some silly monster fun these days, and this battle between two titans will be a welcome escape from the pandemic. I, for one, am betting on Kong. Godzilla vs. Kong arrives in theaters and on HBO Max on March 31.

SPRING BREAK A FAKE CONVERSATION ABOUT

BETWEEN TWO LOCAL COLLEGE STUDENTS WITH JOHNNY FLETCHER

Dude, you are NOT going to believe this but we can't go to Florida this year because of the pandemic. I'm, like, so over this Covid crap. How are we supposed to get blind-ass drunk and obnoxiously hit on hot chicks in bikinis if we're stuck here in isolation? Forget spring break - more like spring prison, am I right?

Totally, dude. Such an epic bummer. I was totally going to lay waste to, like, a case of beer every day on the beach and play volleyball till I collapsed from a combination of alcohol poisoning and sunstroke. And, like, nobody would call for an ambulance or anything - they'd just leave me passed out on the sand. Was going to be amazing. Doesn't anybody care about what WE'RE going through - about our right to party? These are supposed to be the best years of our lives or something, you know?

Amen, bro. This is, like, totally unconstitutional or whatever. I think there's even an amendment against this. I might even write my congressman to complain after I figure out who he is because somebody needs to answer for this.

Dude, that's an epic waste of time. Let's take our case straight to Tik-Tok - complaining about stuff on social media is how you make things happen. I bet we'll be on a flight to Daytona Beach in no time, bro.

That's brilliant, bro. This is going to be the best spring break ever. Let's totally smash a case of beer to celebrate.

*This is a blatant exaggeration of a conversation overheard while in line (6 feet apart) at an area restaurant. Many liberties were taken in an apparent attempt at humor.

VHS ADOPTION SPOTLIGHT

Rebecca Paxton likes to joke that her husband Graham "just secretly always wanted to run a zoo." Out on Evansville's west side, the Paxton family - with full approval and encouragement from dad - currently has seven animals in their care, including two hamsters, two cats, two chinchillas and one of the most recent additions, a black and white-spotted Rex rabbit which they adopted from the VHS nearly six months ago. While it might appear that they simply take animals in at will, in truth, a lot of thought went into bringing the adorable rescue home last September - a process that involved a well-researched study of rabbit ownership as well as a slide presentation put together by the Paxtons' 12-yearold daughter Alexandra in an effort to convince her parents that she could care for an animal on her own. She sealed the deal by proposing that it would serve as therapy for her anxiety and OCD. Given the go-ahead, Alexandra spent many an hour online checking out the rabbits available at the VHS, narrowing her choice down to two that caught her eye based on her research. "I wanted to get one in the age range of four to eight months which is apparently the best time because the rabbit knows things but hasn't bonded with anyone yet," she explains. After several in-person visits to the shelter with her dad, she picked "Cady" who reportedly came from a poor situation. "I wanted to show her what a good home was," Alexandra says, displaying great maturity. True to her word, she's provided a loving environment for her new furry friend, tending to the rabbit's every need. In fact, when Cady - so named as a tribute to Elizabeth Cady Stanton, a women's rights leader in the mid-to-late 1800s - unexpectedly doubled in size, Alexandra spent all of her Christmas money on a spacious dog crate to house her; dad and grandpa even constructed an upper level inside for more play options. "Cady loves it," she says. But Cady spends most her days outside of the crate, free to roam when Alexandra gets home from school. The two are reportedly getting along just swimmingly and even went trick-or-treating together last October (both dressed as bumble bees - too cute for words), drawing much attention from onlookers who all wanted to pet this soft and friendly rescue. But while she enjoys people, Cady's apparently not a big fan of snow. After the big storm recently hit Evansville, Alexandra took her out on the back porch to experience the fluffy white stuff for the first time. "She was like, 'uh, no, take me in - I do not like this.'" Smart rabbit!

FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE Life Rolls On BMLG Records

ZAYN Nobody is Listening RCA Records In a year in which he became a father, former One Direction singer Zayn Malik has also created a great album - his third release. It gives us a nice glimpse into his true artistry, with the popstar having full creative control for the first time. And it must be a blessing, having come from a band with five strong personalities. “Better” has an easy, breezy, sexy vibe with some gorgeous guitar. For some shirtless, pink-haired Zayn, I would highly suggest you check out the video on YouTube. “Connexion” gives you goosebumps when he hits those high notes. “Tightrope” is a great representation for the Indian and Pakistani communities - any desi, really - while “Calamity” shows us the rawness of Zayn's heart as he expresses his love for Gigi Hadid and his new baby daughter: “Nostalgia/ What a funny feeling / I feel depleted from feeling I’ve been revealing...I say it for my sanity/ Whatever the calamity/ I did this for myself.” This intimate and warm album is absolutely breathtaking and I can’t wait to watch Zayn continue to come into his own as a musician and as a father. - Marisa Patwa

HAYLEY WILLIAMS FLOWERS for VASES / descansos Atlantic Records Paramore’s pop-punk princess, Hayley Williams, is at it again with her second studio album, which was a surprise drop on February 5. Like many artists, Williams has taken advantage of her time during quarantine, releasing this album just nine months after her solo debut Petals of Amor. And her singing and songwriting are just as strong as ever, with lyrics like, “Time moves slow, I just talk to myself/ I finish my own sentences the way you used to / Why do memories glow the way real moments don’t?/ Ah my altar is full of our love’s delusions." For a sweet, peaceful song to listen to while reflecting with a glass of wine, “Trigger” is the right one. “Inordinary” is hauntingly beautiful and “Just a Lover” is the perfect accompaniment to hot tea and a good book on a rainy day. But, while Williams' voice is gorgeous and the lyrics fire all throughout the album, there aren’t as many powerhouse songs as I was hoping for, like the Paramore faves I listened to on repeat during my prima donna high school days. It’s just too much drear when I want the drama. - Marisa Patwa

Even though I'm not a country girl at heart, I have to admit that Florida Georgia Line comprised of Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley - is a talented duo that consistently delivers sweet hits to my radio that make me croon out of my window in ways I never thought I would, especially to country. And they are blessing us once again with new music - 16 incredible tracks back-to-back. This fifth studio album is a great showcase of their love of the country life, evident by “Long Live Nights Like These.” And they have a wit about their lyrics, too, with lines like, “Long live all the small towners, sunup to sundowners / That old school Haggard and Hank / Long live longneck bottles and wide-open throttles / And old dirt roads with no name.” It’s simple, but impactful. This former cover band from Nashville has grown so much, especially with songs like “Life Rolls On,” which made the top 10 on the music charts. It’s easy to hear why. - Marisa Patwa

PASSENGER Songs for the Drunk & Broken Hearted Nettwerk Records The renowned English singersongwriter who graced us with the delicate and brooding “Let Her Go” starts 2021 with his 12th studio album. While the record takes us on a journey of a heavy breakup, Passenger doesn’t dwell too much, keeping this collection upbeat, vibrant, and sometimes playful. Co-produced by Ed Sheeran, opening track "Sword from the Stone" explores more piano-driven fare found in alt-rock favorites such as Keane and Jack’s Mannequin, but then Songs takes a dive into the sunshine pop sounds of The Beach Boys with a hint of Bruce Springsteen, while still staying true to the folk roots that made Passenger a household name. Tracks like “Remember to Forget” explore the sounds of The Eagles and the Steve Miller Band, while “The Way I Love You” ties in coffeehouse rock balladry, showcasing excellent acoustic work, as if he was starring in his own MTV Unplugged special. But it’s towards the latter half of the album where Passenger has us hanging on his every word, where his vocal performances on “Sandstorm” and “Suzanne” are front-and-center and remind us of how sincere and tender his true talents are. - Freddie Bourne

NEWS4U MARCH 2021 | MUSIC REVIEWS

WEEZER OK Human Atlantic Records Weezer’s new album is so bad I don’t even know what to say about it. When I was a 17-year-old geek, Weezer was without a doubt my favorite band. Even at that time, they had released what many fans consider awful albums. But with all their shortcomings, I found that 2005’s Make Believe and 2008’s Red Album still had artistic merit, or, at the very least, inspired songwriting. Though I’m still fond of early Weezer, I haven’t been able to get into anything they’ve released in the past 10 years. On their 14th studio album, I find they are finally at the point where I can no longer allow them to slide. Weezer, what on earth are you doing? OK Human is a collection of over-produced, boring, uninspired, plastic, hollow, songs. The songs are so forgettable, you don’t even realize how catchy they are - and being catchy is about all Weezer have left at this point. I’m not even disappointed in Weezer anymore, I’m just sad to see a legendary band continually lowering the bar with each release. - Russ Finn

BLACK COUNTRY, NEW ROAD For the first time Ninja Tune I’ll admit, I did not want to like For the first time, the debut album by UK band Black Country, New Road. Every detail about Black Country’s persona - their posh look, the trendy speaksing vocals, the name-dropping and referencing of other bands, the comma in their band name - screamed affected try-hards with a great PR budget. But then I listened to For the first time for the first time . . . and I sighed and acknowledged they’re on to something. On their debut, the seven-piece band combines Jewish klezmer music with angular guitar riffs and post-rock song structures. Even though they don’t sound too dissimilar to the artists in their scene (black midi, Squid), Black Country offer an exciting collection of songs that are infinitely more creative and demanding than anything Weezer have put out in 18 years. - Russ Finn

AARON LEE TASJAN Tasjan! Tasjan! Tasjan! New West Records Tasjan! Tasjan! Tasjan!, the latest album from Nashville singer-songwriter Aaron Lee Tasjan, is a fun pop rock album full of the sunny sensibilities of the 1960s and 70s. On nearly every track, his influences can be pointed out quite matter-of-factly. Lead single “Up All Night” finds Tasjan doing his best Tom Petty, while the following track “Another Lonely Day” sounds a lot like The Beatles. Elsewhere, Tasjan sounds like ELO or Harry Nilsson. Make no mistake, though, while some artists shamelessly ape the sounds of their influencers, Tasjan pays homage to his heroes with the utmost care, never coming across as a parody or a phony. If you like any of the aforementioned comparisons, this is an album worth looking into. - Russ Finn

ARLO PARKS Collapsed in Sunbeams Transgressive Records I'll call it right now: Arlo Parks will be the next big thing from across the pond. The 20-year-old British singer-songwriter kicks off her fantastic debut album with a deepbellowing, spoken meditation before diving into material that explores insecurities, isolation, and words of guidance imploring us to get out of the physical and psychological dark places and live a little. In contrast to her attention-grabbing speaking voice, Parks’ soft singing keeps you engaged and hopeful. Early on, she explores Alicia Keys and Anita Baker territory, with inklings of trip-hop, lo-fi hip hop, and quiet storm before channeling some Norah Jones with a little more oomph, where she plays with the melodies and communicates with the drum patterns and allows all the instruments to shine. Halfway through, there’s a pretty significant shift, where Parks trades her bedroom-like production for more craftily-catered urban pop, ushering in more commercial appeal on tracks like “Just Go” and “For Violet,” intermixing slices of synthpop and gritty roots found on a soul record ready for a second spin. The finale, “Porta 400,” sums all of Parks' personalities up perfectly, exploding into a contemporary blues and roots masterpiece similar to what helped Moby hit superstardom with Play. - Freddie Bourne

Blues with Bragin TOM GILBERTS Old School Polymerase Records Portland's Tom Gilberts unleashes his renowned musical chops on the mostly instrumental Old School which opens with “Lady Luck,” a song about hitting a streak of bad breaks while gambling. The Texas-style guitar from Gilberts sounds eerily familiar. “Zoot Suit Shuffle” sounds like a blast from the past with Dave Captein laying down a phenomenal bass line on the instrumental song. The chilled-out melody at the beginning of “Sun Vibe” slides into great guitar playing from Gilberts and lightning fast drumming from Brian Foxworth. Neatly, the title track seems to merge old country blues and 1950s rock and roll. The steady drumbeat on “Dark Clouds” fits in nicely with acoustic guitar and bass that gives the song a hint of jazz flavor. “The North Fork” maintains both a relaxed and funky sound and seems like an excellent song to play in a dimly lit club. Gilberts sings about a woman who treated him poorly on “You Missed Me.” “Brown’s Camp” features a heavy and melancholy guitar from Gilberts while Foxworth keeps a great beat. Gilberts sings about spending quality time enjoying life with someone special on “Nighttime.” For more info, visit tomgilberts.com. - Paul Bragin

MARCH BEER REVIEWS

This month’s beers are available depending on supply & demand at all 10 Liquor Locker locations. Visit our website at www.Liquor-Locker.com. RHINEGEIST CLOUD HARVEST

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4

As the name would imply, you’ll find this IPA to be deliciously hazy. It pours a nice thick head that gives off tropical notes of mango on the nose. Mango and stone fruit on the palate give way to a nice smooth finish, with very little hoppy bitterness. If you like a good New England IPA, give this one a try.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4.25

A thick white head forms on this cloudy IPA and stays for a long time. A strong burst of citrus notes from the hops controls the scent profile. Some sweetness from the coconut used during brewing hits the tongue first, followed by some citrus notes and more coconut in the long finish. People who enjoy IPAs will want to try this limited offering. Pair it with fish tacos or citrus desserts like pineapple upside-down cake.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3

This beer pours a hazy, light golden/straw color. The aromas are citric - some lemon and orange marmalade but nothing too pronounced. I can taste some peach and apricot. It's somewhat juicy, but seems even more on the drier side. An ABV of 6.5% amps it up a little. It's sharp and crisp and overall, a decent beer.

VIRTUE CIDER MICHIGAN CHERRY

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.5

This cider pours a clear red/orange hue with notes of cherry on the nose, followed by a distinct tartness on the palate. Not very sweet at all, this is a cider that will really make you pucker. I found it had just the right balance of cherry without tasting medicinal. It doesn’t linger on the palate, making this an easy drinking cider, if you can handle the tartness.

PAUL BRAGIN - 3.5

A white head crowns this reddish cider when poured in a traditional English pub glass, but it disappears quickly. The scent seems reminiscent of a cherry orchard when the fruit is ready for picking. The initial sip tastes like cider, but the cherry flavors return and stay for a long time in the finish. People wanting a lighter drink with strong fruit flavors should try this. Pair it with Asian cuisine, Cajun dishes or hot wings.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3

I'm not a cider fan so it's hard to get excited about this type of beverage. It has the crisp cherry flavor which is somewhat refreshing but in all honesty, it's a little much for me. I'm sure people who prefer the ciders will love this beverage but to me, this is just an amped-up wine cooler - but a decent one at that.

SIERRA NEVADA DANKFUL IPA

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4.25

Described as “generously hoppy,” this IPA does not disappoint in that regard. Pouring a thick, creamy head, there are notes of pine on the nose. It's very resinous on the palate, with a clean finish full of bitter hoppy goodness. With a 7.4% ABV, this is a poster child for big, hoppy IPAs.

PAUL BRAGIN - 4

A thick white head tops this IPA and evaporates very slowly. A generous amount of hops fills the nose. The bitter hop flavors remain with the first sip of the beer and stay in the extended finish. People who like hoppy beers will want to drink this. Use it as a brine the next time you cook a turkey. You can also pair it with a wide variety of spicy foods.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This beer pours a hazy orange-ish color with a thin white head that leaves some lace. It has subtle dank pine and fruit notes. The taste is nicely-balanced and easy to drink with a pine resin base and bitter citrus finish. The mouthfeel is medium in body and has good carbonation. Interestingly, it has a fairly high ABV, but the pine flavors mask the heat of the alcohol.

PAUL HOLLYFELD - 3.5

A thick white head rests on this IPA and leisurely dissipates. Citrus scents dominate the nose, with some pine scents also present. The hoppy citrus flavors continue while drinking the beer and remain during the finish. IPA lovers should drink this. Pair this beer with a variety of foods like some smoky

and citrusy carnitas tacos, some savory sushi, or a nice juicy burger with some gorgonzola or bleu cheese.

JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4

This beer pours a hazy, dark golden yellow/orange color with good carbonation and a healthy white head. I can smell the hops and malt, with a nice citrus complex. The taste is pleasant - hoppy and malty with a nice citrus complex and pine notes. It has a medium body and sweet aroma with a slightly bitter/dry finish that's crisp.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

Q: My wife and I just had our first child but don't have a lot of assets. Do we need a will? A: Yes, it's a good idea for everyone to have a will, even if they don't have a lot of assets. One of the best reasons for parents of young children to have a will is to use it to designate who should be named the guardian(s) of the children

should something happen to both parents while the kids are still minors. Without having that type of specification in place, a court may appoint someone to be the guardian who wouldn't be the parents' first choice. A will also

allows you to direct who will receive your assets, rather than having the state do it for you, through what is called

intestate succession. "Intestate" simply means dying without having a valid last will and testament in place. In Indiana, if a person who is married and has one or more children dies without a will, the intestacy statutes direct that the surviving spouse receives one-half of the deceased person's assets and the child or children take or split the other

half, regardless of their ages. Most people would prefer that their spouse have the full use of those funds while living, and then leave the rest to the children after the second spouse is gone. Finally, if you do want to leave any money for your kids directly, you can appoint the person who will serve as custodian of those funds until they turn at least 18, or name a trustee who would manage the funds for them until an even later age when you would feel more comfortable with them receiving their full inheritance.
