ALLMAN BETTS Southern rockers coming to Evansville in support of sophomore release
Band
APRIL 23 | OLD NATIONAL EVENTS PLAZA | 8 P.M.
It's been a while, eh? Live music has been mostly MIA at the downtown Evansville venues over the last year but finally there's a break in the clouds with the Allman Betts Band arriving on April 23 to liven things up a bit. The southern rockers who harbor a jam band influence - are fronted by sons of the Allman Brothers' founding members; which means they've got musical DNA for days. Fittingly, Devon Allman and Duane Betts drew on every bit of it for the group's 2019 debut, Down to the River, a raw, raucous outing that represented their first time playing together with the other members of the seven-piece
ensemble.
Safe to say sparks flew in the studio. Cut to the summer of 2020. After a relentless run of live shows to promote the
debut,
the
guys
reconvened to record the follow-up, tight as a drum and firing on all cylinders. The resulting release, a double album titled Bless Your Heart, is described as "vibrantly reflecting the individual and collective experiences of all seven, all drawing inspiration from the band's symbolic hometown - a place Devon Allman calls the "United States of Americana."" Standouts include the Lynyrd Skynyrdesque opening track "Pale Horse Rider" and the self-explanatory party anthem "Airboats & Cocaine" - but the whole set is solid from top to bottom with no weak link. The band's live reputation speaks for itself so don't miss out on what will hopefully be just the first of many great tri-state concerts in 2021. For tickets and more info, visit oldnationaleventsplaza.com. The ONEP is located at 715 Locust St. in downtown Evansville.

AARON LEWIS "STATE I'M IN: ACOUSTIC SONGS & STORIES" TOUR APRIL 23 | OWENSBORO SPORTSCENTER | 8 P.M.
Outlaw country singer bringing intimate show to western Kentucky While most music fans first became acquainted with Aaron Lewis via Staind, the hugely popular nu metal band he formed in 1995 and continues to front, the outspoken outlaw with a signature weathered voice is more known for his solo country outings these days. But the singer's embracing of a genre far removed from the heaviness of "Mudshovel" shouldn't be surprising; after all, Staind favorites such as "It's Been Awhile" and "Outside" could have been recorded by the likes of Waylon Jennings in a different era. Not to mention Lewis grew up with a notable country influence - the need to tell stories through song has always been in his blood. Lewis
first
dipped
his
toe into country music a decade ago with the release of the Town Line EP, followed by 2012's The Road, a gritty full-length effort that confirmed the singer's intentions to bring back the old school feel of Jennings and Johnny Cash. Four years later, Sinner solidified Lewis' status as a rebel with a cause, reaching number one on the charts; tracks like "That Ain't Country" called out the genre's many posers, while "Story of My Life" detailed his often uneven journey. He backed the success of the album up with 2019's State I'm In, collaborating with such acclaimed songwriters as Dan Tyminski and the late Keith Whitley to craft a dark yet ultimately hopeful collection that's replete with personal catharsis. Known for his impassioned performances, Lewis shines in an intimate setting. Get your tickets now for this highly-anticipated event. For tickets and more info, visit owensborosportscenter.com. The OSC is located at 1215 Hickman Ave. in Owensboro.

SLIPPERY WHEN WET
ACOUSTIC BON JOVI
Tribute
Outdoor venue's 2021 live music series kicks off with a hair-raising performance LINCOLN AMPHITHEATRE | MAY 1 | 6 P.M.
In addition to upcoming concerts at the Old National Events Plaza and Owensboro Sportscenter, mark your calendar for the opening night of Lincoln Amphitheatre's 2021 live music series. Truly one of the nation's most spectacular venues, there are few better places to take in a show; the beauty of the surrounding scenery and welcoming intimacy of this storied outdoor site - located just 55 minutes northeast of Evansville - make it more than worth the short trip. First up on the Lincoln Amphitheatre stage this season is Slippery When Wet, a Bon Jovi tribute band that's toured internationally to great acclaim - not to mention was officially authorized in 2007 by the legendary hair metal heroes themselves. In fact, in 2018, singer Jason Morey was chosen to perform as the only Jon Bon Jovi impersonator in the “Legends in Concert” Las Vegas show. For this special acoustic performance, two SWW members will revisit all the hair-raising hits, including "Livin' on a Prayer," "Dead or Alive," "You Give Love a Bad Name," "It's My Life," "I'll Be There for You," "Bed of Roses," "Bad Medicine" and many more. In other words, if you grew up in the 80's, this will be the soundtrack of your teenage years played out in a fantastic live setting. With safety protocols still in place, seating is limited, so don't wait to secure your tickets! For tickets and more info, visit lincolnamphitheatre.com. The venue is located at 15032 E. County Rd. 1500 in Lincoln City, IN.

PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
SEASON-ENDING PERFORMANCES Music Director Roger Kalia and the EPO tune up for the final Classics and Pops concerts of 2021
It goes without saying that the 2020-2021 season has been one of the most challenging in the history of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra - for all the obvious reasons. Staging a series of live performances involving a large group of players during a pandemic is hardly the easiest task; but new Music Director Roger Kalia and crew overcame all obstacles to produce another fantastic run of Classics and Pops concerts that more than lived up to expectations. And now there are just two opportunities remaining to experience the Phil before the curtain comes down on Kalia's inaugural campaign.
CLASSICS FINALE VICTORY THEATRE / APRIL 25 / 4 P.M. First up is the final Classics concert of the 2020-2021 season. True to form, Kalia has dreamt up a diverse program that's sure to please both traditional and non-traditional classical music fans with pieces by the master himself, Mozart, Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla and 38-year-old IndianAmerican Reena Esmail. The latter's Teen Murti presents three musical tableaux, each based on Hindustani melodic tradition - which should be a welcome musical education for many listeners. Piazzolla's contribution, in contrast, is the Suite from Maria de Buenos Aires, arranged for brass quintet and percussion. The revolutionary composer referred to this blend of jazz, tango and counterpoint as nuevo tango. Last but hardly least, Mozart's Symphony No. 41 ("Jupiter") stands as a truly remarkable work, long considered one of the greatest symphonies ever - the perfect note to end on for the Classics concert series.
FANTASTY NIGHT AT THE PHIL
VICTORY THEATRE / MAY 1 / 7 P.M. And it all comes down to the final Pops concert of the 2020-2021 season, a crazy fun musical foray into magic and fantasy. And video games? Indeed. Rest assured it's not "game over" for the EPO just yet - they're primed and ready to play the soundtracks of Super Mario Bros and Legend of Zelda so sit back and enjoy as these arcade classics are brought to life on stage. The evening's program also features magical selections from John Williams' Harry Potter & The Sorcerer's Stone as well as highlights from Star Wars: The Mandalorian - a little live-action musical fantasy courtesy of the EPO. Get set for an all-around amazing send-off for the tri-state's best orchestra! For tickets - in person or LiveStream - visit evansvillephilharmonic.org or call 812-425-5050.

WILKERSON FRUSTRATION GROWS AS THE DISAPPEARANCE OF A 45-YEAR-OLD
EVANSVILLE WOMAN REMAINS A MYSTERY
It's a missing persons case that continues to haunt an area family desperate to find their loved one. Over nine long months ago (June 21, 2020), 45-year-old Dawnita Wilkerson disappeared, last seen on surveillance footage at an Evansville motel as she stepped inside a silver/pewter-colored 2004 Chevy SUV. The vehicle reportedly traveled to southern Illinois where Wilkerson's trail stopped cold; the mother of six - who was just a week out from beginning nursing school - seemingly vanished into thin air. Initially, despite the tireless efforts of her family, her disappearance failed to receive much attention; however, the FBI eventually came on board to aid the Evansville Police Department in what's now deemed an active criminal case. But while there are suspects believed to be involved somehow, no arrests have been made - much to the family's frustration. They feel they know the answer as to why Wilkerson suddenly went missing but must wait impatiently for law enforcement to take action. In the meantime, Wilkerson's family requests that anyone with information that can bring a conclusion to this heartbreaking case please come forward. A reward of $2500 has been offered as an incentive - simply call the tip line at 812-435-6194 or email finddawnitawilkerson@gmail.com. You may also contact the FBI Indianapolis Office at 317-595-4000 or the EPD at 812-436-7979. In addition, please consider donating to the Show Up For Dawnita! GoFundMe page. Wilkerson's six children have struggled mightily without their mother. In fact, the family as a whole has truly suffered; there's not only the financial burden but the incredible stress of searching day in and day out, wondering if they'll ever have closure. It's all taken a tremendous toll on everyone.

GETTING TO KNOW THE COUPLE
I do send a questionnaire to the couple but if they've booked over a year out I wait until we get a little closer to the day to interact. Once they've set a timeline with the photographer and I have more of an idea of what time management I need, I'll get a sense of the couple's personalities and the styles of music they like. I film a lot of west side couples and they do a lot of ceremonies out in the country and they like country music. They're not going to want the same music that a hip, bohemian couple will want. And I definitely want to be aware of any "special" or "secretive" moments;

INVITATIONS
It's easy to forget about wedding invitations in the midst of planning everything else for your big day. However, an invitation is one of the first things a guest will see before the wedding, so you'll want to make a great first impression! Whether you hire a designer for custom stationery or pick from a predesigned assortment online, the options for finding the perfect invite are endless. Here you will find a variety of tips, timelines and a few local vendors to get you started on your invitation journey.

INVITATION ETIQUETTE QUESTIONS ANSWERED WHEN SHOULD WE SEND THEM OUT?
HOW TO POLITELY SAY “NO KIDS” AT THE WEDDING?
SHOULD WE GIVE EVERY GUEST A “PLUS-ONE?”
WHERE DO WE INCLUDE OUR REGISTRY INFO?
Plan to send them out eight to ten weeks before the big day. This gives guests enough time to make travel plans and clear their schedules if they live out of town. If you are sending out Save-theDate cards, they should go out six to eight months in advance.
Make sure to address the invitations by guest name, and not “and guest.” If the RSVP comes back with children’s names, make sure to give them a call and explain that the wedding is for adults only and you hope that they will still be able to make it to celebrate.
No, it is perfectly acceptable to invite friends or family members solo if they are not married or in a serious relationship. Make sure the invitation only has their name on it, and they will understand that bringing a “plus-one” is not appropriate.
It is considered impolite to put where you are registered on the actual wedding inviation. It can come across as though you are asking for gifts. Most people will put this information on a wedding website or on a separate card within their invitation.

ew things threaten to derail a wedding celebration faster than a lackluster, uninspiring DJ who doesn't connect with the bride and groom. Which just goes to show how important music is in our lives. If the soundtrack to your big day doesn't match the enormity of the occasion it can kill the vibe faster than you can say, "I do" -
and no one understands that better than DJ Shane Seniour of Seniour Events. The former USI basketball star founded his niche company in 2017 with the purpose of redefining the wedding DJ experience. And he's succeeded in spades. Along with partners Mitch Gilles and Tyler Sipes, Seniour's set about delivering a high-end, totally modern production quite unlike any other service in the area. "No more corny jokes" is the SE motto, in fact. Meaning these professional DJs - who excel at the fine art of mixing and beat-matching - put the focus squarely on the couple getting married; it's the newlyweds' time in the sun so the sole mission is to get the party started and to keep it going, sans unnecessary interruptions. Bad comedy routines on the mic are a thing of the past.
Seniour was kind enough to break down the process that leads to a perfect wedding soundtrack.

THE PLANNING APP When someone reaches out to us, I'll ask them what venue they're getting married at to get a feel for what kind of wedding this is going to be and, honestly, if we're going to be a good fit. I'm not afraid to say that because I want to make sure that we're catering to our brides and grooms. Once we get them booked - and this is my favorite part of the process we actually have a planning app. We're cutting edge - we like to bring this fresh, modern spin to the wedding DJ industry. So we send the bride a link to the app which is amazing. It's two sections - the questionnaire which goes through every detail, including an age matrix to get an idea for what kind of music we need - and personal and practical questions. But the music section is the coolest part. The app starts with the ceremony and offers suggested playlists for the entire day. Weddings are stressful enough - we want to eliminate all that. But couples can also upload Spotify playlists and invite future guests to recommend songs. It's all done from their phone.
IT'S SHOWTIME/THE GRAND ENTRANCE There's no room for error - so many things can go wrong but you can eliminate a lot of that by being prepared. We always have a backup plan. We go through a soundcheck the night before and the morning of, preferably. Once we get through the ceremony and start the cocktail hour, the guests are beginning to enjoy themselves. But the party really gets started with the grand entrance. This is one of my favorite parts of the night. We'll line the wedding party up outside, make sure they're all in order - re-check pronunciations of names. We find out if there's anything crazy that we need to know about. We make a point to tell them, 'Hey, you've planned for a year and a half, you're stressed - but now it's time to enjoy yourselves.' Entering the reception hall is when the party really starts. About 50% of the time the entrance music will be the same for all the couples, but I do have an option on the app where each couple entering can have their own song.
SPECIAL CEREMONIES Of all the special ceremonies, the garter removal is always the most fun. One thing that we do is ask the bride and groom what they're expecting - some weddings are very formal; some are "no rules." A mistake that I've seen other DJs make is inappropriately making comments, egging things on. If it's a formal wedding and you're out there making crude,

LAST FLING before the ring!
Vegas is wonderful, but Bachelorette Parties can come in all shapes and sizes. Each brideto-be has different interests, so grab your girls and plan a party she will enjoy. Here are a few ideas to get the party planning started.
be the best MAID of HONOR
Here are a few tips to make sure your BFF gets hitched without a glitch!
Invite the mother of the bride to this one!
WINE TASTING
Find a vineyard close to home, or make plans to travel for a wine-filled weekend away. Rent a limo and plan out your stops for a fun day of sipping with the girls!
CAMPING
With a bunch of ladies, this may be more like "glamping." Pack up and head out for a weekend off the grid. Those campfire stories will definitely tighten your girl squad bond.
BE THE BRIDE'S GO-TO GAL Reassure her that you're there for the fun moments but also the stressful ones, too. TRY TO ATTEND EVERYTHING Make yourself available to attend pre-wedding activities, especially bridal showers and bachelorette parties! KEEP TRACK OF GIFTS When the bride opens her gifts, you can jot down who got her what so she can write her thankyou notes later on.
SPA DAY
Schedule a group session with your favorite spa and have all the ladies join in maximum relaxation. The bride isn't the only one that needs some pampering!
GETAWAY WEEKEND
Rent an AirBNB that has enough beds for the whole group and spend the weekend watching chick flicks, seeing the sites, and chatting all night long!
Turn this one into a couples party!
BRUNCH
Wear your favorite colorful dress with matching hat, grab the entire squad, and drink bottomless mimosas while you cheers the bride's upcoming nuptials.

COOKING CLASS
Find a local cooking class and register for a private party. Not only will you learn something useful, but you won't even have to do the dishes when it's over!
KEEP EVERYONE ON TRACK Help to make sure that everything is running smoothly and on time, including hair and make up appointments for the bridal party. HOLD THE BOUQUET Hold on to the bride's bouquet during the ceremony. While you're at it, fluff that dress so her pictures turn out fab! MAKE SURE THE BRIDE EATS AND DRINKS With all the hustle and bustle, it will be easy to skip eating or get dehydrated. Make sure to check in and offer snacks to keep her going through the night. BE A PERSONAL RESTROOM ATTENDANT That dress may be beautiful, but she'll definitely need a helping hand when lifting it to use the restroom!

IMPROV IS DEAD (WEEKLY)
Comedians Dan White and Tim Lyons love improv comedy - so much so they adopt the title of “improv perverts.” In each episode guest comic(s) join the hosts for a 20 minute freeform conversation before deciding on a keyword to act as the engine for a half hour of comedy skits. What elevates Improv is Dead is a hefty dash of post-production in the form of sound effects. From background ambiance to establish scene location to lovingly-crafted fart jokes (and beyond), the extra layer of aural polish gives the podcast new life. improvisdead.com
THE BESTIES (WEEKLY)
Each week Polygon co-founders Russ Frushtick, Chris Plante, Justin McElroy, and Griffin McElroy play a game then gather together for a conversation. The hosts’ status as long-time journalists (former, in the case of the McElroys) brings much-needed discussions of context and comparison to the industry at large. Once retired, The Besties returned late 2019 as a Spotify-exclusive show that has now been freed from its contract. Now widely-available on the internet at large, the post-Spotify version of the show still has the same magic, just with an extra call-to-action spot asking for subscriptions and iTunes reviews. themcelroy.family/besties
THE HISTORY OF MALLS (MONTHLY)
Host Way Grimace loves malls and explores their impact and history using the story of a specific mall per episode as a jumping-off point. Prepare to be nostalgic for the bygone age of cruising the halls of Eastland Mall during its heyday as History of Malls peels back the years, celebrating monuments to 1980's consumerism. A show equally as entertaining for mall aficionados as it is for people who don’t know their anchor stores from their food courts. Fair warning, this is a Spreaker-hosted podcast so the occasional ad will insert itself at a seemingly random spot in the intro. historyofmalls.wixsite.

THE WORST SITCOM EVER MADE (COMPLETE)
From Radio New Zealand comes a glimpse into a 90's sitcom that’s hilarious for all the wrong reasons. A fledgling television network in New Zealand decided they wanted to capitalize on the success of mid-90's American multi-camera situational comedies (i.e., Friends and Seinfeld) becoming the mostwatched television shows by producing a distinctly Kiwi sitcom. It failed, hard. Follow lead writer Geoff Houtman as he interviews cast, crew, and network execs to tell the story of a show so bad several crew members left the country to escape its negative reputation. As fascinating as it is hilarious, the story of Melody Rules plays out like an incredibly low-stakes true crime podcast. rnz.co.nz/programmes/

BASKETBALL UNDERDOGS, TEEN MYSTERIES AND MYSTICAL JOURNEYS: APRIL TV IS COMING IN HOT
CRUEL SUMMER (4/20)
For a juicy teen soap, FreeForm is delivering with the Jessica Biel produced series, Cruel Summer. The show is set in the 90's, and I fully expect some Clueless-level outfits. And it’s got a Riverdaleworthy plot with promised time jumps. Set over three summers, the show challenges the audience to find out what happened to pretty and popular Kate Wallis; did nerdy girl Jeanette Turner have something to do with her disappearance? Aside from the killer looks this cast will serve up, the actors are insanely talented, including Cloak & Dagger alum Olivia Holt (Wallis) and Chiara Aurelia (Turner) in the two starring roles. Kevin Smith’s daughter Harley Quinn Smith, having already proven her teen acting chops in Yoga Hosers, also co-stars. Buckle up for plenty of twists and turns beginning with the first dose of campy teen drama on April 20.
BIG SHOT (4/16)
As someone who was born clumsy, I'm not typically the target audience for heartwarming coach and athlete stories. But something about the new Disney+ show Big Shot centered around John Stamos as Marvyn Korn, a temperamental college basketball coach who's fired and ends up taking a job coaching at an all-girls private high school, has me gravitating towards it. And it’s not just Uncle Jesse’s swooping Greek head of hair. I love that we'll get to watch young women shine as athletes and, inevitably, learn lessons from their coach, but also help the stoic man grow in his vulnerability. And did I mention they're called the Sirens? The show also features Community alum Yvette Nicole Brown and Glee graduate Jessalyn Gilsig, both hilarious and punchy in every joke delivery. The series is produced by David E. Kelley, the genius behind Big Little Lies. Is he starting a new TV franchise with this inspiring premise? Who knows, but tune in on April 16 to get the first glimpse.
SHADOW AND BONE (4/23)
For a mystical journey this spring, Netflix’s Shadow and Bone is going to be the adventure binge to beat. Based on the popular Grishaverse books, this new series is bringing to life rich characters living in two different countries: Ravka, ruled by the dictatorship of the Shadowfold, and Kerch, a flourishing yet criminal island. Newcomer Jessie Mei Li plays the titular role of Alina Starkov, an orphan and cartographer in the First Army. But she’s also been gifted with magical powers, able to manipulate light. Known as a Sun Summoner, she might be the only one who can defeat the Shadowfold. That’s a lot to handle for a young girl. I also love that this series is being led by a Chinese actress, so young Asian girls can see themselves as heroes, too. In contrast, the show also stars Ben Barnes as General Kirigan, leader of the Second Army. And while he's allegedly good, he's one of the select few who can control darkness. I wonder how this will end. Get ready to be transported on April 23.

MADISON BEER Life Support Epic I've been a huge fan of Madison Beer since I first listened to the revenge song “Hurts Like Hell” in 2018, accompanied by a killer soundtrack featuring hellhounds. So it’s a pleasure to finally be able to listen to her debut album, Life Support, which dropped February 26. It features 17 masterful tracks that showcase her writing and vocal range. “Selfish” is a gorgeous ballad with true, raw emotion that really gets you in your feels with, “Shouldn't love you, but I couldn't help it/ Had a feeling that you never felt it/ I always knew that you were too damn selfish.” “Effortlessly” is equally gorgeous and Beer sings it like an angel. “BOYSH*T” is another catchy song that should leave any boy who listens nervous: “I don't speak boysh*t/ You're always coming back but your love's poison/ So I think that I would rather just avoid it.” I wouldn’t sleep on Madison Beer if I were you. - Marisa Patwa
NICK JONAS Spaceman Island Records Ever since Nick Jonas hosted Saturday Night Live on February 27 and crooned out “Spaceman,” the titular track off his new album, I couldn't wait for the rest of the tracks to drop on March 12. Like many artists, Jonas crafted this album during quarantine, and it’s a love letter to human connections. It’s also a great follow up to 2016's Last Year Was Complicated and a nice departure from his reunion with the Jonas Brothers. But whether by himself or part of an ensemble, he's fantastic. “This is Heaven” plays like a Millennial Phil Collins song and Jonas absolutely delivers a sexy, take me to church vibe: “And I don't know how this could get much bettеr (Yeah)/ Than you and me, herе right now/ This is Heaven/ And every time I touch you, it gets better/ I'm on my knees, I can't stop now.” He then gives us a slow, mellow 80’s beat with “Deeper Love.” It’s almost like Jonas transcends space and time. He truly is a spaceman. - Marisa Patwa
ZARA LARSSON Poster Girl Epic/Record Company Ten Zara Larsson has had me hooked ever since I heard "WOW" in Netflix’s dance movie Work It in 2020. It’s an electric dance song that leaves you feeling feverish, but in a good way. The Swedish singer has insane vocals and she kills it on Poster Girl, her third studio album. “Right Here” is a hot club beat that will get your head banging. She dabbles with Auto-Tune in “I Need Love,” and while she doesn’t need that sugarcoating, it’s definitely a sweet song you could listen to while eating caramels at a candy shop with lyrics like, “Oh, I try to find other parts/ Of my broken heart/ But I can't without you/ Can we go right back to the start?/ If I let down my guard/ Maybe you're the one.” Best of all is “Stick With You,” a truly healing song. It’s almost like Larsson has superpowers. And she can save me with her music any day. - Marisa Patwa

SG LEWIS times PMR Records While British singer-songwriter/ producer SG Lewis has been working with some top-notch names since 2014, the 26-year-old is finally ready to take center stage - with the help of friends such as Niles Rodgers and Robyn. times begins as a second-rate attempt at Daft Punk-meets-Chromeo - opening track “Time” is pretty standard nightclub fare. Pleasant, but not essential. Same with the following track “Feed the Fire” - featured artist Lucky Daye delivers a solid vocal, but the production never seems to match his style. However, the latter tracks featuring British indie-popper Frances and Swedish dance queen Robyn give me faith that Lewis is on the right track. Frances gives a wonderfully airy and heavenly vocal performance on “Heartbreak on the Dancefloor” that brings the jungle-esque bop to life, while Robyn’s rich vocals on "Impact" give us a reintroduction to emotional Eurodance hits. Lewis definitely saves the best for last, diving into more trip hop, trance and Balearic beat domain before doing a complete 180 on “Fall” - a chamber pop ditty with distant guitars and a throbbing drum section that stands alone, unpredictably evolving as synthwave gives way to guitars and space rock elements; a beatific and divine finale. - Freddie Bourne
GRETA VAN FLEET The Battle at Garden’s Gate Lava/Republic Greta Van Fleet is the band that many compare to Led Zeppelin, and that’s not a bad thing. Any young band should want to be mentioned in the same breath as the mighty Zep. Yet this very comparison has brought criticism that they are trying too hard to sound like Zeppelin. With their third offering The Battle at Garden’s Gate (out April 16), it is clear that the Michigan rockers want to shrug off the comparisons. Based on admittedly fragmentary data (there are three songs available), I’ll offer a brief analysis of the new record. The first track released was “My Way, Soon.” This is an upbeat bluesy number that elicits comparisons to Rush’s first album again, not a bad thing. The second track released was “Age of Machine.” This is precisely why I love the band. The song is a midtempo track with an epic feel, ascending vocals and guitars. It’s what we’ve come to expect from them, and it’s great! Lastly is “Heat Above,” a poppy radio-friendly hit that will play well with their younger fanbase. We should all be thankful that in 2021 GVF is carrying the baton of guitar-driven hard rock to the next generation of young fans. - Matt Alschbach

KATY KIRBY Cool Dry Place Keeled Scales Texas native Katy Kirby, who recently became one of The Guardian’s "One to Watch" and Paste magazine’s “30 Best New Artists of 2020,” has released her debut studio album, a lofi, unapologetic rock collection that echoes Liz Phair’s acclaimed Exile in Guyville. What’s great about Cool Dry Place is that it sounds imperfect yet intimate - the band is tight but the production has moments of crunch when some of the songs get too heavy. Still, it captures Kirby’s true emotion and allows the listener to feel the authenticity of her stories. The album opens with “Eyelids" - which recalls Joan Osborne’s “One of Us” - with Kirby singing about prayer as if it was a voice memo, before having part of her band join in via overlay, which makes for an interesting introduction to the journey she's bringing us on. While this first track spells out sad-soul, Kirby delves into more upbeat fare throughout a majority of the record, mirroring the charismatic delivery of Soccer Mommy as well as the vocal performances of Regina Spektor and Katy Perry’s pre-fame Christian rock days. Standout track “Traffic!” has Spektor written all over it with more speed in Kirby's phrasing, while the production introduces vocal manipulation via vocoder similar to Eiffel 65. Yet the folk-rock vibe remains intact - like you're lounging on a beach, forgetting about the troubling times until a downshift to an organ-led bridge with all of the church-choir fixings puts us on edge, before diving back into the fun. Though Kirby does revert to more somber, waltzy sounds, she sidesteps full-on sorrow. Instead, her vocals play a more reserved role, while drums keep the interest with some Pretty Lights sparse piano and Feist-type guitar and vocal melodies. Imperfect yet intimate, indeed. - Freddie Bourne
Blues with Bragin LUCAS SPINOSA Friends & Legends Of Louisiana L & M Star Productions The album kicks off with “Beale Street Blues”. The saxophone from Jason Parfait and trumpet from Ian Smith set the tone as Parfait sings about going out for a good time on Saturday night. “While You’re Still Mine” features Parker James singing about not wanting to leave a lover. Parfait’s sultry saxophone adds a nice touch. Brian Brignac’s quick drumming on “Belly of the Beast” helps give the tune a great dancing rhythm. David Hyde also adds a funky bass line. “Want It to Be” features a great saxophone solo from Parfait. Bob Henderson’s guitar work on “I Believe” matches well with his vocals about not giving up. “Southern Side of Life” starts with great harmonica playing by special guest Kenny Neal as he sings about the joys of Southern living. Chris LeBlanc sings about hitting the highway on “Red Tail Lights on a Blues Highway.” Lucas Spinoza plays a stellar piano on “The Two of Us”. Spinoza’s phenomenal piano continues on “Living in a Fantasy” as Ryan Foret sings about wanting to hear great music from legendary performers. This album has something for everyone. Golden Ratio pours a hazy orange with a nice thick head. There are notes of stone fruit on the nose and a hint of pineapple, with those flavors continuing on the palate. It finishes with a nice malty sweetness, and a slight, lingering grapefruit-like bitterness. Our local brewery has done a nice job with this IPA.
A decent white head rests on this IPA and gradually dissipates. The citrus notes from the hops control the scent profile, with some pine also present. Hop flavors coat the tongue with the first sip and stay during the finish. The versatility of this beer lends itself to pairing with almost any food, from spicy Mexican fare to lighter dishes like salads, Cheddar and blue cheeses or a spicy tuna roll.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4
This beer pours a hazy amber color and I can smell the clover, honey and citrus. Similar to the aroma, the taste offers fresh lime zest, honey, pineapple and some hops. This beer is pretty smooth to drink but like most IPAs, the hops just sort of numb the taste buds.

I’ve always loved Goose Island and 312 has been a go-to for me. But this lemony take on one of their signature beers doesn't resonate with me quite as much - though I can see it being a favorite during the warmer months ahead. Pours a hazy, golden hue, with a thin head and a heavy lemonade flavor. Try it for yourself.
A thick white head forms on this beer and stays for a long time. The scent profile contains a good amount of lemon. The initial taste contains a balance of lemon and sugar with minimal carbonation. This beer could see a rise in popularity during the brutal heat of the summer months, and the low alcohol content lends itself to having several. Pair it with your favorite lemon desserts like lemon squares or lemon meringue pie.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5
Goose Island always brings out solid beers. But like my fellow reviewer Mr. Hollyfeld, I'm not quite as keen on the lemony approach to 312. But I also agree that it could be refreshing during the summertime when a session beer goes down smooth in the heat of the day. I'll have to revisit this offering in the coming months.

HALF ACRE DAISY CUTTER PALE ALE
PAUL HOLLYFELD - 4
Pours a clean, clear orange-yellow hue with a decent head. It has piney hop notes on the nose that continue on the palate with a slight bitterness. It finishes with a clean, dry finish. While I didn’t find this new offering from Half Acre remarkable, I would still order a second one.
PAUL BRAGIN - 4
A thick white head tops this pale ale and evaporates slowly. Hop scents like pine and mango fill the nose without becoming overpowering. The first sip seems to have a balance of malt and hops, but the hops come through much stronger in the long finish. Fans of pale ales will want to try this year-round offering. Pair it with sausages, maple-glazed carrots, sweet potatoes, or a variety of cheeses like Asiago, brick, Camembert or Colby.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 3.5
This beer pours a clear golden color with decent carbonation. I can smell a little grapefruit and some other fruits but they seem to be mixed in. I can taste grapefruit and pine with some earthy tones. Overall, it's fairly dry but not over the top. I'd say it's better than your average pale ale.

A thick white head crowns this IPA and never totally disappears. A burst of pine hop notes with some citrus notes dominates the scent. More of the bitter hop notes hit the tongue when sipping the beer, but the hops become muted in the long finish.
People who enjoy hoppy IPAs will definitely want to drink this one. Pair it with a variety of spicy foods like Mexican dishes or Asian cuisine.
JABEZ MARTINEZ - 4
This beer is a hazy gold color with a slight amber tint to it. I can smell some tropical fruits, pineapple, orange and some grapefruit. The taste is pretty much like the nose - it's really flavorful and pretty easy to drink. The malts bring out some bread flavors. Not bad for a beer I hadn't heard of before.
PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

Q: If I die and my kids are under 18, will my ex-wife (mother of my kids) get everything if I don't have a will? A: Not necessarily. If a person is divorced, an ex-spouse is not legally entitled to receive anything from the deceased
person's estate. Under the intestacy statutes, everything would go to the child or children, in equal shares. As a practical matter, however, without a will, the ex-spouse may be the most likely person to become the custodian of
those funds for the kids, who can't own property in their own names until they reach age 18. In such a situation, the ex may be tempted to use some of that money for themselves, rather than for the kids' benefit. With a will, you can
appoint another person whom you'd prefer to have control of the money until your kids turn 18 (or later, with a trust). In addition, even if you do have a will which named your spouse as a beneficiary, and later get divorced from that
person, Indiana law will write the ex-spouse out of the will, treating them as if they had died first. This isn't the case with all assets, however. For example, an ex may still be entitled to receive the proceeds of a life insurance policy, if
you don't change the beneficiary on the policy after the divorce. Divorce, like the birth of a child, is a major life event that offers a good opportunity to review your situation and see if you need to create a new estate plan or update one you already have.
