LIVE AT THE VICTORY THEATRE / MAY 29 / 8 PM

S

ome comedians need only look at an audience to get a laugh, and there are few better examples than Chris Tucker. The former Def Jam comic’s facial expressions and body movements (try not cracking up when he mimics Michael Jackson) are often just as funny as his punch lines – which are gold, by the way. It’s no wonder then that Hollywood took notice as his stand-up career really started to take off in the early to mid 90s; Tucker was cast in The Meteor Man and House Party 3 before hitting the jackpot with Friday. Even today, people yell out “Smokey” when they see the 43-year-old Georgia native in the street. And if you don’t know what that’s in reference to, you’re probably not much of a fan (or maybe you just woke up from a coma). Either way, do yourself a favor and rent the movie. There’s a good reason it’s considered a cult classic.

6|

As unexpectedly successful as Friday turned out to be (after seeing an initial cut, Tucker was convinced it would bomb), the Rush Hour franchise dwarfed its earnings and became an international phenomenon. It also made Tucker, albeit briefly, the highest paid actor in Hollywood. But after starring in three blockbuster films alongside Jackie Chan – the last in 2007 – he was burned out and, ironically, in a financial mess. It was the classic story of too much, too soon – especially

May 2015 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

too much. Tucker went off the rails and dropped out of sight for several years before reappearing in the Oscar-nominated Silver Linings Playbook. His small but critically lauded role as Danny McDaniels displayed a dramatic side only hinted at before and seemed to signal a new phase in Tucker’s career. But in fact, he was already making a U-turn right back to where he started: the stage. On the surface, it appeared to be a step backwards; however, his return to stand-up comedy would be a rebirth. Profanity was a big part of Tucker’s act in the early days, including constant use of the N-word, the dropping of F-bombs and much more. But that would all change when he rejoined the circuit in 2011. Having reevaluated his life and the direction he was heading, Tucker made the decision to quit cursing cold turkey and enter a new era of clean comedy. It was a surprising move considering that his biggest influence, Richard Pryor, was the king of off-color jokes, but he pulled it off and almost five years later, Tucker’s comeback is complete. His shows sell-out everywhere he goes, and his comedy, while still edgy, reaches a wider audience. Through it all, one thing has remained the same: Chris Tucker is a funny mofo. - TE For ticket info, visit thevictorytheatre.com. The Victory Theatre is located at 600 Main St.

Flying the metal flag for Denmark, Volbeat marches into the Ford Center on May 19 along with “Big Four” member Anthrax and hard-rocking newcomers, Crobot. The Danish band has scored numerous hits, including “A Warrior’s Call,” “Heaven Nor Hell” and “Lola Montez,” carving out an unmistakable sound influenced by the likes of Cash and Presley but punctuated by modern, heavy riffs. After laying low for a number of years, Anthrax made a big comeback with 2011’s Worship Music, a timely masterpiece that shook thrash fans everywhere awake. Work continues on the follow-up, but the band is taking a break from recording to play some shows and recharge the batteries. Drummer Charlie Benante kindly spoke with News4U about all things Anthrax, including record company woes, hanging out with Kiss and life after the grunge era. 2015 marks the 25th anniversary of Persistence of Time, one of the band’s best albums. Have you considered marking the milestone in any way? Nope. I’m basically going to throw Universal Records under the bus here. I’ve tried and tried and tried to get some things done with re-releasing, re-mastering and putting on bonus tracks for that album and Spreading the Disease and State of Euphoria, etc., but Universal doesn’t want to pay for anything.

10 |

It sucks, because I feel like we’re being held hostage. It’s something that the fans probably want to hear, and it’s something that I’ve wanted to do for years now. All these record companies want to do now is sell to Spotify and make the money there while the bands don’t make sh*t. Speaking of Persistence, I first gravitated to Anthrax after hearing the band’s cover of Joe Jackson’s “Got the Time” from that album – a surprising but inspired choice. I was a huge Joe Jackson fan since the first time I heard him. I used to listen to WNEW in my mom’s basement and on Sunday nights they would play stuff from England. The first things I heard by him were “Sunday Papers” and “Is She Really Going Out with Him?” and I immediately liked those songs, so I went

May 2015 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

down to the village and bought his album Look Sharp – it came with a button. The album was so awesome to me because it had a real punk sound and style and yet it had this pop, melodic side to it. And I remember being really taken aback by the bass player. Fast forward to when we were making Persistence, and I told the guys we had to do “Got the Time,” because it’s (bleeping) awesome. We’ve always done covers since the beginning of the band – there’s just something about doing those songs that improves your chops, and they’re just fun to do. We did a Kiss tour in ’87 and we told Gene and Paul that we were going to cover “Parasite.” They thought that was cool, and I’ll never forget when we were at Electric Lady doing the mix of it and Gene came down to hang with us and play ping pong. It was one of those experiences where my feet weren’t on the ground – I was floating because I was so excited about Gene being in the room. If 12-year-old me had known that was going to happen...never would have believed it. There was a big gap – about eight years – between We’ve Come for You All and your most recent album, 2011’s Worship Music. Was there a concern that you were entering the dreaded G ‘N R Chinese Democracy territory? Yeah, it starts to (bleep) with you a little bit. And also with technology being the way it is, Cont. on page 12

Cont. from page 10 you’re not in the studio on a daily rate, having to get sh*t done. The luxury of having the studio in your home is that you can take your time – and that has good and bad things about it. But with Worship Music I think we really needed some time to let it breathe. With the new record we’re working on, we’re going to take a break in recording to do some shows and then re-evaluate what we have and put it in perspective – look at everything together and get a feel for the strongest/weakest material. I think this record more so than past records leans towards our thrashier side. There are two songs that are bookends – one turned out to be a song called “You Gotta Believe” and the other is called “Evil Twin” – because it’s kind of the sister to the other one. Those two songs are very thrashy and could probably be on Among the Living or Persistence. And then there’s a song that is one of our fastest ever – lightning speed – but it’s good and really melodic as well. I’m really happy with it. You’ve cited Nirvana’s Nevermind as one of your favorite records. What was the band’s experience like dealing with the grunge revolution and the complete change of the musical landscape? It wasn’t until their album In Utero that things started to change for metal. That’s when some a-hole decided to call Nirvana and all those bands “alternative.” And then “heavy metal” became a bad word. I thought was just really hypocritical because all those bands coming out and making that music were all metal heads and were probably watching Whitesnake videos and sh*t (laughs). It was just like, really? You’re going to color your hair and dress all different now and be a (bleeping) chameleon and close the door on your past? It was all downhill from there. – TE For ticket info, visit thefordcenter.com. The Ford Center is located at 1 SE MLK Jr. Blvd.

The Ford Center / May 12 @ 7 PM Last month’s epic Guns & Hoses battle at the Ford Center set the stage for the war to come – a long-awaited showdown between the WWE’s biggest superstars on May 12, featuring Roman Reigns, Intercontinental Champion Daniel Bryan, Dolph Ziggler, WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins, Kane, Bad News Barrett and many more. Prepare yourself for a wild night of action both inside and outside the ring; bodies will fly and blood will flow. And as always, the taunts between the crowd and the wrestlers will be worth the price of admission alone. Forget boundaries - SmackDown is full-on and anything can happen. For over 15 years, WWE SmackDown has been a staple of evening television, drawing huge ratings and interest both here and abroad with its larger than life cast of characters that has included The Rock and John Cena, two prime time wrestlers that helped to launch the show. SmackDown broadcasts in seven different nations and boasts an extremely dedicated fan base, but nothing compares to seeing these elite athletes go head to head in person; only then can you fully appreciate the physicality of the sport. Despite the showmanship, the matches are brutal and bruising. Yes, the WWE Superstars are paid to entertain, but inside the ropes, they’re all business. In other words, it’s not all fun and games; the pain is very real. Experience SmackDown in the best way possible – live in front of a raucous crowd. Cheer on the good guys, boo the villains and marvel at the spectacle. Not bad for a Tuesday night. For ticket info, visit thefordcenter.com. *Talent subject to change.

heads the chaotic and often hilarious charge to save Elizabeth Swann from her undead captors. The film’s sense of adventure and timely comedy connected with fans of all ages leading to a run of sequels that ultimately grossed close to four billion dollars.

This is it – the final two performances of the 2014-2015 EPO season. Over the last nine months, Maestro Savia and the area’s best orchestra have taken us on an unforgettable journey, covering a remarkable stretch of musical ground. It all began back in September with an incredible display of artistry by Project Trio on opening night. Backed by the EPO, their high octane mix of jazz, hip-hop and rock set the tone for the Philharmonic’s most diverse season ever. What followed was a string of dynamic performances highlighting everyone from Beethoven, Mozart and Tchaikovsky to the Rolling Stones, Nashville’s finest songwriters and American Idol finalists - even the orchestra itself was showcased in March as the musicians took center stage. It’s all led up to the grand finale of Disney Live in Concert: Pirates of the Caribbean, a cinematic experience like none other. 2003’s The Curse of the Black Pearl was the very definition of a Hollywood blockbuster. Based on the theme park ride of the same name, it introduced movie-goers to Johnny Depp’s most beloved character: Captain Jack Sparrow, a pleasantly demented pirate who

In addition to a great storyline and first rate acting, Curse of the Black Pearl also featured an engrossing soundtrack that added layers of tension and release. Now, imagine watching this Disney classic on the big screen at the Victory Theatre with live accompaniment by the EPO - with the full power of the orchestra driving the action. That’s what you’re in store for when the Philharmonic’s season comes to a close on May 16 & 17. Just like the Pirates franchise, these final performances are guaranteed to entertain the entire family, so bring the kids along for an awe-inspiring cinematic experience that they’ll never forget! And speaking of young people, the Evansville Philharmonic Youth Orchestra will present its annual spring concert at the Victory Theatre on May 3 at 3 p.m. Every year, the area’s most talented young musicians come together for a stirring performance that showcases the best of the best. Come out and enjoy an afternoon of beautiful music and support music education in our community. Restaurant Spotlight beST

MArgAriTA S

iN TOWN!

Cancun Mexican Restaurant 341 S. Green St., Henderson, KY 270.826.0067 Cancun bills itself as a ‘Food Paradise’ and that’s a pretty spot-on description of this Henderson favorite. Over the last seven years, the restaurant has grown through word of mouth, building a loyal following of patrons that keep coming back for both the food and the hospitality (friendly servers wearing shirts with the slogan “I Love My Yob!” is just one example of the lighthearted, fun atmosphere). Manager Marcos Nicolas has been there since day one. Wearer of many hats, he not only made the decorative tables that fill the restaurant by hand but also installed the floor. Heck, he even suggested the name. Though born in Mexico City, Nicolas soon moved to Cancun with his family and spent many years there. He arrived in America about 15 years ago but has never forgotten that beautiful city on the Caribbean Sea. And yet, perhaps his greatest contribution has been to the menu that draws people in from all over the tri-state. Nicolas adapted a number of his mother’s recipes, creating classic Mexican dishes with an American touch (translation: larger portions). Anyone who frequents Cancun knows that the plates are huge; each meal is effectively three meals for the price of one. You can eat cheaply all day, every day, but the best deal without a doubt is the lunch special for just $6.60 (includes soft drink). There are over 20 dishes to choose from, including Cancun’s biggest seller, Burrito Kentucky, plus Chimichanga, Pancho Villa,

32 |

May 2015 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Quesadilla Fajitas, Fiesta Pollo Salad and so much more. It’s virtually impossible to go anywhere in the tri-state and get so much food for so little. Speaking of so much food… When I visited the restaurant recently, I was greeted with a sampler to end all samplers. Actually, ‘sampler’ is the wrong word. I was served four entire separate meals – the jewels of the Cancun menu: crowd-pleaser Burrito Kentucky, Chimichanga, Paella with cheese sauce and my absolute favorite, Rio Grande (and let’s not forget the chips and salsa, of course – I could snack on those for days). They say a picture is worth a thousand words; which is good, because I was left speechless. Where to even begin? I finally came to my senses and dug in, quickly understanding why Cancun has so many repeat customers. As I enjoyed bite after bite of each signature dish, one of the servers kindly noted that the perfectly prepared food was no fluke – everybody gets the royal treatment at this restaurant! The only thing missing from my visit was a famous Cancun Margarita (I was on the clock, after all). I strongly suggest that you pair one or two (maybe three?) with your meal of choice. And definitely make it a point to stop in on your birthday. These guys know how to celebrate; just take a look at their Facebook page for proof. - TE

n keeping with the development of Franklin Street, Pistons is rapidly growing. The popular nightclub already hosts some of the best live music and caters to a variety of crowds with a roomy dance floor, but now they’ve got a new edge: a fantastic menu to complement the impressive 86 beers on tap. With new dishes, Pistons has become one of those rare hotspots where you don’t have to abandon your fun to eat delicious food, and Executive Chef Dontae Hines is just as excited as we are. “We try to be outside of the box. I might be making something for today, but I’m already thinking about what I’m going to make tomorrow. It’s my laboratory!” he says. Mozzarella sticks were first up, but not the standard fare; they are huge, hand-breaded and fresh. The Italian style seasoning adds just the right flavor, with a slight crunch leading into a generous amount of gooey mozzarella cheese. Served with tangy marinara, they’re not your freezer variety, chemically-laced sticks. Admittedly, I’ve never had ground lamb, so the next dish was a first for me. The lamb burger features lean, spicy meat, topped with homemade mango chutney. The sweet/sour of the chutney cuts the saltiness of the meat, and the cream cheese balances out the moisture, with fresh tomato, red onion and spinach for crunch. Adding even more crunch, the hand-cut French fries are crisp and hot with a flavorful Creole seasoning. Best of all, the buns - baked fresh by the Edgewater Grille - are beyond delicious. BBQ pizza was supposed to be the final menu item I tried, but Chef Dontae insisted that I also try a regular cheese pizza. You’ll understand why when you taste it. The sauces, BBQ and pizza respectively, as well as the crust, are all crafted in-house. The BBQ pizza is a smoky pie loaded with 3-day marinated pulled pork, ham, bacon, pineapple, and mozzarella. Two saucy thumbs up! The kitchen opens daily at 11 a.m. with plate lunch specials and stays open until 10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday for the party crowd. Grab a Pistoli or a Westsider or one of their many signature Fireball cocktails and enjoy! With two bars, dancing, live music and DJs, a full menu was the final component needed to make Pistons one of the best spots on Franklin. – Whitney Patterson

May Craft Beer of the Month:

Magic Hat Brewery’s Big Hundo IPA Distributed out of South Burlington, Vermont, the Big Hundo IPA is Magic Hat Brewery’s 100 IBU (International Bittering Units) India Pale Ale. It’s a limited release beer that was only offered to 10 locations in Indiana; the only place in this market where you can find it is at Beef ‘O’ Brady’s. Made with Apollo, Simcoe and Centurion hops to give it that smooth IPA bitterness and nice floral character, the Big Hundo is aptly named for its 100 IBUs. The appearance, a pleasant, deep amber orange, is paired with a wonderful citrus aroma that contains a hint of floral; a subtle malt sweetness is just enough to balance out the bitterness of the IBUs but also allows for the Apollo and Simcoe hops to stand out. The Big Hundo is a big IPA with a 9% ABV (Alcohol by Volume) that gives you a nice, warm feeling in the finish. Don’t be scared to branch out and try new things. Ask your local bar for a sample of what they have on tap. I often hear the remark, “I don’t like dark beers,” because lots of folks have the impression that they all have an extremely aggressive taste. That is simply not the case. Craft beer is a lot like wine. You need to try different varieties and find out what is pleasing to your palate. For more info about great craft beers and where to find your favorites, visit findmytap.com and download the app to your smartphone or tablet. You can track your favorite beers and find out which tri-state businesses have them on tap. You can also search for your favorite bar and find out what they have on tap right now.

Evansville Philharmonic Guild Homes of Note House Tour West Side/Wabash Ave.

May 16th, 2015

The annual Homes of Note House Tour always comes at the perfect time, just as spring is in full bloom and the weather is perfect for getting outside and visiting some of the most beautiful and historic homes in the tri-state. For the 17th year running, the Evansville Philharmonic Guild has a fantastic day planned for everyone with a west side open house on Wabash Avenue that features eight homes dating as far back as 1894. The tour includes a stroll through St. Boniface Church (founded by a German speaking congregation in 1883 and the fourth Catholic church built in Evansville) and grotto homes built by lumber mill owners and business men for their families. With breathtaking stained glass windows and immaculately restored woodwork plus modern touches, these beautiful homes are a must-see for anyone interested in our city’s history or for those who just simply appreciate incredible skill and craftsmanship. The EPG Homes of Note House Tour is a family friendly event, ideal for all ages. It’s a great opportunity to get out and see a different side of the city and get a feel for how people lived over a century ago. For more info, contact Julie Mallory at 812-867-0912 or email j-mallory @ twc.com. Tickets are $15 in advance and can be purchased at Schnucks, any First Federal Savings Bank in SW Indiana, Paul’s Menswear, Wildflower or the Evansville Philharmonic Box Office (812-425-5050). Tickets are $20 on the day of the tour.

Germania Maennerchor 62nd Saengerfest Victory Theatre • May 30 / 5:30 PM

Germania Maennerchor will host their 62nd Saengerfest May 30 at the Victory Theatre in Evansville. The singing festival will be held for the Southern Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois district. The main event will feature a choir of approximately 300 singers performing songsfromthe18ththroughthe20thcentury. Germania Maennerchor was founded by four men of German heritage in 1900 who wanted to preserve their culture through songs and in word. The organization grew rapidly and joined the Southern Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois District in 1950. Accommodations were eventually made for those who didn’t sing but wanted to be part of the organization. Social memberships and the Ladies Auxiliary were formed and in 1945, the Damenchor (Ladies Choir) was created. The first Saengerfest was held in the 1920s, and the last Saengerfest in this district was held in 2000. Germania Maennerchor clubs from Springfield, Dayton, Cincinnati, Louisville, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis and Peoria will converge in Evansville to partake in the event. The choir will be comprised of both men and women who will sing “Die Lotusblume,” “Das Morgenrot,” “Alte Kameraden” and many other traditional German songs. Evansville’s very own Rhine Valley Brass Band will accompany the choir on certain songs. - Russell Finn For ticket info, visit victorytheatre.com. The Victory is located at 600 Main St. in downtown Evansville.

N i W e N S ’ T A H WWestern Kentucky Audubon Mill Park / Central Park & Various Locations - June 13-20 2015 is a very special anniversary for one of the area’s most popular events. The W.C. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival turns 25 this year, and organizers are marking this major milestone with an incredible lineup of local, regional and national acts, including the Devon Allman Band, Doyle Bramhall II, Victor Wainwright and headliner Robert Randolph & The Family Band. The week-long celebration of the blues gets rolling on Saturday, June 13 with a concert in Central Park featuring Street Strut Parade, Lindsey Williams, BLUES 4 U, Hog Maw Blues Band and Boscoe France Band. Still one of the largest free festivals in the nation, W.C. Handy kicks off every year with the Taste of Henderson Barbecue, a highlight of the packed schedule. Local teams cook up and sell some of the best BBQ for miles as festival goers enjoy the opening day performers. It always puts everyone in a great mood and sets the tone for the rest of the week’s events which include a Mardi Gras Street Strut, Handy Lunch Breaks at local eateries, lectures, dance classes and much more. It all leads up to the final three days and nights of fantastic music at Audubon Mill Park – favorites like Chubby Carrier & The Bayou Swamp Band, The Beat Daddys and Guy Forsyth. And it’s worth mentioning again that the 25th edition of the W.C. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival will close with a white-hot set from the incomparable Robert Randolph & The Family Band. Enough said. et in an unassuming location just off Highway 54 is one of Owensboro’s true hidden treasures. Carleos is great for so many reasons - it’s the total restaurant package - but what struck me instantly was the outburst of hospitality. Sisters Mariela and Carla aren’t just there to ensure this family owned and operated business runs smoothly; they put a premium on creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The decor is upscale and modern, but the vibe is home kitchen. Open since October 2013, Carleos has become a favorite of traveling foodies and local families alike. Besides the obvious quality of their dishes and comfortable ambiance, their presentation is unrivaled. The family has perfected the practice of creating a menu that is made-from-scratch, affordable and visually stunning. If you enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine, they are an obvious choice, with family recipes from Jalisco and Michoacán, but the options don’t stop there. They pride themselves on fusion, boasting dishes with Thai, Mediterranean, Cuban, Asian, and Italian influences. Pro-tip: Go for their paella (but don’t forget about dessert). Bursting with flavor, this traditional meal is served still bubbling in a lava stone bowl. Rice, onions, bell peppers, and shrimp stew in red curry, adorned with delicious mussels. It’s almost too pretty to eat, until you take the first bite. With my lime grilled salmon, I had to try the fried yucca, a root with a consistency similar to potato, but with a crispier outside and creamier inside, served with a special Cuban sauce. Continuing on the road less traveled, fried plantains were the side dish for my Chicken Supreme, an apt description; marinated, grilled chicken breast smothered with mushrooms, onions, peppers and cheese. An unusual fare for our area, the plantains, or tostones, were the best I’ve had since leaving California. Of course, with hospitality comes enough food to feed a small army. I also enjoyed shrimp fajitas with all of the trimmings and a featured chicken quesadilla. To quench my thirst, I was served an Infusion, a coconut-melon Carleos original cocktail, a strawberry cheesecake martini, and of course, a traditional lime margarita on the rocks. To finish off the meal, dessert was a work of art; a crunchy cheesecake churro served with vanilla ice cream and decorated beautifully. From start to finish, the experience was five stars. With new menu items and featured items daily, make sure to follow Carleos on Facebook so that you don’t miss out on what this one-of-a-kind establishment has to offer. – Whitney Patterson

Already a cherished part of the Owensboro cultural landscape, the International Bluegrass Music Museum (IBMM) is getting a major upgrade. Governor Steve Beshear recently announced that the state of Kentucky will provide the additional $5 million needed to get the $15.3 million project underway and begin construction on a new International Bluegrass Music Center. Groundbreaking is scheduled for later this summer, with completion expected in 2017. The project has been in the works since 2012, receiving great support from the citizens of Owensboro who treasure bluegrass music and wish to see its rich history acknowledged and celebrated. The new Center aims to do that and more. It will house an exciting and vastly improved new museum, as well as the International Bluegrass Hall of Fame, a 500seat state-of-the-art concert hall reminiscent of the Grand Ole Opry (featuring live music every Saturday night), an international hall, teaching rooms, a research library and a rooftop restaurant overlooking the Ohio River. The popularity of bluegrass music has reached new heights both here and in countries all over the world; there’s never been a better time to expand the horizons of the IBMM. In fact, Governor Beshear referred to the project as a “rebirth.” To facilitate the expansion and ensure that the Center’s future is secure, the City of Owensboro is providing a free 99year lease to the museum for the prime riverfront property – an entire city block – as well as contributing $3 million to the project. It goes without saying that this is a dream come true for the IBMM and fans of bluegrass music. For more info, visit bluegrassmuseum.org.

8 Archery Expert Kendylle Wright

5th Grader at Bend Gate Elementary Henderson, KY How many 10-year-olds do you know who can handle a bow and arrow like a pro? No doubt the answer is very few, if any. So let me introduce you to Kendylle Wright, a second year member of the Bend Gate archery team. Make no mistake; this little Gator’s aim is true. Kendylle has won numerous tournaments over the last year in the female elementary division and made her mark in both the regional and state competition, placing first and third, respectively. She also recently competed in Best of Bluegrass in Midway, KY – one of only 100 female elementary shooters invited. Next up is Nationals on May 9 in Louisville where Kendylle looks to target another victory. So what does this 5th grader with pinpoint accuracy like to do in her spare time? Play more sports, of course – she enjoys soccer and basketball – but Kendylle also loves to draw, go shopping, hang out at Sky Zone and spend time with friends. Most of all, she loves to play with her two Pomeranians, Annabelle and Sugar. Archery may not be the most popular sport for kids, especially young girls, but Kendylle really enjoys being part of a team and the fact that you don’t have to have special skills to get started. Plus, she gets to travel, meet new people and see new places. Let’s all wish good luck to Kendylle at Nationals and future archery competitions. The sky’s the limit for this Kentucky sharp shooter! - TE

Bars, bakeries, cafes and restaurants all welcomed patrons to take in the beauty of spring while enjoying the delicious food and drink options that downtown has to offer. As the area has grown, more and more businesses have introduced outdoor dining as a feature of their overall experience. The list of places with patios in the downtown area includes Backstage Bar & Grill, Bokeh Lounge, Just Rennie’s Catering & Cookie Co., Piece of Cake, Penny Lane Coffeehouse, Ri Ra Irish Pub, Sauced and many more. Patio Opening Day drew big crowds to downtown Evansville in anticipation of the outdoor dining season as well as the special events and great deals on tap. Numerous establishments offered food and drink discounts and free samples plus live entertainment by local musicians as patrons partied into the night. In addition, some businesses donated a percentage of their proceeds to charity. It was a great example of just how much can be accomplished when everyone works together for the good of the community. Now that the outdoor dining season is in full swing and the weather just keeps better and better, there’s no excuse to miss out on all the amazing patios that line downtown Evansville. This is the perfect time to experience the food, drinks and atmosphere of the city’s most up and coming area.

After my wreck and loss of my leg, it was hard for me to hold up two wheels, so I started my search for a trike. I just about gave up at one point, because all of the trikes looked the same to me. Then I saw this one in an ad from Houston, and I knew it was perfect for me. I called the seller up, asked him a few questions about it, and we agreed on a fair price. I told him I’d be there in about 15 hours to pick it up. He thought I was joking until I rang his doorbell 16 hours and over 900 miles later (Houston traffic was bad that day). I asked him to fire it up, and it was a done

deal. I’ve always been into the custom chopper look and needed something to fit me well since I’m 6’7”. It’s a custom build by Angelina Customs out of Huntington, TX - the only one like it that he built. I’m looking forward to restoring it this fall with a completely different paint scheme. It definitely stands out when I’m out riding or at a local bike night. It’s just fun to ride, and it has put me back into the wind!

ace season is now in full swing and the area tracks are seeing some amazing racing! If you have yet to visit one of the local tracks, you are really missing out!

This month I want to address a subject I am often asked about by racers: sponsorship. We will also talk about a project a friend of mine is doing on the history of tri-state racing. Strap in and read on! Many of the racers on a local level depend on sponsorship to build and maintain a race machine; however, most are unaware how to obtain or even maintain a sponsor. Almost on a daily basis I see someone basically begging for sponsors as I scroll through my news feed on Facebook . The majority of the time this will NOT work! Sure, some may get friends that will help them out, but this is not the proper way to approach sponsors. Now more than ever, the economy is forcing companies to cut back on their advertising dollars, and they must spend wisely. Yes, it is a proven fact that race fans are the most product-loyal fans in any sport on a national level; however, so many businesses have been burned by one-and-done race teams that they are now gun-shy. A team must maintain a professional reputation to obtain sponsorship from a company. If you are one of the lucky teams to land a sponsor you must remember that you are a spokesman for that company and/or product. It IS NOT what a company can do for you, it IS what YOU can do for a company! if you expect a company to give you

100% you better be prepared to give them 150% in return. Make a professional proposal/resume to present the prospective sponsor and try setting up a meeting with the person in charge of advertisement. Treat the meeting as a job interview. You also need to make yourself available for public appearances for the business and be as involved in public showings as possible. Make sure the sponsor feels like part of the team and is kept current on race results and plans for your season. There are so many other things that YOU the racer can do, but we don’t have enough magazine to cover it. When it comes to sponsorship, one of the most successful racers in the tri-state is my friend, Phillip Oakley, of Oakley Motorsports in Owensboro. Phillip and his team have maintained a 14 year relationship with Texas Roadhouse. This hasn’t been done by simply placing their logo on his car. Among other things, Phillip and his team make hundreds of personal appearances and keep a clean and presentable transporter and car. Phillip also makes sure the crew is dressed in uniforms with sponsor logos at every event they attend. Just Google his name and take a look for yourself at what a PROFESSIONAL race team looks like. Tim Ivan Jerome and his wife Amy are currently working on a project about the history of tri-state racing. They have successfully Cont. on page 72

If you have photos or info about the tri-state’s auto or motorcycle racing history, please look Tim up on Facebook and set up a meeting to help out. As time goes on, this project is going to be a huge asset to the communities across the tri-state. In closing, I would like to say a big congrats to Island, KY’s Pat Freels on the recent announcement of his induction into the Kentucky Motorsports Hall of Fame. Pat is a world champion multi-engine pulling tractor pilot from years gone by and once drove the “Dollar Devil” for (what was) the National Tractor Pullers Association. And Owensboro’s own J.D. Beach picked up his FIRST Super Sport win during the month of April at the Circuit of Americas in Austin, TX during the MotoGP weekend. Way to go J.D.!!!! Until next month, make sure to get out and support your local tracks and racers and keep the sport alive! Don’t forget to tune in every Tuesday night at 7pm for Regional Motorsports Power Hour on 102.7 The Game ESPN Owensboro or 94.7 WBIO as I keep you up to speed with EVERYTHING in regional racing! Peace!

T

he Owensboro arts community has long been familiar with indie filmmaker P.J. Starks, but more and more, his name is drawing attention throughout the tri-state and on a national level with the release of his latest project, the horror anthology Volumes of Blood.

After “dabbling” in the visual arts for years, Starks got serious in 2008. “That’s when I wrote and directed my first real effort, Hallows Eve: Slaughter on Second Street,” he says. “Reviews were kind of mixed, and I was new to all of that, so I took the bad ones personally.” Determined to prove the few naysayers wrong, Starks set about crafting a more substantive story, minus the gore and light on the screams. The result, 2011’s A Mind Beside Itself, was hailed as a superbly directed, taut psychodrama. “It was more of a niche film and got less reviews, but all of them were exceptionally good,” Starks explains. “It played a lot of festivals – even in Times Square in New York. I felt that I had accomplished my goal.” Rather than jump straight into another project, Starks used the success of A Mind Beside Itself to “open the floodgate” for independent film in Owensboro. He began networking and organizing local events such as the hugely popular “Unscripted” series at the Daviess County Library (an Evansville version now exists). “The purpose is to set up a venue where artists can come in and show their work,” Starks says. He also spearheaded the bi-annual River City Festival of Films, headlined last year by RoboCop star Peter Weller, and furthered his production skills.

wide range of reactions – exactly what Starks had in mind. “The movie covers all the types of horror – the classic ghost story, the slasher tale, etc. Everyone had their favorite,” he says. Initial feedback was positive, but the Facebook comments, in particular, really excited Starks. “When lines from Volumes of Blood started getting quoted online, that’s when we knew we were on to something,” he says. big name in horror from Louisville, to help create an anthology of fright that would satisfy all fans of the genre. “I’d wanted to do [Volumes of Blood] for years but nothing ever coalesced,” Starks says. “I didn’t want to be the only one directing and writing.” The three developed a storyline about a Theology student who attends an urban legend class and gets inspired to write his thesis about how legends originate and perpetuate. Set in a library, the film centers around the student and his group of friends as they take turns telling scary tales – new urban legends in the making. Volumes of Blood was filmed for five nights over the course of four months using various cameras and numerous directors. Production wrapped up last November, and it premiered in front of 400 people at the Owensboro Convention Center on March 13, eliciting a

But all the side projects ultimately left Starks feeling a bit like a “glorified wedding planner,” and it was time to make another film. He drafted screenwriter Todd Martin from Owensboro and Nathan Thomas Milliner, a

Since the premiere, Starks has submitted about 30 screeners to reviewers all over the world and so far, they think the world of Volumes of Blood. The highly respected website Dread Central is a big fan and Starks has been contacted by a number of critics who “got in touch just to let me know they received the screener and that they absolutely loved it.” Locally, Volumes of Blood will play at the MayDay Film Festival on May 16. Times will be listed on their website and Facebook page. Starks is also working on screenings at festivals like ScareFest in Lexington. It’s all very impressive for a small town filmmaker who doesn’t want or need the bright lights of Los Angeles. “I’m content not to be the next Spielberg, because everybody is trying to be that. None of that ever appealed to me.” - TE Follow P.j. Starks on Facebook and Youtube.

wanted to be remembered from now until whenever, then I should listen to Marvin Gaye, David Ruffin, the Temptations, Sam Cook – all the greats,” he says. “I took a little bit of what they did and drew from other genres and made me.” What A Haygan made is a larger than life persona that took shape in high school and then fully developed at Western Kentucky University where he first started performing. “Sophomore year I did an open mic – everybody wanted me to do it, because they would see me walking around campus with headphones on singing,” he says. “I sang “I Can’t Help but Wait” by Trey Songz and the house went crazy. I actually signed an autograph afterwards, and that’s when I knew I had something special.” To capitalize on his moment in the sun, A Haygan put his business/ marketing education to work and devised an intriguing publicity campaign, printing up shirts with the slogan “I Hate A Haygan.” It was just crazy enough to work. “The first month, I sold a thousand shirts,” he says. “I told my parents ‘you don’t have to send me any more money for school – I got it covered.’ It was the best experience of my life, just knowing that people support what you’re doing.” With everyone and their brother talking about the uber-tall R&B singer on campus, A Haygan knew it was time to get serious about a music career. He had people “right where I wanted them” but couldn’t decide how to proceed. Postcollege, he hosted parties and kept a high profile but it wasn’t until a fateful talk with his biggest supporter that the way forward became crystal clear. “I called my mom, and she said ‘you need to put a CD together,’” A Haygan explains. He next called his older brother who suggested a photo shoot, and “everything started to fall into place.”

“S-H-O-W-T-I-M-E, it’s showtime…” goes the chorus to local

R&B singer A Haygan’s slow jam off his new EP, Heart, Mind & Soul: Vol. 1. He’s referencing the royal treatment he intends to lavish upon his lady when she returns home from work, but “showtime” also describes the 6’6”, ever-smiling extrovert to a T. Try as you might, you simply can’t mistake A Haygan. From his Kid ‘N Play haircut to his immaculate, unique – and very 90s – sense of style, he’s always ready for the spotlight. It’s all part of his mission to present something special as an artist and make sure that you never forget him. In conversation, A Haygan speaks with a deep, near-Barry White tone, but the 25-year-old’s singing voice is unexpectedly high and every bit as smooth as the 90s R&B stars he so admires. Yet, it was the classic artists of the 60s that initially inspired him. “My dad told me that if I

Heart, Mind & Soul: Vol. 1 came together in just one month with many of the lyrical ideas inspired by A Haygan’s favorite films, including Showtime starring Eddie Murphy. Wanting to stand out as always, he hired a top-notch marketing team and released a slew of media and clothing tie-ins. Again, it paid off. “The first day, the CD had 30,000 listens on Spinderella,” he says. In addition, “I like That,” the official single for the album, has already surpassed 100,000 listens on Soundcloud. A remix of the song featuring a “big star” is in the works as well as a video. This month, A Haygan will hit the road with three fellow R&B artists on the regional “We Workin’ Tour” before heading out on his own to promote Heart, Mind & Soul all over the Midwest. Ultimately, he hopes to record upwards of 50 volumes of the album, a la R. Kelly’s Trapped in the Closet series. He’s also in talks to produce a Heart, Mind & Soul webisode. Stay tuned…TE Follow A Haygan on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and visit ahaygan. com for more info. Blue Moon Summer Honey Wheat

KCCO Gold Lager

Daniel Knight • 2.5 Here’s a new release from AnheuserBusch set to compete in the growing “don’t really like beer market.” It pours up very clear and light golden in color with a one finger head that quickly fades away. I mainly smell a lime-like aroma that reminds me of a margarita. The taste is sweet and reminds me of a Corona with a lime in it. It also tastes kind of like a soft drink. Don’t get me wrong, it’s actually very drinkable and kind of tasty in its own way. I’ve no doubt that some folks will enjoy this beer.

Daniel Knight • 2 I’ve always felt that overall, Blue Moon wasn’t too bad for a “quasi craft” beer. So, I was looking forward to sampling this reincarnated Blue Moon brew. It pours up clear (strangely clear since it’s a wheat ale) and golden yellow in color with a lackluster head that quickly fades, leaving a thin ring of bubbles around the sides of the glass. The aroma is sweet and malty with honey. The taste is uneventful with mostly an unpleasant graininess and a honey flavor that makes me wonder if it’s even natural. I am not impressed with this brew.

Daniel Knight • 3 Resignation classifies this brew as a German Pilsener. It pours up clear and honey-colored with very little head that fades to nothing quickly - a sign of low carbonation. The nose is subtle but nice - malty and biscuity with hints of honey and yeast. The taste is sweet with straw, grain and breadyness; maybe some honey there too. I think lager fans will find this a pretty solid brew, but I can’t get real excited about it.

Paul Bragin • 4 A quickly disappearing white head forms on this beer, leaving behind a clear golden liquid. The scent of tequila from the barrels used in the aging process dominates the nose. The tequila flavors continue when drinking the beer, especially the sweet citrus notes. This is a great beer to drink during the sweltering summer months and could pair well with citrus desserts like key lime pie or a summer berry tart. Jabez Martinez • 4 This may be one of the coolest designs because who doesn’t like a skull on your beer bottle? This is a crisp clean yellow beer. I am not much on tequila, but the flavor was not overbearing - just present. I could also taste some citrus flavors. Some of the other alcohol-infused beers seem to be over the top but this one was pretty good. The 6% ABV was also an added plus.

76 |

Paul Bragin • 4.25 A thick white head tops this beer when poured into a wheat beer glass. The standard smell of wheat with a hint of banana and citrus from the orange peel used rounds out the scent profile. The wheat flavors remain when first sipping the beer, followed by a hint of sweetness from the honey during the finish. It could pair well with lighter dishes like salads or serve as an excellent complement to meat dishes glazed with honey. Jabez Martinez • 4.5 Now this is a beer I would consider a summer beer. I liked the crisp wheat flavor with the subtle flavor of honey. I could taste a slight bit of citrus flavor but not very much. Blue Moon hasn’t put many beers on the market that I don’t like.

May 2015 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Paul Bragin • 4 A thin white head crowns this amber beer, but evaporates almost immediately. A sweet malt smell fills the nose. The malt flavors stay on the tongue during the tasting, with low hop bitterness. This beer is a great example of what an American lager should taste like. It would be a great choice to bring to a cookout during the summer to pair with hamburgers and hot dogs or drink during a ballgame. Jabez Martinez • 4

This is a clear amber beer with a nice aroma. I could taste some honey and some grains. This was actually a complex lager with many flavors being detected. I would consider this one better than your average lager but not quite good enough to get a higher score.

Goose Island Summer Ale

Daniel Knight • 4 Goose Summer Ale is Goose Island’s new session ale. It pours up a clear golden color and churns up a frothy two finger head, leaving a lacy trail as you drink it. The nose is rich with hops and grains. The taste is first hops, then grains. It’s also nicely balanced with malts and although satisfying to a hophead, it’s not over the top. With its 5% ABV, good flavor and pleasant mouthfeel, Goose Summer Ale will most likely enjoy a broad-based following.

Paul Bragin • 4.5 A very thick white head forms on this honey-colored beer and never seems to completely vanish. Pine notes from the hops stand out in the scent profile. The pine notes continue along with some citrus notes during the first sip of the beer and especially in the long finish. This beer would pair well with a grilled meat like pork served with a citrus based sauce or spicy dishes. Jabez Martinez • 3.5 I guess I was expecting more of a citrus type beer but the large hops on the bottle should have given it away. This beer poured a clear amber with good carbonation. It did have a crisp hops flavor but I usually don’t equate that with a summer beer. I guess I was expecting some sort of lemony wheat beer but for what it was, it was OK.

arts & activities May 1: Bill Burr – “Billy Bible Belt Tour”

May 2: BoDeans

Bill Burr is an American comedian or a comedian from the North American Union, depending on when you read this. He grew up outside of Boston and did fairly poorly in school, despite the fact that he applied himself. Having first gained notoriety for his recurring role on the second season of Chappelle’s Show, Bill developed a comedic style of uninformed logic that has made him a regular with Letterman, Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Fallon. Bill co-starred opposite Kevin Costner in the indie film, Black or White and Bill’s animated Netflix series, F Is For Family, will premiere featuring Bill, Laura Dern and Justin Long as the Murphy family. Bill premiered his four hour-long special, I’m Sorry You Feel That Way, on Netflix and released the vinyl album, Live At Andrew’s House. In July, Bill received the Stand-up Comedian of the Year Award from the prestigious Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal. Earlier this year Bill was seen in Walk of Shame alongside Elizabeth Banks and in 2013 he was seen in the films The Heat with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, and Stand Up Guys with Al Pacino and Christopher Walken. Bill was also seen in the Steve Carell & Tina Fey feature, Date Night. Bill received raves for his recurring role as “Kuby” on the hit AMC-TV show, Breaking Bad and he can be seen in multiple episodes of the hit Comedy Central show, Kroll Show. He guest starred on Fox TV’s New Girl in 2013 and contributed to the 2012 and 2011 ESPYS. One of the most popular comedy podcasts on the web, Bill’s Monday Morning Podcast is an off-the-cuff weekly rant that has become a fan favorite. Bill began the podcast in May of 2007 and has produced over 350 episodes.

Long known as one of the best acts in the business, BoDeans continue to tour year round and deliver amazing, high energy performances. Formed in 1983, the band quickly became a college radio staple after the release of their debut album, Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams. Their straight ahead, guitar-based sound was a welcome change after the electronic movement of the early 80s and fitted in perfectly with the times as bands like The Replacements, Soul Asylum and Husker Du emerged to shift the musical landscape. In late April, the band released its 12th album, I Can’t Stop, another collection of classic, guitar-driven tunes that shows Bodeans are still going strong over 30 years later.

There is a Giant Spider on Your Shoulder Excuse me. I don’t mean to bother you, but you have a spider on your shoulder, and it’s really big, like one of the biggest I’ve ever seen. And scary looking, too. You probably shouldn’t move. I’m afraid to move, myself. What’s your name? Karen? Well, Karen, my name is Sam, and I wish there was something I could tell you, like that there isn’t a huge spider on your shoulder, slowly creeping toward the sensitive part of your neck, but alas, the world is a cruel mistress. But don’t worry. We can make it through this. Just think of this as a trying moment in your life. I’m sure you’ve had plenty, and even though I’m only meeting you for the first time, I can tell you’ve grown to appreciate those struggles and learned to take them for what they are. Once this passes, we’ll look back and laugh. Maybe not aloud, but on the inside. We’ll think about how scary it was, and how vulnerable we felt, and how we both came together in this brief moment of weakness to discover parts of ourselves that we didn’t even know existed. Do you feel that? No, not the spider grazing its talon-like mandibles across your jugular. I’m talking about love, Karen. You and me in a singular bond that transcends time and space. Karen, I need you to calm down. I’m feeling the same emotions as you, and I know it’s hard. But there’s something I need to tell you. I’m sorry, but I just don’t think it’s going to work between us. We’re two different people. You have a scary looking spider on your shoulder, and I just started my first semester of culinary school. I promise, I’ll never forget you. Please don’t cry. Boy, that’s a big spider. Bye, Karen. Bye forever.

As much as I love my city, a getaway to a far-away and fantastical land was just what I needed to kick off this spring. When you get into a stalwart routine, no matter how much you love your job(s), spouse, pets, etc., removing yourself from said routine is often the only way to get perspective and regain appreciation for your small world. With all of the negativity surrounding our beloved state this past month, I was more than happy to pack up with my wife (yes, I said wife- pay attention) and head to the Big Easy. For almost an entire week, we were surrounded by history, art, music, architecture, amazing food, beautiful weather, interesting people and a vibe unlike many other places I’ve visited. On our final day, the drive out of the city carried a feeling of loss. The journey home, needless to say, was a bit less energetic than our arrival. Then, something wonderful happened. I was thrust back into my tiny world, surrounded by history, art, music, culture, architecture, amazing food, beautiful weather and interesting people. Since the horror of the RFRA, I’ve heard countless people say, “I can’t wait to get out of this backwards place and go somewhere more open-minded.” The truth is, if everyone who seeks the beauty and love in life leaves a place, they take the good with

them. Instead, I challenge you to stay and share in the journey to make Indiana as accepting and cultured as all of those other amazing places. The only difference between us and them is our willingness to embrace change. At the very least, take a vacation from your mind. Or, if you can swing it, travel. Just make sure you come back with a revitalized sense of what it could mean to be a Hoosier. And bring me a meat pie and a Voodoo daiquiri from Lafitte’s. Signed, Whitney Patterson, gypsy at heart

Volumes of Blood Verite Cinema Urban legends have been around forever, and we have heard all of them, even if locale or age causes a slight variation in the story. The perpetuation by word-ofmouth is key, adding twists and layers to create stories that both frighten and attempt to keep us in line. This film opens with the most popular of these campfire tales, with groan-worthy overacting, but alas, it is being watched by a character in the film itself. Stick around. The local writers and directors of Volumes of Blood have joined forces in a sincere attempt to resurrect the anthology horror film (think Tales from the Crypt, Cat’s Eye, and more recently, V.H.S.). It has something for the horror-lover in each of us, with just the right amount of humor, slick dialogue, gore and camp to make us nostalgic. With an impossibly small budget and most of the participants snagged from local and regional arenas, the outcome and initial success are pretty impressive. Kevin Smith (besides being referenced in the film) and Joss Whedon come to mind, and the theme music is memorable, with the soundtrack featuring regional bands like Harley Poe. Horror is something that’s hard to keep fresh, so it’s nice to see some recycling done in a reverent manner. No possessed teenage girls or zombies, thank whatever. Check out V.o.B. at the MayDay Film Festival here in Evansville on May 16. – Whitney Patterson

ROBERT A. WOLF

Pushing 30 and single, two best friends reach a turning point in their relationship. Until now, free-spirited Sasha (Leighton Meester, Gossip Girl) and perfectionist Paige (Gillian Jacobs, Community) have been avoiding adulthood by spending all of their time together drinking cheap wine and watching reality television. A drunken pact leads to internet dates for both, Sasha’s resulting in utter disaster and Paige’s in another date with Tim (Adam Brody, The O.C.). Questioning her own life path when Paige and Tim’s relationship starts to blossom, Sasha becomes fearful that she’s losing her friend and is doomed to be alone forever. The two women start to learn that working a third person into their lives may be the hardest thing they’ve ever done. Paige attempts, often unsuccessfully, to balance the two and in turn, learns an eye-opening lesson about herself. With completely believable performances from all three, and a hilarious, heartwarming, sometimes-painful platonic romance between the women, the film is full of awkward humor and genuine life experiences. Written by Susanna Fogel and Joni Lefkowitz, Life Partners is an adaptation of a play based on their real-life friendship. The soundtrack is fun and indie, and although the plot is a bit slow at times, it’s because it so closely resembles real life and the characters are authentic.

Pangea

Life Partners (R) Magnolia Pictures

No doubt about it, Evansville is a guitar town. So, it’s good to know that local musicians like Robert A. Wolf are out there bucking the trend and keeping things interesting. His electronic approach to songwriting, while somewhat alien to this area, is a nice change of pace; instrumental tracks are constructed methodically, making effective use of repetition and slowly building into hypnotic synthscapes. Put simply, Wolf creates background music with real substance. In fact, his previous release, 2009’s Krakatoa, has been featured on the Weather Channel’s Local on the 8’s, worldwide radio and podcasts. He also does soundtrack work for indie films, some of which have won awards and been featured at Cannes Film Festival. Long on the backburner – three years to be exact – Pangea was recorded and mastered in 2012 at Wolfymusic Studio on Evansville’s west side, but life got in the way of a timely release. Even so, it still sounds fresh, picking up where Krakatoa left off and expanding with melodies clearly influenced by the giants of the electronic genre – Jean Michel Jarre and Vangelis, in particular, with touches of Tangerine Dream. Each track on Pangea seemingly drifts along, yet is often subtly anchored by a gorgeous synthetic sequence with flourishes of piano as evidenced on such standouts as “A New Day,” “Avalonia” and “The Sandpiper,” a hauntingly beautiful piece trumped only by 10-minute closer, “Walking My Brontisaur.” Pangea is available through cdbaby.com.

Sleepyhead FORMATION/INFLUENCES: I (Zachary Dactyl) made the decision to actively pursue hip hop in the summer of 2013. I had noticed a trend in the genre as the focus shifted more to artistic merit and lyricism. I had been keeping journals and writing poetry since I was a teenager and always knew I could rap pretty well. I was big on artists you would hear coming from labels like Stones Throw, Rawkus and Fools Gold. More recently I’ve become a big fan of Odd Future, Kendrick Lamar and Childish Gambino. In the fall of 2013 I went to Chicago to visit a friend, Cody Brunner, and record four songs. After that recording session Cody was impressed with the songs I had crafted and since then he’s been 50% of Sleepyhead, taking on half the production of the music and all of the mixing. RECORDINGS: I posted those songs online and the response was overwhelmingly positive. In the summer of 2014, Cody and I built a studio and purchased equipment to make higher quality music and began working on the songs that would become The God That Follows, a project that was just released on March 29. The content is unique as the lyrics are personal but the subject matter is relatable to anyone; the topics on the album range from the complexity of human relationships to being young and arrogant. I think a lot of what makes the music likable is that it’s meaningful but it’s also playful and strays away from being too preachy. I learned a lot about every aspect of recording and writing through the process. PERFORMANCES: On April 3rd I had a show to celebrate the release of the record at PG Cafe and upwards of 70 people attended. I’m currently recording a follow up EP that should be out this summer and have another show scheduled at PG performing with Oklahoma City artist Jabee. To date, I’ve performed five live shows and all of them have been at PG. I have a good relationship with the owner, and I really appreciate the venue and for what it stands. This summer I will look to perform at other venues in Evansville as well as surrounding metropolises such as Louisville and St. Louis.

cd reviews Halestorm Into the Wild Life

Atlantic Records The newest offering from the hardworking Pennsylvania band, Into the Wild Life is different than most “hard rock” albums of today in more ways than one. From a completely unbiased perspective, as a new (not typically my bag) fan, Lzzy Hale IS Halestorm. Her currently unparalleled energy and thrust seem to make the instruments dance, and when we’re allowed to see a softer side, they cry. Either way, by the time you read this, I’ll have already soaked up all that glory at the Victory. Opening track “Scream” is an invitation to fans with a fuzzy metal hug. Although a bit Hot-Topic-y, the lyrics are about using criticism to excel and embracing emotion instead of avoiding it- sage advice for angsty teens. “Amen” is a bit poppy and that new hard-rockcountry fusion kind of drivel, but it’s redeemed by Joe Hottinger’s wailing. One of my favorite tracks on the album is “New Modern Love,” and if it’s not a gay anthem, then one has never existed. “Mayhem” brought out my high school Tool-loving self, a genuine metal song untouchable in cohesiveness. Besides the incredibly tight playing and Lzzy’s Pink-on-steroids vocals, I am most impressed by their staying power in a bubblegum/ sh*t-hop/whiny-bro environment. Rock on.

Yes Ma'am Bless This Mess Self-Released

Everyone knows that New Orleans is a hotbed for amazing music, and Yes Ma’am is solid proof. It may have been the cute washboard player, “Dizzy,” who caught my eye, but the sounds filling the French Market made me fall in love. The six-piece, self-proclaimed “1920’s rock-and-roll” band is, without a doubt, one of the best to ever grace the Quarter. Take that washboard and add resonator guitars, suitcase, fiddle, banjo, bass and Matthew Bracken’s surprising centuries-old vocals and you have pure Cajun magic. “Deep Chatham” opens the album with a swift kick, and if you don’t want to dance, you have no soul. Music lore may be incorrect, because it seems the devil went down to Louisiana and met Elena Dorn, not Johnny; her fiddle is unearthly. The lyrics are fun and tongue-in-cheek - “I like my whiskey/ and I like my gin/ but the way I like my sister/ it’s a goddamn sin” - and Benjamin’s upright takes center stage on “Dig Your Grave.” There’s no escaping the otherworldly seduction of “Weight of the World,” and their version of the waltz “Metzakukkia” is the most haunting I’ve ever heard. The feel with this band is that the only thing they’re truly serious about in life is their music, and it’s working for them.

Kendrick Lamar To Pimp a Butterfly Top Dawg, Aftermath, Interscope

1st Bath

Grand Jury Music Artists often wear many masks, and it seems that the more they’ve worn, the greater the feel of authenticity and interest their art exudes. When Jacob Summers, the sheltered fundie Christian kid, dropped out of college to join the Marines, I doubt he envisioned later adopting the moniker Avid Dancer and releasing a full album of dream-laden disco pop. Add in the fact that this champion drumline percussionist wasn’t even allowed to listen to non-Christian music until college and 1st Bath seems to be a fluke. “Stop Playing with my Heart” is The Black Keys meets the Turtles and probably my favorite track with the soothing Americana of “Why Did I Leave You Behind” as a close second. Of course, with surfer bass lines and slightly muted vocals, Dancer takes cues from about 50 other artists but without a hint of plagiarism. This is again surprising, with no popular music influences as a lad, the joy of coming of age before the internet and after years of his individual expression being pulverized. Fluke or not, it’s damn good. From the shoegaze-y nodder “All the Other Girls” to the equally kaleidoscopic ender “Up Against a Wall,” it’s apparent that Jacob has found his home. Break out the bubbly.

Alabama Shakes Sound & Color

ATO Records

From hardworking cover band to Grammy-nominated household name, Alabama Shakes has taken the music industry by storm over the past few years. Contrary to most recent popular music, these guys seem to have old souls and a firm grasp on the meaning of music. With Southern roots, drive, incredible talent and genuine nonchalance toward fame, the Shakes don’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. The title track begins as pretty solid proof that Brittany Howard is about to take us to church; it’s a modern hymn showing that she has more soul in the tip of her tongue than most bands have in all of their bodies. “Don’t Wanna Fight” is a lyrically-rich groove tune about the sheer exhaustion of being a human being, and “Dunes” is Bowie circa Stardust - trip-rock with Howard’s androgynous vocals. So good. Favorite track, hands down, is “This Feeling,” a sort of concession to “Don’t Wanna Fight.” It leaves me convinced that Howard is the musical lovechild of D’Angelo and Erykah Badu, oozing sex in a way that is incredibly rare. The reggae vibes on “Guess Who” pick the pace back up and “The Greatest” is unexpectedly punky/Strokes-y. This album is a refreshing take on genre fusion, chipping away at boring expectations. Genuflect to the music gods, because rock’s heart is still beating, even if it has a bit of a murmur. -Whitney Patterson

Don’t expect a greater hip hop album to come out this year. Kendrick Lamar made a name for himself in 2012 with his major-label debut, good kid, m.A.A.d city, and now, three years later he returns with his grittiest music yet. Lyrically, there is not another album out right now that touches perfectly on the recent events in black American culture. Kendrick is mad and rallies to get everyone else mad with him. To Pimp a Butterfly is a rare album that expertly blends hip hop with social commentary to create an artsy masterpiece.

Courtney Barnett Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit Mom + Pop Australian singersongwriter Courtney Barnett is witty. She knows how to create catchy songs and write clever lyrics. Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit is stuffed to the brim with smart, upbeat garage-rock songs that evoke memories of early 90s Weezer and Pavement. It’s a good album that is easy to have on repeat. For those curious, Barnett’s two singles from the album “Pedestrian at Best” and “Depreston” are excellent starting points. If you enjoy those songs, the album is perfect.

Earl Sweatshirt I Don’t Like Sh*t, I Don’t Go Outside Columbia See title: I Don’t Like Sh*t, I Don’t Go Outside. Earl Sweatshirt is pretty honest. This album is dark and meant to be listened to in hot-boxed basements where lights flicker on and off and horror films play muted in the background. It’s not Earl’s best work, but he is one of the most interesting rappers in the game right now. His unsettling, straightforward lyrics and grimy beats make this a standout album among all of the EDMinfused pop-rap that is suffocating the genre right now. - Russell Finn

gallery district where a young artist can rub elbows with wealthy patrons. As a creative person in Evansville, you have to go out and make these spaces and experiences happen. This DIY attitude was ever present in the late 80s post-punk scene that revolved around basement shows, the Ross Theater, and eventually the Alhambra Theatre. Today it can be seen in a resurgent interest and community investment in the Haynie’s Corner Arts District and the development of the Franklin Street entertainment district. One Evansville quirk I find fascinating as an outsider is the tendency to give directions based on where landmarks used to be. Even though I didn’t grow up here I know all kinds of historical trivia based on driving directions and the way people describe the city. Because when you ask about long gone landmarks, buildings and businesses, you’d better prepare for a healthy Midwestern story-time. Get comfy, it could be a while; but having lived in Cincinnati most of my adult life I am used to it.

Local Musician and Senior Network Consultant Evansville is not my hometown but it has become My City. One of the endearing and enduring qualities that I find inescapable is that Evansville is a Do It Yourself town. The DIY spirit seems to drive business, and, nearer to my heart, the arts and music scene. In Evansville there is no old and established system of clubs and venues on which to piggyback musical aspirations. There is no

What you can’t escape about Evansville, is that all too often, you can’t escape - or if you do, it pulls you back. I’ve heard My City referred to as a vortex, a gravity well, a black hole, lair of the sarlacc... I’m sure you get the idea. I’ve left and moved back twice, and I’m not even from here! I’ve interviewed candidates at work and most out-of-towners looking to move to Evansville are originally from here and returning with their families. What makes My City so irresistible? I can only guess it’s the cheap real estate and mostly quiet living. If you want to stand out, you can stand out. If you want to blend in, you can blend in. I think that’s the appeal of My City.
