We teach the benefits of purchasing loose diamonds rather than those already mounted. Purchasing a loose diamond eliminates the risk of purchasing a stone with flaws hidden by prongs and settings. Loose stones are also often more accurately priced – a must for budgeting purposes. All other things equal, a diamond weighing .45 carats should cost less than one weighing .55 carats. However, all diamonds in that size range may technically be called a “half carat.” To ensure you get the diamond you pay for in size and quality, ask to select from loose diamonds measured by their actual diamond weight. Typically rings shouldn’t be sized up or down more than one size. A conscientious jeweler will have the ring made in the correct size if the stock size is way too big or small. This will help avoid future problems such as side stones becoming loose, a common issue with rings sized beyond what is appropriate. For Karen and Tammy, who have been together for 12 years, a lack of legal marriage never kept them from being fully committed to one another and their family. However, the countless rights that are afforded with legal marriage and the lack of recognition of their relationship by law were obstacles that the couple was willing to fight in order to achieve equality and provide the best life possible for their 3 children: Jackson, 7, and 4-yearold twins Taylor and Tenley. In 2013, when the Federal Government announced that it would accept tax returns filed by married same-sex couples, they decided to travel to Iowa to get a marriage license to receive benefits already afforded to opposite-sex couples. Same-sex couples in Indiana have a lot to thank this couple for; the Vaughn-Kajmowiczs spoke on the legislative floor against HJR-3, an initiative that would have constitutionally banned same-sex marriage in Indiana and has since been quashed through the efforts of activists and non-profits, one of which was founded by the couple. Karen and Tammy were also plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the state of Indiana to recognize same-sex marriages. For the couple, the importance of marriage equality is simple. “For our kids! Our children deserve to have married parents. Our children will face many obstacles in their lives, but now they won’t have to face the question, ‘Why aren’t your parents married?’” Their strength and tireless efforts are indicative of their love. “We have fought tooth and nail to be married. We fought because we understand, respect, and long for our relationship to be equated with that of any other married couple.”

General Manager of Sauced Planning a wedding can be quite a headache, but for samesex couples, the hurdles are especially difficult to navigate. For the Cartwrights, who married in 2013, the location of the actual legal ceremony was the first daunting task, as samesex marriage was still banned in Indiana. After being together for six years and engaged for four, it was a struggle for the couple because they wanted to share their special day with friends and families in their home town. With no other option, they made the trek to Iowa City, just the two of them, to get a marriage license. The next issue for them was finding a venue to host a reception for two married men in an area that is not always LGBT-friendly. Luckily, after a few regular hiccups, Scott Schymick, the owner of Kirby’s Private Dining, welcomed the couple and gave them a reception to remember. When two people who are in love are ready to commit their lives to one another, the hardest part is usually finding the right dress or tux. But for the Cartwrights, there were more serious concerns: worrying about traveling out-of-state without their loved ones to share in their special day and that their relationship would not be legally recognized when they finally got home – even that a bakery might refuse to make their cake because they are the same gender. Over a year later, Cole and Wade are still happily married. They both volenteer for the Haynie’s Corner Arts District and have created a tool to help make other couples’ marriage adventures a bit easier: MAP Evansville is a collective map of LGBT-friendly businesses. – Whitney Patterson Tri-State Bride 2015

Not many local businesses can lay claim to winning an Evansville Courier & Press Reader’s Choice Award - to being the best of the best. Yet, Studio B Photography has won four of them over the last five years. From commercial work to weddings and everything in between, it’s the community’s clear - cut favorite. Owned and operated by camera wizard Daniel Knight, Studio B grew out of his life-long passion for photography that first caught fire back in high school. “I spent pretty much all of sophomore year through senior year taking pictures or working in the darkroom,” he says. “I was rarely seen without my camera.” As graduation loomed, Knight felt increasingly uncertain about his future. But he had no reservations about photography and with a little networking, landed a sales position at the original Schmitt Photo. Both the president and vice-president were duly impressed with the young Knight’s talent. “Once they figured out that I knew a lot about photography and was quick to learn, they let me work on my own,” he says. Over the next two decades, Knight continued to expand his technical knowledge of photography and flourish in hardware sales. His expertise did not go unnoticed. The owners of the new east-side Schmitt Photo offered him a management position – which then led to a coveted professional sales position. Often working on the road, Knight forged invaluable connections with some of the area’s future photography icons including Bob Straub and Don Hardesty. But little did he realize that he was preparing for something much bigger. After being reprimanded by his boss for doing some professional photography on the side, Knight made a life-altering decision. “I went home that night and told my wife that I was quitting my job. It was so evident that I wanted to be a professional photographer,” he explains. Knight opened Studio B Photography in 1995, running the business out of his Posey County home for the first seven years. The novelty of the situation wore off almost as quickly as his clientele grew. “It

was insane. We had virtually no place left to live. Every space in our home was being used for photo shoots,” Knight says, still cringing at the thought. So, in 2002, Knight built the studio of his dreams on the same property – a beautiful, highly-functional building that makes quite an impact. In fact, most every client that experiences Studio B sends a new customer Knight’s way. The pictures, as they say, are worth a thousand words. “We’re not the cheapest, but we’re one of the most consistently professional in quality – the product we put out is phenomenal,” he says. “We shoot an enormous amount of frames, do a serious amount of editing and make everything look great.” Studio B has adapted well to the changing marketplace in recent years. While many professional photographers took the digital plunge too soon without ﬁrst mastering the format, Knight took his time, never sacriﬁcing quality. The technology may have changed, but the challenge is still the same. “There’s an evolution of a photographer,” Knight explains. “Once you’ve mastered the craft, things like lighting, exposure, lenses, etc., the hardest part is yet to come - learning to work with people. Posing your subjects and knowing how to get them to relax takes experience. But I really love what I do. I consider myself a ‘people photographer.” —TE
