Beauty & the Beef >> Readers, advertisers and friends of all sorts, What goes together better than brides and burgers? Well, a vast array of things to be honest. That being stated, the combo sure makes for an intriguing cover! We are giddy and ecstatic for warmer weather here at the office, as I would imagine most everyone is, and we really wanted to start the summer with a blast! This issue is a blockbuster… It truly is one of our most dense issues to date. It contributes most of its heft to our special wedding section, best of summer bar guide and our brand new burger guide. So, if you happen to be planning a wedding, searching for burger bliss or a bar built for you in the tri-state, the three are great places to begin your journey! 2014 Rockin’ River City Ride/ Battle of the Bands & More!
by Thomas Ellis
Some fundraisers take time to catch on and build a following, but the Junior League of Evansville’s Rockin’ River City Ride was a winner right out of the gate.
T
he unique event featuring a downtown bike ride on the riverfront and Battle of the Bands at Tropicana Evansville first appeared in April 2012 and received rave reviews – both for the athletic challenge and the entertainment value. Last year’s sequel again exceeded expectations, raising big dollars for the JLE and its charitable programs. Just days away, the 2014 Rockin’ River City Ride is sure to be another big success with even more bang for your buck. This year’s event will take place over two days, Friday May 9 and Saturday, May 10. In addition to the popular bike ride and Battle of the Bands competition, the organizers are introducing an exciting three or five mile GLOW Run/Walk to Friday’s agenda. Participants will enjoy a music filled, glowing course out in the fresh air of a beautiful spring evening. Friday’s agenda also features the much-anticipated Battle of the Bands at Tropicana Evansville. After 5,000 votes cast online at rockinrivercityride.org, the three finalists facing off for a $10,000 prize package and the right to be called the “Best Band in the Tri-State” are: Calabash, Jay Putty and Unforgettable Summer. Rest assured this trio of local talent will not disappoint; the competition promises to be fierce but with a party atmosphere. After the GLOW Run/Walk and Battle of the Bands, the stage will be set for one of the area’s most scenic bike rides along the riverfront on Saturday. Participants can choose a 5K, 25K, 60K

or 100K bike ride that offers a true challenge for novice and experienced cyclers alike. Rockin’ River City Riders will enjoy numerous fully-stocked rest stops, excellent free route support, a bike park that includes food and merchant vendors, a kids’ park with bounce houses, games, prizes, a bike helmet give-away, a bike safety presentation and live entertainment all day. Saturday’s agenda also features a 5K Heart Walk, the American Heart Association’s national campaign to get America moving. This non-competitive walk celebrates those who have made lifestyle changes and encourages many more to take the pledge to live healthier lifestyles while raising the dollars needed to fund life-saving research and education, advocate for health and save lives. Funds raised through the Rockin’ River City Ride will be used to support the Junior League of Evansville, the Evansville Morning Rotary Club and their missions and charities. So, come on out and support this two day community celebration – and be sure to go online to read the full list of sponsors that help make the Rockin’ River City Ride not only possible but such a huge success.

An Evening with
at the Ford Center
by Thomas Ellis
With a recent appearance at the Grammys and a new album on the horizon, Chicago is back in the spotlight – or, rather, the light is just a little brighter at the moment.
I
ncredibly, the Windy City band with the horn-driven pop sound and decades of hits has never missed a tour in 47 years. Such mind-boggling longevity is a testament to both the musicianship and the melodies that have earned Chicago the #13 position on Billboard Magazine’s list of the 100 greatest artists of all time.
News4U (N4U): I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that the Beatles had just released Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band when you formed Chicago. Walt Parazaider (WP): It’s funny you mention that, because it seems like just yesterday that that album came out and knocked us flat. And then there we were at the Grammys recently playing “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?” and “Saturday in the Park” with Robin Thicke – and who’s sitting in the front row at the Staples Center but Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. It’s nice to be a member of an exclusive club like that.
The show starts at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. For more information, visit thefordcenter.com
10 | May 2014
On May 21 at the Ford Center, the current line-up (including original members Robert Lamm, Lee Loughnane, James Pankow and Walt Parazaider), will blast through two hours of classics and preview new material.
Saxophonist Parazaider kindly spoke with News4U about the history and legacy of the band.
N4U: Chicago started out releasing double albums but all these years later, the band has been putting out two songs at a time, digitally. The music industry has obviously changed. WP: It sure is different, isn’t it? Early on, we had so much material backlogged from rehearsing and just trying to get a gig that paid us enough to buy food. That was the reason for the double albums at the time. But the creative process never changes, just the way that music is recorded and delivered. What’s missing, however, is the social aspect of going into a record store and sharing musical knowledge with other people. But we’ve got a full, 11 track album mixed and ready for consumption. We had a lot of fun making it
• www.evansvillemediagroup.com
N4U: Some of the band’s biggest hits came during the 80s – soft-rock songs which did not highlight the famous horn section of the band. Did you feel your talents were being ignored at the time? WP: That’s a good question. First of all, the horn section has been playing together for 47 years, by far the longest run in the history of music. We’re really proud of that. But to be honest, it wasn’t a happy time for me and Lee and James, and we started thinking we might have to look for another line of work. But what we decided to do is involve ourselves in other ways – play a little guitar or keyboard. Maybe it was good old Midwestern stubbornness, but we decided to stick it out, and we came out the other side roaring with music.

Drums Beat Cancer by Claire Edwards
In order to pursue their goals of raising cancer awareness and creating a sense of community among cancer sufferers and their families, Joe Meleski and Brad Wireman founded the project Drums Beat Cancer.
T
he pair’s first venture began with a custom snare from Rocket Drum Works. The drum will be passed around to a variety of well-known drummers for them to sign and in some situations, play. The snare will eventually be gifted to a cancer patient. The men hope that this endeavor will serve not only to spread awareness about the struggles that those living with cancer face, but also to provide inspiration to survivors and their families. The project will take off on Monday, April 21st in Nashville at the Nashville Drummer Jam. Drummers from groups such as Rascal Flats, Sugar Land, Brad Paisley, Randy Houser, Paramore and The Low Cash Cowboys will be present at the event. These individuals will sign and possibly play the Drums Beat Cancer snare. In addition to the artists present at the jam, Meleski intends to use the contacts he has made through his work in broadcasting and through his many years as a drummer in the local music scene.
Meleski and Wireman have also made connections with Gilda’s Club Evansville which is a cancer support community that provides networking, support groups, workshops, educational programs and social activities for members. Gilda’s will likely receive the custom snare, possibly to auction off to raise funds for the club, if the current plan of gifting the drum to a cancer patient is unsuccessful. In addition, Meleski’s band Flat Stanley will be holding a poker run on May 10 at 5:30 p.m. at KC’s Timeout Lounge in order to raise funds for Gilda’s and spread the word about Drums Beat Cancer. Meleski stated that his involvement in this project is rooted in a desire to help those living with cancer, and that Drums Beat Cancer is all about “what you can do to inspire someone.”
To support this worth cause on a local level, please attend the Ride & Rock with Flat Stanley Poker Run Fundraiser Event at KC’s Timeout Lounge on May 10th at 5:30 p.m.

Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra presents:
by Jaimie Humbert MI6 sends its most suave British Secret Service agent on a mission to entertain audiences at the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra’s spy-themed production, “The Music of James Bond.”
I
t’s no top secret that the 007 tribute will shake (not stir) the Victory Theatre on Saturday, May 17 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, May 18 at 2 p.m. featuring guest vocalist Hilary Kole, who goes undercover with Maestro Savia and the entire symphony orchestra. The night will include Bond selections such as “From Russia with Love,” “Goldfinger,” “You Only Live Twice,” and the “James Bond Theme,” the signature melody that accompanies the gun barrel sequence in almost every film. Based on the fictional character created in 1953 by writer Ian Fleming, James Bond filled the silver screen with guns, gadgets and close getaways, and the films have been released continuously since the sixties. The Philharmonic’s Maestro Savia recalls going to the movies for his first Bond experience, Goldfinger. “I was about 11-years-old. Wow, those glistening bodies, eventually and fatally painted gold, made quite an impression, as did the music that went along with all those characters.” Among the compositions for the Philharmonic’s Bond night are chart-toppers and award winners such as “Live and Let Die,” the first Bond theme-song to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. “One can’t imagine any parts of the films without this music,” says Savia. “That bold music that represented Bond and his action, and even harsher music for his nemesis in each film, together with the gentler, seductive music that accompanies his love scenes.” Though audiences may associate Bond with his oncamera stunts, Savia promises that the power of the symphony “will focus the audience on this incredible, dynamic, sensual music in a whole new way.” He explains, “All the Bond films have incredible scores that all utilize the forces of a full symphony orchestra. It is the reason they are so ‘in your face’ and have such an impact in the movie theatre. Imagine those same scores played live with a full orchestra in the Victory Theatre.” And itt doesn’t matter who your favorite Bond is, Connery or Moore, when Hilary Kole steals the show as the Bond girl. “I can’t imagine a Bond concert without a female vocal soloist, so Hilary Kole is an indispensable part of the concert,” claims Savia. The women of the Bond films are usually vital to the completion of the mission and, as Savia puts it, “not only does she become the love interest of James Bond (often a very complicated relationship) but … becomes his partner.”
The magic of cinema has brought the Bond characters, settings and twists-and-turns to the forefront of imaginations. But, The Music of James Bond will be equally dramatic, allowing audiences to glimpse the confidential world of espionage. “Between Hilary Kole and myself, we will clue the audience into what’s happening with each musical selection,” says Savia. “And it is nearly always the case that any music in a Bond film that has voice - is that of a woman. The classic being, of course, Goldfinger.” Tickets are available through the box office by calling (812) 425-5050 or online at evansvillephilharmonic.org.

COOKING SPOTLIGHT Fresh, Local & Healthy Eats for Spring with
Paradise Organics
P
aradise Organics, located about one mile north of Castle High school on the east side of SR 261 in Newburgh, is a retail health food store that has been serving the tri-state community since 1995. According to owner E. D. LeMond, “At the time, there was a growing interest in ‘health food’ on the east and west coasts of the country. I had lived for a number of years on the west coast, and my brother had lived on the east. This movement, I was sure, would soon arrive here, and I wanted to be a part of it.” To be on the forefront of the healthy movement, LeMond chooses organic foods. He shares, “Choosing organic is a healthier way to consume nutrients. No synthetic chemical pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers are allowed in certified organic farming. This is highly important by itself. But supporting organic practices and products is much more than how it affects a particular individual.” He goes on to explain, “Until recent history, soil was alive. Alive with micro-organisms and alive with nutrients from previous decomposing vegetative growth. Crops were rotated, so that as nutrients are removed from the soil and incorporated into the current crop being grown, different nutrients are left behind for the next rotated crop to utilize. [However] concentrated chemical run-off from non-organic farming contributes to groundwater, stream, river and even ocean contamination. There are dead zones primary caused by this run-off in lakes and oceans worldwide. These dead zones cannot support normal marine life.” So, the impetus for LeMond’s Paradise Organics store was, and continues to be, “based on personal observations, and on a growing number of professional third party reports on the health of us as individuals, and the health trends for our country and world. We have surely all observed that what you consume, and how you move, greatly affects how you think, and how you feel.” LeMond elaborates, “Some scientists have described our juvenile obesity, and accompanying type two diabetic rates among this group, as an epidemic. Why is this? Has any constant that affects this group changed more than our food supply? Where chemical engineers, not soil and sun, are responsible for processed food tastes?” To that regard, Paradise Organics offers local (pasture raised, non-genetically modified organisms [GMO] fed) animal products: beef, bison, elk, pork, chicken and eggs. They also carry organic produce (local in season), hypo-allergenic
personal and household care products, and gluten-free shelf stable and frozen foods. Garden of Life is a major supplement supplier for Paradise Organics. According to LeMond, they have several of the country’s best sellers in their categories, whichincluderawandorganicproteinandmealreplacementproducts, as well as the Grow Bone system, which increases bone density in most people. In terms of starting out your summer right, LeMond recommends a grilled bison burger with local tomatoes and greens, served with an organic charcoal baked potato. Regardless of your purchase, when purchasing organic, you should strive to hit daily recommendations for fruits and vegetables. Two to four servings of fruit are recommended daily. You can use whole fruits, canned fruits or juice. For your three to five suggested vegetables daily, you can liven up your meals with raw or cooked vegetables, or even drink vegetable juice. Buying organic and local are beneficial to you and the community because you are purchasing food for your household that is free of fertilizers and artificial chemicals, you are supporting local business and you have access to fresher food that leaves less of a carbon footprint.

Next, came the seafood, the Stuffed Roughy. The gracious portion of roughy was dusted with green and perfectly browned. The stuffing (mostly crab) boasted melt-in-your-mouth tenderness with a very mild savory taste of the sea. The less subtle taste of the roughy paired very well with the more savory taste of the crab. Small bits of celery were present in the stuffing proving a slight crunch to break up the richness of the dish. This is one of the best seafood dishes I have had locally, a treat indeed! Lastly, came the 10 oz. King Filet, quite the Hornet’s Nest staple. When it comes to steaks, I prefer very little to no pink in the center because I’m a weirdo. That being said, event with that amount of heat, this hand-cut Black Angus steak held its moisture and flavor extremely well. The flavor was a bold savory and smoky that was pushed out of the stratosphere with the slice of bacon that wrapped it. A side note: most steaks at the Hornet’s Nest are ordered between medium and medium-rare. The quality is very apparent here. This dish is a carnivore’s carnival! So, make a trip to the north side of town and experience a piece of local history for yourself! All of Hornet’s Nest’s options are available at Kingmen’s Event Facility and anywhere open catering is allowed.

I
t is that time again, time to experience a locally-owned restaurant that is probably within the top five names that would be uttered when thinking of a local eatery that truly represents Evansville (even though this one technically calls Earle home). When I say it truly represents Evansville, I mean it is a place that has so much history etched into its walls that you can smell it. And it is supremely comforting. The Hornet’s Nest is over 150 years old, and while sitting inside of it (or even looking at it from the outside) you feel you can scan through the years like a flipbook seeing a multitude of different faces and decors come and go. Currently owned by Derek & Amber Ungethiem, the Hornet’s Nest got its name from the building’s location being invaded annually by hornets. The Hornet’s Nest was originally frequented for its tavern, hotel and dance hall by travelers on their way south. It wasn’t until the 1980’s, that the restaurant began to amp up the quality of its food and flesh out its menu to cater to the more expensive tastes that began populating the area close to the restaurant. Nowadays, the Hornet’s Nest still takes immense pride in the quality of its food, providing attentive and very friendly service and most importantly, preserving its rich past while striving towards a bright future. Besides the history, the Hornet’s Nest has two fantastic traits: its balance of variety and quality and its appeal to the whole family. A classic staple of the Hornet’s Nest are their steaks. So, I acknowledged tradition while also picking out a few menu items you wouldn’t think about if you didn’t visit often. Now, for the food… First up was a wild card, the Chicken Stir-Fry. The smell grabbed me immediately. It was just as pleasantly fragrant as any dish you would find at an actual Chinese restaurant. Flavor-wise, the rice was a great mixture of savory and earthy. The chicken was very tender but not too heavy with a wonderful subtle nutty taste. If you are all about texture, this dish is for you. It changes and coalesces with everything bite. Of course all of the mushrooms, red and green peppers, all of the veggies were very fresh. The peppers stood out adding a slight tang to the flavor of the dish. So many flavors and textures, so little time…

ust Rennie’s Pastry Chef Terry Spindler heralds from Haubstadt, Ind., and he holds an Associate Degree from Ivy Tech in Indianapolis. He first learned to bake from his mother, and he has worked in the food industry all of his life. Spindler has chosen to reside in the Evansville area because his family lives here, and he shares that his decision to be a part of the Just Rennie’s family came about because “the people here really seem to enjoy what they do. The owners, Doug and Marla Rennie, have a passion for what they do and have a vision of where they want their business to go.” In terms of what keeps Spindler passionate about his job, he shares, “I have always enjoyed baking and working with food

in general. It is very rewarding to go to work each day and create delicious food, but also, for people to take that food and enjoy it.” He goes on to tell that his favorite thing about Evansville is that, “It is close to home. I lived in Indianapolis for a couple of years while going to school, but I had no desire to remain up there. Southern Indiana is my home.” Just Rennie’s Cookie Co. offers Chocolate Chunk, Chocolate Chunk Walnut, Peanut Butter, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chunk, Double Chocolate Chunk, White Chocolate Pecan, Oatmeal Raisin and Chef Doug’s Gourmet Cookies. Spindler has a hard time picking just one as his favorite, though. He shares, “Since I have a sweet tooth, there is not too much on the dessert menu that I don’t like. As for a favorite, I really can’t pinpoint one thing.” Co-owner Doug Rennie adds, “I love to eat the Marla’s famous Just Rennie’s Cookies! We ship them to military bases and all over the United States. This year, we will be launching our cookies to be shipped all over the world. That should be really exciting!” Just Rennie’s Cookie Co. is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. This dessert side of the business is open all year long. They start by selecting the finest ingredients, like Callebaut imported Belgian chocolate, premium grade AA butter, eggs fresh from the farm, brown sugar and pure vanilla, and then they “pile up the dough and bake it just right to create the moistest, most satisfying cookie you’ll ever taste.” On the other side of the coin is Just Rennie’s, which offers Deli Salads, Healthy Salads, Gourmet Panini Sandwiches, Wraps, Steak House Roll Sandwiches, Route 11 Gourmet Chips, Just Rennie’s Cookies, Gourmet Cookie Bars, Belgian Brownies and Panache Gourmet Coffees. They also sell the gourmet beans by the pound. Just Rennie’s Catering offers a Tuscan Wine Room for 48 people, and they are available for corporate and home parties. They are also one of two exclusive caterers at the Old Post Office, which has room for around 300 to 350 people. They also cater to the Evansville Museum, Koch’s family Children’s Museum, the Pagoda and the Old Court House. The Old Post Office, though, also serves as base for part of their business. They rent space there where they manufacture their Just Rennie’s Cookies as well as cook their catering items. As to why Spindler enjoys being a part of the Just Rennie’s family, he concludes, “I have known Doug and Marla for years, but when I came to talk to them about a position here, I could sense a vibrant energy about their attitude toward their business and wanted to be a part of it.”

2014 by Abigail Adler, Marketing Director of Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden
A
favorite quote from a self-described “Ambassador of Cool” and devoted Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden Zoo Brew attendee:
“It’s a good time; maybe even a great time. It combines some of my favorite things - many, many craft beers, eating with my hands, good music and watching peacocks and girls, with totally not ‘zoo hill-friendly shoes’ on, strut their stuff. If that’s not a GREAT time, then I don’t know what is!” - Three-time
Zoo Brew attendee and “Ambassador of Cool.” Wayne (age 31). Mr. Ambassador, you did forget a few things, but we’ll blame the beer. Zoo Brew also offers wine sampling, an awesome outdoor atmosphere, LIVE bands, numerous food stations AND all proceeds directly support your zoo. We feel confident in declaring it to be a night out unlike any other! Below we’ve compiled a list of the top five ways to enjoy Zoo Brew: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Wear sensible shoes. (or don’t—stilettos + craft beer + hilly terrain = EXCELLENT people watching!) Go as a group. Think “group date,” it’s just more fun that way! Be adventurous—just try it! You may never have a chance to try this many unique beer and wine samples again! Consider VIP tickets. VIP tickets perks include: separate parking lot and VIP entrance and access to the indoor lounge with VIP food and drinks. Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden is YOUR zoo, and Zoo Brew is a great way to both support and enjoy it.
The 2014 Zoo Brew takes place on June 7th from 7 – 10 p.m. Tickets are available online beginning the first week of May at www.meskerparkzoo.com. DO NOT DELAY! Zoo Brew has many repeat attendees and sells out very quickly! Wayne, and fellow “Ambassadors of Cool,” we look forward to raising our glass with you at Zoo Brew. For more information, please visit www.meskerparkzoo.com or call (812) 435-6143.

There is a
New Sheriff in Town
L
ast month, it was announced that IU Medical Center would be locating in the heart of the River City. Residents and local officials celebrated this announcement and what it means for Evansville; sharp young minds locating here for schooling, a financial stimulus to the city, and the furthering development of Evansville’s medical industry. The IU medical school will undoubtedly have a positive impact for the city, but to fully capitalize on this new opportunity we have to keep the ball rolling. The old saying “if you build it, they will come” doesn’t always ring true. Sure, Evansville will have a brand new medical school, but we have to also provide a community to prospective students that will attract young people. As is proven with each passing spring and the college graduations associated with it, the best and brightest of our own community choose to start their professional lives out elsewhere. This migration of the educated young professionals that are vital to the growth of any community is driven by lack of career opportunities; but also by the lack of initiative of local government to do what it can with respect to public health and infrastructure.
In order for Evansville to shift from what it is to today to a city that retains our best young minds, several fundamental changes must be put into place. Most of the statewide and national headlines about Evansville have been about leading in categories such as the misery index, obesity, number of methamphetamine lab busts, or as happened most recently, the undoing of Evansville’s smokefree air ordinance. During the 2011 campaign cycle, now Mayor Lloyd Winnecke and several city councilmen said they were fully committed to passing a comprehensive smokefree air ordinance, like the one Vanderburgh County has had for some time. The ordinance that eventually passed provided an exemption for the casino and was ultimately struck down because the state’s Supreme Court decided it essentially meant that the casino had paid the city off for their allowance to smoke. The cliché movie theme where the casino runs the town has sadly become dangerously close to a reality for Evansville. Mayor Lloyd Winnecke says the IU Medical School has a potential economic impact of $340 million by 2020, that’s over $56 million per year, while the casino contribution pales in comparison, coming in at about $12 million per year. If the city looks to their biggest funding contributor to set the tone for public health for the community, the casino should take note that there is a new sheriff in town. It’s time to really start making some decisions about what we want the next headline regarding Evansville to read. It’s time for our Mayor and other local officials to start putting their campaign promises and their health initiatives into action. It’s time for local officials to start creating an environment for the success of the community at large. And to be a great host city to our new medical school, we should prioritize public health as issue #1 for the city of Evansville. The easiest place to start is with our smokefree air ordinance—the city should pass a new ordinance that protects every worker and levels the playing field for every business.
If you agree, we encourage you to read more about the Smokefree Evansville coalition on page 89 and get involved in the cause. Contact the Smokefree Communities office at 812-303-7378 to join our effort.

t Takes A Village Rescue Center, located at 1417 N. Stockwell Rd., is hosting the 3rd annual Canine Carnival and Mardi Paws on Saturday May 10th. This family-friendly event begins at 2 p.m. and includes activities for children, adults and “four legged family members.” The event includes but is not limited to a variety of arts and crafts options, pet photos, a dog costume contest, dog demos and a silent auction. Along with the crafts, kids that attend the Canine Carnival and Mardi Paws will also have access to face painting, animal balloons and carnival games. In addition, there will be a kissing booth featuring some of the rescue center’s adoptable dogs. This booth provides a great opportunity for participants to become familiar with some of the animals at the center, and get to know some potential future family members. Also, a few local celebrities will be stopping buy for a go in the dunking booth. If all that wasn’t enough, the event also includes bar-b-q and a beer garden. The center is charging $25 for a slab of ribs and $7 for half a chicken. Additionally, there will be a number of local bands playing in the beer garden which has a $5 cover charge after 6 p.m. Entry is free but donations are always encouraged. It Takes a Village’s Canine Carnival and Mardi Paws “is a great way to spend the day and save the lives of many dogs.”

“As we go on/ We remember/ All the times we/ Had together/ And as our lives change/Come whatever /We will still be/ Friends forever.” – Vitamin C “Graduation (Friends Forever)”
A
pril showers bring May flowers! May flowers being graduates! Congratulations to all the people graduating this May. I remember when I was graduating we all kept singing that song. Laughing - sometimes crying - reminiscing on great times. Graduation can be such a bittersweet time. You spend years on top of years with these people... And all of a sudden, it seems it’s ALL OVER. Let me be the first to tell you, it isn’t over. It is a beautiful beginning. I wasn’t a cool kid in high school or in a sorority in college, so although I did have good moments in school, I was very hopeful to see what was next. I am going to leave you hanging on what is next, just BE EXCITED.
In all your excitement, don’t forget to thank the woman that got you there! You know, the woman that had to change all your stinky diapers, participate in super late nights (not the good kind) and a lot of the times was your 24/7 bank/diner. Mother’s Day is just around the corner! Save some of that graduation cash and get your Mom the one thing she really wants, relaxation. Facials, massages and sometimes, just peace and quiet are high up on their gift list. Let the summer freedom commence! —Kana L. Brown www.kanabrown.com According2kana@gmail.com Special note for my Harrison High School class of 2007:
Let us remember and cherish our times we had with Katelyn Shea Beck & Sean Michael Malicoat. Sending constant positive vibes to their families! Rest in Peace. Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • May 2014

If you’re one of the many people who want something to do in Evansville, but lack the funds to do so, you have a fantastic opportunity on Sunday, May 18. The third annual “Evansville Streets Alive!” will be held on North Main Street and in Garvin Park this year.
O
riginally held on Fulton Avenue, the Evansville Streets Alive! festival was moved this year so that Garvin Park could be utilized and to also help with the Jacobsville neighborhood renewal program. “Streets Alive is what’s called an ‘open streets’ event, in which all vehicle traffic is blocked and the street is opened for people to walk, bike, skate, dance, etc.,” Roberta Heiman, president of the Evansville-Area Trails Coalition, says. The event will feature the Delaware Dash, a 5k run/walk as a fundraiser for the Delaware School as the kick-off activity, bike repair and bike rides, Zumba and tai chi classes and two firsts to the event. “Mass Community Yoga” at Bosse Field, and the “AWE-some Parade,” in which anyone can participate as long as they have a non-motorized ride to accompany them (bicycles, tricycles, skateboards, strollers, even wheelchairs).

“The whole idea is to get people out of their cars and becoming physically active in a fun, social atmosphere, affordable for everyone,” Heiman says. “A secondary important goal is to boost businesses in the city neighborhoods where we hold the festivals. Most of the businesses on North Main Street, for example, are small locally-owned restaurants and service companies.” The event is organized by the Evansville-Area Trails Coalition, which partnered with various other organizations, such as Jacobville Join In, Smokefree Communities and the Emergency Management Agency. Admission into the event is free and most of the events are free as well. The festival will begin at 12:30 p.m. and runs until 4 p.m.

localtalent Josh Shotwell
I
t’s late at night, everyone else is asleep and Josh Shotwell puts on a pot of coffee and prepares to put brush to canvas. Oddly enough, he is the commonality between the Playboy mansion and Christina Ricci. Shotwell has been an artist his entire life. He started out watching his mother, also an artist, and drew through most of high school. Now, his primary medium is paint and canvas. He was a flight attendant for four years at the Evansville regional airport and got into painting when he was laid-off. His style has been described as similar to Tim Burton’s, who happens to be an inspiration for Shotwell, along with Van Gogh. “I like the idea of something being dark, but it’s colorful at the same time,” Shotwell says. It was at the airport that he happened to chance upon Christina Ricci. Ricci flew into Evansville Regional Airport and Shotwell was helping her with her bags, they got talking about what there was to do in town and Shotwell explained his major pastime was to paint at home. The two struck a deal that he would paint something for her if she signed a blank canvas for him to keep. On the canvas she signed he chose to paint Ricci as a slightly older Wednesday Addams. He still has the painting to this day and says he intends to keep it. “She’s always been a favorite. So that was a huge thing, to meet her,” Shotwell says. Emotions and life events really influence Shotwell’s work and he often needs music, a movie or a television show going in the background to help him concentrate, though he says he cannot work around other people. He says he

paints late at night, when everyone else is asleep, because he feels like it helps with his head to feel like nothing is going on in the world. It also is nearly impossible for him to paint during the day. In addition to painting, Shotwell works in stained glass, a very time consuming craft. He mostly works on vases and candle holders for the time being. He just donated five stained glass pieces and two paintings to Holly’s House. This is his second year donating. The last painting Shotwell actually sold was of a phoenix, painted pink for breast cancer. He sold it to a man who lost his wife to breast cancer. Aside from Christina Ricci, Shotwell also has two paintings hanging in the Playboy mansion, one of which was shown in an episode of E!’s The Girls Next Door. One of Hugh Hefner’s girlfriends, Bridget Marquardt, commented on Shotwell’s work. “I was big into Myspace at the time and I was friends with Bridget,” Shotwell says. Shotwell decided to send her two paintings. The one that appeared on The Girls Next Door portrayed Hefner and his girlfriends. Hefner thought it was well done, so he sent Shotwell a letter, thanking him. He has also painted David Henrie of Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place, as well as scenes of downtown Evansville, the tardis, from Dr. Who and scenes from A Nightmare Before Christmas. As we all go to bed tonight, there is a good chance that Josh Shotwell will be brewing a pot of coffee, listening to some music and brushing his artistry across a canvas while all is quiet in the world. —Justin Law

O
nce upon a time, a trio of local boys fell in love with a group of glam rockers from New York. Friends to this day, Sean Fuller (Florida Georgia Line), Jeremy Spencer (Five Finger Death Punch) and Joe Meleski (Flat Stanley) discovered the music of Kiss at an early age. All three would grow up to become hypertalented drummers thanks to the cat behind the kit, Peter Criss. For Meleski, his rhythmic style just made sense. “I started seriously playing music then,” he says. “I was around music all the time. My brothers play guitar, and my mom plays piano and sings. In my family, you’re either going to be an artist or an engineer like my dad’s side. I didn’t want to sit around and do numbers all day.” In fifth grade, Meleski played in the school band, moving from snare to bass to kettle drum. He finally got the opportunity to play a full set freshman year at Heritage Hills High School, but the instruction was short-lived. “I had the choice to either go on a business trip with my dad or attend band camp,” Meleski says. “The school said I would get an F if I missed camp, but I quit, anyway, and went with my dad. I started playing on my own and taking a few lessons from Greg Martin, a Berkeley graduate.” As the 80s gave way to the 90s, Meleski was in full metal mode, worshipping the likes of self-taught, former Ozzy Osbourne drummer, Tommy Aldridge. He joined Nine Stitches, a heavy local band that briefly charted an
album on top 100 college radio – right alongside Metallica and Pantera. But after several mini tours that covered Nashville, Louisville and Indianapolis, the ride came to an end for Meleski when his wife got pregnant. He quit the band, cut his hair and vowed to grow up; but he didn’t leave music totally behind. Meleski soon discovered there was money to be made in cover songs. With help from his brothers and other local talent, he played over 120 shows a year, eventually scoring his first (but not his last) drumming stint with popular local outfit Flat Stanley. At the time, the band’s set list included lots of pop metal and hard rock – a perfect fit for Meleski’s aggressive drumming style. But a burgeoning career in broadcasting became a priority, and he dropped out of the tri-state music scene all together. Ironically, it was Meleski’s job that reignited his passion for music. Four years ago, at a broadcasting convention in Las Vegas, he was invited to see Monster Circus, a collection of former hair metal stars including Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider. After meeting and talking with some of his heroes, Meleski returned home full of fire. He reconnected with Flat Stanley and once again began keeping time for a band whose repertoire had greatly expanded during his downtime. “We play everything from Robin Thicke to Florida Georgia Line to Motley Crue,” Meleski says. “I’ve played with lots of musicians in the area, and these guys are just really good people – all good fathers, too. They’ve done lots of charity work over the years like Toys for Tots. Our goal now is just to have fun and entertain.” The band has opened for national acts in Owensboro as well as played the biggest and best clubs in Evansville. Meleski hopes his second stint in Flat Stanley is a long one and that an album of original material eventually surfaces. But he’s grateful for the opportunity to rock, regardless. “Music drives me and helps me maintain my sanity – it’s been around me my whole life.” —Thomas Ellis

Q
: What are some of the ways you make your wedding cakes/ cupcakes stand out both visually and to the taste buds simultaneously? How do you cater to the couples creative preferences and suggestions?
Pinch of Sugar
Our goal is to provide a beautiful and moist wedding cake to our customers. We always try to cater to their wishes. However, if they suggest something that is not structurally possible, then we will offer them an alternative suggestion. We have made some very unusual wedding and groom’s cakes, one cake looked like a corset with a feather pin, another resembled the lace of their wedding dress, while yet another was draped with pearls. We have also made “Oogie Boogie” from the Tim Burton Film The Nightmare Before Christmas, a guitar, a plate of sushi for a groom’s cake, also tackle boxes, football helmets and stadiums. If they imagine it, we will deliver it! We also do a lot of fondant covered cakes, which give a very smooth appearance and have a layer of buttercream underneath. Our cakes are very moist and our buttercream frosting recipe isn’t too sweet and very light.
Q
: What can the bride and groom expect when they come for their consultation?
Daily’s Annex Bakery
We guide you every step of the way, working specifically with your vision and budget. We even go as far as coordinating with your wedding colors and fabrics. We know pricing and cost are imperative. So, Daily’s has a wide-range of prices. We provide albums to look through so we can marry you and your spouse’s ideas to really make the cake special for your occasion. Daily’s provides the sophistication and variety that the couple wants with 40 working flavors of cake like Apple Pumpkin Spice, Amaretto Cherry and Pecan Maple. All fruit flavors of cake use fresh fruit. We even take time of year into consideration. No detail is overlooked. We use a 50-year-old buttercream recipe that is the real deal, and the bride and groom can watch as the icing is made. Let the experience of a three generation, family-owned bakery work for you. Q
l
: What makes your wedding planning company different from any of the others out there? Wouldn’t a planner take all of the fun out of doing it yourself? What if you don’t think you can afford a planner?
Handmade Vintage Events
I’m different from other planners because I do a lot hands-on with my brides. A wedding planner will usually help with budget, design, vendor recommendations and of course, managing your wedding day. I also help in other ways, like helping you design and print custom invites, handcraft thoughtful gifts for your bridal party and hunt down those must-have accessories for your reception. Having a planner doesn’t take away from the experience of planning your wedding; it just takes the stress out of it. You get to do as much or as little as you choose. In fact, I specialize in helping DIY brides, and love to get crafty. To accommodate brides of all budgets, my packages are very reasonably-priced, and I help you save money every step of the way. If you just need a little guidance, consultations start at just $50. So, don’t hesitate!

Just Rennie’s Catering
The most popular dishes that we see at weddings are chicken and pork entrées because they please the majority of the guests. These entrees also fit within most couple’s budgets. We are currently seeing quite a few weddings that are serving beef tenderloin. The quality of the beef is very moist, tender and pleasing to a large crowd’s palette. When making a decision regarding whether your meal should be buffet style or plated, look at where the wedding reception will be located. If your venue has a large kitchen and your budget is more flexible, then a plated meal may be an option that is appealing to you. If your budget is smaller or you have a large crowd to feed, a buffet dinner may be more your style because you can feed the guests quickly and keep the food hot.

Goose Island Beer Co. 312 Urban Pale Ale
Daniel Knight • 3
This relatively new APA (American Pale Ale) option from Goose Island looks great upon pouring with an eye-catching light copper color and ample, appetizing light beige head that leaves classic “ale lacing.” Unfortunately, for me, that’s where the love affair ended. The aroma is mildly floral with citrusy hops but somehow funky, and a bit too unassuming. As for flavor, hops are just like in the scent except augmented a little bit, with the bitterness and spiciness stepped-up just a bit. Underneath the hops and spiciness there is some subtle malt flavor ending with a lingering light hop bite. You’ll not find this one on my shopping list.
Paul Bragin • 4.5
This amber beer formed no head when poured in the glass. The distinct smell of hops with pine notes are present in the first whiff from the beer. The first taste of the beer is balanced, with a pleasant hoppy aftertaste. This beer has a lot of hops flavor with only a moderate amount of actual hops in it. This could be a good beer for hopheads as well as those who think they dislike hoppy beers.
Jabez Martinez • 4.5
This is a clear, light amber-colored beer. It is a very smooth and light beer that is very refreshing. The grainy flavors were good and like most Goose Island offerings, I enjoyed it.

Two Brothers Revelry Imperial Red Ale
Daniel Knight • 4
Two Brothers of Warrenville, Ill. (Chicago suburb) has a long list of fine brews. Revelry (9.5% ABV) pours a hazy, dark copper color with a rich, thick beige head— nice lacing too. Smell is a pungent maltiness followed by a vanilla note and a light hop presence. The flavor is malty with a nice hoppy bitterness and citrus notes at the finish. I really enjoyed this brew but actually expected the flavor to be bolder. All-in-all, still a great ale that I’d never say no to.

Kona Brewing Co. Longboard Island Lager
Daniel Knight • 3.5
From Hawaii comes this American Pale Lager that pours up a straw yellow-gold, essentially clear in appearance. It produces a loose white froth with a multitude of varying sized bubbles that are pretty but don’t last long. The taste and mouth-feel are light with a lean, classic malt profile. There’s a hint of spicy hops there too. It delivers a classic taste while being light (summer/hot weather beer) on the palette. Easy drinking with a balance of wheat and malt flavors, make this pretty good beer for its style.
Upon pouring, a decent white head forms that takes its time evaporating with this deep copper-colored beer. Citrusy hop notes fill the nose, followed by a faint scent of malt. Hops first dominate the taste, followed by some toasted malt flavors. This will pair well with strong meat dishes, spicy dishes and hearty soups, like stew or chili. This beer may not be for everyone, but hopheads should definitely seek out this seasonal ale while it’s still available.

This is a garnet-colored beer since it is Red Ale. I could handle the hopped-up flavors well because they were not over powering. It did have a crisp finish and nice aroma. It also had a 9.5 % ABV, but it didn’t have the strong alcohol flavor other high alcohol content beers have.

This golden-colored beer forms a thin, white head that quickly disappears. The familiar smell of malt and hops enters the nose. This beer has a low hop profile with a balance of malt that beer drinkers have come to expect from a typical lager. However, this is a big improvement over the mass produced lagers that dominate the market. This beer will be great to enjoy while watching the game or during outdoor events, like cookouts. This is a hazy, yellow beer, and I would have to say, the least favorite of the Kona beers I have tried. It was a little fruity with some yeast, but nothing super. That being said, this brew is much better than your average domestic.
Stone Brewing Co. Go To IPA
Paul Bragin • 4.5
This beer forms an extremely thin white head that disappears almost instantly. The rich scent of hops fill the nose, mostly citrusy grapefruit notes, but some peach and melon flavors also come through. The grapefruit notes continue upon drinking the beer. This beer will intimidate some drinkers, but hoppy beer aficionados will want to try this “session” IPA during the hot summer months. It should pair very well with spicier foods.
Jabez Martinez• 3.5 Daniel Knight • 4.5
I take credit for single-handedly contributing to Stone Brewing Company’s financial success. Go To IPA is billed as a “session brew.” It poursup a mostly clear, golden color with one and a half fingers of fluffy white head. Its aroma is citrus, very grapefruit with a light resin and hops touch. The flavor is delightful with lots of hops, herbal and citrus notes. Surprisingly flavorful, well-balanced and satisfying for such a low (4.5%) ABV. I recommend this one if you enjoy IPAs. If you’ve not tried an IPA before, this would make a nice intro brew as well with its light drinkability.
This is a light, golden yellow beer with a lot of fruity aromas. Like most IPA for me, the hops just knock out any other flavors. I am truly trying to come to the hop side, and to be fair, this beer is not bad. But in the end, like most IPAs, the bitterness coated my tongue and stifled all flavor.

“THE EMERALD TOUR” by Nick Durcholz

M
ake sure to witness their vibrant show at the Old National Event Plaza (formerly the Centre). In light of the performance, their balletic violinist/fiddler Mairead Nesbitt, set aside some precious time from the road to speak with News4U about everything from her musical upbringing to being a huge fan of Chris Thile. New4U (N4U): Can you tell us the story of when you received your first violin? Mairead Nesbitt (MN): Oh yeah! A friend of the family named Tommy Robinson was a violin dealer and before he would sell a violin, he would give me the violin to play for three or four months to open up the sound of the violin. They sound a lot better when they have been played a lot before you sell it, and of course, you get more money for it then (laughs). I would get to play really good violins. This is from when I was about 14 onward. N4U: What can fans expect to see and hear that is new in the Emerald Tour? MN: There are some news pieces in there
that people will absolutely love, that are very dynamic and very lively. There’s a really fantastic dance and percussion piece which has never been seen before. It’s absolutely beautiful. And, there is also Anthony Byrne, our Celtic bagpiper, he’s amazing. He does this fantastic new finale. Then, I get to do a really lovely solo in the first half with the band. I actually reworked a solo that the public wanted to hear again called “Butterfly.” And of course, massive numbers that people really want to hear, they have all been newly arranged and are like a breath of fresh air. N4U: While writing music, what do you find that a majority of your inspiration stems from? MN: It depends… I think when I was writing my own album, Raining Up, my family was a big inspiration to me because a lot of my family played on that album with me. Also, I think that if you are writing music for other people communication is very, very important. Communication is a massive inspiration for me.

f you haven’t visited the Metro Sports Center lately, now is the time to come in and check out the two huge remodels that have greatly enhanced the playing experience at the tri-state’s premier athletic facility. Completed at the end of April, the most recent remodel featured the installation of a Next Generation PROField Turf on the indoor soccer and multi-sport field. Metro is now the ONLY Midwest athletic facility that offers this new field turf. Imagine the feel of playing outdoors but with all the comforts of indoor activity, including a climate controlled environment, concessions and full locker rooms. It’s the perfect set-up for athletes of all ages who want to play soccer and many other sports all four seasons. The other big remodeling project at Metro was completed back in September 2012. By popular demand, an additional volleyball/basketball court was installed, providing even more practice space and opportunity for competition. In fact, Metro now encompasses more than 35,000 square-feet of space with three indoor fields and courts that are used for a variety of sports and leagues. There’s plenty of room for everyone at Metro, and the public can always rent space for practices, games, parties, events & reunions. “It’s always FUN at Metro Sports Center.” —Johnny Fletcher

LOCAL BAND SPOTLI G HT
An ch o r D ow n ABOUT THE BAND: We are five best friends: Keaghan Holland (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Jake Stover (lead guitar), Ernesto Gonzalez (bass), Zach Young (drums) and Matthew Adam (keyboard). We went through lineup changes throughout 2013 until around the end of the year, when we finalized the group. In September, we added Zach and around December, we added Matthew. The band name came from a song by the Real Friends about standing up for yourself. WHAT THEY COVER/ DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE: The only song we have covered live is “Dear Maria Count Me In” by All Time Low. Although, we are currently working on a cover of “Sugar We’re Going Down” by Fall Out Boy to play live. Otherwise, all of our originals stay around the genres of pop punk and alternative. THEIR INFLUENCES: Our influences are Fall Out Boy, Real Friends, All Time Low, Foo Fighters and State Champs, as well as a majority of the punk scene. WHERE YOU CAN CATCH THEIR PERFORMANCES: We have played Wired and The Hatch in Evansville. We have an upcoming show on May 5th in Bedford, Ind. Find us on: Facebook: AnchorDown812, Twitter: AnchorxDown812, Youtube: AnchorDownMusic, Soundcloud: anchordown. We also will be on iTunes, Spotify and more with our new single “White Girl Wasted.” The single should be out early May. Look for the links when we post them!
cd reviews Emily Kinney
Expired Love Em-K Music / Thirty Tigers 3/5 There are a number of actors who moonlight as musicians – most famously, Keanu Reeves and Jared Leto; even Johnny Depp rocks out when he’s not busy confounding critics. But some people might be surprised to learn that “Walking Dead” star Beth Greene has been quietly carving out an indie pop niche since the release of her debut album, 2011’s Blue Toothbrush. The juxtaposition of her saccharine-sweet, shimmery sound against the violence and gore of the AMC hit show is jarring. But that just makes Expired Love all the more intriguing. Speaking of juxtaposition, opening track “Expired Lover” is a tale of lost love set to a joyous soundtrack – peppy acoustic guitar, handclaps, chimes and Kinney’s cutesy vocal delivery. But with lyrics like “The truth is I can’t stand your face / when I think of all the love we made,” there’s clearly a tug of war between melody and message. “Doctor” follows the same formula, a sugar rush of music and voice that’s equally conflicted: “No, I am not a doctor, but I’ve got some extra time / I’ve got some drugs I keep in stock called Vodka and red wine.” Backed only by strings and sparse guitar. Expired Love may be miles away from zombies, but there’s just enough lyrical darkness to offset the adorable act.
Sideshow Romance This Means War EP Self-Released 4/5
Sideshow Romance has straddled the fine line between cover songs and original material for awhile. It’s a thankless job sometimes, trying to keep crowds happy while maintaining the drive to succeed on your own terms. Granted, the band has shared the stage with a number of hard rock heroes and built a sizeable following. But they somehow deserve more, because This Means War is a quantum leap in every way: musically, vocally and sonically. With incredibly solid production that dwarfs most area recordings and song craft indicative of a band that’s been in the trenches with the likes of Puddle of Mudd and Papa Roach, the EP is a wake-up call to record labels everywhere. Crammed with a combination of heaviness and hooks, This Means War recalls the very best of classic metal and modern rock. “Flood” rides a rocking three chord riff that keeps building in power; the chorus is urgent and immensely catchy. The title track is introduced by a militaristic beat and spidery guitar that slowly picks up speed. Lyrically, it’s ominous: “It’s gonna end here tonight / when our two worlds collide.” “Goodbye” is all about fast fingers on the fretboard but never at the expense of melody. Ultimately, that’s what makes This Means War so good. This band means business.

Shining
One One One Prosthetic Records 2.5/5 The third album in the “Blackjazz” trilogy, One One One is the latest offering from Norwegian metal outfit Shining. 2010’s Blackjazz and 2011’s Live Blackjazz both drew attention for an innovative mix of free jazz and distortion – a sound that sure looked odd on paper but in practice, blew minds. But rather than continue in the same exploratory vein, One One One dispenses with complexity and goes for the metal anthem jugular. Each track seems pieced together with various classic riffs from songs throughout the history of the genre. This time around, it’s all about the F-word – fun. But lost is the musical invention that Shining achieved on the previous two releases, reduced here to a metal mashup with relentless Marilyn Manson meets Lemmy vocals. It’s not surprising then, that the best moments on the album are the occasional wigged-out musical packages that feature leader Jorgen Munkeby’s intense saxophone blitzkriegs (“I Won’t Forget” and “The One Inside,” in particular). “How Your Story Ends” comes in blazing with a sax solo that cleverly becomes part of the opening riff of the song before the guitars fully take over – and the song immediately gets less interesting. Closing track “Paint the Sky Black” is four minutes of screaming and zero subtlety. That’s clearly the aim of One One One, but it’s exhausting.
Sevendust
Time Travelers & Bonfires 7 Bros. Records 4/5 It’s more and more common for bands to bankroll projects via fan-driven campaigns like PledgeMusic. The popular fundraising site effectively cuts out the middle man (the industry), allowing albums like Time Travelers & Bonfires to be made free from outside influences – a win-win for everyone involved. Featuring re-recorded classics alongside six brand new tracks, Sevendust’s first acoustic album since 2004’s live Southside Double-Wide should please both the Dust diehards and attract new blood, too. The band manages to pull off a delicate balancing act: breathing life into old material with a fresh musical approach while still keeping the soul of the songs intact. Even more impressive, new compositions like “Come Down” and “Under It All” do not sound out of place – the transition from one period to another is seamless. So often the intensity of heavy rock songs gets lost when the distortion is removed, but Lajon and the boys seem to relish the opportunity to strip their classics to the musical bone and build them back up. The best example is “Crucified” which features re-imagined verses but smartly sticks to the heartfelt chorus. “Denial,” while slowed to a crawl, loses none of the original version’s power and, in fact, sounds more musically relevant in 2014. Fan favorite “Karma” stays a bit truer to the Cold Day Memory recording but the acoustic reading seriously amplifies the melodies once veiled by feedback. —Thomas Ellis
Japanther
Instant Money Magic Seayou Records
This colorful little duo, Japanther, got their start in Brooklyn, NY back in 2001, Japanther has become known for its unconventional performances, such as performing with large dinosaurs in the back of a moving truck. The band has a punk rock sound, reminding me heavily of the Ramones. The duo’s new LP, Instant Money Magic is available now.
In The Valley Below Man Girl Capitol/Caroline Records
I give you In The Valley Below another interesting duo. Their voices blend together well to create an intense sound and rhythmical party for your eardrums. With only six tracks, three of which are differing renditions of the same song, the track that stood out the most was “Stand Up.” Both of their voices blend together to weave a dark little story that grows on me more each time I give it a listen. The band’s EP Man Girl drops May 6.
The Burning of Rome Year of the Ox Surfdog Records
Here we are with The Burning of Rome’s new album Year of the Ox. This is one of those rare bands that is both talented and bizarre enough to keep you listening from one song to another. The music itself makes me feel as if I am trapped somewhere in a science fiction film, and the lyrics are every bit as strange. The two songs that stuck out the most were “Terrible Tales From Tocqueville,” which I enjoyed, and “Space Age Stockholm Syndrome,” which I didn’t as much. Year of the Ox will be released May 20.

Q
: What advice can you give to a couple that likes the idea of lingerie, but may be a little inexperienced in buying it? Are there currently any popular items for men?
Exotica Romance & Fantasy Superstore
For the couple that may be new to the idea of lingerie, or may be a little embarrassed buying it for the ďŹ rst time, we suggest starting with a basic baby doll or teddy negligee. Go shopping for the items together so that each partner has an option in selecting the piece. Be sure to try on the clothing so that a proper ďŹ t is ensured before purchasing. For the more conservative man, may we suggest trunks? Which are cut shorter than boxers. For the individual that is a little more daring, thongs or briefs are popular options.

Capturing the Moment
Q
: Do you supply props for the guests to wear? What are some of the funniest props you have seen in photos?
FunShots Photobooth
Yes, a photo booth supplier should always include props for the guests to wear. It is the guest’s choice to dress up or not. However, props really help the people who don’t usually like to have their picture taken to relax and have a good time. At one recent event, a large group young men in their midtwenties came in mumbling to themselves, “I’m not going in there.” (Referring to the booth). Then, after a few drinks and a few hours, they emerged from the booth in pink fluffy crowns and boas, saying, “Come on guys, lets go!” It’s very popular among groups to coordinate hats, boas and glasses. They make fabulous group photos.

Your Romantic Getaway
Q
: What are the advantages of using a travel agent for your honeymoon over booking online by yourself?
Destination Everywhere Travel
While online services are great tools for research purposes, they can’t do everything. My saying is: ‘Use a website to look and travel professional to book.’ When brides and grooms-tobe ask me why they should use my services, I make sure that I explain that I provide a service. Online booking services are rarely available if a question or circumstance arises. I am just a phone call, email or text away. My job doesn’t end once the balance is paid in full. Many perks come from hiring a travel agent, like free basic round trip transfers, champagne and breakfast in bed, room upgrades and more. Many of my vendors allow me to add special amenities for my honeymoon couples thanks to the professional relationships established through years of business.
