Chris Young’s Liquid NEON Tour at the Centre

C

ountry superstar Chris Young, fresh off the release of a major album and run of number one singles, is set to light up the Centre when his Liquid NEON Tour reaches Evansville on December 1st. His latest release, neon debuted at number four on the Billboard charts, selling 72,000 copies in the first week while spawning a hugely successful single, “Tomorrow.” Young’s fourth single in a row to reach the top of the country charts. The accolades keep coming. Young received a Grammy nomination for the song “Gettin’ You Home,” a showcase for his deep vocals and passion for the ladies. In turn, his fans have expressed their support by nominating Young for multiple American Country Awards, not to mention filling the seats at every tour stop. Riding this wave of adulation, he has appeared on such shows as Good Morning America and Jimmy Kimmel Live! According to his website, Young concentrated on music from an early age, spending his high school years performing in plays and desperately trying to ward off the impending doom of college. But once there, his focus became intensely clear. “I did the thing all parents love to hear – I dropped out of school and started making music full time. I knew without a shadow of a doubt that music is what drives me and it was what I had to do,” said Young. He fully dedicated himself to his craft and hit the road, playing 150 shows a year, all the while building up a rabid fan base that eventually convinced Nashville it had a star in the making. A debut album was released in 2006, kickstarting a career full of highs. Four albums later, Chris Young is at the top of the country music charts, peaking at just the right moment. “I really do believe in timing,” said Young. “Everybody has a different point in their career when things start to come together and click, when it’s your time.” —Thomas Ellis

COOKING SPOTLIGHT

Making your Holidays Rosy A s the leaves change and the temperatures drop, Mark and Cindy Schmitt of Rose Hill Café and Schmitt Catering have a few recommendations to liven up you fall meals: smoked meats, sweet potato casserole and apple fritters. Cindy believes that a mini-glazed smoked ham is perfect for holidays because it is such a traditional dish. Mark is the meat expert of the family, and his meat smoking process includes a combination of smoke, time, water and wood chips. His 20 years’ experience is apparent when he cooks meat, and he credits how the meat is prepared. As well as, where it is placed on the rack to the success of the slow cook. Sweet potato casserole makes an excellent side dish for fall because fresh sweet potatoes are abundant at this time of year, and pecans are in season. Sweet potato casserole can be described as a combination between a pumpkin pie and a pecan pie. The sweet potato gives it a savory element, while the pecan topping makes it sweet. Cindy recommends using fresh sweet potatoes versus canned, and she notes the importance of measuring correctly for casserole recipes. Her only variance is that she likes to double the toppings listed on recipes, and she has a preference for dark brown sugar over light. She also adds, “Read the recipe before attempting [sweet potato casserole]. Then read it again to make sure that you understand it.” Clear comprehension of the recipe steps is paramount to a successful dish. Apple fritters are a battered apple dessert that is deep fried and dusted with confectioners’ sugar. A popular dish at the fall festival, this dessert can also be made at home. Apple fritters consist of flour, salt, baking powder, sugar, egg, milk, butter or margarine, vanilla extract and diced apples. Some recipes call for orange rind and/or orange juice. Cindy recommends using fresh Granny Smith apples and substituting baking soda instead of yeast in recipes. She notes that the key to a good apple fritter is to fry them until they float to the top of the

fryer to make sure that they are cooked all the way through. Two other tips for the perfect apple fritter are to closely monitor the temperature of your fryer and to make sure that you separately mix your wet and dry ingredients before adding everything together. Consistency is also important; dough that you would use to make bread can be described as a semi-solid paste. Batter that you would make for a crepe falls in a more liquid category. What you make it for apple fritters, it should fall somewhere in the middle of that spectrum. To display your apple fritters, Cindy recommends placing them on a plate after you roll them in cinnamon and sugar, then sprinkle them with a powdered sugar, followed by a caramel drizzle. Recipes for both sweet potato casserole and apple fritters can easily be found online, but for those in a rush or not wanting to prepare these items themselves, the two time Taste of Southern Indiana and 2012 Best of Evansville winners at Rose Hill Café and Schmitt Catering can prepare them for you.

What ' s ‘ Cookin T

Teppanyaki Grill & Buffet

201 B North Green River Rd Evansville, IN 812-474-6660

he first thing you notice about Teppanyaki Grill and Buffet is its size and the vast menu at this culinary castle more than backs up its significant stature. Brothers Shuang and Li have a clear and irrevocable passion for food and serving people. Opening the new location in Evansville is not the first time the brothers have built a food fortress stone by stone. Evansville’s restaurant is one of seven in Indiana, on top of the restaurants they have sparked in four other states including Ohio, Florida, Virginia and Illinois. They enjoy keeping the restaurant’s menu fresh and unique and are constantly adding new and unique items. Upon entering Teppanyaki Grill and Buffet you are greeted with the transient sound of flowing water followed by a sensual spectrum of pleasant scents. In front of you is a sizable water garden sporting a range of mini-mountains with water cascading down them. It is reminiscent of the most serene and majestic images straight out of a fantasy novel. Your eyes are then sent off to explore the open space of the restaurant. All the open space is not intimidating; instead it provokes feelings of freedom and adventurousness. The vibe from the decor is relaxing and elegant, and neon fixtures bring an edge which averts stuffiness. All these elements combined, make you feel like you have been transported to the Eastern Hemisphere. It fosters a welcome element of excitement. The first dish presented to me was the Crab Rangoon. It is crisp, creamy and seductively savory but not too heavy. It holds a slight sweetness and a perfect balance of texture. You can pop these like candy and never stop. The crab serves as the backbone of the flavors. Next up is a colorful buffet plate. It features the Tomato Shrimp which is an amazing play with flavors. The tomato starts out savory and then a sweetness blooms on the palate.

32 | November

2012 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

Instead of over-powering the taste of the shrimp, the tomato frames it and showcases it well. Beside it is the Onion chicken which is a smoky, tender treat. The onion is certainly present but not excessive and there is a robust sweetness that punctuates the dish after swallowing. Also present, is a mild sourness that underlines and supports the dish. The third plate to arrive is Teppanyaki’s Hibachi Medley. It is an offering of every ingredient available for your choosing and prepared on their Hibachi grill. This is a sultry combination, the ultimate comfort food. The smoky, savory flavors leave you with a warm, satisfied feeling like you just had a long, genuine hug. Its contents are egg noodles, crab, mushrooms, broccoli, shrimp, eggs, zucchini, chicken, beef, green beans and onions. The last to appear is the sushi plate featuring the ‘Melting’ Roll. This roll sports the texture of warm wax and is much of what I imagine the Turkish Delights from the Chronicles of Narnia to taste like. It has nearly every major flavor profile and makes them work together perfectly. It is a sensuous experience of subtle tones fit together in a palate-pleasing puzzle. A light crunch here, a slight spice there, an earthy taste there…this roll is otherworldly. I propose it be renamed the Alpha and Omega Roll. Visit Teppanyaki Grill and Buffet to experience this carnival of cuisine for yourself!

—Nick Durcholz

Teppanyaki Grill and Buffet is located at 201 North Green River Road on Evansville’s east side.

localchefspotlight Ben Jutzi

Biaggi's 6401 East Lloyd Expy Evansville, IN 47715 (812) 421-0800

The infinite combinations and the ability to witness the instant reaction between the food and the consumer.” —Chef Ben Jutzi

C

hef Ben Jutzi comes from a family of chefs. His father owned a diner that was run with the help of Jutzi’s aunt and Ben grew up listening to the inspirations and advice of his father. Jutzi recalls his father discussing food pairings and ingredients, plating and presentation, dishes he liked to serve and what he enjoyed eating. It was that passion in his

father’s voice that left an impression on Jutzi and what lead him to the position of Chef Partner at Evansville’s Biaggi’s restaurant. Jutzi was born and raised in Evansville. However, after having worked in restaurants for a few years, the news that his wife was expecting their first child led him to pursue 18 months of formal training Sullivan University in Louisville, Ky. Louisville, considered by Jutzi to be a “great restaurant community” gave him the opportunity to experience the work of chefs such as Chef Coby Ming, formerly of Wiltshire Pantry and now Chef at Harvest Restaurant, as well as Shawn Ward of Jack Frys. It was there that Jutzi found a new outlook on cooking, farming and what it took to make it in the restaurant industry. “I think this city deserves an affluent food scene. I think the local farming community as well as the independent restaurant are under-supported. So instead of trying to convince my wife why we needed to leave, I regressed and moved back in hopes of bringing even a glimmer of that philosophy into the city. Biaggi’s is not exactly corporate and not exactly independent; however they offer the best of both worlds. We have a lot of freedom here, but at the same time there are systems designed to make us better at what we do, which is run a restaurant,” said Jutzi. In terms of Jutzi’s favorite dish at Biaggi’s he loves the Pork Chop with Blue Cheese Butter. His favorite dish to cook though, is the Veal Osso Buco. “I appreciate an ingredient that requires perseverance and patience to make it into what it deserves to be,” stated Jutzi. For the lunch crowd, Jutzi recommends the Prime Beef Sandwich with smoked Gouda, Swiss, cheddar and bacon. The sandwich also has caramelized onions on Ciabatta bread with horseradish Mayonnaise, which Jutzi describes as a “great mix of salty, spicy, creamy, sweet and smoky.” For those visiting the restaurant for dinner, Jutzi recommends the Pork Chop al Forno with blue cheese butter, roasted garlic demi-glaze and potatoes. He describes it as being pork brined and grilled to the point of being very tender. He also shares that the blue cheese butter offers a nice, sharp, creamy addition and “the rich demi-glaze with roasted garlic is candy.” When asked what he likes about his job Jutzi said, “The infinite combinations and the ability to witness the instant reaction between the food and the consumer. I am constantly inspired by an environment of other chefs, nature, music and relationships. All of these things allow me to perceive what I do in new ways. I try to surround myself with people who are equally inspired and talented. I enjoy the order amidst chaos and the anticipation at the beginning of service, and the relief at the end.” —Nikki Davis

Aurora’s Midwest

Gingerbread Contest

T

he local homeless advocacy group, Aurora, will host their second annual Midwest Gingerbread Contest on Saturday, December 1st at the Centre in downtown Evansville. This is a fundraiser unlike any other as teams compete to build majestic gingerbread houses on site in an effort to raise money and awareness for the local homeless men, women and children. Their numbers reach up to 450 on any given night. Last year’s inaugural event was a runaway success with over 1,000 visitors and 43 teams participating, and the 2012 edition looks to build on that success by taking the fundraising to another level. Donations are always welcome and greatly appreciated, but the most exciting way to get involved with this unique contest is through sponsorship. Amazing advertising opportunities are available to businesses that sponsor teams starting at $100, up to $300 or become an event sponsor starting at $1000, up to $10,000. Businesses will gain the reverent recognition of being associated with the fight to end homelessness. Depending on the level and type of sponsorship, businesses can expect to receive name exposure on shirts and inevent advertising (please visit the Aurora website for a full listing of sponsorship benefits). The more a business supports the competition, the greater the marketing opportunities. This is the very definition of a win-win situation. So, now is the time to gather up a group of friends and form a crackerjack gingerbread house building team, prepared to leave the competition in the dust of your cookie crumbs. It is also the time for local businesses to step up and support this one-of-a-kind fundraising event. —Thomas Ellis Visit www.auroraevansville.org or call 812-428-3246 for registration and information.

localtalent Walter McCarty

W

alter McCarty stepped his six foot, 10 inch frame into the prying eyes of the public not with a microphone in his hand but with a basketball.

The Evansville native first got his foot in the paint when he began playing basketball in college for the University of Kentucky Wildcats. It was here he got to be a part of “The Big Show,” as he was a member of the 1996 NCAA Championship winning team. The same year McCarty was snatched up by the New York Knicks in the 19th round of the NBA draft. A little more than a year later, McCarty was traded to the Boston Celtics where he achieved some of the best stats of his entire professional basketball career. He was a clutch player for the Celtics and a fan favorite. McCarty also played for the Phoenix Suns and the Los Angeles Clippers for a time then switched gears when he explored assistant coaching for the University of Louisville Cardinals and the Indiana Pacers. In the midst of his basketball mentality McCarty managed to release an R&B/soul album in 1998 called Moment for Love. “[The album] was written and recorded in my basement studio in Boston. I was married the year before and my first daughter was born the same year so you can imagine what was going on in my head, and the things I was writing about. I found the lady of my life while writing that CD but also had my first daughter. It was an awesome time,” said McCarty.

2012 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

It was with this album that the masses first experienced the robust and sweet notes that Walter’s pipes could produce. McCarty also had the opportunity to dabble a bit in showbiz in 2003 when he was given a role in Spike Lee’s film He Got Game. “I got to spend a lot of time with Spike Lee and all the other actors in the movie. I got to read a script with Denzel Washington, going back and forth with him and Rosario Dawson. It is an experience I will never forget,” said McCarty of his experience in the film. In 2011, McCarty started to bow out of his life on the polished hardwood and decided to focus more on his passion for music that had been present within him for a long time. “I love all types and all genres of music. It’s just always been a big part of my life. I think what drive me and what brings music out of me is just listening to other good music,” said McCarty. It was this year that he released his second album entitled Emotionally in which he returned to his soul-soothing, baby-skin smooth R&B crooning. Most recently, McCarty is proud and excited about his newest release Unbreakable. “Unbreakable is definitely an upbeat album. I definitely took it a step further; it is more of an urban/pop album. Usually I’ve always been hands-on with my music and always wanted to control what was being done, but this time I actually let [the] producers be producers and I just sung and wrote. They have really taken this album to another place. It’s me really stepping out of the box. This album has it all,” said McCarty. If you are in the mood for intimacy or dancing your face off, McCarty’s tunes, especially on his new album, will be there in a pinch. Much like he proved himself clutch on the basketball court.

soundboard Will P

I

n the age of American Idol youth and Bieber Fever ruling the music charts, most singing careers start early and often end just as quickly. So, by industry standards, local R&B vocalist Will P was virtually over-the-hill when he first hit the stage in 2004 at the ripe old age of 26. He debuted as a back-up singer for a typically pre-teen rapper named Lil’ Dyress in East St. Louis. “That was my first live performance,” recalls Will, “and when I walked out on stage the whole crowd went nuts – maybe 1000 people. I sang my first note, and it sounded like the girls just went crazy. Right then and there, I felt the love. The adrenaline, the feeling – it was euphoric. After that, I got the bug.” Following his St. Louis epiphany, Will met and collaborated with Henderson-based music producer Don Fetti off and on, recording several songs and putting together a home (made) studio. “I went out and bought a computer. I got a $25 microphone and a computer recording program for free from a friend. I just sat in my living room – I would get beats from somebody and write the melodies right there before taking them to the real studio.” While not a musician in the strictest sense of the word – he plays no instrument. Will soon discovered that he had an enviable knack for vocal hooks, from which reaped dividends when Fetti produced and released a Pimp C maxi-single in 2007, including one track featuring Will’s voice. “He released this 20,000 or 30,000 strong in Atlanta, Evansville and Kentucky. I mean, he was doing it big. My name was listed right there with Pimp C on all those copies. So, I started pushing hard, doing shows for free wherever I could. I did everything I could to get my name out there,” said Will. Will took the next obvious step and built a more professional studio, assembling a ‘dream team’ of local artists and releasing material through his own label, Quartertil Records. Everything was falling into place. Of course, the music world is littered with tales of talented people derailed by bad choices. Will P became yet another casualty, his dream of R&B stardom crushed when he was sentenced to a long stretch of house arrest following one such decision. “We all do things to try and get by, and we all have a lifestyle that we feel is our own,” Will noted somewhat cryptically. As if on cue, his computer crashed, erasing all evidence of musical existence. However, this latest setback only

strengthened Will’s resolve to get back in the game. Upon completion of his sentence last year, he began in earnest to rebuild his singing career, grow his construction business and become a more reliable, responsible family man. Will’s most convincing vocal statement to date, “Ain’t Enough Time,” should be available on iTunes by the beginning of November. Recorded with rapper and musical confidante Meserati KillaGo, it is a decidedly dark, sublime song constructed from a ghostly piano melody. It features Will moving beyond his earlier sly take on Justin Timberlake and embracing a more mature delivery reminiscent of classic R&B. Now 34, he may once again be getting a late start but Will P simply appreciates the opportunity to share his gift. “I’m hoping to achieve success in the music industry, but I don’t care if I’m a one-hit wonder. I just want to be surrounded by music.”

Christian Hip-Hop Artist

KB

News4U (N4U): Why did you choose to take the Christian route with your music as opposed to going the secular route? KB (KB): It was much less like a choice and more like what was natural. Hip-hop by definition is expression of yourself and I became a Christian at age 16. With this walk that I had with God, my change of my ties and affections - and all those things combined turned me into somebody I wasn’t before. So, when I express myself in hip-hop, it would come out a certain way. So yeah, it wasn’t like I had two pills to choose from, a blue one or a red one, but it was more of me just being who I was. N4U: Can you name me a few musicians who have directly influence your style of hip-hop? KB: Yeah sure, The Cross Movement is a group of folks who are kind of iconic/ historic in the world of Christian hip-hop. I was raised in the Midwest so my style is definitely influenced by cats like Nelly, Chingy and Murphy Lee. And then, you know, East Coast rap as a whole, the lyrical ability they had. There is no one being that I can kinda look to and say this has been the source of my inspiration. I have been shaped by a collection of talented musicians. N4U: What is your first memory KB: When I was about 9, my

Ratings are given from 1-5. “5” is the best rating a reviewer can give, meaning they were very pleased with the beer and would strongly recommend it. “1” is the lowest rating a reviewer can give, meaning they did not enjoy the beer at all.

Widmer Brother Brewing Marionberry Hibiscus Gose

Summit Brewing CO Extra Pale Ale

Blackhawk Select Stout

It has a fairly dark, orange, red pour. I had opted to be open minded in this months reviews, after a friend that has been brewing for a while bought me a handful of fresh hops and told me a lot of facts about them, he warned they could kill my dogs so to be careful. I opted not to bring them home, I would recommend the same option be chosen with this strange Widmer concoction.

Jabez Martinez • 1

This was a pinkish beer with a tangy aroma. This is about the worst beer I have ever had. It had an extreme amount of carbonation and it reminded me of some cheap champagne. I could taste the sweet fruits and some yeast but other and that it was pretty bitter. Maybe I got a bad batch but I couldn’t drink the rest of what I had. Widmer is usually a very good brewery but I think they missed it on this one.

Nick D • 3

It pours a translucent ruby hue, certainly not a common color for a beer. The scent isn’t as unique as the color but then you taste it and you are thrown into a state of shock. There is a tomato flavor with a floral tone from the added hibiscus. This one I was really pulling for because of how off-the-wall the ingredients are but it is just too much going on at one time. The aftertaste is smooth but overtly sour. This one talks a big game but sadly falls a bit short.

Nice bronzy boxer color. Good blend of flavors that blanket the hops which is very subtle not at all over powering like some craft beers. Allowing it to enhance the flavor instead of overpowering everything, this is the role I prefer from the presence of the ancient beer ingredient.

Jabez Martinez • 3.5

If you get a couple black hawks down you will find this stout has a rich, roasted malt taste. It has a very dark pour with traditional flavors of an Irish-style stout. I have had a few stouts I that you practically had to chew but this beer has a dry smooth consistency.

Jabez Martinez • 4

This is your classic amber pale ale. I could taste the malt flavors but also the toasted caramel flavor. I could also taste some citrus flavors in there but it also had some lingering hop bitterness. I would classify this one as a better-than-average pale ale.

This is a nice, dark beer with a nice, brown head. I can smell the roasted barley with a hint of chocolate. I could taste the coffee and chocolate flavors in this beer. I have never heard of the makers of this beer but they seem to know what they are doing. It had decent carbonation and is very easy to drink.

This brew pours a vibrant amber hue. The scent of hops is mild but it is has noticeable, not flat like most pale ales I’ve come across. Unfortunately the taste is not as balanced at first but a few sips in the sour bite of the hops fade and the flavor becomes less harsh. It does finish very smoothly which is uncharacteristic of extra pale ale. Not anything mind-blowing but this a solid beer.

2012 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

This beer pours almost completely black, holding it directly to a light only about 5% passes through. The scent is a combination of chocolate and coffee tones punctuated by a sharp alcohol odor. I wouldn’t call it pleasant but it’s not totally unappealing either. Upon tasting, there is a bite at the back of the throat, it fades quickly and goes down smooth. The flavor is much like the smell, a rich coffee and cocoa combination. This is a bold brew.

Boulevard 80 Acre

As the label clearly states this is a Hoppy Wheat Beer, which I found okay. It did have a cloudy golden color and it also had a sweet citrus flavor to it. I am not a big hoppy-flavor guy but I would say this would be a good beginner IPA. The hops flavor was there but it doesn’t hit you over the head with it.

Nick D • 4.5

Christy Moore • 2

I was somewhat worried when I saw the gargantuan hops pod on the label, but the bitter bite was not as strong on this beverage. In fact it was a pretty good beer even though it took a tractor to move massive hoppy cone so maybe this proves once and for all size really does matter.

The name says it all for this brew. It pours a thin, scant yellowish hue and the scent of the hops is significant but not as strong as I thought it would be. The initial taste is subtle and really refreshing. There is just the right amount of sweetness that suppresses the bitterness of the hops. Add a lemon slice and this beer would be complete. It goes down smooth and demonstrates brewing care and precision.

Random Beer Facts!

•Attila the Hun was suspected of suffocating from a bloody nose after passing out from alcohol at his ‘bachelor party’.

•The term ‘toddlers’ originated in England. There were impurities in the drinking water that disallowed the water to be used for drinking. A common alternative drink was beer (it was cheap, plentiful and the water used to make it was treated during the initial boiling during brewing). Toddlers, just weaning off of mothers milk were unaccustomed to the effects of beer. This coupled with the fact that they were just learning how to walk really made them toddle. •The first consumer protection law ever written was enacted over beer by Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria in 1516. It was a purity law limiting the ingredients of beer to barley, hops and water. •Pabst Beer is now called Pabst Blue Ribbon beer because it was the first beer to win a blue ribbon at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893. November 9 – Parmalee

Parmalee is a Country Rock band hailing from Greenville, North Carolina. The band’s name was derived from the tiny, southern town of Parmele, NC, located a couple miles from their hometown, where they started creating music together in a small barn known as Studio B. Parmalee consists of lead singer and guitarist Matt Thomas, bassist and vocalist Barry Knox (Matt and Scott Thomas’ cousin), Josh McSwain (lead guitar, vocals, and friend), and drummer Scott Thomas (Matt’s brother). All of Parmalee’s hard work, dedication and perseverance is paying off in a big way. Country fans have voted the band’s debut single, “Musta Had A Good Time,” #1 for 4 consecutive weeks on SiriusXM’s “The Highway,” and the song is edging Top 40 at country radio. The raucous party anthem has been featured in national sporting event broadcasts from the PGA to MLB. Parmalee has been highlighted in USA Today, AOL’s The Boot, Country Aircheck and has been named a “Bubbling Under Artist” by Billboard magazine. On the eve of their first major music video release for “Musta Had A Good Time,” the signs are clear that after a long, tumultuous journey to Nashville, Parmalee is home at last. November 1-11 - Armin Müsam Intervention Landscapes

From Armin Musam’s Official Website: My work focuses on the changing and changed landscape, particularly the face of nature as altered by human intervention. As I see it, technology writes or draws into a landscape just like an artist would draw on a sheet of paper - through

and with technology forms are assembled and manipulated to compose a kind of environment that suits man’s needs. My paintings attempt to visualize this paradox. They are executed like traditional landscape paintings, deliberately seducing the viewer with the “beauty” of technological architecture. These landscapes are completely and deliberately artificial, consisting of basic parts drawn from a pool of man-made elements such as dikes, tunnels, excavation holes, roads and foundation walls.

November 16th Lincoln

Dreamworks/Touchstone Directed under the eye of the legendary Steven Spielberg, Lincoln will unveil an intimate biopic on our country’s 16th president. The war drama will focus on the most trying months of Lincoln’s political career, in the thick of the Civil War. The film is based on the biography by Doris Kearns Goodwin; Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, which outlines the last four months of the president’s life. Dreamworks has announced that the movie’s plot will surround the friction between Lincoln and his cabinet, as he struggles to abolish slavery. Spielberg has expressed his deep-wound excitement for giving Lincoln new, tangible life on screen. He aimed to show Lincoln “at work,” in a light of trial and turmoil. Audiences can look forward to seeing his humanity beyond the constraints of a history book portrayal. The title role originally went to Liam Neeson but was passed over to Daniel-Day Lewis after Neeson moved on to other projects. Lewis, a master method actor and Academy Award winner, is chilling in his adaptation of Lincoln. History buff or not, one can imagine that experiencing his performance on the big screen will be riveting for viewers of all kinds. Sally Field was chosen five years ago to play the role of Mary Todd Lincoln, she was quoted saying, “To have the opportunity to work with Steven Spielberg and Daniel Day-Lewis and to play one of the most complicated and colorful women in American history is simply as good as it gets.” Other cast members include James Spader, Tommy Lee Jones, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

November 23rd Hitchcock

Fox Searchlight Sight and sounds of the horror classic Psycho will haunt the silver screen once again, this time with the camera zoomed in on Alfred Hitchcock and his wife Alma in the upcoming Hitchcock. The film will cover Alfred’s obsession with finding a subject for his next film, his inspiration from the real-life killer from Wisconsin, Ed Gein and the making and release of the famed thriller. Beneath the weight of studio wars and production madness, Alfred and Alma attempt to hold their relationship together. Alma, played by the intoxicating Helen Mirren, struggles to hold on to her own identity under the shadow of her headline-grabbing husband. The title role is given more strength thanks to the addition of Anthony Hopkins as the mysterious and often brutal Alfred Hitchcock. The screenplay has undergone multiple rewrites, including input from Black Swan co-writer John J. McLaughlin. Danny Elfman sets the film’s score, composing a Psycho-inspired film for the second time since his recordings for the 1998 Gus Van Sant remake. Scarlett Johansson will take on the role of Janet Leigh, the seductive blonde who finds herself at the Bates Motel and gets famously knifed in the shower. Other cast members to embody Psycho’s 1950’s air includes Jessica Biel as Oklahoma-born actress Vera Miles, Michael Wincott as the killer Ed Gein, Toni Collette as Peggy Robertson and James D’Arcy as Anthony Perkins.

Prometheus 20th Century Fox Standing on the shoulders of the original 1979 Alien film, the 124 minutes set aside for this story attempts to introduce us to our “maker.” Whether or not this tale is worth spending twice as long as you would in church on Sunday depends on how big of a fan of the original film(s) you are. In the beginning, we find ourselves in the familiar setting of deep-space with a cryogenically frozen crew as we land on a planet, far, far away from our own. As the crew comes to, Dr. Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) believes that she has finally found the “engineers” of the human race, and is anxious to take full advantage of meeting them face-to-face. The mysterious David (Michael Fassbender) is a remarkable android, more interesting than the rest of the crew and is programmed for a very different agenda. Meredith Vickers (Charlize Theron) at first seems to be an integral part of the story, but never seems to amass any value, unless she does in the sequel perhaps? Tell me if you’ve heard this one: When the crew learns that they are not alone on this planet, things finally get interesting. The direction was good and the performances were solid. I’m actually now a big fan of Noomi Rapace who was the body of the film. I can see her becoming a sci-fi icon like Sigourney Weaver. It’s really too bad that when the film finally gripped me, other than the normal horror fare, it was about 60 seconds from the ending. They should have started this movie at its end. Cheers to a potentially thrilling and meaningful sequel!

Red Lights Versus Entertainment Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy), a seemingly misplaced assistant, searches for something he doesn’t believe in at first. He teams up with mentor psychologist, Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) as she toils at the end of a 30-year career, debunking any and all paranormal activities that come her way. Simon Silver (Robert De Niro) plays a dangerous psychic who comes out of retirement. The non-believer Margaret warns Tom to keep his distance from Silver. Tom instead becomes obsessed with him for reasons unknown at first, but then risks everything to uncover the truth about his abilities. Tom’s first attempt to defraud Silver goes terribly wrong. He ignores an internal struggle and focuses all of his energy on disproving Silver, believing he is the cause. Meanwhile, Silver exits the stage to debunk the debunkers and arranges for a scientific study to prove his powers are real. The two of them go toe-to-toe while the scientific community and the world’s perception are on the brink of a new, absolute truth: psychic powers are as real as the air we breathe. Down but not out, Tom knows this now, but not in the way we expect. The setup is thrilling and performances are solid, but the back of the Blu-Ray case should read “mind-blowing confusion” instead of “conclusion.” The real twist is that 110 tasty minutes of psychological treats are ruined in the last three minutes with paranormal tricks. Unfair storytelling delivers the last blow, as we’re beaten into submission by the writer/director and his brutal, overly-complex ending to this potentially visionary tale.

WSM

About the Band: WSM is a hip-hop group based out of Evansville, pronounced “Dub-S-M” an acronym for Wikid Style Music. Our group consists of three emcees (J.J., Indy Evans, and Roc). We have two official albums. Both albums can be found on iTunes, Amazon and most online music sites. They are titled From Day One and Second Coming. We just released Second Coming in September. Check out our video for the song called “Once Again” on Youtube! What they cover: Our music is 100% original. We each write our own lyrics to original beats (produced mostly by J.J.). We each bring something unique to every song with our different angles, yet work really well together. Our styles have a Midwest glue, but we are each original and something different than anyone out right now. One thing we strive for is the importance of being diverse to capture more than one particular audience. Their influences: That’s a hard question to pin down. From the beginning to some current hip hop, we’ve been influenced by many great artists. We can say though, that the Midwest chopper styles of Tech Nine, Twista, Do Or Die and Bone, clearly introduced a love for rapid fire style. Our low income neighborhood early on played a big role as well, since hip-hop went viral and became a good outlet for most kids around that time. Where you can catch their performances: The Jungle has been a premier spot, but we’ve also performed at many of the venues in Evansville. We continue to perform at new places. The best way to catch our next performance is to check News 4U entertainment and like our Facebook page for info. We’re also on Reverbnation.com and Myspace.

cd reviews Julie Kathryn broken love [ep] Self-released 4 stars

“I always had two things, playing music and helping people through social advocacy, but I wasn’t sure what path to take,” said Julie Kathryn when discussing her journey from agency to stage. Ultimately, she chose to pursue music full-time. Her latest release, the four song broken love [ep], proves unequivocally that the right choice was made – at least for the benefit of Americana music lovers everywhere. Kathryn’s sound is a hazy, woozy, slow burn with a touch of twang and alt-country brought to life through an assortment of natural instruments. While the opening two tracks, “Don’t Want You Back” and “Not the Same,” smolder with quiet restraint, the final two tracks exploit that vibe with even greater success, recalling the genius of Mazzy Star. “Broken Love” slinks in on a riff so spidery and watery, weaving the tale of a complicated relationship - ‘spring is coming / the witch is dead / my first love’s unfolding, unfolding.’ The EP ends with the elegantly understated “Let This Be” which finds Kathryn in supreme voice, somehow both atmospheric and immediate, backed by sleepy violin and cello. Judging by the quality of songwriting contained on this release, Julie Kathryn may never need a day job again.

Visceral Throne Omnipotent Asperity Brutal Bands 4 stars

Like a funhouse hall of mirrors that distorts your reflection a hundred times over until reality slips through the cracks in your sanity, Visceral Throne blurs the line between life and death with an unforgiving attack. It is both euphoric and disheartening. ‘These humans think they are gods - Building towards my eternal dominion - Never, will they reach me - I shall strike and divide them all - It is my creation and I will do as I will,’ threatens lead vocalist Dylan Cox in the album’s title track. I tend to believe him and suggest you do the same. Asperity refers to suffering or severity and indeed, these local death metal deviants bring the pain. Lead by multi-instrumentalist and lyricist Andrew Sutton, Visceral Throne pushes and pulls, their intricate rhythms losing speed for the briefest of moments before diving headlong once again into a rapid free fall. It is a feeling reflected in harrowing lines like ‘Silence now floods your ears – An Epitaph for all man Breeding – A Spiraled Diseased Race – Destined for the grave,’ from the track “Epitaph.” With suffocating production and haunting cover art, Omnipotent Asperity lives up to its name.

Session Americana Love & Dirt Self-released 4 stars

Session Americana’s raw, spontaneous feel is created with most any beaten and weathered instruments at their disposal: a vintage suitcase, collapsible bar table wired with microphones, mandocello and a prewar parlor guitar. Somehow, this collective of gifted musicians wrings cohesion from chaos but still retains an experimental side, however subtle. Produced by Paul Q. Kolderie (Radiohead, Morphine, Throwing Muses), Love & Dirt indeed reflects the Americana referenced in the band’s name, but also vacillates from the pseudo-pop of the opening track “Down to You,” to the Burt Bacharach era inspired melody of the closing track “So Far From Your Door.” In between, there are elements of Wilco, The Eagles, John Doe and even a brief foray into Radiohead atmospherics. Despite the seemingly disparate moods, the album holds together beautifully. In keeping with the collective mindset, several members take a turn in front of the microphone, switching back and forth from song to song like mc’s, an approach that keeps the listener off-kilter but invested. There’s not a false step taken throughout, and the highlight comes midway with the droning, minute long “Intro” leading into “Easier,” a harmonica-driven, echo-laden lament, plucked out on a lonely piano while the vocal harmonies build and reach an assuring crescendo. Entirely affecting.

miggs

15th & Hope Elm City Music 3 stars

Hitless Wonder, an excellent book released this year by Joe Oestreich, bass player and singer for Watershed (the little band that never quite could out of Columbus, OH), describes his group’s 20 year struggle to achieve something beyond mid-level success. They are armed with arguably more heart than talent. One day miggs might well be telling the same tale. The stars seemingly aligned for the band’s fifth album as Phil Ramone, producer of Billy Joel’s most successful period, signed on to engineer a ‘better miggs record.’ But the promise of this collaboration is not heard anywhere on 15th & Hope. Much like Watershed, miggs plays music from the Heartland without a signature voice or unique musical vision. Influences such as Tom Petty, Bryan Adams, The Romantics, Steve Miller, even Watershed - all are in evidence. But it sounds as though the band has simply pieced together familiar riffs and wordplay without pushing to discover something more. And yet, miggs’ most glaring weakness might in some strange way be its greatest strength. Songs such as “Home,” “Fairy Tales & Miracles” and “Stars,” while non-descript, are radio-ready and universal, perfect for inclusion on a movie or television soundtrack. Maybe there’s hope after all. —Thomas Ellis

Dan Deacon

America Domino Records

Electronic maestro Dan Deacon combines the beautifully light with the despairingly lost in his recent album, America. After touring the country and far regions of the world, this record became a canvas for an awakening of the self. As a formal composer and estranged musician, Deacon’s themes of wanderlust and realization, investigating both the outward and the inward, are captured with a thunder through his masterfully composed pieces.

Cat Power

Sun Matador Records

Sun lifts Cat Power’s Chan Marshall into a fresh, poppy atmosphere, never before explored in her work of the last two decades. Chan’s usual, stripped-down-bluesy groans are now accompanied by drum machines, synthesizers and sound effects. Even with the seemingly drastic change, Chan’s sincerity in her work is carried into this album so passionately that the album doesn’t bring a “new sound,” but an exploration that listeners can join in on with the same Cat Power of years ago.

Flying Lotus

Until the Quiet Comes Warp Records

Flying Lotus is a gigantic, sitting machine, with tubes pulling from the pools of a dizzying number of genres. Jazz, electronic, hip-hop, kraut-rock and experimental influences are all present. But the machine itself is fueled by dreams and plays both homage and narrator to the subconscious. It is a world known by the artist, to grow in mystery the further it is explored. This record plays with space, freedom, jazz and inward venturing in its most chilled out form.

VIDEO GAMES

Dishonored

T

hey have tackled bountiful, fantasy worlds ridden with mythical creatures in Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, post-apocalyptic Las Vegas with the latest installment of the Fallout series and now Bethesda Softworks unveils a surreal cityscape, scarred by industry and disease but rife with stark beauty. That game is Dishonored and it is Bethesda’s latest first-person, action adventure title sketched in a steam-punk style that is sleek and precise at times, but disheveled and savage at others. In this marvelously macabre world, the player inhabits the silent shoes of protector/assassin Corvo Attano right before he is framed for the murder of the empress of a royal family it was his very job to protect. After Corvo manages to escape the soldiers he has walked and worked alongside for years, he is lead by a set of mysterious set of clues that lead him to a revolutionary faction willing to help him avenge the death of his empress in exchange for his grisly but calculated services. He agrees, and then Corvo’s grueling journey truly begins. Each and every aspect of this game is rich and in-depth. The art direction, the character’s quirks and history, the plot, the weapons and armor and even the controls all come together and intertwine to weave a tapestry of gaming brilliance. This may sound a bit inflated, but this game truly has a lot to offer. A multi-tiered system for upgrading abilities and weapons, moving sub-plots, puzzle-solving, strategy, edgeof-your-seat action, hunting for hidden items and areas and did I mention graceful decapitation? On the downside, Dishonored is so multi-faceted that I feel it really takes away from the accessibility of the game. A few times I found myself running around in circles aimlessly because there were so many things to do. I had a hard time focusing on just one. The melee combat system takes a bit to get used to but when you do, it is pure, ghastly glory. Dishonored takes a devotion usually seen in moderate to extreme gamers but if you tough it out, this game will provide you with one of the most immersive experiences you have ever had with controller in hand. —Mr. Farthington

This game is rated ‘M’ for Mature due to Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Sexual Themes and Strong Language. Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • November 2012
