THE WINGS OF SPRING >> Readers, advertisers and friends of all sorts, April provides the ideal soundtrack to the alleviation and soothing of the scars left by the unusually heavy hand of old man winter this year. The scope of April’s tunes gives a little something for everyone to grove to. For all you youth of the 90’s out there, Smash Mouth rolls into the Ford Center with their infectious brand of scratchy-voiced beachy, poppy ska-punk to get you walking on the sun. Rescheduled from November, Lady Antebellum woos the Ford Center making country boys’ and girls’ hearts rise and fall. Here Come the Mummies strut on down to the Victory Theatre resurrecting the wind-blistered, cold-blooded masses with pure passionately-suggestive funk that is full of fun. Don’t let their ancient facades fool you, their funk is the freshest! Also, bringing to the table a style of music not quite as old as the mummies themselves, but just as entrancing and impressive, is the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra with two performances: “Gershwin & Friends” and “Mahler’s Ressurection.” Then, to top it all off comes the RAIN: A Tribute to the Beatles to the Old National Events Plaza making all the flower children bloom! Aside from the music, April is a month when the communities of the tri-state come alive with events raising money for those in need. Who doesn’t want to watch a firefighter and a cop duke it out? Guns & Hoses 7 goes down at the Ford Center this month and it is

quite the attention-grabber, but there are so many more great events for fantastic causes this month: The Evansville Kidney Walk, Shoe Carnival Shoe Shuffle 5K Run/ Walk, 10K Spring Into Fitness, Youth First “Passport to Adventure” Benefit Auction, ISAF’s Walk for Autism and many more. On the home front, April marks the revamp of something old and the introduction of something new. New is the “Best of Wings” guide. It is all you need to find the wings fit specifically to your taste buds. Or, if you have already found the wings of your dreams, check it out to see how they pleased our palates. Finally, returning with a new focus is the trusty Bar Guide with a few bests of its own. You will find all of this and much more inside!

Happy Earth Day!

Guns & Hoses VII by Thomas Ellis

Evansville Police Department (EPD) Detective/School Resources Officer Patrick Phernetton is on a mission.

T

he driving force behind the local charity boxing event Guns & Hoses, he is laser-focused on making the upcoming seventh edition the most successful yet. And he is taking another major step towards his ultimate goal: building a group home in the community for children afflicted with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS). Phernetton’s daughter, Mykenna (“Mickey”) is one of the more than 400,000 individuals around the world living with this rare genetic disorder. The disease creates a sense of constant hunger and if left unattended, sufferers of PWS will literally eat themselves to death. Each year since its inception, Guns & Hoses has raised thousands of dollars for the cause, not to mention the up-keep of Kids Kingdom Playground and countless other charities for children with disabilities.

Phernetton spoke with News4U about the April 12th event that pits local police departments

against local fire departments in a battle royal inside the ring. News4U (N4U): How did the idea for Guns & Hoses initially come about? Patrick Phernetton (PP): Well, they say the best ideas are stolen (laughs). I used to work in St. Louis, and they have been staging a similar event there for many years. It’s extremely popular and has raised a ton of money. N4U: What makes this event such a success? PP: Well, it’s part rock concert, part boxing matches. We really try to emphasize the entertainment value. People always love our openings – they’re always flashy and patriotic. And this year, there will be a pretty moving video by the late Officer Nathan Schreor that we are going to play in his honor. As for the matches, there will be about 15. Thankfully, we always have plenty of volunteers, so I don’t have to fight (laughs)! The crowd really gets into the action and loves seeing the two departments clash. N4U: What’s the relationship like between the EPD and the EFD? PP: This event has done wonders for the relationship. There will always be a natural rivalry between the two departments – it’s just built in. But since Guns & Hoses, we now have a common

cause. You’ll see at the event – after each fight, the boxers will hug and hold each others’ hands in the air. When we’re out in the community serving the public, we have a lot to talk about with each other now because of this charity. N4U: How close are you to realizing your dream of building an area group home for PWS children? PP: Based on the money raised from Guns & Hoses, we’re about four or five years away from the goal. There are only a handful of homes around the country, and I have no doubt that once we open it, we will receive requests from all over. So, my hope is that we keep raising money and building more homes as time goes on. N4U: Who are the people that have helped make this event a reality? PP: My fellow 911 Gives Hope board members have been invaluable: Billy Bolin, Chris Reiter, Matt Garnett, Dave Weis, Sallie Jung and Darin Harmon. And I can’t sing the praises of EFD Inspector Mike Doran enough. I do this because my daughter has a disease, but these guys do it because that’s the kind of people they are – just good citizens.

Every single penny raised goes to charity, so come cheer (and boo) the blue and the red at the seventh annual Guns & Hoses on April 12th. The beat-downs begin at 7 p.m. Visit thefordcenter.com or 911giveshope.com for more information.

An Earth Day to Remember It was the Earth Day, 1990, and I was handing out tree saplings on the lawn of the Methodist Church with the Student Council of the Brown County Junior High. For a thirteen-year-old, an entire day of dipping newspaper wrapped saplings into freezing cold buckets of water equals: champion of saving the environment one redbud at a time! Perhaps the true champion of the day was the genius who rolled a big TV/VCR cart out on the lawn and run extension cords so all could watch a pre-recorded loop of Bette Midler as “Mother Nature” preach about “Reduce-Reuse- Recycle” and how we must “teach the children.” I can still see her in her fake moss covered get up. While the delivery was cheesy, I remember her message—Earth is our home and we should try our best to be good stewards. Now, I’m not taking on any hypothesis or passionate debates on human impact to our planet. Nope, just the fact that no side of any argument can deny –we live on Planet Earth. It is the home we share. Does anyone like a trashy home? Of course not! There seems to be more options than ever to be good “housekeepers.” I hope you will consider your role in our collective housekeeping this spring season. Earth Day is in April, and while I can’t say my participation has ever matched the 7-hours of tree sapling distribution, I am going to do “Mother Nature Bette” proud this year and teach the children. My family and I will be at Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden for the “Party for the Planet” on April 26th (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) Leading by example is a proven winner. So, we are going to take a few hours to enjoy natural beauty and learn how we can help with the “housekeeping.” I hope you’ll join us. —Abigail Adler, Marketing Director of Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden

“ TA K E M E D OW N TOW N TO U R 2 014 ” by Thomas Ellis

AT THE FORD CENTER

The wait is finally over. After postponing the first leg of the “Take Me Downtown Tour” last November to accommodate the deluxe re-issue of Golden, Lady Antebellum is back and ready to own the night at the Ford Center on April 10.

D

espite the delay, enthusiasm for the show has only grown, and a full house is expected to welcome Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood to Evansville’s biggest stage. The trio is no stranger to stadiums, of course. With a string of hits that began with “Love Don’t Live Here” in 2008, Lady Antebellum has been on a massive roll, ascending to the very top of country music while also achieving crossover success on the pop charts. It’s been six incredible years with no let-up. Now, after a brief respite, the band is intent on making 2014 the biggest year yet. Lady Antebellum formed in Nashville in 2006, and the trio quickly made its mark on the local music scene. Just one year later, Capitol Records Nashville signed the group. It was sweet revenge for Scott, who was reportedly rejected twice by American Idol. But the daughter of country music singer Linda Davis had the last laugh when Lady Antebellum’s self-titled debut went straight to number one, a singular achievement for a new country group. And yet, it was only the beginning.

10 | April 2014

Following the success of the debut album and an opening slot on country star Martina McBride’s 2008 tour, the trio released the song that would change everything: “Need You Now.” The title track to Lady Antebellum’s sophomore album not only scaled the heights of the country charts but also reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100; its mass appeal made stars out of Scott, Kelley and Haywood and helped send 2010’s Need You Now to the top of both album charts. Two more huge singles from the album, “American Honey” and “Our Kind of Love,” tightened the trio’s stranglehold on the music industry.

Fittingly, awards came fast and furious, including Grammys for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Just a year later, Lady Antebellum was back with Own the Night which, like its predecessor, topped both the country and Billboard album charts. It featured three top ten singles, including the number one country hits, “Just a Kiss” and “We Owned the Night.” 2011 proved to be another monster year for the trio, capped off by a Grammy Award for Best Country Album. The tour for Own the Night kept Lady Antebellum on the road for the better part of 2012, but once home, Scott, Kelley and Haywood were eager to record a follow-up. “Downtown,” the first single single, was released ahead of the album and went top ten. When Golden appeared in May of 2013, it marked the third consecutive time that the trio reached number one on both the country and Billboard album charts. Six months later, a deluxe edition of Golden featuring the single “Compass” was released. With its folk/pop sound, the song signaled a change in musical direction that both attracted new fans and delighted the old. 2014 should be big, indeed. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Special guests include Kip Moore and Kasey Musgraves. For ticket information, visit thefordcenter.com.

ER CENT D R E FO AT TH by Thomas Ellis

For the superstars of the WWE, it’s time to put up or shut up. Judgment day has arrived.

O

n April 27, John Cena, Bray Wyatt, Daniel Bryan, Kane, Titus O’Neil and many more of the world’s best professional wrestlers will face-off at the Ford Center to settle old scores and create new rivalries. Expect tempers to flare and bodies to fly as they battle and trade barbs with trash-talking fans.

A towering target of abuse, O’Neil kindly spoke with News4U about the evolution of professional wrestling and his journey from Arena Football League player to WWE villain. News4U (N4U): I grew up watching old school wrestling stars like Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes and Andre the Giant. What’s your take on the difference between that era and WWE 2014? Titus O’Neil (TO): It’s completely different. We have a larger platform now. We’re being aired in over 120 countries weekly in over 35 different languages. The level of the athletes on the roster now is completely different than it was back in the day. Those guys were grown men who worked through so much. That’s not to say that we don’t have any grown men now, but the entertainment value and opportunities and platforms that we have now are ridiculous compared to how it used to be. Those guys would have been twice if not four or five times the megastars they were then if they were in this era. And now with the WWE Network, we’re doing something that no one else has ever done – it’s over the top. This company is all about being new and innovative.

12 | April 2014

N4U: You played both college and professional football. Was pro wrestling a natural progression? TO: A good friend of mine suggested that I try out after my AFL career ended, but what I really wanted to do was coach. And that’s exactly what I was on my way to doing. But then one day I was driving in south Tampa and saw the NXT facility – back then it was FCW. I stopped and walked in the back door and said that I wanted to talk to somebody about being a wrestler. Two weeks later, I was training to be a WWE superstar. N4U: What’s the key to being a great villain – or a “heel” as it’s called? TO: Fortunately, for me, what I’m doing on television is really just an extension of myself. As far as being a heel is concerned, I try to just do things that, for example, former teammates have done that I didn’t like. Nobody wants to be told to shut up or be told that someone is smarter than them. I just try to take all

these things that are real and flip them in to the mode of being a jerk. I do have two degrees, so I also try to use the fact that people always told me I’d never go to college and succeed, never play college football, as fuel. All that stuff is real. N4U: What can your fans – and many haters – expect from you at the Ford Center? TO: I’m probably going to be kicking Baron’s ass again. I just can’t seem to get rid of him – he keeps coming back for more. But it is WrestleMania season, so things can always change. He may find a different target between now and then, and I may find one, too. But I do know that if he doesn’t find one and keeps barking up this tree, there’s going to be some problems for him come April 27th. WWE Live! starts at 5 p.m. Doors open at 4 p.m. For ticket information, visit thefordcenter.com. WrestleMania XXX is scheduled for April 6 in New Orleans. Visit wwe.com for information.

Q&A

& Love and Theft

at the Ford Center by Nick Durcholz

From sleek, bright pop to crunchy, raspy ska, Smash Mouth holds a multitude of sonic cards from their 20 year career to play at any point that are guaranteed get you moving.

F

lanked by country duo Love & Theft, both will fill the Ford Center in downtown Evansville with a palpable multi-genre energy on April 11 in conjunction with the University of Evansville and the University of Southern Indiana. Hailing from the Golden State, Smash Mouth has accumulated a number of hits over the years, some original and some covers including: “Walkin’ on the Sun,” “All Star” and “I’m a Believer.” Their debut album Fush Yu Mang (1997) is primarily punk/ska, but switch to their latest album Magic (2012) and they transform into a refined pop rock machine before one’s very ears.

Two of Smash Mouth’s original members, front man Steve Harwell and bassist Paul De Lisle, took a moment from the road to speak with News4U . • www.evansvillemediagroup.com 26 | April 2014

News4U (N4U): 20 years down the road and you guys are still jamming, how does it feel? Paul De Lisle (PDL): I can honestly say it feels the same as it did 20 years ago, because Steve and I literally have not stopped. It would feel weird not doing it.

N4U: How did your experience with F.O.S. (rap) evolve into starting Smash Mouth (rock)? Steve Harwell (SH): After starting FOS, it gave me a good taste of the music business and really helped me see the things that I didn’t want. It was a great experience but the rap thing just wasn’t what I wanted to do long term. I knew it would be hard to change styles but I also knew that I could do it, and would be much happier. N4U: Can you describe the process of how you brought the island or “beachy” sound to the band? PDL: Greg and I were skateboarders and surfers from California. We both possessed an inherent understanding of the culture and its history. To us, Dick Dale was more important than Eddie Van Halen. N4U: What made you gravitate towards the bass guitar? PDL: Aesthetic. At 12-yearsold, a Fender Precision was simply the coolest-looking thing I’d ever seen. For me, an electric bass guitar had the same sleek-appeal as a Corvette or a surfboard.

N4U: How did you get into singing? SH: When I was a kid I was a huge Elvis fan (still am). I would watch him on TV and sing along. I knew then, that I wanted to be a singer and a performer. N4U: Which Smash Mouth song do you think holds the title of “Tastiest Bass Line?” PDL: Its gotta be “Walkin’ on the Sun.” It’s the cornerstone of the song. And, it’s so greasy it’s almost obscene. That bass line is high in cholesterol. N4U: Can you describe the feeling you get while playing live to a really receptive and energetic crowd? SH: It’s truly indescribable. Simply the greatest feeling a performer can experience. PDL: Grateful… And a tiny bit drunk. Tickets for Smash Mouth & Love and Theft are available at all Ticketmaster outlets including thefordcenter.com, the Ford Center Box Office or charge by phone at 1-800-745-3000. Ticket prices subject to change. The show begins at 8 p.m.

2 Annual Earth Day nd

trashion show at Studio 421

by Sarah Dyson

If you’re looking for a fun, eco-friendly way to spend time with your family as spring makes its appearance, then come to the Trashion Show on April 19 at 2 p.m. at Studio 421 located at 421 North Main Street in Henderson, Ky.

s

tarted just last year, Lornal Littrel and her team work hard to not only promote art and fashion, but also to raise awareness about the importance of recycling for all ages. Plus, this creative fashion show is held outdoors, and with the coming warm weather, it is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the shedding of our winter coats and welcome the spring time - especially since we’ve all been practically frozen for all of winter. Also, lawn chairs are acceptable to bring for this event, so you and your loved ones can watch the show as comfortably as possible. As for the actual materials that are used to create these wonderful pieces of art, they vary from things such as high-end fashion magazines to trash bags/ grocery bags and almost

everything else that your imagination can think of. In fact, practically anything that can be made into something new in a creative way is welcome at the Trashion Show with open arms! And, to make this already amazing deal even sweeter, admission is free. That is right, admission for this event is free due to it being for awareness only, and this may just be me, but I can not just pass up free events! So, if your looking to go to an event where creativity and imagination are highly encouraged, or even just want to get out of the house after being cooped up in it for so long, then come to the Trashion show where recycling and fashion come together to create a very unique form of art.

The Evansville Philharmonic present:

“Gershwin & Friends” & “Mahler’s Resurrection” by Jaimie Humbert

From Broadway numbers to symphonic tradition, the Evansville Philharmonic’s April finale comes in like a lion and goes out with the lamb.

T

he influence of the roaring twenties and the sounds of old Hollywood clash in the Philharmonic’s production of “Gershwin and Friends,” featuring pianist Richard Glazier, who promises a night of storytelling and memories. Gershwin’s overtures will be seamlessly blended to create a “flow that the audience will enjoy.” After Holy Week, the Philharmonic is joined by choral talents from USI with an emotional ending to Easter in the form of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection.” “Gershwin and Friends” pays homage to the songs of George and Ira Gershwin and popular artists who were inspired by their music, including Johnny Green and Hugh Martin, on Saturday, April 5 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 6 at 2 p.m. at the Victory. From Tin Pan Alley to Fred Astaire musicals, the Gershwin tribute is narrated by Indiana native Richard Glazier, who tickles the ivories alongside the symphony orchestra. For Glazier, it is “without question,” returning to Indiana to perform is a special treat.

Building to the exciting climax of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, a composition that marks the first time a musical arrangement was created for both piano and orchestra; Glazier acclaims Rhapsody in Blue as the “voice of America.” Inspirited by the ideals of immigration and dreams, the song speaks to “the melting pot, [the people who] came to America for a better life. It represents the American culture that we all share.” Glazier, who worked with Maestro Savia in the late 1990s, narrates the evening with historical backstory and “my experiences with the composers.” When he was only twelve years old, Glazier met his musical idol, Ira Gershwin. Ira prompted young Glazier to play a Gershwin melody on the very piano that once belonged to George Gershwin, a “life-defining moment” which forever ignited Glazier’s dedication to the Gershwin repertoire and the American Popular Songbook. To Glazier, a passion for all things Gershwin became “something you devote your life to.” The night with “Gershwin and Friends” features Glazier’s introductions to the musical selections, film clips and personal stories. As a classically trained pianist, some of Glazier’s memorable production pieces include “Embraceable You,” “The Man I Love” and “Man That Got Away.” The Philharmonic’s production marks the premiere of Glazier’s staging of “Meet Me in St. Louis” and “Body and Soul,” melodies for piano and orchestra written specifically for him. At the end of Easter week, on Saturday, April 26 at 7 p.m., the Evansville Philharmonic presents Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony, accompanied by the USI Chamber Choir, the USI Women’s Choir and solo vocalists Susan Platts and Martha Guth. The Second Symphony captures Gustav Mahler’s life-long view of the splendor of resurrection and the afterlife. A classics concert paired with the remembrance of Easter promises to blossom and renew hope. The final movement, after delving into the doubts and questions of our existence, ends with a heartfelt belief in everlasting, transcendent renewal. Joining the springtime celebration of “Resurrection” are the Evansville Philharmonic Chorus and the University of Southern Indiana’s Chamber and Women’s Choruses. Led by Daniel Craig, Director of Musical Activities at USI, Craig also serves as Director of Music at Old North United Methodist Church in Evansville. Guest vocalists Platts and Guth supply a greater depth to Mahler’s symphony. Mezzo-soprano Platts is esteemed for her performances of Mahler’s works. Her recognitions include her recent London and Berlin debuts in John Adams’ Nixon in China. Tickets are available through the box office by calling (812) 425-5050 or online at evansvillephilharmonic.org.

Azzip Pizza is not just your usual little pizza joint. These guys have taken the old school pie and given it new style, making your experience: Personal, fast, fresh, & delicious. Azzip welcomes you with a clean, modern setting and a sparkling kitchen, ready to serve you up the pizza you want in “a zip.” I indulged in what I called a sausage grinder pizza. A crispy crust with a soft chew, both sauces, cheese, sausage, pepperoni, spicy giardiniera mix and a little garlic…Grab a ½ and ½ if you’re in the salad mood, fresh baked pie built by you, but only on one half, with a fresh tossed salad topping the other half once pulled from the oven. What a great concept Azzip brings to Evansville. Quick, FRESH, tasty, affordable, personal...Well done, and in A Zip!

The Sports Book Bar & Grill @ Tropicana Evansville 701 NW Riverside Dr. Evansville, IN 47708 (812) 401-0309

The Sports Book Bar & Grill at Tropicana has got something for everyone: plenty of TV’s, plenty of seating for the family or friends, stocked bar and a solid “bar food” menu. Bring on a Turkey Club Wrap and a massive Buffalo Fried Chicken Sandwich. The Club is a fresh spin on a classic, wrapped up and topped with melted cheddar and is more than enough for one. The Buffalo Chicken Sandwich is two full breasts, fried and spun in house-made sauce, topped with crumbled bleu cheese, shaved carrots and celery. Let’s talk dessert. I had one, and only one Ghost Chili Chicken Wing, the star of the Wing Challenge. If you like heat, you found your new hot spot. Whether it’s for the game, the goods or the pain, The Sports Book at Tropicana is a downtown staple.

cooking Spotlight Easter Treats by

Mike Libs & the Chocolate Factory It all started with Libs Candies, Inc. created by Bob and John Libs in 1950. After WWII, Bob learned the business of candy making out in a store in Eureka, CA. It was there that he dreamed of starting his own candy business. John, who was a half a continent away, had a similar notion. So, when John and his wife Loraine visited Bob during the summer of 1950, Bob taught John the art of making candy. The two brothers then launched their new business on Main Street in Evansville on Thanksgiving Day in 1950. In the years that followed, they owned three shops and supplied 75 resellers. In 2002, that business closed, and Mike carried on the family name by starting a new candy business that was located in Pat Coslett’s furniture store. The idea was that the candy store would appeal to the same demographic as those shopping for furniture, so space was allotted right in the middle of the store. It was there that Mike Libs & the Chocolate Factory was created, and during the first year, the business specialized in their world renowned Pecan Flips. Mike shares, “We started off making Pecan Flips. People would wait up to an hour and a half for a box.” Three years later, Mike relocated the business to Green River Road in front of Lawndale Shopping Center, where it still resides today. They now offer over 250 kinds of candies, and almost all candy creation is done in-house. Mike estimates that 90% of their business is in chocolate, but they also specialize in a wide variety of cream candies and nutty candies such as Pecan Rolls and Heavenly Hash Bars. This Easter, the store will be offering Easter candies ranging from Easter chocolate eggs to solid bunnies (2.5-24 oz.), as well as selling baskets and other items ranging in price from $3-$100+. Two weeks after Easter, they will also be celebrating their annual Chocolate Covered Strawberry Festival on the weekend before Mother’s Day.

According to Libs, what sets them apart from other businesses is the “way they make things. We are not a mass manufacturer. Most all of our candy is handmade, and our recipes go back generations. Everything is tried and true. Additionally, what sets us apart is the combinations of chocolates and fillings that we use. We look to combine different elements so that the flavors complement each other.” What motivates him to stay in business is that it’s a “family business and avocation for [him].” He also enjoys pursuing this career as a way to carry on the family name. Libs’ favorite thing about the business is the positive attitude of all of his customers. According to Libs, the act of purchasing candy for yourself or to give as a gift “creates an aura of positivity. We’re all kids in a candy store, so act like one!” —Nikki Davis For more information, please call (812) 424-8750 or visit them online at www.libschoclates.com.

T

o walk into Mike Libs and the Chocolate Factory is one of this candy lover’s most memorable experiences. Having become accustomed to big chain box stores’ manufactured candy, the change of pace of locally-made sweets was a breath of fresh air.

What’ ' s ‘ Cookin’

Anthony's Heavenly Cheesecake & Cafe

I

t seems like every two months or so, rumors begin to re-circulate that Evansville is destined to get our very own, the holy grail of chains: The Cheesecake Factory. Well, my friends, Evansville being gifted this culinary treasure would be a moot occurrence. Why? Because we have Anthony’s Heavenly Cheesecake & Cafe… Anthony’s boasts twice the number of homemade cheesecake varieties to choose from as the Factory and doubles as a tasty, fresh and affordable lunch and breakfast destination. Stop by for dessert with a special someone to enjoy one of Anthony’s four inch “couple’s” cheesecakes or drop-in for a quick lunch and a slice of personal indulgence. Two other strong suits, that are nearly instantaneously noticeable, are Anthony’s (and the staff’s) friendliness and Anthony’s affinity for ingenuity and creativity. “I saw that there was a niche for homemade cheesecake – not frozen – offering many different varieties. I’m always doing something new,” said Anthony Christian, Co-Owner of Anthony’s Heavenly Cheesecake. A glance at the menu sheds light on Christian’s creativity - some may even say bravery. They even have several different kinds of “Savory” cheesecakes. The line-up includes: Jalapeno, Greek, Asian Chicken, Pepperoni, Veggie Trio and many more. They don’t sound like the most appetizing flavors to have in cheesecake do they? The truth is, don’t knock any of these until you try them. More on these savory treats to come…

The beef holds a moderate peppery and smoky taste without being too heavy. Can’t lay off the fruit salad! It’s a pinwheel of flavors. It is interchangeably tart, sweet, savory and earthy, jump-starting the palate and making you smile. Next out was the Key Lime Cheesecake. Time for dessert already? Ummmmm… yes. Studded with a triangular lime gummy, this gorgeous cake holds an incredibly - dare I say - sinful texture. Makes you long for tropical locales, and the mind-blowing tangy sweetness it contains seems bold enough to actually take you there! Uncanny flavor aside, please do be mindful of how rich these cakes are. Last on the docket, and I don’t think this quite qualifies as a dessert, was the Tomato Basil Cheesecake. And yes, this is one from the “Savory” offerings. I was at least a little skeptical, but directly after I got a taste that doubt completely fell away. It had a fluffy texture that lifted the sharpness of the tomato and the earthiness of the basil to new heights. Accept this flavor and the others into your heart (and stomach) and prepare for an angelic chorus from your taste buds. The proof is all in the name. Anthony’s cheesecake (sandwiches, soups, wraps & sides) are most certainly divinely-inspired. —Nick Durcholz For more information, please visit www.ahcheesecake.com or Like them on Facebook!

Now for the food…

First out was the Italian Beef Sandwich with a side of Anthony’s Homemade Fruit Salad. For those out there who love the heat, you are going to want to ask for the spicy relish on this one… The sandwich boasts a wonderful slow spice and with a dip in the au jus, the savory and spicy flavors really pop. The sandwich gives a great variety of textures too. Crispness from the outside of the bread into the extremely tender beef, then come the crunch of the peppers.

Matt Barker

To me, good food makes good memories.”

O

— Head Chef Matt Barker

ak Meadow Country Club Head Chef Matt Barker is originally from Elberfeld, Ind. There Barker learned to cook by working with his mother from an early age. Barker states, “She would cook every evening, and as soon as I could reach the counter I would try to help. After that, I was given a wok at an early age, and from there the trial and error of different spices and combinations of flavors started.”

As a child, Barker also enjoyed the bounty from his parents’ extensive garden. He describes it as such, “Rows of sweet corn, a variety of tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans and a large asparagus bed. My grandmother raised cattle in northern Indiana, and I raised chickens when I was younger.

of

Oak Meadow Country Club

During high school I worked at the local GUU Club where I was introduced to bird hunting. In the evenings I would run the dog and dove hunt. It was my job to prepare the doves and grill sweet corn for the hunters and dog trainers.” After high school graduation, Barker went to Vincennes University for culinary school for a brief amount of time, and from there, he moved to Evansville to bus tables and do prep work in local restaurants. From there, Barker began working at Oak Meadow Country Club. He shares, “I enjoy being a part of people’s lives through food, whether it is an anniversary for two or a wedding of 250. It is amazing to me to see the satisfaction that good food brings to an event or evening out. Also, the reminders from members and families that have celebrated memories at the club from years past show me how I have made a difference in their experience on such special occasions.” Barker also shares, “What keeps me going is the challenge of work. Going from cooking for swim meets, [to] golf outings and weddings, always presents different obstacles that motivate me. I also love the challenge of cooking different styles of food, starting at the country classics all the way to ethnic dishes. The variety of food that I cook each day, such as snow cones and hamburgers during the day, to a five course gourmet dinner in the evening, allows me to cater to all members and ages. Many challenges arise from day-to-day that teach me new techniques and ways to provide an excellent meal.” Barker describes himself as a “very simple guy” who enjoys a “classic American meal.” His favorite dish to cook is Cornmeal Crusted Trout because it reminds him of “fishing in my youth and the sauce that compliments the dish is a cucumber dill sauce that to me captures the scents of summer.” His top lunch pick at Oak Meadow is the Hot Brown, which includes smoked turkey, house made cheddar cheese sauce and is topped with Applewood smoked bacon. His top pick for the evening crowd is the Thai Glazed Salmon. He describes this dish as a “seared flank salmon that gets covered in a peanut, ginger and red pepper sauce. The sauce holds in all the moisture so the salmon is never dry and the flavors [pair] with our ever changing wine selections.” He invites you to Oak Meadow Country Club for a wonderful meal, event and social experience, and he concludes by sharing, “To me, good food makes good memories. Memories are often created by cooking in the kitchen with others who take pride in cooking. ” —Nikki Davis Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • April 2014

at the Old

National Events Plaza by Thomas Ellis

Acknowledged as the longest running and most successful Beatles tribute show in the world, RAIN is coming to the Old National Events Plaza on April 1st. t’s a stunning production that meticulously recreates the look, feel and sound of the band that changed the world. From the exuberant, infectious melodies of the early years to the artistic, studio-driven late period, RAIN is a note-for-note performance of the greatest pop songs ever written.

Jimmy “John Lennon” Irizarry spoke with News4U ahead of the show. News4U (N4U): You grew up idolizing the Beatles. How surreal is it to be fronting a universally beloved tribute band? Jimmy Irizarry (JI): I didn’t really think I’d be doing this for a living, but I’ve been doing it now for 10 years. It’s been fantastic - especially the nine month run of RAIN on Broadway. N4U: The show has been revamped over the last year in terms of

the lighting, film footage and the set list. What new songs have been added? JI: Some of the early songs like “Please Please Me” and “From Me to You” have been added, and we might include an acoustic number from Hard Day’s Night. The show needed more early material to fit the new format that we have.

The show starts at 7:30 p.m. For ticket information, visit centre.evansvillegis.com.

Evansville residents enjoy and support

SMOKEFREE AIR AIR WAS CLEANER:

O

n April 1, 2014, residents, business owners and workers would have celebrated the two-year anniversary of Evansville’s smokefree air law. The law, which protected most workers and patrons from the known cancer-causing chemicals in secondhand smoke, was ruled unconstitutional due to the exemption for the gaming floor of the casino. The vast majority of Evansville adults (86%) feel that all Evansville workers (including casino workers) should be protected from exposure to secondhand smoke in their workplaces. Smokefree Communities agrees! In an effort to gauge public support and effectiveness, Smokefree Communities commissioned several studies. According to a one recent survey, an overwhelming majority of Evansville residents (87%) rate exposure to secondhand smoke at least a moderate health hazard, with 67% rating it a serious health hazard. The public seems to be mostly informed and the scientific evidence is incontrovertible: inhaling secondhand smoke is deadly. Among Evansville adults, 74% supported the smokefree air law. What’s more – research also found that the majority of Evansville adults found it more enjoyable to go out to restaurants and bars while the law was in effect (58%) and found restaurants and bars to be healthier during that time (89%). The vast majority of Evansville adults reported that their patronage at bars and restaurants either stayed the same or increased while the law was in effect (84%).

Particle pollution, which swirls through the air of smoky nightspots, dropped 93% when Evansville’s smokefree air law was in effect. The study clearly demonstrates the health benefit that the smokefree air law provided. It also indicated that employees and patrons in smoke-filled workplaces are exposed to indoor air pollution higher than air quality levels designated as healthy by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The smokefree law could continue to be a celebrated success, but first the city council has to enact a new ordinance protecting ALL workers.

ALL WORKERS SHOULD RECEIVE EQUAL PROTECTION:

Consider the stories of Vincent Rennich and Cheryl Rose. Both were former casino employees who received more than just a paycheck for the time they spent working on casino gaming floors. Mr. Rennich, a games supervisor for over twenty-five years at the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey, received lung cancer. Ms. Rose, originally from Evansville, served as a slots director for 22 years. She passed away from lung cancer at the age of 62. Neither of these individuals had ever smoked. Rather, the common characteristic that Mr. Rennich and Ms. Rose share is their type of employment, and each of them attributed their health problems to their exposure to secondhand smoke while working on casino gaming floors. Both of these tragedies would have been prevented if the casinos they worked in had been smokefree. Evansville has the opportunity to be a positive role-model for other cities throughout the state of Indiana. We have the opportunity to have the best smokefree air law in the state.

In a case of perfect timing, the 17th Annual Evansville Philharmonic Guild Homes of Note House Tour is scheduled for April 26 in Newburgh. This year’s tour features five homes that showcase both the historical grandeur and contemporary architecture of the downtown area. With the promise of warmer weather and blue skies, a stroll through the heart of Newburgh should be on everyone’s agenda. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy the arrival of spring and see inside some truly beautiful homes. This year’s Homes of Note are: •Misti Fraser: 200 E. Jennings •Kelly and Marilyn Haley: 409 E. Jennings •Troy Wells: 212 W. Main St. •Dr. Alan and Marie-Paule Marty: 214 W. Water St. •Lockmaster Cottage: 550 Hwy. 662 The Homes of Note House Tour benefits the EPO’s and Guild’s commitment to youth music education. Tour hours are 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. A trolley will operate between the elementary school on 261 and the historic district. —Thomas Ellis

Tickets are available at Schnucks, Wildflower, Paul’s Menswear and the Evansville Philharmonic Box Office (812-425-5050) or online at evansvillephilharmonic.org. The Cost is $15 in advance or $20 on the day of the event at House of White Bridal, 3 Market St. in Newburgh.

T

he 2nd Annual Parkinson’s Smoke Out will be packed full of food vendors, two stages for the bands, 66 BBQ competitors, beer gardens and hopefully, all of you! Robert Morphew along with 65 other BBQ competitors will be showing off their very best briskets, chicken, ribs and more, for a chance at the $10,000 prize purse, in a sanctioned Kansas City BBQ Society completion. Watch, learn and be amazed by these pros, as they put time, food and pride on the line to help raise money to fight Parkinson’s Disease. While the teams’ smoky goods are for judges only, there will be plenty of vendors for the public to indulge in. The event will take place on Evansville’s Riverfront from Cherry St. to Court St. Times and dates are as follows: April 3rd at 5 - 11 p.m., April 4th at 5-11 p.m. and April 5th 11 a.m. – 11 p.m. 100% of the funds raised go to the charity. The focus of the Smoke Out is to raise money and awareness in hopes to help battle this horrible and often misunderstood disease. Parkinson’s struck a high school classmate of Morphew’s and myself over a decade ago. His name is Tommy Garrett and he battles this disease every day. I didn’t know much until speaking with Morphew, but after our chat and some research, I found this disease causes so much more than just a shaky hand. It affects the body, the brain and everyone it touches literally and figuratively. So please, come enjoy our city and what it can offer, while helping fight a disease that needs all of our attention and resources.

“Those are crucial things that any tattoo artist needs to know way in advance before they even start to think about tattooing,” Drone says. At the time he actually began tattooing people, at age 18, it was still not largely socially acceptable to get a tattoo. Drone would sometimes go two or three weeks with only a couple clients. “Now people seem less hesitant to get a tattoo,” Drone says. Though tattoos and piercings seem to be growing in popularity, they have actually been around for almost as long as humans have been. In Sept. 1991, a naturally preserved mummy was discovered in an Austrian glacier. The mummy man is called Ӧtzi and lived around 3,300 B.C. soundboard Shannon Lawson

I

f anybody knows the frustration of trying to get a foothold in the music industry, it’s Nashville singersongwriter Shannon Lawson. His story is all too familiar, a classic tale of taking one step forward and two steps back, of success so tantalizingly close yet still out of reach. But after years of near misses and false starts, Lawson’s latest songwriting effort is steadily climbing the country charts. Written with and performed by Big & Rich, “Look at You” may be a game changer. To say music is in Lawson’s blood is hardly a cliché. “My whole family plays and sings – our musical history goes all the way back to the Civil War,” he explains. “I’ve been on the stage since I was three years old. My uncle had a big red Epiphone hollow body that I would strap on and literally beat on until I had blisters on my fingers.” By the time Lawson turned 13, he was dead serious about guitar. “I was really into Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan” he says. “And I had the influences of my brothers and sisters, too – everything from ELO to Marshall Tucker. Dad was into everything from Spanish guitar to bluegrass.” With a cocktail of sounds swirling in his head, Lawson moved from his home in Taylorsville, Ky to Louisville just after his 18th birthday. He occasionally attended classes at U of L but spent most of his days studying the music

scene. ”I was dragging my guitar around with me everywhere I went. I ended up getting hired on the spot to play in a blues band on Louisville’s west side. It was a great experience, a real education,” he says. Lawson took what he learned and formed the Galoots, a bluegrass jam band that packed venues throughout the Midwest, including Nashville’s Station Inn. A publishing deal soon followed and then a contract with Universal/MCA six months later. But despite recording a strong debut album, the celebration was short-lived; mass firings at the label killed the momentum. Down but not out, Lawson next signed and recorded for Equity, an independent label that folded shortly after. Unable to launch a solo career, Lawson joined the MuzikMafia, a loose collective of country musicians founded by Big & Rich. “It was really big for a while,” says Lawson. “We toured America and lots of huge stars sat in with us – from Bon Jovi to Kid Rock. It was crazy.” But in true industry fashion, egos got in the way, and it eventually fell apart. Lawson got divorced around this period and coupled with the Mafia’s break-up, he needed a fresh start – in life and particularly in music. The relative anonymity of Evansville and the surrounding area gave him the opportunity to perform without the baggage of his musical past. Shows at places like Crickets in Newburgh won Lawson some enthusiastic new fans, including Boonville chiropractor Dr. Mitch Hayman. Bowled over, he offered to help book local shows and trumpet Lawson’s talent. Now, in addition to building a new fan base, Lawson is busy developing El Camino, an ambitious side project formed with John Nicholson. The two are currently recording a concept album – a Mexican opera that features horns, big guitars and string sections. “It’s some of the best work I’ve ever done in my life,” Lawson says. But whether the El Camino material finds an audience or the Big & Rich song conquers the country charts is ultimately not important to Lawson. “I don’t give a (bleep) about being famous. The only thing I’ve ever cared about is making enough money to survive well and do what I love to do.” —Thomas Ellis Follow Shannon Lawson on Facebook.

Ten dim and dry-rotted visages arise from the hallowed crypts of an ancient land known as Music City, USA, their life force restored specifically to carry out their eternal mission of funking your contemporarily-living face off. ere Come the Mummies rhythmically jaunt their way into Evansville on April 18 to funk the roof off of the Victory Theatre. They are made up of a group of Nashville-based musicians whom, due to allegiance to multiple music labels, wrap themselves in the fashion of the pharaohs of old to cloak their true identity. They are shielded from discovery, but they let powerful rays of funk shine through. With their identities hidden, both their splendid tom-foolery and their music remain pure. Their latest album Cryptic was

N4U: The true identities of the mummies are as mysterious as the crypts they come from... What would it take to unravel Java’s wraps? JM: Sharon Stone.

released last year. The current undead line-up includes Mummy Cass (guitar, lead vocals), Eddie Mummy (drums, vocals), Spaz Mummy (keyboards), K. W. Tut (bass, vocals), Mummy Rah (tenor sax), The Flu (baritone sax), Midnight Mummy (baritone sax), The Pole (bass), B. B. Queen (trumpet) and Java Mummy (percussion, vocals).

The bullhorn of the group, Java Mummy or J Mummy Love, took a gracious minute from his tomb to have a word with News4U.

N4U: Any significance behind the black & red paint that decorates your slowly deteriorating mug? JM: I always wished I was at least half-black. N4U: What inspired Java to get into percussion? JM: I lost the coin toss with Eddie over who got to play drums. N4U: How does it feel to make the living dance, writhe and shout with joy at a live performance after hundreds of years of not-so-eternal rest? JM: There is nothing better than making women dance and writhe. When they are under our spell, you know you can get them to do anything. This is how we keep our tour bus clean.

N4U: Is there a mummies’ track that is inspired specifically by Java? JM: I would say “Libido Knievel,” (of course) because I like stunt sex and always travel with a helmet. N4U: In a non-musical sense, what does Java bring to the mummies? JM: For some unknown reason, I am the only mummy that can talk. This means that I have to often be the band’s mouthpiece with the public. It also means that I always get what I want on our pizza. N4U: For the ladies out there, is it possible to resist the ancient and mesmerizing Java charm? JM: Nope... [For] some dudes too.

Tickets for Here Come the Mummies are available at all Ticketmaster outlets including victorytheatre.com, the Victory Theatre Box Office (day of event only) and the Ford Center Ticket Office. The show begins at 7:30 p.m.

Ratings are given from 1-5. 5 is the best rating a reviewer can give, meaning they were very pleased with the beer and would strongly recommend it. 1 is the lowest rating a reviewer can give, meaning they did not enjoy the beer at all.

The Bell’s Brewery label instantly sets a high standard in my book. Smitten pours a nice hazy, orangey-yellow color with a two-finger head and nice lacing. The nose presents light floral and citrus aromas, also bready malts with an even lighter touch of rye spiciness. Much like its aroma, the flavor has a light citrus hop presence and some maltiness. Again, the rye is oh, so subtle, but enhances the somewhat bitter finish. Its mouthfeel reveals good carbonation. It is light and drinkable with a slightly bitter finish. I’m accustomed to Bell’s brews being richer and more flavorful but, admittedly, this will be a great session ale.

AB calls this one an American Amber/Red Lager. When I poured it up I was taken aback. Its color is brown/orange, like watered-down root beer. It produced a weak half-finger head that dissipated in less than 30 seconds. Within less than a minute, it looked like a glass of colored water. The nose is mainly faint and sweet, like most any mass produced domestic lager. Flavor follows scent here with plain, grainy flavors (including corn) initially. The aftertaste actually has an everso-light touch of hops. I have nothing good to say about this beer. Probably wouldn’t take one if it were handed to me.

Shock Top Honey Bourbon Cask Wheat

AB presents this one as though it’s a craft beer. Sorry, I’m not buying it. It pours up orange and cloudy (unfiltered, good) with a measly half-finger head that dissipates quickly. It smells like artificial honey. Sorry, too pronounced and sweet to be real. Some breadiness, malt and hops… maybe. I’m not finding the bourbon. Taste is HONEY! I’m thinking artificial but, the verdict is out. It doesn’t taste bad, and at least it tastes like something. This one could be popular with people who don’t really like beer that much but enjoy sugary cocktails and soft drinks. I have to admit. I didn’t finish my sample beer.

An extremely thin white head forms on this beer, but it disappears almost instantly, leaving behind a golden liquid. The citrusy smell of hops fills the nose. The hop presence continues while tasting the beer, and some rye malt notes also come through. The hop taste remains on the palate long after drinking. This is a spring seasonal offering, so hopheads will want to get their hands on this one while it is available.

This copper-colored beer has a white head that disappears as quickly as it forms. The scent is definitely malty. The taste is mediocre, but definitely an improvement over the average mass produced offering from Busch. This beer is supposed to appeal to drinkers of Yuengling. Yuengling is a much better choice, but this beer will suffice if nothing else is available. Another good choice for someone who is a novice to the world of craft beer.

This is a cloudy golden-colored beer with a fruity aroma. I first detected the hops flavor and some citrus. I would classify this as a light IPA and wished they didn’t dial the hops flavor up as much. I am a Bell’s fan and this one was a little better that average, but not by much.

This is a nice, clear copper-colored beer. It has a light, crisp lager flavor and some have chalked it up to a rival of Yuengling. I can see where that might be the case, but this is on a little bit of the lighter side compared to a Yuengling. I went out and purchased some more of this and was pretty impressed with this beer. I am not a Busch drinker but I liked this one.

A thin white head tops this caramel-colored wheat beer. The scent of honey is the most dominant article. The honey features continue while drinking the beer, with mild bourbon notes from the bourbon stave aging process lightly coming through on the mouth. People who prefer sweeter beers would definitely enjoy this one. This is nice as an occasional treat, but this might not be the best choice for an everyday drinking beer. This beer is an amber-colored brew. This is the most complex beer that Shock Top has put out. I am still waiting for them to sell the chocolate wheat by itself. You can taste the bourbon and some vanilla. I was not sure what to think of the beer at the first drink, but when you read the label, you see it is packed with different flavors. This is a very sweet beer and very filling.

New Belgium Snapshot Wheat

An American Pale Wheat Ale from a solid Colorado Brewer. It pours a dingy beigeyellow with a foamy white head that quickly disappears. The aroma is under-whelming to me, mostly yeast, citrus and floral notes. Initially, I sense light flavors of grainy malts and wheat with a subtle sourness to it. Definitely some citrus notes there too with some yeast at the finish. A very mild bitterness that fades quickly too. In my opinion, there’s nothing wrong with this brew. That said, I’m not impressed either. It’s very drinkable and

This yellow beer forms a thin white head when poured. The scent is reminiscent of what you expect to find in a wheat beer, with notes of wheat and light banana. Upon drinking the beer, light carbonation fills the mouth. The taste is lacking for someone who is familiar with wheat beer. This could be a good choice for summer or for someone who is hesitant to drink something other than mass produced lagers.

Jabez Martinez• 4.5

The appearance of this beer was a little odd. It was a yellowish-white color with a tint of green. I could taste the wheat, but it was very light and I liked the sweet malt flavors. I could also taste some citrus, spice and just a little pepper. I would consider this a great session beer.

Random Beer Facts! Beer has officially been made in space! Barley was grown for five months in the Zvezda Service Module on the International Space Station. It had extremely limited results, though. The barley was only able to produce 250 six packs of beer. They were produced by Sapporo. The six packs will be sold through a lottery system for 10,000 yen, or roughly $110 each, unfortunately; only people in Japan are eligible for the lottery, but all proceeds will go to charity. BRANTLEY GILBERT “LET IT RIDE TOUR”

at the Ford Center by Thomas Ellis

With a rock-infused sound and swagger to spare, Brantley Gilbert has made a career out of defying country music expectations.

A

long the way, he’s scored three number one songs – “Country Must Be Country Wide,” “You Don’t Know Her Like I Do” and “Bottoms Up” – and co-written huge hits like Jason Aldean’s “Dirt Road Anthem” and “My Kinda Party.” Gilbert’s tough image and willingness to push musical boundaries may upset the traditionalists, but he’s definitely a rebel with a cause – and a rabid fan base. His country-rock disciples will be out in force when the “Let It Ride Tour” coasts into the Ford Center on May 2nd. Gilbert’s second headlining tour is a hard-earned reward for the years dedicated to becoming a sought-after songwriter in Nashville. But with such talent and natural charisma, it only made sense to launch a solo career. In truth, his fans virtually demanded it after packing local bars and venues to hear Gilbert perform songs he’d written for other artists. Released in 2009, Modern Day Prodigal Son made it clear that Gilbert wasn’t going to play nice. The sound of his

debut album veered towards rock, even metal at times, announcing a new brand of grittier, heavier country music delivered by a brash, cocky singer. While half of Nashville cringed, the other half started downloading; Gilbert’s career was off and running. 2010’s Halfway to Heaven expanded his audience with the number one party anthem, “Country Must Be Country Wide.” The video for it and “Kick It in the Sticks,” in particular, perfectly captured Gilbert’s rebel persona. But he had a softer side, too. A deluxe edition of Halfway to Heaven released in 2011 featured “You Don’t Know Her Like I Do,” an emotionally charged ballad that became his biggest hit yet. Nearly three years later, the long-awaited Just As I Am is finally set to drop in May. The new album was preceded by another number one single, “Bottoms Up,” last October. With a riff reminiscent of Metallica’s “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)” and lyrics referencing Bonnie and Clyde, the song is yet more proof that the reigning ACM New Male Artist has no time for tradition.

The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Special guests include Thomas Rhett and Eric Paslay. For ticket information, visit thefordcenter.com.

SPRING IS HERE!... Or coming…

I

n the tri- state area we can never really be sure. I am just going to put it out there and hope that good ol’ Mother Nature hears me.

April is the month that holds National “Put Your Phone Down, Go Outside and Appreciate Mother Nature Dammit” Day. If you have to hashtag that it’s #PYPDGOAMND, not that it makes it any shorter, OR that you should be on your phone to use Twitter that day. Most people know this day actually, as Earth Day. When is the last time you celebrated Earth Day? Earth Day strums up memories of arts and crafts for me, so I know it has been way too long since I have personally. This year I am changing that! I have started a somewhat natural journey about a year ago and it continually amazes me what our earth provides for us. We can breathe; there is an abundance of food and water to keep us nourished and on top of it all, our earth is down right beautiful! Look at her, seriously look at her! If you were looking for some fun ways to celebrate Earth Day, April 19th this year, here in Evansville the Franklin Street Association has a full and fun Earth Day schedule filled with a 5K color run, children’s art and science activities on the lawn of library and a bluegrass concert later in the evening. Not only will I start partaking in Earth Day now as an adult, but I also want to start treating and appreciating every day like it’s Earth Day. Because, where would we all be if she (of course the earth is a woman) gave up on us? Respect our home! Plant a tree. Go forth and do some hippie stuff this month!

Dom Hemingway

Fox Searchlight Pictures Jude Law (The Talented Mr. Ripley) plays the ill-tempered and foul-mouthed, boozing and drug-using, always opinionated, not to mention womanizing: Dom Hemingway. He is a safecracker who did not rat out his sources, recently released from a twelveyear stint in prison… and he wants to make up for that lost time! In the street-wise and masculine Guy Ritchie-fashion, director Richard Shepherd (2005’s The Matador, and 2007’s The Hunting Party) and producer Jeremy Thomas (2000’s Sexy Beast, staring Ben Kingsley) plunge us into the realm of the seedy British underworld. A place where the vile and seemingly unlikable Dom Hemingway is actually, very likeable in his own way… despite his deplorable and disgusting lifestyle. If you like movies like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels or Snatch than this might be your cup of tea.

Under the Skin A24 Films

Based upon first-time novelist Michael Faber’s strange, psychosexual tale—similar to the likes of the weird, old-school David Lynch, combined with the terrifyingly realistic David Cronenberg bodily horror—this film might not be for some tastes. This daring and evocative work by director Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast and Birth) stars the immensely talented, beautiful Scarlet Johansson (The Avengers) as the alien femme fatale, who picks up random men on the outskirts of Scotland and devouring them once she gets them back to her place. The brave Johansson has never taken on a roll quite like this: it is revealing, disturbing and unsettling. As I stated, this movie is not for everyone… It is very strange in style and demeanor. This is not popcorn entertainment, but hard science fiction used to move minds.

Out of the Furnace Relativity Media

In this fast, hard-hitting and unflinchingly brutal melodrama, we follow the hardships of two brothers: one trying to make an honest living as a steel mill worker (Christian Bale), and the other just returned from the war in Iraq (Casey Affleck). The latter cannot seem to give up the fight within himself. After spiraling into the dangerous world of underground street-fighting, he finds himself in over-his-head with a savage crime syndicate from the backwoods of the Appalachians. All of the performances are excellent, especially Woody Harrelson, the crude and menacing, drug-addled, ruthless leader of the redneck gang. By the end, we have experienced an emotional onslaught comparable to the films it seems to have borrowed from, such as Monster’s Ball and The Deer Hunter. A violent and fascinating, tragic character study with tour de force performances from all, including Willem Dafoe and Forrest Whitaker.

Gravity

Warner Bros. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are the only humans we see onscreen. That being said, the burden on actor and actress has intensified, both exponentially, as there is nothing that can divert our attention from what they are both doing and not doing, onscreen and off. The unknown is just as important as the known... And that mystery is part of the appeal of the movie. The technological wizardry used in the creation of this Oscar-winning, painstakingly digital beast was four years in the making, and the many assortments of technical teams learned as they went. Keeping in mind that there are only two, although giant (and beautifully-aged) personalities onscreen, real human emotion is happening here; despite the occasional, obvious lapses in dialogue. Technically, the movie is groundbreaking with a beautiful and frightening visual audacity, intricacy and believability. Go to space. —Russell J. cd reviews Art the Dude

Lake Minneola on My Mind Self-Released 4/5

It takes a small village to record an Art the dude album – or, more specifically, the cream of the crop of local musicians; such is the scope of the dude’s musical vision. It also takes a lifetime of experience. From humor to heartbreak, Lake Minneola on My Mind is an emotional journey, decades of living packed into 14 songs. No wonder then that the dude called on the big guns to help realize such an ambitious album: Bob Green, Monte Skelton, Greg Tuley, Gina Moore, Katie Watts, Matt Clark, John Miller and Jeff “Stick” Davis are just some of the incredibly talented musicians that signed on for the opportunity to work with an equally gifted songwriter. In the liner notes of Lake Minneola, Art the dude invites us to “keep rockin’, bluesin’ and countryin’.” It’s a pinpoint description of his sound – sometimes swinging, sometimes grooving but always moving. Opening track “Happy to be here” has a tropical, Jimmy Buffet feel with a storyteller vibe. “Social Media Makeout” is a lighthearted 12 bar blues that parodies society’s obsession with cell phone shorthand. It’s sure to put a smile on your face. A classic country ballad, “If Lovin’ You Ain’t Right” has just the right amount of grit and gravity. The dude abides.

The Scavengers Bombast Megaton Records 4/5

The Scavengers have been quietly assembling an arsenal of fun, fuzzed-out home recordings over the last few years in the Vincennes area. Bombast is the latest, the fourth and best album from the duo of Chuck Sanders and Jarvis Slade. A DIY affair in the best sense, this is music made for the sheer joy of it, no pretensions and no studio trickery – just four tracks and a lot of beer (I assume). “Lost in Bakersfield” opens with an ominous news report about animals mysteriously dropping dead in Britain, Scotland and Wales. A Black Sabbath-inspired riff then emerges, and it all seems to be getting rather heavy. But once Sanders comes in with his humorous, affected vocals, levity wins out. From here on, Bombast both rocks and amuses. “Lotto” tells the story of a lucky bastard who never has to work again and is not shy about letting you know. “Famous for Nothing” implores the Kardashians of the world to “just say no.” Both tracks are pure ear candy with hooks that would kill in a live setting. “Face Hugger” is harder to decipher, and maybe that’s for the best. Regardless, the metal guitar and siren wail recalls early Metallica – totally bombastic. Check the Scavengers out on facebook. Contact: jarvis_slade61@yahoo.com / morgan_deron@yahoo.com.

A Tribute to Jackson Browne

Looking into You Music Road Records 4.5/5 One of America’s most revered singer/songwriters, Jackson Browne is long overdue for a tribute album. The fact that Looking into You is a two cd collection that dares to omit several of Browne’s greatest hits in favor of deeper cuts speaks volumes about his legacy. But Browne’s contribution to music is even more apparent in the first rate cast assembled for this project. From Springsteen to Bonnie Raitt, the stars of rock and country lined up to pay homage. Their presence only adds authenticity to songs that stand as the most emotionally honest ever written. There’s not a weak link amongst the 23 tracks on Looking into You. The Indigo Girls really nail “Fountain of Sorrow,” effortlessly capturing the melancholy of lost love. Amy Ray’s vocals have just the right balance of resignation and cautious hopefulness. Ben Harper takes on “Jamaica Say You Will” and delivers a wonderfully subtle, bluesy performance. His interpretation of the key, closing line – “We will sail on until our waters have run dry” – is a real highlight. But leave it the Boss to steal the show. Springsteen sidesteps preconceptions and gives “Linda Paloma” a delicate, flamenco reading, sharing vocals with his wife, Patti Scialfa. It’s the sort of tribute that legends like Browne surely dream of.

cd sidebar Big Head Todd & the Monsters Black Beehive Shout! Factory

Bands that play together stay together. Big Head Todd and the Monsters formed in the 80’s and have been developing ever since. The band dropped its latest album, Black Beehive in February. The music video for the song “Josephina,” can be found on YouTube, and it has a very “old school” feel. The song’s story reminds me greatly of songs typically in the folk genre, but combined with the classic rock sounds of the instruments, gives the band a very unique sound that’s easy on the ears.

Secret Colours

Positive Distractions (Part I & II) Self-Released

The Shackeltons

Records TLE Records 3.5/5 Pennsylvania post-rockers the Shackeltons are back with their first album in six years. An often frenetic mix of bands like Fugazi, the Pixies and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Records is long on energy but just a touch short on originality. It’s not a deal breaker, though. While hardly groundbreaking, the songs mostly work and generally avoid being saddled by similarities. Still, the Shackeltons veer dangerously close at times to aping their influences rather than building on them. But Records sounds great at maximum volume, regardless. “Lights” mirrors the opening of Fugazi’s classic, “Promises,” but slowly diverges with chord changes reminiscent of Interpol. The slightly distorted, understated vocals are its saving grace, adding a nice emotional touch. Less derivative “Black Mary” is a dark, desperate plea for relief from the pain caused by a loved one’s passing. As the guitars swell, the speak-singing morphs into an anguished cry; seven minutes of tension seem go by in a heartbeat. It’s the highpoint of the album. “Kindest Words” is pure Pixies from the Joey Santiago riff to the Black Francis howl. Like much of Records, it reminds you of something else. Thanks for the (good) memories, Shackeltons. —Thomas Ellis

Rockin’ and rollin’ its way out of Chicago, Secret Colours has a self-titled album out, as well as an album called Peach, released last year. Now the band is set to release Positive Distractions (Part II), Part I already having been released digitally in February. Its physical release is April 29 for parts I and II and will both be released on vinyl only later this spring. The band is somewhere between pop rock and the Smashing Pumpkins.

Polar

Shadowed By Vultures In At the Deep End Records

Fan of metal? If you are check out Polar’s newest album Shadowed By Vultures. Polar is a UK metal-core band, which stays true to a lot of the “old school” metal bands. “Black Days” in particular had a great sound, the music itself held my attention. Polar rose to popularity with their album Iron Lungs, released in 2012. Shadowed By Vultures is set to release on April 15. —Justin Law
