The Great Pie in the Sky >> Readers, advertisers and friends of all sorts, Festival season is here! Time to break out the headdress, Jesus sandals, body paint and Camelbak, then dance yourself into a numb oblivion… But wait, not all summer festivals are created equal. The remarkable aspect of the tri-state’s thrilling three festivals in the month of June is that each one has its own unique personality. The ROMP Bluegrass Roots & Branches Festival (cover) uses the magnetic draw of the International Bluegrass Music Museum of Owensboro, KY to bring notable names in the bluegrass scene to Daviess County. These bands perfectly purvey the sounds and energy of old and also, twist up traditional tunes into something eccentric and contemporary. This fest brings together intellectual, introverted history buffs, very young, starry-eyed strangers to the strings and juvenile, exhibitionistic festies. It is a magical thing. W.C. Handy Blues & Barbeque Festival is a bit more funky and gritty. Using the heft of blues legend W.C. Handy and his connection to Henderson, KY, the festival continually draws seasoned performers who have had blues in the blood for years with immediate ties to other greats such as Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters. Try some amazing barbeque, pull up a chair and tap your toes to the blazing beat, or hug the stage, hootin’, hollerin’ and dancin’ until the last note is played. This festival brings the down home flavor.

You will struggle to find anything more “American.” This festival is family-friendly just like the rest, but regardless of your age, the Hadi Shrinersfest is for the kid in all of us! This month also marks the return of the revamped Summer Bar Guide and our newest culinary creation: the Best of the TriState Pizza Guide. there will be a children’s evening movie on Wednesday night on top of all the other usual fantastic entertainment for youngsters. Those most familiar with the Hadi Shrinersfest, in all its forms, will be ecstatic about the return of the hydroplanes! The hydroplane boats make their first return appearance with a practice at 1 p.m. on Friday. For those who are unfamiliar, a hydroplane is a very quick and agile type of watercraft that seemingly skips over water like a flat rock thrown side-arm. They can reach speeds up to 200 m.p.h. What distinguishes hydroplanes from other speed boats is that they use the water for lift as opposed to buoyancy. The Hadi Shrinersfest is an inexpensive way to spend some time outdoors with your family and friends, basking not only in the sunshine (hopefully), but also in pure American spirit.

by Thomas Ellis For over two decades, Henderson’s W.C. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival has provided the tri-state area with a fantastic week of food and live music that only gets better each year.

C

rowds continue to come in droves, packing Audubon Mill Park for one of the largest free music festivals in the nation. This year’s lineup of local and national acts includes Boscoe France, The Tarnations, Chubby Carrier, Trampled Under Foot, Joe Cotton and Southern Hospitality just to name a few. The

week-long festival closes with a set by the incomparable Charlie Musselwhite, a harmonica playing blues master who has worked with the likes of Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Guy and John Lee Hooker. Musselwhite kindly spoke to News4U ahead of the festival. News4U (N4U): You turned 70 a few months ago and yet, you haven’t slowed down at all. Charlie Musselwhite (CM): Well, there’s no retirement plan if you’re a blues musician – you just have to keep going. But I’d rather be taking it easy, you know (laughs)? N4U: You’ve forged an extremely successful musical partnership with contemporary folk/blues artist Ben Harper. How does it compare with your collaborations back in the day? CM: Back in the day, I was working with guys like Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf. They were strictly straight-ahead blues guys out of the south. Then there’s Ben who grew up in a folk scene which included blues as well as world music. When we both come together with our respective backgrounds, it really meshes together in an exciting way. N4U: You’ve won 33 W.C. Handy Awards. Do you have an anecdote to share about the man himself? CM: Well, I don’t know how many people are around today that actually saw W.C. Handy play, but I’m one of them. I was a kid growing up in Memphis and I attended a charity football game to benefit blind school kids. W.C. Handy – who was blind by then – came down from New York with his coronet to play with the band at the event. Everyone held up lit matches in the stadium. I’ll never forget it. 2014 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com 10 | June

News4U (N4U): What is the best part about playing a festival?

Nicholas Falk / Eric Robertson (NF/ER):

We have played at many festivals and the thing that makes them unique and fun is that they tend to be inclusive of all ages. We love playing for families and young people. The other thing that is great for us is that festivals like ROMP have such great lineups. We get to meet and jam with all kinds of musicians. There is something primal about jamming out in the open that encourages acoustic jams, which are at the core of our sound as a roots band. N4U: What is the funniest/ strangest thing that has happened to you guys while playing an outdoor event? NF/ER: One of the funniest things that’s ever happened to us was at ROMP last year. A friend of the festival showed up to our set with giant alien puppets. The puppets were dancing like crazy and encouraged everyone, especially us, to overdrive the energy level. Another funny thing that happened to us was at Floyd Fest in Virginia last year. The rainy weather made the festival muddy like Woodstock, so watching the crowd let loose and dance in the rain was very entertaining from the stage. N4U: You guys are self-proclaimed “electric” bluegrass, how does being plugged in add to your otherwise more traditional sound? NF/ER: Both Eric and Duncan use outboard effects pedals and amps for their traditionally

acoustic instruments. In particular, Duncan runs his fiddle through a Leslie amp, which has a rotating speaker and is typically used to amplify organs. Aside from plugging in the mandolin and fiddle, simply combining those instruments with bass and drums is also an uncommon instrumentation for a quartet. Though bluegrass is among the critical inputs to our sound, we like to say this music is called “future roots.” We are always striving to break down boundaries and definitions by fusing many influences into the sound and subject of our music. N4U: What was the creative force/ inspiration behind your new EP Idea of Love (review on page 89)? NF/ER: Idea of Love was born out of an opportunity to record. We were notified that we had the opportunity to become the first band to participate in the Music Residency program at ZooLabs in Oakland, Calif. only one month before the studio became available to us for two weeks. We pushed ourselves to finish writing the material within that month, though so much of the magic came from arranging and composing once we were in the studio. The result was that Idea of Love is more sonically cohesive and carries a theme, love, throughout each track. These songs can all be interpreted as different perspectives and stories about relationships, so naturally, we accessed a more sensitive and introspective side of our songwriting spectrum for this EP.

After taking a month off from our food guides, Pizza King is back for obvious reasons – they are pizza royalty in the tri-state. In April, we thoroughly enjoyed their homestyle wings that more than measured up to the excellence we’ve come to expect from them, and this month we got to taste the real deal: Pizza King’s classic thin crust Deluxe Pizza – sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, onions and red and green peppers. Like all things Pizza King, it’s the spices that rock here – the sausage is spread out all over and provides the biggest kick, but the red peppers also knock it out of the park. The sauce has that balance of sweet and tangy that Pizza King is known for and keeps you coming back. Keep in mind that in addition to local carryout and delivery, you can order online AND get their famous readymade Stromboli delivered out of town – check Facebook for details.

Smitty’s Italian Restaurant & Steakhouse 2109 W. Franklin St. Evansville, IN 47712 (812) 423-6280 Smittysevansville.com or find them on Facebook The Review: Best Spicy Sausage

A favorite Franklin Street establishment, Smitty’s is famous for classic steaks, seafood and pastas. It was voted the #1 Local Italian Restaurant in 2012, a well-deserved pat on the back for consistently great food and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it an ideal destination for lunch, dinner or an after work bite. In addition to an award-winning menu, Smitty’s also offers an impressive list of wines and a full bar specializing in boutique spirits and craft beer. Of course, an Italian restaurant of this caliber should also know a thing or two about pizza, and Smitty’s absolutely nails it with their Special Deluxe: Italian sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, green peppers and black olives on top of a hand-tossed crust that melts in your mouth. Baked in a brick oven for that classic, woodfired taste, the Special Deluxe has the perfect combination of sweet, savory and spicy flavors. Smitty’s can do it all.

Pizza Depot

2801 E. Boonville New Harmony Rd. Evansville, IN 47725 (812) 867-9131 Find them on Facebook The Review: Best Taco Style

Nestled in behind the Hornet’s Nest on the north side of town, Pizza Depot is one of the most family-friendly businesses around. Inside, there’s a row of arcade games (including the incomparable Ms. PacMan) and a stuffed toy machine – all sorts of things to keep the kids happy and occupied. For the adults, there’s a digital jukebox and several big screen TVs to keep track of all the big games and events. Of course, no one goes to Pizza Depot solely for the entertainment – they come for the fantastic lunch buffet and a menu that has delighted pizza lovers for over 20 years. Highlights include the Caboose, a thin crust pizza that is piled an inch and a half high with ingredients: pepperoni, sausage, beef, ham, onion, green pepper, tomatoes, mushrooms, green olives, black olives and mozzarella. Equally amazing, the Taco Pizza is made with bean dip, salsa and taco meat and topped with mozzarella and cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato and Doritos. You won’t find this on any other menu.

Lamasco Bar & Grill

1331 W. Franklin St. Evansville, IN 47710 (812) 437-0171 Lamascobarandgrill.com or Find them on Facebook The Review: Best Base Sauce (Non-Traditional)

Lamasco just doesn’t seem to know how to do anything bad. From the bands, to the breakfast, to the booze, to the burgers… everything they do at this old bar - with a hip clientele - is over the top. So, why should Amy’s Favorite Pizza be any different? Well it’s not! The crust reminds me of a drop-style dough like mom used to make, not too thin, not too thick, flaky with a large crumb. Then, here comes all the goodness! A parmesan garlic sauce is topped with spinach, sliced chicken, fresh tomato, crisp bacon and onion. Add a heaping amount of mozzarella, bake until golden brown and there you have it. Amy’s Favorite Pizza is that for a good reason, it’s freakin’ tasty! This is a thick, hearty pie that is a great change of pace from the usual tomato based pizza, and one that can satisfy the most savage of appetites.

Deerhead Sidewalk Café

222 E. Columbia St. Evansville, IN 47711 (812) 425-2515 Deerheadpizza.net or Find them on Facebook The Review: Most Unique Construction

The Deerhead has been an Evansville staple for decades now! With regular, live entertainment, a stylish old building, great cocktails and a menu that gives you plenty of options, of course they’re gonna be a local favorite. But the pizza is certainly one of the top reasons patrons keep coming back. Known for a thin, crispy crust and quality toppings, many of us have had a Deerhead pie at some point in our life. Have you had the Double Decker though? If the answer is no, you should probably stop reading this and go grab one! It’s the same great crust, a little of their slightly sweet pizza sauce, plenty of mozzarella and your choice of toppings (this one was a meat lovers), then they do it again, right on top. Baked until crisp and gooey, this pie is sure to bring you back. Yes sir, the Double Decker is double delicious!

Talk of the Town Pizza

1200 Edgar St. Evansville, IN 47710 (812) 402-8696 Talkoftownpizza.com or Find them on Facebook The Review: Best Stromboli Style

There are a couple reasons this establishment is the talk of the town. First off, its façade is pretty famous. It was the face of Lobos, the bar that characters Roseanne and Dan from the television sitcom Roseanne frequented. Secondly, it is home to some amazing pizza! All pizza from Talk of the Town is constructed with dough that is made fresh daily and cooked in a Baker’s Pride Brick Oven. The particular pizza in question here is their Loaded Pizza, which is also their most popular. Boasting 11 toppings and two cheeses this pie has pretty much everything you could ask for on very crispy thin crust. The meat and sauce were highlights. Both were so fresh and flavorful! Also, try Talk of the Town’s Veggie, Stromboli or Hawaiian pies. If you have a spare moment, grab a pizza, absorb the quaint atmosphere, have a fish bowl and let some of “Da Blues” wash over you.

Greek’s Pizzeria

240 S. Green River Rd. Evansville, IN 47714 (812) 402-4733 Greekspizzeria.com/evansville or Find them on Facebook The Review: Best White Style

Owner Scott Schaum took over Greek’s a few years ago and has since transformed it into one of the coolest joints in town – a place where friends and family alike can spend an evening watching the area’s best musicians play live while enjoying some of the area’s best pizza. The atmosphere is totally not what you’d expect from a franchise restaurant, and it’s refreshing. With candlelight setting just the right mood and wall adornments that signal a free spirit at work, Greek’s comes across more like a homegrown business – and their pizza is equally unique. We HIGHLY recommend the Traci, a white pizza with a very thin crust, spinach, feta cheese and tomatoes. The Garden Special is also a sure thing, made with a hand-tossed crust, Italian sauce, Spanish onions, green bell peppers, sliced domestic mushrooms, sliced black olives, tomatoes, banana peppers and green olives. Enough cannot be said about the crusts on both pizzas – made fresh daily with a secret franchise recipe that is out of this world.

2659 Mt. Vernon Ave. Evansville, IN 47712 (812) 464-8300 Leroystavern.com or Find them on Facebook The Review: Best Homestyle (Tie)

Leroy’s Tavern shared some delicious, traditional style wings with us in April, a classic cheeseburger in May, and now they’re back this month to prove that pizza is also in their wheelhouse. One bite of their thin crust Deluxe Pizza is all the proof you’ll need. Sprinkled with oregano and ground garlic on top, it’s generously portioned with sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, green pepper and highend mozzarella – all local ingredients. For meat lovers, in particular, this is a winner. In old school fashion, the sausage is crumbled and spread out over the whole pizza, and the pepperoni is just the right kind of spicy. Together, they play perfectly off the earthiness of the mushrooms and the crunch of the green peppers. This is exactly the sort of pizza that goes great with a cold beer or two, a little messy but not overly greasy. Come in or order online and taste for yourself. To put things in perspective, JFK was still alive when Turoni’s first appeared on the scene over 50 years ago. Not only surviving but thriving for five decades in the restaurant business is not easy, but Turoni’s has sure made it look that way with consistently great cracker crust pizzas, fresh, handcrafted beers, a warm, friendly atmosphere and excellent staff. And speaking of loyalty, their Veggie Dream pizza is a pizza to swear by, introduced way back before the health craze even started – and now more popular than ever: garlic, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, onions, green peppers, green olives, zucchini and tomatoes. For starters, it just looks delicious, and then you bite into it – the crunch of the fresh veggies is a dream, a perfect combination of ingredients that works in perfect tandem with their classic, tangy sauce.

These guys are known for their pool tables and rockin’ bands on the regular. They don’t stop there though, ice cold brews and a great bar menu are a couple more reasons to spend some time in their stools. But we’re talking pizza, so let’s talk it. I wasn’t surprised when this pie hit me hot, fresh, with plenty to share (so we made the guys at the bar happy). I can say we were all quite happy. The crust is thin, and cracker crispy. Perfectly sauced with tangy, tomato sauce, plenty of toppings and mounded with mozzarella, KC’s has another drawing attraction. Make it like you like it, and I’m sure like it, you will.

Spanky’s Una Pizza

If you’re a fan of cracker crust pizza (and really, why wouldn’t you be?), Una pizza is already on your radar. But if you’re just getting into the swing of things, Spanky’s is a great place to start. Take a look online, and you’ll see scores of enthusiastic comments from people who regularly call for city delivery/carryout or order via internet/smart phone app. A particular favorite – especially for people who can’t quite agree on toppings – is the Happy Couple. This half-and-half creation features 15 toppings in all, six meats on one side and nine veggies on the other with the classic cracker crust and sweet sauce Spanky’s is famous for. Like all their pizzas, it’s baked in a brick oven with dough made fresh daily. The meat side has a seriously savory flavor and a hint of smokiness while the veggie side is seriously tangy and crunchy. And keep in mind, Spanky’s makes fresh dough for all their menu items, including hoagies and breadsticks.

Considering the care that went into the homemade chicken wings we tasted from Lucy Bella’s back in April, we were really looking forward to this month’s offering – after all, this place can certainly make a case for being the best pizza place in Henderson. The attention to detail that goes into every unique creation on the menu has inspired a fast-growing fan base, hungry for wholly fresh pizzas like the Herbivore, Carnivore and Super Omnivore. We were treated to another irresistible signature item: the “Heart Attack in a Box” – a nacho cheese base, pepperoni, salami and bacon with American, mozzarella, provolone and cheddar cheeses all on a handmade thin crust (side note: Lucy Bella’s not responsible for actual heart attacks). Oh, baby. Between the five (!) cheeses and three meats, this pizza is absolutely loaded, so fresh it makes you truly appreciate how dedicated this place is to excellence. Old Chicago

6550 E. Lloyd Expy. Evansville, IN 47715 (812) 401-1400 oldchicago.com / find them on facebook The Review: Best BBQ Style

Don’t get us wrong, having Old Chicago participate in both the wings and burger guides the last two months was fantastic – they wowed us with their selections and drove home the point that these guys are so much more than a pizza place. But to be honest, this is the guide that we were truly psyched about as Old Chicago’s reputation for Chicago style pizza is unparalleled. The reasons for this are many, but it all starts with the dough: hand-crafted from scratch by chefs who arrive at 6 a.m. every day, so it can be served fresh from the oven to your table – no artificial additives or fillers. The sauce is made from tomatoes that are specifically grown, harvested and fresh-packed for Old Chicago, and the cheeses are 100% real. Finally, all toppings are prepared fresh which means that every pizza on the menu is something special. We were treated to the Applewood-Spiced BBQ Chicken made with the highest quality ingredients and toppings: BBQ pizza sauce, sharp cheddar and Swiss, red onions, red peppers and Applewoodspiced chicken tossed in Old Chicago’s signature BBQ sauce – all on top of their classic Chicago Thick crust. Rest assured this gourmet pizza lived up to all expectations and then some. The chicken is seasoned with an in-house Applewood seasoning, grilled, roasted and sliced; the onions and peppers simply pop. Combined with the fresh cheeses and in-house sauces, it’s mind-blowing.

After experiencing their Super Supreme pizza, one thing is for sure, you don’t have to be heady about Heady’s! With city-wide delivery, friendly staff and an encouragement of creative pizza building, it is clear that Heady’s Pizza is a top notch joint. Now, back to the pie… The Super Supreme’s 13 toppings are held in place by a nice layer of mozzarella and parmesan cheese. Hence, totally removing the messy factor from the equation and keeping all of those glorious toppings in place for appropriate enjoyment. Despite the tasty thin crust, this pizza is very substantial in volume and destroys in taste! The ham, bacon and olives were the prominent flavors, framed perfectly by the slight spice of the peppers. With so much heft comes very little grease, and that’s a good thing. Alternatively, try their Chicken Blah Blah, Meat, Chicken Spinach & Artichoke, Veggie, Spicy Buffalo Chicken or Taco pies! You have to head to Heady’s!

Lyle’s Sportszone

1404 E. Morgan Ave. Evansville, IN 47711 (812) 425-7729 The Review: Best for Pork Fanatics

Lyle’s has been a neighborhood favorite for years. And while there is obviously an emphasis on sports at this friendly bar, it has a lot more to offer, including live music every week from the likes of Scott Lindsey and Josh Merritt as well as some of the best holiday-themed celebrations around. The food is pretty sensational, too. One of the best bets on the Lyle’s menu is a thin crust pizza called the Pigskin – named so to reflect both the many kinds of pork toppings and the sports theme of the bar (pigskin = football, get it?). There’s something for every meat lover here: bacon, ham, Italian sausage, pepperoni and Stromboli meat. What immediately grabs your attention is the crispiness of the bacon which, along with the crispy crust, gives the Pigskin a serious crunch factor. The sauce has a sweet tanginess that nicely balances the salty flavor from the various meats. Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • June 2014

Dave’s Sports Den

701 N. Weinbach Ave. Evansville, IN 47711 (812) 479-8887 The Review: Best Homestyle (Tie)

It’s pretty common to find Dave’s Sports Den packed most nights of the week. Not only do they have a loyal following, but people even come in from Henderson and other outlying places to enjoy the relaxed, casual vibe or catch the latest big sporting event on the numerous big screens. It’s also nice to spend an evening out without draining the pocketbook. Dave’s is very fairly priced whether you’re there for the drinks or the food, so you can order exactly what you want – for example, their classic thin crust Grand Slam pizza. With a healthy mix of meat and veggies piled high, this homestyle creation really brings it. The sausage, in particular, pops with spices not always noticeable on similar pizzas. Dave’s has a reputation for a great thin crust, and the Grand Slam is no exception. It’s got a cracker type crunch that more than holds up under the weight of such generous toppings.

Parkway Pizza

3911 Broadway Ave. Evansville, IN 47712 (812) 423-3339 Find them on Facebook The Review: Best for Breakfast

Parkway Pizza is old school in the best way. In the game since 1975, this west side favorite earned its impeccable reputation the old fashioned way: by word of mouth. Parkway’s philosophy of keeping it fresh and local has kept them going strong for years. They make their own dough and sauce and use fresh meat from local butchers; the veggies are brought in fresh daily. Best of all, each pizza is baked in a gas-fired brick oven to lock in all the delicious flavors. Speaking of flavors, it’s time to get acquainted with their Farmer’s Daughter: beef, ham, chicken, green peppers, onions, mushrooms and banana pepper rings topped with fresh Swiss and cheddar cheeses on a cracker crust. Interestingly, what’s missing – i.e. sausage and pepperoni – is what makes this pizza great. It allows the richness of the sauce to come through in a big way and the toppings that are there combine for a taste bonanza.

You’ve got to hand it to Little Caesars. They’ve always been famous for inexpensive, “hot-n-ready” pizzas and highly entertaining commercials, but that’s only half of the story. Overlooked, perhaps, is the simple fact that they make an undeniably great tasting product. And while their prices are still ultra-competitive and their marketing campaigns are still as attention-grabbing as ever, you’ll find that people choose Little Caesars for the quality more than anything. Their philosophy, “when it comes to quality, we’re serious,” is hardly lip-service. That’s why this franchise just keeps growing and growing, adding stores from coast to coast. Now celebrating 55 years in the business, they just keep upping their game, and the best example of their commitment to quality is the Deep! Deep! Dish Pizza – a pepperoni lover’s dream. It’s a Detroit-style deep dish featuring the crisp-on-the-bottom, soft-and-chewy-on-the-inside crust that has made Little Caesars a nationwide favorite. This mega-pie is topped from one corner to the other with fresh, premium mozzarella and Muenster, baked to a crispy, caramelized cheese edge. We’re talking over two pounds of pizza, eight slices of deep dish heaven with just the right amount of Little Caesars’ classic sauce – all ingredients working together in perfect harmony (and all for an incredibly reasonable price). FYI, these guys offer a great $5 lunch combo: four slices of delicious pizza and a soft drink from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Pizza! Pizza!

Next time you’re looking for a NY style pizza crust, be sure to stop by… Harbor Bay? Yep, these guys are breaking that seafood stigma, serving up family fair from steaks and burgers, to shrimp and crab, and now, pizza (a fantastic pizza at that). The north side location has started offering a variety of specialty pizzas, and the response has been great. We had the Lighthouse, which is generously topped with beef, sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, green peppers and tomatoes. Also plenty of high-quality mozzarella cheese shares the stage with the fresh chopped veggies and quality meats. The crust however, that’s the star of the show. A New York style crust is the base for these tasty pies. It is almost buttery in texture, well seasoned and baked to a perfect golden brown. This is a crust you can actually taste and even stands out, rather than just taking the back seat. A definite must try, even if just by the slice!

One of the best and most loved restaurants on the north side, Rounders is a family favorite (large groups and teams are welcome) known for making superb thin crust pizzas. But they’re also known for delicious sandwiches including Stromboli and Italian submarines as well as classic salads and a great selection of beers, wines and drinks. Still, it’s the pizza that has put Rounders on the map, a “labor of love” that is entirely obvious when you bite into their Nameless Special. Featuring a crispy cracker crust covered by homemade Creole spices and a layer of cheddar and mozzarella cheeses, it’s a bounty of sausage, pepperoni, green peppers, beef, mushrooms and onions and sauced on top, Chicago style. All of the toppings are the freshest available, and the Creole spices truly make your taste buds come alive with a considerable zing. Dine in or carry out – the Nameless Special is reason enough to love Rounders.

If you’re a big-time pizza lover (which only makes sense if you’re reading this), then you have Roca Bar to thank for introducing the city of Evansville to the finest of foods. No joke, if it wasn’t for them, you might not have the luxury of choosing between the dozens and dozens of great pizza places in town. Roca Bar was here first and still remains one of the absolute best. It all started on the south side, Kentucky Avenue-style, where the original building stands to this day and continues to draw a regular crowd of pizza connoisseurs and new-but-soon-to-be-converted patrons alike. It’s worth a drive from anywhere in the area, but the same signature taste is also available at Roca Bar North off of Highway 41. In addition to fantastic pizza, they also offer live music performances every Friday and Saturday night by a diverse line-up of local bands and solo artists (The Jimmies, Retro Shock and Scott Winzinger, for example). But, whether you’re up north or hanging out at the original location, the pizza is what you’ve undoubtedly come for – the classic cracker crust, the homemade sauce and the fresh cheeses and toppings. It all comes together on their signature Around the World pizza: tomatoes, green peppers, red onions, mushrooms, pepperonis and sausage. This incredible creation is one of the biggest reasons Roca Bar still rules. One taste of the sauce, and you’re hooked – the rich, spicy recipe is a taste all their own. It got Evansville’s attention decades ago, and it’s only gotten better with time.

A contract with Reprise Records Nashville followed in 2010, and Ballard’s first single for the label, “Tell Me You Get Lonely,” sneaked inside the top 40. After switching to Warner Bros. in 2013, he released the hugely popular single, “Helluva Life.” The heartfelt lyrics spoke to country music fans everywhere. In February, he released Sunshine & Whiskey, an emotional album that finds Ballard at the top of his game. Ballard kindly called from Nashville to discuss his surging career. The Pizza Revolution is all about taking the show on the road. With no fixed address, this mobile operation is indeed revolutionary. You can find these guys at the Farmer’s Market all summer long or at any number of local events – just keep an eye on their Facebook page to find out where they’re setting up shop each day. Famous for amazing wood-fired pizza, it’s fair to say that their ingredients are also revolutionary – everything from honey to baby bellas to sour cream. Some of their unique pizzas include the B.L.T., the Bee Sting and the Wake-N-Bake (no shortage of catchy names on the menu). A big favorite is the Fig-N-Pig made with fig preserves, gorgonzola, prosciutto and fresh mozzarella on a thin crust. The combination of gourmet flavors is unlike most any pizza experience in Evansville – a hint of honey from the figs, smokiness from the prosciutto and a savory taste from the gorgonzola. Wow.

News4U (N4U): Did winning the Kenny Chesney Next Big Star Competition in 2008 put undue pressure on you to succeed? Frankie Ballard (FB): You know, it was a really cool thing, actually. At the time I was just playing bars and honkey-tonks and not really thinking of myself as anything more than that. What it did was give me the confidence to try to take my music to the next level and maybe try to make it in Nashville. N4U: “Tell Me You Get Lonely” was a moderately successful single, but “Helluva Life” has skyrocketed. What made the difference? FB: I really think it was the recording process. I took my time on this record and was not willing to compromise. Sometimes Nashville can get in a hurry, but I wanted to live with the recordings for a while. The single and album were not going to be done until we were happy.

BAR TALK Recently Smokefree Communities sat down with the owners of some of Evansville’s favorite local bars to discuss why they choose to be smokefree.

Shane Carey

Backstage Bar and Grill

One of the nicest things I notice about being a smokefree establishment is how clean and nice smelling our place is. If we allowed smoking it would definitely be bad for our business. When the ordinance was overturned back in February I got several phone calls, texts, and emails from customers saying that if we went back to smoking they would no longer come. A couple bars on Main Street went back to smoking and saw their customers start dropping off and within a few days they went back to being smokefree. Our customers voiced their opinion, and it was clear they wanted Backstage to be smokefree. We realize some of our patrons are smokers and that is why we built a large patio to accommodate the customers that do smoke. I feel our employees shouldn’t have to come and work in smoke, they deserve a healthy environment.

Chardonnay Howell Bokeh Lounge

Bokeh Lounge has been smokefree since we opened in 2011 and we have decided to keep it that way because of health and business reasons. We do provide a smoking area on the front porch and backyard. You are allowed to bring your drinks out there if you choose and in the colder months we provide outdoor heating so that you can stay warm while you have a smoke. I do believe that employees have the right to work in a smoke free environment. I, for one, do not think I could be in a smoke filled room for 6-8 hours a day. It’s great coming home and not having to wash my hair immediately because it reeks of cigarette smoke. Our employees that smoke have no problem going outside to smoke on their breaks. It gives them time and an opportunity to speak and get to know our patrons that are also outside smoking. Some of the feedback I receive about the lounge is that it smells clean and fresh. Personally I like that and hopefully we will always be able to keep it that way. I believe being smokefree is better for business. Bokeh Lounge tries to accommodate smokers as best as we can with our front porch and our beautifully renovated backyard. We want everyone to feel comfortable and welcome, smokers and non-smokers alike.

Aaron Kiefer Babel

We chose to be smokefree because of our concern for our customers and their health. When Chase MeNeely, part owner, and I first sat down to discuss our plans for Babel one of our main goals was to create a light tapas menu for health conscious individuals. As time passed our focus shifted to new items such as sushi and our lovely kale chips, but still never leaving that original idea. So to us, the thought of allowing smoke in our lovely establishment and contaminating our idea was never an option. While many of our customers as well as all of our employees are smokers, not one has complained about taking it outside. In fact, many of our customers and employees who smoke are thankful, because while they enjoy smoking they do not enjoy smoking indoors. On a personal level, I do not enjoy being around smoke as I know firsthand the effects it has on people. It is particularly important to me because I have relatives who have had cancer from secondhand smoke. Being smoke-free is better for our business because it keeps our customers healthy and coming back for more! Babel on!

Jeremy and Tiffany Wynn Local Bar Owners

Our decision was based truly on our past experiences. Restaurants and music venues that allow smoking smell bad, seem unclean and leave you with little desire to stay, eat great food, watch your favorite sports team or enjoy live music. We want our customers to enjoy their whole experience at our bar, and remaining smokefree has allowed us to keep those goals. We have received so many compliments about being smokefree and being a very clean establishment that they far outweigh the negative comments we received in the very beginning about our no smoking policy. In fact, the smokers who do come in tell us they have no problem stepping outside to smoke for a few minutes and coming back in because that is what they do in their own homes. Everyone knows that second hand smoke can cause health problems. Our employees agree that it is better to work in a healthier, smokefree environment. Our biggest supporters have been the musicians who play in our venue. Our customers continue to remind us with their compliments that opening and remaining smokefree was the right decision and it has been better for our business.

COOKING SPOTLIGHT Fresh, Local & Healthy Eats for Summer at

Local Farmers Markets

I

t is that time of year again, and who isn’t excited to hit the area farmers markets? If you are like me, being reigned into purchasing your fruits and vegetables at the grocery store, not knowing where they came from and realizing that your purchases are not helping the local economy, has made for an excruciatingly long winter. The trucks of goodies are now arriving though, so we can fill our tables with a plethora of items from Farmers Markets in Evansville, Henderson and Newburgh! Bobby and Sarah Cannon from Stonewall Farm out of Mt. Vernon, Ind. have been involved in the Evansville Farmers Market since 2007. They also sell out of the Newburgh Market, and will also be appearing at the new Franklin Street Bazaar (Opening Day June 21, 9 a.m. – Noon). “We love the feeling of community that we get downtown, and the familiar faces we see. I think that the Evansville market developed into something truly wonderful by the end of last summer. There was amazing food and music. People were coming down there to just hang out and listen… visit with their friends. You get a good feeling just going down there,” the Cannons shared. While at the farmers markets, Stonewall Farm sells grass-fed beef and lamb, as well as pasture-raised poultry (chicken and turkey) and pork. Their meat is raised allnatural, with no antibiotics or hormones. The Cannons continue, “We are so happy to offer heritage breed meat. Our beef is Black Angus, which is known for natural marbling and an amazing flavor. The lambs we raise are Suffolk, Dorper and Katahdin, all known for very good flavor. We have just acquired some Tamworth hogs, which are an amazing ‘bacon’ breed, known for great texture and flavor. We will also have Delaware chickens available at the end of June. The taste is hearty and oldfashioned.” The Henderson Farmers Market boasts vendors from Henderson, Daviess, McLean, Union and Webster counties in Kentucky. Special event days are usually the most attended, but other draws are when vine-ripe tomatoes, ripe peaches and fresh sweet corn are available. Additionally, a new draw this year is the winery that sets up every market day. Vendors here come in all ages, including kids from the Future Farmers of America, people who only set up on Saturdays due to other jobs and senior citizens who use this to supplement their income. They sell locallygrown fresh vegetables, fruits, baked goods, jams, relishes, honey, honey byproducts, soap, plants of all kinds, small trees, poultry eggs, cheese and wine.

“By coming to our market on our market days, a consumer can purchase produce to take home and use recipes we supply. We also have planting instructions for plants. Vendors offer one-on-one advice for cooking or planting. Food demos are available every other week by some producers to teach consumers how to use available foods,” the merchants shared. They have Third Thursday Evenings planned in June, July and August, and they have events planned every month. Jeannie Kellams of Cleo’s Bakery and Brown Bag Lunches is a vendor at the Newburgh Farmers Market. “Historic Newburgh Farmers Market gets better every year. The fresh produce, and the variety of vendors and entertainment all draw people in,” Kellams shares. Cleo’s sells scones, muffins, tea breads, coffee cakes, sweet corn cookies and coffee. “We make everything by hand from scratch. We try to use ingredients we buy from other vendors at the market. For example: strawberries, peaches, zucchini and other squash. Our coffee (Berries to Beans) is locally-roasted.” She concludes, “We enjoy being part of the community and talking to people. We have a booth right behind Cleo’s and the view of the river is perfect.”

slightly thicker crust. For a bit of a tang, dip these in the mild and silky smooth marinara sauce! Second to the plate was the Buffalo Chicken Pizza. One of my most preferred pies! It was very mild on the spice meter which is ideal for more timid palates. The texture was near sinful with the combination of tenderness from the dough, the diced chicken and the cheese. And it ends with a big crunch! The dairy presence is the shining star here. The cheese and the ranch base dominate the flavor with a smidgen of tang from the buffalo sauce. A solid pie that would make any dairy lover swoon! Last up was the Chicken Bacon Ranch Stromboli. This is a burly beast stuffed with cheese, bacon, chicken, onions and green peppers that would easily take down the most humongous hunger. More in the style of a calzone, what really stood out was the outer and inner crust. The gorgeous golden-brown outer crust was flaky with a pleasant crunch. Directly following was the inner crust which was very tender. All ingredients were very fresh showcased by the wonderful crunch of the green peppers and onions. It is a very dense dish so check yourself… Prefer different toppings? Try their Regular, All Meat, Veggie or Create-Your-Own instead! So, if you want to be part of the tasty and fun evolving tradition of Rockhouse at Wolf’s, make the trip to downtown Henderson!

or new proprietors, one of the greatest signs of respect that can be given to an establishment that is so deeply rooted in a community is allowing its spirit to intertwine with your own personal vision instead of eradicating it. The friendly folks at Rockhouse at Wolf’s, owners David & Christy Osborn, have done just that, and it is so refreshing to witness. Wolf’s was first established in 1878 and is such a Henderson mainstay, that the Osborns say they still encounter people coming in asking for Wolf’s Tavern specials such as the Hot Brown Sandwich and the Bean Soup. Rockhouse at Wolf’s gives the people want they want. For example, they serve bean soup during the cooler months and to accommodate the lovers of the Hot Brown, David is considering creating a pizza boasting the ingredients that make up the classic Kentucky, open-faced sandwich. Such respect comes from a name (Rockhouse Pizza) that didn’t even originate in Henderson, and to me that speaks volumes. The original Rockhouse calls the small town of Robards, Ky. home. So, what else makes Rockhouse at Wolf’s special? “Everything is made from scratch. Sauces, dough and the wing sauces are made in house. We smoke our own ham and turkey. We even buy locallygrown vegetables when in season,” Christy said. As far as the atmosphere goes, the history of Wolf’s has been preserved here as well. It is a perfect marriage of the old and new. It is rustic, but very much alive and comforting. Among its welcoming and simple décor was a revitalized old fireplace and on the walls were original photographs from various members of the Audubon Photography Club of Henderson. Now for the food… First up was the Cheesy Bread, and while I was not immediately filled with excitement, this appetizer really took me by surprise. Other cheesy bread I’ve experienced one has to be very careful not to fill up on it. It is usually too substantial. Rockhouse’s offering was just the opposite. The center of the Cheesy Bread was paper thin but still flavorful with garlic butter and a mixture of mozzarella and provolone cheeses. The tender texture was framed well with a very crispy,

Charisa Perkins

Cooking has always been a passion of mine. It allows me to be creative.” — Co. Head Chef Charisa Perkins

T

in Man Brewing Co. Head Chef, Charisa Perkins, grew up in Middletown, Ind., and currently resides in downtown Evansville. She attended Sullivan University in Louisville, and in 2009, graduated with a Culinary Degree. “My interest in food began when I was in college and used cooking as a stress relief. After culinary school, I felt that I had something special to offer in the culinary community,” Perkins shares. Perkins grew up with six siblings, so she has been cooking for large crowds as long as she can remember. “I have always had a passion for creating good food. I grew up watching my mother and grandmother cooking and wanted to incorporate that in my life.” As the Head Chef, Perkins wears the hat of “creator, food and beer pair-er [and] multi-tasker.”

of

Tin Man Brewing Co.

So, what brought her to this particular restaurant? “I was looking for a job and ended up serving tables at Tin Man. At one point, the owners realized my ability for creating great food and invited me to take a position in the kitchen [w]here I became Head Chef. Living downtown, I have a lot of love for the area and felt right at home at Tin Man. I’d say fate brought us together,” she says. “Cooking has always been a passion of mine. It allows me to be creative. There’s nothing like the challenge of culinary art. Creating new and exciting dishes drives me to get out of bed every day, no matter how hard and challenging the previous day was. Every time I hear feedback from someone who enjoyed my creation, I feel a deep sense of satisfaction.” On a daily basis, Perkins says that she tries everything on the menu. “I like to eat different things to keep my palate entertained. Although, this is the only place I can satisfy my craving for an excellent fried chicken and waffle sandwich.” Her favorite item on Tin Man’s menu is Soup Du Jour, and she creates a different soup everyday. “It allows me to be creative and adventurous with flavors on a daily basis. I enjoy the challenge of creating not only a new soup everyday, but a new soup that people taste and go, ‘wow, this is different and delicious!’” For lunch she recommends the restaurant’s variety of salads. The Southwest Salad is her favorite. It is served with a chipotle dressing. She describes it as being spicy but not too overpowering. “It also leaves room for one of our delicious desserts. We make all desserts in house.” These include cheesecake with a different daily topping, chocolate cake, and beignets. For the dinner crowd, Perkins shares that they have a wide variety of amazing sandwiches. “Our Chicken & Waffle Sandwich is fun and delicious. It is a piece of fried chicken on a cornbread waffle topped with a Spicy Maple Mayo sauce. The Build-Your-Own Burger option on our menu allows customers to build any kind of burger they desire. We have the option of choosing an 8 oz. beef patty, portabella mushroom, grilled chicken, or fried chicken. We have a large variety of topping options. You could make a breakfast burger with country gravy, ham, & fried egg. If you like spicy you can top your burger with jalapenos and spicy mustard mayo.” So, what really sets this restaurant apart from others in Evansville? “We aren’t set apart from Evansville. We are Evansville. We are growing and changing with the needs of the community.”

It’s no exaggeration to say that Haubstadt Sommerfest is ‘Southern Indiana’s Finest Bierstube’ – in fact, it’s trademarked.

Y

es, the party of the summer is back and more rocking than ever – three crazy nights of beer, bands and great food. But it’s not just the entertainment value that makes Sommerfest so special. This hugely popular fundraising festival has donated over $250,000 to support projects in and around Haubstadt with an emphasis on youth. It’s just one more excellent reason to come out and be a part of an event that has such a positive impact on the community. The 2014 Sommerfest runs from Thursday, June 19 through Saturday, June 21. Local favorites Hard Sunday are scheduled to get the party started Thursday night (8 p.m.) with an intense mix of 70s, 80s and 90s music – from punk to pop and everything in between. Friday night features Petersburg native Jason Sturgeon (9 p.m.), an up and coming country star with several big radio hits, including “Angel Eyes.” His unmistakable songwriting talent has earned him the opportunity to share the stage with such established artists as Luke Bryan, Dierks Bentley and Brooks & Dunn. And to bring the festival to an appropriate close, Saturday night features McFly! Back to 80s, back by popular demand. This year’s entertainment line-up has something for everyone, so come out and enjoy Southern Indiana’s Finest Bierstube. You’ll have a blast and help support the community at the same time.

2nd Annual

SMILE On Down Syndrome Trucks & Heroes

T

he 2nd annual SMILE on Down Syndrome Trucks & Heroes will be an opportunity for young and old alike to come check out some of the tri-state area’s biggest and most fun trucks and working vehicles. It will also be an opportunity for the young and young at heart to meet some of our area’s finest police, fire, medical and military heroes. Last year’s event brought in over 500 guests and featured 47 area vehicles including new and vintage military vehicles, fire trucks, the SWAT truck, limos of all shapes and sizes and other commercial and non-profit vehicles. The Hadi Funsters and a number of area characters are also scheduled to make an appearance. This year’s event is also slated to include a helicopter! The event will be free to attend, but a donation of non-perishable food items will be accepted to help stock the food pantry at Patchwork Central. Scheduled for 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, the event’s first hour will be siren and lights free for our friends with sensory issues, including our guests who are on the autism spectrum. Trucks & Heroes will take place in the parking Lot of the Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, Ind. This event is open to the public. SMILE on Down Syndrome looks forward to seeing young and old alike enjoying the vehicles and meeting our local heroes!

n an encore performance, at the West Library Lawn Park on Franklin Street, June 22, Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band will be performing a free concert for the entire family. The husband and wife pair has been described by the Style Network as the “Rolling Stones of kid’s music.” CocaCola named the band’s song “Falling” as its national summer campaign song, and the group has been featured live on CNN. The band’s number one song of the year, “Thingamajig,” can be found on You Tube and is the smash hit on the album Lishy Lou and Lucky Too. The music of Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band is also suitable for a classroom setting, singing about things such as exploration and history. They even have a song called “8,000 ft.” about Amelia Earhart. To garner further credit with the little ones, the band also has apps for smart phones and tablets that feature characters from the band’s show. The group was the first American band to win a Latin Grammy for children’s music. They will also be performing on June 21 at “Art in the Park” in Wesselman Woods. Families that attend both concerts will be entered for an opportunity to win one of two prize baskets that have been provided by the Franklin Street Events Association. —Justin Law The concert begins at 5 p.m. on the West Library Lawn Park on Franklin Street. localtalent Matt Grisham

T

he world of magic is a funny thing, even sarcastic at times. Matt Grisham has been interested in magic ever since a magician came to his birthday party as a child. “After the show my parents gave me a magic kit as a birthday gift… I got really interested in the kit and started looking everywhere for more magic,” Grisham said. A rather shy kid, Grisham learned a lot from books and simply trying tricks out, which he credits with helping him to “come out of his shell” a bit. He even practiced on friends and teachers in school. Hypnosis didn’t enter his life until Grisham was in college. Completely selftaught, he began doing a show, called “Come Sleep with the Best.” He started out with close up hypnosis, even testing it out on his wife. Now, his audiences turn into everything from zombies to ballerinas. Grisham takes volunteers to a place of their mind where they are comfortable. He plays off of this state of mind and uses suggestion to create the scenario. And then, he waits for the possible outcomes. Grisham said the best comparison to hypnosis he has is singing in the shower. People who would never sing in front of other people have no problems doing it alone. They simply let go. Hypnosis is another way to let go. “It’s just me and microphone. It’s a very raw type of performance. I spend an hour and half on stage talking and getting to play with the audience,” Grisham said.

72 | June 2014

In his show, “Magic Has Never Been More Sarcastic,” many of the tricks are things Grisham has come up with on his own. Some of his tricks have even been sold to other magicians. At one point in the show, he catches a paintball in his mouth which is shot out of a paintball gun by a member of the audience. Grisham said it is important to be as interactive with the audience as possible. He also uses story based comedy in his act, along with visual comedy, and he brings in personal experience to help him connect with his crowd. He brings up topics that people can relate to from their own lives. From the ages of 13 to 18 Grisham was a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians (IBM), which helps younger, aspiring magicians learn from more experienced ones. Now, as a professional, Grisham travels all around the country his wife at his side. She runs her own booking agency. “The best part about traveling so much is that we get tons of mini vacations,” Grisham said, “We tend to get to places a day early at least, which gives us time to explore and hang out.” Grisham mainly performs on college campuses, at comedy clubs and corporate shows, usually with a few months off each year to recharge. Aside from magic and hypnosis, Grisham enjoys working with his hands. He does woodwork and uses the time to relax. He is a four time Variety Performer of the Year and has been named performer of the year by the IBM, as well as Indiana’s Stand-Up Performer of the Year. —Justin Law

soundboard Calabash

L

eading the charge for original music in the tri-state, local group Calabash just claimed first prize at the Rockin River City Ride Battle of the Bands. Now reigning as the “Best Band in the Tri-State,” the five talented guys that make up Calabash (Jarod Heim, Paul Wiemeier, Zack Killebrew, Ryan Hadley and Zach Slinglander) are dedicated to writing and performing original music despite the limited venues in the area that promote and encourage creativity. Interestingly, band co-founders Heim and Wiemeier moved from Nashville – the songwriting capital of the world – back to Evansville in 2007 to try and give the band thing a go. This might seem antithetical to the cause, but lead guitarist/vocalist Heim swears it all makes sense. “Nashville might be the songwriting capital, but it’s also the most competitive city in the U.S. to try and make it in the music business – it’s difficult to get anywhere unless you’re actually playing country music,” he explains. Calabash does not play country music. And while they don’t care to put a label on the band’s sound, you can safely call it eclectic, the result of a wide range of musical influences including the Grateful Dead, Bob Marley, Pink Floyd and Wilco – even bluegrass. Simply put, it’s a sound that has a little something for everybody. Before the move to Nashville, Heim and rhythm guitarist/vocalist Wiemeier had freelanced around town, building separate but similar followings for their solo performances. Knowing that they had a fan base anticipating

their return made the decision to come back to Evansville much easier; so did the city’s location. “Geographically, Evansville is a short distance from five or six great cities – which means it’s great for expanding out after paying local dues,” Wiemeier says. It was then just a matter of putting together a cracking band and getting down to business. Percussionist Hadley was the first to join up with the two guitarists. Better known as “Cherokee,” he plays a bit of everything – congas, bongos, timbale, cymbals, chimes, djembe, etc. They clicked immediately but still needed the bottom end to their sound. “We were looking for a bassist, and we saw Zack one night at the Deerhead,” says Wiemeier. “We asked him to go get his bass and play with us on stage.” Killebrew was up for the challenge. “I was actually in two other bands at the time, but I couldn’t progress or get better in terms of the talent,” he says. “Calabash is where I belong. We all think alike; we all have the same tastes.” After a couple of failed attempts to secure a solid, committed drummer, Calabash tapped former Namaste member Slinglander, who the band had “coveted from afar for years.” “I had to think about joining Calabash,” he says. “I had just gotten out of a long (musical) relationship, if you will. But our first practice went really well; we gelled.” A formidable rhythm section, Hadley, Killebrew and Slinglander have breathed new life into the older songs and given an edge to more recent material. The band has never sounded better and is primed to head into the studio this summer and record an album, part of the prize package for winning the Battle of the Bands. In the meantime, Calabash plans to keep playing local and regional venues that welcome original music. You can catch them at Lamasco Bar on June 7. —Thomas Ellis Find Calabash on Facebook.

Goose Island Beer Co. Endless IPA

Daniel Knight • 4

Here is yet another American IPA offering from Goose Island. This one is billed as a “session ale.” It pours a light, golden color with a body that is clear. There’s a lot of light bubbly head and a generous amount of lacing as well, as one drinks it down. The aroma is light and piney with spicy hops and some light malt touch. It tastes like it smells mostly, with a piney, citrusy dominated taste and notes of grass and orange. There’s an earthy, herbal hops flavor there as well. Overall, I like this one. It’s very light as IPA’s go, yet delivers enough of the IPA backbone to pacify this IPA fan.

Paul Bragin • 4.5

A thick and long-lasting white head forms on this golden-colored beer when poured in a nonic pub glass. The scent is full of hoppy notes like pine and citrus. The hops continue when tasting the beer. This beer is crisp, with a light mouthfeel and very refreshing. Since it has lower alcohol content than most IPAs, it’s great for having a few. It could pair well with spicy foods.

Jabez Martinez • 4

This beer is a golden, amber-colored beer with good carbonation. I enjoyed the sweets hops flavor and it was not too overpowering. I could also taste a pear flavor and I would say this is actually one of the best IPAs I’ve tried. I am not sure if I am actually starting to enjoy IPA’s, or this one is just that good.

North Peak Brewing Co. Archangel Summer Wheat

Daniel Knight • 3

From Michigan, one of the most prolific craft brew states. Archangel pours a hazy, goldenorange color and makes a pretty creamy head. The nose is light, mostly bready, with the most subtle cherry aroma, not particularly inviting actually. The taste opens with some unusual yeast twang and faint hop flavor, then replaced by bitter red cherries and an unidentifiable bitterness. The aftertaste is earthy, tart and bitter. I wasn’t especially fond of this one.

Paul Bragin • 4

A small, white head tops this wheat beer. The normal scents found in wheat beer come through, along with a hint of cherries. Wheat and cherries dominate the flavor profile as well, with a light hop presence and some cherry notes in the aftertaste. This beer is light and refreshing. It would be very good for a summer cookout, with lighter dishes or it could be good when paired with cherry desserts.

Jabez Martinez • 3

I had high hopes with this beer. It said it was brewed with cherry juice, but I couldn’t really taste any. Actually, it did not have much flavor at all. Maybe my taste buds were fried from the other beers I sampled. But overall, it just had a bland beer flavor with a small hint of cherry. It was hard to detect. It says it is a summer wheat, but it was really light in flavor.

Johnny Appleseed Hard Apple Cider

Daniel Knight • 2.5

This beer pours a clear, pale yellow with very small white head. Aroma is sweet apple with medium body and light carbonation. Initially, the taste is very sweet and likable with no hint of the 5.5% alcohol content. Then, the sweetness seems over the top. I don’t know the ingredients but, it makes me wonder. I’m not a regular drinker of hard ciders, and so, not likely the ideal reviewer, but I’ve had a couple of the English ones and experienced a more natural tasting, less sweet product. This one will be well-liked by non-beer drinkers that like sugary sweet.

Paul Bragin • 2

No head forms on this cider. It tastes and smells like apples. If you are thirsty, this is a liquid that could help quench your thirst. The website suggests serving it over ice, but I drank it from a glass and the bottle. I would prefer a non-alcoholic sparkling cider like Martinelli’s instead. Likewise, any number of traditionally-brewed American or English ciders would be preferable to this. It might be useful for cooking in apple desserts.

Jabez Martinez • 4

This looked a little like a beer… It actually had a nice, malty flavor that went with the apple. I am usually not a fan of the hard ciders, but this one was not bad. I would usually place these beverages in the dessert category because I could only drink one. They are so sweet! Not my cup of tea, but not bad just the same.

Clown Shoes Brewery Clementine White Ale

Daniel Knight • 4.5

This Belgian-inspired witbier (wheat beer) is from Clown Shoes Brewery in Massachusetts. I’m admittedly not usually a big fan of witbiers, so this one caught me off guard. The appearance is a hazy straw, golden-white with a fairly thick head with a few laces of the head remaining after a while. The nose is aromatic with sweet orange zest and a bit of coriander spice sitting atop a pleasant yeast breadiness. The flavor is pleasantly balanced between mild sweetness and tartness. I found the brew to have substantial body while still being light and drinkable. I recommend it as

a great, refreshing session ale, especially in the summer season. I’ll probably get more of this in the future.

Random Beer Facts!

A very thin white head forms on this beer, but it disappears almost immediately, leaving behind a deep amber-colored beer. The scent contains strong citrus notes from the clementine, followed by the smell of wheat. The clementine and wheat stay while drinking the beer, which is light and crisp in the mouth. This offering could pair well with lighter summer dishes like salads with fruity dressings and light cheeses.

1.) At any given time, 0.7% of the world is drunk. So 50 million people are drunk right now.

4.) Amsterdam pays alcoholics in beer to clean streets: 5 cans of beer for a day’s work, plus €10 and tobacco.

This is an amber-colored beer. I would think someone could compare it to a Blue Moon, but it is better. I enjoyed the sweet hops, orange peel and coriander, but it also had a yeasty, wheat flavor. I did notice the 6% ABV. I will be looking for this one.

2.) The world’s longest hangover lasted 4 weeks after a Scotsman consumed 60 pints of beer. 3.) The strongest beer in the world has a 67.5% alcohol content.

or the first time in North America, equestrian royalty hailing from the country of Spain will mesmerize audiences in the Gala of the Royal Horses. Renowned riding master, Rene Gasser, has been enchanting audiences with his outstanding show, seen only at famous riding schools in Vienna and Spain. Known for their athleticism and grace, these horses are some of the most celebrated in history, having been favored for centuries by royalty, equestrian riders and bullfighters. “The unique qualities of the Royal Horses single them out from all other breeds in the Equine world. Their physical beauty and grace, coupled with exceptional courage and nobility make them an object of admiration and a source of inspiration for horse lovers everywhere,” says Gasser.

Breeds included in the show are Andalusian, Lipizzaner, Friesian and Arab. Only the finest Spanish horses are approved as breeding horses to continue the line of “Pura Raza Español.” The horses were instrumental in helping the Spanish conquer the new worlds. This is why they have been revered for so long by the culture. “We owe our victory to our horses,” is a commonly held theme in Spain. Not only will audiences be amazed by the performance of the horses, but stunning traditional Flamenco music and dancing will complete the Spanish experience. You do not have to be a distinguished equestrian to appreciate the elegance, beauty and style of the Royal Horses. Horse and animal lovers of all ages will be amazed at beauty of the entire event.

B

est known for such international hits as “Sundown,” “Rainy Day People” and “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” Lightfoot’s songs have been recorded by a litany of past and present day stars - from Elvis Presley to John Mellencamp. Indeed, it’s been a long and winding career for the Canadian-born musician. Success in his home country came as early as 1962 with “(Remember Me) I’m the One,” a top ten hit, but it wasn’t until 1970 that Lightfoot made an impact on the US charts with “If You Could Read My Mind.” The top five hit paved the way for a run of memorable singles and albums that have stood the test of time and inspired legions of devoted fans all over the world. Come see the rebirth of a music legend at the Victory Theatre on June 25. The show starts at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. For more information, visit victorytheatre.com.

cd reviews Buzz Osborne

This Machine Kills Artists Ipecac Recordings 3.5/5 30 plus years after forming the legendary sludge metal group Melvins, front man and primary songwriter Buzz Osborne is going solo – acoustic solo, no less. Whether this is a one-off creative adventure or something more remains to be seen, but it’s a refreshing change, nonetheless. But perhaps to allay hardcore Melvins fans living in fear of a stripped down sound, Osborne has issued the following statement: “I have no interest in sounding like a crappy version of James Taylor or a half-assed version of Woody Guthrie. No thanks – this album is a different kind of animal.” And indeed, King Buzzo takes an aggressive approach here, firing off layers of speedy acoustic riffs on his Buck Owens red, white and blue guitar. That’s the good news about This Machine Kills Artists. The notso-bad news is that once you’ve become acquainted with Osborne’s acoustic approach on opening track, “Dark Brown Teeth,” you’ve effectively gotten the gist of all 17 tracks – they all follow a similar pattern with similar grooves. What makes this album click, though, is Osborne’s various vocal personas. At times, he sounds ghostly, his voice enveloped in reverb; other times, he wails like Dead or Alive’s Pete Burns. It’s both comical and creepy. Even more so than with Melvins, the acoustic soundtrack for TMKA allows Osborne to be heard in all his pseudo-evil glory.

The Jason Lee McKinney Band Chasing Obscurity Self-Released 4/5

“My hometown don’t love me, but I’m just fine chasing obscurity.” This sarcastic gem of a line from “Old Souls” on Jason Lee McKinney’s latest album says it all. Back with a new collection of songs just over a year after the excellent Troubadours, Vagabonds & Thieves, his selfdeprecating sense of humor is clearly intact as is his knack for writing a great melody. McKinney and his band crank up the guitars for a rougher edge that seems tailor-made for the stage. That’s not to say the boys have left last year’s more subdued vibe completely behind, but there’s definitely more bite – and a little bitterness here, too. Right from the opening riff of “Selfish Prick,” the band sounds amped up with a Southern rock feel that ideally suits McKinney’s blunt words: “So let’s lay it out as plain as it can be / I don’t care about anyone but me.” Another rocker, “Hearts on a Sleeve” is pure Tom Petty; the band rivals the Heartbreakers here and McKinney casually tosses out another gem: “Then I hear the sound of you calling my name / falling back into our beautiful disaster.”

Unicycle Loves You

The Dead Age Highwheel Records/Mecca Lecca 4/5 Hailing from Brooklyn, Unicycle Loves You loves to experiment with both style and sound. The trio has tried out jangly power pop, post-new wave and psychedelic garage rock over the course of three albums. Now The Dead Age signals yet another musical move – a sort of fuzzed-out shoegaze that is often heavy and chaotic with recording levels pushed to the max for distorted production. It’s simultaneously disorienting and beautiful at times – and ultimately uplifting. The first thing that jumps out of opening track, “Falling Off,” is the massive drum sound, played with concerted simplicity, Moe Tucker style. The guitars are nothing short of gleeful, the melody pushing through the wall of feedback. But here, as on the rest of TDA, the words are buried in the mix. It’s the one production choice that disappoints; there’s never a real connection with the voice. Though when the soundtrack is as joyous as “Face Tattoo” or as dead cool as “JAWS,” it hardly matters – these two tracks most successfully blend ULY’s influences: Jesus and the Mary Chain, Velvet Underground and My Bloody Valentine to name but a few.

Dead Stars

Slumber Old Flame Records

For those of you who are fans of indie music, check out Dead Stars’ new album entitled Slumber. Formed in 2009, the band got its start in Brooklyn, NY and released three EP’s on their own prior to the 2013 release of their album High Gain. Now the band is set to release its first full length album, Slumber. The band has hints of Foo Fighters and Smashing Pumpkins mixed into its sound, which manifest in the song “Daylight.” Dead Stars’ album Slumber is set to drop in June.

The Boston Boys

“Any Daydreaming Morning” has an odd sixties vibe that harkens back to the simple love songs of that era complete with a waltz beat. It’s appropriately dreamy and sweet and a little weird – an apt description of TDA.

Silverbird Surface Life Self-Released 4/5

Silverbird mastermind Tim Barr has an unlikely musical pedigree that includes playing with jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie’s longtime pianist Mike Longo as well as Lizzy Grant (aka Lana Del Rey) among others. And while the NYC newcomer and his band members don’t come across like a jazz group fronted by a torch singer, the influences are apparent on Surface Life. The five track EP is a complex, expertly arranged collection of moving melodies that draw comparison to both Wilco and Sparklehorse but also recall 90s era British bands like The Verve. “Hollow Heart” is a strong opener, a gospel-tinged track underpinned by an organ-driven progression straight from church. Barr’s understated vocals are backed by a small choir, and the melody slowly blossoms as guitars take over and the rhythm gets in full swing. “Silverbird” is the clear Lana Del Rey connection, a dark, sinewy track that gets under the skin. There’s a noticeable ache in Barr’s falsetto as he sings “Sliverbird, gone and stole my heart away”; there’s also a noticeable Portishead influence that the band exploits to great effect. “When We Went to the Country” closes the EP brilliantly, a deceptively jazzy number that seems to float aimlessly but, in fact, is anchored by a gorgeously sad chord progression and spiked with lyrical wisdom: “I should have listened when you spoke / I should have listened but my ears were broke.”

Idea of Love Self-Released

Let’s talk roots groups. Releasing their third album, Idea of Love, The Boston Boys have are an up and coming roots group. The band formed in 2012 and play all over the world. Thier newest album is six tracks long and my favorite, by far, was “Between You and Me.” It has a classic feel to it that I really responded to above all the other tracks on the album. The Boston Boys’ album Idea of Love is out now.

Peach Kings Mojo Thunder Self-Released

If dark and sultry sound is music to your ears, then give Peach Kings’ new album, Mojo Thunder, a listen. Originating from LA, the band draws its inspiration from a wide array of artists, including Nancy Sinatra, Roy Orbison and Led Zeppelin. Many of the band’s influences can be recognized in the song “Be Around.” It has a slow, thick sound that was the most enjoyable for me throughout the entire album. The release date for Peach Kings’ Mojo Thunder is set for June.
