“More than a country music legend, Kenny Rogers is a cultural icon.” “The Gambler” from Texas seems to be everywhere these days. His recent – and hilarious – Geico commercial is in heavy rotation as are his many hit singles over the years. And then there’s the oft-run, classic Seinfeld episode featuring Kenny Rogers Roasters. His presence is so comforting that it’s almost hard to imagine life without Rogers – especially every holiday season when he takes the stage again to do what he does best: sing the songs that have made him such a beloved personality along with a selection of Christmas favorites – 33 years running.

On December 7, Rogers brings his annual holiday tour to the Ford Center with special guest Linda Davis and a little help from a local choir and local children. Expect to hear the very best of his 120 hits, including “Lucille,” “The Gambler” and “Islands in the Stream” plus beautiful renderings of “O Holy Night,” “White Christmas” and more. Of course, Rogers is always good for a laugh or two between songs as well, his good-natured, self-deprecating humor still as sharp as ever at the age of 76. Yes, it’s been nearly 40 years since “Lucille” hit number one on both the country and pop charts, selling millions of copies and establishing Rogers as a major artist. His conversational style of singing and lyrics about everyday life struggles struck a chord with rural America and created a fiercely loyal fan base that has seen him through the inevitable ups and downs of the music business. Over the years, Rogers has collected a trove of awards – Grammys, CMAs and ACMAs. In 2013, he received the ultimate recognition: induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame. But instead of signaling the end of a great career, it only motivated Rogers to keep moving forward. Fittingly, he was nominated this year for a CMA – his fifth time with Dolly Parton – for the duet “You Can’t Make Old Friends.” The song, a touching reunion for the two longtime musical partners, brings their relationship full circle and proves that age truly is just a number. – Thomas Ellis For ticket information, visit thefordcenter.com. Formed on IU’s Bloomington campus nearly 20 years ago, the a cappella group Straight No Chaser has ridden a wave of YouTube support since being (re)discovered in 2006. By now, most fans are familiar with the back story: 10 college students with a shared love for singing came together in 1996 and for three years, played venues both close to home and all over the country under a name inspired by the title track off of Thelonius Monk’s 1967 album, Straight No Chaser. After several members graduated in 1999, new singers were recruited and the group continued to perform locally. Then the unexpected happened. In 2006, a video of the original SNC’s version of “The 12 Days of Christmas” was posted on YouTube. Their fresh take on the holiday classic (among other songs, it memorably wove Toto’s “Africa” into the famous melody) was viewed millions of times and led to a near-complete reunion of the initial members and a recording contract with Atlantic Records. The group’s debut, Holiday Spirits, was recorded in Bloomington and became a huge hit. TV appearances followed as well as the taping of a live concert special in New York City. With a huge swell of support online and at their shows, the guys recorded an EP, Six Pack, and a second holiday-themed album, Christmas Cheers.

8 | December 2014

Again, SNC’s clever vocal approach to such standards as “We Three Kings,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Jingle Bells” captured the attention of the music-buying public eager for something a little out of the ordinary. 2010 saw the first non-holiday album by SNC, With a Twist, a wide-ranging collection of cover songs from Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love” to the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Under the Bridge” and such unexpected fusions as Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours” with “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Six Pack Vol. 2 appeared a year later followed by the latest non-holiday album, Under the Influence, in 2013. The latter featured typically inspired covers of monster hits like “Rolling in the Deep” and “Kiss from a Rose.” Six months later, a holiday edition EP was released that included a collaboration with Sir Paul McCartney. The current “Happy Hour Tour” brings together SNC’s most popular covers and spins on holiday classics. Come out and enjoy a family-friendly evening of beautiful melodies and inventive harmonies. – Thomas Ellis For ticket information, visit centre.evansvillegis.com. The 2014-2015 Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra season just keeps getting better. After November’s moving performance of Britten’s War Requiem, a timely tribute to our veterans, the EPO is back and in full holiday mode, presenting its annual Peppermint Pops show at the Victory Theatre on December 6 and 7. The much beloved family tradition features both the Evansville Philharmonic Chorus and the Evansville Children’s Choir with appearances by Lisa Vroman, best known for her role on Broadway as Christine in the Phantom of the Opera, and…wait for it…jolly old St. Nick! He’s taking time out of his busy schedule to join Maestro Savia and help spread some Christmas cheer through the timeless holiday music of

Peppermint Pops. This is truly a show for all ages and guaranteed to get you in the spirit of the season. In addition to playing the role of Christine, Vroman, a versatile soprano, has starred as Rosabella in The Most Happy Fella and Charlotte in A Little Night Music with the New York City Opera and Michigan Opera Theatre, respectively. Her achievements both on stage and off are well documented with a repertoire that ranges from Stravinsky to Weill to Broadway. Peppermint Pops is always a highlight of each EPO season, but there are even more great performances on tap for December. For an extra helping of holiday goodness, head back to the Victory Theatre the following weekend for the Evansville Ballet’s presentation

The tri-state’s newest and hottest nightclub is sending 2014 out in style with a performance by Slick Willy, a veteran cover band with a rocking repertoire. Lead singer and founding member Brian Hart has a long history with the venue. “I’ve been playing here since back when it was called Charlie’s,” the 42-year-old says. “It’s always been a very professional place – one of the top places to play in the area. They’ve got a top of the line sound system and light show.” While the band’s name may be tongue-in-cheek, Hart and his fellow members (Emily Ross, Josh Vanover, Josh Rogers and Dan Boogie Biggs) are all business when it comes to putting on a great show. They play a little bit of everything, including songs by Brantley Gilbert, Nickelback and Theory of a Deadman plus crowd-pleasers like

“Brickhouse” and “Play that Funky Music.” In addition to showcasing Slick Willy’s wide appeal, the New Year’s show is also an opportunity for Hart to promote his solo artistry. He’s planning a CD release party that night (with t-shirts for sale, most likely) and is quite chuffed. “A lot of good things have come of out my original songs,” he says. “I got to open at the Big O music festival when Blake Shelton was there and I’ve also played with Travis Tritt, people like that. We’re going to try to focus more on my name with the new album coming out. Hopefully, big things are ahead.” One thing that will certainly help is airplay.

According to Hart, 90.3 WKCW intends to start including local originals in their daily rotation, and his songs are on the list. In the meantime, Hart and the rest of Slick Willy are committed to making your New Year’s Eve a memorable one at Elixirs Nightclub. They’ve rocked just about every venue in the area, so you’ll be in good hands as the clock creeps towards midnight and the start of 2015. Hart is particularly excited about the new beginning and the prospect of making waves with his CD release. “We’re going to really focus on it and shoot for the stars.” – Thomas Ellis Elixirs is located at 2044 US 41 North in Henderson. B

ased in Carbondale, Ill, the Swamp Tigers are much more than just a “rockabilly” band, a generic term that the guys use to describe their sound for the purpose of keeping things simple. But while that description certainly touches on what this talented trio does, it’s ultimately misleading. In fact, rather than the inevitable Brian Setzer/Stray Cats association that springs to mind, the Swamp Tigers aim for the classic honky tonk of Johnny Horton or the raw rock and roll of Carl Perkins – artists that recorded music in its purest form. Slightly more contemporary influences include BR549 and NRBQ along with guitarist Andrew Staff’s current (and even more contemporary) favorite, the Bellfuries, a throw-it-all-in-a-blender sort of band that long ago broke free from the “rockabilly” tag – a band that the Swamp Tigers look to emulate. Over the last six years, Staff and upright bassist Blake Bramlett (drummer Zachary Kemp is new to ST) have built a large regional following in southern Illinois

by way of a dynamic, free-wheeling live set that – like the approach of the Bellfuries – incorporates a little bit of everything: country, rock, jazz – you name it. It all gets filtered through the ST machine and delivered with unstoppable energy. You really have to see it to believe it. Speaking of…the Swamp Tigers arrive in Evansville later in December to play their first “real” shows here (Staff vaguely recalls a wedding performance some time ago) at Legends Lounge inside River City Recreation. Come and get a virtual education in how to whip a crowd into a frenzy as well as a lesson in authenticity as the trio tears through classics by the likes of Webb Pierce, Link Wray and many other artists who helped to define their respective genres. It’s all happening December 19 and 20 at Legends Lounge. – Thomas Ellis Find Swamp Tigers on Facebook. Legends Lounge (inside River City Recreation) is located at 1050 S. Weinbach Ave., 812-477-5323. If you ever have the opportunity to sit down for a chat with Smitty’s Executive Chef Romie Kimbrell and Dining Room Manager Shannon Slygh, please do; you will be thoroughly entertained. The two are veterans of the restaurant business with no shortage of amusing stories to share. But most refreshingly, they’re honest. A few years ago, Smitty’s Tavern, a Franklin Street hangout since 2001, transitioned to Smitty’s Italian Steakhouse, a more traditional restaurant. Kimbrell is the first to admit that it didn’t all go according to plan – at least initially. “The first year was kind of hit and miss,” he says. “It was a little all over the place with the types of food we featured. I redesigned the kitchen three or four times.” Slygh, too, found the changeover a challenge, but over time, the new direction started to connect with the “old faithful” and apart from a few menu tweaks, it’s been smooth(er) sailing. Kimbrell, who oversees the kitchen at both Smitty’s and Gerst Haus, has always loved lasagna, pastas and pizzas. It was his idea to go Italian along with a great selection of seafood and steaks. “It turned out to be a pretty good approach,” he says. Even so, the restaurant hasn’t abandoned the Tavern crowd at all. Smitty’s still cooks up a mean burger and staples such as homemade pizzas and cheese toast aren’t going anywhere. Now in her 12th year of service, Slygh is very happy with the evolution of the menu, particularly the red meat choices. “Personally, I like the steaks – the Rib-Eye is incredible. But you can get a little bit of everything, it’s a good balance,” she says. Included in that good balance are such highlights as Grouper Parmigiana, Chicken Marsala, Baked Spaghetti and any number of Slygh’s preferred red meats, from the Rib-Eye to Porterhouse Steak.

In addition to great food, Smitty’s features two full bars – one in the party room, perfect for celebrating everything from anniversaries to reunions, holidays to rehearsal dinners – and the wine selection was awarded Platinum status by the Courier & Press. And one thing that definitely hasn’t changed since the Tavern days is the character of the building. Smitty’s just has personality, much like the good people running the show. Kimbrell and Slygh invite you to “come in and give it a whirl.” They’re sure they’ll win you over. – Thomas Ellis Editor’s Note: Romie Kimbrell won the Best Chef Award at the March of Dimes Signature Chefs Auction on 11/6 for his delicious Kraut Balls, Ham Rolls and Stroganoff. Smitty’s is located at 2109 W. Franklin St., 812-423-6280. For more information, visit smittysevansville.com. Find them on Facebook.

What ' s Cookin ‘

T

ucked away beneath the hustle and bustle of Main Street is The Vault, the newest addition to the downtown arts and entertainment scene. There aren’t many nightclub spots in Evansville that can claim a business lunch crowd and cater to Signature School while still managing to appeal to all other demographics after dark. For the 21 and over crowd, The Vault offers big screens for sports enthusiasts, a DJ and karaoke, live music from a plethora of local talent (including Lindsey Williams on Sunday nights), and most recently, vapor hookah nights on Wednesday and Saturday. Murals

329 Main Street, Evansville (812) 402-0133

by local artist Josh Shotwell decorate the walls, along with rotating exhibits from other artists. There are multiple lounges available, with privacy for business meetings by day or birthday parties by night, including the actual "Vault Room," where the money was kept during the times when it was, in fact, part of a bank. With a swanky, big-city ambiance and full bar, who even needs food? This is a query easily answered by The Vault’s eclectic menu. While situated in one of the more private rooms, perusing the many tasty options, it was clear to me that The Vault is not a run-of-the-mill pizza and wings joint. Yes, they have those items, but who else offers wings in 11 flavors, including mango and candied? I was also intrigued by the Asian flare of many dishes on the

menu. Not to be disappointed, I was greeted by the first dish, an appetizer called Chicken Rangoon. It’s a twist on the traditional favorite, golden deep-fried and stuffed with white meat chicken, cream cheese and fresh spinach. The mixture of creamy flavors and a crunchy texture paired with a delectable sweet & spicy sauce is quite the creation. The next dish, also an appetizer, was a hearty portion of Thai chicken skewers. These treats are obviously homemade, with hand-cut white meat chicken, battered in their own mixture, fried to perfection and drizzled, once again, with a special sauce. Be prepared for the sauce- you'll want to take a bucket of it home with you. For a lighter option with skewers, it’s also available as a salad served with The Vault’s house dressing, a tangy soy/ginger sauce. Hurtling towards stuffed, I couldn't resist the third fare: mozzarella sticks like you've never met. Straying from the standard breading, these cheesy creations are instead wrapped in a spring roll skin, making them crunchier and less greasy than your typical options, served with a side of garlicky marinara and garnished with a bit of lettuce and house dressing. It was easy to get excited about The Vault, especially considering owner Chris Calhoun’s genuine enthusiasm and warm hospitality. With a relaxing lunch atmosphere, completely reasonable prices and the promise of booming nightlife, it’s sure to be a new downtown favorite. – Whitney Patterson

local chef spotlight Ismael Aguilar of

Grilled Pork Chops: Fresh pork chops grilled and seasoned with herbs and spices. Served with dark cherry and vegetable stuffing, topped with apricot glaze. Garnished with grilled peach and cranberry relish.

Seared Scallops w/ Mushroom Ravioli: Seared dry scallops served over a Portobello mushroom ravioli. Finished with roasted red pepper coulis and balsamic reduction.

“I think that the industry is misled by the food shows, because they only show you the fun part of it; they don’t show you the reality of it. They make it look too simple – there’s a lot more to it.” If anyone is qualified to make such an assessment, it’s VenuWorks Executive Chef Ismael Aguilar. His comments not only ring true, they come from someone who has been on the frontlines of the busiest kitchens all over America. From serving five star meals to 2000 Democratic and Republican party members at a convention center in Iowa to prepping food for sold-out concerts at the Ford Center, his current culinary headquarters, Aguilar is hardly short on experience.

...those famous people become just another person in the building

Ismael Aguilar

Lamb Shanks: braised in red wine and dark ale beer sauce served over spaghetti squash. Roasted asparagus, mushroom-shaped red and Yukon potatoes.

Just hearing him describe the daily grind of leading the biggest VenuWorks operation is exhausting. But according to Food & Beverage Director Bernie Bilenki, he has the perfect attitude and temperament. “Ismael doesn’t yell in the kitchen. He teaches his co-workers how to cook – even the guy doing the dishes – to make them feel a part of the team. He is a perfectionist, but I have no problem with that and neither do the customers. It’s the end product that matters.” Aguilar and Bilenki have worked together off and on for years and trust each other implicitly, an absolute necessity in such an unpredictable profession. Their shared resume includes feeding former President George W. Bush, Hillary Clinton and some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry. Typical of Aguilar, he takes it all in stride. “After a while, all those famous people become just another person in the building,” he says. In truth, his food is the main attraction. Aguilar has a reputation for serving the highest quality product – from the hotdogs at the concession stands to exquisitely prepared lamb shanks (pictured above). All total, he and his crew prep and cook for 125-135 events a year at the Ford Center. In addition, they handle food and beverage at the Victory Theatre and cater programs at Mesker Park Zoo and various conventions and parties around town. Aguilar uses the healthiest ingredients and buys local products whenever possible, ever conscious of giving back to the community. Evansville may be a long way from his birthplace of Mexico City, but Aguilar seems right at home here and never more comfortable than when he’s in the kitchen. – Thomas Ellis

Indiana’s own Corey Cox will bring his humorously brash brand of country music to KC’s Time Out Lounge on December 19. With nearly ten thousand views on YouTube for his new single/video and lots of local support, he’s sure to draw a big crowd. “Wake Up Drunk” recounts a wild night of partying full of comedic moments that Cox sets to a mid-tempo strum. Lyrically, there’s a definite Eric Church vibe with lines like “It feels like forever since liquor and I got to spend some time together” and the chorus payoff “You know you had a good night when you wake up drunk.” Cox has a deep resonance to his voice and just the right amount of swagger. Don’t be surprised if he scores a major hit on the country charts soon and most importantly, don’t miss this opportunity to catch his act before he graduates to bigger venues. Editor’s Note: “Wake Up Drunk” was erroneously printed as “Woke Up Drunk” on the inside cover of the magazine. We apologize for the mistake. For more info, visit coreycoxmusic.com and follow him on Facebook. Call 812-437-9920 for show time. KC’s Time Out Lounge is located at 1121 Washington Sq. in Evansville.

Project 21 Scholarship Program Underage casino gambling (under the age of 21) has become a chronic problem in America as more and more young people place bets in commercial operations, graduating from low-level, private activity like waging money on sports with friends and playing the lottery. Such is the extent of the problem that many casinos have taken meaningful steps over the last several years to curb it. Here in the tri-state, Tropicana Evansville created a thoughtful approach to underage gambling: the Project 21 Scholarship Program. Part of an industry-wide initiative, the program gives students between the ages of 17 and 21 the opportunity to earn a $2000 scholarship by submitting a poster, video or written essay about the illegality of underage casino gambling. The three best entries are awarded a prize. Highly successful, Project 21 smartly combines art and education to get its point across in a non-threatening manner that truly connects with young people. Tropicana Evansville has awarded over $40,000 in scholarships to students from Mater Dei High School, Reitz High School, North High School, Harrison High School, Central High School, Evansville Day School, North High School, Gibson Southern and Pike Central High School. Entries for the Project 21 Scholarship Program may be submitted between January 6 and April 10 to Angela Patton, Tropicana Evansville’s Community Service Coordinator. Complete details are available at tropevansville.com.

UNITY TAXI SAFE RIDE PROGRAM Sponsored by WOODS & WOODS

Let Unity Taxi be your designated driver this New Year’s Eve. For the 17th year running, the local cab company is partnering with Woods & Woods Injury Lawyers to offer free cab rides. Both are locally owned businesses truly committed to keeping our community safe. From 11 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31 through 4 a.m. on Thursday, January 1, you can call Unity Taxi for a free cab ride in Evansville. Unity will have a virtual fleet of cabs at the ready for New Year’s Eve – up to 50 in the area – along with plenty of people at the call center. GM Bill Kramer promises that no other city will have faster or more reliable service. Tips to ensure that the Safe Ride Program runs smooth: • Be Patient. In most cases, a cab will arrive within 10 minutes but keep in mind this is the busiest night of the entire year. • Do not call early for an appointment or a set time. In other words, only call when you are ready to be picked up from the bar, etc. Unity will accept set times when you are headed to your party destination but not once you are there. • Do not call twice. Simply make one phone call and Unity will take care of you. Multiple calls can cause confusion and disrupt the flow of cabs. To request a ride home on NYE, call 812-421-9999 and mention the Safe Ride Program.

local talent Hoop Love Coach Abs Marie (Abbi Shoulders)

of Hoops of a Feather Six years ago, at a music festival in Chillicothe,Ill., 28-year-old Newburgh resident Abs Marie began her “hoop journey.” Out in the crowd she noticed some girls hooping to the beat and something just clicked. With no prior hula hoop experience – or dance experience for that matter – it seemed odd to be so completely drawn to the spectacle, but somehow Abs Marie knew that nothing would ever be the same. A teacher’s aide by day, most every other moment of her waking life is now consumed by what many consider to be a played-out child’s toy. In reality, the popularity of the hula hoop has grown exponentially over the last several years,

74 | December 2014

particularly with adults seeking a fun way to exercise. For Abs Marie, it’s a near obsession. But you can’t help but get swept up in her enthusiasm, especially when she excitedly explains that hoop dance can “really transform lives.” With a new business venture, Abs Marie is doing just that by sharing her unbridled “hoop love” with people around the tri-state. After becoming a Certified Hoop Love Coach over the summer, Abs Marie took a cue from her favorite Phish song, “Birds of a Feather,” and created Hoops of a Feather (the name ties in her jewelry business, Abbi’s Beads of a Feather). Overflowing with ideas, she currently holds hoop dance classes

and workshops and is also available for kids’ parties and performances. In addition, Abs Marie makes customized hoops – more than she’s got time for in a given week. It’s a lot of work for, and dedication to, a round piece of tubing, but as the Hoops of a Feather brochure notes, “15 minutes of hoop dance movement will help you increase flexibility, tone your muscles, improve blood circulation, fight stress and depression and, of course, lose weight!” Transform lives, indeed. – Thomas Ellis For more information about Hoops of a Feather, call Abs Marie at 812-499-4210. T

he name of a band can often speak volumes about its sound and that couldn’t be truer for Evansville’s Thunder/Dreamer.

“It’s symmetrical and fitting,” drummer Corey Greenfield explains. “It came to us randomly. Later, we came to find it actually has a coincidental meaning in Native American culture.” Quite simply, the name sets the stage for the band’s reverb-heavy, folk-Americana offerings – predominantly sleepy songs that worm their way into your subconscious note by note. Vocalist/ guitarist Steven Hamilton is the architect of this atmospheric approach; all Thunder/ Dreamer compositions begin life inside his head. “I’ve been writing songs for five or six years,” he says. “My style has moved from solo acoustic folk to a more in-depth style.” One listen to the band’s 2013 self-titled debut EP makes this evolution crystal clear. With the addition of Alex Wallwork on bass and Greenfield on drums (plus lead guitar by a former member), Hamilton’s original ideas take flight as the softer tones of his demos are given an edge and the framework around his melancholy vocals and sharp lyricism is strengthened on standouts like “Murderous Love” and “The Family Well.” Remarkably, despite the cohesive nature of the recording, the band had only played a “few low-key shows” prior to entering the studio. “We spent most of our time arranging the songs and rehearsing,” Greenfield says. “We only had so much time and money to spend and we were happy with what we ended up with. We got a lot of attention after the EP’s release, and it

seemed things were taking off for us.” Thunder/Dreamer’s post-EP trajectory truly went skyward with the acquisition of Zach Zint on keys, organ and piano. His presence is immediately felt on the full-length follow-up, Lonesome Morning, released back in July. “Piano and keyboards instead of a second guitar makes a huge difference – more dynamic possibilities opened up for us,” Greenfield explains. “We just hope that people will enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed creating it.” Each of the ten tracks on the album is its own little universe (almost half stretch out to five minutes or more) surrounded by open space where Hamilton’s weary voice hangs in the balance. “My Own Town” and the title track are prime examples of how the band interprets and expands upon the original idea, shaping and reshaping it until, as Greenfield notes, “the end result is greater than the sum of its parts.” The album also picks up the pace a bit with

soundboard

“Song for Laurent,” “Spring Mill Murder” and “What Would Your Lover Say?” acting as well-timed intermissions from the hazy slow-flow. In the age of processed iTunes singles, Lonesome Morning stands as a true musical document, a thematic collection of intellectualized songs. So what’s next for Thunder/Dreamer? “We’d like to continue to write and record and eventually tour, but without the help of a record label, these tasks can become financially crippling,” Greenfield says. “But we all love creating and so far, the more we do it, the more our sound seems to develop. It’s truly a spiritual journey that we all seem be taking together. For now, we will do some selective gigging and hope for the best.” – Thomas Ellis Follow Thunder/Dreamer on Facebook and visit thunderdreamer.bandcamp.com to purchase the EP or album. Bell’s Winter White Ale

Busted Knuckle Ale

Goose Island Festivity Ale

Daniel Knight • 3.5 Here’s a Belgian style seasonal brew from Bell’s of Michigan. It pours up a cloudy dull yellow color with a bubbly three finger head that settles to a light film for its duration. The aroma is of wheat, cloves and that unique yeast and coriander – typical of wheat ales brewed with Belgian yeast. The taste follows smell mostly with a more notable bready-ness early on and an interesting and desirable lemony finish. The mouth feel is light and refreshing – a great hot weather choice. I have no idea why they offer this beer as a winter seasonal, but they do, and it’s been a hit for over 10 years.

Daniel Knight • 3 Busted Knuckle Ale is a Nashville, Ind. brewery’s respectable execution of an English style porter. It pours up very dark brown and possesses an unstoppable frothy tan head (mine foamed over) that fades to a thin foam layer. The aroma is traditionally dominated by dark roasted malts, coffee, molasses and smokiness. As expected, especially with a brew of this type, taste follows the nose with the addition of a mostly bitter finish. The mouth feel is a bit thinner than I prefer – my only actual complaint about the brew. Give it a try, you’ll likely enjoy it.

Daniel Knight • 4.5 Festivity Ale is a holiday seasonal American Brown Ale. It is a pretty reddish brown color with light beige one finger head. The nose presents a pleasant combination of roasted malts, spiciness and hops. The taste follows the aroma with a delightful complex blending that hints of toffee and vanilla. The mouth feel is smooth and creamy and presents just enough hoppy-ness to keep boredom from setting in. With its tasty smooth personality I suggest that this would be a great brew to have around for sharing over the holidays.

Paul Bragin • 4 A thick nice white head forms on this beer when poured into a wheat beer glass and slowly disappears. The golden beer under it is cloudy and unfiltered. Wheat notes first highlight the scent profile. The wheat continues when drinking the beer at the beginning, but some fruit notes seem to rest on the tongue during the finish. This beer seems heavier than a traditional wheat beer but remains lighter than many heavier seasonal winter beers. Jabez Martinez • 4.5 This is a cloudy yellow beer. I enjoyed the sweet flavors of the yeast and the wheat. It is simple and clean and that is what I like about it. I always grab some of this around the Christmas season when it comes out. Follow us on twitter @

76 | December 2014

Paul Bragin • 4.5 A quickly disappearing tan head tops this pitch-black beer. The scent contains very rich notes of roasted malt followed by a hint of hops. Upon first drinking the beer, the malt notes continue, with the roasted characteristics coming back on the finish. This beer stays interesting due to its higher alcohol content, but it seems much lighter than a traditional stout or porter. Porter and stout lovers will definitely want to try this one.

Paul Bragin • 4.25 A thick off-white head crowns this beer and never completely vanishes. The underlying beer has a rich amber brown color. The scent seems to fluctuate between malt, spices and hops. Likewise, the spices seem to come first when tasting the beer, with malt and hops notes following and spices returning during the finish. This beer could pair well with holiday desserts while sitting in front of a roaring fire during the cold winter months.

Jabez Martinez • 4.5

Jabez Martinez • 4.5

This is a black beer that looks like a porter. I could taste the coffee and caramels, but it has a clean finish. It has a 7.2 ABV. I had never heard of this beer but noticed on the bottle that it is made in Brown County. Hopefully, we will see other offerings from this brewery.

/theliquorlocker

This is a nice, brown, amber-colored beer. I could taste the standard caramels but I could also taste a light fruity flavor. I thought this beer had a little spiciness to it, too. I noticed it had a 7.7 ABV which was masked by the flavors of the beer. Sometimes you can taste the alcohol but with this one, it was not as noticeable.

Shiner Holiday Cheer

Daniel Knight • 2.5 Holiday Cheer is a Dunkelweizen (means essentially “dark wheat”) style beer, and the bottle indicates that it’s brewed with peaches and pecans. It pours up dark and clear (reminds me of root beer) with a soapy off-white head that dissipates quickly. The nose is sweet and actually smells like fresh peaches. The flavor is sweet with mostly the sweet peaches and yeasty flavor. It’s very drinkable – like a soft drink. The bottle also indicates

that its ingredients include “natural (added) flavor and caramel (added) color.” Personally, I’m not into the augmented beers, but many will enjoy this brew. Happy Holidays! Paul Bragin • 3.5 A thick head with an off-white color forms on the deep amber beer. The scent of peaches used in the brewing process first comes to the nose. The first sip of the beer begins with malt flavor, but hops in the beer come through on the finish, followed by spices. This beer might make an excellent pairing with your favorite fruity pies, cakes or other baked goods this holiday season. Jabez Martinez • 3.5 I am usually a Shiner fan but this one is my least favorite so far. For a holiday beer, it is surprisingly made with peaches, and I could smell them immediately. It says it is also made with pecans, but I couldn’t taste them. I would think that a holiday beer would be made with spices and festive flavors. This is just peach beer.

December 20 – Straight No Chaser If the phrase “male a cappella group” conjures up an image of students in blue blazers, ties, and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivied campuses... think again. STRAIGHT NO CHASER are neither strait-laced nor straight-faced, but neither are they vaudeville-style kitsch. They have emerged as a phenomenon with a massive fan base, numerous national TV appearances and proven success with CD releases. The HAPPY HOUR TOUR comes on the heels of the release of Under the Influence, their fourth album release through Atlantic Records. The album features contributions from superstars Jason Mraz, Rob Thomas, Phil Collins, Dolly Parton and more! STRAIGHT NO CHASER is the real deal, the captivating sound of ten unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music that is moving people in a fundamental sense... and with a sense of humor. On the road, STRAIGHT NO CHASER has built a reputation as an unforgettable live act. Old National Events Plaza: 715 Locust St. 812-435-5770 or centre.evansvillegis.com. 8 p.m.

Hi, I'm Whitney, and I'm a Facebook-aholic. As a "millennial" – a word I despise, although I guess it's easier to say than "generation-y-er" – I am often at a moral crossroads when it comes to my exuberant love/hate relationship with modern technology, especially social media. Here we are, in 2014, with all of this information at our fingertips. Google it. Then talk about it on Facebook. Ahh, Facebook. Use it for work, to keep up with old friends, to have intelligent discourse with peers... and of course, use it to get fired from work, keep up with people you don't even know, to promote political ideals, share "news" articles that have no basis in truth, or post the 475th picture of your cat. Please don't get offended! We're all guilty, even me (*flips hair*). Ok, maybe I'm more guilty than some. So I challenge you. Don't think of it as a New Year’s resolution, but as a general life goal. Use technology to your advantage, but keep it positive. When you see a "friend" post something that you don't agree with, instead of getting into a dead-horse argument, log off. Go for a walk. Call your great-aunt in West Virginia. Support a political candidate or ideal? Volunteer for a campaign or a homeless shelter rather than trolling those who disagree with you. And for the love of Pete, don't post anything you wouldn't want your boss or grandma to see. Some things are meant to be private. You'd be surprised what's happening outside of the virtual world. All I want to know is who's coming with me? Signed, Whitney Patterson, Social Media Elitist

With so many charitable organizations doing such good work in the tri-state, there just simply aren’t enough pages in this magazine to shine a light on them all. Established in 1995 as a not-for-profit regional ballet school and performing arts company, the Children’s Center for Dance Education’s mission is to “introduce the children of the tristate area to the experience of dance through outreach performances, professional dance exposure and scholarships to the school. It is founded on the belief that all children regardless of race, creed or economic status should have the opportunity to dance expressively which fosters self expression, healthy body confidence and self discipline. “ Class options include Creative Movement (ages 3-4), Pre-Ballet (ages 3-5), Ballet 1 (ages 5-9), Ballet 2 (ages 8-15), Ballet 3 (ages 11 & up), Beginning Tumbling (ages 5 & up), Intermediate Tumbling (all ages), Tap/Jazz (ages 5 & up) and Adult Ballet plus Modern Dance and Pilates. The range of classes means that even adults can participate and learn right along with their kids. Maleficent (PG)

Walt Disney Pictures From fairy tale to book to animated feature, we all know the story of the beautiful blonde princess with the angelic voice, nurtured by fairies and ultimately put into a coma by the wicked, bitter sorceress, only to be awakened by “true love’s” kiss from the dashing prince. Minus the coma and omitted details from the original adaptations of the tales, there’s not a lot that separates this love story from so many others. Yawn. In the 2014 box-office smash, Maleficent, however, we get to hear another side of the story, because fairies don’t just spend their whole lives plotting the demise of another woman for no good reason, right? The ever-enchanting and frightening Angelina Jolie (swoon) is on the warpath, and she’s taking anyone who stands in her way along for the ride, including the sweet, fresh and surprisingly perceptive Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora. The big-screen version downplays Prince Phillip’s (Brenton Thwaites) role, but the special effects and action scenes are well done, with Juno Temple as the most adorable of the mothering fairies and a special cameo by Hollywood spawn, Vivienne Jolie-Pitt. Directed by Robert Stromberg of The Hunger Games and Pan’s Labyrinth, this yarn is not just for the kiddos. It’s heart-warming and giggle-inducing, with a surprising twist at the end and a fantastic score/soundtrack.

22 Jump Street (R)

Sony Pictures Entertainment A film sequel to a remake of a mildy successful and short-lived TV show? Worse things have been done. We watched and peed our pants laughing as undercover officers Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) went back to high school to weed out a big-time drug dealer. It was surprisingly (?) hilarious and a relatively apt representation of the demographic gap between high schoolers and 20-somethings, which brings us to the big question: can they do it again? The term sequel is cringeinducing enough, but when the movie is made with typically typecast young Hollywood, the fear is even stronger. This one, however, is worth a watch or two. It’s back to school for the boys (who still get accused of looking old in a collegiate setting). Hill’s specific ability to deliver jokes and his dry demeanor may be typical of his roles, but maybe it’s because he’s not acting as much as just being himself, which is totally fine. He and Tatum make a good team, unafraid to go all out for the sake of comedy, which is the strict genre of this movie. Although it will keep you laughing, there is a bit of cheese and corn when it comes to action scenes and Ice Cube’s acting (don’t worry, we still love you, Doughboy). Don’t expect any tear-jerking either, unless you get worked up over snippets of goofy bromance. There’s an allusion to yet another Jump Street at the end; guess we’ll see if they bleed it dry or if the third time will be another charm. – Whitney Patterson

the church

Further/Deeper The church’s uncompromising ways may have cost the band a share of the biggest market, predictably relegating them to one-hit-wonder status in the US (1988’s “Under the Milky Way”), but ultimately, the Aussie quartet has created a cult-worshipped back catalogue of sophisticated alternative pop that only seems more remarkable with time. Five years on from Untitled #23, a near-perfect album that garnered universal critical praise, the band is back, albeit without guitar genius Marty Wilson-Piper. Not to worry; Further/ Deeper not only lives up to expectations, it redefines the sound of the church. New member Ian Haug fits in seamlessly and together with longtime guitarist Peter Koppes, the two create a dense musical landscape that nearly buries singer Steve Kilbey, but slowly, almost magically, the hooks appear and sink in. Over an hour long, it’s an album that demands –and deserves – attention.

Stolen Remains 3 Song EP

Quite possibly the hardest rocking local band, Stolen Remains have shared the stage with some big names, including Pop Evil, Drowning Pool and Tantric. But frankly, the three tracks on this new EP are heavier than anything by said trio. “Away From Me” is pure aggression with Brandon Oost’s screams signaling utter discontent while the hyper riffing courtesy of guitarists Mike Van Bibber and Justin Rodenberg shows no mercy. “Unveiling” is a rarity in metal, both brutal AND catchy; the verses play on in your head for hours. Finally, “The Blackened Path” opens with Oost’s extended howl and never lets up. Extra points for the muscular production – check it out at reverbnation.com. -Johnny Fletcher

local band

spotli g ht

3D33P BAND FORMATIOn: 3D33P is an emerging hip-hop group from Evansville formed in late 2013 by three artists all wanting to create a new kind of local entertainment experience. The band is spearheaded by the group’s lead producer and rapper, Yung Kurt. 3D33P is rounded out by Kokane Piñata, notable for his masked persona and impressive lyrical abilities, and Iceberg, the group’s primary source of energy and ruthlessness. “All of our members come from a musical background which values energy and a ‘do-it-yourself’ attitude,” Yung Kurt explains of the band’s ethos. “But what we wanted to bring to the table was something which destroyed pretense and operated on the basis of pure entertainment. 3D33P does not preach. We simply reflect culture and carve out our own space in it.” RECORDINGS/INFLUENCES: 3D33P has released two albums in 2014, All Gods Now and Back at It, which can be found at 3d33p.bandcamp.com for free. The band’s sound is primarily influenced by southern hip-hop, trap, and drill and delivered with witty, raunchy lyrics over slapping beats to create unapologetic, party-oriented hip-hop. Many of their lyrics have a meme-etic quality which the band’s “cyber” image complements. PERFORMANCES: The group has performed once locally for the release of their first album earlier this year and will host a party at PG Café (1418 W. Franklin St.) on New Year’s Eve with local hip-hop artist Kelo and an unannounced special guest. Admission is free; more information can be found online or through PG.

cd reviews Andy Jones

Not So Much a Sin As a Mistake Self-Released The hard-to-peg local folk artist (and sometimes rapper) with insanely poetic lyrics and sweaty, thundering stage performances has done it again. In the past, with prior sporadic and always gritty recordings, the only way to truly experience Andy Jones was at shows. His recent release is scrubbed clean, giving us a chance to actually hear what he has to say with a huge dose of emotionally drenched vocals. The first track is lump-in-your-throat hopeful, with ruthlessly truthful lyrics and a haunting viola cameo by Stephen Lang. “I Don’t Love You” is an ode to all of the relationships you can’t shake but where love will never be enough, with lyrics like “we agreed that love is an abstract/ a notion that you can’t lay flat/ and stick up on a wall/ sooner or later it falls.” With a Simon & Garfunkel feel, it’s still a danceable track. The album is split into two parts, the second being a darker take on the subject matter of the first; sort of a biographical heartbreak timeline. His therapeutic release is laced with sometimes uncomfortable accusations and admissions – there’s even an allusion to a youthful affair with an older married woman – blanketed with unreasonably good musical composition. Glean what you will, but no one can accuse the man of being boring. Two thumbs up for feels, sir.

Ani DiFranco

Allergic to Water Righteous Babe Records The in-your-face femme-queen is back

at it with more than 32 flavors. Allergic to Water is Ani’s 24th release in 24 years of popularity. The Stephen King of organic anti-folk, she’s been pumping them out whether anyone’s been listening or not, keeping true to form while still managing to pick up at least a small demographic of non-reverent listeners. Quickly recorded in her NOLA home in part during the second trimester of her recent pregnancy, the album is overflowing and rambling, with obvious nods to her roots and eastern influences. DiFranco’s vocal stylings are distinguishable in a sea of copycats, and some tracks lead to an “aha!” moment when contemplating the batter of so many other female-led acts over the years that have followed her initial successes. The Joni Mitchell of millennials and always the agent provocateur, she calls for action in “Woe Be Gone,” demanding “raise your hand if you’re at peace right now/ in fact just stand up and take a bow/ everywhere you look just see damaged goods.” The guitar work on some tracks is just downright phenomenal and gorgeous with unoppressive percussion and more instruments than you can count on two hands. All the goose bumps and Stevie-swaying pour out during the jazzy “Harder Than It Needs to Be,” followed by a serving of humble pie on “Happy All The Time.” Don’t go digging out your Birkenstocks just yet, however. DiFranco’s grown now – no need to put on airs.

cd sidebar Various Artists

Ariel Pink

All Your Friend’s Friends K Records The craft that is mixing/collaboration of alternative rap/indie rock is no joke. To even fathom the hours of selections and production alone gives me a migraine. What doesn’t give me a migraine is this accumulation of underground rap and lo-fi. Ooooohwee. With the landscape turning to tundra, we need a rousing dance soundtrack to keep us energetic indoors, and it has arrived, kids. A much-welcomed departure from awful, overdone and insincere radio “rap,” this 19-track mix speaks to ears other than those belonging to suburban teens striving to appropriate a culture different than their own, rich with social commentary and slightly less misogyny than the maleborn fruit that is mainstream rap. Heddie Leone kills on “Good Bad Girl,” a seductive rap with goth overtones and feminist-shrouded explicit lyrics. Producer Smoke appears on two tracks, “Dancefloor on the Warpath” and “Welcome to Forever,” proving his talent goes further than just pushing the album out the door. K Records is a label that somehow manages to find some incredible talent that is verging on too likeable for the hipsters but still underground enough for us to wonder how they’re keeping all that shine to themselves (except Modest Mouse and Beck). Apparently the Olympia indie music scene is still going hard, and this is cold, hard, audible proof.

Flaming Lips

With a Little Help From My Fwends Warner Bros. Records Even as I’m holed up alone in my office with the speakers blaring, it’s difficult for me to contain what could only be described as a tween freakout, squeals and hand claps and everything. The Flaming Lips have covered the trippiest Beatles’ album of all time. On top of the obvious excellence, tracks feature acts from Grace Potter to Moby to Maynard James Keenan. Before I get too crazy on this, I’ll make a disclaimer that I’m actually a bigger FL fan than I am the Beatles, and before you stone me for that, give the album a listen. No matter what, this collaboration is out of any normal realm of imagination, proving that things can always get weirder. The title track features My Morning Jacket and glam-pop newcomers Fever the Ghost, and the sprawling reprise hosts Ben Goldwasser of MGMT. Maybe to the chagrin of diehard Beatles and FL fans alike, the playful and rousing pop brat Miley Cyrus contributes to two songs, with Moby on the whimsical “Lucy” and FL collab alums New Fumes on “A Day in the Life.” Not using the word “contribute” lightly, Cyrus’ guttural vocals with Coyne and the industrial twists on the former track are definitely interesting. The biggest deal for me is the latter, as it is my favorite; a sigh of relief is in order. – Whitney Patterson

Pom Pom 4AD It’s the late ‘80s, and your boss is making you watch a video about the company’s sexual harassment policy. You walk into the HR department and sit in an uncomfortable chair – the AC is a little too cold for you. A VHS is popped into a VCR, and your video begins. That corny music that you hear in the background, that’s what Ariel Pink sounds like. I promise it’s really good.

Run The Jewels

Run The Jewels 2 Mass Appeal Run The Jewels is the love child of Atlanta rapper Killer Mike and New York rapper/producer El-P. Though the duo have worked together in the past and created several great hip hop albums as solo artists, none of their previous albums are as extravagant as Run The Jewels 2. RTJ2 is a concise, clever album with enough bangers to keep the bass in your car bumping for days. It’s definitely a frontrunner for best hip hop album of the year.

Grouper

Ruins Kranky Ruins is the tenth album by Portland, Ore. artist Liz Harris under her stage name Grouper. Like much of her previous work, the album is dense, dark and packed with ambient droning waves that sooth the listener. No matter how loud you play the album, it still seems quiet and calming – perfect for rainy fall days or the fast approaching gray-skied winter. – Russell Finn
