The hilarious MGM film and Broadway smash hit, leGallY BloNde The Musical, is coming to The Centre on April 18 at 7:30 p.m.

t’s spring semester at UCLA. The Delta Nu sorority sisters are certain that their sorority president, Elle Woods, will soon be engaged to her boyfriend, the eminently eligible Warner Huntington III. But instead of proposing, Warner breaks up with Elle, explaining that he’s going to Harvard Law in the fall and wants someone more “serious” in order to fulfill his life plan. Heartbroken, Elle puts down the credit card, hits the books, and sets out to go where no Delta Nu has gone before: Harvard Law. But as she soon finds out, getting into Harvard Law was the easy part. She’s underestimated by her •6•

over-achieving classmates, kicked out of her first class and worst of all, learns that Warner has a new girlfriend! But Elle is one blonde who doesn’t take “no” for an answer. And along the way, learns that being true to yourself never goes out of style. In its first year on Broadway in 2007, LEGALLY BLONDE The Musical earned seven Tony Award nominations, ten Drama Desk Award Nominations, and an Outer Critics Circle Award. The musical also ranked in the top ten list of the most requested Ticketmaster “Arts & Theatre Events” for 2007 and received three 2009 Touring Broadway Awards in New York City. www.News4UOnline.com • April 2011

The show has also won awards for Best New Musical, Best Production Design and Best Choreography of a Touring Production. The musical has been created by a dean’s list of top-of-their-class Broadway talent, including Tony Award-winning director/choreographer Jerry Mitchell (Hairspray); composer and lyricist Laurence O’Keefe (Batboy) and Nell Benjamin (Sarah, Plain and Tall); book writer Heather Hach (Freaky Friday); and scenic designer David Rockwell (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels). LEGALLY BLONDE The Musical will take you from the sorority house to the halls of justice with Broadway’s brightest new heroine (and of course, her chihuahua, Bruiser). The verdict? P

rader-Willi Syndrome is a rare genetic condition, present at birth, that results in a number of physical, mental and behavioral disorders. Characteristics of Prader-Willi Syndrome include constant hunger, obesity, decreased muscle tone and mental capacity. This disease is caused by a missing gene on chromosome 15 and occurs in both males and females. But thanks to the efforts of the local organization, 911 Gives Hope, Prader-Willi is receiving the recognition and funding needed to continue to search for a cure. 911 Gives Hope’s fundraising efforts include events throughout the year that benefit both PWS and other local charities, with it’s largest event being Guns N Hoses, a charity boxing match between local Police Officers and Firefighters. We talked to Patrick Phernetton, executive board member of 911 Gives Hope, about this incredible event and how this organization became near and dear to his heart. N4U: You have a personal connection in raising money for Prader-Willi Syndrome, correct? Patrick Phernetton: Yes, my wife Lisa and I have a daughter, Mickey (12 years old), who has Prader-Willi Syndrome. What can someone expect who has never attended Guns N Hoses? Non-stop action. These guys (and girls) really go at it. There are 15 fights and each fight has 3 one-minute rounds. There is no dancing around or patty cake with this event; everyone goes all out. We also have an elaborate sound and light set up. The •8•

event is part boxing, part rock concert! Trust me when I say that this is no backyard wrestling event! How long has “Guns N Hoses” been going on in the Tri-State and how did it get started? This will be the 4th annual Guns N Hoses. The first one was held at The Coliseum. It sold out with two weeks to spare so we moved the event to Roberts Stadium, and we have been there ever since. Last year we drew close to 6,000 people, raising $89,000, and are expecting to raise even more this year. Before coming to Evansville, I was a Police Officer near www.News4UOnline.com • April 2011

St. Louis, MO. They’ve been doing Guns N Hoses for over 20 years. After seeing the event there, I knew this would be something people here would want to see, but even I was surprised at how popular and successful it has been. It’s important for people to know that 100% of the proceeds go directly to charity. None of the promoters, fighters or anyone else receives any compensation for the event. I think that makes this and 911 Gives Hope pretty unique. How are the proceeds being used to help with Prader-Willi? The money we raise is being placed in a fund to build and maintain a group home(s) in the Tri-state area for people with Prader-Willi Syndrome. Currently there are no such homes in the area to help support those who suffer from this terrible disease. We also donate money for research for a cure. What other organizations are benefited by the money raised at Guns N Hoses? Half of the money we raise goes towards Prader-Willi Syndrome. The other half gets divided up between other local charities that benefit children and/or people with disabilities. We have given money to over 40 organizations, such as Wish Upon A Star, Boys & Girls Club, Holly’s House, and Big Brothers Big Sisters, to name a few. There’s a complete list available on our website. Does 911 Gives Hope sponsor any other events throughout the year? We have Music for Mickey concerts. There will be a 5K “Hope

We do an event called “911 Gives Hope for the Holiday’s” where we collect toys to give to the local children’s wards in hospitals. This year we will hold the first annual “911 Gives Hope – Crashin for Kids,” a demolition derby at the Warrick County Fairgrounds on October 22nd. Get on your Bike and Ride

W

e’re big fans of the bicycle. Weather permitting, there’s just no better way to go from point A to point B while burning calories, saving cash and protecting the planet. More than 27 percent of Americans regularly take to their two-wheeler, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation, but Breck’s Bikes, located at 6219 Vogel Road, Suite 100 in Evansville, wants to get even more seats in the saddle! Cycle more, save gas and get healthy! Use these tips to set your wheels in motion.

3 reasons to push pedals You’ll slim down. Have fun, burn fat: Biking at a moderate to vigorous pace inside and outside the gym zaps about 500 calories per hour, says Pete McCall, an exercise physiologist for the American Council on Exercise in San Diego. Leaner legs and a firmer butt are also benefits of biking—ride on! You’ll fatten your wallet. It costs roughly $8,003 a year to own a car, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics.

You’ll reduce your carbon footprint. Fuel for thought: If you bike to work three days a week, you’ll save about 38 gallons of gas per year, says Heather Stephenson, cofounder of IdealBite.com, a website that offers daily tips on green living.

Spin safely How to crank up your cycling confidence (and avoid accidents) Read up on road rules. To learn the bike laws specific to your state (in most, you have to obey the same traffic laws, lights and signs that cars do), use the interactive map on the League of American Bicyclists website. Review your town’s department of transportation website for city-specific rules on cycling in parks and on sidewalks. Join a chain gang. Make yourself more visible to cars, pedestrians, cyclists and other park users by riding in a group, always in a single-file line. And dress in bright colors! Watch for doors. One of the biggest dangers for cyclists is “dooring” (when a driver opens a car door into the path of a bike). Ride at least 3 feet away from parked cars. Beware of intersections. Most car-bicycle crashes take place at intersections, so pay attention when approaching. Like a driver, you must yield to traffic that has the right of way. • 10 •

Beauty Boosters:

6 Natural Ways to Look Amazing for Years Like the old saying goes, “You are what you eat.” And health and beauty experts agree that what you eat can make you beautiful, both inside and out. According to Keri Glassman, nutritionist and registered dietitian, scientists have been pursuing the answer to ageless beauty for years. “There aren’t any foods that will turn back the clock -- at least, not that we know of yet.” Glassman says. “But there are foods that can make you look much better and slow down the aging process.” Check out these double-duty foods that have been proven to enhance your beauty, whether eaten or applied to your body directly.

Olive Oil

The food: “Besides being among the healthiest types of fats, olive oil tends to be rich in polyphenols, which aren’t just antioxidants,” explained Glassman. “They’re also antifungal and antibacterial agents.” Dr. Howard Murad, associate clinical professor of medicine (dermatology) at UCLA’s Geffen School of Medicine and founder of Murad Skincare Inc., agreed. “Essential fatty acids and other healthy fats keep us hydrated, supple, youthful and beautiful.” “The right fat in the right amount will feed your skin, as well as your brain and your cellular membranes, like no other nutrient.” Murad suggests three to four servings a day of this good fat. The mask: “Eating olive oil is great, but you can put it right on your skin, too,” said Glassman. “Mix it with a little avocado, and leave it on for 10 minutes. It’s so nourishing, you can almost feel your skin drinking it up.”

Honey

The food: “Nature’s bacterial agent.” said Glassman. “When eaten, its antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties can protect your body.” And daily consumption of this sweet additive boosts the level of polyphenolic antioxidants in the blood, improving blood flow to the skin. The mask: Honey is good for treating acne and reducing redness. It’s also a natural humectant, which means it keeps all the water you’re drinking in the right places. According to The Bastyr Center for Natural Health, the teaching clinic of Bastyr University in Seattle, honey contains anti-inflammatory properties that help to decrease pain and the appearance of scars. Here’s Glassman’s recipe for Sweet Honey Cleanser: Mix 1/2 teaspoon honey, 2 teaspoons yogurt • 12 •

and 2 teaspoons brewed green tea. Leave on for about 10 minutes.

Papaya

The food: “The rejuvenating enzymes and vitamin A found in papaya can benefit many skin issues and can be safely used by all skin types, including those with sensitive skin or rosacea,” said Louisa Maccan-Graves, celebrity beauty expert and author of “Hollywood Beauty Secrets: Remedies to the Rescue.” It also contains the skin-loving vitamins C and E. “Besides promoting healthy cell turnover and aiding in the formation of collagen and elastin, vitamin C is key in countering the effects of sun damage,” Glassman said. Vitamin E is also vital because it’s an important way the body wards off sun damage, such as age spots and wrinkles. The mask: “Papaya helps exfoliate skin, repairs sun damage, fades age spots, and helps smooth the complexion,” said Maccan-Graves. “It’s nature’s Retin-A.” She offered this recipe: Cut a slice of ripe papaya, remove the seeds and pulp, then rub the inside peel on a clean face, focus on lines around the mouth and eyes, crow’s-feet, thinning temples, neck and hands. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse with tepid water. Do twice weekly.

Coconut

The food: According to the Coconut Research Center in Colorado Springs, CO, the coconut has numerous beauty benefits, including supporting the natural chemical balance of the skin, relieving dryness and flaking, and protecting the body www.News4UOnline.com • April 2011

from harmful free radicals that promote premature aging. Coconut also improves the absorption of the calcium and magnesium, which are crucial for a gorgeous grin. The mask: The oil in coconuts can help form a chemical barrier on the skin to ward off infection. Glassman’s “Tropical Skin Rejuvenator” mask is as follows: Mix 1/2 teaspoon coconut oil, 1/8 cup ripe mango and 1/8 cup ripe papaya. Leave on for about 10 minutes.

Pineapple

The food: When eaten, pineapple contains a large dose of vitamin C, a necessary element to fight off free radical damage. The percentage of water in pineapples is nearly 90%, which is essential for youthful looking skin. “Vibrant health from the inside out lies in maintaining strong cells that can attract and keep water the way younger cells do,” Murad explained. “So if you can repair your cell membranes while attracting water nutrients to them, you can fight aging, as well as disease.” The mask: Pineapple contains natural fruit enzymes that will exfoliate your skin, leaving the complexion smooth, with a natural glow. The web site beauty-soap-and-bubbles.com offers this recipe for homemade pineapple mask: Puree one slice of pineapple, then mix in a bowl with 2 tablespoons yogurt and 4 tablespoons cornmeal. Leave on for five minutes. “Exfoliating three to four times a week will provide you with fewer breakouts, a brighter, healthier complexion and improved tone and texture of the skin,” added Murad.

Rosemary

The food: Whether eaten or used topically, the fragrant oils of this plant stimulate circulation and act as an anti-irritant. It’s also been known to help fight acne, clear blemishes and moisturize dry skin. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that rosemary can also neutralize free radicals (harmful molecules that cause premature aging, as well as diseases). And according to the blog on Sephora.com, rosemary oil boosts hair growth, while improving texture, shine and thickness. The mask: Glassman offered the recipe for her “Go Green Face Scrub:” Mix 1/2 teaspoon rosemary, 1/4 avocado, 1 teaspoon parsley and 2 tablespoons kosher salt and apply to face. Leave on for about 10 minutes. April 2011 • Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309

CLUTTER 101 | Staying Clutter-Free This is the second part to our Declutter Series, which began in March’s issue. There’s a belief among the clutter-afflicted that if they could only get rid of all the clutter, just once, the clutter problem could be solved. It’s not quite so simple. True, it’s easier to maintain a decluttered environment than it is to achieve it, but there’s more to the problem than the mere absence of clutter. Clutter doesn’t arise out of nothing. If everyone in the family dumps book bags, briefcases, handbags and clothing on the living room sofa, clearing the sofa today isn’t going to prevent tomorrow’s deluge. Twenty-four hours later, the clutter has returned. So decluttering alone will not cure the real problem: the lack of family launch pads, and the failure of family members to use them. Once clutter has been banished, the real work of change begins. To conquer clutter once and for all, focus on these clutter prevention ideas:

Home, Home On The Range

A primary cause of clutter? It’s the homeless... mail, toys, or newspapers. Without a home, common household items wander, lose their way, meet up with bad companions and make the transition to clutter. Establish good homes for your stuff. Newspapers may be folded and stacked on a coffee table before being read, then given shelter in a box while they await recycling. Devote space to use as a launch pad for each family member: a location for purses, school papers, back packs and briefcases. Give paperwork proper files so it never has to huddle in lonely stacks on kitchen counters. With a home to go to, good stuff will never become bad clutter.

Establish Clutter Preserves

There’s no such thing as clutter-free living. Even the tidiest among us still tosses clothing on floors from time to time. Accept reality by establishing dedicated clutter preserves. Like wildlife preserves, these are limited areas where clutter may live freely, so long as it stays within boundaries.

• 14 •

In a bedroom, one chair becomes the clutter preserve. Clothing may be thrown with abandon, so long as it’s thrown on the chair. A kitchen junk drawer can house vitamin bottles, rubber bands, clipped recipes, expired coupons and shopping receipts unwelcome outside their clutter preserve. Children may use a plastic laundry basket to corral stray playthings in bedroom or family room. A large magazine bucket in the living room is fair game for catalogs and magazines, as long as they can fit inside the bucket.

Build Good Habits To Bust Clutter

Focus on stuff-related household activities to get a handle on the clutter process. Build good habits to stop the tendency to create clutter. For example, establish a “returning home” habit or routine. As you shut the back door, hang the car keys on a hook just above the light switch. Remove jackets and coats two steps inside the house, and hang them on the coat rack. Place purses or briefcases in the launch pad area next to the coats. www.News4UOnline.com • April 2011

Bringing in the mail? No more dumping it any old place to review the day’s catch. Instead, form a new habit: sort mail over the trash can, dumping the junk, then file it quickly in a plastic pocket filing unit on the adjoining wall. Habits, once adopted, kick in as a mindless protective device. To stay clutter-free, work hard on new clutter-busting habits as you declutter.

One In, One Out

For more serious clutter contenders, adopt a one-in, one-out rule. From here on out, when you buy a new pot,

April 2011 • Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309

shirt or magazine, an old pot, shirt or magazine must be discarded, recycled or donated. One-in, one-out keeps the level of stuff below the clutter point by limiting total numbers. Observing the rule can also save money. Charmed as you may be with that colorful Italian pasta bowl, buying takes on new importance when one of the old bowls will have be discarded as a result.

Outsource It

Finally, focus on out-of-house resources to whittle down the sheer number of things that enter your home. For example, there’s no need to buy, keep, sort and store back issues of magazines once you realize that the public library provides this very service for free! Rent, don’t buy, paint sprayers and specialty tools for home repair projects. Swap garden tools or hobby equipment with a neighbor. Borrow books, CDs, and videos from the library or video rental store. The less you permit stuff to get a foot in the door, the less clutter will grow in your organized home!

How to Clean Windows Like a Pro outside

Ideally, windows should be washed twice a year, but it’s a job most people don’t look forward to. Part of what makes it such a chore is that homeowners insist on doing it with wadded-up paper towels or newspaper, spray cleaner, and a ton of elbow grease.

“All that rubbing isn’t a good idea,” says Derek Masterson, owner of Clear Window Solutions, Inc. in Evansville. “You’re just moving dirt around from one spot to another and putting a static charge on the glass, which attracts dust and dirt. As soon as you finish, the window looks dirty again.” According to Masterson, it’s easier and more effective to clean glass like the pros do: with a squeegee and a few other readily available tools. The techniques aren’t complicated and the results may surprise you. However, if “you don’t do windows”, be sure to call at Derek (812) 454-5485. They’ll be sure to leave your windows sparkling, without hurting your budget!

1. Wash with a strip applicator

Picture windows call for large tools. The long cloth head of a strip applicator soaks up a lot of soapy water and knocks dirt loose without scratching the glass. For a cleaning solution, use just a squirt of dishwashing liquid in a bucket of warm water—the less suds, the better.

2. Wipe clean with a squeegee

Starting at the top left, pull the squeegee over the soapy pane in a reverse-S pattern (left-handers start at the top right). At the end of each stroke, wipe the squeegee’s blade clean with a lint-free rag. Cloth diapers or old linen napkins are perfect for this task.

3. Dry off remaining drips

Remove any water remaining on the edges of the glass with a damp, wrung-dry chamois, which soaks up wetness without leaving streaks. Dry the windowsill with a rag.

4. Get rid of stubborn spots

Over time, hard-water runoff from masonry or rain falling through metal window screens leaves stubborn mineral stains on glass that normal washing can’t erase. So after a regular cleaning, wet the glass and gently “superclean” it either with fine 000 steel wool (if the panes are small) or with the cleansing powder Ettore Scrub Off, which contains oxalic acid. (Other brands of powder may scratch the glass or fail to remove stains.) Mix the powder into a paste on a wet towel, rub away the stains, then rinse and squeegee the glass twice to remove the residue. But even with that treatment, the staining generally comes back in about six months. • 18 •

To get rid of stains for good, Masterson recommends an application of 3 Star Barrier Glass Surface Protectant, a clear polymer coating. “After the stains are gone, just put the coating on with a strip applicator and squeegee it off,” he says. Protection against staining is permanent, as long as the polymer is reapplied after each regular cleaning.

For most people, tax time is for worrying about getting audited and hoping for a refund that will help make ends meet. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Take this time to plan how to have more savings for your golden years. There are more ways to save for retirement than just taking advantage of your company’s 401(k), which today, is almost the equivalent of stuffing your savings in a mason jar and burying it under your porch. People need to get creative and really take advantage of all the different ways the law allows you to save money now, earn more money tomorrow and have more to retire on later. • Say no to higher health insurance premiums and start a Health Savings Account with a highdeductible policy.

finanCe

TAX TIPS | To help You Grow Your Nest Egg

The maximum deductible contribution is $6,150 for 2011 for families and $3,050 for single coverage. Distributions are tax free if used for medical expenses, and balances can be carried over from year to year. Premiums on a high-deductible health insurance policy are typically half the cost of a traditional policy. • Taxpayers that are age 70 ½ with IRAs can give money directly to a charity from their IRA in 2011. Making charitable gifts this way keeps the taxable income off your tax return and this could lower the amount of your Social Security benefits that are subject to tax. The average tax refund for 2009 was $3,035. If this was saved each year for 30 years it could provide a significant part of your retirement income. Better yet, reduce your tax withholding at work by $253 per month and save the same amount monthly. Monthly compounding instead of annual compounding grows even faster. • Do not defer your income in a 401(k) plan if you are in a 15% tax bracket unless your employer matches the amount you save. Place the money in a Roth IRA instead. Tax brackets will probably never be lower than they are now and there’s a good chance they will be higher. Distributions from a Roth IRA will be tax free in retirement. • Money saved outside of a retirement account should be invested in stock mutual funds. Most of the earnings on stock funds are either in the form of qualified dividends or long-term capital gains. Both types of income are taxed at 0% in a 15% tax bracket and a maximum of 15% in higher tax brackets. • Tax-free funds currently offer returns comparable to taxable funds. The average yield on intermediate taxfree fund was 3.6% in December versus an intermediate taxable fund at 3.9%. April 2011 • Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309

• If you took money out of a retirement account before age 59 ½, you will owe tax on the distribution, but you may be able to avoid the penalty. There are six exceptions to the penalty. Find out if you qualify for any of them. The law provides many ways to save money, so while those filing the quick and dirty tax forms may get a quick refund, you may be shortchanging yourself in the future. • 19 •

Word took over as the owner after her aunt retired on October 2, 2009; a date which is now dubbed “Amy-versary” at the bar. When it came to taking over the reins, it was important for her to keep the original appeal of the establishment, but knew big changes were in order including the menu and location hours. After taking a seat at the bar, I could see Word’s handy work in the extensive menu. I was amazed that all items were available the entire time the establishment was open. Breakfast items for dinner, wings at 7 a.m. when they open; you name it, you it can get it at any time. With a food list this massive, I had to ask the staff for some direction. The bartender Jess, already attentive to my needs, was quick to answer all my

questions and lead me in the right direction. The turkey club was by far the most popular suggestion, followed by the wings and the pizza; sounds like a full dinner to me! First item up was the wings, with a sampling of three sauces. These were the biggest wings I have ever seen! This is because they buy their wings fresh and never freeze them, keeping all the delicious juices inside, keeping them at their fullest plump potential. I let my dinner companion take the lead on those bathed in the “Ass Kickin” sauce as I dived into one dipped in the Sweet & Spicy. A perfect blend of sweet and spicy, I was tempted to order more. What surprised me the most out of all of the choices was that the cheesy garlic sauce is homemade in the bar. Used on “Amy’s Favorite Pizza,” this is like a thick Alfredo sauce that clings to the wings, infusing and coating them with flavor. Delicious! Just as we were finishing the wings, the turkey club sandwich came out paired with seasoned fries. Piping hot, the fries were crunchy on the outside, and soft on the inside, just the way I like them. The sandwich was huge. Three layers of bread,

bacon, turkey, and tomatoes were piled high. I had to use a knife and fork just to taste all the components without making a mess. Finding myself already getting full from my first two courses, Amy’s Favorite Pizza arrived. It’s smothered in Parmesan garlic sauce and topped with fresh spinach, tomatoes, and chicken. Cheesy and crispy, this pizza is a great change of pace for those who always order pepperoni, and definitely of new favorite of mine. As my friend and I were discussing how much we enjoyed the food and how we were sure to make Lamasco a new favorite spot, the everalert Jess sweetened the deal by letting us know that their specials include a daily plate lunch special, half-price large pizzas on Sunday’s and beer & wing specials all weekend long. Even better, their entire menu is also available for carryout. But that’s not all. Ever expanding, Lamasco recently added catering to their business. Look for delivery (with alcohol!) which is set to begin by early summer. So, if you’re looking for a delicious change of pace, you’ve got to visit Lamasco Bar & Grill, located at 1331 W. Franklin Street, just off the Fulton Ave. exit on the Lloyd. Or give them a call at (812) 437-0171 for carryout! Open Monday – Saturday at 7 a.m., and Sunday’s at 10 a.m. – Alison Sigman www.News4UOnline.com • April 2011

localchefspotlight hef Doug Rennie, Owner of Just Rennie’s Cookies and Just Rennie’s Catering, knows a thing or three about being in the kitchen. Just the mention of his name and one thing instantly springs to mind: cookies. But cookies are only one of the many delights in his culinary arsenal. Join us as we talk to this local culinary legend in this month’s “Chef Spotlight.” N4U: What is your background in the restaurant business? I’m a graduate of the prestigious school, The New England Culinary Institute, and started my career at the Château Normandy in Indianapolis. I then interned at both the Radisson Plaza Hotel in Indianapolis and the Hotel Meridian in Houston. I’ve also served as Lead Cook & Banquet Chef at the Doubletree Hotel in Houston and have been Executive Chef at Ashley Grill and Real Bread Company in Evansville, and Executive Chef at Rolling Hills Country Club and Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh. And now I’m owner and Executive Chef of Just Rennie’s Catering and owner of Just Rennie’s Cookie Co. What is your earliest food-related memory? Getting started at a young age in the food industry creating cakes for special occasions, and seeing how happy people were at their parties. How would you describe the menu at Just Rennie’s? The food at Just Rennie’s is food made from scratch and using only fresh, high quality & natural ingredients. It is food that people can relate too, but with a little twist. What do you feel is your biggest accomplishment as a chef? My biggest accomplishment of all is pleasing my customers on an every day basis. We always strive for perfection.

It beats out any awards that I’ve received in the past from BEST Chef to BEST Caterer. I am very proud though of my wife Marla who just received the BEST Chocolate Chip Cookie Award from Evansville Living Magazine. She also started her own Just Rennie’s Cookie Co. that ships to all 50 States! If anyone needs cookies shipped, please go to justrennies. com. We have new clients from Chicago, Boston, New York, Texas, & California. It’s really nice that her cookies are getting national recognition throughout the United States. If you could create a perfect meal – drinks appetizers, entrees, even a desert, what would it be? My perfect meal is sitting down with Marla on our beautiful patio enjoying a nice glass of red wine, sushi, grilled filet and yellow tuna, and JUST RENNIES COOKIES of course! – Alison Sigman

Be sure to try the Just Rennie’s lunch menu Monday – Friday 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at 102 SE Fourth Street, Evansville. (812) 401- 8091. And don’t forget your cookies! April 2011 • Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309

HaDi sHrine opens BanQueT FaCiliTy

Last month, the Hadi Shrine Temple unveiled a new facet to their organization: Hadi Catering. With this addition, they also debuted a new banquet room to satisfy the needs of their guests. Overlooking the Ohio River in beautiful downtown Evansville, the banquet facilities at the Hadi Shrine Temple are a perfect destination for any event, whether it’s a corporate luncheon or a wedding reception. We talked to Chad Keown, Food and Beverage Manager about this new venture. Why did the Hadi Shrine decide to expand into event hosting and catering? The Hadi Temple has always had catering and event hosting available to its members, but with the economy the way that it is and the competitiveness of the food and beverage business, we had to move into the public sector to survive. What does the Hadi Shrine offer that is unique or special? Red Fez Catering at the Hadi Temple is a full service caterer and banquet location. We take a lot of the work out of reception set-up, teardown, coordination, etc. Outside of decorating, the Red Fez handles all other aspects of event operations. We also specialize in personalized service that you will not find anywhere else. With a background in private clubs for many years, the Catering staff at the Red Fez will provide you with everything you need to have a memorable event. Need help planning the special event? Red Fez Catering offers specialized menu planning and in house DJ services too. Give them a call at (812) 423-4285 or visit their new facility at 6 Walnut Street in Evansville. • 36 •

magine the breathtaking beauty of some of the best cirque artists in the world performing on the same stage with a full symphony orchestra. The Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra brings this magical experience to the Victory Theatre with Cirque de la Symphonie! We talked to Executive Director, Glenn Roberts, about this month’s performance. N4U: Music and dance naturally have strong ties with each other. How do the cirque artists interpret the separate pieces of music into motion and movement? Glenn Roberts: They train themselves to match the overall “rhythm” of their routine with the ebb and flow of the musical selections. Unlike ballet where a dancer’s every move is tied measure by measure to the music, the cirque acrobats follow a more general contour of the music, and then time their “Ta-Da!” moments to coincide with the climaxes in the music. Being such a visual program, how do the orchestra and the performers share the stage? The staging logistics were the first challenge we had to work through. But fortunately the stage at the Victory Theatre is very deep, so sharing space with the performers is not an issue. This production will look very different than most. The orchestra will be set further back than normal to allow room in front of the stage for the acrobats and strongmen. We’ll have a special rigging to allow aerial acrobats to perform and “float” above the first rows of the audience. As a special bonus, we’ll utilize the orchestra pit as special seating for audience members, who will get to see the aerial artist perform directly overhead. This program calls upon more contemporary pieces of music, including works from the movies “Star Wars” and “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” which offer more energetic pieces. Was this taken into consideration when compiling the selections for the program?

The music selections are driven by the Cirque de la Symphonie company and based upon which acrobats are selected to perform. The inclusion of the “Star Wars” and “Harry Potter” scores certainly add to the excitement, but the majority of the music is actually straight from the great romantic composers. The audience will be thrilled by some of the most heartpounding, passionate music ever written. I’d bet it will be familiar to the listeners as it has been used in movies, television shows, advertisements, cartoons, you name it! There has been increasing popularity for cirque acts over the last 5 years; was this a driving force for this program? Absolutely. The enormous popularity of Cirque du Soleil has spawned a great interest in this art form, and the pairing of great acrobatic talent with great symphonic music is just too good to pass up! This particular program is selling out across the country, so naturally we couldn’t resist catching this wave here in Evansville. Is there a particular moment from the concert that you are most excited about that is sure to wow the audience? This show is riddled with “wow” moments – in fact, we should have oxygen available to help folks catch their breath. But if I have to choose, don’t miss the aerial hoop routine, and Jarek & Darek, the Strongmen at the end of the show. (How do they do that!?) Cirque de la Symphone will be performed on Saturday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 10 at 2:00 p.m. at the Victory Theatre. vansville native Brian Mullins has been a part of the music scene since he was 15 and picked up his first pair of drumsticks. The beat man for many local bands including wellhello, he now rocks out with the Cold Stares. Winning the Nashville regional of the Hard Rock Café’s “Ambassadors of Rock: Battle of the Bands” last year gave the band great exposure, but it was coming in third place nationally that has done even more. We put Brian under the microscope to see what makes this drummer beat. Please give readers a quick summary of what’s going on with you musically these days. I’m the drummer for The Cold Stares. We are a duo, and my band-mate (Chris Tapp) writes some great songs. I also teach 15 drum lessons per week. My youngest student is 7, and my oldest is 70. Some days it is so rewarding! Who are three artists you’ve looked to for inspiration? I don’t know that there are three artists that I love everything they ever did. There probably are, but I think most musicians are inspired by a performance, or a song, or the way a record sounds - musical moments, rather than an artists’ career or catalog. Other band mates have inspired me, also. Everyone I have played music with has exposed me to new stuff. What three albums would you have to have with you on a desert island? I’m going to cheat and pick double

albums! Miles Davis - Bitches Brew Frank Zappa - Joe’s Garage. Led Zeppelin- How the West Was Won What was the first album you purchased with your own money? Van Halen - 1984. My brother and I co-owned it. I remember we had it on vinyl. If your pre-gig routine had a theme song, what would it be? I need to get the routine before I get the theme song. Sometimes there is a band room, or a place to be, but usually not. I usually talk to family and friends, maybe change clothes in the car...I’m usually not sure what to do with myself. It’s a good kind of nervous. If you could travel through time what music scene in history would you most want to be part of? The Roaring 20’s! The spread of radio, and records, and the amount of live music make that era a musicians

dream. The 60’s would be neat too, but I’ll leave that to some other time-traveler. What’s the plan for this year and beyond? Where do you see yourself this time next year? The plan is to keep making music. The Cold Stares are going to record another EP soon, and we have a few other things in the works. I hope I have a different address this time next year. I also hope I’m behind a drum set, either playing, or giving a lesson. here are worse ways to spend your time, for sure.

Keep up with all the latest news on the band by visiting their website at www.coldstares.com. – Alison Sigman • 58 •

creativespotlight Free Spiritz

T

here’s a fresh mix of music wafting from The Deerhead Sidewalk Café on a chilly Friday evening. And it’s coming from a hard working four-piece band, who in reality are actually just like one big family.

Free Spiritz is comprised of Theophilus (Theo) Akai, an outstanding guitarist, and friendly, cool guy with an irrepressible “Magic Johnson smile”; bass powerhouse and all around showman, James “Jimi Jam” Johnson; Max Wilkinson, laying down the beat on drums; and the silky smooth vocals of Zakia Perry, who is also the lyricist of this fantastic group. Fate must have brought these folks together, because they certainly logged many miles in finding each other. Theo hails from Ghana, West Africa, and with the encouragement of his father he began playing guitar in church. When his dad’s theologian work brought him to Evansville, Theo immersed himself into the local music scene. In his spare time, he is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Biology at USI. Jimi is from Erie, PA and has played in numerous bands over the years and paid his dues on the Chitlin’ Circuit” before settling down here in Evansville. Zakia was born and raised in Chicago and started singing at an early age in church choirs and school musicals. She spends her share of time laying down vocal tracks at various recording studios. Theo, Jimi and Zakia played together briefly in a cover band called Rich Music in 2009, but the drive to write and perform original music led to changes and in 2010 they added Max on drums (the lone Evansville native in the band), and have been writing, gigging and recording ever since. Max sums it up: “I went down to jam with them, and it was magic from note one. We just felt each other immediately, which is kind of rare these days. I saw them on YouTube and told a friend of mine that I wanted to meet them and jam with them. They needed a drummer and the rest is history.” I think Max echoes the feelings of the other members when he says “Sometimes when you don’t quite expect it, something just clicks,” and this group of musicians and their respective loved ones are indeed just like one big family. They celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and get together to grill out, hang out, and always write music, wherever they happen to be. Their music, as they like to say, is a “melting pot.” You’ll hear shades of R&B, Funk, Caribbean, and African influences in their songs. In the spirit of one of the all time greatest singer/ songwriters and one of the coolest cats around, Mr. Bill April 2011 • Call for Advertising Information (812) 962-1309

Withers, Free Spiritz is committed to their ideals, goals and original work, and resist the temptation to do covers, which can be a double edged sword with many club owners still preferring a cover band sound. Well on their way to accomplishing their number one goal, they are currently in the studio recording their freshman CD, titled “Twisted Reality”. One of the best cuts from the CD is a crowd favorite, “Down For You”. I concur with Max’s thought that “The band is a breath of fresh air for the Evansville music scene...a virtual “melting pot” of musical styles.” Catch them live and you’ll see a high energy show performed by well seasoned musicians which from song to song will make you want to either polish some belt buckles, or shake your moneymaker! One final point of note is that this is a band that preaches and promotes a drug free lifestyle. “Get high on life, stay true to your dreams and commitments and stay on your directional path,” are words that the members of Free Spiritz live by that we can all embrace. And in the words of Zakia, “Expression is the root of everyone’s individuality. How you express yourself and how you live life details your legacy. My legacy at this point shines through my creativity and my children. That is the best legacy anyone could leave.” Be sure to check out this great band and support original music in Evansville! – Mark McCoy • 59 •

Lamasco’s Amy Rivers-Word Talks Blues

It seems that local venues are increasing the amount of Blues-based talent they are bringing in, which is obviously great news for local Blues fans. In fact, Lamasco Bar and Grill, is featuring several Blues-centric bands in April. We talked to Amy Rivers-Word about who and what to expect. News 4U: You’ve got a healthy dose of Blues coming to Lamasco this month; can you run down the list? Amy Rivers-Word: The Matt O’Ree Band is coming April 11th. The Delta Saints are on the 13th. The 22nd & 23rd, JoBu is playing. They do quite a lot of Blues. The Beat Daddys are back April 30th. Then, we’ve got another new guy, from Indianapolis – Cootie Crabtree – his is kind of a Blues, Folk, Indie... N4U: Americana/Roots? ARW: Yeah, that’s a great word for it. Cootie Crabtree is here April 27th. N4U: In addition to bringing in outside acts, you continue to support local musicians. You welcomed The Library Trio in March, we mentioned The Beat Daddys, and Blind Dog Gatewood was here not too long ago, too. ARW: Most months it’s half-and-half. We’re supporting local musicians, and we’re bringing folks in. It’s great. And when we bring in these out of town bands, half of our crowd is local musicians! We are a community here, and we’re going to look at it as such, and we’re going to take care of each other, in a way. JL: Then there are the Tuesday night open jams, which are open to ALL musicians of ALL genres. ARW: All musicians of all genres! That’s kind of morphed into its own, cool thing. On any given night you can see guys and gals from 10, 15 different bands jamming together. • 60 •

JL: I know that in addition to other genres, you’re a fan of the Blues, as well. ARW: Absolutely! JL: Who are some of your favorites? ARW: Etta James. Stevie Ray Vaughan. Allman Brothers. Nowadays, I listen to so many more of the groups that are here. Aaron Kamm and the One Drops, even though they’re technically Reggae, he’s one of the most magnificent Blues guitarists! JL: And you play music. Are there any Blues tunes in your set list? ARW: I do some. I’m really kind of more Folk-y than anything. For me, Blues is personified in so many different types of music, so there are a couple. JL: Anything else new with you? ARW: The new website is up. www.lamascobarandgrill.com. Now with the website we can do more with the calendar: links, contact info, if there’s a door charge, etc. – a tremendous amount of information. Log on to www.fulltimeblues.com & News4UOnline.com for more of my conversation with Amy Rivers-Word. “Johnny Full-Time” John Luttrell is the Host/Executive Producer of “Full-Time Blues Radio,” which airs Saturdays, Noon - 2:00 p.m. on 91.5 WUEV-FM. He also owns and runs www.FullTimeBlues.com. – John “Johnny Full-Time” Luttrell www.News4UOnline.com • April 2011

Bell’s Kalamazoo Stout (Comstock, MI)

Todd Zachritz: 4.0

Billed as a stout brewed with brewer’s licorice, this one pours a deep black with a khaki/tan head of foam. Scent is of dark rum, coffee, and burnt licorice. Flavor is pretty middle-of-the-road, and not too out-there, but with hints of candy and rum – a pleasant and unusual mix. A complex and suble stout, with a unique bit of nuance. Very enjoyable, indeed.

an Imperial Stout. I really enjoyed this beer. It was nice and sweet but had a slight bitter finish. Once again, Bell’s brings out another great beer.

Kirin ichiban (Los Angeles, CA)

This is a clear yellow beer. It had a light straw taste with minimal amounts of hop and malt flavors. This beer was very refreshing but nothing flashy. I guess I was just expecting more from the interesting bottle.

Victory Headwaters Pale ale (Downintown, PA)

Todd Zachritz: 2.0

Alison Sigman: 3

Pours very dark, almost black, with a large frothy head settled on top. There is noticeable roasted malt up front with some slightly sweet chocolate flavors that follow. The finish has some bitter coffee flavors, but all in all it goes down creamy and smooth.

A nice dark black beer that produced a brown head. This beer had a bunch of coffee and some smokey flavors. It was a little on the lighter side of • 70 •

This adjunct lager pours a cloudy golden, with an average head and minimal lace. Scent is clean...with overtones of rice and corn. Flavor is light, without any guts. I get some toasted rice, but no followthrough or depth. Complexity = 0. Kirin is an easy-to-drink light beer, and would probably be fine alongside a nice spicy Thai noodle dish, but as a drinking beer, this one fails.

Alison Sigman: 2

This beer reminds me of beers like Bud Light. It looks like any light beer, a very clear yellow with carbonation rising around the edges and almost no head to speak of. It was initially very inviting, but once I tasted nothing past the wetness of the drink, not so much. I kept drinking because some of the other samples made me thirsty, but I could have been drinking water.

Todd Zachritz: 5.0

Headwaters pours a nice coppery color, with rich suds and nice lace. Next, a lovely bouquet of hops hits the nose...fresh pine, grass, and citrus. Perfect. The flavor? A little bitterness, but with a smooth, clean finish, this is a welldone pale ale with character and distinction. A favorite, and an easyto-drink treat. My favorite this issue.

Alison Sigman: 3.5

This beer poured a brilliant golden color with a rich oatmeal head and contains some mild yeast and hops. Floral fruits like lemon and orange are present which give it a pleasant taste. It’s a nice mellow drink, low in alcohol, that has some hop kick. I can see drinking 3-4 very easy and not realizing it. www.News4UOnline.com • April 2011

The aroma is gentle, but shows sweet malts, hints of roast and smoke, and a clean but sweet again spice. I don’t know that I could drink more than a couple, but for a tasting like this it was perfect.

This beer poured a light orange color with a decent head. It had an ample amount of citrus hops flavor with a light body. It has a dry flavor but had a smooth finish. I am not a “hoppy” flavored beer fan but this one wasn’t bad.

Goose island Pepe Nero (Chicago, IL)

Todd Zachritz: 4.5 This Belgian farmhouse-style ale opens with some rather beautiful bottle art...sparse, stark, and classy. It pours a deep, dark amber (almost black), with a nice, thick head and lacing on the glass. Hmm. A provocative aroma! I get a little heat, no doubt the peppercorns, rather than the alcohol (it’s a

Jabez: 4 relatively tame 6%). The taste? Wow. This is different. I get a strong malt sense in there, but it’s quickly tamed down by the spice. It all finishes well with a peppery roastiness on the palate. It’s all balanced and well-tasty. Superb!

alison Sigman: 3

A nice dark porter beer which poured a very dark brown. I could smell the aroma of cloves in this beer. The flavor had some coca, wheat, lemon and lots of yeast. It was a creamy beer, lightly carbonated and very smooth. I also like the bitter finish to this beer.

“Whatever Happened To Pink Floyd? The Strange Case Of Waters And Gilmour” DVD (Sexy Intellectual/MVD Visual)

4 stars This unauthorized UK documentary spends 83 minutes examining the division of one of rock’s most legendary and influential groups, and the 4 albums that came during and after their split. Rather than looking at Pink Floyd’s well-trodden history, this DVD looks deeper at the reasons for and results of Floyd mainman Roger Waters’ exodus from the band, and the albums David Gilmour helmed after Waters. It’s a fascinating look at the shortcomings and pitfalls of two talented artists at odds with the industry, themselves, and each other.

their native country’s folk music alongside more modern metal sounds. “I Am Warrior” sounds like Carcass’ Jeff Walker fronting a Celtic folk act, but “The Column” is a superb and intense Irish-infused slice of near-black metal. “Thy Kingdom Gone” further shows that these guys have the chops -- a feverish assault of thrashy speed metal that easily holds its own. “The Voyage Of Bran” is a true example of Celtic metal, forging medieval melodies with driving guitars and drums.

The Low Anthem “Smart Flesh” CD (Nonesuch Records)

I’m not convinced on every track, though. When they’re “on”, Cruachan destroy. But some of the ornate medieval melodies sound downright silly when juxtaposed with the band’s oftencrushing riffs. Can’t commit here, sorry. – Todd Zachritz As with other releases on Sexy Intellectual, there are numerous “expert” opinions and dialogue from writers, biographers, and Pink Floyd collaborators. Some archival interviews with Pink Floyd members are also included as well, and the live excerpts (and some amazing footage from the 2005 reunion) make this one a must-see for serious Floyd fans. (Lost Canyon Records)

3.5 Stars

Bloomington, Indiana duo Jason and Ginger’s Jokerville, features 10 strippeddown tracks written terrifically by guitarist/singer Jason Fickel. Ginger Curry brings a Southern Gospel background to her belting vocal, but she can also croon at times, especially on songs like “One Thousand and One” and “Come Find Me Sleeping.” The album draws on several influences, with Blues-centric tracks like “Lucky One,” “Can’t Live No Place,” and “Monon Train.” “You Won’t Find Me” has a kind of Country feel, whereas

Recorded in an abandoned pasta sauce factory in their home state of Rhode Island, this album further proves that Low Anthem is one of America’s best unknown musical treasures. Sure, they have only a mere 3 albums under their belt, but “Smart Flesh” is wise listening for anyone who appreciates rustic and earthy indie pop with country and drone flavorings. The spectral and heartfelt opening paean, “Ghost Woman” opens it all in a low-key fashion. It’s a great little song, with wonderfully literate verbiage. Perfect. “Apothecary Love” is another memorable and catchy oldtime country lament. Beautiful. “Boeing 737” is a rousing and moving anthem, and “Wire” is a lovely clarinet interlude by the band’s Jocie Adams. “I’ll Take Out Your Ashes” is an appropriately sparse banjo-and-radio ballad featuring www.News4UOnline.com • April 2011

“Desert Etiquette” CD (Park The Van Records)

3 stars

Hailing from Black Mountain, North Carolina, this solo project of multiinstrumentalist songwriter Seth Kauffman brings in Band Of Horses’ Bill Reynolds to assist with the mix, and this partnership works well. Floating Action will appeal to BOH or Wilco fans, as this is similarly understated and classy roots-edged rock, dipping it’s fingers into Brian Wilson-era Beach Boys stylings, moody psychedelia, classic rock, and proto-country. Kauffman’s lazy summertime laments are instantly approachable, making “Desert Etiquette” listenable through multiple spins. With a slackerly vocal timbre akin to Thurston Moore at times, and recalling Jim James’ echoey innocence at others, Kauffman’s timeless tunes are similarly warm, inviting, and charming. “The Balance” is a memorably elegaic and graceful slice of swaying chamber pop, with a killer melody. “Please Reveal” is so sweet and innocent, it could be an Everly Brothers song, if not for the more modern production. “Eye Of A Needle” is a laid-back pop song with a haunting

The most likely template for Dethklok (the fictitious animated band from Adult Swim’s “Metalocalypse”), these Swedish warriors unleash their 8th studio album, and it leaps out of the starting gate with the potent and galloping metal of “War Of The Gods.” A harbinger of good things? In this case, yes. Amon Amarth’s respected Viking metal is produced magnificently, with every bass, lead, and rhythm guitar riff being clear and intense. The seething, gurgled vocals of Johan Hegg are scalding, and the drumming? Couldn’t sound better. Crisp highs, deep lows. It all adds up to a seriously world-class metal album. The band’s Tolkien-inspired song-tales of Norse mythology and epic battles are melodic and proficient, all the while remaining as complex as Meshuggah or as brutal as any death metal. It’s like death metal with melody, thrash metal with songwriting, or black metal with muscles. This is the music of Odin, of Thor and the gods of Asgard. “Surtur Rising” is, from start to finish, one of the best metal albums I’ve heard this year. – Todd Zachritz

“The King Of Limbs” (self-released)

I could expand on this album and do a full-on, in-depth review. But you already know whether you’ll be picking this one up or downloading it. Right? So let’s dispense with the formalities, shall we? Suffice to say, Radiohead doesn’t disappoint with this brief (8-song, 38-minute) album. It’s a laidback, spacious affair overall, without any certain standout “pop” hits necessarily. Electronic, ambient, organic, psychedelic, krautrock...it’s all there. Yorke and company are in fine form. (Download: Everything) – Todd Zachritz

The Atlas Moth “The One Amongst The Weed Fields” EP (Candlelight/Tanglade)

Featuring 4 classic rock songs reimagined by Chicago doom-weirdie-metal act Atlas Moth, this digital-only EP is a stopgap, proving that these guys have both a freaky sense of humor and the chops to drop thick, sludgy riffs freely and liberally. The standout is easily Pink Floyd’s “Fearless”, which goes for a seriously gargantuan riff and pummel. The rest of this? Needless and forgettable. This one’s hit-and-miss, so proceed with caution! (Download: “Fearless”) – Todd Zachritz

Philip Selway “Familial” (Nonesuch)

Solo album from Radiohead member who’s not Thom Yorke or Jonny Greenwood. Selway proves his songwriting worth with a superb album of mature and folksy pop tunes. I get a little Beatles, a little Pink Floyd. Lisa Germano and members of Wilco are present, as well, so you know this is an honest and tuneful set of songs. Good stuff! A Dream Within A Dream: A Discussion of A Mind Beside Itself ith their long and illustrious history, short films have seen many of Hollywood’s biggest names attached to them, including Directors George Lucas (Freiheit), Tim Burton (Vincent), Francis Ford Coppola (The Two Christophers), Stanley Kubrick (Day of the Fight), David Lynch (The Amputee) and Steven Spielberg (Escape to Nowhere). In fact, each had his beginnings in the world of short films before making the big break onto the silver screen. Short films have been an integral part of cinema for as long as films have been in production. In the 1920s feature films were quite short by our standards and short films were a common way of filling in the gaps, along with cartoons and newsreels. As feature films became longer, the tradition of showing short films in conjunction with features fell out of style and was soon dropped entirely. No longer a staple feature at the cinema, the short film is often overlooked and severely underappreciated in the film world. However, as with most styles of filmmaking, it was revived and continues to thrive, most commonly in the independent film industry and universities, allowing writers, directors and actors to show that they can pack a big emotional punch into a relatively small package. Having recently seen A Mind Beside Itself, the newest short film from local director P.J. Starks, I’m happy to say that short films have lost none of their poignancy. This is a film that would appear simple enough to examine, but defies definition because of its many intricate

layers. On the surface, it appears to be a romance flick centered on the relationship of a young couple, Tristan and Maya, as we watch them fall in and out of love. However, as we delve deeper, the film gets unexpectedly dark (and creepy) and we discover that something tragic has happened in the past. As the climax ominously begins to build, the viewer begins to realize that Tristan has a secret that leads us to a very unexpected and satisfying psychological twist ending. The film teases us at the very beginning with a portentous quote from the master of the macabre, Edgar Allan Poe, “Is all that we see or seem but a dream within a dream?” From this phrase alone, we know that not everything we will be as it seems and that we should not take anything for granted. Starks’ direction is methodical and precise and shows that even on a limited budget; a smart film can be made. What is most striking about A Mind Beside Itself is the level of character development achieved in such a limited time frame. The characters that we would normally lump into stereotypical archetypes are turned on their ear by the delightful and tragically twisted conclusion. At first, Tristan’s character seems to be a devoted and caring boyfriend to Maya, but he’s holding something back. This type of secretive male character is all too familiar because “the secret” is usually not only what ends the relationship, but also ultimately saves it from total ruin. The same goes for Maya, who at first appears to be the perfect girlfriend, but then turns into the nagging, hyperemotional woman that makes men grateful their significant others aren’t like that. However, under Stark’s sure direction, these conventions are only used as a springboard from which he draws inspiration, and eventually takes the characters to daring levels that other directors might not achieve in a mere twenty minutes. Overall, the film is nicely polished and packaged, but be warned, there is more to it than meets the eye. When you step inside P.J. Starks’ world, you cannot help but be drawn into it completely, feeling what the characters feel because they are so familiar. You will smile at their triumphs and you will cringe (and cry) and their losses. Don’t Miss Next Month!!...Fiction Meets Truth In Historical Dramas: A Review of Elizabeth! – Matt Hotz

ifC Midnight

Director James Gunn (Slither) is making his entry into the comic filled movie year with his own hero movie: Super. Much like Special, Defendor and Kick-Ass before it, Super tells the story of an everyday guy named Frank D’Arbo (Rainn Wilson, The Rocker) who transforms himself into a superhero, even though he has no special abilities or powers. After his wife Sarah (Liv Tyler, Armageddon) falls under the influence of a dangerous drug dealer named Jacques (Kevin Bacon, Stir of Echoes), Frank dons his costume and becomes the “Crimson Bolt” who protects society from even the most minor of crimes with a pipe wrench. The film is ultraviolent in its execution and the humor is very dark, but rather than taking itself too seriously, is a satire of the entire genre of comic book movies. This film will certainly not appeal to everyone, and is probably too violent for children, but for true lovers of twisted fantasies where anyone can be a hero, this is for you.

Following the initial critical and commercial success of the first Scream, two sequels were commissioned. However, both failed to live up to the original by a long shot and in the recent wake of seemingly endless prequels, sequels, reboots and reimaginings, it comes as no surprise that a fourth installment would eventually happen. What’s more surprising is that all of the original cast members have returned for this fourth outing as well as Wes Craven himself, who stated that he would only return to the director’s chair if the script was as good as the original scream. So now that the Ghostface killer stalks again, will you be in the audience or has this series run its course for you?

Planning the Perfect Reception Planning the perfect wedding includes everything from the venue to the vows. This month we begin our 3 part wedding planning series, by asking local experts to share their advice, tips and ideas for making sure your perfect day is just as perfect as you envision it.

First, lets start with the venue... What should a couple look for, or be aware of, when choosing a reception venue or location? What makes a venue special?

Red Fez Catering at the Hadi Temple

When choosing a reception location, know exactly what you want in a venue and never settle for less. Is a dance floor available? Ample parking? Can the venue be easily navigated by ceremony guests and out of town attendees? Do you have a choice of DJ service or are the recommended DJs the only option. How late can the reception last? When can the decorations go up in the reception hall, etc.? I could go on, but these are some key questions a couple should ask. The perfect wedding venue will have everything you are looking for and need. They will personalize their service to fit your event. For example, if you expect children to attend your reception you may need the venue to have child friendly restrooms. Be sure to make a list of possible scenarios when choosing a reception venue and make sure that the venue has addressed your personal concerns satisfactorily.

Just Rennies Catering

When choosing a reception location, make sure it’s close to the church or where ever the ceremony takes place, so your out of town guests can easily find it. It’s more practical that way. Observe the facility and make good judgment calls about those who manage it. Is the area clean? Are the people well represented? Are there cobwebs anywhere? Couples forget to check places like the bathroom or the windows for cleanliness. Also, always read the fine print on the contract if you have one. A venue is special if it’s what the bride has always dreamed of, a beautiful backdrop, with a courteous staff.

Bauer Tents & Rentals

We can address this question from a slightly different perspective. We are a complete party rental company – tents, tables, chairs, linens, dance floors, wall coverings, china, crystal – we take care of it all. It’s important to make the event personal. You can only do so much with interior space, but we try to fit the needs and the vision of the bride. We’ve done theme weddings that required transforming an entire room, including putting up paneling to change the wall design. When planning an outdoor wedding, you must think about the season. July and August are big wedding months, yet they are hot and not good for a bride wearing a 20 pound dress, or for guests who may be forced to sit in the hot sun. And if you foresee a formal wedding, an outdoor venue won’t be your best option since your female guests may want to wear stilettos, but not in the grass. New Harmony Inn & Red Geranium

The location needs to be agreeable to both the bride and groom. At our location, for example, we have wedding space, reception space, and overnight accommodations all within walking distance of each other. Brides also need to recognize that indoor weddings are completely different than outdoor venues, and that a casual space can’t become a black-tie event space. I would also advise brides to be flexible, with several dates in mind. Sometimes brides focus on getting the “easy” things out of the way and then realize they can’t secure their venue or caterer. They also need to alleviate the stress of the day and let someone else take control. People get paid to plan weddings to give the bride a stress free day, and that’s what matters most.

DiLegge’s Banquet Room

There are several key considerations when selecting the perfect venue. It must be accommodating for the amount of guests and must have great food. And the staff is as important as the venue itself. You want them to be professional, knowledgeable and courteous, and make everyone feel welcome.

Next, let’s choose a caterer...

What should a couple consider when choosing the perfect caterer? What mistakes have you seen couples make that you could potentially help our readers avoid?

Just Rennies Catering

One thing a couple has to consider is if the food is what they like while still fitting their budget. If quality is important to you ask if they make everything from scratch. Is their food presented beautifully? Listen to the community and ask your friends for recommendations about caterers. Regarding mistakes, a lot of couples get too nervous, both on the day of the event and leading up to it. The best way to plan the perfect day is to have fun with it. Don’t worry if one small thing goes wrong. Do you want to remember all the things that went wrong, or do you want to remember the most special day of your life? The best advice I have is for couples to enjoy their day, relax, and have fun. Afterall, the most important moment is the vows anyway.

Red Fez Catering at the Hadi Temple

A caterer can make your event the sucess you have always dreamed of or make it a nightmare. Make sure you are comfortable with the caterer handling the most important details of your reception. Ask the caterer key questions such as, have they handled events of your type and size? Do they provide tasting consultations/ food tastings and is there a fee for this service? What is the staff to guest ratio? Do they provide cake cutting services or should you hire someone to handle this? No detail should be taken for granted. With proper planning there should be no speed bumps or delays during your reception. Times are changing. Try serving a family style meal instead of a buffet or served dinner. This style of dinner service promotes socialization and is easier for the elderly than standing in a buffet line for forty five minutes.

New Harmony Inn & Red Geranium

The standards for weddings and receptions have changed greatly over the years. Brides should be free to choose what they want and what’s best for their budget, not what others have told them that they “need” to do. Couples today need to rely on their own judgments, as well as the advice of the experts with whom they surround themselves. You can’t always please everyone, they need to realize that. There really is no right or wrong way to plan your reception. It’s your big day. Remember to follow your heart and just enjoy it.

(continued) The biggest mistake that I see in wedding reception planning is overplanning. Simpler is better. Your guests are there to celebrate your wedding. It doesn’t need to be a production. If the room is too busy, your family and guests may overlook things that you want them to remember - like your wedding cake. And when submitting final head counts to the caterer, give true numbers. More times than not couples will submit a higher number just in case. Remember, caterers are professionals. When given accurate numbers, food quantities will be accurate. The number one responsibility of the caterer is to meet the needs of the bride and groom. Do they serve the style of food that the couple want and will enjoy? Do they offer tastings, or to take recipes? It’s the couple’s day, they should be able to get everything they want. It’s also important to remember that while the cake and the photographer are important, the venue and caterers are too, and can’t be overlooked.

• 86 •

Obviously the caterer must fit in your budget and the food needs to be of great quality. I think that a lot of people believe that they need to pay for everything for their guests, including all alcohol, etc. But that’s just not the case. Cash bars and cocktail hours are becoming more popular.

Now, let’s talk about Cakes What trends are you seeing in wedding cakes today and what would you say is the most popular selection?

Daily’s Bakery

All of the frou-frou cakes are gone these days. There are no plastic flourishes anymore. Cakes are much sleeker these days as well. Fondant cakes became popular because everyone saw them on the TV. Now, the current trend is moving away from fondant and going back to buttercream. Brides always want the newest thing, and buttercream, homemade flowers, and fountains are coming back in a big way. Brides these days know what they want; they bring in pictures and sketches. It’s really refreshing to see brides know exactly what they want. Flavors are becoming a big factor as well. Brides want to try different things like tropical flavors; it’s not so much the white cake with buttercream frosting anymore.

Gifts for Him & Her What items and gifts are most popular for bridal showers and parties? What advice do you have for grooms when selecting a lingerie gift? Are there any lingerie trends that are porular right now.

Exotica Romance & Fantasy Superstore

Some of our most popular items for wedding and bridal showers and bachelorette parties are lingerie, of course, and “Last Night Out” veils and sashes. Our advice for grooms is to find something that you like because she’s wearing it for you. As far as lingerie trends go, it seems that some things never change the less material the better it sells!

Risque Lingerie & More

When it comes to bridal showers and parties our best sellers are lingerie, bustiers, novelty fun items, his and her gift sets, party supplies, etc. In regards to grooms buying gifts, we’d reccommend bustiers, babydolls, something that’s pretty, mature and sexy, not sleazy. Guys need to remember that their taste is sometimes different than their bride-to-be. Popular trends in lingerie include corsets, and bustiers worn as outerwear with jeans, shirts and jackets. Club wear is also becoming more popular with the everyday woman. We’ve also got a wide variety of lotions and potions designed to heat up your love life.

Photo Fun Time

How long have photobooths been popular at wedding receptions? What kind of feedback have you received from clients who have used them? Why do you think everyone likes them so much?

Funshots Photobooth

I saw them for the first time in November 2009 in the Indianapolis area and realized the Evansville market was lacking. I started seeing them regularly in 2010. People love them because they are new and different. They’re great to have in a private setting versus what you see in malls across town. They’re great for friends and family to bond, especially after not seeing each other for several years. I’ve noticed that even people who don’t like having their picture taken are able to dress up and have fun with it. Couples get professional photos from the reception and those can sometimes seem so rigid. These are fun and unconventional, but can still be cherished for many years to come. • 90 •

HIGH SCHOOL ART SHOW Be sure to stop by the Evansville Museum to enjoy the annual High School Art Show, with exhibits on display through April 17.

T

his year 111 entries were accepted by juror Brian Lee Whisenhunt, Director of Swope Art Museum in Terre Haute, out of 800 total submissions from 16 area schools. Mr. Whisenhunt stated that all of the entries were the finest in the region. According to the Director, “In both drawing and ceramics, the submissions seemed to step outside of what is considered ‘typical’ subjects by young people in the media to present new forms, abstract drawings, lustrous glazes and delicate depictions of the world.” He noted that it was increasingly difficult to eliminate pieces from the show as the judging process progressed, and that to be accepted into the show is an honor in and of itself. This year the Evansville Museum Contemporaries’ $100 merit award went to Castle High School’s Lindsey Eble. Lindsey is currently a Junior and has already honed the techniques of how to throw ceramics, “pull” handles, and piece together exceptional artwork. Her piece, entitled “Heart’s Desire”, is a teapot with an ever-changing physique. The teapot’s handle is located at the top rather than the side, which provides both form and function. The blue glaze is simple yet satisfying as it compliments the artwork’s structure. Lindsey’s piece is not for sale, but you can enjoy it, along with many other fantastic works now through April 17th. It’s an event you don’t want to miss! –Jeremy Luman
