s we’ve adjusted to a “new normal” in 2020, it’s been uplifting to reflect

upon the successes and celebrations in 2019. We are inspired by the many generous supporters who stepped forward with compassion to help us enhance care across our health system. During a year of uncertainty, their gifts give us tremendous hope. Thanks to grateful patient families, we made significant strides in advancing both pediatric and adult heart programs, with gifts to support the creation of an outpatient pediatric cardiac center at Levine Children’s and a center for cardiovascular care transformation at Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute. Our Levine Children’s gala resulted in a record $2+ million to enhance programs and services at Levine Children’s Hospital. And we received transformational gifts to advance cancer research and survivorship programs; launch virtual primary care in rural schools; and address disparities in care by taking health services directly to underserved communities. With collective support from our team of individuals, families, foundations, and corporations, Atrium Health Foundation raised over $30 million in 2019. I am grateful for their vision and dedication to the “next generation” of healthcare. From transforming cardiac care to fueling our research efforts, to improving access to care, philanthropy is making a significant impact on the health of our community. It’s an honor to work alongside such a dedicated team. Together, we will continue to provide hope, health, and healing – for all.

With gratitude,

Armando L. Chardiet President

PATIENT CARE Highlights I

n 2019, Atrium Health Foundation received

transformative gifts that will have a profound and immediate impact on the patient care Atrium Health delivers to children and adults. Philanthropy continues to drive significant advancements in Atrium Health’s care delivery model, including: funding innovations in the delivery of cardiovascular care; establishing an Adolescent and Young Adult Survivorship Clinic at Levine Cancer Institute; advancing community outreach and virtual care; and expanding one of the world’s few bone marrow transplant and cellular therapy units dedicated to pediatric patients. These and other developments funded by the generosity of donors continue to put Atrium Health on the map as a destination for world-class care. 2 0 1 9

$2.5 MILLION HEARTEST YARD PEDIATRIC CARDIAC CENTER AT LEVINE CHILDREN’S Opening their hearts for Levine Children’s patients and heart families more than ever before, Greg Olsen and his family made a generous $2.5 million gift from Receptions for Research: The Greg Olsen Foundation to help build a next generation pediatric cardiovascular and congenital heart outpatient clinic – The HEARTest Yard Pediatric Cardiac Center at Levine Children’s. The gift was announced following The HEARTest Yard Golf Classic, a fundraiser held on May 6 at the Club at Longview, and marks the largest commitment to date from Greg’s foundation. Greg and Kara Olsen started the HEARTest Yard initiative in 2012 to help underwrite private home health care for children born with congenital heart defects. Having a son with a congenital heart defect, they understood firsthand the special needs of these patients. In 2017, their vision, coupled with a $750,000 commitment, helped launch a cardiac neurodevelopmental clinic at Levine Children’s. The clinic now provides cardiac patients and families at Levine Children’s – from birth through adulthood – access to neuropsychologists, education specialists, mental health professionals, dietitians, and other innovative patient therapies. Thanks to the generosity of the Olsen family, Levine Children’s Hospital can now provide the most comprehensive cardiac care in the country for young heart patients. The HEARTest Yard Pediatric Cardiac Center, scheduled to open in the coming months, will be housed in the Medical Center Plaza building adjacent to Levine Children’s Hospital.

$2 MILLION CENTER FOR CARDIOVASCULAR CARE TRANSFORMATION AT SANGER HEART & VASCULAR INSTITUTE A $2 million gift from the California-based William, Jeff, and Jennifer Gross Family Foundation will launch the Center for education, research, and clinical care pathways necessary to support foundation change in the delivery of cardiovascular care in the greater Charlotte region. It will be housed in the new Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute Kenilworth location. The new Center for Cardiovascular Care Transformation will address the challenges that providers face in delivering the best cardiovascular care, translating research into clinical care, identifying disparities in care among underserved populations, and investing in virtual access and remote patient monitoring capabilities.

“Currently, there is no existing model of cardiovascular care delivery in the country that can provide ‘best cardiovascular care’ to address expected patient needs. Thanks to community support from generous organizations such as the William, Jeff, and Jennifer Gross Family Foundation, we will implement novel approaches to care that once developed, can be replicated at other health systems across the country.” — GEOFF ROSE, MD PRESIDENT, SANGER HEART & VASCULAR INSTITUTE

ISABELLA SANTOS FOUNDATION ISF RARE AND SOLID TUMOR PROGRAM AT LEVINE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL Seven-year-old Isabella, namesake of the Isabella Santos Foundation, will always have a lasting legacy in the hearts of Levine Children’s Hospital patients and teammates. Though her precious life was cut short by a rare form of cancer, thousands of Isabella Santos Foundation supporters honor Isabella’s memory each year through their gifts, including many families who have been impacted by childhood cancer. From hosting road races and galas, to bringing “Christmas in July” presents to patients at Levine Children’s Hospital, the Isabella Santos Foundation contributes essential funding to bring the latest cancer research and treatments to the Isabella Santos Foundation Rare and Solid Tumor Program at Levine Children’s Hospital. Just as meaningful, ISF has created a community of support for families facing childhood cancer to share their stories and strength with one another. The Isabella Santos Foundation’s 12th annual 5K/10K For Kids Cancer, along with the organization’s Pumpkin Ball, collectively raised over $650,000 to support the ISF Rare and Solid Tumor Program at Levine Children’s Hospital. Established in 2018 with ISF’s commitment of $5 million, the program oversees metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) therapy and related clinical research.

BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD $750,000 MOBILE PRIMARY CARE AND BEHAVIORAL SERVICES ONE Charlotte Health Alliance was formed in 2016 by Atrium Health, Novant Health and the Mecklenburg County Health Department as a community effort to bring resources and awareness to core issues in our surrounding area, one of which is healthcare. To help support this project, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) has committed to funding $750,000 over the next three years to help operate the mobile health units. Together, Blue Cross NC and ONE Charlotte Health Alliance will provide access to healthcare services in underserved

PATIENT CARE Highlights

communities throughout Charlotte. These services will include medical, dental and behavioral health services. Currently in the Charlotte area, lack of affordability is the main reason for not seeking medical care. Thanks to support from Blue Cross NC, the mobile units will provide care at an affordable price, and people of all ages and communities will be empowered to improve their health and well-being.

THE DUKE ENDOWMENT $1,045,000 CANCER PREVENTION EDUCATION AND INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES The Duke Endowment, whose mission emphasizes nurturing the health and wellbeing of residents in the Carolinas, shares Atrium Health’s fundamental belief in the importance of fostering environments that promote health, hope, and healing – for all. As the recipient of over $1 million in grants awarded by The Duke Endowment in 2019, Atrium Health has expanded access to care for communities of need through innovative approaches to healthcare delivery. With support from The Duke Endowment, Levine Cancer Institute’s I CAN Cancer Ambassador program educates K-12 students about cancer prevention and connects underserved families with primary care services and free cancer screenings. Access to behavioral healthcare and crisis-intervention has expanded with the Duke Endowment’s support of Atrium Health’s VIBRANT program, which equips rural emergency departments with tele-psychiatric capabilities and virtual patient navigation. The Duke Endowment has also helped Atrium Health integrate emergency care, primary care and oral care in Anson County, as well as create a collective impact framework, which allows Atrium Health and community stakeholders to partner in addressing social determinants of health. 2 0 1 9

BONE MARROW TRANSPLANTATION AND CELLULAR THERAPIES Levine Children’s Hospital is now home to the region’s only Bone Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapies unit, thanks to generous philanthropic support. The program is among the few worldwide that offer transplant and cellular therapies to pediatric patients in a setting that provides for optimal physical and emotional healing. Transplant and cellular therapies include transplants for children, as well as treatment of non-cancerous disorders, such as bone marrow failure, immunodeficiencies and blood diseases. Because of the delicate nature of bone marrow transplants, which can keep patients confined to their rooms for weeks at a time to safely avoid exposure to germs, an important feature of the new unit is a centralized HEPA-filtered air system that allows patients to move more freely throughout the 8-bed unit. This groundbreaking expansion was made possible by Sandra and Leon Levine and through funds raised during the 2017 and 2018 Levine Children's Gala and the overall generosity of our community. The unit can now accommodate the addition of nationally recognized medical experts who help the program achieve transplant survival rates that rank among the top 10 in the country. Once again, philanthropic support has helped Levine Children's Hospital innovate and provide cutting-edge treatment for patients with life-threatening illnesses where they need it most – close to home.

RACE FOR THE CAUSE $22,000 ORAL CANCER RESEARCH, LEVINE CANCER INSTITUTE

MEDICAL RESEARCH & EDUCATION Highlights

The Jeremy B. Blevins Oral Cancer Fund’s annual Race for the Cause 5K/10K raised $22,000 to benefit oral cancer research and patient care at Levine Cancer Institute. The event, which takes place every February, was started by Shelley Blevins in honor of her late husband, Jeremy, who was diagnosed with oral cancer at age 41. Support from this event has enabled the Disparities & Outreach team at Levine Cancer Institute to purchase clinical equipment to conduct free head & neck screenings for firefighters onsite at individual fire stations. The screenings have been especially impactful to volunteer fire departments where risk is high but

insurance coverage for health screenings is often lacking.

Annual/Planned Giving 38

A $1 million gift from an anonymous grateful patient family has established the Richard L. White, Jr., MD, Distinguished Chair in Surgical Oncology at Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute. “This is a transformational gift that will help distinguish our surgical oncology services as among the most advanced in the country,” said Derek Raghavan, MD, PhD, President of Levine Cancer Institute. “We are honored to receive such generous support from grateful patients and families.” Dr. White was honored at an investiture ceremony held at Levine Cancer Institute on April 29, 2019, during which he was named the inaugural distinguished chair in surgical oncology. Access to world class care is important to Dr. White, who expressed his gratitude for the support he has received for his program. “Thanks to gifts such as these, physicians like me have access to funds for innovative research, educational opportunities, and special projects that may lead to new therapies,” said Dr. White. “Not to mention, grateful patients who give back to our program are inspiring others to give.” As the Distinguished Chair in Surgical Oncology, Dr. White will continue to lead and help advance the Institute’s division of surgical oncology and the management of cancerous tumors.

Highlights CORPORATE PARTNERS

Partnerships are essential to the fabric of Atrium Health Foundation. The Foundation has been fortunate through the years to partner with corporations, foundations, and other organizations that demonstrate a passion for enhancing world-class medical care and pioneering research – bringing hope and cures to children, families, our community and beyond.

$1 MILLION LEVINE CANCER INSTITUTE In the fall of 2019, the Carolina Panthers, long-standing partners of Atrium Health, generously donated $1 million to support cancer research at the Levine Cancer Institute (LCI) through the Keep Pounding Fund. In recognition of their generous gift, the Keep Pounding Family Center in the newly expanded Institute is being named in honor of the team’s signature mantra, Keep Pounding. The spacious family and visitor center is located along the 3rd Floor of the Institute within the Skybridge, which connects the original Institute to the new building. Exterior windows and natural light create a calming environment in the center, which features a Keep Pounding theme throughout, including a mural that pays tribute to former Panthers player and coach Sam Mills, who originated the Keep Pounding mantra while enduring and eventually losing his own battle with cancer. Coach Mills coined the original mantra, “Keep Pounding,” during the Panthers’ first journey to the Super Bowl. His words resonated with not only the team, but the fans – and today, Keep Pounding continues as an integral part of the Carolina Panthers’ community initiatives. Atrium Health Foundation has benefited from a longstanding partnership with the Carolina Panthers since first establishing the Keep Pounding fund in 2003 to benefit adult and pediatric cancer programs at Atrium Health. Since that time, the Panthers have helped raise nearly $3 million for the fund through the sale of fan memorabilia, license plates, the Keep Pounding online auction, and hosting the annual Keep Pounding 5K at Bank of America Stadium.

Jeans, Genes and Geniuses

Special Events

For more than a decade, Charlotte natives Jane and Luther Lockwood along with their daughter Jane, have rallied around a cause that has touched their lives deeply: Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy, a progressive genetic disease that affects voluntary muscles, range of movement, and mobility over time. Daughter Jane was first diagnosed with the disease when she was just five years old. Since that time, her family has worked tirelessly to advance muscular dystrophy research. First organized in 2008, the family’s grassroots fundraising initiative – Jeans, Genes and Geniuses – has raised more than $700,000 to benefit the McColl-Lockwood Laboratory for Muscular Dystrophy Research at Carolinas Medical Center, one of the leading facilities in the world dedicated to finding a cure for Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy. Gifts made to their Jeans, Genes and Geniuses fundraising events chiefly benefit a biennial International Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy Research Conference, hosted in Charlotte, which brings together experts from across the globe to specifically address the latest research initiatives likely to deliver a cure. The 2019 event raised over $110,000 to advance LGMD research.

Pink Pint Night Breast cancer survivors, supporters, and beer lovers united in September for the 9th Annual Pink Pint Night. Hosted by NoDa Brewing and Charlotte Radiology, the event raised $100,000 for Project PINK, a collaboration between Levine Cancer Institute and Charlotte Radiology to provide breast cancer screenings, mammograms, and diagnostic testing to uninsured women in Charlotte. Guests enjoyed food trucks, a silent auction, and got the opportunity to enjoy a specially brewed, pink beer in honor of the event.
