HEALING
OUR MISSION:
Inspire transformational giving to improve HEALTH, elevate HOPE, and advance HEALING – for all.
A Message from our Board Chair:
In 2022, we celebrated the second year of our Giving Hope campaign, nearing the halfway point of our $500 million goal to transform health care delivery in the communities Atrium Health serves. It’s rewarding to help lead an effort that has ignited such passion for giving back, strengthening what was already a firm foundation at our health system.
Individuals, family foundations, and corporations have all inspired us with their commitments to ensuring access to care, equitable opportunities for learning and development, optimal environments for care delivery, innovative technology, and cutting-edge research. From breaking ground on a state-of-the-art radiation therapy facility, to expanding novel heart programs and cancer research, to receiving unprecedented support from our corporate partners, we realized the good fortune of living in such a generous community.
With tremendous gratitude, we recognize the many friends and leaders who continue to share and entrust their time, talent, and treasure with Atrium Health Foundation. Thank you!
Mandy Houser Board Chair, Atrium Health FoundationDear Friends,
In reflecting upon 2022, I’m filled with gratitude…for this community, our leaders, and our team, whose collective efforts resulted in one of our most successful years to date.
Within those 12 months, our donors went to great lengths to raise funds for Atrium Health, some running, cycling, golfing, swimming, driving, or playing tennis for a cause. Dedicated partners invested heavily in community health, and family foundations generously supported cardiac, cancer, women’s care, and more. Each one of these donors has helped shine the light on areas that are so critical to the health of those we serve.
With deep appreciation to those featured in this report, I thank them for helping us to fulfill our mission of inspiring transformational giving to ensure health, hope, and healing – for all.

27th Annual Hopebuilders 5K COMMUNITY HITS A HOME RUN FOR PEDIATRIC PATIENTS
On November 5, hundreds of community members laced up their running shoes and made their way to Uptown Charlotte for the 27th Annual Hopebuilders 5K. For the first time, the signature fundraising event for Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital welcomed participants to Truist Field, home of the Charlotte Knights.
Nearly three decades after its inception, the Hopebuilders 5K continues to be a beacon of hope for families in the region, providing over $3 million in philanthropic support to date for care advancements at Atrium Health Levine Children’s.
PROGRAMS
Since the Keep Pounding initiative began, more than $4.4 million has been raised for cancer research at Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute and Atrium Health Levine Children’s.
ATRIUM HEALTH LEADS COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIP TO REDUCE HEALTH DISPARITIES
With a $10 million gift from Bank of America, Atrium Health has established “Meaningful Medicine,” a program uniting the best innovations within health care, social impact, and workforce development to directly target health equity and economic mobility goals within Charlotte.
Within three years, Meaningful Medicine is expected to offer school-based virtual care at 50 CMS schools and behavioral health telemedicine at 31 schools.
A collaborative partnership with CharlotteMecklenburg Schools (CMS), Mecklenburg County, Central Piedmont Community College, and YMCA of Greater Charlotte, Atrium Health’s Meaningful Medicine program will support CMS students at Title I schools and expand opportunities for economically underprivileged CMS graduates to attain health care careers with family-supporting wages. Additionally, the program will provide the most vulnerable in the community with embedded health support systems, including convenient access to new virtual health care sites.
ATRIUM HEALTH’S MOBILE FLEET GROWS, EXPANDING HEALTH CARE REACH
A $5.05 million contribution from Truist, via the Truist Charitable Fund and Truist Foundation, will advance several community-driven programs aimed at improving health outcomes and economic mobility for vulnerable community members in the Charlotte area.
A significant portion of the gift will support the development of a medical neighborhood – including mobile primary care units and an expanded community doulas program. Additional funds will provide STEM learning opportunities for CMS students from Title I schools and build career pathways for justice-involved individuals and entry-level teammates.
PHILANTHROPIC INVESTMENT TRANSFORMS ATRIUM HEALTH WOMEN’S CARE
A $10 million gift from Anna Spangler Nelson and Thomas C. Nelson, through the C.D. Spangler Foundation, will transform women’s care at Atrium Health facilities across the Greater Charlotte community by increasing access to care, expanding education and training programs to improve birth outcomes, and providing children with a healthy start in life to help prepare them for academic success.
The ambitious, multifaceted strategy involves experiential education and training for care providers; access to high-quality, culturally compassionate care, close to home; and support for future academic growth within Atrium Health Women's Care.
COMMUNITY PARTNER FUELS INNOVATIONS IN CARE
Building a Sustainable Care Delivery Model for Addressing Acute Social Needs
A $500,000 grant from The Duke Endowment will support Atrium Health’s efforts to address critical social determinants of health and improve health equity among minority and low-income populations. Over a three-year period, Atrium Health will expand one of its social impact programs – Building a Sustainable Care Delivery Model for Addressing Acute Social Needs – across Greater Charlotte. Program priorities include optimizing the Community Resource Hub (a digital referral tool) and assembling an interdisciplinary care team to connect patients with resources they need to improve their health.
Bolstering Support for Sepsis Transition and Recovery Program
A $700,000 grant from The Duke Endowment will support Atrium Health’s Sepsis Transition and Recovery (STAR) intervention program. Created in 2019, the program monitors patients across post-acute settings, allowing clinicians to intervene early and improve health outcomes for sepsis survivors, while reducing the cost of care. With support from The Duke Endowment, Atrium Health will examine strategies to extend the STAR program to the most vulnerable sepsis survivors in Charlotte and beyond.
Improving Type 2 Diabetes Interventions in Rural Communities
With support from The Duke Endowment, Atrium Health aims to significantly improve type 2 diabetes management at rural primary care practices in the Greater Charlotte community by establishing a culturally tailored, telehealth-based clinical pharmacy program. The pilot study, which received $315,799 in grant funding from The Duke Endowment, will enable pharmacists to identify and address medicationrelated problems, optimize medication regimens, and provide type 2 diabetes education and self-management support.
Using AI Models to Predict Coronavirus Infections
With a $605,000 grant from The Duke Endowment, Atrium Health and Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist will build an AI model to better predict future waves or clusters of coronavirus infections. The two-year study will use SARS-CoV-2 sequencing data to detect new variants. Through AI modeling, Atrium Health will be better prepared to protect the local population and efficiently deploy health care resources where they are needed most.
CORPORATE PARTNERS INVEST IN ATRIUM HEALTH’S WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PATHWAYS
Ally Charitable Foundation Supports Equitable Health Care Career Opportunities
A $5 million gift from Ally Charitable Foundation will support equitable opportunities for individuals to pursue careers in health care, establishing the Ally Charitable Foundation Workforce Development Center of Excellence at Atrium Health and the Ally Charitable Foundation Workforce Development Scholarship Fund.
The Center will provide individuals from historically marginalized or diverse populations with access to a variety of career development pathways to seek their education. The contribution will expand Atrium Health’s current professional development programming and target individuals who need additional skills to enter a variety of high-paying careers in health care.
The scholarship fund, established with $1 million of the gift, will provide $50,000 per year for scholarships to Carolinas College of Health Sciences.
TowneBank Funds Scholarship Opportunities for Underrepresented Students
A $500,000 gift from TowneBank will create scholarships available to incoming students at Carolinas College of Health Sciences, with the goal of increasing the diversity of the student body and ensuring that students from disadvantaged backgrounds have equitable opportunities to pursue their desired profession. Over the next 10 years, TowneBank will fund $50,000 in scholarships each year.
ENDOWED CHAIR SUPPORTS ATRIUM HEALTH’S COMPREHENSIVE STROKE NETWORK
Atrium Health Neurosciences Institute named Dr. Rahul Karamchandani as the inaugural holder of the George Shinn Endowed Chair of Neurovascular Medicine. The endowed chair, which supports Atrium Health’s regional stroke network, was made possible through a transformational gift from George Shinn in 2020.
As the largest stroke network in the region, the George Shinn Comprehensive Stroke Center at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center offers patients access to life-saving treatments, closer to home, treating over 4,000 strokes each year.
Pictured: Dr. Rahul Karamchandani, George Shinn Endowed Chair in Neurovascular Medicine (seated), with (standing L-R) Dr. Tony Asher, president of Atrium Health Neurosciences Institute; benefactor George Shinn; and Ken Haynes, president of the Southeast region for Advocate Health.SPINE SURGERY PROFESSORSHIP SUPPORTS ATRIUM HEALTH MUSCULOSKELETAL INSTITUTE
Charlotte community leaders established the Dr. Jerry and Audrey Petty Endowed Professorship in Spine Surgery at Atrium Health Musculoskeletal Institute. The professorship, which honors Dr. Jerry M. Petty, was made possible with a leading $2.3 million gift from Linda and Rick Hendrick, with Felix Sabates, Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates, Sally and Downie Saussy, and the Petty family among additional contributors.
Dr. Domagoj Coric is the inaugural holder of the professorship. The endowment will support his research and educational initiatives strategically envisioned by Atrium Health Musculoskeletal Institute and SpineFirst leadership.
ENDOWED CHAIR SUPPORTS CARDIOVASCULAR CARE TRANSFORMATION
Atrium Health Foundation received a $2 million gift from the California-based William, Jeff and Jennifer Gross Family Foundation to endow the medical director for The Jenny & Jeff Gross Family Center for Cardiovascular Care
Transformation at Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute. The Center serves as the catalyst for innovation in education, research, and clinical care pathways necessary to support foundational change in Atrium Health’s delivery of cardiovascular care.
Transformational support from the Gross family has allowed Atrium Health to establish a virtual Hypertension Bootcamp, leveraging in-home monitoring and a multidisciplinary team to tackle one of health care’s greatest challenges. This important step paves the way for operating at-scale with novel, patient-centered models of care for cardiovascular diseases.
ENDOWED CHAIR TO ADVANCE MELANOMA TREATMENT AND RESEARCH
A $1 million gift from the family of Alvin Levine established the Alvin E. Levine Distinguished Chair in Melanoma Research Endowment at Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute. Dr. Asim Amin, director of immunotherapy at Levine Cancer Institute, is the first recipient of the chair. The endowment, which honors the memory and legacy of the late Alvin E. Levine, will help advance melanoma research led by Dr. Amin, as well as the development of novel therapies that will lead to earlier detection, improved outcomes, and curative treatments for melanoma.

Levine Distinguished Chair in Melanoma Research (seated), with (standing L-R) Dr. Derek Raghavan, past president of Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute; Ken Haynes, president of the Southeast region for Advocate Health; Daniel and Helene Levine, son and wife of the late Alvin Levine; and Armando Chardiet, president of Atrium Health Foundation.
SANDRA LEVINE YOUNG WOMEN’S BREAST CANCER PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTED AT NATIONAL CONFERENCE
Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute announced findings from a progressive breast cancer study, conducted by the Sandra Levine Young Women's Breast Cancer Program, at the annual American Society of Breast Surgeons conference. The study is among the largest to examine the impact of surgical approaches to care on survival outcomes in a young breast cancer patient population.
The research was presented by Dr. Christine Pestana, a fellow with Levine Cancer Institute’s oncology team, along with Dr. Lejla Hadzikadic-Gusic, co-director of the Sandra Levine Young Women’s Breast Cancer Program. Dr. Pestana’s investigation found that a more extensive surgical approach did not lead to better outcomes for breast cancer patients under 40. The clinical implications of this research are significant as they can potentially impact future treatment for this patient population.
The SandraLevine Young Women’s Breast Cancer Program, which exists thanks to the generosity of many benefactors, including Sandra and Leon Levine, is one of only a few of its kind nationwide, and the only one in the Southeast. Through the program, patients have access to support services that are tailored to their unique needs, including a young women’s support group, a mind-body-spirit connection speaker series, a peer mentoring program, fertility preservation, and genetic counseling.
PHILANTHROPY DRIVES PEDIATRIC ONCOLOGY RESEARCH ADVANCEMENTS
Atrium Health Levine Children's is developing promising therapies for high-risk and rare forms of pediatric cancer, offering Phase I and Phase II clinical trials that give families hope when standard treatments have failed.
With a $300,000 grant from Hyundai Hope On Wheels, Dr. Jeffrey Huo will research a novel treatment for two specific non-medulloblastoma pediatric brain tumors, both of which have dismal prognoses with current therapies. Findings from the two-year study may have significant, rapid, and broad impacts on children with other types of hard-to-treat tumors.
LEVINE CANCER INSTITUTE’S RESEARCH LEADS TO NEW TREATMENT FOR LYMPHOMA PATIENTS
Dr. Nilanjan Ghosh, chair of Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute’s department of hematologic oncology and blood disorders, contributed to a clinical trial that showed the potential benefits of a new second-line treatment for adults with B-cell lymphoma. The treatment, approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2022, may offer an important option for patients who are not eligible for stem-cell transplant based on their age or comorbidities.
Patients with large B-cell lymphoma who have relapsed or have “refractory” disease, meaning they don’t respond to standard therapies, typically have poor outcomes. However, following the positive results from the immunotherapy trial in which Dr. Ghosh and several Levine Cancer Institute patients were involved, these patients will soon have a significant treatment option.
The trial tested the drug Breyanzi (liso-cel), now one of six CAR-T therapies on the market. CAR-T treatments have greatly improved the prognosis for patients with some forms of blood cancer.
ATRIUM HEALTH UNION WEST OPENS ITS DOORS
Atrium Health Union West opened in February 2022, making it the health system’s first newly built hospital in the Charlotte area in more than 30 years. Located in the western part of Union County, the hospital represents Atrium Health’s commitment to providing exceptional health care close to home.
The 150,000-square-foot hospital has 40 licensed beds, a 24/7 emergency department with a helipad, three operating rooms, and a maternity care unit with c-section capability. The adjacent medical plaza provides patients access to specialty care at Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute, Levine Cancer Institute, the Charlotte Radiology Breast Center, and Urology Specialists of the Carolinas, in addition to specialists in endocrinology, gastroenterology and hepatology, obstetrics and gynecology, pulmonology, and sleep medicine.
ATRIUM HEALTH BREAKS GROUND ON RADIATION THERAPY FACILITY
Atrium Health broke ground on a state-of-the-art facility in March 2022 that will bring two innovative treatments to patients in the Charlotte community for the first time. Both treatments – proton beam therapy, a form of highly precise radiation therapy, and gamma knife radiosurgery, a non-invasive treatment for brain lesions – deliver targeted radiation with extreme precision, which can improve quality of life and reduce side effects in patients with complex tumors. Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute is already an established leader in radiation therapy, and this facility will continue to advance that work.
The facility is made possible by the ongoing support of community donors, including The Leon Levine Foundation, whose generosity continues to propel Levine Cancer Institute forward as one of the leading cancer centers in the nation.
PHILANTHROPY SUPPORTS NEW STANDARD FOR PEDIATRIC OUTPATIENT CARE AT ATRIUM HEALTH
A $1 million gift from Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation will establish the Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation Infusion Suite at Atrium Health Levine Children’s Medical Plaza. The state-of-the-art, 17-bay infusion suite will allow for the administration of Phase I clinical trials, Dendritic Cell Vaccines, and many other new immunotherapies for pediatric cancer patients.
Anchoring the Torrence E. Hemby Jr. Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and BMT Center, the infusion suite will provide the highest level of clinical care in an environment that offers play, art, music, and other vital supportive medicine modalities.
The Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation Infusion Suite will be located on the third floor of Atrium Health Levine Children’s Medical Plaza, which is undergoing a complete renovation to meet the growing need for multidisciplinary pediatric
TRANSFORMATIONAL GIFT ESTABLISHES CARDIO-ONCOLOGY CENTER OF EXCELLENCE
A $2 million gift from The Dowd Foundation will establish The Dowd Foundation Center for Cardio-Oncology, a coordinated effort between Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute and Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute. Cardio-oncology is a rapidly evolving field of medicine that focuses on the prevention and treatment of adverse cardiac effects of cancer therapies.
Spearheaded by renowned cardiologist Dr. Jai Singh, the Center will focus on the prevention, early detection, and treatment of cardiac side effects in patients receiving life-prolonging cancer therapies, as well as optimize the heart health of cancer survivors.
