CHARIS CANCER FELLOWSHIP: PAVING THE WAY FOR THE FUTURE OF BREAST ONCOLOGY
For more than a decade, Levine Cancer Institute has maintained a commitment to providing the highest quality of care to patients with breast cancer and breast disease, which includes training the next generation of oncologists in novel surgical procedures and innovative treatments. As one of 11 Atrium Health fellowship programs accredited by the ACGME – a private, not-for-profit organization that sets standards for US graduate medical education –the Charis Cancer Fellowship provides exceptionally talented surgical residents with comprehensive experience in all aspects of breast cancer care.
The Charis Cancer Fellowship was established in 2010 by two local benefactors, whose collective gifts to the program have been made anonymously out of their commitment to helping others. Inspired by their strong belief in the healing power of God, the donors were intentional in naming the fellowship Charis – a word from the Greek New Testament that means “grace” in modern terms.
The one-year intensive fellowship, awarded annually, offers hands-on patient care and practical experience, as well as exposure to experts through weekly tumor boards, lectures, simulation labs, and regular case reviews with physician leaders.
The comprehensive program aims to develop knowledgeable, confident surgeons and leaders in the field of surgical and breast oncology. With future philanthropic support, the Charis Cancer Fellowship will continue to advance Levine Cancer Institute’s efforts to shape health outcomes and advance this specialized field of medicine for the next generations.
