It is encouraging when we receive a gift from a generous donor that allows us to say “yes to one more child, family, or deserving adult who can benefit from the services provided by Carolinas HealthCare System. Because of you, Carolinas HealthCare Foundation has the opportunity to impact healthcare in this community in a unique and personal way. Every day, we witness the influence our donors have on the lives of patients who are treated throughout the Carolinas. We see, first-hand, how the latest technology, research, programs, and amenities that our donors fund are helping to change the delivery of healthcare. Whether gifts are received from grateful patients, devoted youth, professional athletes, large corporations, small businesses, or families – our benefactors are all committed to a common cause: providing the finest healthcare services to patients in need, regardless of where they may live or their ability to pay. Often our donors are the driving force behind a life-changing project or initiative. They deserve the credit for helping Carolinas HealthCare Foundation raise more than $18 million in 2015. Ultimately, our success is determined not solely by the buildings we help construct, but by the investment Carolinas HealthCare System and our donors make in the people and programs that bring each facility to life. Our goal is to offer critical support that enables Carolinas HealthCare System professionals to bring caring, commitment, integrity and teamwork to a vitally important healing mission. The motivating force behind all of this activity is fulfilling our duty to meet community needs. Thank you for your consideration of support to help us meet this mission. There is no way to fully express our gratitude for your loyalty. Our team at Carolinas HealthCare Foundation is inspired by the dedication and generosity of donors like yourself who answer the call to give without fail. We hope that some of your most meaningful stories will move others to join us as we continue to make an extraordinary impact in the Carolinas and beyond. With gratitude,

System, and in turn, to the community we serve. On August 26, 2015, Carolinas HealthCare Foundation announced a $3 million commitment from The Leon Levine Foundation to initiate a new psychiatry residency program at Carolinas Medical Center.
As a result of the grant, Carolinas HealthCare System will further develop the most comprehensive, integrated behavioral health delivery system in the region, offering inpatient, outpatient, school-based, crisis, and residential treatment programs.
The new initiative presents Carolinas HealthCare with an exciting opportunity to comprehensively educate and train talented young psychiatrists for its
expanding behavioral health programs. The four-year accredited program, named The Sandra and Leon Levine Psychiatry Residency Program, will ultimately involve 12 medical residents each year, helping meet a pressing need for talented physicians providing behavioral health services in this region.
4 “We are deeply honored to have Sandra and Leon Levine associated with this initiative as well as some of the most distinctive healthcare facilities within Carolinas HealthCare System,” said Michael Tarwater, President and CEO of Carolinas HealthCare System. The Levines, along with their children, also committed $3 million in 2014 to establish the Mindy Ellen Levine Behavioral Health Center in Davidson.
The new residency program embodies the steadfast commitment by The Leon Levine Foundation to help Carolinas HealthCare System expand mental health services and education, as well as to address the behavioral health crisis in this region and build a model for healthcare organizations across the country.
Enhanced academic programs bring positive recognition, the latest research, and the highest quality physicians to our System and the region. We are deeply grateful for the extraordinary generosity and philanthropic vision of The Leon Levine Foundation. Sandra and Leon Levine C A R O L I N A S

Cancer Research
A loyal, longtime friend of Levine Children’s Hospital, The Martin Truex Jr. Foundation helped the Ryan Seacrest Studios open its doors, and established The Martin Truex Jr. Pediatric Special Needs Fund to provide financial assistance to hospitalized families in need. Today, the Foundation is also providing significant funding to advance pediatric and ovarian cancer research.

In response to Sherry’s yearlong journey battling cancer, the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation expanded its mission to include raising awareness and funds for ovarian cancer research. In September 2015, the Foundation sponsored the annual Stiletto Sprint, which benefits ovarian cancer research, patient support programs, education, and awareness at Levine Cancer Institute.
We are indebted to Martin, Sherry, and the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation for their enduring commitment to cancer care throughout Carolinas HealthCare System.

When five-year-old William Hughes fell off his scooter and hit his head, Kelly and Mike Hughes noticed that something wasn’t right. They immediately rushed William to the Emergency Department at Levine Children’s Hospital. Once they arrived, doctors discovered that William had experienced some bleeding in his

brain, so they admitted him to the children's hospital. There, throughout the weekend, William remained in the caring hands of nurses and physicians. Just days after being wheeled into the emergency department with a head trauma, William walked out of Levine Children’s Hospital.
8
Kelly and Mike Hughes felt very fortunate for the care their family received and were immediately compelled to give back. After learning of a need for a new pediatric ambulance at Levine Children’s Hospital, Kelly and Mike reached out to their family’s foundation, the Elsie & Marvin Dekelboum Family Foundation. Their generous gift of $349,000 funded a new pediatric ambulance that will be in use and providing life-saving emergency care beginning in early 2016.
Thanks to one child’s experience, and the generosity of his family, thousands of local children will benefit from timely and specialized care during pediatric medical emergencies.

Since becoming a corporate partner in 2008, Morris-Jenkins has become one of the most loyal and gracious friends to Levine Children’s Hospital and has
MORRIS-JENKINS
impacted thousands of families in our region.
Morris-Jenkins first pledged their support of Levine Children’s Hospital by making a commitment of $500,000 to underwrite key elements of the hospital’s Child Life Program, which is dedicated to restoring a sense of normalcy to the lives of hospitalized children. Notably, Morris-Jenkins has funded the special recognition program designed to help patients celebrate special milestones, such as the end of chemotherapy, a successful transplant surgery, or even a patient’s birthday. Gifts from Morris-Jenkins have also supported special programs for patient families, colorful murals at the hospital, and the Seacrest Studios. Recently, Morris-Jenkins was also the presenting sponsor of the “Give Here for Kids Here” telethon, which aired on WCNC in August 2015.
11
Leading the charge in the company’s support of the hospital is Dewey Jenkins, owner of Morris-Jenkins, who also serves as a member of the Levine Children’s Hospital’s Board of Ambassadors. Dewey and his well-known colleague “Bobby” visit Levine Children’s Hospital often, and have even filmed one of their commercials while onsite with patients and families.
The company’s employees are also engaged hospital volunteers, providing year-round support by participating in team fundraising efforts, and answering phones during the telethon. Through this philanthropic partnership, Morris-Jenkins is reinforcing its long-standing commitment to the Charlotte area. "This community has blessed us immensely,” said owner Dewey Jenkins. “What better way to give back than through an organization that helps kids?"
Morris-Jenkins’ “Bobby” and owner, Dewey Jenkins, join WCNC-TV’s Larry Sprinkle for the day-long telethon at Levine Children’s Hospital.

B THE JAMES R. AND BRONNIE L. BRASWELL TRUST
A legacy of compassion and commitment to helping others lives on through generous contributions made by The James R. and Bronnie L. Braswell Trust to support behavioral health and cancer care in the Carolinas.
Carolinas HealthCare System Anson
In 2015 The Braswell Trust awarded $75,000 to Carolinas HealthCare System Anson that will expand critically needed behavioral health services to patients and families of Anson County by integrating mental health screenings and virtual health services in the primary care setting. As a
12
result, healthcare providers will be better equipped to address the shortage of mental health services in Anson County through programs that promote healing, provide education, and improve detection of mental illness. This gift supports an enduring commitment by Carolinas HealthCare System to transform behavioral health across the Carolinas. Also in 2015, The Braswell Trust awarded $25,000 to the Carolinas Breast Cancer Fund at Levine Cancer Institute to expand access to breast cancer screenings for lower income women of Anson County as part of Levine Cancer Institute’s Project Pink initiative. Carolinas HealthCare System Anson plays a vital role to the community, offering medical care to all patients, regardless of their ability to pay. This includes potentially life-saving diagnostic screenings to detect breast cancer or risk of cancer among

women in the community. Through these meaningful gifts, The Braswell Trust continues to impact the Anson County community.

At the end of the Wells Fargo Championship, the polite clapping, collective cheers, and long drives result in a victory for cancer patients at Levine Children’s Hospital. Since its inception, Champions for Education, Inc. – the non-profit host organization that operates the Wells Fargo Championship – has been a dedicated supporter of Levine Children’s Hospital. Beginning in 2010, Champions for Education has commited several hundred thousand
dollars to the hospital to fund clinical cancer research efforts, making the Wells Fargo Championship a founding member of the Carolinas Kids Cancer Research Coalition. Collectively, this Coalition has raised millions of dollars to help bring early-stage clinical cancer research trials to Levine Children’s Hospital. In 2015, Levine Children’s Hospital also received 25 flat-screen televisions, an additional generous gift from the Wells Fargo Championship. The TV’s were installed in patient/family areas throughout the hospital, adding the comforts of home for patients and families during their hospital stay.

In 2015, The Children’s Medical Fund of Foundation For The Carolinas continued its legacy of support to Levine Children’s Hospital with a $100,000 donation in support of cancer research, as well as generous support for the hospital’s art therapy program. Their gift is enabling researchers to monitor young cancer survivors who – as a result of
THE CHILDREN’S MEDICAL FUND
chemotherapy – have an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Now, rather than having blood pressure readings taken periodically in the doctor’s office, at risk patients are being steadily observed through ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. This allows for
more accurate readings and can help improve early intervention and treatment of hypertension. Doctors at Levine Children's Hospital hope to demonstrate the efficacy of this procedure and make it the standard of care. In addition, The Children’s Medical Fund provided support for an art therapist to work with young patients in the hospital and provide a means of creative expression, distraction, and communication, all in a safe, friendly environment. These gifts demonstrate The Children’s Medical Fund’s robust commitment to children’s healthcare. Established in 1979 by Kaye and Bill McMullen, the Fund honors the life of their daughter Amy, who passed away at age 14. The McMullens were grateful for the medical care their daughter had received, and today, patients and families at Levine Children’s Hospital continue to benefit from their generosity.

W BRADLEY & ELIZABETH W I N E R F A M I LY
Generous gifts from the Bradley and Elizabeth Winer family in 2015 will help expand the Child Life program to the adult neuro-intensive care unit at Carolinas Medical Center, as well as provide for aesthetic enhancements to the emergency department at Charlotte Behavioral Health. Hundreds of children visit adults in the neuro-intensive care unit at Carolinas Medical Center each year. Until 2015, Carolinas Medical Center was unable to provide support services to address their developmental, Bradley and Elizabeth Winer
emotional, social, and psychological needs. Now, thanks to the commitment from the Winer family, Carolinas Medical Center will become one of just a handful of programs in the country designated to provide support services specifically for children of adult patients. One full-time Child Life Specialist will now be dedicated to the neuro-intensive care unit with the hopes of improving the overall patient experience. This staff member will be available to provide psychosocial assessments, plans of care, diagnosis preparation, bereavement resources, holistic coping, therapeutic play, and more, in a child-friendly environment. The Winer Family also understood the need for enhancing the environment in the emergency department at Charlotte Behavioral Health in order to best serve patients and families. Their gift is helping renovate the facility
Improving Environments of Care
to create a more therapeutic, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing environment. By incorporating resources such as natural light and lighting systems, cheerful and varied colors and textures, soothing artwork, and comfortable furnishings, the behavioral health center is reinforcing the recovery focus of its programs. We acknowledge with great appreciation, the Winers’ commitment to quality, satisfaction, and overall healing environments for the patients and families served by Carolinas HealthCare System. Children’s Hospital during the "Dare to Dream" capital campaign, pledging significant support for the Children’s Emergency Department. Staff and patients alike express gratitude for RE/MAX’s charitable donations, which have made a tremendous impact, from enhancing the design of the space, to funding specialized equipment that is just the right size for the youngest patients. To date, RE/MAX has collectively raised over $1 million for Levine Children’s Hospital through its Children’s Miracle Network partnership, and it didn’t slow down in 2015. In addition to raising proceeds from "miracle home" sales, RE/MAX Executive, the largest contributor to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in the Carolinas, brought in over $63,000 for Levine

C JOHN CROSLAND, JR.
In 2015, Charlotte native John Crosland, Jr., an illustrious businessman, and
18
a philanthropic leader, passed away after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was known for strengthening the community in which he lived, specifically through supporting affordable housing, education programs for those with learning difficulties, and medical research for life-threatening diseases. Mr. Crosland and his family have had tremendous impact on Carolinas HealthCare System’s medical research initiatives with generous gifts to various funds, including the Carolinas Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Endowment, Levine Children’s Hospital, Carolinas Back Pain Research Endowment, and Carolinas ALS Endowment. We take this opportunity to honor Mr. Crosland’s charitable giving legacy and to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Crosland family.

In 2015, Carolinas HealthCare Foundation shared in the loss of two advocates for Levine Cancer Institute: Former Carolinas HealthCare System executive Russell Guerin, who lost his 11-year battle with melanoma; and Dr. Teresa Flippo-Morton, a distinguished breast cancer expert and skilled surgeon who lost her battle with pancreatic cancer. They both leave behind a tremendous legacy of support for medical research and physician education.
F TERESA FLIPPO-MORTON, MD
Dr. Teresa Flippo-Morton led a distinguished career as a surgeon, and she was equally respected as a mentor to the residents and fellows with whom she worked. In honor of Dr. Flippo Morton’s dedicated years of service to Levine Cancer Institute, Carolinas HealthCare Foundation established the Teresa Flippo-Morton, M.D. Surgical Oncology Fund to advance surgical oncology research, education, and treatment programs associated with Levine Cancer Institute. The Fund has already received contributions totaling nearly $100,000.
19
G RUSSELL C. GUERIN
Russell Guerin devoted his public life to health care, and contributed greatly to Carolinas HealthCare System’s overall growth strategy for over 25 years. In 2013, close family friends Molly and Banks Bourne, Mandy and Todd Houser, and Sherrard and John Georgius, Jr. established the Russell C. Guerin Melanoma Research Fund in his honor. Russell lost his long battle with melanoma in 2015 but this subtantial fund lives on to continually benefit Levine Cancer Institute’s research targeted to better understand and enhance the use of immunotherapy and related treatments for this devastating disease.
