I
look back on 2018 with awe and inspiration as we celebrate the generous
benefactors who make our job at Atrium Health Foundation so rewarding. These are the people who see a need, have the passion, and wish to help us achieve what might otherwise be beyond our grasp. I’m awed by our virtual care clinics, which are addressing a critical need for advanced primary care in rural areas; and inspired by the generous corporate support and collaboration for this community initiative. I’m also awed by our high-tech printing lab where cardiologists and surgeons print 3-D hearts to help determine a patient’s course of treatment. The grateful patient family whose

Patient Care I
n 2018, Atrium Health Foundation received transformative gifts that will have a profound and immediate impact on the quality of patient care – both locally and around the world. From a gift to support women’s health in Eastern Europe to the significant commitment that established a rare and solid tumor program at Levine Children’s Hospital, our donors stepped forward, inspired change, and demonstrated their passion for the health of their community.

When young Isabella Santos was being treated for cancer, she was fortunate to have access to the most cutting-edge treatments available for her rare type of the disease – neuroblastoma. Unfortunately, she and her family had to travel out of state for the care they needed, adding expenses and the inconvenience of long-distance care – all at a time when the pressures of Isabella’s illness were already burdensome enough. Erin Santos, now Executive Director and President of the Isabella Santos Foundation (ISF), came away from the experience determined to do whatever she could to spare other families similar stresses. She set a personal goal of bringing the best cancer therapies available to Charlotte. By 2017 the foundation named in Isabella’s honor had raised enough money to donate $1 million to Levine Children’s Hospital to create the region’s only MIBG suite. The suite, now completed, includes a lead-lined room where neuroblastoma patients receive special radiation treatments in isolation. Then in April 2018 ISF took their giving to a new level, pledging $5 million to establish The Isabella Santos Foundation Rare & Solid Tumor Program at Levine Children’s Hospital. The program will oversee care for all solid tumors, rare tumors and MIBG therapy, as well as related clinical and scientific research. It is expected to serve nearly one-third of the 135 new cancer patients who are treated at Levine Children’s each year. Although Isabella lost her battle with neuroblastoma at the age of seven, her spirit now lives on every time a child with a similar diagnosis has access to the care they need, close to home.

“It is virtually impossible to advance the types of pediatric cancer research and treatments that we truly need, based solely on regular funding,” explains Dr. Javier Oesterheld, Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation Endowed Chair in Cancer and Blood Disorders. “That’s why we are so indebted to the Isabella Santos Foundation and its supporters throughout the region. Their collective investments will allow our program to flourish and be among the very best in the entire nation.”

THE DUKE ENDOWMENT $1.8 MILLION IMPROVING PUBLIC HEALTH BY ENHANCING ACCESS FOR TRADITIONALLY UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS The Duke Endowment, one of the most well-known and respected charitable organizations in the country, has been supporting innovative healthcare programs in Charlotte for decades. Its financial commitments to Atrium Health have grown steadily in more recent years, in recognition of the health system’s growing role as a leading healthcare innovator. In 2018, Atrium Health Foundation received a record financial commitment from The Endowment: Three grants, totaling nearly $1.8 million to improve public health by enhancing access for traditionally underserved populations; increasing the emphasis on preventive care; and expanding the types of care that can be delivered to patients closer to their homes. The largest among these – and the largest single grant Atrium has ever received from the Endowment – was a $1.1 million grant for a new cardiac care initiative, “Perfect Care,” being piloted by Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute. Targeted for six hospitals within the Atrium Health network, the program aims to improve patient access and education while reducing the disparities that can occur in providing followup care after cardiac surgery. It will be among the first projects of its kind, nationally, and will focus on engaging patients and their families through remote telemonitoring. A separate $480,000 grant will support expansion of “food pharmacies” operated by the ONE Charlotte Health Alliance, a collaboration between Atrium Health, Novant Health and the Mecklenburg County Health Department. The grant will support two clinic-based emergency food pharmacies, as well as two refrigerated food vehicles. Together, these food pharmacies will provide a healthy food assistance option for the residents of economically challenged areas. Additionally, the Department of Oral Medicine at Carolinas Medical Center received a $200,000 boost to integrate dental care at Levine Children’s Hospital, ensuring patients who have lacked access to this service now receive optimal care that is essential prior to surgery or transplant.

of North Carolina to address access to healthcare in vulnerable communities. A $750,000 commitment is supporting the operations of two mobile health units deployed to some of Charlotte’s most underserved neighborhoods. The units, managed by ONE Charlotte Health Alliance, will offer advanced primary care services, including screenings, dental care and behavioral health services. Blue Cross and Blue Shield NC committed an additional $750,000 to expand the number of schoolbased virtual clinics in Cleveland County. A pilot virtual clinic measurably reduced the number of early school dismissals related to daytime illness, as well as the number of visits to emergency departments for non-emergency situations and connected more children with primary care providers. The virtual clinic program was developed through a partnership between Levine Children’s Shelby Children’s Clinic, Atrium Health’s Community Health division, the Cleveland County Public Health Center, and the Cleveland County School District. With support from BCBS NC the program will ultimately serve all elementary and middle schools in Cleveland County.

PEDIATRIC CANCER RESEARCH, LEVINE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL The Wells Fargo Championship attracts some of the biggest names in golf to Charlotte each spring, competing for the big “win.” In 2018, the true winners were pediatric cancer patients at Levine Children’s Hospital, who benefited from a sizable donation from Champions for Education – the nonprofit host organization that operates the Championship. For a decade, Champions for Education has generously supported the hospital’s cancer research efforts, which ensure the availability of novel treatment options for patients right in our community. To date, the Wells Fargo Championship has collectively donated $1.5 million in support of cancer research at Levine Children’s.

Mr. Goode served for 20 years on the Board of Commissioners of Atrium Health’s predecessor organization, Carolinas HealthCare System. He also served on the board of the Carolinas HealthCare Foundation (now Atrium Health Foundation), starting in 2007. Mr. Goode and his wife Jane had a long history of support for Levine Children’s Hospital, dating back to the “Dare to Dream” campaign in 2007. They shared an interest in initiatives aimed at finding better treatments and cures for young cancer patients.
ROSALIE FOUNTAIN ESTATE LEVINE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL Although Rosalie M. Fountain – a former resident of Charlotte – had no personal connection to Levine Children’s Hospital, she felt strongly that more needed to be done to support children and advance cancer research. One of 10 children in her family, Ms. Fountain was just 11 years old when she lost both of her parents within a day of each other. Soon after, she and her siblings were split up across the country, and that experience impacted her throughout life. In particular, she developed a soft spot for children. Accordingly, she created a unique legacy for them by leaving a portion of her residual estate to Atrium Health Foundation. Ms. Fountain’s generous gift will benefit the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Program at Levine Children’s Hospital. Those funds will be supporting the team of physicians, nurses, child life specialists, social workers, research coordinators and support staff who work together to enhance the lives of children enduring serious illness.
