Fuji-Torii, established 60 years ago, produces folding screens, each of which is elaborately hand painted exclusively for Fuji-Torii by a professional artist using traditional brush-painting techniques. n March 12, 2011, with the opening of the northern route, the entire Kyushu Shinkansen (bullet train) railway was completed, thus completing the Shinkansen railway connection from Aomori Prefecture in the northern end of Honshu island to Kagoshima Prefecture in the southern end of Kyushu island. (*There is no direct line connecting from ShinAomori, or from Tokyo, to Kagoshima Chuo Station). With completion of the high-speed train system, unique trains for tourists have become more and more popular all over Japan. In particular, this article will take you on a railway trip in Kyushu, where many unique trains designed by Eiji Mitooka (industrial designer) are carrying both tourists and locals.

Hakata Station JR Hakata City opened on March 3, 2011, coinciding with the full-service opening of the Kyushu Shinkansen. Encompassing Hakata Hankyu Department Store and Amu-Plaza Hakata, which consists of 229 specialty shops and the first Tokyu Hands (crafts, DIY goods shop) in Kyushu, JR Hakata City is one of the largest station buildings in Japan, and is becoming a hot spot for people all around Kyushu to visit. 博多站 JR博多城配合九州新幹線的全線通車，於2011年3月3 月開幕。成為日本規模最大的車站大樓，不只是福岡，整個九州的目光焦點都集中於此。內有博多阪急百貨公司及 229家品牌專賣店的「Amu Plaza」中，還有首次在九州地區開店的「Tokyu Hands（東急手創館）」，匯總了九州各地美食的地下街樓層吸引了許多人潮。位於9樓及10 樓的美食街中還有許多家首次入主九州的餐廳，氣氛十分熱絡。頂樓有間神社，可將福岡市內一覽無遺。

and 10th floors, many of which made their first opening of shops in Kyushu. On the rooftop, there is a shrine, and you can enjoy a sweeping view of the whole of Fukuoka City. Hakata Station is located in Fukuoka City. It is rare that the biggest station in a city isn’t named after the city itself. Why this happened is an interesting story. Hakata was one of the biggest mercantile cities in Japan, developing from around the 12th century, whereas Fukuoka was the castle and samurai town of the powerful Kuroda Clan in the Edo period (1603-1867). A big argument about naming of the new city at the time of the merging of these two areas in 1890 resulted in the birth of “Fukuoka City,” not “Hakata City.” A compromise created Hakata Station, allowing the name of “Hakata” to remain. “Hakata” is often used in names of traditional things and events, such as Hakata dolls, Hakata textiles, and Hakata Gion Yamakasa (festival), and there is a Hakata Ward in Fukuoka City. Fukuoka City is the biggest city in Kyushu with a population of over 1,450,000. You will never get tired of strolling around the city looking for something interesting. It is also famous as a town where you can enjoy delicious foods, such as fresh seafood, Hakata Ramen, motsu nabe (stew of giblets), and mizutaki (stew of chicken and vegetables). About 150 yatai (food

stalls) serve a wide variety of foods, including ramen, oden, yakitori, and Western dishes. Yatai which open for business on both sides of the Naka River flowing in the middle of the city are famous, but ones in the downtown Tenjin are recommended for yatai beginners. The downtown area of Fukuoka City, called Tenjin, which is the biggest downtown in Kyushu, is crowded with department stores and specialty shops. Located next to Tenjin on the west is the Daimyo area with boutiques catering to the young crowd for and fancy restaurants. The Nakasu area has a large shopping and entertainment complex, Canal City Hakata, as well as Kushida Shrine where the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival is held.

Hakata Kumamoto: Kyushu Shinkansen The Kyushu Shinkansen runs from Hakata Station to Kumamoto Station. If you are a railway enthusiast, you will be really excited to be at Hakata Station. Various Shinkansen series trains, including the 700 series and 300 series as well as the N700 series of the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines and the 500 series of the Sanyo Shinkansen Line, arrive at and leave from Hakata Station. The Sakura and Mizuho services of the Kyusyu Shinkansen Line use the N700 series cars (ex-

cluding some cars) painted in light blue, which creates a very different impression from that of the N700 series cars used on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines. Arranged in two rows of two seats next to each other, reserved seats in regular cars are as comfortable as those in green cars. The 800 series cars are mainly used for the Tsubame services on the Kyusyu Shinkansen Line (excluding some cars). The interior design is Japanese, and seats are arranged spaciously in two rows of two seats next to each other in all the regular cars (no green cars). Tsubame, which starts from Hakata Station, arrives at Shin-Tosu Station first. Tosu Premium Outlets® shopping mall is near the station. The next station is Kurume. Kurume is said to be the home of tonkotsu ramen (ramen with a pork bone-based broth), and has many popular B-class gourmet dishes, including yakitori. Ishibashi Museum of Art, which is famous for its Japanese painting and artifacts collections, is located in Kurume City. After leaving Kurume Station, the train runs through the Chikugo Plain, stopping at Chikugofunagoya Station, Shin-Omuta Station, and Shin-Tamana Station, and then arrives at Kumamoto Station in just 51 minutes. Kumamoto City, with a population of 730,000, is the main city in the central region of Kyushu. There are many tourist attractions, including the magnificent Kumamoto Castle,

博多站位於福岡市內。很少看到都市名稱跟主要車站名稱不同，不過這也是有原由的。博多是個從12世紀左右以日本數一數二的商業之都而興起的地方。而在江戶時代（1603年～1867年）原為黑田52萬石的城邑都市的是福岡。在1890年要晉升為市的時候，到底要將名稱取成「博多市」好呢，還是「福岡市」好，引起了很大的爭議，最後的結果決定叫做「福岡市」。而退而求其次保留了博多之名，「博多站」也因此誕生。許多傳統文物如「博多人偶」「博多織」「博多衹園山笠」等仍保有博多之名。（在福岡市內還有個博多區。）人口超過145萬人，為九州最大的都市的福岡市有很多好玩的地方。做為日本相當出名的美食聖地，像是新鮮的海產、博多拉麵、牛腸鍋、雞肉火鍋都相當受歡迎。市內約有150家小吃攤位，除了拉麵、黑輪、串烤等之外還有供應西餐的攤位。流經市中心部位的那珂川河畔的攤販小吃街最有名，但第一次來的話我們還推薦福岡的鬧區-天神。天神有許多百貨公司及專賣店林立

which is one of the Three Great Castles of Japan, Suizenji Park, Mount Aso, an active volcano in Japan with one of the largest calderas in the world, and many hot springs. Kumamoto is famous for unique local dishes, and its specialty is horse meat dishes. Other unique dishes are karashi renkon (deep fried lotus root covered with mustard paste), Kumamoto-born taipien, which is Chinese soup with harusame (thin noodles made from mung bean starch and water), and Kumamoto ramen with thick white tonkotsu soup and garlic. Take your time to enjoy the tastes of Kumamoto.

Kumamoto Hitoyoshi: Limited Express Kumagawa Limited express Kumagawa leaves Kumamoto Station bound for Hitoyoshi Station. The train body is colored red, symbolizing the Land of Fire, the nickname of Kumamoto (because of Mount Aso volcano). There is a special SL (steam locomotive) service called SL Hitoyoshi running only on special weekends and holidays. SL Hitoyoshi is the 8620 SL series, Japan’s first mass-produced SL series, which was adored by people and called by the affectionate nickname “Hachi-Roku” (eight-six). Many SL fans gather here to enjoy a nostalgic ride on SL Hitoyoshi. After leaving Kumamoto Station, limited express Kumagawa runs on the Kagoshima Line to Yatsushiro Station. Yatsushiro City is the second biggest city in Kumamoto Prefecture, and is famous for “Ayuya Sandai,” a nationally popular ekiben (railway bento box

lunch). After Yatsushiro Station, the train goes on the Hisatsu Line to Hitoyoshi Station, overlooking the Kuma River, one of the three most rapid rivers of Japan. The river flows slowly near Yatsushiro where it is wide, and then runs rapidly near Hitoyoshi where as the width decreases. There are people enjoying boat rides and rafting on the river, as well as wild birds resting on the rocks in the river and you might see deer walking in the fields and hills beyond. Hitoyoshi, which is located almost exactly halfway on the Hisatsu Line, is famous for hot springs and shochu (Japanese distilled liquor typically made from barley, sweet potatoes, or rice). At the station, ekiben sellers walk around with ekiben boxes stacked on trays hanging from their necks in front of them. “Ayusushi” and “Kurimeshi” are the famous ekiben of Hitoyoshi. An automaton clock in the shape of a castle welcomes visitors in front of the station. There are hot springs dotted along the Kuma River. Kuma Shochu, which is made from high quality rice grown on the fertile land and with the clear water of the Kuma River, is the result of more than 400 years of traditional knowledge and techniques. Some shochu distillers are willing to show you around their distilleries.

Hitoyoshi Yoshimatsu Station: Isaburo/Shinpei Isaburo/Shinpei runs between Hitoyoshi Station and Yoshimatsu Station on the Hisatsu Line, which opened in 1909. This unique name derives from the Telecommunications Minister

and the head of the Railway Bureau at that time, Isaburo Yamagata and Shinpei Goto, respectively. Serving as a sightseeing train as well as carrying the locals, this train with a special retro interior provides sightseeing announcements and slows down around famous spots along the route. Soon after leaving Hitoyoshi, the train runs on a switchback and loop course at Okoba Station. At Yatake Station, which is located at the highest point among the stations on the Hisatsu Line, there is a SL Museum where passengers can see a JNR Class D51 SL during the stop at the station. After going through the biggest tunnel on the Hisatsu Line, Yatake Daiichi Tunnel (2,096 m), you will come upon one of the “Three Best Sceneries from a Train Window in Japan.” It will give you a sweeping view of the Ebino Basin and Mount Kirishima, and perhaps Sakurajima volcano if the weather is fine. The second switchback at Masaki Station will please you if you are a railway enthusiast. Kofuku no Kane (Bell of Happiness) on the platform of Masaki Station is said to bring those who ring the bell good fortune. Isaburo Train soon arrives at the terminal station, Yoshimatsu. When Isaburo runs back to Hitoyoshi Station, it is called Shinpei. Isaburo and Shinpei run leisurely through the beautiful natural surroundings of Southern Kyushu.

Yoshimatsu Kagoshima-Chuo: Limited Express Hayato no Kaze The Nippo Line goes from Yoshimatsu Station to Kagoshima-Chuo Station via Hayato Station, the terminal station of the Hisatsu Line. You can get on limited express Hayato no Kaze at Yoshimatsu Station. The train painted black all-over embodies the strong Satsuma spirit. Soon after leaving Yoshimatsu Station, the train arrives at Osumi-Yokogawa Station. OsumiYokogawa Station and the next Kareigawa Station have two of the oldest wooden station buildings in Kyushu, both of which turned 100 years old in 2003. After passing Hayato Station, the train runs on the Nippo Line to KagoshimaChuo Station. You can enjoy a great view of Sakurajima volcano fuming beyond Kinko Bay (also called Kagoshima Bay). Kagoshima-Chuo Station at the end of the line is also the terminal station of the Kyushu Shinkansen. Born in Satsuma (Kagoshima) in 1828, Saigo Takamori largely contributed to establishing the new Meiji government by taking part in the bloodless overthrow of the Tokugawa shogunate and other events in the modernization of Japan. His bronze statue is on Shiroyama hill in Kagoshima City. The observation deck on Shiroyama gives panoramic views of Sakurajima, Kinko Bay, and Kagoshima City. Sengan-en is a beautiful park with connections to the Shimazu Family, the lords of Satsuma domain. Nearby Sengan-en, which formerly was a villa of the Shimazu Family, there are a historical museum, Shoko Shuseikan, which

exhibits the history of the Shimazu Family and Kagoshima, and Iso-Kogeikan traditional glassworks shop. The biggest downtown area in Kagoshima is Tenmonkan. There is no end of things to see and do and try for visitors to Kagoshima. In addition to the nationwide famous kurobuta black pork dishes, Kagoshima Ramen, and satsuma-age (deep fried fishcake), Kagoshima has many seafood dishes with seafood from the ocean surrounding it. Among a wide variety of Kagoshima Shochu, imo-shochu (sweet potato shochu) is especially famous as a good companion of Kagoshima gourmet food. Shirokuma (literally meaning polar bear) is Kagoshima’s original summer dessert, which serves lots of fruit on shaved ice covered with condensed milk.

Kagoshima-Chuo Ibusuki: Limited Express Ibusuki no Tamatebako A limited express Ibusuki no Tamatebako running from Kagoshima-Chuo Station to Ibusuki Station via the Ibusuki Makurazaki Line was just introduced on March 13, 2011, and attracts lots of attention with its unusualness. The train is colored white on the ocean side and black on the mountain side, and gives off white smoke from the doors upon opening and closing when the train stops at stations. Providing fine views of Kinko Bay and Sakurajima, the train takes passengers to Ibusuki, which is famous for sandsteamed hot springs on the beach. There is also a footbath in front of Ibusuki Station. Ibusuki Hakusuikan is a Japanese-style hotel surrounded by beautiful pine trees. Satsuma

Denshokan Museum, located on the premises, introduces the history and culture of Satsuma mainly through beautiful art collections. A little further down along the run from Ibusuki to Makurazaki is Mount Kaimon-dake, which is often referred to as “Satsuma Fuji.” At the southernmost tip of the Satsuma Peninsula, which is called Nagasakibana, there is Nagasakibana Parking Garden, a zoo/botanical garden which recreates a beautiful and exotic “tropical paradise.”

Ibusuki Hakata: Kagoshima Line/Hisatsu Orange Railway/Kyushu Shinkansen

After leaving Ibusuki and returning to Kagoshima-Chuo Station, the Kagoshima Line takes you to Sendai Station. The Hisatsu Orange Railway operates between Sendai Station in Kagoshima Prefecture and Yatsushiro Station in Kumamoto Prefecture. The train stops at many stations on the way to Yatsushiro, giving you lots of time to enjoy the view of the Yatsushiro Sea. One of the areas along the line is Izumi, which is famous as a winter home of cranes. From Yatsushiro Station, the Kagoshima Line will take you to Kumamoto Station. Then, it takes only 33 minutes from Kumamoto Station to Hakata Station by N700 train Sakura. The opening of the entire Kyushu Shinkansen has brought Kumamoto and Kagoshima closer to other areas of Kyushu. You can save money by using special passes/tickets, such as JR Kyushu Rail Pass (not valid for the Hisatsu Orange Railway). Enjoy railway travelling in Kyushu!

Shizuoka City Let’s start from JR Shizuoka Station. A walk of about 10 minutes from the station brings you to Sumpu Park, which contains the ruins of Sumpu Castle built by Tokugawa Ieyasu, who established the Edo shogunate, in 1585. There is a beautiful Japanese Garden named “Momijiyama Teien” on the premises. Shizuoka is famous for producing figure models, such as plastic models. The history of models production began with the advanced wood processing industry in the area, which was effectively applied to plastic models production. Shizuoka Hobby Square opened in front of Shizuoka Station in 2011. The permanent exhibition area displays various plastic models and figure models, including Gundam figures, car figures, and military-related figures. Some of the latest products of local manufacturers may be available exclusively at the official shop. Nihondaira, at an altitude of 307 meters, is famous for the view of Shizuoka City, Mount Fuji, and Suruga Bay, as well as for the night view. Get on a ropeway car from the top of Nihondaira to Kunozan Toshogu Shrine, which Izu Peninsula

enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu. The premises contain many structures that have been designated national important cultural properties. The museum exhibits weapons, armor, and historical documents of successive Tokugawa shoguns. Miho no Matsubara (literally meaning “Pine Groves of Miho”) on the Miho Peninsula in the Shimizu area is famous for the hagoromo (robe of feathers) legend, the legend of a swan maiden. Stand on the beach to enjoy the view of Hagoromo no Matsu, a pine tree looking out toward Mount Fuji, where it is said the beautiful celestial maiden hung her robe. Yui used to be a post town of the old Tokaido Highway. Tokaido Hiroshige Museum houses works of Utagawa Hiroshige (aka Ando Hiroshige), one of the greatest Japanese ukiyo-e artists of the Edo Period (1603 to 1867). Satta Pass, which is depicted by Hiroshige in the famous series of drawings called the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, is a perfect place to enjoy the view of Mount Fuji. Suruga Bay is famous for being the only place in Japan to catch sakuraebi (small pink shrimp). The ocean surface in the Yui area is beautifully tinted with pink color in the sakuraebi season. Crispy kakiage tempura made with fresh sakuraebi is truly exquisite! Don’t miss Shizuoka oden on your Shizuoka trip! This unique oden, which features a Shizuoka Oden black soup and ingredients on skewers, is served with toppings, such as dried bonito shavings and ground seaweed. There are many oden shops on the famous oden street, Aoba Yokocho. A bus ride of about 30 minutes from JR Shizuoka Station takes you to another post town of the old Tokaido Highway, called Mariko-juku. The long-established restaurant Chojiya serves its famous tororojiru, which is grated yam combined with flavorful soup. Sumpu Takumishuku in the same area is a tryit-yourself facility for making traditional crafts. There is also a famous store that first started to sell Shizuoka City’s local specialty, Abekawa mochi, a freshly-prepared rice cake covered with a mixture of dried soybean powder and sugar.

Shimada City In the Edo Period, building a bridge or crossing by boat over the Oi River was strictly prohibited for political reasons. The first bridge built over this river was Horai Bridge, constructed in 1879 and still in use. The bridge is registered in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s longest wooden walking bridge, with a length of 897 meters. A toll of 100 yen for using the bridge is charged. The area on the west side of the Oi River is one of the most famous Japanese tea production areas. Beautiful tea fields spread forth on the gentle slopes of the mountains. The Tea Museum called Ochanosato Museum in the Kanaya Area serves 90 kinds of tea from 30 countries all over the world, as well as the local fukamushi sencha, deep steamed green tea. Have a cup of tea and learn about the culture and history of tea. The Japanese garden and tearoom recreate the style of Kobori Enshu, who is known as a master of the Enshu school of the tea ceremony as well as an artist and lord during the 16th-17th century. Try-it-yourself lessons for making matcha (finelymilled green tea) and picking tea leaves are offered on the premises. The Oigawa Railway Line, extending from JR Kanaya Station to Senzu Station, is famous for its steam locomotive trains. Enjoy the sound of the steam whistle echoing in the mountains on the SL train running among the spreading tea fields and the Oi River. Limited express trains, which used to run on private railways in the Kansai Area, are also running on this line in their original colors. There are facilities where you can enjoy making matcha and experiencing a tea ceremony, as well as hot springs. Kawane Onsen Fureai no Izumi is a hot spring facility housing 11 baths for men and women into which fresh water is constantly supplied. This onsen is famous for having an open-air bath from which you can see SL trains running. At adjoining cottages, dining and lodging are available.

Kakegawa City Kakegawa Castle is said to have been built in the middle of the 15th century. The current castle tower was reconstructed in 1994 using the original methods. The top floor is a perfect vantage point for views overlooking the entire city. Kiwi Fruits Country Japan is Japan’s largest kiwi farm. The extensive site encompasses a number of kiwi trees and abundant nature. The farm produces various kiwi varieties all year round, along with seasonal fruit, including mikan (Japanese mandarin oranges), persimmons, and Kiyomi oranges, a hybrid of mikan and orange. Various nature programs are offered. You can learn lots about the local natural environment and people through the programs, and also about various local animals, including sheep, rabbits, and goats (Extra fees are required for fruit sampling and nature programs). 之旅的靜岡縣中部。靜岡就從JR靜岡站出發吧！駿府公園是1585年德川家康建立的駿府城舊址，公園裡有美麗的日本庭園及紅葉山庭園。靜岡是模型玩具等模型工業的聖地。原本靜岡的木材加工技術就相當發達，據說這項技術現在被活用在製作模型玩具上。2011年在靜岡站前誕生了「靜岡 Hobby Square」這間模型的博物館，可以欣賞從鋼彈到汽車、軍用機等各式各樣的模型。博物館內的專賣店還有機會搶先買到最新的模型商品喔！標高307公尺的日本平，可以眺望靜岡市街和駿河灣、雄偉的富士山，夜景也相當值得一看。從山頂可以搭乘纜車前往祭祀德川家康的久能山東照宮。除了可以欣賞到被指定為國家重要文化財的建築物群外，還可在博物館裡看到相當珍貴的德川歷代將軍的兵器和當時的文件、書籍等。位於清水的「三保之松原」因羽衣傳說而聞名。來看看傳說中的松樹和富士山。由比是舊東海道的驛站。東海道廣重美術館收藏江戶時代（1603～1867年）的浮世繪畫家歌川廣重的作品等。薩埵峠是眺望富士山最好的地點。日本國內只有駿河灣才捕得到櫻花蝦。由比在櫻花蝦盛產的時候，海面甚至會因此渲染成一片粉紅色。現炸的櫻花蝦天婦羅是天下第一美味。到靜岡來一定要嘗嘗靜岡黑輪喔！靜岡黑輪的特色是湯汁是黑色的，黑輪等都用竹籤串起，吃的時候要加上柴魚粉。在青葉橫丁上有不少黑輪店。 JR靜岡站搭巴士約30分鐘。丸子宿也是舊東海道的驛站。在丁子屋可以吃到有名的山藥汁。在附近的駿府匠宿可以體驗傳統工藝。在安倍川沿岸也有安倍川麻糬的發源店。

島田江戶時代，大井川曾經在政治上嚴禁架橋或渡舟。1879 年架起蓬萊橋，長度超過897公尺的蓬萊橋是世界最長的木造步道橋，登錄金氏世界紀錄。過橋需要付通行費100日圓。大井川的西邊是日本屬一屬二的日本茶產地。山嶺緩坡上可見到美麗的茶田風光。位於金谷地區的「茶之鄉博物館」裡可以實際接觸到世界上30個國家的90種茶葉並品味不同的茶香。在這裡，您可以在品味世界各地的茶及當地的深蒸煎茶之際學習關於茶的文化和歷史。庭園和茶室是重現昔時奠定遠州流「茶之湯（茶會）」根基、貴為諸侯的知名茶家小堀遠州的風格。在這裡還可以體驗製作抹茶或摘茶。從JR金谷站到千頭站之間的大井川鐵道是以有SL蒸氣火車行駛而聞名的鐵路路線。不妨坐在蒸氣火車上，眺望廣闊的茶田和大井川，一邊聆聽火車汽笛聲在峽谷間的迴響吧。在這條路線上還會有以前曾經在關西風靡一時的特急列車行駛。鐵路沿線有可以體驗製作抹茶和茶道的設施及溫泉。其中「川根溫泉交流之泉」擁有11處（包括男性用、女性用浴池在內）的浴池的溫泉設施，所有的浴池都是引自川根溫泉的源頭溫泉水，也是日本唯一一處可以邊看著SL蒸氣火車邊泡溫泉的地方，相當受到歡迎。位於隔壁的別墅除了提供餐點以外也可以住宿。掛川掛川城據說是15世紀中期建成。現在的天守閣是1994 年重新復原後的面貌，最頂樓可以一覽掛川的街景。「Kiwi Fruits Country Japan」（日本奇異果之鄉）是日本最大的奇異果園。廣大的園地裡種有大量的奇異果樹及豐富的大自然，一年四季都可以盡情享用「各式各樣的奇異果」。除此之外，在不同的季節裡還可以吃到橘子、柿子、清美橙等多種水果。此外，還能跟綿羊、兔子、山羊等小動物作近距離的接觸，並透過各種自然體驗課程，學習到自然和人類的關係。（食用水果和自然體驗課程部分需收費）在入口處有貓頭鷹前來迎接的掛川花鳥園，是一個可以在花開絢爛之中和鳥兒們嬉戲的主題樂園。讓許多鸚哥停靠在自己的肩膀或手臂上的餵食體驗，相信會成為旅途中難忘的回憶。此外，這裡的睡蓮池栽種了約100 種、600株的睡蓮，也相當值得一看。喜歡化妝品或是藝術的話則可以到資生堂企業資料館及Art House看看。在資料館可以一覽透過企業活動誕生的商品和宣傳文物等企業文化資產，而在隔壁的 Art House則是可以欣賞在東京銀座的資生堂展示廳展示過的繪畫和工藝品。

修善寺溫泉 Shuzenji Onsen

據弘法大師（774-835）開墾修禪寺時溫泉湧出說修善寺溫泉是伊豆最古老的溫泉，當初是

才興起的。桂川流經溫泉街的中心，溫泉旅館鱗次櫛比。位於桂川沿岸的獨鈷之湯是個免費泡腳的溫泉。開幕於 2000年的筥湯，是一間佇立在溫泉街的中心的一間木造平房模樣瀟灑的澡堂，遊客可輕鬆來此享受泡湯樂趣。泡完湯後攀登上併設的望樓的仰空樓，一邊欣賞眺望修禪寺的伽藍及溫泉街美景一邊乘涼讓人神清氣爽。地名由來的修禪寺是鎌倉幕府第二代將軍源賴家（1182-1204）被幽閉等頗有歷史淵源的寺院。寧靜的環境也深受文豪所愛，夏目漱石（1867-1916）等大文豪們創作出許多以修善寺為題材發揮的文學作品。從獨鈷之湯沿著桂川的竹林當中設有遊步道，可以一邊欣賞喫茶處及懷舊的防火監視高塔等漫步於此。在竹林中央有個很大的竹製圓形板凳座椅，可以讓人在此歇歇腳休息一下。在秋天修善寺自然公園紅葉林及修善寺紅之鄉匠之村、修善寺境內、桂川沿岸的竹林小徑的紅葉等，許多值得觀賞的景點。

huzenji Onsen is said to be the oldest hot spring in Izu, Shizuoka Prefecture. Legend has it that this hot spring started gushing out when Kobo-Daishi (774-835), aka Kukai, the founder of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, established Shuzen-ji Temple. The banks of the Katsura River that flows through the center of the onsen town are lined with hot spring hotels. One of them, Tokkono-yu, is a free footbath. Famous for its beautiful one-story wooden building, Hako-yu is a public onsen that opened in 2000 at the center of town. After taking a hot spring bath, cool down at the top of Gyokuro watchtower next to Hako-yu and take in the view of precincts of Shuzen-ji Temple and the hot spring town. The name Shuzenji comes from Shuzen-ji Temple, a temple with a long and distinguished history that includes the imprisonment of Minamoto no Yoriie (1182-1204), the second shogun (military leader) of the Kamakura Shogunate (1192-1333). The tranquil environment has attracted many great writers such as Natsume Soseki (1867-1916) and has led to a number of valuable literary works about Shuzenji by various writers. The walking path through a bamboo grove along Katsura River from Tokko-no-yu includes tearooms and an old fire tower and, in the middle of the grove, a large round bamboo bench that is a perfect place to take a rest and feel the tranquility of the area. Gyuniku no Yawata-maki Beef and vegetable rolls Ingredients (serves 4) Stock for cooking the burdock (#1) 2 cups dashi stock 2 tbsp soy sauce 3 tbsp sweet rice cooking wine (mirin)

Sauce (#2) 4 tbsp soy sauce 2 tbsp sugar 1½ tbsp mirin 2 tbsp sake Shichimi Japanese pepper

Cooking directions:

When scrubbing the burdock root, use a scrubbing brush and peel under running water.

Scrub the burdock root and peel. Cut into pieces 15 cm long. If the root is thick, cut it into four pieces lengthwise, and then cut into pieces about 7mm by 7 mm thick. Soak in water for a while and then drain.* Place the burdock into #1 sauce in a pan, place a smaller lid on the burdock, and cook for 15 minutes over medium heat to soften.** When it is softened, drain and cool in a colander.

300 g thinly sliced beef 100 g burdock root (the thinner the better) 1 carrot (~50 g) 50 g kidney beans Potato starch (katakuri ko) 1 tbsp salad oil

Cut the carrot into pieces about 5 mm by 5 mm thick. Remove stem end of the kidney beans. Place the carrot in a pan, add water to cover the carrot, and boil. Ten minutes later, add the kidney beans and cook for three more minutes. Drain and cool in a colander.

Using a tea strainer to sprinkle the potato starch is a cool idea!

Lay out slices of beef (one or two) to make a sheet about 30 cm long and 10 cm wide. Lightly sprinkle the surface of the beef with the potato starch.*** Place about five pieces of the burdock at the end of the beef at an angle and roll into a cylinder. Place the rolls with the exposed edge down so they do not unroll. In a similar way, make beef rolls with the carrot pieces and the kidney beans. Place the rolls in the pan edge down so they do not unroll.

Heat the salad oil in a frying pan, and place the rolls in the pan edge down. Carefully and slowly turn the roll while browning until the entire surface is brown. Remove the remaining oil from the pan using a paper towel. Add sauce #2, reduce the sauce over medium heat. When the surface of the rolls is glazed, remove from heat, and cool. Cut the roll into bite-size pieces and place on a plate.

Tips: *After cutting, soak the burdock root in water to remove any bitterness. But soaking too long lessens the flavor, so soaking for about five minutes is best. If you like the bitter flavor, delete this process.

**Placing a lid smaller than the pan circumference on ingredients is called “otoshibuta,” a technique used to season the ingredients evenly with stock. If you don’t have a special lid, aluminum foil can be used. ***Use a tea strainer to sprinkle the potato starch on the beef slices to get a light, even covering.

Art on the Palm of Your Hand 根付（Netsuke: 腰際間墜飾）手掌上的藝術

netsuke was a part of the traditional Japanese kimono and was a small toggle used to secure sagemono, the collective term for inro (medicine cases), tobacco pouches, purses or other items that were suspended on a silk cord from men’s obi, or kimono sash. With widespread diffusion of tobacco, which was imported to Japan in the 16th century, using netsuke became widely popular among people, from common people to aristocrats to the Shogun himself. People wore a variety of netsuke, including basic, humorous, and gorgeous ones, like an accessory, depending on situations. They competed in their stylish fashions and enthusiasm for netsuke gradually intensified. From the middle of the 19th century, netsuke came to be known in Europe as Japanese culture started attracting people’s attention there, and became popular among collectors. Nowadays there are many collectors in Western countries. Netsuke were created from ivory, wood, stag antlers, ceramics, precious metal, iron, lacquer and other materials, and the size is about 3 cm

to more than 10 cm for a large one. The shape is usually rather simple and round, and netsuke are often decorated with strikingly elaborate carvings. The depictions embody a wide range of subject matter; Buddhist and Shinto deities and legendary characters, as well as figures and objects from everyday life. Detailed and realistic carvings of animals, mythical creatures, fruits, plants, and scenery are also very attractive. There are many miniature sculptures in the world, but netsuke are unrivaled for their unique design, form, and beauty created under limitations of an item of practical use. See and touch and admire on the palm of your hand, and you will fascinated by the charms of netsuke.

World Cosplay Summit 2011

n August 2011, the summer heat of Nagoya greeted cosplayers from all over the world. Hundreds of thousands of people from 17 nations from all around the world participated in events at the World Cosplay Summit including parades and the World Cosplay Championship. Cosplay, the abbreviation of “costume play,” in which “cosplayers” dress up in costumes of anime or game characters, has many young fans not only in Japan but also in many countries around the world. The annual World Cosplay Summit in Nagoya was first held in 2003. This year marked its 9th year. Cosplayers from countries from all over the world first attended a parade in Sakae, Nagoya’s entertainment district, on Saturday, August 6. They walked along a red carpet, proudly showing their costumes to the audience. Mr. Takashi Kawamura, mayor of Nagoya City, and Mr. Hideaki Omura, governor of Aichi Prefecture, both in cosplay costumes, welcomed all the international cosplayers. In the afternoon, more than 500 cosplayers paraded through the Osu Shopping Mall, receiving rousing cheers from the audience. On the following day, Sunday, August 7, the 2011 Grand Champion was decided. The venue, Oasis 21, where the festival reached its climax was inundated with anime and game fans. Although given only 2½ minutes each for a stage performance, the representative teams gave unique performances. The JAM project, comprised of popular Japanese voice actors, livened up the event with anime songs. As 17,000 visitors watched, the Olivas, a brother and sister pair from Brazil in FINAL FANTASY XII costumes won the championship. Cosplay has promoted international communication among anime and game fans all over the world. What will happen in Nagoya next year? Rail 鐵路 Japan is covered in a rail network that reaches to almost every corner of the archipelago. Taxis 計程車 Japanese taxis can be found at the exit to every train station in the country or alternatively hailed on the streets. The red sign visible through the windshield of the car: “空車” (kusha) means it is vacant and available for hire but when the sign reads “賃走” (chinso), it is unavailable. The back door on the left side will open and close automatically so be careful not to stand too close! (All the other doors are operated manually) Rates vary depending on the taxi company but usually start at a fixed rate of 710 yen (in Tokyo) for the first two kilometers. The rate system is shown inside the taxi and receipts can be issued. In urban areas, you can usually pay by credit card for a taxi. If credit cards are accepted, a taxi has a sticker showing this on the window.

Long-distance buses in Japan are run by numerous companies including JR. Buses are generally more economic than traveling by plane or train but do take longer and can be affected by traffic jams at busy times of the day or night. Local buses run all over Japan as well as in the major cities and sometimes English instructions or stop announcements are used but this is not the case everywhere. We would recommend you ask drivers to remind you of where you must disembark prior to setting off.
