Fuji-Torii, established 60 years ago, produces folding screens, each of which is elaborately hand painted exclusively for Fuji-Torii by a professional artist using traditional brush-painting techniques. Fujinomiya City Sengen Taisha Shrine is the head of all shrines for worshipping Mount Fuji. Located west of the shrine is Fuji Takasago Sake Brewery, which was founded around 1830. Its sake made with underground water from Mount Fuji is characterized by its mild taste. The brewery offers a free brewery tour for the purpose of promoting better understanding of Japanese sake. You can learn how rice is turned into sake from master sake brewers. You will also enjoy the specific aroma and atmosphere of Japanese breweries. Fujinomiya is famous for yakisoba. The dish is made with chewy noodles and pieces of crispy meat (degreased meat chips) which give it a rich flavor. Some restaurants are selfservice, so you can even try cooking noodles yourself.

This long-established town of paper manufacturing offers great Shirasu-don views of Mount Fuji, as the name suggests. Bicycles are convenient to go around the city. The Tourist Information Center at the Shin-Fuji Station on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line has free rental bikes (5 bikes. Reservations accepted), and offers English cycling maps. A 20-minute bike ride will take you to Tagonoura Port, which is famous for fresh and tasty shirasu (young white fish). You can try fresh raw shirasu on rice (shirasu-don). Boiled shirasu (kama-age) is good for those who are unaccustomed to eating raw fish. You can enjoy a great view of Mount Fuji from Chuo Park, which is located about 15 minutes away from Shin-Fuji Station by bike. If you have energy and enough time, please visit Hiromi Park with superb views and beautiful flowers, and Iwamotoyama Park, which can be reached from Jisso Temple by hiking.

Numazu City Take a bus from the South Exit of Numazu Station for about 10 minutes, and you will be at Numazu Port. The port area is filled with restaurants and fish markets. You can enjoy fresh seafood dishes and buy local seafood at Numazu Minato Shinsen-kan shopping mall. You will enjoy looking at the lively sellers and fresh seafood on display. Go to the second floor of the adjacent Numazu fish market INO, and you can watch auctions from 5:45 a.m. to about 7 a.m., except for Saturdays. The raucous calls of auctioneers are overwhelming. Awa-shima Island, located to the south of Numazu has Awashima Marine Park. The aquarium offers various events, including performances by dolphins, sea lions,

and seals. You can touch sea urchins, starfish, sea cucumbers, and other creatures on the second floor. The popular frog museum, which breeds and exhibits frogs from all over the world, has the most kinds and number of frogs in Japan.

Mishima Taisha Shrine

Mishima City This area, which used to have a magistrate’s office, has prospered as the center of the surrounding region as well as a post station in older times. Mishima-Taisha Shrine, which is located about 15 minutes away from Mishima Station on foot, is famous as the shrine where Minamoto no Yoritomo, a military commander in the 12th century, prayed for the revival of the Minamoto Family. The magnificent shrine pavilion stands in deep woods. The treasure museum exhibits its collection of precious treasures, including national treasures, such as makie-tebako cosmetic boxes and swords.

Susono City Snow Town Yeti starts operating from midOctober, which is the earliest among outdoor ski areas in Japan. There is a space for playing in snow for children and slopes exclusively for sledding, as well as courses for intermediate to advanced skiers with a peak incline of 25 degrees. Snowboarders are also welcome. There are rental shops, so you can come enjoy skiing without bringing your own gear. Located in the south of Yeti is Grinpa amusement park. There are many amusement facilities for children. The whole family can enjoy the Ferris wheel at an altitude of 1,280 meters, which is the highest in Japan. A slope for sledding and a skating rink are open from mid-December to the end of March. You can conveniently access both facilities from Gotemba Station and Mishima Station by city bus. You can purchase a special ticket for bus fare plus facility entrance fee at Fujikyu Bus counter at both stations.

Gotemba City This city has long prospered as a starting point of Mount Fuji climbing. Gotemba Premium Outlets® with about 210 stores selling a wide variety of items, from premium brands to household goods, is the biggest outlet mall in Japan. There are many restaurants and cafés, so you can enjoy shopping the whole day. There is a free shuttle bus service from Gotemba Station.

富士宮市淺間大社是富士山信仰的總本宮，位於其西邊的高砂酒造廠是1830年建造的酒庫。其特色是使用富士山的伏流水，製成口感很好的美酒。為了讓大家能更了解日本酒，有舉辦免費參觀酒庫的活動。可以在釀造師傅面前，學習白米是如何製成日本酒。日本的倉庫獨有的香味與氣氛也是讓人耳目一新。富士宮的特產是炒麵。有咬勁的麵條配上口味濃厚的肉燥。有的店還可以讓客人自己動手炒麵呢！富士市富士市自古就是製紙的城市，正如其名可以眺望富士山壯麗的風貌。遊覽市內最方便的是自行車。也是新幹線車站之一的新富士站，車站的觀光服務處可以免費租借腳踏車（限5台/可預約），還有提供英文自行車地圖。騎自行車到出產新鮮又美味吻仔魚而聞名的田子埔港，只要20分鐘。想要品嘗現捕的生吻仔魚就要吃吻仔魚蓋飯，不敢生吃的人可以改吃鍋燒。距離新富士山站15分鐘自行車車程的中央公園裡，可以眺望壯麗的富士山。有多餘體力與時間的人，不妨延伸到擁有美麗景色與花草的廣見公園，或是享受從實相寺健行至岩本山公園的健行樂趣。

Oyama Town Fuji Speedway in this town is a circuit which holds world-class car races. It held F1 Japan Grand Prix in 2007 and 2008. If you can schedule ahead, try Circuit Taxi, where you can experience the circuit without a driver’s license. This service offers you a ride in a pace car driven by a staff driver on the circuit. The very fast acceleration and close cornering by a skilled driver is not something you can experience in ordinary driving in daily life. Reservation by the day before is required. Check the calendar on their official website for the schedule.

沼津市從沼津站南口搭公車約10分鐘可達沼津港，港口聚集了美食街與魚市場。沼津港Minato新鮮館裡，可以購買或是品嘗新鮮的海鮮。光是望著活力十足的販售人員模樣與陳列的生鮮商品，就覺得樂趣無窮。隔壁沼津魚市場INO的2樓，除了週六以外，每天5點45分～7點可以參觀批貨競價，真被威嚴的吆喝聲給嚇到了。位於南部的淡島，有一座淡島海洋公園。水族館裡舉辦海豚秀與海獅海豹秀等等活動，館內2樓也可以摸海膽、海星與海蔘。也很熱門的青蛙館有飼養並展示來自世界各地的青蛙。這裡的青蛙種類與培育數量可說是日本第一呢！

三島市這裡自古設有代官所（官衙），是當地的中心地區，並且以宿驛城而繁榮。從三島站步行約15分鐘的三嶋大社，因12世紀武將源賴朝在此祈求源氏復興而聞名。在濃密的樹叢裡興建這座壯麗堂皇的殿閣。寶物館裡收藏並展示國寶描金畫匣子與刀劍等等貴重寶物。裾野市日本室外滑雪場中，最早從10月中旬開始營業的滑雪場是Snow Town Yeti。這裡有孩童喜歡玩雪遊戲專用廣場或雪橇專用滑雪場，還有最大25度斜坡中高級適用的滑雪道。滑雪板也可以滑行。因為有出租商店，所以就算沒有攜帶裝備也能玩得盡興。位於於Yeti南邊的遊樂園Grinpa，適合孩童的娛樂設備相當完善。也有海拔高達1,280m的日本第一高摩天輪，全家都能玩得開心。從12月中旬～3月底也有開放雪橇專用滑雪場與滑冰場。Yeti與Grinpa兩處都是搭乘從御殿場站與三島站駛出的路線公車最為方便。兩車站的富士急公車窗口皆有販售公車票與入場券的超值套票。御殿場市這裡以富士山登山據點而繁榮，Gotemba Premium Outlets®，從高級品牌乃至生活雜貨約有210家店舖林立，是日本最大型的購物商城。飲食設備也很豐富完善，所以整天都能盡情享受購物的樂趣。從御殿場站有行駛免費的接駁車。小山町位於小山町內的Fuji Speedway（富士國際賽車場），是舉辦世界最頂尖賽車的賽車場。2007年與2008年也曾舉辦過F1日本大獎賽。行程剛好可以配合的話，可以挑戰看看賽車場計程車，賽車場計程車沒有汽車駕照也能體驗賽車場的行車，此項服務是搭乘熟練人員駕駛的定速車。駕車人員精準地踩加速器，和幾乎出界的轉彎都是日常中無法體驗到的。需要在前一天以前預約，舉辦的日程可以參閱官網。

seafood from the Ise Bay, and high quality lumber from the upstream land of the Kiso River, the city has had the potential to develop since its beginnings. Honmaru Palace of Nagoya Castle, constructed by the deep-pocketed Tokugawa family, is said to be the best modern castle palace in Japan. It is currently being restored. Many craftsmen gathered in the town to compete for the opportunity to show off their skills; for example, Japanese clockwork techniques were used in the production of karakuri dolls (wind-up dolls). The manufacturing techniques and their spirit of excellence have carried over into the modern industry. Nagoya-jo (Nagoya ladies) are the stereotypical young ladies of Nagoya seen shopping with their mothers wearing luxury brand outfits. Their fashion sense is known to be gorgeous but conservative. Nagoya is also famous for its underground malls. Sun Road, which opened in 1957, connects with Nagoya Station. It was the first full-fledged underground mall opened in Japan after WWII. There are also large underground malls in the Sakae and Kamimaezu station areas.

New Showplaces in Nagoya From 2010 to 2011, two new spots were built in Nagoya. Nagoya City Science Museum Planetarium, with its inner diameter of 35 meters, is the

largest in the world. The live show by the curators is quite popular and always has a line of people waiting to get in. Sights Around Nagoya Station One of the two biggest commercial areas in Nagoya is Nagoya Station, the gateway to Nagoya. Noritake Garden, a recreational area in the old Noritake factory, can be reached by subway

from Nagoya Station, but it may be more convenient for tourists to take the Meguru bus, a Nagoya sightseeing route bus. The Meguru bus goes around the main tourist spots in Nagoya City, and a “1-day ticket” allows unlimited rides on the bus for one day. At the Craft Center in Noritake Garden, visitors can observe the manufacturing process of bone china by westernstyle ceramic maker Noritake. Early products, so-called “Old Noritake,” and 200 dinner plates produced since its establishment in 1904 to the present are exhibited at the museum. There are also shops and restaurants. The Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology is adjacent and offers exhibitions and demonstrations of changes in Toyota’s textile machinery and automobile technologies.

Nagoya Castle/Tokugawa Nagoya Castle, built by Tokugawa Ieyasu as the residence of the Owari Tokugawa family is part of the legacy of the superpower of the Tokugawa shogunate. Doll Festival of the Owari Tokugawa Family is a special exhibition held annually in March. Tokugawaen is a beautiful daimyo garden of the Edo period. Visitors can enjoy eating or sipping tea in the beautiful garden.

Fushimi/Sake/Osu Fushimi, one station from Nagoya Subway Station, is home to the Nagoya City Science Museum. The station after Fushimi is Sakae, another thriving area of Nagoya City. Shopping and gourmet food in abundant in the department stores and underground malls. Oasis 21 is a multi-story complex with a huge futuristic glass roof “floating” above. Nagoya TV Tower, Japan’s first radio tower built in 1954, is 180 meters high and has a great view of the entire town. The Osu area prospered as a temple town for Osu Kannon (a Buddhist temple of the Shingon sect) and still has an old town atmosphere. The unique atmosphere of the town, created by its mixture of old temples and traditional buildings with new, wide range of shops including stores selling the latest electronics, variety goods, and recycled clothing attracts foreigners as well as locals young and old.

Atsuta/Nagoya Port On the Meijo Subway Line from Sakae Station, get off at Jingunishi Station to visit Atsuta Jingu Shrine. The shrine has a long and distinguished history and on the grounds are a 1,000-year

old camphor tree forest and a “national treasure” treasure house. This is the second biggest shrine (after Ise Jingu Shrine) and enshrines the Kusanagi-no-mitsurugi (Kusanagi’s sacred sword), one of three Imperial Regalia of Japan. There are traditional Japanese-style confectionaries and restaurants in this area, as well as the birthplace of Minamoto no Yoritomo, who started the Kamakura shogunate in the 12th century. On the Meiko Line of the Meijo Subway Line get off at Nagoyako Station to visit the Nagoya Public Aquarium for a demonstration of killer whale training and performances by dolphins as well as seeing creatures in various aquatic environments. The SCMAGLEV and Railway Park at Kinjofuto Station can be reached from JR Nagoya Station on the Aonami Line.

Inuyama A 25-minute ride from Nagoya Station on a limited express train on the Meitetsu Inuyama Line brings you to Inuyama Station. Inuyama Castle, built in 1537, is on the hill overlooking the Kiso River. Inuyama is one of the four national treasure castles along with Matsumoto (Nagano Prefecture), Hikone (Shiga Prefecture), and Himeji (Hyogo Prefecture) Castles. The tower of Inuyama Castle is the oldest in Japan. Walking around the old castle town is like going back in time. In summer, ukai (traditional cormorant fishing) can be seen in the Kiso

River. The Museum Meiji-mura is an outdoor museum of buildings mainly built during the Meiji period (1868-1912) that have been moved to this site for preservation. The buildings include the house where, at different times, lived authors Mori Ogai and Natsume Soseki, the main entrance hall and lobby of Imperial Hotel designed by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and more of historical interest.

Chita Peninsula The Chita Peninsula is a place blessed with a beautiful sea and an abundance of seafood. Central Japan International Airport, Centrair, is located on an artificial island in Ise Bay. It takes only 28 minutes from Meitetsu Nagoya Station on the airport limited express μSKY. The terminal building has 100 famous shops as well as the European-style “Renga-dori” (Brick Street) and the shopping mall “Chochinyokocho” (Lantern Alley) with the feel of old Japan. Uniqlo, MUJI to GO and other fine shops, popular Nagoya restaurants, such as Misokatsu Yabaton and Sekai no Yamachan, are also there. The Handa Dashi Matsuri is held every five years on the first Saturday and Sunday in October and 31 gorgeous floats are on display in the city.

Take-shima Island, a small island with a circumference of only 620 meters, has a confirmed 238 species of indigenous higher plants in some 65 families and is home to Takeshima Aquarium. The island itself has been designated a national natural treasure. Gamagori Orange Park is a citrus fruit park surrounded by mountains. At Boat Race Gamagori, races are held in the evening throughout the year. The largest fireworks (up to a diameter of 650 meters!) on the Pacific Ocean in Japan are launched here in summer at the fireworks festival. Gamagori is the only place where three such big fireworks are launched in one night.

It has mausoleums for eight generations of Iyeyasu ancestors and enshrines life-size tablets of the shoguns from Ieyasu to the 14th and last Tokugawa shogun. Okazaki Castle can be seen from San-mon gate of the temple. Haccho Village is about 870 meters (haccho in Japanese) away from Okazaki Castle. Miso made in the village is called haccho miso. Two of the original makers are still there and produce the miso in a traditional way. The narrow streets lined with miso storehouses create an old-time atmosphere. At Haccho Miso no Sato, a facility of miso producer Kakukyu, the process of making miso can be observed (in Japanese only). Dishes using haccho miso, such as miso dengaku, miso katsu, and miso nikomi udon, are a must-eat in Okazaki.

Another local dish is kishimen, broad udon noodles served in a soybased soup topped with deep-fried tofu, green vegetables, dried bonito shavings, and other taste treats. Other unique dishes such as misonikomi udon, super spicy Taiwan ramen (Chinese-style wheat noodles), curry udon, and ankake spaghetti (spaghetti topped with a spicy vegetable-laden sauce) are also very tasty! Chicken tebasaki karaage (deep-fried chicken wings) is spicy and tangy and goes really well with beer. Nagoya kochin is one of the three most tasty and well-known Japanese breeds of chicken and there are various delicious dishes using Nagoya kochin. Hitsumabushi is a rice dish topped with finely-chopped unagi kabayaki (grilled eel in a sweet soy-based sauce). There is a specific order of eating this dish for maximum enjoyment: first, eat a few bites just as served; second, add finelychopped green onion, seaweed, wasabi, or other topping and mix them in with the rice and have a few more bites; and lastly, pour tea or broth and eat in ochazuke-style (cooked rice with tea, broth, or hot water poured over, like milk over cereal). Akamiso (red soybean paste) is another

delicious Nagoya specialty, miso made with soy beans fermented and matured for a longer period of time than for miso made from rice or barley. This extra-long fermentation period for this miso is made possible by the abundance of agricultural products and seafood since ancient times so people need not be in a hurry for this miso. Miso katsu (pork cutlet served with an akamiso-based sauce) is really very tasty. Many cafés in Nagoya offer a “morning set” with free toast or other item if you order a coffee or tea drink. The Chita Peninsula is well-known for its fresh local seafood, such as octopus and fugu and the Atsumi Peninsula for fresh fruit, such as strawberries and melons sweetened by the mild, sunny weather. Uiro, a steamed cake made of rice flour and sugar with a unique mochi-like (chewy and sticky) texture is a standard souvenir from Aichi. Ebi senbei, rice crackers made with fresh shrimp caught on the day is also popular.

Events The World Cosplay Summit is an annual summer festival held in Osu and the surrounded areas. The Nagoya Festival in October includes a parade of the three warriors from the area— Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Ski resorts are easily accessed on the same day you plan to ski. The ski areas in Hokkaido and Tohoku are accessible within 1 hour from urban districts. Ski resorts in Niigata Prefecture and in Yatsugatake (Nagano Prefecture) ski areas are within 2.5 hours from Tokyo, and ski areas in Gifu and Nagano prefectures are within 2 hours from Nagoya (Aichi Prefecture).

Tai no Kobu (Konbu)-jime Konbu-cured Sea Bream Ingredients (serves 4) 2 fillets of sea bream for sashimi (400 g) Sauce (nihaizu) 2 pieces of konbu kelp (15-cm long) Equal amounts of soy sauce and vinegar Salt *Citrus juice can be substituted for the vinegar in the sauce. Wasabi This time, we used daidai (a bitter orange).

Cooking directions:

For even coverage, sprinkle the salt from about 30 cm above the fillets.

Place the fillets skin-side down on a tray that has been sprinkled with salt and then salt the fillets. Generously sprinkle salt on the thicker part of each fillet.

Place the fillets on a wire rack and refrigerate for about 15 minutes.

Lightly rinse the kelp in water and pat dry. Wipe any excess moisture off the fillets, cover each fillet with a piece of kelp, seal with plastic wrap and refrigerate for about 3 hours. If a wire rack is not available, use cooking paper.

Remove the kelp and slice the fillets into 5-6 mm-thick pieces.

It can be used with Western dishes, much like carpaccio.

Serve with wasabi, sauce, and your choice of garnishes.

Tips: When slicing the fillet to make the sashimi, use the sogi-giri technique; that is, thinly slice each fillet at an angle.

Konbu-curing is the Japanese cooking style of wrapping sashimi with kelp to absorb the moisture, which firms up the fish and also helps it to keep longer. It also adds the savory flavor of the kelp to the sashimi.

Chofu Station Take a limited express train on the Keio Line from Shinjuku Station and be at Chofu Station in about 15 minutes. Statues of the famous yokai (specter) character, Kitaro, and his fellow characters created by cartoonist Shigeru Mizuki stand along Tenjin Street starting from Old Koshu Kaido Street at the north side of Chofu Station to Fudaten Shrine. Go further north for another 30 minutes and you will be at Jindai-ji Temple. Jindai-ji Temple is one of the oldest temples in Tokyo. This peaceful area is blessed with an abundance of lush vegetation and natural spring water. Pass through the temple gate, pray at the main hall, and stroll around the area. Outside the gate, there are many soba restaurants serving the area’s specialty, Jindai-ji soba. A daruma (an egg-shaped doll usually made of papier mache and painted red) fair is held in March every year. Drop by and enjoy the Suisei Shokubutsuen (aquatic garden) and Jindai-ji Onsen (hot spring) in this area. Jindai Botanical Gardens Park is located next to the temple. Approximately 100,000 plants of 4,800 species are growing on the grounds of the park. This park is also known for beautiful Japanese apricot and cherry tree blossoms. Spring and autumn rose festivals are held in the rose garden and festival visitors can enjoy a concert and the illuminated trees. The Chofu Aerospace Center operated by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has an exhibition for visitors to learn about general aerospace-research activities.

Kondo Isami (1834-1868), a commander of the Shinsengumi special police force of the late Edo period, was born in Chofu. The place where he was born and grave are still there. Chofu Airport is an active hub for airlines connecting the main land with the Izu Islands. Enjoy a cup of tea while watching airplanes taking off and landing. Tokyo Furii Kippu (東京フリーきっぷ) (www.jreast. co.jp/e/pass/) is available for use on JR lines (inside Tokyo’s 23 wards), subways, and the Toei Bus service for one whole day – ending at midnight – at a charge of 1,580 yen. JR Kanto Area Pass (www.jreast.co.jp/e/kantoareapass/) is a discounted pass for unlimited rides in Tokyo and the surrounding Kanto area. Valid for three days, the pass is good for unlimited rides using reserved seats on ordinary cars on Shinkansen (bullet trains), limited express and other trains. Prices are 8,000 yen (Adults), and 4,000 yen (Children).

Japanese taxis can be found at the exit to every train station in the country or alternatively hailed on the streets. The red sign visible through the windshield of the car: “空車” (kusha) means it is vacant and available for hire but when the sign reads “賃走” (chinso), it is unavailable. (All the other doors are operated manually) Rates vary depending on the taxi company but usually start at a fixed rate of 710 yen (in Tokyo) for the first two kilometers. Bus 巴士 Long-distance buses in Japan are run by numerous companies including JR. Buses are generally more economic than traveling by plane or train but do take longer and can be affected by traffic jams at busy times of the day or night.
