Beppu 別府 Beppu is the No. 1 hot spring town in Japan in number of springs and in quantity of hot spring water. It has eight hot spring areas collectively called “Beppu Hatto.” Each of them creates a unique atmosphere and you will see white steams rising here and there in the city. Of the 11 kinds of water that are found on the earth, Beppu has ten kinds represented in its hot springs. The eight jigoku (hells) are enjoyable for their rising vapors, gushing hot airs and streams. Seafood from Beppu Bay is delicious. In the Myoban area, pudding is steamed with vapors from the ground. If you are interested in a more local point of view, join local walking tours guided by volunteer guides. More details, visit www.beppu-navi.jp/walk/.

Yufuin Onsen is nestled in a quiet countryside at the foot of Mt. Yufu-dake. It has more than 800 springs and boasts the second largest amount of spring water in Japan after Beppu. While it is blessed with beautiful natural scenery, the area is dotted with fashionable shops and cafes. Three long-established ryhokan including Yufuin Tama no Yu, Kamenoi Besso, and Sanso Murata are popular for being luxurious and sophisticated, each of which has a unique feel. Even though you don’t stay, visiting their shops and cafes, such as Tearoom Nichol, Tenjo Sajiki, artegio, and the theo, is recommended. Oita with Onsen and Buddhism Culture
Surrounded by many trees, Usa Jingu Shrine has a clear and peaceful atmosphere.
Usa 宇佐 Usa Jingu Shrine is said to have been founded in 725. It is the main shrine for more than 40,000 shrines worshipping the ancient Hachiman God (God of archery and martial arts) in Japan. Surrounded by pristine forests, it has a lot of important cultural properties including national treasures in its huge precincts. It is also known as a birthplace for the unification of Shinto with Buddhism in which people worship Buddhism as well as the Japanese native gods. Visiting Oita Prefectural Rekishi Hakubutsukan (history museum), gohyaku-rakan (500

Souvenir shops and tea houses line the approach to the shrine. Negi-yaki, a pancake using green onion, which is a local specialty, is worth eating.
About 1,200 years ago, as the number of ascetic monks increased and Miroku-ji Temple, an inner temple of Usa Jingu Shrine, became too small for training, a new training place was opened in the Kunisaki Peninsula. The peninsula has rough, rocky mountains in the central area around Mt. Futago. This area enjoyed a variety of cultures including Buddhism from China because the area had a strong relation to Usa Jingu and was also a stop on the way for envoys who went to China (those days Tang Dynasty China) from Hakata (Fukuoka Pref.) by boat in those days. Such cultures mixed with each other and developed. Under the umbrella of Usa Jingu, 28 temples compete with their Buddhist art, especially stone art. In contrast, the western part of the peninsula has idyllic landscapes with gentle hills and is home to Fuki-ji Temple. Its main hall was built about 800 years ago and the oldest wooden building in Kyushu. It is one of the three main Amida halls in Japan 6

Editor’s Memo 編者語 Oita is renowned for the superb hot springs introduced in this issue. In addition, we are focusing on the rural northeastern part of the prefecture. I visited the area for the first time in my research for this article and was fascinated by the unique atmosphere, culture and history. I am an enthusiastic mountain climber but, regrettably, I didn't have time during my visit to climb the lovely Mt. Yufu-dake. Next time, I will surely make time for it! Visited Mt. Fuji via the JR Chuo Line Route I got on the “Kaiji” Limited Express on the Chuo Line from Platform #10 in JR Shinjuku Station. The train ride was pretty comfortable with a reclining and sliding seat. The large windows were perfect for enjoying the scenery. After leaving Shinjuku Station, passing by the entertainment district and residential areas, and crossing a few rivers, the train arrived at Hachiōji Station. Soon after the departure from Hachiōji Station, the train entered into a mountainous area. An idyllic country view with a background of mountains sometimes appeared in the scenery from the train windows, making me realize I am going away from the city area. About one hour after leaving Shinjuku Station, the train arrived at Ōtsuki Station, where I transferred to the Fujikyuko Line. When I arrived at the Fujikyuko Line platform, the Fuji-san Tokkyu (limited express train), whose exterior is decorated with unique paintings of Mt. Fuji, was waiting for me. I sat down on one of the non-reserved seats, and left for the final destination, Kawaguchiko Station. The train was heading southwest along the river. As the train proceeded, Mt. Fuji became closer and closer, and a cheer arose from some passengers. About 50 minutes after leaving Ōtsuki Station, I arrived at Kawaguchiko Station.

Admire Majestic Mount Fuji
Let’s Climb Mount Fuji
Mount Fuji has been revered by many people since ancient times and depicted in a number of ukiyo-e (Japanese wood block prints) works by world-famous artists including Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige. The best place to catch great views of majestic Mount Fuji is the Lake Kawaguchiko area. From Oishi Park located on the north shore of Lake Kawaguchiko, you can enjoy the view of Mount Fuji beyond lavender blooms from the end of June to the mid-July. At the end of October, the splendid view of the autumn leaves and Mount Fuji capped with snow can be seen from Nashikawa Momiji Kairo (“Corridor of autumn leaves”) on the north shore of Lake Kawaguchiko. You will always remember this beautiful scenery of Mount Fuji.
Climbing season of Mount Fuji is from July 1 to early September. About 320,000 people climbed Mount Fuji in 2012. There are four major routes and usually climbers start from the 5th Station (Gogome) on the side of Yamanashi Prefecture. The paths are well maintained and accessible even to beginners. However, the average temperature near the summit is about 5 degrees Celsius in midsummer and there are no trees around the trails providing protection from wind and rain. You will need to do some research, and get equipped and prepared for mountaineering.

Jill’s Eye on Japan vol.1
Japanese Magic
Tezuma
Jill from the UK will report on various experiences in Japan.
These days, when I hear the word “magic” I immediately think of deathdefying stunts, mentalists and hypnotists, or large-scale technical illusions. As a child this wasn’t so, as I had grown up watching more simple, humble performances where you can approach the magician and scrutinise their work, and yet still be amazed. Indeed, in Britain’s town squares and promenades you can still find people performing close-up magic as a means of busking, but it is not something you would make a conscious effort to go and see. In recent years the paying western audience seems to have acquired a taste for more shocking and extravagant magic (or magic you can be amazed by even through the television). For that reason, when I was invited to watch a traditional Japanese magic show, “Tezuma,” in an intimate performance space with only few spectators and even fewer performers, I was not only interested to go and learn something new about Japanese culture, I was excited to relive the experience of magic I had enjoyed as a child. The performance space is a newly built Japanese-style room, upon which much care and attention has clearly been lavished. In particular the decoration, which is beautiful without being distracting, and the lighting, which highlights the stage area without casting the audience 12
att. JAPAN Summer/2014
into gloom, was impressive. At first glance the room seemed too small for the audience, but as long as you can bear to kneel on the floor (or arrange your legs in a similar fashion) for an hour, it is in fact the perfect size for the audience to feel like one large group of friends who have attended together, and for everyone to sit in close proximity to the stage. During the show, the performance of magic itself was broken up into segments, and between the segments were shamisen recitals, short talks about the history of magic in Japan, and a tutorial for the audience to learn simple magic tricks. Thanks to this structure the audience members were never left bored or unattended, for instance the shamisen player would perform while the magician prepared the equipment for his next trick, and personally I never looked at my watch once, a sure sign of a good show. The talks on Japanese magic were not only fascinating; they were also a chance for the audience to glimpse the true personality of the magician, and come to understand and respect his choice to perform this centuries-old art. As a result the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and everyone could leave feeling like a “participant” rather than a mere “spectator.”
And as for the magic itself, it delivered exactly what one would want from an intimate performance such as this: simple yet unfathomable tricks, audience participation, cheesy jokes that were still funny, and a gradual increase in pace and difficulty that created a crescendo of gasps and applause from the audience and resulted in an extremely impressive and satisfying conclusion to the show. Also, thanks to the visual nature of the performance and the use of an interpreter and written materials, it was something anyone could enjoy and feel a part of, regardless of nationality or language ability. It is clear that much effort has been dedicated to the audience here, in particular the international audience. It can be seen from the contents of the show, down to details such as the creation of the performance space. It was a pleasure to attend.

The name Ginzan Onsen comes from Nobesawa Ginzan, a huge silver mine that prospered in the early 17th century. The town is lined with wooden ryokan built in the first half of the 20th century. Gas lamps are lit after dusk, creating a romantic mood. There are also public baths and foot baths to enjoy casually.

Basic Japanese Home Cooking
Let’s learn from a veteran Japanese housewife!
As this dish can be made with many kinds of ingredients and is very easy to cook, it is good after drinking and for a snack. Seasonal vegetables, shrimp and other ingredients make it delicious.
Yakiudon (Fried noodles) Ingredients (serves 4)
Cooking directions:
Season the meat with salt and pepper.
Cut up the carrot, cabbage, and onion.
To warm up the udon noodles, boil water in a pot, add the udon noodles to the pot, cover, and turn Tip for a delicious off the heat. treat.
Remove the strings from the peas.
Why should I stir-fry the harder vegetables first?
When the vegetables are thoroughly cooked, sprinkle them with sake.
If you cook them too long, they will lose their nice flavor.
Drain the noodles and transfer them to the frying pan.
Pour the soy sauce on in a circular pattern along the edge of the frying pan to enhance its aroma.
Smells great!
After all the liquid has been reduced, season with soy sauce.
Dish it up on a plate and sprinkle the shredded dried bonito on top.
Tips - Dried sakura shrimp and aonori dried green laver are other great toppings for this dish. - Japanese Worcester sauce can also be used instead of soy souce according to your preference

Instructor: Kazuko Karasawa I learned cooking from my parents, who ran a Japanese restaurant, and my grandmother, who lived to be 100 years old. As a housewife, I’ve been cooking for 20 years. I like cooking everyday, taking care of my family’s health.
It had been a while since I last did any real cooking, so I really enjoyed preparing some fresh vegetables and good meat to add to the delicious Yaki-udon dish. Thanks for teaching me Karasawa-San!

Tokyo Furii Kippu (東京フリーきっぷ) (www.jreast. co.jp/e/pass/) is available for use on JR lines (inside Tokyo’s 23 wards), subways, and the Toei Bus service for one whole day – ending at midnight – at a charge of 1,590 yen. JR Kanto Area Pass (www.jreast.co.jp/e/kantoareapass/) is a discounted pass for unlimited rides in Tokyo and the surrounding Kanto area. Valid for three days, the pass is good for unlimited rides using reserved seats on ordinary cars on Shinkansen (bullet trains), limited express and other trains. Prices are 8,300 yen (Adults), and 4,200 yen (Children).
Japanese taxis can be found at the exit to every train station in the country or alternatively hailed on the streets. The red sign visible through the windshield of the car: “空車” (kusha) means it is vacant and available for hire but when the sign reads “賃走” (chinso), it is unavailable. The back door on the left side will open and close automatically so be careful not to stand too close! (All the other doors are operated manually) Rates vary depending on the taxi company but usually start at a fixed rate of 730 yen (in Tokyo) for the first two kilometers. The rate system is shown inside the taxi and receipts can be issued. In urban areas, you can usually pay by credit card for a taxi. If credit cards are accepted, a taxi has a sticker showing this on the window.

Japan is covered in a rail network that reaches to almost every corner of the archipelago. Most are owned and run by the Japan Railway (JR) system and the world famous “Shinkansen” bullet train is of course one of the fastest and most enjoyable forms of land transport anywhere – the distance between Tokyo and Osaka being covered in just 2hrs 30 mins on the fastest line.

Long-distance buses in Japan are run by numerous companies including JR. Buses are generally more economic than traveling by plane or train but do take longer and can be affected by traffic jams at busy times of the day or night. Local buses run all over Japan as well as in the major cities and sometimes English instructions or stop announcements are used but this is not the case everywhere. We would recommend you ask drivers to remind you of where you must disembark prior to setting off.
