The Sacred Mount Oyama and the Abundant Nature

Tokyo

Isehara City

Located in the middle part of Kanagawa Prefecture, which shares its border with Tokyo on the east, Isehara City enjoys Mount Oyama surrounded by abundant nature. At one time, Isehara prospered as the land of Oyama-mode, the pilgrimage to Mount Oyama, the area still has classic shukubo (temple and shrine lodging) and quaint shops and stores, as well as many historical heritage sites. Only 2 hours away from Tokyo, you can enjoy hiking, visiting historic sites, and eating specialty tofu dishes in Isehara.

Oyama Afuri-jinja Shrine Shimosha

Sacred Mountain

M

ount Oyama has been worshipped as a holy mountain since ancient times. Oyama Afuri-jinja Shrine, which is said to have been established around 97 B.C., has a main building on the mountain top and a Shimo-sha building in the middle. The shrine enshrines Oyama Tsumi no Okami, who is the father of Konohanasakuya-hime no Mikoto, enshrined in Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine; therefore, there is a belief that if you climb one–either Mount Oyama or Mount Fuji–you should also climb the other mountain.

Mountain with a View

Y

ou can enjoy a spectacular view of Mount Fuji, Enoshima Island, and the Izu Seven Islands, as well as TOKYO SKYTREE® and Tokyo Tower. People used to affectionately call Mount Oyama “Amefuri Yama” (raining mountain). Clouds and fog are formed above the mountain top, bringing in rain; therefore, people worshiped the mountain while praying for rain.

Hiking

Hiking

T

here are well-maintained walking paths, which were created for people for offering a prayer, so you can enjoy a hike in great nature. The popular route is to go halfway up the mountain by cable car, and walk up to the top.

Oyama-dera Temple and Oyama Afuri-jinja Shrine Shimo-sha are also famous for beautiful autumn foliage. During the season, the trees are lit up in the evening, creating a mesmerizing view. Shukubo

Shukubo and Specialties

S

hukubo is an accommodation facility operated by a temple or a shrine for people visiting the mountain to offer prayers. As Oyama-mode (pilgrimage to Mount Oyama) became increasingly popular in the Edo period, shukubo also became popular and busier with people visiting the mountain. In Oyama, try local specialty tofu dishes. You can enjoy tofu in simple dishes featuring the delicate flavor of the materials as well as elaborate dishes. Other local specialties include kyarabuki, fuki giant butterbur cooked in soy sauce, and Oyamakoma (colorful wooden tops).

Oyama Osamedachi

Traditions and Entertainment

I

n summer, annual Oyama-osamedachi is held in Oyama. People bring wooden swords to Oyama-dera Temple and Oyama Afuri-jinja Shrine Shimo-sha building. In October, Oyama Himatsuri Takigi Noh is held, where you can enjoy top-class Noh and Kyogen (traditional comic drama). This holy entertainment has been carried on for 300 years in Oyama.

Oyama-koma top

A new summer event of Mount Oyama, Oyama Summer Jazz Latin Friendship Concert, has been successfully popular. It is held on the magnificent Noh stage in Oyama Afuri-jinja Shrine. E-Toro Matsuri (paper lantern festival) is held during the same time, and the approach to the shrine is beautifully lined with lit paper lanterns, creating a fantastic light corridor.

ocated at the eastern base of Mount Oyama, Hinata has precious cultural properties. Hinata Yakushi Temple is said to be opened by Buddhist priest Gyoki in 716. It enshrines statues of Yakushi Sanzon (Yakushi Nyorai and two Bosatsu), each of which was created from a single piece of wood in natabori carving style (characterized by chisel marks), presumably between the 10th century and the early 11th century. They are usually not open to the public, except for January 1 to 3, and 8 and April 15. The temple also has a collection of other National Important Cultural properties.

The main building (National Important Cultural Property) has been under major renovation (scheduled to be completed in 2016). The area around the temple is also known for various flowers, including cherry and plum blossoms in spring and spider lilies in autumn. You can enjoy a nice relaxing walk from Hinata Yakushi Temple via Mount Hinata to Nanasawa Onsen. The water temperature of Nanasawa Onsen is relatively low, which is believed to make your skin beautiful.

Autumn Leaves

Meijijingu Gaien

Hamarikyu Garden

The harbinger of autumn is the leaves of the trees in the mountains of Japan as they dramatically change from green to vibrant yellows, reds and purples. Spring in Japan is the season to enjoy the cherry blossoms and autumn is the time to view the amazingly colorful autumn foliage. It is said that leaves in Japan begin to change color when the low daily temperature dips below eight degrees Celsius and the trees begin to prepare for winter. Leaves first begin to change color in Hokkaido and in the higher mountains of Honshu in the middle of September. The “autumn color front” (kouyou-zensen) gradually moves lower down the mountains and southward. The spectacular tapestry created by the brightly colored leaves of the rowans, birches, beeches, maples and ginkgoes can be seen as late as November in various locations along the 3,000-km Japanese archipelago. Some areas have wide panoramic views of nature while others have views of beautiful temples and shrines nestled amongst the trees. There are many, many places to visit!

Sukayu is located on a cool highland at the western foot of the highest peak of Hakkoda mountains in Aomori Prefecture. It is said to have opened in 1684, and since then it has been known to locals as a therapeutic bath. The highlight is the “Sennin Buro,” which features a large building like a gym made completely of hiba cypress, containing two large baths and a waterfall bath. Although the bath is mixed, it is open only for women at certain times. (8-9 a.m. / 8-9 p.m.) There is also a gender-separated bath where you can stop by and enjoy. Abundant amounts of the hot water and various effects attract many visitors for hot spring cures. It is said that a woodblock print artist, Munakata Shiko, loved Sukayu Onsen and created his works when staying there. Sukayu is surrounded by a variety of alpine plants and is in the vicinity of Mount Hakkoda Botanical Laboratory, Tohoku University. The area is also a base of hiking routes. As one of the world’s greatest snowfall areas, heavy snow accumulation may remain until around early to mid-June.

Basic Japanese Home Cooking

Let’s learn from a veteran Japanese housewife!

天丼

This dish is a perfect combination of hearty ingredients and a special sauce. Try using various ingredients that you like!

Ten-don (Rice topped with tempura) Ingredients (serves 2)

1.5 cups wheat flour

1 cup cold water (1-2 cups ice cubes) Approx. 500 ml vegetable oil (depth of about 3 cm or half of the height of the pot) 2 servings hard-cooked rice Sauce

300 ml dashi broth 5 tablespoons sugar 6 tablespoons soy sauce 2 tablespoons mirin

Cooking directions: Mix the ingredients for the sauce.

Make 2 cuts in the shishito with knife.

On low heat, boil down to 1/3 the original volume.

Why? To prevent it from exploding.

Cut the eggplant, carrot and onion. Peel the shrimp keeping the last segment of the shell and the tail.

Make a few small cuts on the underside and slightly twist the body to straighten it.

Clean the tail with the back of a knife.

Add 0.8 cups of icy water to the sifted flour in a bowl and mix.

Make a small cut on the back and devein.

By hand, break off the pointy triangle tips of the tail tip. Heat the oil to 175 to 180 degrees Celsius.

Coat ingredients with batter.

How do I know? Put a pair of dry chopsticks into the bottom of the pan, if small bubbles appear, that’s ok.

Fry them. Caution! Some of ingredients exploded and sent searing hot oil everywhere.

Put them upside down for only one time.

Remove from the oil using chopsticks, shake gently, and drain the excess oil on the wire rack.

Tendon is my favorite Japanese dish. It’s delightful to learn how to make Tendon properly today. (George from the UK)

Tips - Don’t overly mix. The consistency should be like cake batter with some unmixed clumps of flour. If the batter is too dry, adjust by adding a bit more icy water but be careful to not add so much that the batter becomes runny. Keep the batter cold by placing the bowl in a bigger bowl of ice cubes. Instructor: Kazuko Karasawa I learned cooking from my parents, who ran a Japanese restaurant, and my grandmother, who lived to be 100 years old. As a housewife, I’ve been cooking for 20 years. I like cooking everyday, taking care of my family’s health.

Japanese taxis can be found at the exit to every train station in the country or alternatively hailed on the streets. The red sign visible through the windshield of the car: “空車” (kusha) means it is vacant and available for hire but when the sign reads “賃走” (chinso), it is unavailable. The back door on the left side will open and close automatically so be careful not to stand too close! (All the other doors are operated manually) Rates vary depending on the taxi company but usually start at a fixed rate of 730 yen (in Tokyo) for the first two kilometers. The rate system is shown inside the taxi and receipts can be issued. In urban areas, you can usually pay by credit card for a taxi. If credit cards are accepted, a taxi has a sticker showing this on the window.

Japan is covered in a rail network that reaches to almost every corner of the archipelago. Most are owned and run by the Japan Railway (JR) system and the world famous “Shinkansen” bullet train is of course one of the fastest and most enjoyable forms of land transport anywhere – the distance between Tokyo and Osaka being covered in just 2hrs 30 mins on the fastest line.

Long-distance buses in Japan are run by numerous companies including JR. Buses are generally more economic than traveling by plane or train but do take longer and can be affected by traffic jams at busy times of the day or night. Local buses run all over Japan as well as in the major cities and sometimes English instructions or stop announcements are used but this is not the case everywhere. We would recommend you ask drivers to remind you of where you must disembark prior to setting off.

Getting Around in Tokyo /

In big cities, such as Tokyo and Osaka, the under and over ground train system is well organized and highly efficient accessing any and all parts of the cities. To avoid wasting time lining up for tickets and working out how to use the machines in different stations, it is highly recommended to purchase pre-paid cards.

In the Kansai (Osaka) area ICOCA or PiTaPa is available IC cards similar to Suica / PASMO. Kansai Area Pass (www.jr-odekake.net/en/jwrp/) is valid for unlimited travel using ordinary non-reserved seats of JR-WEST local and rapid trains in the defined "Free Area." Prices are 2,060 yen (1-day), 4,110 yen (2-days), 5,140 yen (3-days), and 6,170 yen (4-days). Kansai Thru Pass (スルッと関西) (www.surutto.com) offers a similar service to the Tokyo Furii Kippu in Kansai and enables subway, railway (bar JR lines), and bus use throughout the Kansai area. Price - 4,000 yen for 2 days or 5,200 yen for 3 days.

You can cash traveler’s checks at many banks. Traveler’s checks can also be used at hotels, ryokan Japanese style hotels, and shops in big cities. Credit cards can be widely used in urban areas, but sometimes are not accepted at shops in rural areas.

Public telephones can be found almost everywhere in Japan and most can be used to make domestic and international calls. Only 10 or 100 yen coins can be used but all telephones take pre-paid telephone cards – purchase in convenience stores for 500 or 1,000 yen.If you use a calling card when you make an international call, it can reduce your calling rate.

Seiryu-den and National Treasure “Ao Fudo Myoo” in Kyoto

As the first large-scale retrospective exhibition held in Japan in 27 years, this exhibition features the whole gamut of Whistler's works, including 130 paintings and prints, as well as ukiyo-e prints that greatly influenced Whistler.

Shoren-in temple is one of the five Monzeki temples of the Tendai sect in Kyoto; the head priests at these temples originally belonged to the Imperial Family. This October, its new building Seiryu-den will be completed in its enclave on the top of Higashiyama, which is famous for Shogunzuka that commands a splendid view of the whole city. Seiryu-den has an observation stage 4.6 times larger than that of Kiyomizu-dera Temple and in this season is surrounded by beautiful autumn leaves. National Treasure “Ao Fudo Myoo” (secret Buddha image) is to be open to the public for the first time, from October 8 to December 23, 2014, after three years of repair in the Seiryu-den.
