Okinawa from Summer through Autumn

Japan’s southernmost prefecture, Okinawa (Okinawa-ken) attracts many visitors every year. Some of the most popular tourist destinations are the Churaumi Aquarium, Kokusai-dori (International Blvd) for shopping, and visiting one of the many beautiful Okinawa beaches. Here are a few suggested destinations to visit from summer through autumn for those who have previously visited Okinawa.

The beaches in Okinawa are open from the end of May through the middle of September. One important tip to enjoy Okinawa’s beaches is to protect your skin from the sun. The ultraviolet rays from the sun exposure are five times stronger than in mainland Japan.

Remote Islands of Okinawa

With its myriad of colors and white sand, the ocean and beaches surrounding Okinawa are some of the most popular in the world and draw visitors and divers from all parts of the globe. We would like to introduce to you beaches that are accessible from the main island of Okinawa and that are great for one-day trips.

Kouri Island is accessible from Okinawa Main Island via the Kouri Bridge. Experience amazing views of the turquoise colored ocean. Another popular tourist attraction is the Kouri Ocean Tower, which opened in 2013. Here you can enjoy the vast landscape of sugarcane fields.

The beaches and oceans around Okinawa feature some of the world’s most famous diving spots.

Aka Island

(one of the Kerama Islands) is located 50 minutes by high-speed ferry and 90 minutes by regular ferry from Okinawa Main Island. The island of 300 populations is not hustled by tour buses. You will find peaceful empty beaches. Many less featured tourist spots make up this heavenly paradise, with its white sand beaches and multi-hued ocean of emerald, turquoise, and sapphire.

Zamami Island (one of the Kerama Islands) offers great diving spots. Whale watching is also available from January through March.

Kerama Islands On March 5, 2014, the Kerama Islands were added to the national parks of Japan. This clear ocean is home to many beautiful corral reefs. It attracts divers from all over the planet.

Tokashiki Island (one of the Kerama Islands) offers 50-60 meters of crystal clear water. The magnificent beauty of this ocean is known around the world, attracting many divers and visitors. This island also allows visitors the opportunity to encounter wild sea turtles.

att. JAPAN

NEXT OKINAWA One of Okinawa’s distilleries is the Ie-jima distillery in Ie Island, located north from Okinawa Main Island. “Ie Rum Santamaria” is made from the inland’s grown sugarcane. The facility is open for visitors. Here you can taste freshly made rum and enjoy the deep aroma of 100% squeezed sugarcane. Access is by ferryboat from the Motobu Harbor in Okinawa Main Island. The ferry ride takes approximately 30 minutes. Rum in Okinawa

Awamori is a well-known local Okinawa hard liquor. With Okinawa’s excellent quality of sugarcane, Rum is also another locally produced liquor. The high quality sugarcane produces a superior quality of rum. There are three distilleries in Okinawa: Ie Rum in Ie Island, CORCOR in Minamidaito Island, and the Helios Rum in Nago City.

This is a highlight of the event and not to be missed.

The rum “CORCOR” was born in Minamidaito Island in 2005. It was created from the owner’s passion for making rum from Okinawa’s high quality sugarcane. Unlike conventional rum, CORCOR has no additives or artificial coloring.

Rum is an indispensable recipe for many sweets, such as cakes and breads. One traditional rum recipe is for rum cake. The sweet and rich aroma coming from the freshly baked rum cake is simply irresistible. Savor it right from the oven, or later, as rum cake moisture and flavor deepens with age. Enjoy a delicious moist rum cake.

In 1961 Helios Distillery, known as a maker of Helios Rum started their company by making rum from Okinawa’s sugarcane.

Cl ca an Tr Du pe Pre tra Sin tio

It has been two years since Mt. Fuji was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2013. Since then, Japan’s iconic mountain has gained more popularity than ever before. With scenery changing during each season, this majestic mountain has attracted people since ancient times. During the summer, the snow on the peak starts melting and the green vegetation begins to show. For most of the year, Mt. Fuji is blanketed with snow. To see the green summer vegetation is an opportunity not to be missed.

Recommended Summer Destinations Surrounding Mt. Fuji At the foot of Mt. Fuji, the Hanano Miyako Koen (Flower Garden) is located between Lake Yamanakako and Lake Kawaguchiko. Climbing Mt. Fuji Climbing Mt. Fuji is a great way to experience nature and learn about the history of the mountain. Or you can soak in the awe-inspiring views from a distance. The climbing season starts in the beginning of July and ends in the middle of September. There are four different trails leading to the summit. The Yoshida Trail is the most popular. With its many mountain huts and lodgings, even beginners can climb Mt. Fuji. During sunset you can see gigantic mountain shape shadows being cast by Mt. Fuji. The sunrise from the peak is truly breathtaking. Preparation is the key to having a wonderful and safe climb up Mt. Fuji. Please research the mountain, the trail you will be taking, and the proper gear that you will need. The temperature at the peak during mid-summer averages around 5℃. Since there are very few trees on the mountain trails leading to the peak, wind and rain can affect the conditions of the climbing. For more information about climbing Mt. Fuji, please visit the official web site. (http://www.fujisan-climb.jp/en/index.html).

This sauce also goes well with mayonnaise. Enjoy making your original combination for this sauce. - Adding some water and simmering makes the patty soft and juicy.

1. Mix all ingredients for the patty in a bowl until it becomes sticky. 2. Form a patty into a ball using your hands and then flatten slightly to form an elliptical ball. Make a slight indentation in the middle of the patty so the heat will enter more quickly. 3. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a fry pan, add the patty and cook over medium heat. Turn the patty over when it has become light brown. 4. When fried on both sides, add some water, cover with a lid, lower the heat and simmer for 4 minutes.

Rail

Japan is covered in a rail network that reaches to almost every corner of the archipelago. Most are owned and run by the Japan Railway (JR) system and the world famous “Shinkansen” bullet train is of course one of the fastest and most enjoyable forms of land transport anywhere – the distance between Tokyo and Osaka being covered in just 2hrs 30 mins on the fastest line.

Tokyo Furii Kippu(東京フリーきっぷ)(www.jreast.co.jp/e/ pass/) is available for use on JR lines (inside Tokyo’s 23 wards), subways, and the Toei Bus service for one whole day – ending at midnight – at a charge of 1,590 yen. JR Kanto Area Pass (www.jreast.co.jp/e/kantoareapass/) is a discounted pass for unlimited rides in Tokyo and the surrounding Kanto area. Valid for three days, the pass is good for unlimited rides using reserved seats on ordinary cars on Shinkansen (bullet trains), limited express and other trains. Prices are 8,300 yen (Adults), and 4,200 yen (Children).

Japanese taxis can be found at the exit to every train station in the country or alternatively hailed on the streets. The red sign visible through the windshield of the car: “空車” (kusha) means it is vacant and available for hire but when the sign reads “賃 走” (chinso), it is unavailable. The back door on the left side will open and close automatically so be careful not to stand too close! (All the other doors are operated manually) Rates vary depending on the taxi company but usually start at a fixed rate of 730 yen (in Tokyo) for the first two kilometers. The rate system is shown inside the taxi and receipts can be issued. In urban areas, you can usually pay by credit card for a taxi. If credit cards are accepted, a taxi has a sticker showing this on the window.

Bus 巴士

Long-distance buses in Japan are run by numerous companies including JR. Buses are generally more economic than traveling by plane or train but do take longer and can be affected by traffic jams at busy times of the day or night. Local buses run all over Japan as well as in the major cities and sometimes English instructions or stop announcements are used but this is not the case everywhere. We would recommend you ask drivers to remind you of where you must disembark prior to setting off.

You can cash traveler’s checks at many banks. Traveler’s checks can also be used at hotels, ryokan Japanese style hotels, and shops in big cities. Credit cards can be widely used in urban areas, but sometimes are not accepted at shops in rural areas.

Public telephones can be found almost everywhere in Japan and most can be used to make domestic and international calls. Only 10 or 100 yen coins can be used but all telephones take pre-paid telephone cards – purchase in convenience stores for 500 or 1,000 yen.If you use a calling card when you make an international call, it can reduce your calling rate.

KYOTO

Kyoto in Summer Kamogawa Noryo-Yuka and Kibune Kawa-Doko It is said people can sometimes feel the approach of summer as early as May, and Noryo-Yuka is a summertime feature of Kyoto that duly starts each May when some 80 restaurants and hotels operate a terrace above the west bank of the Kamogawa River from Nijo to Gojo. When the cool Kyoto breezes blow along the river, and as the temperatures climb, it is a popular family destination at night. In the northern part, restaurants and ryokan line the Kawa-Doko terrace about 1 km along the Kibune River. Nestled in mountains, this area has a lower temperature than that of the center of the city, and many people visit to feel the cool air in summer.

Shinjuku Robot Restaurant : Take a walk (OK, a seat) on the crazy side Leaving the Robot Restaurant at Shinjuku’s Kabukicho, one thought was buzzing through my head that a visit should be mandatory to all tourists, especially the short term travelers. Besides being crazy fun, the Robot Restaurant offers perceptive visitors many insights in several deep aspects of the way the Japanese see themselves and the world. Those insights, from references to the indigenous Shinto religion and the medieval and early modern periods, to the way technology is perceived and the cornucopia of influences which makes today’s Japan. From the lounge band in the waiting area to the show dungeon through the unbelievably colorful stairwell, you see Japan at one of its most flamboyant place, where the only thing similarly flamboyant would be the matsuri, folk festivals. But one can argue that those festivals are too Japanese-centric to make sense to tourist. Taken into account its international popularity and its hospitality to non-Japanese, it is one of the most “tourist friendly” places in the city. The show itself is hard to describe. A unique 90-minutes experience featuring not only robots but also mythological creatures, pretty girls, laser shows, music, dance and some audience participation. It is jam-packed with action and all kinds of audio/visual stimuli that, when it is over, you wonder how the time flew so fast – which is all that matters. As for the rest, the food is standard sushi-bento boxes, drinks are beers and soft drinks at the show area (in the lounge there are other stuff too). The program changes frequently, so you have a reason to come again. Do all these worth for \8000/$70? You will do your own judgment but for me, definitely! G.M. (Greece)
