Snow and Ice

Enjoy the winter in Hokkaido, a land where snow and ice are creating beautiful scenery and offering exciting snow activities.

Silky and soft, Hokkaido’s top quality powder snow is waiting for you!

Niseko Mt. Resort Grand Hirafu

Niseko is a town located in the south-west part of Hokkaido, at the foot of Mt. Niseko-Annupuri and it consists of four ski resorts. The largest among them is NISEKO Mt. RESORT Grand HIRAFU offering 30 different ski courses while another option is the Niseko Village ski resort where you can enjoy nature by sliding through a primeval forest either by snowshoeing, snow-rafting or in a reindeer sleigh. The Village, an area created in 2014 but built in classic/folk “machiya” style architecture (sliding screens, wooden lattice façades etc.) offers an exciting variety of shopping and dining experiences. And if you need even more options, you can also try Annupuri International Ski Area and Hanazono Ski Resort in Niseko. At Rusutsu Resort and Kiroro Resort, the snow experience becomes more diverse including snowmobiles, dogsleds and even snow Segways!

Niseko Village

Furano is at the center of Hokkaido and has attained worldwide fame because of the race held there. Diamond dust (a ground-level cloud composed of tiny ice crystals), night wanderings (thanks to the shuttle bus service) and the Furano Kan-Kan Mura event (including Snow Dome, a bar made of ice) in the enormous grounds of the New Furano Prince Hotel are some of the things the town has to offer. In the south of Furano there is Tomamu which boasts Hokkaido’s largest ski resort, the Hoshino Resorts Tomamu. Besides the snow and ski activities, it offers the fantastic Ice Village, an attraction unparalleled in the world.

Dynamic! Wild! Taste the thrill and exhilaration of sprinting in the snow on a snowmobile or in a snow raft; choose a way depending on your level and your schedule and explore Hokkaido. Feel the deep impact of the ice drift in the Sea of Okhotsk! You can take an ice drift cruise, hitch a ride on the Norokko-go train or even wear an insulated dry suit and actually walk on the ice. Actual diamond dust is a rare phenomenon not visible unless special environmental conditions are met; the air is sparkling brilliantly as if tiny diamonds are floating in it and it occurs when water vapors existing in the atmosphere sublimate into ice crystals that dance in the air. In Kawayu Onsen’s “Diamond Dust in Kawayu” lighting show, you can have the chance to see an artificial recreation of this splendid phenomenon. A similar phenomenon is that of “frost flowers” water vapors that turn into ice on the surface of bodies of water. How these silver flowers bloom on Lake Akan’s ice is indeed one of nature’s mysteries

Winter in Hokkaido: Be prepared! To better enjoy the cold, make sure to dress really warm. For shoes, opt for something with a non-slip sole or, even better, snow boots that are cold and water resistant. (Non-slip soles can be bought at the airport or in the cities’ convenience stores.) Also recommended are down coats for the outer layer and tights or leggings for inside the trousers. Because of the great difference in temperatures (very cold outside and warm on the inside), prefer to dress in layers (gloves, caps earmuffs etc.) This will allow for better temperature control. For bags, pretty much any rucksack or shoulder bag allowing you to move your hands freely will do–vinyl bags with zippers that keep the snow out are, of course, most appropriate.

JAPANESE CULTURE

The birthplace  of martial arts

What are the first words that come to mind when you hear the words “classic Japan”? One is certainly “samurai,” right? Of course-and rightfully so: medieval Japan warriors have become legends and their fighting methods and weapons (especially the razor-sharp katana swords) attract millions of people to Japanese culture. The martial arts (or “budo”) are still alive and, well, kicking and anyone visiting Japan can see them and, quite possibly, experience them firsthand. Although not all dojo (i.e. training halls) accept visitors or offer trial sessions, several do and in any municipal or communal sport center, you’ll come across a karate, judo or kendo class with students of all ages. What budo are available? There are nine officially registered “Nihon Budo,” “Japanese Martial Arts”: karate, judo, aikido, (amateur) sumo, Shorinji Kempo (combining elements from karate and judo), kendo (fencing), naginata (fencing with the Japanese halberd also called “naginata”), jukendo (rifle-andbayonet fencing) and kyudo (archery). Together with kendo go iaido (real sword-drawing) and jodo (use of a 3’9” stick) and together with jukendo goes tankendo, another style of fencing with just the bayonet.

Karate

Sumo

But there’s more! The above are “gendai budo,” “contemporary martial arts,” created in the late 19th-early 20th century. But the older arts from which they evolved are still taught-from horseback riding to grappling (or even swimming) in yoroi (samurai armor) to firing matchlock guns. These arts are called “kobudo” (meaning “old arts”) and you can find their dojo all over Japan. So how do you search for budo? Each gendai budo has some governing organization (like the All-Japan Judo Federation, aikido’s Aikikai Foundation or the All-Japan Kendo Federation) but a good starting point for all is the Nippon Budokan in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. Besides being a great venue for budo events (championships etc.) it also offers information about the various federations and other budo organizations. As for kobudo, the Budokan is also home to the Nihon Kobudo Kyokai, (Association of Classic Martial Arts)—there you can ask about the various schools and their contact details. Also, look out for public events. Regardless of when you visit Japan, there’s probably some budo event taking place somewhere. Especially kendo and judo (easily the most popular budo) are being practiced on school, college and even corporate level so championships are being held all the time. Kobudo events are a little scarcer but there are three big ones in Tokyo: on November 3, in the Meiji Jingu Shrine, on February at the Budokan and on April in Asakusa’s Riverside Sport Center—in first you can also catch an exciting yabusame (horseback archery) tournament.

So since you are already in Japan, don’t miss this opportunity. Look for budo, watch a training and ask if you can participate in a class; unlike other aspects of Japanese culture, budo is something you can experience in the fullest sense of the word. Chances are you aren’t going to regret it!

The setting of “Chushingura” (The Tale of the 47 Loyal Samurai)

“Sentai Kosodate Jizoson” (A Thousand Jizo statues) are stone statues of children built wishing for children’s healthy growth.

In 1702, 47 ronin (masterless samurai) took revenge against their master’s enemy and then committed seppuku (ritual self-disembowelment) in this area. This is a very famous 的舞台 story in Japan and also performed in the Kabuki play 「忠臣藏」 江戶時代(1702 年) ,47 名武士為了替主君 “Kanadehon Chushingura.” Try Shinshodo’s Japanese sweets called “Seppuku monaka” whose name is associated with the Chushingura story. Sandwiched between monaka wafer shells, the red bean paste filling almost spills out. Although the appearance may remind you of seppuku, it has very elegant sweetness. Another popular sweets here is yokan, a thick, jellied dessert made of red bean paste and it has different samurai drawings on its packages.

The Yonaguni-uma (Yonaguni horse) is a small Okinawa breed with a height of 110-120 cm (3’6”-3’9”).

This was my first time in Okinawa. After spending the first day wandering around Naha, I headed north to Iejima (Ie Island) a short and comfortable 30-minute ferry ride from Okinawa Island’s Motobu Port. Iejima’s charms include marine sports, some magnificent vistas and some interesting tours of WWII battlefields but the most exciting part of this visit was swimming with the horses!

Reaching the island I went straight for the Iejima Beachside Horse Park. After changing into clothes that are comfortable even when wet and securing my life-vest, I walked to the beach behind the horse ranch–the white sand was dazzling! At first we took a slow horseback ride across the seaside but at some point it was time to enter the ocean. We did it in pairs: one person riding on the horse and another grasping its tail–say what? The tail?! Yes, I was surprised too but believe it or not it was a great feeling! The combination of the deep blue sea and sky and the horses had a full healing effect on me and couldn’t believe how fast the 40 minutes fled; the next time I’m getting together with my girlfriends I’d love to do it there! In roughly the center of Shikoku, Iya Valley is nestled in a mountainous area near the border between the western part of Tokushima Prefecture and Kochi Prefecture. Sheer cliffs from dozens to hundreds meters high stretch for 20 km along the valley. You can see the emerald green Iya River flowing far below and may feel dizzy when you look down. A statue of a peeing boy stands at the edge of a 200-meter precipice, which is noted as the best viewing spot of the valley. In the old days, the local children and travelers stood up here and urinated to show their bravado. There are two hot springs that are known for the use of a cable car to go to their baths in this area. In Iya Onsen, the cable car brings you 170 meters down to the bottom of the valley. Its open-air baths are situated in the riverbed and directly connected to the source of the hot spring, which is rare in Shikoku. Lukewarm water of 38 degrees C is good to enjoy a panoramic view in a leisurely manner. On the other hand, ShinIya Onsen’s cable car brings you up to its open-air baths that command a splendid view of the valley. A day-trip use is available at both spas. For sightseeing, visit Iya no Kazura Bashi, or Suspension Vine Bridge. It is made of vine and designated as a National and Prefectural Significant Folk Cultural Property. Gigantic and bizarre-looking stones are seen for 5 km along the Oboke Gorge and you can enjoy a boat cruise. Koboke Gorge is 3 km downstream from Oboke. With the rapid stream, it is famous as an exciting rafting spot. Ochiai Village retains nostalgic mountain village scenery. A lot of dolls made of straw stand on the street and welcome you in Oku-Iya. Freshwater fish, such as ayu (sweetfish), broiled with salt, Iya soba buckwheat noodles, dekomawashi, which is a dish of potato, tofu and konnyaku (devil’s tongue) roasted on a bamboo skewer with miso, and hirara-yaki, which is a dish of tofu, vegetables and freshwater fish cooked with miso on a flat stone called hirara, are local delicacies.

Expo’70 Commemorative Park The Expo’70 Commemorative Park is a popular landmark sightseeing spot in Suita City. The Tower of the Sun is a symbolic art sculpture in the park. The park is the former site where the Japan World Exposition was held in 1970, the first world exposition that was held in Asia. Surrounded by nature, there are two areas in the park: the Natrual and Cultural Gardens and the Japanese Garden. The most famous landmark of the park is the Tower of the Sun that was created by the artist Taro Okamoto. It was built as part of the theme pavilion for the Expo. The tower is 70 meters high and the diameter of the foundation is 20 meters wide. It is a splendid sight to see up close with its powerful presence. There are three faces on the tower: the Golden mask, the Face of the Sun, and the Black Sun. Located on top of the tower, the Golden Mask represents the future. The Face of the Sun, which is located on the front, represents the present moment. And the Black Sun on the back symbolizes the past. We especially recommend seeing the Black Sun since it is rarely introduced in the media. “It is spacious and relaxing!” The recommended walking route in the park is to take a stroll around the Natural and Cultural Gardens where you can enjoy the seasonal plants and flowers, taking a nice deep breath and relaxing in this spacious area. Then, keep walking and enjoy observing the 9th century to modern day style gardens in the Japanese Garden. Let the soothing sound of the water and pond revitalize you. If you want to take a break and enjoy a cup of tea, you can visit the Japanese tea house, “Senrian.” After walking on the cherry tree lined street you can stop by the EXPO’70 Pavilion, a commemorative facility for the Japan World Exposition, and then visit the Tower of the Sun. The duration of the route is approximately 2 hours long. After your walk you can relax and recharge in the footbath called “Mori no Ashiyu.”

For those who are not good at cooking fish, this sardine dish is recommended because it is easy. This rice bowl dish is hearty and an appetizing delicacy. Mayonnaise is the hidden flavor of this Japanese rolled omelet. For the Japanese rolled omelet recipe, see http://www.att-japan.net/en/recipe/dish?code=EK000046

(A) ingredients: 2 tablespoons soy sauce 2 tablespoons sake

A dash of salad oil or sesame oil A pinch of soft wheat flour A pinch of ground sansho (Japanese pepper) if available (equivalent to European green pepper)

Cooking Directions Preparation: Remove the scales from the sardines. Cut off the head and remove all of the guts and bones by hand. Rinse the fish with water and dry with a paper towel. 1 Mix all of the ingredients in (A) in a pan. 2 Lightly dredge the sardines in the soft wheat flour so the sardines will be crispy. 3 Heat the salad oil in a frying pan, add the sardines and fry. Make sure to place the sardines skin-side up. When they have browned, turn over and fry. 4 Remove the sardines from the frying pan and add them to the pan with the mixed ingredients (A). Boil for 30 seconds to 1 minute on medium heat. *Spoon the sauce over the fish while boiling. 5 Serve the sardines over a bowl of rice. Sprinkle with sansho to your liking. Rail 鐵路

Japan is covered in a rail network that reaches to almost every corner of the archipelago. Most are owned and run by the Japan Railway (JR) system and the world famous “Shinkansen” bullet train is of course one of the fastest and most enjoyable forms of land transport anywhere – the distance between Tokyo and Osaka being covered in just 2 hours 30 minutes on the fastest line.

Japanese taxis can be found at the exit to every train station in the country or alternatively hailed on the streets. The red sign visible through the windshield of the car: “空車” (kusha) means it is vacant and available for hire but when the sign reads “賃走” (chinso), it is unavailable. The back door on the left side will open and close automatically so be careful not to stand too close! (All the other doors are operated manually) Rates vary depending on the taxi company but usually start at a fixed rate of 730 yen (in Tokyo) for the first two kilometers. The rate system is shown inside the taxi and receipts can be issued. In urban areas, you can usually pay by credit card for a taxi. If credit cards are accepted, a taxi has a sticker showing this on the window.

Tokyo One-Day Free Ticket (Tokyo Furii Kippu)(東京フリーき っぷ)is available for use on JR lines (inside Tokyo’s 23 cities),

subways, and the Toei Bus service for one whole day – ending at midnight – at a charge of 1,590 yen. Tokyo Subway Ticket is available for use on Tokyo Metro and Toei Metro subway lines. Prices for adults are 800 yen (1 day), 1,200 yen (2 days), and 1,500 yen (3 days). JR Kanto Area Pass is to be upgraded to JR TOKYO Wide Pass from December 19, 2015. The new pass is valid for three days and good for unlimited rides using reserved seats on ordinary cars on Shinkansen and express trains in the Kanto area. The service is now extended to Echigo-Yuzawa Station and GALA Yuzawa Station. Prices are 10,000 yen (Adults), and 5,000 yen (Children).

Long-distance buses in Japan are run by numerous companies including JR. Buses are generally more economic than traveling by plane or train but do take longer and can be affected by traffic jams at busy times of the day or night. Local buses run all over Japan as well as in the major cities and sometimes English instructions or stop announcements are used but this is not the case everywhere. We would recommend you ask drivers to remind you of where you must disembark prior to setting off.

You’ve finally made it to the hot spring. But how do you go about making use of it? Above all, you should never forget to observe the manners and etiquette needed throughout. Here are some important rules to guide you through your first onsen experience - a primer to the laws of the onsen:

1

First of all you will have to completely undress. Clothes are to be taken off in the dressing room (known as the datsui-jo in Japanese). Other than your birthday suit, you may bring one small towel or washcloth to the bathing area for washing with. Do not make the mistake of changing into and going in your bathing suit! It is not allowed. Once in the bathing area, rinse off with hot water before getting into the onsen. At some places there will be a stone tub by the entrance, at others you may be able to wash with soap, bucket and using a tap, and at other you will have to take the water directly from the onsen itself (In Japanese this is called kakeh-yu). Kakeh-yu can be done with a small bowl or bucket (sometimes with a handle). Hot water is drawn from the tub or tap and poured over the entire body to rinse thoroughly. This is considered one of the most important points of onsen manners.

2

3

After you have completely rinsed, it’s time to get into the hot tub. It’s best to get in slowly at first. Get in slowly up to your knees, then up to your waist, followed by chest, then neck. In doing so your body will slowly get used to the water temperature. Do not put the towel into the water. You may see people fold and put it on their heads, now you know why - it doesn’t belong in the water. You may also put it on the side of the tub. One dip is usually no more than 10 minutes. As there are mineral elements in the water, longer exposure is not only relaxing, but allows the body to soak up more of those minerals. Getting in at least 2 to 3 times a day is reasonable. Where tap and washing stalls are available, switching from wash stall to tub and back is up to you. Do so at will. Never bring the soap or suds into the tub! Some hot springs provide more than one tub, such as an open-air bath (rotenburo). Switching from bath to bath may also be done freely. When your body is hot and you are totally relaxed, taking a shower is entirely up to you, although may be a waste of the onsen’s mineral healing properties. Leaving them to soak in may be better for your skin. Once out of the onsen, dry off with a towel. Taking a nap is effective; bathing in a hotspring takes quite some physical energy.

Where the Wild Things Are 和风现代化机器人秀

The Robot Restaurant, a recent endeavor to create a fusion between the traditional and modern cultures of Japan, has been operating in Shinjuku's Kabuki-cho district for over two years. Although it's called a restaurant it is functionally an entertainment performance, albeit one where you can have a sushi meal delivered at your table. The performance itself features the aforementioned robots, along with a medley of mythical creatures, traditional taiko musicians, dancers and clowns, including an impressive final act where all of these performers join the stage together. It's a light-hearted jaunt through the history of Japan and its popular culture, in an intimate stage setting that gives more of a family-run impression than a big Broadway business one.The popcorn offered at regular intervals during intermissions helps to establish this homey atmosphere even further. Still, the production values on display here are undeniably high, and the large ensemble cast works with a clear sense of unity and professionalism. Most importantly, they genuinely seem to enjoy performing the show. This one comes recommended for those who want to get up close with the wacky side of the Land of the Rising Sun. The show performs three to four times a day, but with its popularity steadily rising, reservations are recommended.
