Sensu (handheld foldable fans) 折扇

Furin (wind chimes) 風鈴

The origin of sensu is said to go back to around the 9th century. Open it up and you can get cool anytime, anywhere. A wide variety of foldable fans are available, from 100 yen-shop ones to high-end ones contained in a wooden box. They also make great souvenirs.

Hanging at windows and making a cool sound when stirred by a breeze, furin are one of the signature summer features of Japan. Enjoy the refreshing sound. Famous types of furin include “Edo Furin,” made with glass (Tokyo) and “Nambu Furin,” made with cast metal (Iwate Prefecture).

據說折扇的原型是在西元九世紀時所發明。攤開輕搧，隨時隨地都能感受涼風吹徐。折扇的種類繁多，從百圓商店的廉價品到桐木盒裝的高級品一應俱全。也很推薦當作伴手禮。

There is an unprecedented kakigori boom in Japan. Various unique kinds of kakigori are offered, including traditional ones with azuki red beans, luxury ones generously topped with seasonal fruit, and ones with homemade unique syrups.

Cold Noodles 日式涼麵 There are many kinds of cold noodles in Japan, including zaru-soba (cold soba noodles served with a dipping sauce), somen (cold thin wheat noodles served with a cold dipping sauce), and hiyashi-chuka (cold Chinese-style noodles with various toppings). A member of cold noodles, hiyashi-ramen from Yamagata, has become available at more places in Tokyo. Try it if you have a chance. 蕎麥麵、素麵、日式中華涼麵等，讓人在夏天想一嘗為快的涼麵可說是種類繁多。近年東京也越來越多餐廳可以吃到源自山形縣的冷拉麵，如有機會可千萬別錯過了。

Nippara Shonyudo Limestone Cave (Tokyo) 日原鐘乳石洞（東京都）

With an annual average temperature of around 10 degrees Celsius, Nippara Shonyudo is a place where you can feel the coolness even in summer. Located in Okutama with its abundant nature that makes you forget you are in Tokyo, the cave shows you the stunning beauty of natural figures formed from stalactites and limestone. 日原鐘乳石洞一年四季的氣溫都約在 10 度左右，因此夏季也能享受涼爽感覺。位於東京的奧多摩地區，其豐饒的大自然景致令人難以想像這是在東京都內。旅客可在此恣意欣賞鐘乳石及石灰岩構成的自然造型之美。

Okunikko is a cool place throughout the year, with an average temperature of 20 degrees Celsius in August. Kegon no Taki is a largescale waterfall in which the water from Lake Chuzenji falls from a height of 97 meters at a single roaring stretch. After seeing the falls, you can also enjoy onsen in the nearby area. 奧日光的 8 月平均氣溫落在 20 度左右，十分涼爽。奧日光的中禪寺湖水由 97 公尺高處奔騰而下，形成壯觀的華嚴瀑布。附近還有溫泉，不妨一齊體驗。 The roaring sound and splashing water at the waterfall basin.

Running for 25.5 km from Senzu Station to Ikawa Station, this torokko (tram) train offers a refreshing landscape along the scenic gorge, making you forget the summer heat. Get off at Oku oi Kojo Station and you can walk on a walking path alongside an iron bridge over the emerald-green dam lake. *There may be cases in which an observation car is not connected. 千頭站與井川站之間全長距離 25.5 公里，觀光小火車徐徐而行其中。溪谷沿線的風光明媚、景色遼闊，讓人忘卻難耐的酷暑。在奧大井湖上站下車後，可以在碧綠的湖水上的鐵橋旁的步道上悠閒漫步。※ 列車可能沒有展望車廂。

Seek Refreshing Relief from the Heat Around Fujigoko (Fuji Five Lakes) 環遊富士五湖，清涼一下！ Located at the foot of Mt. Fuji, these five lakes are at an elevation higher than that of Tokyo or Osaka, allowing the temperature to be lower and the atmosphere cooler. From July 1 (or partly from July 10) to September 10, the mountain is open for climbing* and it is also the best season for various events and for fruit-picking. If you are in Japan during this period, visiting this area should certainly be on your schedule!

Shimane, a historical area where many Japanese myths are set. There are many recommended spots to go from the Izumo Enmusubi Airport.

Izumo Taisha Shrine 出雲大社

According to legend, this is the place where the gods from all over Japan gathered together once a year to have a conference of match-making. Going through the torii gates made with stone, wood, iron, and copper in order from the entrance, you can experience a shrine visit with a mystical ambience. The main hall built in 1744 is one of the largest shrines in Japan and is designated a National Treasure. Located at the front of the Kaguraden Hall building, one of Japan’s biggest shimenawa (sacred rope made with straw or hemp) is overwhelming in appearance. It is said that this shrine is beneficial for romantic relationships, so it might be a good idea to visit the shrine while feeling the ties with someone important to you. 傳聞這裡是全國的良緣之神一年一度聚會場所。您可從入口穿過石、木、鐵、銅的 4 座鳥居，在神祕的氣氛中參拜。本殿於 1744 年建造，是日本最大級別的神社，同時也被指定為國寶。神樂殿的正面掛著日本最大級別的注連繩，魄力十足。據說前來參拜有助於締結良緣，想要遇見命中註定的人，就千萬別錯過哦。

Walking to the west for about 20 minutes from Izumo Taisha Shrine, you will see Benten Island standing just off of the beach. This island used to be located off of Isa Bay, but as the beach gradually extended, it is now almost accessible on foot from the beach. In the evening, the island, water, and sky are dazzling with orange tints, creating a beautiful landscape. 從出雲大社往西步行 20 分鐘左右，便可看到矗立於海濱的「弁天島」。這座小島原先位於稻佐灣外海，隨著沙灘日益擴大，現在已經可以走到小島附近了。黃昏時，弁天島、海水、天空被染成一片橘色，景色十分美麗。

Tamatsukuri Onsen

Said to have been there for 1,300 years, Tamatsukuri Onsen is famous as a hot spring for beautiful skin. The area has many onsen ryokan (Japanese-style hotels) as well as souvenir shops and outdoor footbath facilities, which makes the town a perfect place to enjoy strolling around wearing yukata (cotton kimono) in a relaxing atmosphere. As you walk along the river in this area, you will come across several art works in the motif of Izumo mythology placed here and there.

Mizuki Shigeru Road is in Sakaiminato City, the hometown of Japan’s legendary manga artist, Shigeru Mizuki. The whole town is tinged with colors of the world of yokai (spiritual monsters), which were depicted by Mizuki Shigeru. 「水木茂之路」位在漫畫家水木茂的故鄉境港。街道以水木茂創作的妖怪世界為主題，散發出濃厚的妖怪色彩。

Mount Mitoku’s Nageire-do, a National Treasure, is said to be the least accessible temple in Japan. In order to get to the building, you have to climb up a steep and arduous path. Cook nanohana briefly in boiling water and season with kombu dashi. Break the stem end of the podded peas, pull string along both spines as needed, and cook them briefly in boiling water. Remove the thick skin from the udo and cook it in boiling water to remove harshness. 2. Cook takenoko and aburaage in the mixture of sake, soy sauce, and kombu. 3. Beat eggs well with salt, pour part of the egg mixture into a frying pan to make a thin omelet, roll it up, and cut it into 5-mm wide strips.

Ingredients (5 servings) Nanohana (turnip rape), sayaendo (edible-podded pea), udo (spikenard) (the white part of the stem at the bottom), bamboo shoot, egg (thin egg omelet), red rice prawn, kamaboko (cured fish paste), crab (boiled and flaked), salmon (pickled in the mixture of vinegar, sugar, and salt), anago (conger eel, boiled in the mixture of sugar, mirin, white soy sauce, and sake), kohada (spotted sardine, salted then pickled in vinegar), aburaage (deep-fried thin tofu slice), 3 cups rice, sushi vinegar (commercially available mixture), mitsuba leaves for decoration *The ingredients except for the rice and vinegar can be substituted with others. Prepare the amount of each ingredient as you like.

5. Slice kamaboko into 3-mm pieces. Cut the salmon into diagonal slices. Cut anago into 5-mm strips. Make light cuts at 1-mm intervals on the surface of kohada and then slice it into 5-mm pieces. 6. Pour sushi vinegar over freshly cooked rice to make sushi rice. Add the mixture of bamboo shoot and aburaage into the rice and mix. 7. Dish up the rice mixture, place the toppings on the rice as you like, and finish it up by placing the thin egg omelet and mitsuba on top.

Directions 1. Pour water into a bowl, add the tempura flour into the water, and mix them briefly. 2. Pour a generous amount of oil into a pot, heat it to 180 degrees Celsius, and place the ingredients into the oil. Watch for the temperature of the oil not to go too high, and deep-fry the ingredients. Cook the ingredients thoroughly by leaving them in oil for a while after the ingredients that were at the bottom when they were first put into the oil come up to the surface. 3. Serve with salt or tentsuyu dipping sauce.

Chef's Advice The important point for making delicious sushi rice is to mix it with sushi vinegar quickly in a cutting motion. If you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a wooden sushi bowl, you can use a regular glass or metal bowl. We used takenoko since it is spring, but you could use kanpyo (dried shavings of calabash gourd) instead.

❸Bekko-zushi is a type of sushi unique to the Izu Islands made with white fish fillets marinated in soy sauce with local green chili pepper. This local specialty of the Izu Islands is characterized by the spiciness that goes well with the umami of fish and sweetness of sushi rice. ❹You can enjoy delicious ice cream made with fresh Oshima milk while looking at the ranch in a relaxing atmosphere. ❺This park has one of Japan’s largest scale camellia gardens with about 1,000 kinds of camellias blooming in February and March. ❶Although it is an active volcano, no activity has been observed in the present time and it is possible to hike up to near the crater to look at the evidence of eruptions. Niijima Glass Art Center not only exhibits a collection of glass artworks but also offers glass-making workshops.

Buses are generally more economic than traveling by plane or train but do take longer and can be affected by traffic jams at busy times of the day or night. Local buses run all over Japan as well as in the major cities and sometimes English instructions or stop announcements are used but this is not the case everywhere. We recommend you ask drivers to remind you of where you must disembark prior to setting off.

Koganezaki Furofushi Onsen is in Aomori Prefecture and its open-air baths at the rocky beach offer a splendid view of the Sea of Japan and the coast combined. Originally it was a beach where hot springs oozed out only weakly, but in 1970 after boring to 200 meters under ground, the hot water gushed out in force. It is said that the water, which is rich in salt and iron, is effective in retaining body heat, preventing feeling chilly after a bath, and has a strong antiseptic effect that helps heal injury. It has a thickish texture and is called “behada no yu” (water good for beautiful skin) with metasilicic acid, which is said to be good for the skin, and hydrogen carbonate ion, which smooths the skin, in abundance, in addition the warmth keeping and moisturizing effects. Live performances of Tsugaru-shamisen, a local musical instrument, can be enjoyed at Furofushi Onsen Hotel from 8 p.m. every Saturday. It is close to the World Natural Heritage site Shirakami mountain range. As for sightseeing spots, Juniko (“twelve lakes”) is a collective name that comprises 33 small lakes and ponds, which are nestled in the western part of Shirakami mountain range in Aomori Prefecture, surrounded by beech trees. Among them, especially, Aoike Pond is famous. Its water is transparent and the blue color like blue ink is breathtakingly beautiful. Trekking in the beech forest is also recommended. From the Shirakami mountain range the water flows into the sea off Fukaura, the town home to Furofushi Onsen, and abundant and highquality seafood are caught in every season throughout the year, such as turban shells, abalone, tuna, sea bream, yellowtail, Atka mackerel, and others. * Without night lighting, the open-air bath is available from the sunrise to the sunset. Day trip visitors can soak from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Around dusk and dawn, gnats, gadflies, and mosquitoes gather, so preparing to protect against them is recommended.
