About 400 years ago, this symbol of Kumamoto was constructed by Kato Kiyomasa, a military commander who was considered an expert of castellation. Constructed using the state-of-theart technologies of that time, this robust castle didn’t get destroyed even in the Seinan War in 1877 when the castle and its surrounding area was a battlefield, some 300 years after its construction. Currently, some areas are off limits because of the damage to the castle tower and stone walls caused by the earthquake; however, you can see the castle under recovery from the Ninomaru Park and Kato-jinja Shrine. A special opening of the castle (Stage One), is scheduled to start on October 5, 2019! You will be able to see a restored castle tower close-up. A special observation route will be completed in spring 2020. In spring 2021, a fully restored castle tower is expected to be open to the public.

Said to continue since the ancient time, this festival is held on August 15 and 16 every year. A large number of women dancing with a golden toro (lantern) create a fantastical scene just like out of a dream. The lanterns are traditional crafts of Yamaga made with washi paper. Outside the festival time, there are several hands-on workshops, including one where you can wear the festival costume and golden toro on your head.

The light goes through an unlimited series of changes due to the presence of people, creating a fantastical space.

Memory of Topography Rice terraces have been helping to maintain clear water and a healthy ecosystem, supporting the traditional lifestyle based on rice cultivation since ancient times. In a space without any maps or routes, you wander about in search of artworks with your finely honed five senses. That’s how you should enjoy teamLab Borderless. By immersing yourself into the artworks, you will be able to feel the moment when there is no border between you and others and the world. Borderless artworks move out of a room, interact with other artworks, influence each other, have no border with other artworks, sometimes fuse with others, and connect with others without border to form a continuum. The artworks go through a series of irregular changes according to your movements as well as other people’s movements. Wandering about the space, you can enjoy an artwork which exists only at this moment at this place.

EN TEA HOUSE

Weightless Forest of Resonating Life Standing on ground or floating in space, spherical objects look as if they are defying gravity. The ice cream is made with tamaryokucha tea leaves, which were hand-picked by a traditional method and have a rich taste and aroma. As soon as you put a spoon of the ice cream into your mouth, the umami and sweetness of the tea spread all through your mouth.

Located only about 1 hour and 30 minutes away from Akihabara, Mount Tsukuba, one of the One Hundred Famous Japanese Mountains, has double peaks, Nyotai-san and Nantai-san, which make the mountain the lowest among the 100 famous mountains, allows easy climbing on a day trip. The mountain offers picturesque scenery with seasonal flowers and colored leaves in autumn, including about 1,000 hydrangea plants on the hillsides gorgeously blossoming in June. Referred to as a counterpart of Mount Fuji as in the phrase, “Fuji in the west, Tsukuba in the east,” from ancient times the whole mountain has been worshipped as the sacred body of a god in Japan’s ancient mountain worship. An old shrine on the hillside with about 3,000 years of history, Tsukubasan-jinja Shrine, enshrines a divine couple; therefore, it is said that the shrine will bring romance. Even if you visit the shrine alone, it might bring you good luck in romance!

att.Kitchen Japanese Cooking Class in Ningyocho hosted by att.JAPAN This time, we learned how to make temari sushi & inari sushi. Do you know what temari sushi or inari sushi is?

Temari sushi

Temari sushi is a colorful ball-shaped sushi with various toppings often served during happy occasions like Hinamatsuri (Girl’s Day).

Inari sushi

Inari sushi is sushi rice wrapped inside abura-age (thin deep-fried tofu pockets) simmered in a sweet sauce. The students who participated in this cooking class made different types of sushi for Hinamatsuri (Girl’s Day), a day to celebrate female children and pray for their health and happiness on March 3. Toppings such as tuna, smoked salmon, scallop, salmon roe, sakura-denbu (fish flakes) and kinshi-tamago (fine strips of omelet) were prepared to decorate their own sushi. The students all had fun making their own cute temari sushi and inari sushi. One person had too much rice, the sushi ball became too big to eat it in one bite. They also made a side dish of nanohana-no-shira-ae (mustard blossoms mixed with mashed tofu) and sumashi-jiru (clear clam soup).

Tips! For the temari sushi, try to put small amount of rice when wrapping the rice into a ball. For the inari sushi, the thin abura-age can be easily torn apart so carefully fill in the rice. From Japan

This time, we made temari sushi, a side dish of nanohana-no-shira-ae (mustard blossoms mixed with mashed tofu) and sumashi-jiru (clear clam soup). It was my first time making temari sushi but it was much easier than I though it would be. I definitely would like to try it at home!

Yamanaka Onsen in Ishikawa Prefecture has a long history: it is said that the famous Buddhist priest, Gyoki, discovered the onsen about 1,300 years ago. Since then, many people have visited this onsen in the mountains to get their illnesses cured and to refresh themselves. It is said that the famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho and his disciple, Sora, visited this onsen in 1690 during their journey to different regions of Japan and praised it as one of the best onsen in Japan, along with Arima (Hyogo pref.) and Kusatsu (Gunma pref.). At the site in the mountains, along with abundant nature, there is still smooth hot spring water gushing from the ground. The onsen water is reputed to be good for various ailments, such as rheumatism, nerve pain, surface injuries, and skin problems. Walking in the beautiful valley is one of the ways to enjoy Yamanaka Onsen. Along the Daishoji River flowing through the town, there is the 1.3 km Kakusenkei walking path, offering visitors a great opportunity to enjoy the seasonal colors of nature, including cherry blossoms, fresh green leaves in spring, and autumn foliage. Although it is located in the mountains, Yamanaka Onsen is still close to the Japan Sea, and therefore it receives fresh seafood from Hashidate Fishing Port in Kaga City throughout the year. One of the great features of Yamanaka Onsen is that you can enjoy food from the sea, such as abalones and rock oysters in summer and snow crabs and yellowtails in winter, as well as food from the mountains, such as mountain vegetables, at the same time. In addition, this area has been preserving Japan’s representative traditional culture, such as colorful Kutani-yaki ware and Yamanaka-shikki lacquerware. Yuge-kaido Road, stretching from the center of the onsen town, is lined with many galleries for traditional crafts, including Yamanaka-shikki and Kutani-yaki.
