An icefall is a waterfall that is frozen by severe cold. The icefall that shines in ice blue when the light penetrates is a superb view of Oirase Keiryu Stream that can only be seen in winter. Hoshino Resort Oirase Keiryu Hotel has an open-air bath with a rising icefall, and hotel guests can join the Oirase Keiryu tour for free. Illumination at night is also overwhelming. You can also experience snowshoe hiking and try your hand at making Oirase Lamps. 冰瀑意指因嚴寒而結冰的瀑布。光線灑落後便閃耀著冰藍色的冰瀑，是奧入瀨溪流冬季絕無僅有的美景。星野集團奧入瀨溪流飯店內有冰瀑聳立的露天浴池，而且住宿者可免費參加奧入瀨溪流之旅。夜晚的點燈亦璀璨精彩。還有雪鞋健行與奧入瀨燈籠製作體驗。

The forest is dotted with lakes and marshes, and they show mysterious colors, such as emerald green, cobalt blue, turquoise blue, etc., depending on the location, which makes it hard to believe they are created by nature. (“Goshiki” literally means “five colors.”) The lakes and marshes reflected in the snowy scenery are especially superb. A guided snowshoe tour is the only way to go to Goshikinuma in winter. 散居在森林中的沼澤，依地點不同，呈現出翡翠綠、鈷藍，或綠松色等讓人難以想像是由自然創造的神奇色彩。雪景映襯下的湖沼尤為絕景。冬季只能參加附帶導遊的雪鞋散步才能前往欣賞五色沼。

“Biwako Terrace” is a stepped observation terrace located on a mountain that has an altitude of 1,100 meters. You can enjoy a great panoramic view of Lake Biwa. In winter, you can enjoy a fantastic snow scene while relaxing at a terrace cafe. “Biwako Valley” is also a popular ski resort in Kansai. 「琵琶湖觀景台」是座落於海拔標高 1,100 公尺高山的梯形展望露臺，可將琵琶湖的大全景盡收眼底。冬季可在露臺咖啡館一邊放鬆，一邊欣賞夢幻的雪景。「琵琶湖山谷」是關西大受歡迎的滑雪場。

From the powder zone to the flat and wide zone, there are various slopes where both beginners and advanced people can enjoy skiing. Non-skiers can play in the snow at the adventure park. At the SORA terrace, which is 1,770 meters above sea level, you can see a sea of clouds if conditions are right. 從粉雪區到平坦寬敞區，備有各式新手與高手皆可享受其樂的路線。不滑雪者則可在冒險樂園處玩雪。在位於海拔標高 1,770 公尺的 SORA terrace，若條件吻合，還可欣賞雲海之美。

Muhyo, rime ice or powder of frost, are ice crystals that can be seen on branches and trees and are formed from sprayed clouds and fog on a day when the temperature is below zero. From December to early March, you can see this fantastic view for an average of 12 to 14 days a month. Let’s go on the Unzen ropeway and see the fabulous muhyo. 霧冰是在冰點下的日子裡，雲霧等吹附於樹枝上的冰晶。此一夢幻美景據說是從 12 月起至 3 月初，每月平均只有 12 ～ 14 天得以欣賞。搭乘雲仙纜車前往欣賞吧！

Sapporo Snow Festival

(Sapporo City) Odori and Susukino Sites: Feb. 4 to 11 Tsu Dome Site: Jan. 31 to Feb. 11 One of the biggest and most popular winter events in Japan, and many people visit from all over the world. At Odori Park in the heart of Sapporo, which is the main site, both small and large snow sculptures are located along the 1.5-km-long park. The beautiful light up service starts from sunset time and it is a must-see. At the Tsu Dome site you can enjoy the huge snow slides and various events where you can interact with snow.

Sounkyo, Kamikawa Ice Fall Festival (Kamikawa Town) Jan. 23 to Mar. 15

Sounkyo is located in the central part of Hokkaido. The light-up of about 30 large and small ice statues, including a 13 m high ice observatory, is very romantic. “Northern Ice Bar” where you can drink Japanese sake (open only on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays) and “Ice Shrine” made of ice are unique and fun.

There are about 200 large and small lanterns and snow statues in the park and the snowcovered castle tower and old pine trees are lit up. You can enjoy a fantastic atmosphere around Hasuike pond where 300 mini kamakura (snow huts) are set up.

The “Juhyo,” frost-covered trees that are also called snow monsters, are beautiful with differing aspects from the shining white silver in the daytime to the colorful illumination at night. “HANABI in Winter” fireworks launched on the ski slope is a must-see.

Lake Yamanaka Mount Fuji Snow Festival (Yamanakako Village in Yamanashi Pref.) Feb. 1 to 16

The large snow slide and the barbecue in the snow are popular events that both adults and children can enjoy. On February 15, the Ice Candle Festival will be held and you can enjoy romantic candles and fireworks displays. In addition to the attractions for adults and children, such as the snow-covered hovercraft and snow-covered slide, Ice Candle Festival will also take place in a snowy setting in which you can enjoy romantic scenery with a lot of lights and fireworks. The weather is relatively stable from the beginning to the middle of February, so it is said that there are many days that you can see from the lakeside the beautiful “Diamond Fuji” when the sun sets over the top of Mount Fuji.

Kamakura Festival

(Yunishigawa Onsen in Tochigi Pref.) Feb. 1 to Mar. 1 During the daytime, you can enjoy a barbecue inside a kamakura (reservations required) at the Sawaguchi venue, or play on a long snow slide at “Yunishigawa Mizunosato Snow Park.” In the evening you can enjoy the fantastically lit-up snow scenery at each venue.

巨大的雪造溜滑梯與雪中 BBQ 廣受歡迎，是老少咸宜的活動。2 月 15 日將舉辦冰蠟燭節，可欣賞蠟燭浪漫的景色與煙火競演。

白天在澤口會場的雪洞中烤肉（須預約），或在「湯西川水之鄉雪樂園」玩雪造長溜滑梯，夜晚則享受各個會場點燈後的夢幻雪景。

賞眾多燈火營造出的浪漫風景與煙火共演。

從 2 月初至中旬，天氣相對穩定，據說有較多機會可從山中湖畔欣賞太陽沉落富士山頂時的壯麗景色── 「鑽石富士」。

Winter!

One of the 100 Famous Mountains of Japan, Mount Tsukuba, comprising the double peaks of Mount Nyotai (877 meters) and Mount Nantai (871 meters), is a perfect place for your day-trip hiking, since it is located only about one and a half hours away from Akihabara by train and bus and it is the lowest mountain among the 100 Famous Mountains. After coming down the mountain, you can still have lots of fun, especially in the cold winter.

There are lots of delicious ramen shops which serve warm ramen noodles to warm up your body.

Tsukuba Udon This is a noodle factory and shop. The noodles are made with Tsukuba’s local flour “Yumeshiho,” and are characterized by their chewy and smooth texture. Depending on the day, you can observe the noodle making and have a taste of noodles (payment is required). If tasting is not being offered, you can buy noodles as a souvenir and enjoy the same delicious taste at home as the one in the store.

“Tsukuba” in the name of this noodle dish consisting of “Tsu” for “tsukune (chicken meatball),” “Ku” for “kuro-yasai (black vegetables, such as shiitake mushrooms and burdock root),” and “Ba” for “bara-niku (ribs).” This noodle dish is made entirely with local ingredients.

TSU= 雞肉丸子（TSUKUNE）、KU= 黑色蔬菜（KUROYASAI，指香菇或牛蒡等）、BA= 五花肉（BARANIKU），取以上食材第一個日文發音，組成「筑波（TSUKUBA）」這個地名，是完全選用當地食材烹調而成的烏龍麵。

From the open-air bath and the large bath, you can see the extensive Kanto Plain and enjoy great views, such as Mount Fuji standing out against the sunset.

Universe of Water Particles on a Rock where People Gather An iconic large-scale artwork in this museum. Water cascades down along a large wall where flowers bloom. When people stand on the art or touch it, they become like rocks that change the flow of water, causing continuous change in the stream of water.

Eliminating any kind of “borders,” digital art can offer a completely new experience. The art won’t stay in one place, but rather moves from the present space to go somewhere else. att.Kitchen Japanese Cooking Class in Ningyocho hosted by att.JAPAN This time, we learned how to make gyoza, eggplant agebitashi (deep-fried and marinated) and corn rice. The participants for this cooking class were Santee, a Nepali student studying in Japan, and Madoka, a Japanese girl.

The filling included ground pork, cabbage, nira Chinese chives, and ginger. They worked together to cut them all.

Add seasonings and chopped vegetables to ground pork and mix them by hand.

As it takes too long to make gyoza skin from flour, they used commerciallyavailable gyoza skin.

Student’s Comment

From Japan Both Santee and Madoka had experience making gyoza, so the three of them were doing very quickly.

They made different shapes of gyoza with different amounts of filling. Comparing the difference among the gyoza, they laughed together, saying “your personality appears in the gyoza you make.”

They were talking about how the gyoza turned out beautifully and the ones they shaped and cooked themselves were better than those at restaurants, having a great time eating together.

I participated in the cooking class for the first time. Before joining the class, I thought that cooking Japanese dishes took time and care, but it was very surprising that we actually made lots of dishes in a short time. I learned how to cook crispy gyoza, and I will try it at home!

After deep-frying the eggplant, put it into a marinade and let it cool down so that it can absorb the flavor.

Although eggplant agebitashi is one of the standard Japanese dishes, Santi had never tried it yet, so she was really looking forward to eating it.

Advice In order to make crispy g yo z a , t a k e t i m e t o thoroughly smother them by leaving them on high heat with a lid on.

c r is p y ! After washing rice and putting it in a rice cooker, shave corn from the cob using a knife and add them to the rice cooker.

The point is to put the cob into the rice cooker with rice and corn, as the cob releases nice umami while cooking and the rice absorbs the umami to make it more flavorful.

Then, start cooking with a regular cooking course. As they used a whole corn on the cob, the corn rice was very rich in corn, with half rice and half corn.

Located in Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, Shirabu Onsen is a longestablished onsen with a history of more than 700 years. Featuring a clear and colorless sulfur spring with various healthful effects, it has been one of the popular places for hydropathic treatment in the Tohoku area for a long time. Several onsen inns are located in a village nestled among the scenic mountains, offering unique and original ways to enjoy onsen, including an onsen waterfall using hot spring water naturally gushing out and a stone-made open-air onsen that blends into the surrounding nature. In this area, you can walk around and visit different onsen facilities. Located at an altitude of 900 meters, the area around Shirabu Onsen is a great place to enjoy various outdoor activities, including climbing at Mount Nishiazuma, one of the “100 Best Mountains” in Japan, strolling in Tengendai Kogen Plateau in summer, and skiing at Tengendai Ski area in winter. What’s a Kotatsu 暖爐桌是什麼？

A kotatsu is a low blanketed table with a heater fixed to the underside. Sit on the floor with your legs tucked in and you’ll feel so snug, you won’t want to move.

Mandarins are said to stave off colds and hydrate the body, the perfect cold-weather go-to. Different prefectures, however, have their own customs. In Fukui Prefecture, for instance, the kotatsu snack of choice happens to be not mandarins but mizu yokan, a confection of red bean jelly. Then there are people who associate cats with kotatsu. Our warm-blooded feline friends seem to love curling up within the radius of a kotatsu.
