Constructed as a government-operated silk mill in 1872, this facility supported Japan’s sericulture and silk-reeling industry for 115 years as a cutting-edge pioneer in the silk-reeling industry. Located 1,800 meters above sea level, this onsen is also referred to as “unjo-noyu” (hot spring water above the clouds). It is a high-temperature sulfur spring, with abundant water output of 5.4 million liters per day.

位於海拔標高 1,800 公尺的高處，又有「雲上之湯」的美稱。湧泉量豐富， 1 日多達 540 萬公升的高溫硫磺泉。

When you visit this place, you can play with the cute kanban neko, or mascot cats, welcoming customers at the front desk!

Parks 公園 Parks are the places where the local people visit to take a break, relax, and feel refreshed. Shin-Koiwa has “Nishi Shin-Koiwa 5-chome Park,” (nickname: Monchhichi Park). The nickname comes from “Monchhichi,” a character loved around the world created by Sekiguchi Corporation that is located in this area. The park has lots of cute Monchhichi designs. The area around Shin-Koiwa Station has other Monchhichi-based decorations and Monchhichi-designed manholes. 要說當地的休憩場所，就非公園莫屬了。新小岩有「西新小岩 5 丁目公園」（暱稱：萌趣趣公園）。一手打造出受到全世界喜愛「萌趣趣」的——株式會社 Sekiguchi 就在這裡，可愛的萌趣趣設計，在公園中也隨處可見。新小岩站及車站周邊，也看得到其他萌趣趣裝飾，以及以萌趣趣設計的人孔蓋。

Days & Nights 商店街白天 & 晚上 at Shotengai Shopping Streets Around Koiwa and Shin-Koiwa stations, there are several shotengai (shopping street), serving as a kitchen for people, including “Flower Road Shotengai,” which has long been a fovorite of local people, in front of Koiwa Station, and “Lumiere Shotengai,” in front of Shin-Koiwa Station, which is lined with about 140 shops and stores, including delicious delis and cafés. Among them, “Showa-dori Shotengai” in front of Koiwa Station has a surprising spot called “garake wall,” a wall entirely decorated with over 6,000 mobile or feature phones. This wall was created by the owner of “Wataden,” an electronics store with a history of over 80 years in business, who was so attached to old mobile or feature phones that he couldn’t dispose of them and started putting them up on the wall. These shopping streets, which are busy with housewives and students during daytime, may show different faces at night. In particular, “Sun Road Shotengai” and “Jizo-dori Shotengai,” in front of Koiwa Station, have lots of pubs, where many workers visit to relax after work at night. If you like drinking, especially of the “pub crawling” type, these places could be your paradise. 小岩站、新小岩站周邊有好幾條商店街，每條都熱鬧非凡，相當於當地庶民的廚房。長年受到當地人熱愛的小岩站前「flower road 商店街」，就有 140 家店面相連，還有不但能買到美味熟食，也有咖啡廳的「LUMIERE 商店街」。小岩站前的「昭和大道商店街」更有著令人歎為觀止的景點。有超過 6,000 支手機，排滿了整面牆、通稱「非智慧型普通手機（日本獨特規格）牆」。據說，那面手機牆是因為創業至今已超過 80 年以上的「wataden」店主，捨不得把用過的手機丟掉，而把它們裝飾在牆上，才形成這片驚人的景象。白天是因家庭主婦和學生熱鬧非凡的商店街，晚上會搖身一變，展現與白天不同風情。特別是小岩站前的「Sun Road 商店街」、「地藏路商店街」中有許多居酒屋，晚上有許多上班族來這裡放鬆。如果您真的喜歡邊走邊喝，到這裡，應該會覺得來到了天堂吧。

Mt. Tsukuba in springtime is all ablush with the colors of cherry blossoms as well as a myriad of other flora. But that’s hardly all. There are many more famous cherry blossom spots well worth seeing on the Tsukuba Express (TX) Line.

Fukuoka Dam boasts its place among the “100 Best Tourism Spots” in Ibaraki Prefecture and is famous as a cherry blossom viewing place. The flowers of the 600 Somei Yoshino cherry trees, a particularly pretty variety, reflect spectacularly on the river parallel to the 1.8 km long promenade. Best time : Early April (Coinciding with the Fukuoka Dam Cherry Blossom Festival) Access: Free shuttle service is available during the Cherry Blossom Festival from Miraidaira Sta. Or a 39 min walk from the TX Midorino Sta. (Bus service available part way)

Persimmon shira-ae

Buri daikon is a dish with buri (Japanese amberjack) which is in season in winter, and daikon simmered together. While daikon takes away the undesired smell of buri, the umami from the buri goes into the daikon. It is a typical winter dish in Japan. The participants were Agathe, an exchange student from France, and Haruka from Japan.

Advice

Miso soup with pork and vegetables Agethe came to Japan on a student exchange program. She had tried today’s dishes, but had never made them herself. According to her, some ingredients commonly used in Japanese cooking, such as burdock roots and daikon, are rarely seen in France. She was surprised to use fruit like persimmon for cooking. With great interest, she started cooking following the instructions of instructor Chie. She had never used a mortar before, but looked like she was having fun with Haruka, working together—one held the mortar, and the other used the pestle to crush tofu. When Chie was teaching them some tips and tricks for making each dish, Haruka, being Japanese, commented that she had never known some of them and was taking some notes with surprise. As for Agethe, these were the first Japanese dishes that she had made. She looked so happy and was eating the food with much delight!

By pouring boiling water over buri fillets before putting them in a pot, you can remove the undesired smell and make the dish more delicious. When you place buri fillets, make sure to place their skin side up and not to touch them while simmering to prevent the fillets from falling apart. For takikomi gohan, adding a tablespoon of sake when you put the ingredients into the rice before starting to cook will make cooked rice fluffier.

Located in Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture, Bessho Onsen is an old hot spring town with more than 1,000 years of history. Because the original charm of the hot spring town has been preserved through the centuries, it has become the setting for many movies and television shows. The mildly alkaline quality of the spring is considered to help skin become silky smooth. You can enjoy soaking in these waters on daytrips to the many Japanese inns (ryokan) or bath facilities in town. In olden days, the area around Ueda City, including Bessho Onsen, flourished with the burgeoning silkworm industry, and several well established ryokan, founded in the Edo era (1603–1867), remain popular today. The center of the town’s prosperity were the public bathhouses, 3 of which are still open: Oyu, Daishiyu, and Ishiyu. Ishiyu appears in the popular historical novel “Sanada Taiheiki” (Saga of the Sanada Clan), written by Shotaro Ikenami (1923–1990). Daishiyu is famous because, according to legend, the great Buddhist priest Ennin (otherwise known as Jikaku Daishi, Head of the Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple near Kyoto) bathed here. Finally, Oyu’s popularity partly rests on its open-air bath, which is rare for a public facility. In addition, people can enjoy a relaxing day in the baths of “Aisome no Yu,” a facility run by Ueda City, which also has a restaurant and a tatami room. This area is also famous for matsutake mushrooms. In autumn, matsutake dishes can be eaten at many restaurants, and also at seasonal matsutake-specialty shops called “matsutake goya.” For sightseeing, the town is home to a large number of ancient temples, such as Anraku-ji, Joraku-ji, and Kitamuki Kannon. Nearby Shiodadaira is also dotted with old temples and shrines. At Ueda Castle Park, located 30 minutes by train, Senbon Sakura Matsuri (the 1,000 Cherry Blossom Festival) is held in April and the Autumn Leaves Festival is held in November every year.

太平記》裡曾經出現過的溫泉。「大師湯」是比叡山延曆寺座主圓仁慈覺大師曾泡過的溫泉。「大湯」則是一座在共同浴場設備裡，擁有罕見的露天浴池。此外，上
