As the name suggests, this mesmerizing pond attracts many summer tourists for its blue waters. However, the pond freezes in the winter, creating a silver world wrapped in tranquility. There are night illuminations that take place from November to April, inviting you to bask in the magical scenery!
Sapporo Snow Festival, Sapporo’s main winter event, will be hosting its 73rd event in 2023. The Odori Site will showcase five massive snow statues, as well as many others big and small. Among them will be “Citizen Snow Sculptures,” sculptures carefully made by the citizens of Sapporo. Making a snow sculpture is far from easy, and those embodying the remarkable ideas of the sculptors can only be appreciated here at this time of the year. Don’t forget to visit the Susukino Site where you will find an array of majestic ice sculptures!
60 minutes by car from Sapporo to Iwamizawa, and you’ll be ready to experience the Kamakura (snow hut) Cafe. Snow hut-making is a traditional winter event enjoyed in many of Japan’s snowy regions. With 44 ski courses and slopes, this ski resort offers a view of the Sea of Japan from the mountain peak on sunny days. Furthermore, the onsen town at the foot of the mountain has 13 open-air baths, so you can go onsen-hopping to refresh both body and soul! Travel just a bit farther to see the wild “snow monkeys” taking a dip at Jigokudani Yaen-Koen. You can get a rare glimpse into the lives of Japanese macaques!
This ski resort is one of the Tohoku region’s biggest snow resorts. Its best feature is none other than the close-up view of Zao’s juhyo (frostcovered trees) that you can see while skiing or snowboarding. The frostcovered trees are most beautiful around January to February. A strong ly acidic sulfur spring, Zao Onsen is also known as the “Springs of Beauty” for its skin-beautifying effects.
The many courses for beginner and intermediate skiers, as well as the kids’ park, makes this resort highly recommended for families. You can even experience walking on snow with snowshoes! Kusatsu Onsen is one of Japan’s “Three Most Famous Hot Springs,” boasting the largest amount of natural spring water flow in Japan. There are plenty of pub lic bathhouses, bathing facilities for day trips, and footbaths to warm up your feet after a day in the snow. And don’t forget to visit Yubatake, the symbol of Kusatsu Onsen!

Hop on the Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo Station and arrive in as quickly as 74 minutes! Since it is directly connect ed to the GALA Yuzawa Station, you’ll be able to head out to the slopes in no time. Not only are there 16 ski courses that cater to the needs of beginner- to advanced-level skiers, but there are also various other ways to enjoy the snow, including snowmo biles and outdoor saunas.
This ski resort can be accessed via a 1-hour train ride on the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station. It offers snow parks for sledding and slopes for beginners, mak ing it an ideal destination for kids and debut skiers. There are also out let malls and other shopping centers nearby, so you can enjoy both ski ing and shopping!

Average temperature
In Sapporo, the average temperature in January and February is around -2 to -4 degrees Celsius. It is not uncommon to have days when the highest temperature remains under zero. This goes for other snowy re gions including the Tohoku region, Nagano Prefecture, and Niigata Prefecture. Be sure you’re well-prepped for the cold before you visit.
Season
Though depending on the climate and region, it is said that the best season for skiing and snowboarding is January to February. Some ski resorts are open until April or May for post-winter “spring skiing.” The main difference from the high season is that as the snow melts from the surface of the slopes, the snow takes on a texture contain ing more moisture.
Clothing & other necessities
When you’re skiing or snowboarding, your body will heat up and make you sweat. Most ski resorts offer ski gear rentals, but we rec ommend wearing quick-drying, highly-absorbent base layers under your ski wear.
Gloves, thick socks, and knitted hats are a must!
Goggles: Wearing goggles helps reduce glare from the light reflecting off the snow, improving visibility and allowing you to ski more comfortably.

The Hida Takayama area is one of the most prolific producers of carpentry and woodcrafts in Japan. In Kyoto City, the season for the annual “Winter Trip in Kyoto” campaign has arrived. Marking the 57th year of the campaign this year, there will be a special exhibition of a total of 15 valuable cul tural treasures, which are usually closed to the public, at various temples and shrines in the city. Each of the cultural treasures is precious and include architecture, gardens, and art works that are related to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Edo shogunate in the early 17th century, and also related to that era.

Located adjacent to Tokyo, Chiba Prefecture is dotted with hot spring resorts cen tered around the Southern Boso area. Among others, Katsuura City and Kamogawa City, facing the Pacific Ocean, are especially popular thanks to the mild weather which creates a semi-tropical resort atmosphere. It takes only 1.5 to 2 hours from Tokyo, and this good accessibility makes them more popular.
Located along the ocean, many hot springs in this area have water with high salt concentration, which offers a refreshing feeling on the skin. Some of the hot springs on the mountain side contain sulfur, which is said to make the skin nice and smooth. It is easy to get around these nearby onsen areas by train or car, so visiting more than one to see and enjoy differences in water quality and scenery is recommended.
Katsuura City is a port town with eight fishing ports, and in particular is known for having one of the biggest volume of bonito catch landings in Japan. That allows you to enjoy excellent seafood for reasonable prices. As many of the hotels and ryokan (Japanese-style inns) are located along the coastline, guests can enjoy soak ing in a bath while looking at the great ocean view.
Kamogawa City has not only the charm of the ocean but also that from satoyama, the border zone between mountain foothills and arable flat land. One of the rep resentative spots with such characteristics is Oyama Senmaida, an overwhelming landscape with terraced rice fields covering the mountainside.
Starting business in 2003, Kamogawa Onsen is a relatively new onsen and home to more than 20 hot spring facilities. Ryokan Kamogawakan opened a new facility, Onsen Puro “HARUKA,” in 2019 on the rooftop. It has been gaining popularity, commanding a breathtaking view of the ocean from up close.
Also in Katsuura, new natural onsen spa “edén” just opened in 2022. This dropin facility is a so-called “infinity onsen,” boasting seamless scenery of the ocean and spa. Both “HARUKA” and “edén” are mixed bathing facilities where guests wear a bathing suit or special wear, so recommended for families and even onsen beginners.
