Hailed as the capital from 710 until 794 when the capital was transferred to Heiankyo (Kyoto), Nara has been etched into history as the hub of ancient Japan. Called “Heijokyo,” it was a large, 24 million square meter-capital that spread approximately 4.2km from east to west and 4.8km from north to south, with the “Gekyo” flanking the eastern side. The Gekyo (“outer city”) had numerous shrines and temples where travelers still now go sightseeing or pay their respects. This area is now known as “Naramachi.” 奈良在西元 710 年曾經是日本的首都，直到西元 794 年遷都平安京 （京都） 為止， 因此這是一座以古代日本的中心之姿銘刻於歷史的城市。奈良又被稱為 「平城 京」 ，東西約 4.2 公里、南北約 4.8 公里，包含附屬於東側的 「外京」 ，是一座闊達 2,400 萬平方公尺的的巨大都城。外京有許多的神社寺廟，現在也吸引著絡繹 不絕的旅客來此參拜與觀光，這個地區被稱為 「奈良町」 。

Sarusawa-ike Pond
Machiya (traditional Japanese townhouses) line the streets, preserving remnants of the late Edo to Meiji periods (mid–19th to early 20th century). 保留江戶時代末期起至明治時代 （19 世紀 後半～ 20 世紀前半） 風貌的町屋林立於此。
Gangoji Temple 元興寺
Most of the Naramachi area was once the premises of Gangoji Temple, which has over 1,300 years of history. In the Asuka area of Nara Prefecture, Japan’s oldest, authentic Buddhist temple Hokoji (Asukadera) was established at the end of the 6th century, and moved to the current place around 718 and renamed to Gangoji Temple in accordance with the capital relocation. In 1998, it was registered as one of UNESCO’s World Heritage sites as the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara, and the Gokurakudo Hall and Zen Room were also designated national treasures. Furthermore, a part of the structure’s roofing tiles is known to be the oldest tiles in Japan. 「奈良町」 大部分都是過去的元興寺的用地。這是日本最古老的 正統佛教寺院，開創於 6 世紀末，擁有超過 1,300 年的歷史，隨 著法興寺 （飛鳥寺） 遷都平城而重新遷建於現址，並改名為元興 寺。1998 年被列為聯合國教科文組織世界文化遺產 「古都奈良 的文化財產」 之一，極樂堂與禪室皆獲指定為國寶，在其屋頂瓦 片有一部分鋪設著日本最古老的瓦片。

In Nara Park, known for its many deer, is Sarusawa-ike Pond, a body of water with a perimeter of 360 meters. Visitors can take in the view of Kofukuji Temple’s five-storied pagoda reflected upon the water’s surface. In the vicinity of Sarusawa-ike Pond is Starbucks Coffee, an ideal place to take a break while relishing the view of the pond. 位於鹿隻眾多的奈良公園的用地內，周長 360 公尺的池塘， 可欣賞興福寺的五重塔倒映在水面的風景。猿澤池的岸邊還 有星巴克咖啡，最適合一邊欣賞池畔美景，一邊在此小憩。
CAFÉ ETRANGER NARAD The place to go to quickly satisfy your sweet tooth is “CAFÉ ETRANGER NARAD,” a restaurant and cafe inside the Nara City Tourist Information Center “NARANICLE.” Their soft-serve ice cream is topped with cute deer cookies. Besides the classic vanilla flavor, they also offer a “Yamato Tea” flavor, a specialty of Nara. 2

Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten (Nara Main Store) 中川政七商店 奈良本店
With fans all over Japan, Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten was established in Nara Prefecture in 1716 and specializes in household items based on Japanese crafts. Its store in the “Shika Saru Kitsune Building” shopping center opened in April 2021 and displays a large variety of craft and specialty items from Nara with a cute but sophisticated feel, such as kaya-ori woven towels. Visitors can also get hands-on experience of Japanese crafts as well, such as dyeing postcards made from handmade, handwoven hemp.

coto mono Step inside the lattice door of a terrace house in an alleyway and you will find this stationery/general goods store. The store is packed with various stationery items from Japan and around the world collected by the stationery-loving shop owner. Notable among them is the store’s original “Nara Ufufu Stationery” which showcases motifs of Nara Prefecture. Popular items include the memorable “Buddha Clips,” as well as notepads and masking tapes illustrated with images of deer.
Yamato Kobo Naramachi Store Nara is known for its abundant production of traditional Japanese footwear such as setta – Japanese leather-soled sandals. At Yamato Kobo, Nara craftsmen specializing in setta-making offer various types of the sandals, including those of traditional designs to modernized sandals that pair well with Western-style clothing. They are distinguished for their breathability and comfort and are popular with many consumers overseas, too.

This store was launched by Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten in an effort to spread the culture of the Japanese tea ceremony. Here, visitors can enjoy tea and wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets). In addition to the casual table seats, the zashiki seats (featuring a low table on tatami mats) offer a view of the courtyard and Japanese-style structures possessing over 100 years of history. Visitors can get sets with which they can prepare their own tea, or make reservations to take part in Japanese tea ceremony workshops to further delve into the culture.
At the heart of this commercial complex is the Naramachi Information Center, a visitor center found inside a house built in the first half of the 20th century. The shopping center is also home to the restaurant Kamado and tea room Saezuri, both ideal spots to take a rest while exploring Naramachi. Saezuri serves up a feeling of warmth and comfort through its wooden interior and also serves teas and seasonal cakes.

This glamping facility is perched atop elevated ground overlooking the ocean of Nanki Shirahama, one of the finest resort areas in the Kansai region. The deck space is home to a total of 10 dome-shaped tents, each with its own designated observation space and BBQ area. Guests can savor a lavish meal with locally grown vegetables and seafood, all while gazing at the view of breathtaking Shirahama. At the adjoining “Fureai Hiroba” square, guests can also feed horses and experience horseback riding. Interaction with the animals is sure to soothe your soul.

Kansai region, may well surprise you with just as many worthy attractions as its neighbors in Western Japan. For those of you who are already well-versed with Japan’s endless discoveries, you may have heard of Shiga’s crowning jewel of nature, the majestic Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest lake, or the prefecture’s historic pride, Hikone Castle, which can boast of being one of the only five castles in Japan designated as National Treasures. If you follow me on my social media, you will know that I am an avid seasonal flower chaser. Being a tropical-born Malaysian, I am endlessly fascinated by the myriads of floral surprises that pop up when you least expect it in Japan. While most travelers probably are familiar with Instagram cliches of cherry blossoms, hydrangea and the like, here’s a true rare seasonal gem you may have not yet heard of: baikamo. Baikamo is so rare that it was my very first time seeing it, and after a quick googling I learned that in English it is called “Water Crowfoot.” These tiny, adorable white petals bloom out of an alga-like cluster from May to August yearly, and only grow in the clearest streams. One of the best places to enjoy Baikamo is Samegai-juku, an old post town along the Nakasendo which connected Edo (now Tokyo) to Kyoto, in Maibara City. Expect a taste of authentic local life in Samegai-juku, where residents still carry out their daily lives little changed from the past in this charming little town, while enjoying its natural setting, including the very famous water running from the very stream those beautiful baikamo grow in. I couldn’t help but dip my fingers into the clear stream and was very surprised to find that in the mid-summer heat, the water was ice-cold! Next day’s first destination is Biwako Hakodateyama, one of the many ski resorts in the prefecture as Shiga is one of the top destinations for skiing in the Kansai region. Come summer time, the resort turns into a floral paradise that is full of shutter opportunities at every corner you turn. First of all, a gondola ride takes you up to an elevation of 630 meters, where a breathtaking panoramic view of Lake Biwa and lush green paddy fields unfold before your eyes. And then, a path lined with rainbow-colored wind chimes greets you with its soothing jingle, signaling that the summer time is here. As you walk further up, you sigh at the magnificent display of rainbowlike curtains – called Takashima Chijimi – swaying gently in the cool breeze, slowly revealing a stunning vista that makes you wonder if you have, indeed, walked into an Instagram wonderland. And, indeed, Biwako Hakodateyama is just such a place. Take a moment to appreciate the grandeur of Lake Biwa which stretches beyond the horizon, seeming vast as the ocean. On a clear, sunny day, this gorgeous view is definitely one memory that you will cherish for a long time! Finally, we are coming to the legendary Shirahige-jinja Shrine that recently often makes the top of Instagram’s explore page when it comes to scenic destinations. While you are likely to stumble across many other floating torii gates if you look hard beyond the most iconic one in Miyajima of Hiroshima Prefecture, Shirahige’s picturesque torii standing tall in Lake Biwa, is one with lots of historical significance. Access to the shrine is not so easy, especially with public transport, but you may be delighted to know that since you have come all the way here, at least as a reward you will be blessed with longevity for praying at the shrine, as the deity enshrined here is Sarutahiko no Mikoto, who is known as a god with a long white beard (which is called “Shirahige” in Japanese, hence the name of the shrine), and will bestow the divine favor of granting visitors the blessing of long life. Hopefully, we all live long enough to be able to return to Shiga Prefecture many more times to explore the endless hidden charms it has to offer. *Only shooting is done without wearing a mask, with careful attention to surroundings.

The food at the JR Shin-Osaka Station is more delicious than ever! “EKI MARCHÉ SHIN-OSAKA Sotoe” opened outside the East Exit in March 2021, and now boasts a total of 48 shops in and outside the gate. You can grab a bite to eat while waiting for your bullet train or try some take-out food from a famous shop—whatever you choose, this “food capital” of Osaka is an ideal place to relish Osaka.

Once the Daimaru Shinsaibashi North Building, this shopping center reopened in November 2020. Its main feature is the 6th floor that focuses on all things pop culture. Among the stores that carry merchandise of pop culture characters both from Japan and overseas, there is even a booth dedicated to the American casual fashion brand “GBL” inside the “Donguri Kyowakoku” store that targets Studio Ghibli fans. Another popular store is “CAPCOM STORE OSAKA,” a shop of game maker CAPCOM, which has created successful games such as “Monster Hunter.”

The Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art reopened in Spring 2020. First built in 1933, the main building was known for its amalgamation of Japanese and Western-style design. It now incorporates a modern design while preserving its original essence, and is in itself a work of art. The rooftop terrace of the new contemporary art gallery “Higashiyama Cube” offers a view of the Higashiyama mountains that is as splendid as the architecture of the building. The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto 京都國立近代美術館
The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto focuses on artwork from western Japan, mainly Kyoto, collecting and displaying paintings, crafts, and photographs. The building is prized for its sleek and modern architectural design, the achievement of architect Fumihiko Maki. Located next to the canal, the museum cafe “café de 505” serves handmade pasta and Japanese sweets such as mitsumame (mixture of boiled beans, agar cubes, fruit pieces). The Hosomi Museum Kyoto 細見美術館
This museum mainly showcases the collections of three generations of the Hosomi Family, starting with that of business mogul and Japanese art collector Kokoan Hosomi. The building incorporates a modernized concept of “Wa” (Japanese-style) with three floors above ground and two basement floors. On the uppermost floor is the “Kokoan Japanese Tearoom” which offers an expansive view of the peaks of the Higashiyama mountains.
