“BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER”
This work seeks to explore the different perspectives of the beholder.
<HOME>
Home is where the journey begins.
There was a time long before now, where I–and many more like me–were conditioned. We were under pressure, trying to fit in and needed permission. Absorbing all the comparisons as truths, striving to be in control. We wanted to make it better and become powerful. Measuring each truth, wanting to conceal, finally breaking away, accepting it’s time to reveal. This is the journey within.
<OUTSIDE>
Outside is where the digital self learns, connects, and socializes. This persona is built and influenced by societal expectations and perceptions.
<INSIDE>
Inside is where you see yourself as you really are. This is a state of self-acceptance, compassion, and empathy.
Post-Show Q&A
Join the artists of mixtamotus after the show each night for a facilitated Q&A with the collaborators and photo/video opportunities.
#FILTERED
*Original Poem Inspired by conversations with mixtamotus dancers.
ABOUT THE SHOW
Materializing out of mixatmotus’ interest with the human-machine relationship and social media, #Filtered explores the age-old idiom “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. A tongue-in-cheek journey of perfectionism between the digital and real self is represented by five dancers, unique larger-than-life generative projections, and original music. The interplay between the real self, puppeteering the digital self, and vice versa deciphers the measurement of beauty and how ultimately beauty can be found within.
#Filtered is a platform to offer inspiration, entertainment, and new perspectives on how the Dallas community can engage with the intersection of live and digital art forms through dance. Collaboration with the creative team and crowdsourcing are critical to mixtatmotus’ creative process. In addition to sourcing content from the digital space including Instagram polls, Instagram/Facebook Live conversations, and Instagram Stories
‘Questions,’ mixtamotus has incorporated data collected from live audiences at #Filtering–a live-performance installation that was presented at the Bath House Cultural Center in May 2022 to create phase 2 #Filtered.
The attendees of #Filtering voted on the color purple to be included as the main color for #Filtered, and for the “cloning” effect to be used as part of the interactive multimedia design for the show.
