The mission of the nonprofit AT&T Performing Arts Center is to provide a public gathering place that strengthens community and fosters creativity through the presentation of performing arts and arts education programs.

We Entertain. We Educate. We Inspire.

Dear friends, Great performances are best experienced in person. Not on television, film, your mobile device or the internet. But live theatre, dance, opera, music. The passion, excitement and power of seeing art unfold, right there in front of you… it doesn’t get any better than that. That’s at the core of what we do at the nonprofit AT&T Performing Arts Center. We, along with our resident companies, bring you some of the region's — and the world’s — finest performances in our intimate, one-of-a-kind venues. From the staff and volunteers who greet you at the door with a smile, to the operations team making sure every set piece is where it belongs, to the team which brings thousands of students to the Center each year for its impactful arts education programs, our passion is to make sure you (and everyone who visits the Center) leave feeling you’ve experienced something special. We want our guests to know that these artists, performances and the cultural core of our city —  all of this is here for every one of you. This Report to the Community, covering January 1, 2017 to the end of our last fiscal year, July 31, 2018, shines a spotlight on some of these successes. You’ll read about:

• The tremendous progress we’ve made toward completing the Center’s Fulfilling the Vision campaign to retire our construction financing debt, and the generous donors making it possible. (page 30) For us, the accomplishments highlighted in our 2017/2018 Report to the Community are among the many ways the Center is working to be THE cultural gathering place for our North Texas community. And a heartfelt thank you to the generous support of our patrons, donors, Board, staff, city leaders and our community. The AT&T Performing Arts Center is where great performances — live and in person — entertain, educate, inspire and keep you coming back for more. We hope to see you again soon!

Sincerely,

Matrice Ellis-Kirk Chair of the Board of Directors AT&T Performing Arts Center

• Some of the amazing diverse programs, artists and people we’ve presented at the Center, including a former First Lady, a hip-hop violin duo and a Texas legend. (Pages 6-13) • How our groundbreaking Elevator Project has become the must-see series for arts patrons wanting to discover some of the best arts organizations in Dallas. (page 12)

Debbie Storey Interim President & CEO AT&T Performing Arts Center

ENCORES

The Winspear Opera House was an early U.S. stop on David Byrne’s “American Utopia” tour. Byrne’s performance in the venue helped display the power of the Winspear as one of the best acoustic and intimate performance halls around. Even with a dozen instrumentalists playing on stage at once, one critic called the sound “immaculate” and declared Byrne’s performance as “perfect.”

YEARS OF SHAKESPEARE

37 Plays 154 Sonnets The final curtain came down on what had been an exciting, artistic adventure for the AT&T Performing Arts Center. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, a five-year initiative to present every work of the great bard, finished up with a marathon reading of Shakespeare’s sonnets. Local artists, celebrities and community members took turns reading sonnets in a day-long event. Complete Works was a collaboration with the talented artists at Shakespeare Dallas, who performed staged readings of all Shakespeare’s plays. The program was made possible by the generous support of Joy and Ron Mankoff and the Mankoff Family Foundation.

Jeffrey Schmidt, actor and artistic director of Theatre Three, was one of dozens who took the podium to let their iambic pentameter flow in a loving sonnet finale and farewell to The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, March 2017. PROGRAMMING 13

Since 2017, the AT&T Performing Arts Center has made significant progress in securing commitments toward the Fulfilling the Vision Campaign to retire its remaining construction debt. The Center secured a major gift from the Texas-based Moody Foundation: $12M for the Center’s capital campaign and an additional $10M to create the Moody Fund for the Arts, an endowment supporting the city’s small arts organizations. In recognition of these gifts, the City of Dallas renamed Dallas City Performance Hall to Moody Performance Hall. Originally, both gifts were to be paid out over ten years. But at the end of last year, The Moody Foundation — recognizing the need to reduce debt service costs — accelerated the payments, completely funding both gifts. A number of additional donors have made significant gifts and commitments to the campaign as well, leaving the Center with $2.3M to raise.
