East Central opened their 2022 season at home against nationallyranked Harding and more than held their own against the Bison, losing 29-12. Defensively, the Tigers limited the potent rushing attack of Harding under 220 yards and forced four fumbles, recovering three. Offensively, however, ECU struggled to get much going to capatilize on the takeaways and totaled just 161 yards of total offense.

Offensively, the Tigers feature a multiple spread offensive attack. In their first game of the season, that offense took on one of the top defensive unites in the country in Harding and was held to just 161 yards of total offense (147 passing, 14 rushing). Ball security was not an issue as it was in the matchup a year ago as ECU did not turned the ball over after doing so five times last time.

On the ground, the Tigers ranked sixth in the league giving up an average of 178.6 yards per game. Through the air, East Central had the fourth-ranked pass defense allowing 192.4 yards per game. Overall, that defensive unit came away with 15 takeaways with 10 interceptions and five fumble recoveries.

Leading the offense once more for the Tigers is Kenny Hrncir. Now a three-year starter at quarterback, the Hrncir has totaled nearly 4,500 yards through the air and just over 1,000 yards on the ground for his career.

This will be the 24th meeting all-time between Arkansas Tech and East Central in a series that dates back to 1926. The series has been played in earnest since 2011 as both ECU and Tech were charter members of the GAC. Since 2011, ECU leads 7-3. Overall, ECU holds a 14-9 advantage in the all-time series. This will also be the 14th game played between the two in Russellville and ECU has a lead in those games, 8-5.

The last of those fourth-down stops by the Wonder Boys’ defense came late in the third quarter and with the Tigers (1-1. 1-1 GAC) having scored a drive prior to go up 13-3. On that defensive stand, ECU gained possession inside Tech territory following a turnover and worked their way down to the Tech 8-yardline for a 3rd-and-2 attempt. That play lost a yard as Caron Holloway and Gio Williams wrapped up two-time first team All-GAC tailback Ontario Douglas back at the Tech 9-yardline.

Despite the loss, ECU was still in chip-shot territory and set up to attempt a 25-yard field goal.

The Wonder Boys elected to go for a normal kickoff in hopes of another defensive stand and getting the ball back on final time. The Tigers, however, were able to keep the ball on the ground and secured enough first downs to run the remainder of the clock out and hold on to the three-point victory.

The Wonder Boys would be unable to do anything with the ensuing possession and punted after a three-and-out, giving the Tigers the ball back with plus field position and 1:54 left in the Keepingthird.

On the field goal try, Tech’s Trayon Jones blocked the kick to deny points for the Tigers. That block was an exclamation point on an all-around great individual performance by Jones as he registered six tackles and three pass breakups.

The momentum from that block transferred over to the Wonder Boys offense as they put in their best drive of the game. Gaining possession at the ECU 6-yardline, Tech proceeded to go on a 16play, 94-drive that chewed up 7:29 of game time. The final play of that methodical drive came with 5:23 left in the fourth quarter and was a three-yard toss play to Brandon Hunter.

In the game, the Wonder Boys (0-2. 0-2 GAC) struggled to get their offense on track throughout the early goings, but were kept within striking distance by a strong defensive effort that forced four turnovers with three coming on downs.

ADA, oklA. – A late fourth quarter rally attempt fell just short for the Arkansas Tech football team on Saturday night in Ada, Okla. as the Wonder Boys fell to East Central by a score of 13-10.

Going for it on fourth down, ECU’s quarterback Kenny Krncir scrambled for two yards, but fell a yard shy on a tackle by De’Veyon Smith.

the ball on the ground, the Tigers were able to push the ball inside the 10-yardline and had 1st-and-Goal from the Tech 9-yardline as the game advanced to the fourth quarter.

The first play of the final period was another rush for lost yardage as Derek Albers and George Brooks cleaned up the TFL, pushing ECU back to the Tech 11-yardline. ECU got back near the goalline and to the Tech 6-yardline following a short pass completion to set up a 3rd-and-Goal from the 6-yardline. On the third-down play, Devin Burns netted a solo TFL and dropped ECU’s Hrncir for a loss of two back to the Tech 8-yardline.

When the original Jerry passed away in late 1937, the headline in the Arka Tech proclaimed “Campus Loses Mascot in Passing of Jerry.”

ARKANSAS TECH 2022 FOOTBALL

Jerry the Bulldog was adopted as Arkansas Tech University campus ambassador by proclamation of the ATU Student Government Association during its meeting at the Doc Bryan Student Services Center on Wednes day, Oct. 23, 2013.

The action by the ATU SGA represented the re-establishment of an Arkansas Tech tradition that had been lost for more than three-quarters of a century.

The original Jerry spent much of his time on campus at the armory (later known as the Stroupe Building) with National Guard Battery F. The students and guardsmen there adopted Jerry as one of their own.

An article from the Feb. 26, 1936, issue of the Arka Tech student newspaper stated that Jerry was “always present at anything of importance at the armory,” which was a social center of campus at that time and the site of Arkansas Tech home basketball games.

The first modern Jerry, whose full name is Jerry Charles Young I, was born on July 17, 2013. He is an English bulldog. He was introduced during a Homecoming Saturday ceremony on Oct. 26, 2013, which was the 103rd anniversary of the first day of classes at Arkansas

Visit www.atu.edu/jerry to learn more about Jerry the Bulldog.

The original Jerry was a daily part of life at Arkansas Tech in the mid-1930s. He was owned by William O. Young, who oversaw the business affairs of Arkansas Tech as secretary and bursar from 1917-41 and acted as interim president of the college from 1923-25; and his son, Robert A. Young Sr., who grew up to serve as purchasing agent, business manager, vice president for business affairs and vice president for adminis tration and finance at Arkansas Tech from 1941-84 as well as interim president in 1972. Dr. Robert A. Young Jr. has continued his family’s Tech tradition by serving as president of the Arkan sas Tech Foundation and as a loyal supporter of Tech athletics.

During his time at UAM, Shipp mentored eleven all-Great American Conference players.

In 2021, Shipp coached a pair of All-GAC players and improved the team’s win total from the previous season. Overall, the Wonder Boys were also more competitive with three of the defeats being single-possession games with a total point differential of 13 points. They also pushed nationally-ranked Henderson State to overtime, and limited the high-powered offensive attack of Harding to some of their lowest marks of the season.

Prior to his time at UAM, Shipp was on staff at Tech as the wide receivers coach for three seasons (2011-2013). During his first stint in Russellville, Shipp helped the Wonder Boys offense average 30 points and 400 yards of total offense per game during a 2012 season that featured former Montreal Alouettes quarterback Tanner Marsh. Additionally, his kickoff return team of 2011 led NCAA Division II in returns for touchdowns with three. He also coached a pair of all-conference receivers during those three seasons in Russellville.

Lawson began his coaching career at Alabama, his alma mater, in 2001, where he was a student assistant coach for two seasons before stepping into a graduate assistant position for the 2003 and 2004 campaigns. While in Tuscaloosa, Lawson assisted in two top20 recruiting classes and was a part of the Crimson Tide’s 2001 Independence Bowl and 2004 Music City Bowl teams.

Josh lAWson @JWlAWson1 Defensive Coordinator

In his first season as defensive coordinator in 2012, Lawson helped engineer a significant turnaround in the Southern Arkansas’ defensive efforts. The Muleriders ranked at least 50 spots higher in the national rankings in all five major defensive categories from 2011, including ranking sixth nationally in rushing defense per game, a rise of 120Duringspots.his time in Magnolia, Arkansas, Lawson also worked with the Muleriders’ linebackers before making the transition to defensive backs prior to the 2015 season. In his eight seasons at SAU, Lawson saw over a dozen of his players earn All-Great American Conference honors. Among those included All-American defensive back Don Unamba, who spent time with the NFL’s St. Louis Rams and has been a mainstay in the Canadian Football League (CFL) with stops playing for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2014-15), Saskatchewan Roughriders (2015), Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2017-18), Edmonton Eskimos (2019) and the Ottawa Redblacks (2020-pres.).

Prior to arriving at Tech, Lawson spent two seasons at Stephen F. Austin where he was the linebackers coach. In his final year in Nacogdoches, Lawson mentored AllSouthland Conference safety Alize Ward, who ranked 17th in the league with 7.2 tackles per game. Aretavious Hendrix and Trenton Gordon were All-Southland Conference honorable mention picks under his tutelage.

Prior to his time at Southern Arkansas, Lawson spent two seasons at UAB, working with the Blazers’ linebackers. His two years in Birmingham were preceded by a oneyear stint at fellow FCS institution Idaho State of the Big Sky Conference, where he served as the Bengals’ defensive line coach. Lawson also spent one year at Walker High School in Jasper, Alabama, filling the roles of co-offensive coordinator, special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach.

Josh Lawson enters his fourth year at Arkansas Tech as the program’s defensive coordinator and secondary Incoach.histime at Tech, Lawson has coached three All-Great American Conference players on the defensive side of the ball.

A native of Berry, Alabama, Lawson earned both of his degrees from Alabama, achieving his bachelor’s degree in secondary education in 2003, followed by his master’s in sport management in 2004. He is married to the former Meredith Jones.

4th AlabamaYear (2003)

During Lawson’s first year in Texas’ oldest town, his linebacker corps featured a trio of talented players in junior Ryan Woods and sophomores Anthony Jacobs and Teddy Britton. The three combined for 160 total tackles, including 17 tackles for loss, providing a stout wall in the heart of defensive coordinator Jeff Byrd’s defensive scheme. Lawson’s linebackers played a pivotal role in helping SFA to rank fifth in the league in red zone defense as opponents scored less than 80 percent of time when reaching the Lumberjacks’ 20-yard line. The group also created quarterback pressure and contributed in pass coverage, aiding SFA to allow just 210 passing yards per game in conference play, which was fifth-best in the Southland Conference in that category.Lawson

previously spent eight seasons at fellow GAC institution Southern Arkansas, including his last five as the Muleriders’ defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. Under Lawson’s guidance, Southern Arkansas saw significant improvement defensively, allowing just 24.4 points per game and 319.9 yards per contest in 2016.

After his inaugural season in Poplarville in 2017, eight offensive Wildcats signed with four-year programs, including offensive linemen Gerald Bell (Troy) and Tyrin Arceneaux (Nicholls State), Jamarcus Holmes (Tusculum College), Tremaine Chatman (Tusculum College), Tyler Harris (North Carolina-Pembroke), receiver Malcolm Staten (ArkansasMonticello) and running back Caleb Batie (Missouri Southern State). One of PRCC’s biggest success stories in 2017 was the emergence of quarterback Markevion Quinn. The dynamic quarterback didn’t hold a four-year offer out of high school, but after passing for 943 yards and six touchdowns and running for 879 yards and 17 scores, Quinn signed with Memphis prior to the start of the 2018 season. The Wildcat offense proved to be one of the best in school history with Trevathan’s guidance. PRCC’s 3,822 total yards were the eighth-most in school history, while the team’s 2,399 yards rushing were the most since 1994.

In his first full year of game action as OC in 2021, Trevathan engineered an offensive unit that averaged 347.8 ypg of total offense. That overall production was a balanced effort as the passing game averaged 203.6 ypg and the running game racked up 144.2 ypg.

After his time at ASU, Trevathan spent three seasons at Ole Miss, serving as a graduate assistant in 2012-13 and working specifically with tight ends before becoming a full staff member in 2014 as a quality control coach. During his time on the Rebel sideline, Ole Miss produced two of its three best offensive seasons in school history, including a record 6,153 yards in 2013. Under Trevathan’s tutelage, Ole Miss saw tight end Evan Engram become an All-SEC and All-American selection before leaving Oxford as a first-round NFL draft pick by the New York Giants.

At Northeast Mississippi, Trevathan’s 2015 offense averaged 301 yards per game and scored 24 total touchdowns. The Tigers improved drastically in his encore season, averaging 366.1 yards and finding the end zone a total of 31 times. In just two seasons with NEMCC, Trevathan saw 12 offensive players go on to four-year schools, including quarterbacks Mason Cunningham (Liberty) and Kendrick Doss (Jacksonville State), running backs Kenzie Phillips (Mississippi College) and Tiberias Lampkin (Mississippi College), offensive linemen Jo’Quarius Savage (Louisiana-Monroe), Ethan Smart (Purdue) and Ryan Baysinger (Arkansas-Monticello), tight end Ross Painter (Arkansas State), and receivers Jaylon Fair (Oklahoma-Panhandle), Joe Horn, Jr. (Missouri Western), Donta Armstrong (West Alabama) and Khalid Kornegay (Regina).Trevathan is a native of Jonesboro, Arkansas, and graduated from Jonesboro High in 2007. The Lumberjacks won back-to-back Southland Conference titles (2009 & 2010), and during his tenure finished among the nation’s top-20 in tackles for loss and top-10 in sacks. Before joining the SFA staff, Corbin spent the 2008 season at UT-Chattanooga and the previous two seasons as a defensive coach at Northwestern State (2006 & 2007). During his time in Natchitoches, La., Corbin helped produced one of the league’s more intimidating defenses. In 2006, the Demons led the league in six defensive categories, including total defense, rushing defense, pass defense efficiency, opponent first downs and opponent third downs. Corbin helped produce two of the better players in the nation in AllAmericans Ed Queen and Tori Collins.

Kurt Corbin enters his 11th overall year on the staff at Arkansas Tech University, returning to his alma mater in 2013. Corbin was previously a member of the Wonder Boys staff in 2005, serving as wide receivers coach.

Prior to arriving at Tech, Smith spent the 2018 season coaching linebackers at Southeastern Oklahoma. The 2018 Savage Storm defense ranked sixth nationally in total defense, and linebacker Seu Luafatasaga earned All-Great American Conference honors.

Following his playing career, Camp jumped right into the coaching ranks and served as a graduate assistant for two years at the University of South Alabama under his former head coach at UCA, Steve Campbell.

Before his time in Durant, Smith spent five years at East Texas Baptist University, beginning as the director of football operations and earning promotions along the way. He moved from cornerbacks coach in 2013-14 to safeties coach in 2015, and then became defensive coordinator in 2016. He also served as the team’s lead recruiting coordinator from 2013-16.

As a player, Camp was a four-year letterwinner at the University of Central Arkansas where he made 25 career starts for the Bears and was named First Team AllSouthland Conference as a senior in 2017. That same year, Camp helped lead the Bears to a Southland Conference Championship and the second of two-straight appearances in the FCS Playoffs. All told, during his time in Conway, Camp was a part of 40 victories.

In 2020, Camp moved on to Arkansas State University where he occupied a similar role under head coach Blake Anderson. In his one year in Jonesboro, Camp helped oversee an offensive line unit that protected a passing attack that ranked second in the nation (FBS) in passing offense at 364.4 ypg. That same offense also ranked first in the Sun Belt Conference in total offense at 470.1 ypg.

Prior to coming Lyon College, Sheehan served as the wide receiver coach at the University of ArkansasMonticello. In his two years at UAM, the Boll Weevils had a top-two offense in the GAC each year and had three All-GAC receivers. Included among those was All-American Jalen Tolliver, who was the 2017 GAC Offensive Player of the Year and went on to make the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals. Tolliver is the all-time leader at UAM in receiving yards and touchdowns and second all-time in the GAC in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns.

Nick Sheehan enters his third year at Arkansas Tech after joining the staff in the fall of 2020. Sheehan currently serves as the tight ends coach. Sheehan comes to Tech after spending the 2018 and 2019 seasons at Lyon College where he spent time as the special teams coordinator and recruiting coordinator.

Prior to UAM, Sheehan was at Washington University in St. Louis where he coached both receivers and tight ends. While there, WUSTL finished in the top-five in the country in offense twice and made the second playoff berth in the school’s history. Sheehan coached six all-conference players while there and helped coached the No. 1 net punt team in the country.

NOTEWORTHY :

ARKANSAS TECH 2022 FOOTBALL

• Became the first-ever female AD in Tech history

• Is first female college AD at a public institution in the state of Arkansas

Despite the challenges throughout her time as Interim Athletic Director, Davis continued to lead the athletic department forward and played an integral role in improving the department’s fundraising efforts with numerous financial gifts and pledges secured to benefit the more than 300 student-athletes at Arkansas Tech. The projects that Davis has spearheaded fundraising efforts for include facility upgrades, scholarship opportunities for studentathletes and overall enhancement of the studentathleteDavis'experience.leadership during the unprecedented time as Interim AD also yielded success in competition as Arkansas Tech has captured Great American Conference regular season and/ or postseason championships in volleyball, women's basketball, men's golf, baseball and softball as well as an NCAA Division II Central Region title in women's golf and an NCAA Division II national championship in men's golf.

Abby Davis has been a fixture at Arkansas Tech for over two decades serving as a student-athlete, coach, educator, mentor and administrator. In June 2022, after three years as the department's Interim Athletic Director, Davis made history as the interim tag was taken away from her title and she became the first-ever female Athletic Director in Arkansas TechTabbedhistory.as Interim Athletic Director in August 2019, Davis led the ATU Athletic Department through some of the most challenging circumstances imaginable.
