Audain Gala Whistler 2025
The Audain Gala has become one of the most anticipated cultural events in British Columbia, and this year we are thrilled to celebrate its 10th anniversary. We extend our appreciation to all those who contribute to its success. Within the pages of this catalogue, you will discover a selection of art that reflects the generosity of the contributing artists and collectors, while showcasing the vibrancy and creativity of BC’s art scene. Funds raised during this event are essential to advancing the Museum’s mission: enhancing its Permanent Collection of BC art, presenting world-class Special Exhibitions, and engaging with audiences of all ages and backgrounds through dynamic programming.
We are grateful to this year’s Gala Co-Chairs, Todd Shewfelt and Kevin Mazzone, for their dedication and leadership in making the Gala an extraordinary celebration. Special thanks go to Nicola Wealth, Presenting Sponsor, and Heffel Fine Art Auction House, longtime Live Auction Sponsor, for their roles in delivering an unforgettable evening. We are also thankful for the continued generosity of our Gold Sponsor RBC Royal Bank, Silver Sponsors Axiom Builders, Beedie Living, and Range Rover, as well as the additional support from Acera Insurance, CAI Capital Partners, Dentons, and Wesgroup. The collective support from our in-kind and event sponsors, as well as the individuals and businesses contributing to the Silent Auction, is invaluable and deeply appreciated.
We would also like to thank the Gala Committee, whose efforts bring this event to life. With the exceptional hosting talents of Gloria Macarenko and Fred Lee in the elegant Macdonald Ballroom of the Fairmont Chateau Whistler and Robert Heffel conducting an exciting Live Auction, we are confident the evening will be one to remember.
This year, the Museum continues to cement its place as a major player on the Canadian art scene. Recent highlights include the highly successful Tom Thomson: North Star exhibition, which celebrated one of Canada’s most iconic artists, and the groundbreaking CURVE! Women Carvers on the Northwest Coast exhibition, which showcased the remarkable talents of 14 Indigenous women artists. Our commitment to innovation is also evident in the use of our Upper Galleries to present experimental and individual artist-focused exhibitions, such as Russna Kaur: Pierced into the air, the temper and secrets crept in with a cry! and the upcoming exhibition The Coast Mountains: Recent Works by Edward Burtynsky.
We are honoured to have your support as we mark this important milestone in the Audain Gala’s history. Your generosity ensures the continued success of the Audain Art Museum and helps shape the future of arts and culture in our community. Thank you for being part of this extraordinary evening.
Sincerely,

Andrew Valko
Andrew Valko is a Canadian artist who primarily works in drawing and painting. He was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia and moved to Canada in 1968. He received his diploma in Graphic Design and Applied Arts from Red River Community College in Winnipeg and studied printmaking with Tōshi Yoshida at Yoshida Hanga Academy in Tokyo, Japan. Valko’s work has been exhibited widely throughout Canada as well as in group shows internationally. He was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1995 and his work is represented in a wide variety of public, corporate, and private collections.
Valko’s realist paintings are described as episodes in a fragmented narrative, often exploring the psychological tension caused by observation. Snow Gently Falling depicts a deer that has wandered into a vacant drive-in movie theatre bathed in the early light of a cold, snowy morning. The animal’s ears are perked, on high alert, surprised to be encountered and analyzing if it will be interpreted as prey. Valko’s quirky scene would be a unique addition to any collection.

Greg Girard
Greg Girard is a Canadian photographer who has spent much of his career in Asia. His practice was based primarily in Shanghai between 1998 and 2011 where he developed his photographic monograph Phantom Shanghai (2007). His photographs have appeared in National Geographic Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, Time, and Fortune. His work is in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario, Vancouver Art Gallery, M+ Museum Hong Kong, and other public and private collections.
Lotus Hotel depicts an interior corner of a room, vibrantly adorned with floral wallpaper. Located on 445 Abbott Street, the Lotus has historically housed Vancouver’s residents on pensions and social assistance, usually around shelter rates. At the time this work was created, Girard was living in Vancouver and staying at cheap hotels, while photographing the city where he grew up. These images published in Under Vancouver 1972-1982 (2017) show Vancouver’s final days as a port town at the end of the rail line. Soon after these pictures were made, Vancouver began to be noticed by the wider world and would transform into today’s cosmopolitan city on nature’s doorstep. Lotus Hotel would be a great addition to any collection, as Girard has deftly captured a special moment in the urban history of Vancouver.
“I did feel Vancouver was a sad town. It maybe had something to do with the way the natural beauty surrounding the city was at odds with the more down-at-the-heel parts of town where I was spending time. In those days, Vancouver was more obviously a port town, the last stop at the end of the rail line.”
of Monte Clark Gallery
David Yarrow
David Yarrow is a British-born, internationally recognized photographer whose work captures the raw, untamed beauty of the natural world. Yarrow’s photography transcends documentation, transforming into powerful, emotional narratives that invite viewers to connect deeply with the subject. He studied at Edinburgh University and initially pursued a career in finance. His photographs have been featured in The Times, and he has collaborated with supermodels such as Cara Delevingne and Cindy Crawford.
Shot in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, Gold Digger Saloon is a celebration of Telluride’s extraordinary transition from a tough mountain mining town to a famous recreational playground. What distinguishes Telluride from other resorts in the United States, is the fact that silver mining and downhill skiing, for a brief time, coexisted. The relative isolation of the town’s location delayed the introduction of skiing until 1972. The mines have long since closed, and Telluride is now a second home to many Americans who love the isolation amidst the mountains and the understated charm of a fabled town. What is special about this place is the unique imprint that two vastly different subcultures of locals have left as a lasting impression, and ultimately that Telluride is open to all. Yarrow’s notoriety and the history behind this work alongside the vibrant ski-life imagery of this large-scale piece make it a worthwhile acquisition.

Doria Moodie
Doria Moodie is an artist who lives and works in Whistler, BC. She studied French and Political Science at the University of British Columbia and pursued a career in teaching. Encouraged by local artists, she began painting in earnest after taking early retirement in 2006. She was an artist-in-residence at Knight Inlet Lodge in the Great Bear Rainforest and on the One Ocean Expedition to the Arctic. Through her art, Moodie has supported causes close to her heart through the donation and sales of her work to organizations such as the Grizzly Bear Foundation, Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, and Doctors Without Borders in Ukraine. Moodie is the official artist and member of the Board for the Grizzly Bear Foundation, an Associate Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, and a Founding Member of Whistler Out-of-Bounds Artists.
This bear portrait is at the heart of Doria Moodie’s artistic practice and reflects her profound admiration for nature. As a passionate advocate for ursine habitat conservation in BC, Moodie has devoted countless hours to observing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitats. A simultaneously dynamic and intimate quality characterizes her paintings, and each work captures the particular magnificence and unique personality of the animal subject. This beautifully rendered bear image by Moodie would add a deep sense of respect for wildlife to a corporate or domestic setting.
“I am a strong advocate for BC bears and have spent many days observing them in the wild to paint large, intimate portraits of them.”

Edward Burtynsky
Edward Burtynsky is a Toronto-based photographer whose work focuses on the environmental impact of industrial development as well as how climate change is altering the planet. Several of his major projects include Quarries, Oil, Water, Anthropocene, and African Studies. Burtynsky founded Toronto Image Works in 1985. Burtynsky continues to be a leader in artistic discourse that speaks to a greater social consciousness. He received the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2016 and was elected as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2006. His large-scale, aerial photographs are in the collections of over 60 major museums worldwide.
Coast Mountains #3, The Black Tusk, British Columbia, Canada, 2023 is an iconic Whistler area peak and offers an exciting preview of the upcoming exhibition The Coast Mountains: Recent Works by Edward Burtynsky on display at the Audain Art Museum from April 27 to September 15, 2025. This series captures the pristine grandeur of British Columbia’s natural environment, while highlighting the pressing issue of glacier retreat due to global warming. Burtynsky reflects that recent reports on the world’s remaining glaciers estimate that most of Western Canada’s glaciers will be lost due to melting within the next 80 years. Such a stunning aerial shot of Black Tusk by an internationally acclaimed artist is a must-have for anyone looking to elevate their collection.

Tom Burrows
Tom Burrows is a Vancouver-based artist, educator, and activist who has been a leading figure in the development of Vancouver’s art scene since the 1960s. He received a BA in Art History from the University of British Columbia in 1967 and continued post-graduate studies at St. Martin’s School of Art in London, England until 1969. Burrows’ work has been exhibited widely at institutions across Canada and internationally, and is a staple in private, corporate, and public institution collections. Throughout his career this artist has worked in a variety of different media on themes of homelessness, recycled materials, and houses.
Over the last 40 years, Burrows has been working with cast pigmented polymer resin as his primary medium, creating works that focus on colour fields. These works use opacity and surface texture to give the illusion of a panel that is lit from within. Nakwakto was given its title only after the work was completed. Burrows claims this is a way for the title to serve the panel as a memory device, rather than the panel serving to illustrate a narrative. Recently, several of Burrows’ polymer resin works were acquired for the permanent collection of Canada House in Trafalgar Square, London and the HBC Global Art Collection in New York. Nakwakto is a timeless classic work by Burrows that would enhance any home or office.

Bobbie Burgers
Bobbie Burgers is a Vancouver-based artist who received a BA in Art History from the University of Victoria in 1996. She furthered her art studies through summer sessions at the Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design. Throughout her career, Burgers’ work has expanded into abstractions of large floral bursts of colour achieved through loose, gestural brushstrokes and a heavy application of paint. She has extended her painting practice to include ceramic sculptural elements. Burgers has been featured in exhibitions across Canada and the United States and her work is included in major corporate and public collections such as the Royal Bank of Canada; Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP; Vancouver General Hospital; and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Canada.
In this new work created for the Audain Gala, Burgers channels the ephemeral essence of flowers through an interplay of light, texture, and depth. The composition radiates a sense of warmth, with a palette of soft creams, blush tones, and inky blues. Layers of paint, both translucent and opaque, suggest the fragile beauty of petals dissolving into their surroundings. Bold, gestural brushstrokes mingle with lighter, almost stains, creating a tension that holds the image on the verge of abstraction. The surface invites viewers to imagine the velvety softness of petals or the faint trails of a captured scent, echoing the process of enfleurage that inspired the piece.
Last Call for Sin
“Burgers’ process of painting is intuitive in the way she reveals subtle hints of representation within her brushstrokes to evoke her unique way of seeing the world.”
John Little
John Little (1928–2024) was a Montreal-based artist whose oil paintings offer a glimpse into the snow-covered urban landscapes of his home city. He studied at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal and traveled to New York to study with the Art Students League in 1947. He worked on the comic strip Bruce Gentry and later as a draftsman for his family’s architectural practice. These early experiences informed him of the importance of storytelling in his paintings and it is evident that his work represents his deep-rooted appreciation for architecture. Little is highly revered as a Canadian icon of painting and his work is widely collected by public collections such as the National Gallery of Canada, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Concordia University, and the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art.
The artist dedicated his practice to preserving elements of the past amidst an ever-changing urban landscape. Little’s painting inspires commentary on urban development while also celebrating the vibrancy of city-life. In Rue Saint-Philippe, Montreal, the orange and yellow tones of the buildings add a warmth to the otherwise crisp winter air. Such a palette fills the viewer with a sense of nostalgia for streets that might be unrecognizable in the present day. The successful bidder will gain a powerful visual portal created by John Little to transport them back in time to the slushy sidewalks of a Montreal winter.

“Little’s work inspires commentary on urban development while also celebrating the vibrancy of city-life.”

Rebecca Brewer
Rebecca Brewer is a Tokyo-born artist who lives and works in Vancouver. She uses painterly abstraction to draw attention to the often-overlooked elements in the natural world. She works primarily in oil on wood but has also produced largescale felted tapestries and pigmented resin compositions. Brewer received a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2007 and an MFA from Bard College in 2013. Her work has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions throughout Vancouver and she was awarded the RBC Canadian Painting Competition in 2011.
Sensation Seeker is a great example of Brewer’s focus on drawing attention to the overlooked aspects of the human and natural world. This work depicts free flowing expressions of mark making and explores the relationship between representation and abstraction. It is also a nod to the art historical sub-genre of sottobosco—Italian for “undergrowth” or “forest floor.” The bright orange tones in contrast with the blue background create a burning ember that leaves a lasting impression on the viewer, while the subtle incorporation of cobalt webs is consistent with her other works that reference art historical grids and the taxonomies of Western philosophy. Such a brilliant piece by Rebecca Brewer would add vibrancy to an office or home.

Robert Davidson
Guud san glans Robert Davidson, master carver, painter, printmaker and jeweler, was born in Alaska and grew up in the Haida community of Old Massett. He lives and works in White Rock, BC and is of Haida and Tlingit descent. He is the great grandson of the acclaimed artist Charles Edenshaw. Davidson learned from his father and grandfather and became an accomplished carver by his mid-twenties. After apprenticing with Bill Reid, he studied at the Vancouver School of Art. In 1969, he carved and raised a 12-metre totem pole in Old Massett, the first in Haida Gwaii in over ninety years. He was awarded the National Aboriginal Achievement Award for Art and Culture and the Order of British Columbia in 1995, the Order of Canada in 1996, and the Audain Prize for the Visual Arts in 2010.
Davidson’s work arcs from masterful totem poles and mask carvings to printmaking, painting, and jewelry design. He is inspired by traditional Haida stories, and he has developed a very personal style by incorporating abstraction and innovatively transforming the classic Haida formline. In this work, Davidson links the oral process of storytelling to both seeing and thinking via a carefully carved raised black line that runs from the mouth to the eyes and brain of the human face in profile. Tulgyaa Hlangngee is your chance to acquire a major work by one of Canada’s most respected contemporary artists and a critical figure in the ongoing history of Haida art.

Jack Shadbolt
Jack Shadbolt (1909–1998) is one of Vancouver’s most renowned painters. Born in England, he came to Canada in 1912. He studied under artist Frederick Varley while taking night classes at the Vancouver School of Art, and later became the Head of the Painting and Drawing department. During this time, he spent two years as an official War Artist in the Canadian Army. Shadbolt was named Officer of the Order of Canada in 1972 and Officer of the Order of British Columbia in 1990. His works are represented in all major galleries across Canada including the National Gallery of Canada, and in many private and corporate collections.
Jack Shadbolt is a pivotal figure of the Modernist movement in postwar British Columbia, and he became known for his concept of gestural abstraction. This artist’s work often features organic natural imagery, such as his iconic butterflies to express themes of eroticism, metamorphosis, transformation, growth, and freedom. In Regalia the viewer can find links to Shadbolt’s butterfly paintings through the use of vibrant colours to create patterns around the central figure. The overall effect is a striking human presence that would add historical value to a private or corporate collection.

David Bolduc
David Bolduc (1945–2010) was a painter whose works vibrantly explored colour and form, where simple shapes revealed surprising complexity. Born in Toronto, Bolduc refined his artistic vision at the Ontario College of Art and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Bolduc is recognized as one of the country’s foremost abstract painters. His work, including For Mike Segal, extends the modernist language of influential figures like Jack Bush, Robert Motherwell, and Jules Olitski, while carving a distinctive path of his own. As renowned curator Jeffrey Spalding described him, Bolduc was an “exotic and eccentric modernist.”
In For Mike Segal, Bolduc’s concept of “vertical members” takes centre stage. A dominant red rectangle anchors the composition, radiating lines of vibrant yellow, fiery orange, and delicate pink, creating a dynamic, halo-like effect. These vertical elements, built with expressive impasto, add depth and intrigue. Bolduc’s mastery of colour—transforming even “nothing colours” with warm vibrancy—demonstrates his belief that colour should be an active force in painting. Bolduc’s works are held in major collections across Canada, including the National Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario, and Art Gallery of Alberta, as well as in significant corporate collections such as TD Bank and Deutsche Bank. This captivating painting offers a rare opportunity to acquire a masterwork that embodies the spirit of Canadian abstraction and would be a cornerstone of any discerning collection.

Damian Moppett
Damian Moppett is a Calgary-born artist who now lives and works in Vancouver. He employs a diverse range in media including painting, sculpture, and video. His work focuses heavily on the materials and process of creating within the larger context of art history. Moppett is inspired by themes present in the work of other artists. He will often explicitly reiterate other artists’ works as a way to introduce a new narrative through the context of the present day. Visually he translates the work by using an entirely different medium to reference the original work. Moppett’s art has been exhibited widely throughout galleries in Vancouver, across Canada, and internationally. Moppett received an MFA from Concordia University in 1995 and a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 1992 where he has now taught for over a decade.
Untitled Abstraction (Green Box) features an array of deep forest green geometric shapes complemented by blocks of orange. Vibrant blue lines offer architectural hints of an interior space and are accompanied by bright red and yellow marks that pierce the picture plane. Moppett’s subdued tones of green juxtaposed against his use of bright orange hues would make this work a wonderful addition to any residential or workplace setting.
“The subdued tones of green juxtaposed against its bright orange hues ensure that it’s a show-stopping addition to any collection.”

Russna Kaur
Russna Kaur is a Vancouver-based artist born in Brampton, Ontario. She received a BFA from the University of Waterloo followed by an MFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Kaur’s work delves into personal and cultural histories. Her exploration of the painting surface as a storyteller unfolds through large-scale, multi-surface canvases, blending colour, text, digital sketches, and mixed media. Kaur is the recent recipient of the Takao Tanabe Painting Prize (2020) and the IDEA Art Award (2020). Her work is held in numerous collections including the Audain Art Museum, Vancouver Art Gallery, Surrey Art Gallery, and Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art.
Russna Kaur approaches painting as a space of infinite possibility and this work was part of her recent site-based treatment of the AAM’s Upper Galleries entitled Pierced into the air, the temper and secrets crept in with a cry! There will come a point where it is strikingly similar to glowing embers was among the modular works at the Museum which contributed to the evolution of her large-scale compositions that extended onto the walls. The vibrant blue gradients featured here are accented by Kaur’s signature manner of mark making. Such a beautiful combination of materials on a wood panel makes this work a quintessential collection addition, and Kaur is most certainly an artist of great promise on the Vancouver scene.
