The Illuminate Gala & Auction is among the most noteworthy cultural sector celebrations in British Columbia, and the Trustees and Staff of the Audain Art Museum (AAM) are grateful to all those involved. This catalogue features a wonderful selection of art that mirrors both the generosity of the contributing artists and collectors, as well as the vitality of the Province’s art scene. The funds raised allow the Museum to further develop its Permanent Collection, present the highest quality Special Exhibitions from around the world, and engage with children, adults, and seniors.

We are thankful to the Chair of the Illuminate Gala & Auction, Catherine Dangerfield, who has brought a truly inspiring level of energy to this year’s festivities. Nicola Wealth has taken a leading role as a highly valued Presenting Sponsor, while the AAM’s longtime friends at Heffel Fine Art Auction House continue to host a vibrant live auction experience. We are also grateful to our Gold Sponsor RBC Bank, Silver Sponsors Axiom Builders and Beedie Living, and Bronze Sponsor Jennifer and Eric Martin & Family. Similarly, our in-kind and event sponsors together with individuals and businesses that have donated to the Silent Auction are essential to our success. Each year, the return of a devoted group of volunteers on the Gala Committee is deeply appreciated, as well as those who volunteer their time to assist with the many tasks throughout the evening. Gala co-hosts Fred Lee and Gloria Macarenko are sure to create an atmosphere of excitement in Fairmont Chateau Whistler’s Macdonald Ballroom.

Last year’s Illuminate Gala & Auction proved to be the most successful fundraiser in the Museum’s history, and we are confident that such an achievement can be surpassed with your support in 2023. Our optimism reflects the Museum’s ongoing accomplishments on the national stage including the recent acquisition of important works by Emily Carr, F.H. Varley, Lawren Harris, and Vikky Alexander. Meanwhile, Wolves: The Art of Dempsey Bob, on tour to Calgary, Toronto, Montreal, and Kelowna, alongside Out of Control: The Concrete Art of Skateboarding, featuring nineteen contemporary artists, are excellent examples of the Audain Art Museum’s wide-ranging in-house productions. The After School Art program, BC Family Day celebrations, and Alta + Audain: Fine Dining Art Experience also represent a brilliant sampling of what the Audain Art Museum continues to offer to our many publics.

Enjoy this night of cultural celebration and generosity!

AUDAIN ART MUSEUM 9 FROM THE DIRECTOR & CHAIR OF THE BOARD

On behalf of Nicola Wealth, I’m pleased to welcome you to the 2023 Illuminate Gala & Auction.

Tonight, we are brought together by our common admiration and support for the Audain Art Museum. The arts are an essential component of a healthy community.

Every day, we are reminded that issues of diversity remain prevalent in our communities and society, and now, more than ever, how important the arts and creative expression play in addressing those issues.

The arts enrich our lives by providing a medium to share one’s culture and values. Through art, individuals are provided a bridge to their own ethos and an introduction to those of others; the result is a cultural connection, understanding, and appreciation for perspectives from around the world.

The Audain Art Museum plays a critical role in fostering a vibrant and cohesive community.

The efforts of this organization to bring the arts to our community cannot be realized without support. This work depends on funding, resources, and a supportive audience to survive.

We see the value in investing in the arts and in the future of our community. That is why Nicola Wealth is proud to, once again, present the Audain Art Museum’s Illuminate Gala. We join you tonight in raising the crucial funds that help bring world-class art to our community and support the artists who create it.

So, as you enjoy your evening, I encourage you to think about the impact that your support has on the arts and our community. Join us in supporting the Audain Art Museum and its mission to ensure the arts continue to thrive and inspire us for generations to come.

LEVI NELSON

Levi Nelson is an artist from the Lil’wat Nation in Mount Currie, British Columbia. He recently received his undergraduate degree from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver, with a focus on the Visual Arts. He was selected to partake in the Audain Art Museum’s Emerging Artist Program presented by RBC in 2019. Nelson has received the John C. Kerr Chancellor Emeritus Award for Excellence in Visual Arts (2021) and the IDEA Art Award (2018). His work is held in the Audain Art Museum Collection and the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation Art Collection. Nelson now resides in New York City where he is working towards his Masters of Fine Arts at Columbia University’s School of the Arts.

Nelson’s work can best be described as contemporary First Nations art, in which he fuses elements and ideas concerning Indigeneity with pop culture imagery through the traditional Western practice of oil painting, in addition to mixed media; integrating silkscreen, paint, and collage on canvas. Nelson’s Sliced series marks a turn toward a focus on shape and colour. His composition is broken into several fragments running vertically across the canvas. Each uneven stripe feels like a piece of a larger composition that has been torn away and combined to create this larger work. The viewer can identify various forms, such as eyes, that have been ‘sliced’ in order to create this energetic combination of shape and colour. The white stripe still present acts as a split in the composition and serves to emphasize the vibrancy of the surrounding hues.

LANDON MACKENZIE

Landon Mackenzie is a nationally recognized artist, admired for her large-scale paintings and works on paper. Mackenzie grew up in Toronto, where she was exposed to impressive collections of non-representational paintings which came to influence the large, vibrant, abstracted paintings she has become known for. Trained in Halifax and Montreal, she had a key role in teaching painting for three decades at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Her work is held in cultural institutions such as the National Gallery of Canada, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the Audain Art Museum. Mackenzie has received several awards for her contribution to the visual arts, including the Governor General’s Award for Visual and Media Arts (2017). Landon Mackenzie is represented by Nicholas Metivier Gallery in Toronto.

Mackenzie’s works represent psychological and physical experiences through a vortex of spots, lines, nets, bubbles, and dots, making use of various combinations, layers, and patterns to represent the world. This work revisits an earlier series she made called Neurotransmitter, but here Mackenzie playfully engages the idea of a cross between a ski trail map and a subway diagram. Calling it Mappe Monde (Synapses), it refers to early maps that depict double hemispheres. The composition which shows a tangle of interconnected lines and dots can resemble neurons and allude to the parenthetical ‘Synapses’ in the title. They radiate out from the two centres in the canvas, creating a sense of movement and frenetic energy.

Russna Kaur was born in Toronto and currently lives and works in Vancouver on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. Kaur completed a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Waterloo in 2013 and a Master of Fine Arts at Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2019. Her work is held in numerous collections including the Audain Art Museum, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Surrey Art Gallery, and the Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art. Kaur is the recipient of the Takao Tanabe Painting Prize (2020) and the IDEA Art Award (2020). She was awarded the Gathie Falk Visual Arts Scholarship (2019), the University Women’s Club of Vancouver Graduate Scholarship (2017), and an Audain Faculty of Art Graduate Teaching Fellowship (2018).

Kaur’s large-scale and multi-surface paintings are developed through explorations of colour, text, digital sketches, and mixed media. Her paintings are often made up of several modular fragments, a choice that Kaur believes reflects her varied life experiences. Painting allows Kaur to piece all of these experiences together. The lines laid on top of her composition represent the common thread that weaves together all of life’s distinct moments. In After it is no longer visible in the sky, Kaur lays thickly painted lines of varying width atop a magenta background to create a piece that can take different forms depending on how its separate components are assembled.

JOE FAFARD

Joe Fafard, born in 1942, lived most of his life in small rural communities in Saskatchewan. He attended the University of Manitoba and Pennsylvania State University, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts, respectively. Fafard was widely recognized as being at the forefront of his practice, and his contributions to the arts have significantly raised the profile of Saskatchewan on the national stage. His work is held in numerous collections including the National Gallery of Canada, the Glenbow Museum, and the Mackenzie Art Gallery. Fafard was named an Officer of the Order of Canada (1981), was awarded the Architectural Institute of Canada Allied Arts Award (1987), received the Saskatchewan Order of Merit (2002), and earned the Saskatchewan Arts Board Lifetime Achievement Award (2007).

In the mid 1980s, Fafard shifted to bronze as his primary sculptural medium. Fafard’s work in bronze became his trademark and is displayed across Canada. Fafard imbued a sense of playfulness in his depictions of the everyday. His insight and humour characterized his portraits of neighbours, farm animals, wildlife, and famous artists that he came to respect. This piece, Jimenez, is a horse in mid-gallop. The horse balances his hind legs on a small rock slab while his front legs are lifted up. This, coupled with the movement in his mane and tail, prompt the viewer to envision an imagined backdrop of wide-open plains.

Lacey Jane Wilburn is a contemporary artist most notable for her work as a muralist and oil painter. Wilburn studied Fine Art at MacEwan University in Edmonton and then graduated from Montreal’s Concordia University in 2016. She has received several awards and scholarships including the Yves Gaucher Prize in Studio Arts (2016), the D.L. Stevenson Colour Scholarship for Academic Excellence (2014), and the Francis Henderson Klingle Scholarship for Fine Art (2009). Wilburn currently resides in Vancouver on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations and is completing a Master of Fine Arts at Emily Carr University of Art + Design.

Wilburn specializes in narrative portraiture, creating “intimate glimpses into moments of sincerity in everyday life.” Her piece, Sleepless, is a living room scene washed in a teal blue light. An overstuffed armchair is the focal point of the composition, placed directly in the centre of the room and between two windows which provide columns of bright light that beam into the space. The glass table in the foreground reflects this light beautifully, and splashes of red throughout the composition move the viewer’s eye around the room. This is a scene many of us are familiar with. A dark room you wander into when you cannot sleep, illuminated only by the lights outside. Through her use of colour and composition, Wilburn creates a stillness and silence that encapsulates those sleepless nights.

ANDREW DADSON

Andrew Dadson is a multidisciplinary artist who works in a variety of media including painting, photography, and installation. Central to Dadson’s work is, as he describes, a “deep interest in the social contracts shaping the natural environment, from which he creates artworks that investigate and reflect on the landscape and highlight a constantly changing environment.” His practice focuses on questioning where boundaries begin and end. Dadson lives and works in Vancouver on the unceded territories of the Squamish, Musqueam, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. His work is held in such notable institutions as the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Audain Art Museum. He is represented by Daniel Faria Gallery, Toronto, Nino Mier Gallery, Los Angeles, and Galleria Franco Noero, Torino. Recently, Dadson’s work was included in Out of Control: The Concrete Art of Skateboarding at the Audain Art Museum.

Dadson’s practice is characterized by his thick handling of paint, as seen in Paint Crest (White). He often begins with undercoats of bright colours, and topcoats of black or white. These layers are scraped, pushed, and dragged, then piled on again. In this series, he scrapes layers of paint toward each of the four edges of a stretched canvas, such that the excess paint forms a ridge in relief. This technique creates the effect of the canvas being ripped back to reveal a bright white undercoat, with the bold painted hues being relegated to the borders of the composition.

DANA CLAXTON

Dana Claxton is an internationally recognized artist whose work in photography, film, video, and performance art explores social and political issues, as well as spiritual and cultural life. Her work is held in public and private collections, including the Vancouver Art Gallery, the National Gallery of Canada, the Seattle Art Museum, and the Audain Art Museum. She resides in Vancouver on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, and is a member of the Wood Mountain Lakota First Nation located in Southwest Saskatchewan. Claxton has received numerous awards, including the VIVA Award (2001), the YWCA Women of Distinction Award (2019), the Scotiabank Photography Award (2020), and the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts (2020).

Claxton’s photographs often juxtapose Indigenous traditions and contemporary Western imagery to reflect on the legacy of colonialism. Study for a Protest 2 features two female figures who were part of Re/Matriate, a collective dedicated to the positive representation of Indigenous women in media. This pose, in which the two women are walking together, was inserted into another work by Claxton, Muckamuck Strike Then and Now (2018), which speaks to the 1978 Union protest against Muckamuck Restaurant. By hand-colouring the ribbons in the skirt and the beaded art on the necklace, Claxton emphasizes the placement of these contemporary figures into a moment in history. In doing so, she forms a trans-generational link between Indigenous women of the past and present.

Ian Wallace is a British-born artist currently living and working in Vancouver on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. A pioneering figure of photo-conceptualism, Wallace is best known for his works that combine photography and painting, a technique he has explored for the past three decades. In 2004, Wallace received a Governor General’s Award and was named an Officer of the Order of Canada (2012). Wallace was also the most recent recipient of the Audain Prize for Lifetime Achievement in the Visual Arts (2022) for his contribution to visual arts in Canada.

This is a single canvas work from an early series entitled In the Museum (The Peter Halley Series), which shows partial views of an installation of works by the New York painter Peter Halley. As is the case for most of Wallace’s works, it consists of a photographic image laminated onto the center of gessoed canvas bordered on either side by acrylic paint. The photographic image shows an installation of a couple of abstract paintings by Peter Halley on a museum wall. Only a partial view of the paintings is revealed. With the photographic image in the centre, a narrow border of deep grey acrylic paint is on the left and a slightly wider border of white acrylic paint is on the right. Impressed by the work of Peter Halley, Wallace wanted to reference it without appropriating Halley’s work. Wallace focused his view on the wall space between the works, so that only the lateral edges of his adjacent works are visible. This oblique reference to well-known works by other artists characterizes Wallace’s strategy for the Museum Series

Danny Singer is a Vancouver-based photographer residing on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. He is largely influenced by traditional documentary photography, but uses contemporary techniques to record small towns in Canada’s western Prairie provinces and the American Midwest. His photographs are presented as panoramas which are often composed of up to one hundred forty conjoined sequential images. Singer’s work can be found in public collections including the National Gallery of Canada, the Vancouver Art Gallery, and the Glenbow Museum.

In Singer’s photographs, each structure on the street is photographed to appear directly in front of the viewer, creating an unusual perspective with multiple vanishing points. Each piece is an accurate representation of the entire main street, including the scale of the architecture. The large size of this finished print allows viewers to immerse themselves in the fine details. Through his work, Singer encourages viewers to question physical relationships between diverse structures and the spaces between them, as well as between the town and the land it rests on. Singer’s works are celebratory expressions of Western culture. This piece, Kincaid, depicts the main street of Kincaid, Saskatchewan on a summer day. The blue of the sky is mimicked in the light blue of several of the buildings on the main street, creating a sense of quiet monotony synonymous with small towns on the Canadian Prairies.

ALLAN SWITZER

Allan Switzer is a multi-disciplinary Calgary-born artist whose work explores the concepts he studied as a Philosophy student at York University. Additionally, Switzer received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University of Art + Design and earned a Master of Fine Arts from Concordia University, Montreal. The use of text within his work continues to appear in various forms as an exploration of visual language. Switzer’s work has been exhibited across Canada at Monte Clark Gallery, Espace 502, Paul Kuhn Fine Arts, and Mónica Reyes Gallery. He is currently represented by Mónica Reyes Gallery in Vancouver.

Switzer’s Omen is a 24 karat gold-plated piece that reads, “Sinister Hunch of an Indeterminate Nature.” He has been working with gold since the early 2000s. This large scale work by Switzer is a continuation of his practice in text-based work that alludes to the dripping fonts used in horror movie poster advertisements of the 1970s and 80s. The text font was created specifically for this body of work and is now known as the “schlop” font. This is one in a series of cryptic phrases that Switzer presents in the form of wall sculpture.

LYLE XOX

Lyle XOX’s arresting photographs span a broad range of salient subject matter, from the serious to the satisfyingly frivolous, with several stops along the way. Given the prevalence of the “mask” in his photographs, the existential inquiry into the nature of the self is a strong undercurrent throughout Lyle’s practice.

Working with the fact that guise is a given in this image-saturated age in which we are all curating our own identity, Lyle embraces representations of the self through storytelling. His characters, all of whom are self-portraits, form a troupe of players that are icons and iconoclasts, mythical figures and other worldly creatures, caricatures, and originals. His incorporation of a variety of forms of expression contributes to the dissolution of expectations around gender, class, time, and place. All of the elements used to adorn the subject are the detritus of the modern world which create beautiful, expressive photographs that ask thoughtful questions about how we define ourselves in a sea of images and excess.

Lyle XOX has been featured in numerous international publications, including ArtNet, Vogue Italia, Surface, V, New York Times, L’Officiel, DAZED, Montecristo, and many others. In 2019, he released a book, published by Rizzoli in New York, titled Lyle XOX: Head of Design. He has given artist talks in New York, Paris, Tokyo, Mexico City, Taiwan, and Amsterdam. In addition, Lyle XOX collaborated with renowned musician and performer FKA Twigs, created a campaign for the prestigious South Korean eyewear brand, Gentle Monster, and completed commissions for luxury brands Comme Des Garçons and Maison Margiela. Lyle is represented by Gallery Jones in Vancouver.

DEMPSEY BOB

Dempsey Bob is a Northwest Coast woodcarver and sculptor from Terrace, British Columbia. He is of Tahltan and Tlingit ancestry and is of the Wolf Clan. Bob began carving in 1969, studying under Haida carver Freda Diesing. He eventually helped found the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Arts in honour of his mentor and to guide the next generation of Indigenous artists. His work is held in esteemed institutions, including the National Gallery of Canada, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, the Royal British Columbia Museum, and the Audain Art Museum. His work is carried by Equinox Gallery in Vancouver. He has received several awards, including an Aboriginal Art Lifetime Achievement Award (2007), the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts (2021), and was named an Officer of the Order of Canada (2013). Currently, Wolves: The Art of Dempsey Bob, organized by the Audain Art Museum and McMichael Canadian Art Collection, is on tour across Canada.

Bob works primarily in wood to create bowls, masks, totem poles, and other works, mostly in the Tlingit style. Eagle Human Spoon is carved out of alder wood and depicts an eagle resting on top of two human faces whose body creates the handle of a deep spoon. The eagle is known by his long beak which curves downwards towards the bridge of the human’s nose. The human faces feature Bob’s signature wide mouths and slanted, drooping eyes. This piece is an example of Bob’s progression from traditional masks to his experimentation with nontraditional forms and functions. His mastery of the medium is evident in the smooth lines and delicate curves of this piece.

MARIE KHOURI

Marie Khouri, who was born in Egypt and raised in Lebanon, creates work that is rooted in a sense of dislocation and the search for a sense of place. As an immigrant who has spent time in Europe, the Middle East, and Canada, Khouri’s work speaks to a diverse audience. Khouri completed her sculpture training at l’École du Louvre in Paris. In the last 15 years, Khouri has exhibited extensively in Europe and North America. She has over 25 public artworks in Canada and abroad, and was awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre National Du Mérite (2021).

This piece, titled Unfold, is a multimedia work in which bright red mesh wiring is affixed to a painted black canvas. The work is derived from a public art sculpture the artist completed for Polygon Homes in 2020, titled Unfold. While visiting the site, Khouri noticed many children’s toys in the balconies of their homes. She intended for the abstract red mesh flowers in her work to relate to this atmosphere of playfulness. Having discovered this new medium, Khouri began experimenting and completed a body of work with this red mesh, which is in fact recycled mesh that she has collected along with discarded wire and barbed wire.

KARIN BUBAŠ

Karin Bubaš, born in 1976 in North Vancouver, lives and works in Vancouver on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. She studied at Emily Carr University of Art + Design and graduated in 1998. Bubaš has exhibited nationally and internationally, most notably in Paris, Brussels, and Washington D.C. Known for her photographs, collages, and drawings, Bubaš explores the construction of gender in both fashion and art. Her practice is a conceptual interrogation of media that sets up an intersection between photography, film, advertising, and high art. In this hybrid space, she often stages women and asks questions about their role in the history of representation. Bubaš is represented by Monte Clark Gallery in Vancouver. In the fall of 2023, Bubaš will have a solo exhibition at the Audain Art Museum.

Karin Bubaš’s Winter Scene at Alexander Falls explores the interpretation of landscape as sublime, yet frightening. The viewer, as well as the subject in the photo, is left vulnerable to nature’s power, represented here within the rapid movement of the waterfall and the unique zig-zagging pattern of the ice, water, and rocks. This photograph was taken at Alexander Falls, just south of Whistler, BC. The image largely plays on the contrast between light and dark. This contrast is compounded by the softness of the snow against the jagged hardness of the ice and rock. Nodding to the atmospheric vistas painted by J. M. W. Turner, such as The Falls of the Reichenbach, Winter Scene at Alexander Falls is also reminiscent of the photography of Ansel Adams, in which he references tourist attractions within a landscape.

HEILTSUK ARTIST

This pair of paddles dates to the latter part of the 19th century and offers excellent examples of Heiltsuk Nation art being produced at that time in Old Bella Bella. Each paddle has been carefully carved and features t-shape grips, beautifully tapered shafts, and thin blades that end in pointed tips. Such aesthetic qualities confirm that these two pieces are not utilitarian in nature and stem from more elaborate ceremonial type paddles often used by high ranking Indigenous officials.

The black and red painted areas on both sides of each paddle are identical and feature the head of a killer whale on the blade rendered in traditional Northwest Coast formline design, followed by a circular blow hole and a dorsal fin that extend from the throat along the shaft. Cross hatching and parallel lines complete the marine mammal design that reaches to the grip. Heiltsuk artists have been creating such magnificent graphic and sculpted works for thousands of years and other prominent ceremonial and trade items include ladles, bowls, bentwood chests, and seats. A number of highly respected artists emerged from the Old Bella Bella community in the late nineteenth century including: Chief Robert Bell (1859-1904), Enoch (d.1904), Captain Carpenter (1841-1931), General Dick (1822-1902), and Daniel Houstie (1880-1912).

During the latter part of the twentieth century, the Heiltsuk played a crucial role in the revival of ocean-going cedar canoes through their participation in water bound journeys to Expo 86 in Vancouver and the Paddle to Seattle in 1989. Currently, New Bella Bella or Waglisla has a population of 1,400 and is the largest community on the Central Coast of BC north of Queen Charlotte Strait.

SHAWN HUNT

Shawn Hunt is a Vancouver-based artist of Heiltsuk, French, and Scottish descent. He completed a diploma in studio art from Capilano College and received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia, majoring in sculpture and drawing. Hunt apprenticed with his father, Heiltsuk artist Bradley Hunt, from whom he learned wood and jewelry carving. Hunt also apprenticed with Coast Salish painter Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun from 2012 to 2015. Hunt creates abstract, surreal, and sculptural artwork based on Heiltsuk Cosmology that often references contemporary Indigenous life. Hunt combines his knowledge of traditional design and motifs to question issues of subversion, preconception, and fluid meanings. Hunt is represented by Equinox Gallery in Vancouver.

Shawn Hunt’s The Philosopher uses free floating elements of Northwest Coast formline design as well as characters from clan crests and Heiltsuk mythology to create a sculptural assemblage. He is influenced by Cubism and the work of Pablo Picasso, who in turn was influenced by Northwest Coast design. In The Philosopher, an eagle and raven make up the majority of the face, while the form of a frog creates the ear. Hunt uses bold colours, an off-centre composition, and a stark white background to pull focus towards the one central figure. Hunt pushes these elements together to create a portrait from the spirit world.

SHOORA MAJEDIAN

Shoora Majedian is a Vancouver-based artist originally from Tehran, Iran. In her works, Shoora examines “personal and social memories influenced by her childhood in Iran and her experiences pre- and post- migration.” She completed a Master of Fine Arts at Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2021. In 2022, she was the recipient of the prestigious Joe Plaskett Award for emerging Canadian painters. Her work has recently been shown at the Nicodim Gallery in Los Angeles.

The title of this piece, Two Suns in Veils, speaks to two women on the left side of the composition. They are dressed in burkas, a requirement of women in Iran. Meanwhile, the man in the foreground of the image glides through the water with no shirt on, unencumbered by the swathes of fabric that envelop the two women behind him. This piece highlights the difference between the male and female experience in a country controlled by religious leaders. The title alludes to the idea that the women are like the sun—bright, warm, extremely powerful—and yet they are shrouded while others are permitted to roam confidently uncovered.

Doria Moodie is a Whistler-based artist with a keen interest in the bears of British Columbia. She is a strong advocate for BC bears (black bears, spirit bears, and grizzlies) and has spent many occasions observing them in the wild. She is best known for her large-scale, intimate portraits of these impressive animals in their natural habitats. Moodie is an Associate Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists (AFCA) and a founding member of Whistler Out-of-Bounds Artists, as well as the official artist and member of the board of the Grizzly Bear Foundation. Moodie’s intimate portraits are held in private collections around the world.

In this painting, two grizzlies take a stroll in a spring meadow. They both seem to be enjoying the warmth of spring and the insects buzzing in the air. One insect in particular, a dragonfly, takes center stage in the composition. Its presence alludes to a symbiosis between creatures in the wild. While the mama bear gazes up at the sky, seemingly sniffing the new scents in the air, the cub stares directly at the viewer, inviting us into his world. Moodie’s signature gentle eyes remind us that these are peaceful animals, simply enjoying a warm spring day. The cub’s back paw pokes up from the grass, reminding us that they are on the move.
