ALLAN SWITZER

Allan Switzer is a multi-disciplinary Calgary-born artist whose work explores the concepts he studied as a Philosophy student at York University. Additionally, Switzer received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University of Art + Design and earned a Master of Fine Arts from Concordia University, Montreal. The use of text within his work continues to appear in various forms as an exploration of visual language. Switzer’s work has been exhibited across Canada at Monte Clark Gallery, Espace 502, Paul Kuhn Fine Arts, and Mónica Reyes Gallery. He is currently represented by Mónica Reyes Gallery in Vancouver.

Switzer’s Omen is a 24 karat gold-plated piece that reads, “Sinister Hunch of an Indeterminate Nature.” He has been working with gold since the early 2000s. This large scale work by Switzer is a continuation of his practice in text-based work that alludes to the dripping fonts used in horror movie poster advertisements of the 1970s and 80s. The text font was created specifically for this body of work and is now known as the “schlop” font. This is one in a series of cryptic phrases that Switzer presents in the form of wall sculpture.
