F RO M T H E DI R E C T O R & C H AI R OF T H E BOAR D

On behalf of the Trustees, Staff and Members of the Audain Art Museum (AAM), we would like to issue a heartfelt welcome to the annual Illuminate Gala & Auction. The works of art in this catalogue are an integral part of the event and it gives us pleasure to present them for your consideration. Visual arts play an essential role in our quality of life and this institution is pleased to serve communities throughout the Sea to Sky Corridor. We are thankful to the Illuminate Co-Chairs Maggi Thornhill and Kevin Mazzone, who have elevated the level of excitement and engagement around this year’s event. The support of Presenting Sponsor Nicola Wealth is deeply appreciated, while the participation of Heffel Fine Art Auction House ensures a dynamic evening for all. At the core of this fundraiser are the contributions of artists and collectors for whom we want to express our sincere gratitude. Those individuals and businesses that have donated to the Online Auction are also key to such a fundraising effort. Additionally, a committed group of volunteers and staff ensures a wonderful experience for guests that is enhanced by a magnanimous group of supporting sponsors, in-kind donors and generous Live Auction bidders. Last year’s virtual Illuminate Gala & Auction proved to be the most successful fundraiser in the AAM’s six-year history, however we are confident that our return to an in-person event will surpass such a momentous achievement. The Museum is forging ahead with its vision to offer visitors a “transformative experience” in appreciating both historic and contemporary art. In November of 2021, the installation of James Hart’s The Three Watchmen along with Xwalacktun’s and Levi Nelson’s The Great Flood on Blackcomb Way in Whistler marked a brilliant addition to the Permanent Collection. Likewise, the institution’s reputation as a venue of international consequence was confirmed over the winter via the Special Exhibition Riopelle: The Call of Northern Landscapes and Indigenous Cultures organized by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The Audain Art Museum’s future is full of potential, and as we regain momentum in moving past the pandemic you can be part of this ongoing project for cultural betterment.

FRED HER ZOG

Canadian National Pier 1959, Archival pigment print Edition 14 of 20 40 x 30 in (101 x 76 cm) Framed Value $5,200 Donated by Equinox Gallery Lot #01

Fred Herzog, born in Germany in 1930, immigrated to Vancouver, BC in 1953, where he became known for his vibrant and colourful photographs of the city. They are complex, mysterious, and capture daily life as Herzog observed it. Focusing his camera on storefronts, neon signs, billboards, cafes, and crowds of people, he used the architecture of the street as a framework for human interaction. Throughout his career, he worked primarily with Kodachrome slide film. His use of colour was unusual in the 1950s and 1960s, when most fine art photographers were producing work almost exclusively in black and white. Herzog did not attain fame during his most productive years, but later his work was celebrated as a precursor to the colour photographers of the 1970s. He was featured in several exhibitions, including at the National Gallery of Canada and the Vancouver Art Gallery, and was the recipient of the Audain Prize (2014). This photograph is a view of the Canadian National Pier from 1959. A man in an overcoat is seen in the foreground walking toward the pier, with the snow-capped North Shore Mountains peeking up in the background of the image. This brightly coloured and layered view of the pier is a nod to Herzog’s early days in Vancouver as a seaman and captures a scene from a bygone era. 28

SCOT T SUEME Rose, Rose, Thorn, Bud 2021, Acrylic on wood 61 x 49 in (155.3 x 125 cm) Framed Value $8,000 Donated by the Artist Courtesy of Gallery Jones Lot #02

Scott Sueme is a Canadian artist raised in Vancouver, BC, on the unceded traditional territory of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. He has exhibited throughout Canada, as well as internationally, including New York, San Francisco, Miami and Cape Town. Sueme’s paintings are rooted in an exploration of materiality – principally, the quality and perception of colour. In his work, colour manifests as an abstraction of various elements of life, interacting to recall memories, capture the passage of time, or connect with the subconscious. Sueme’s hard-edge painting techniques create a subtlety of depth that reveals a new resonance to colour and an admission of the human hand. Through an intimacy of material interaction, his works act as small records of larger lived experiences and a conversational catalogue of human imprints. Rose, Rose, Thorn, Bud calls to practices of mindfulness. The title of this work is a conversational game, termed by Canadian author Neil Pasricha. “Rose” represents something in your day that was positive, “thorn” something challenging, and “bud” something to look forward to. Sueme uses this game as an exercise in his studio, with friends, or at home, as a way to reflect on what has happened during the day through a balanced approach. By committing to the game consistently, intention slowly shapes gratitude, and counters our tendencies to focus on the negative aspects of a day, and in time, a life. Audain Art Museum

ANGEL A GROSSMANN

Angela Grossmann is a Vancouver-based artist whose recent work embodies gender and body politics. While still a student at Emily Carr College of Art and Design in 1985, she was introduced as one of the Vancouver Art Gallery’s “Young Romantic” painters most likely to influence the course of painting in that decade. Since then, she has continued to be a force in the Canadian art world. Her work has been exhibited widely across Canada, the United States, and Europe. It is in numerous public and private collections, including the Audain Art Museum's Permanent Collection. Grossmann is a co-founder of the Portfolio Prize Foundation, an organization which financially supports emerging artists. Grossmann’s Athena is a slightly abstracted female figure viewed from behind. The image has an inherent romance demonstrated in the figure’s form, the gold color scheme, and its texture. Warmth emanates from the piece, drawing the viewer closer. Douglas Coupland describes Grossmann’s work as material about “people who have been forgotten but have been preserved somehow. She gives their lives an arc, a trajectory, a mobility, a meaning.”

Artist in his Studio 2008, Transmounted C-Print Edition 10 of 20 35 x 30 in (89.1 x 76 cm) Framed Value $12,000 Donated by Ken Stephens Lot #04

Rodney Graham was born in Abbotsford, BC in 1949. He graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1971 and lives and works in Vancouver. Graham is best known for his striking photographic conceptual work. He represented Canada at the 47th Venice Biennale, Italy (1997) and among awards he has received are the Gershon Iskowitz Prize, Toronto, Canada (2004), the Kurt-Schwitters-Preis, Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung, Germany (2006), and the Audain Prize for the Visual Arts (2011). Rodney Graham was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada (2016) for his contributions to Canadian contemporary art. In this photograph Graham sits in a chair staring directly at the viewer. He sports disheveled hair and is holding a wooden spoon and washboard. He sends the viewer a cheeky message, giving us “the finger” with his right hand. He has chosen an innocuous background in order to make the subject of the photograph even more prominent. Graham often acts as the protagonist in his photographs, where he captures scenes that transform mundane observations into deliberately posed vignettes. Audain Art Museum

JAMES RUDOLPH A beautiful hand carved and painted model totem pole with three figures that is attributed to the famed Tlingit artist James Rudolph of Juno, Alaska. Rudolph was a prolific carver over the course of his lifetime from 1858 to 1933, and much of his output featured such a synthesis of Northwest Coast monumental art.

Mosquito & Frog Model Pole c. 1910, Carved wood painted black and blue 16 1/2 x 4 in (42.1 x 10.1 cm) Value $8,500 Anonymous Donor Lot #05 32

This miniature pole features a mosquito rendered with an elongated proboscis and flat wings that are accented in black, red, and blue tones. The figure stands on a frog with tiny blue rings on its back and a curious countenance. Beneath the frog is a human head with elongated eyes and a broad mouth. Such a careful stacking of figures alongside the angular style carving are the most distinctive qualities of this historic piece. 2022 Illuminate Gala & Auction

DORIA MOODIE

Doria Moodie is a Whistler-based artist with a special interest in the bears of British Columbia. She is best known for her large-scale, intimate portraits of these impressive animals in their natural habitats, which she has studied through many visits around the province and personal encounters. Moodie is an associate member of the Federation of Canadian Artists (AFCA) and a founding member of Whistler Out-of-Bounds Artists. Moodie’s position as the official artist and a board member of the Grizzly Bear Foundation allows her to advocate for the protection of grizzlies in Western Canada. In this painting, a grizzly holding a salmon in his mouth is surfacing out of the water. The grizzly captures the viewer with a warm and docile gaze that provides a sharp contrast to the glint of claw that pokes out of the water, reminding the viewer of the power of the creature. The brightly coloured red and green salmon pops against the more muted tones in the rest of the piece. The painting was inspired by a photo taken by John E. Marriott, one of Canada’s best-known wildlife photographers and conservationists, and used with his permission.

JAMES HART

James Hart is one of the Northwest Coast’s most accomplished artists. He is an exceptional carver of sculptures and totem poles, as well as a skilled jeweller and printer. Hart comes from a long line of Haida chiefs who were also carvers, and has worked with renowned artists Robert Davidson and Bill Reid. His bronzes, such as The Audain Art Museum’s The Three Watchmen, recently installed along Blackcomb way, can be found in collections throughout the world. Hart was awarded the Order of British Columbia in 2003 and received a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2013. He is also the most recent recipient of the Audain Prize (2021). James Hart’s Shaman is based on an original cedar sculpture of a Shaman figure that stands at the front of Hart’s The Dance Screen (The Scream Too) (2018). The figure is meant to ensure the cyclical return of the salmon that surround the entire work. The Shaman figure is holding a rattle in his right hand, and has his left hand up in a “stop” motion, as a warning to viewers about the destruction of the salmon population in BC. This bronze is distinct in its jade patina and beautifully detailed curls on the back of the Shaman figure’s head, as well as the thin pattern on his headpiece. Shaman is captured in bronze, a material with which Hart is considered a leader among Haida artists. 34

Ovoid Felts 2021, Stitched felt 47 1/2 x 44 in (121 x 112 cm) Framed Value $10,000 Donated by the Artist Lot #08

CHARLENE VICKER S Charlene Vickers is an Anishinaabe artist based in Vancouver. She graduated from the Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design and received an MFA from Simon Fraser University. Her painting, sculpture, and performance works explore memory, healing, and embodied connections to ancestral lands. Charlene was the recipient of the VIVA Award (2018). In this piece, Vickers uses the traditional ovoid forms used in Northwest Coast art to create colourful felted animals on a stark, white background. In Ovoid Felts, she depicts an octopus, two whales, an owl, frog, tadpole, three eyes, and a bird. This piece is distinct in its bold stitching, bright colours, and playful tone. Her homemade and craft aesthetic is without pretention and infused with concepts of ‘embodied territory,’ the idea that wherever she goes, she carries with her a part of her history and where she is from. 36

X WAL ACK TUN

Sea to Sky Yo-Yo 2020, Acrylic paint on pine 67 1/2 x 26 x 6 in (171.2 x 65.5 x 15 cm) Value $6,000 Donated by the Artist Lot #09

Born in 1958 in the town of Squamish, Xwalacktun (Rick Harry) is of Squamish (Coast Salish) and Kwakwaka’wakw ancestry. He received his artistic training at Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design and Capilano University, and worked with sculptors Bill Koochin and Gerhard Class. While Xwalacktun was in art school, there was no First Nations training, and when he began to make work upon graduation, it was in a Northern rather than a Coast Salish style. Eventually he began to explore Coast Salish design for himself, a process he describes as “finding his own way and looking at designs, and looking at similarities, not just in Squamish or Coast Salish but in other art, to kind of piece things together.” He received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2013) and the Order of British Columbia (2012) for his many contributions to various communities. The overall shape of this free-standing pine sculpture is that of a killer whale’s dorsal fin. One side features a rendering of an eagle head carved in bas-relief with black acrylic paint delineating its beak and feathers, while the pupil of the eye is demarked with a metallic paint. Among the Squamish peoples, the eagle is symbolic of the local Sea to Sky environment, as well as being a sign of good luck. The other side of the sculpture features a supernatural being in the form of a thunderbird head that has a metallic iris, while the entire rendering is set off against a copper oxide-like background as a reference to wealth. This work was created by Xwalacktun at the Harmony Arts Festival in West Vancouver in 2021, and his signature in the form of an incised bear claw is located on the lower right part of the thunderbird image. for his innovative multimedia works, performance installations, photography, and public art projects. Much of his work has been influenced by the New York Pop Art scene of the 1960s and 1970s, particularly Andy Warhol’s creations. In his work, Wong explores themes of cultural and sexual identity, memory, death, and the consumption of contemporary media. For his significant contributions to video and visual arts, he received the Bell Canada Award in Video Art (1992), the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Art (2005), and the Audain Prize for the Visual Arts (2016). This piece, Eternity, is yellow neon mounted on a steel box painted in Pearl White automobile paint. The neon glass is bent into the shape of the Chinese character for ‘Eternity.’ Wong likes to think of neon as drawing with light, and is inspired by the animated neon signs that he grew up with in Vancouver’s Chinatown. He uses neon, a material typically used for advertisements and signage, to create works of art. 2022 Illuminate Gala & Auction

NUU - CHAH-NULTH ARTIST This fine double woven conical cedar bark hat of circa 19th century is a good example of an art making tradition on the Northwest Coast that dates back thousands of years. The inner red cedar bark is normally harvested in the spring and then dried over the course of a year. The bark is then cut into strips and thoroughly soaked in water. A number of different weaving techniques are used to form hats, baskets, vests, and rugs.

Basketry Hat c. 19th century Double woven painted with black, red, blue and green 6 3/4 x 13 in (15.9 x 33.2 cm) Value $15,000 Anonymous Donor Lot #11

Audain Art Museum

This particularly rare piece was created by an unknown Nuu-chah-nulth artist and has a tightly woven exterior conical shape reinforced by a separate interior cap so that the entire hat fits snugly on the wearer’s head. One side of the hat is adorned with hand-painted eyes and a nose in black, blue, and green. The other side depicts an entire face, most likely of a supernatural being, which is rendered in black, blue, red, and green. Its mask-like eyes, circular nostrils, and large teeth present an arresting countenance, while both faces are separated by red and black paw-like images rendered in a classic formline design method.

TONY SCHERMAN Tony Scherman was born in Toronto in 1950, but spent the majority of his childhood and young adult life in Europe before returning to Canada in 1976. Rather than engaging in the Pop Art and Conceptualism that was prevalent in the 1970s, Scherman chose to pursue image and figuration, working exclusively in the encaustic technique. Portraiture has become the primary subject matter in his paintings and works on paper. He has had more than one hundred solo exhibitions across Canada, the United States, and Europe. His work is represented in thirty public collections across Canada and internationally. In this piece, the lone figure is caught in a moment and portrayed against an abstract, textured surface, which allows the viewer to fill in the child’s story. The layered brush strokes and drips combined with the wax technique create a unique surface whose texture can only be truly appreciated up close. Scherman’s subjects are often in the process of emerging from borderless backgrounds, and this sense of emergence echoes the intention of the Artist, always on the verge of discovery as a painting builds. 40

REECE TERRIS Reece Terris is a Vancouver-based artist who is best known for his large-scale experiential installations. Terris has a history of major constructions, including a six-story apartment-like setting built for the Vancouver Art Gallery (2009). Terris graduated from Simon Fraser University (2006) and received a VIVA Award (2010). He has exhibited his work at public and artist-run galleries across Canada for over twenty years. Reece Terris’s Bridge depicts the framed arch sculpture connecting his house to his neighbour’s on McSpadden Avenue. The photograph captures the view of the bridge from an alley in East Vancouver and speaks to the social circumstances of the era. By walking across Terris’s Bridge, private spaces are exposed. “It tells you something about your neighbourhood,” Reece said. “You see that your neighbours essentially have the same things that you do though they all made their decisions separately.” A subtle critique of social and civic governing structures, the installation came to symbolize communication and connection. Desirée Patterson is a Vancouver-based photographer. Key themes in her work include sustainability, environmental issues, social justice, and humanity’s dystopic relationship with nature. Through visual art, the organization of public events, and by conducting community-engaged projects, Patterson feels that she can transcend societal barriers and incite change. Patterson has had seven solo exhibitions and has participated in forty-four group exhibitions between Canada and the United States. The Anomaly series fuses Patterson’s glacial photographs with dual layers of colour. The resulting hot and cold binary images highlight the fragility of these glaciers and foreshadow the impending climate crisis. The compositions are produced as asymmetric diptychs. The colour scheme references climate graphs that communicate climate recordings to represent global warming trends over time. IAN WALL ACE Ian Wallace is a British-born artist currently living and working in Vancouver, BC. A pioneering figure of photoconceptualism, Wallace is best known for his works that combine photography and painting, a technique he has explored for the past three decades. In 2004, Wallace received a Governor General’s Award and was named an Officer of the Order of Canada (2012). Since the early 1980s, Wallace’s work has referred to three primary “locations”—the studio, the museum, and the street—that give focus to the themes in his imagery. In these ongoing series of work, his use of photography has been instrumental in confronting the issue of representation and subject matter in relation to abstract and monochrome painting. In this example from the studio series, the photograph documents the actual production of the artwork itself, as a “work in progress”, and thus as a self-reflexive imaging that has been a central issue for the discourse of modernism in pictorial art.

Work in Progress (Table and Wall) 2013, Photolaminate with acrylic on canvas 48 x 36 in (121.9 x 91.4 cm) Value $45,000 Donated by the Artist Courtesy of Catriona Jeffries Gallery Lot #15 Audain Art Museum

JACK SHADBOLT

From the Entrance of the Vancouver School of Arts; (on verso) Abstract Composite 1946 & 1961, Watercolour on paper (on verso) acrylic on paper signed & dated 39 x 31 in (100 x 79 cm) Framed Value $7,000 Donated by Tom & Teresa Gautreau Lot #16 44

Jack Shadbolt was one of Canada’s most renowned painters and a pivotal figure of the Modernist movement in postwar British Columbia. Shadbolt became known for his concept of gestural abstraction. He was named Officer of the Order of Canada (1972) and Officer of the Order of British Columbia (1990). In 1987 he and his wife Doris Shadbolt established the Vancouver Institute for Visual Arts (VIVA) to support and recognize the achievement of artists in British Columbia. An intriguing double-sided work, Shadbolt’s From the Entrance of the Vancouver School of Arts; (on verso) Abstract Composite offers two completely distinct styles. One side of the piece is a muted watercolour of the Vancouver School of Arts, framed by an archway and seen from the top of a staircase. The other is an abstract whose bright yellow and black colours create bold contrast and are reminiscent of the style of Shadbolt’s quintessential butterflies. 2022 Illuminate Gala & Auction

TIM GARDNER Since the late 1990s, American-born Tim Gardner explored a North American middle-class world of masculinity through the mediums of watercolours, pastels, and oil paintings. Internationally recognized for his hyper-realistic paintings, Gardner often depicts his subjects engaged with natural and urban environments. He has exhibited his work internationally at such institutions as The National Gallery, London, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Kunsthalle Basel, and the Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver. His work is in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the National Gallery of Canada, among others. This watercolour presents a scene of road workers during the construction of Highway 1, which runs across BC. Road Workers near Invermere is quintessentially British Columbian, and captures an ordinary moment of an ordinary day for two co-workers. Gardner paints in a loose realism, using soft colours to capture a hazy summer day.

Road Workers near Invermere 2010 Watercolour on paper signed & dated 22 x 25 1/2 in (55.9 x 64.8 cm) Framed Value $27,000 Donated by the Artist Courtesy of Monte Clark Gallery & 303 Gallery Lot #17
