Dubsky 5000
The oldest pattern of the Viennese Porcelain Manufactory Augarten still being painted is the so called pattern Dubsky. In 1724, the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory made the lavish porcelain furnishings for a palace in Brno which later came into possession of Count Dubsky. Today the famous “Dubsky chamber” can be visited in Vienna at the Museum of Applied Arts. The room’s interior furnishings consist of wall panelling and furniture, mirrors
and pictures, all richly decorated with little painted porcelain plagues, of scones and chandeliers in porcelain, a porcelain fireplace (put together from several large pieces) and a number of porcelain vessels (vases, glasses, cups, bowls, trays and plates). The painting which was restricted to the relatively limited color palette of the Du Paquier Period (1717 – 1744) includes “indianische” und “deutsche” (Indian and German) flowers (fireplace), birds, little Chinese figures and architectures. Chinese and birds also comprise the free standing figural decoration on the chandeliers. From the vast variety of porcelain in the Dubsky collection Augarten offers not less than six vases and further accessories.

Rich multicoloured decoration 5039
Dated 1720/25, this masterpiece shows a pot standing on three feet, with a delicately corrugated rim. Two carved handles and a slightly curved lid with a petite knob perfect this outstanding shape.
The brilliant painting is partly applied on the relief of the so called „indian“ blossoms and partly brings out the cartouche-shaped elements of the Old Viennese “Lattice and Strap Work”. The rim of the pot and lid are decorated in shades of ferrous red. Back then the Olliopot was used for serving a potage with a recipe coming from Spain (Oglio), which is prepared with various types of meat and vegetable. The shape of the lid is especially characteristic for the Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur Augarten at the times of Du Paquier.

Falconry
6143
Ena Rottenberg is a renowned designer and was student of Prof. Michael Powolny, an Austrian pioneer of modern ceramics at the beginning of the 20st century. Emma Helena (Ena) Rottenberg studied at the Vocational School of Arts, Vienna from 1916 to 1925. She worked for the Vienna porcelain manufactory Augarten and the “Wiener Werkstätte” amongst others and is a well-known designer with reference to sculptural works and pottery. With her medieval motive falconry and stag hunting, the famous Art Deco artist refers to the courtly life of the 12th and 13th century.
From all medieval kinds of hunting the falconry was the most noble, the „royal hunting“. People did not hunt for nourishment; falconry was the favourite kind of sports for the nobility. The impulse was to get the wild and uncontrollable loner used to humans and to submit him to human intention. Illusions of strength, beauty, nobility and freedom were linked, which made him one of the most important and manysided symbols of art and (mainly for the German) literature of the Middle Ages.

St. Florian 6299
Just before the end of the Du Paquier period (1718-1744), a pattern was developed which made use of strict, geometric ornamental painting, consisting mostly of lattices, bands and lines. This style was also called the “Old Viennese Lattice and Strap Work”. The ornamentation of this typical old Viennese pattern is richly adorned with gold and stylistic flowers fill in the free surfaces.
The pattern was first made for the St. Florian Monastery where the Austrian composer, Anton Bruckner, worked for a time, hence the name. “St. Florian” makes a particularly elegant effect on the baroque box 781 (created around 1740) and the candlestick 780.

Iris 6458
Floral motives are extremely important to porcelain painting. Following the example set by old masters of the Netherlands, a large number of enchanting floral motives were developed for porcelain. In addition to the rose and tulip, the iris was a popular theme for painters. Thus, the iris pattern which was created around 1930 follows a long history of development.
Pattern „Iris“ portrays the “iris germanica” which is often referred to as the “Schwertlilie” (sword lily) in German because of the shape of its leaves. A band of this beautiful flower’s blossoms and leaves stretches charmingly across the vase. Here and there are yellow butterflies hovering above the blue blossoms creates an enchanting contrast. The pattern is particularly effective on the floor vase 823 because of the way it combines naturalism with art nouveau styling.

6729K
The new series in neo-classical style comes in seven colours. The rich fond with repeated ornamental elements has its origins in the time around 1800. Under the leadership of Conrad Sörgel von Sorgenthal, the manufactory experienced a highpoint and became the model for all the manufactories of Europe.
The pattern is new and at the same time traditional – opulent and splendid and still in line with the international spirit of time. They are being introduced with the “Imperial Series”. Two varieties of the virtuosity displayed in the series are being offered; pattern 6729 is remarkable for its rare and carefully applied relief gilding.

Marie Antoinette
6743
The virtuosity of the neo-classical period at the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory Augarten remains unsurpassed. Originally, the neo-classical style took its inspiration from Greek and Roman antiquity. The appointment of Conrad Sörgel von Sorgenthal as the director in 1787 launched the heyday of the manufactory in Vienna.
The superb painters Sorgenthal hired were often masters in other areas as
well. Anton Kothgasser (1769 – 1851), for example was a well-known glass painter. Garlands of acanthus leaves, draperies and palmettes, straight or conical cups with angular handles and vases à la grecque, a rich kind of painting and a choice of special porcelain colours such as cobalt blue are characteristic for the period of neo-classicism. The ornate pattern “Marie Antoinette” shows an enchanting repetition of light and dark blue fields of colours arranged in a regular pattern on the porcelain surface. The rich gilt decoration alternates with painting in crimson. The charming pattern named for Empress Maria Theresia’s most famous daughter who made history for her sumptous lifestyle. “Marie Antoinette” goes back to an original from 1801 – the main artist involved in this creation was the famous painter Anton Kothgasser.

The “Courage” pattern shows a winged, griffin-like creature of fantasy with a horn in red on a black fond, flanked by gilt ornaments. This impressive example of the neo-classical period at the manufactory under Matthias Niedermayer (1805 – 1827) creates an exciting effect through its combination of design and colour. The original with the painter’s number 96 (Anton Kothgasser, 1769 – 1851) is in the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna.

From the Age of Enlightenment only few patterns were realized on porcelain world wide although there was an extensive development next to „Watteau“ painting. The romantic period itself not only leaves social, philosophical and scientific impulse, but also leaves an artistic impulse which was valid in the period of the late 18th century as enormous creative and important milestones. This pattern is very rare and known as one of the little authentic porcelain-pattern of this period. Until now it was not ever published and is interpreted new since the year 2001 up to the present.
Maybe it is one of the most important performances of the recent history of the „Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur Augarten“. Common with the relevant trend-research we are of the opinion that many meanings of the 18th century are reflecting in the 21st century. On shape “Habsburg” there are painted harbingers of the Classicism, tender elements of the Romantic period and a unique and winning combination of colours in strict contrast to luxurious formed gold-work. This work proves that the modern present offers enough space for clear and qualitative elements of the history.Consequently you can also set trends for the future with tradition.

Romantic Paintings
6766
The works of “Romantic Paintings” has shown here follow drafts that were painted at the Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur around 1790, at the beginning of its heyday. The works can be seen as a remarkable epitome of the time spanning from the late Enlightenment to Sturm und Drang (“Storm and Stress”) and to Romanticism. More than any period before this time changed the destiny of Europe with its dramatic effects on society, ethics and politics.
The timeless shape of the painted birds of paradise indicates the desire for the realms of fantasy, art and poetry. It is not a matter of pure chance that some people believe expressing these thoughts and concepts is also suited to the needs of the people in the 21st century.

Bay leaf 6770
In ancient times the indeciduous plant bay leaf was a symbol for peace following the victory over the enemy. Conquering commanders were crowned with bay leaves. This tradition relies on the clarifying force of bay leaf which was attributed the ancient Greeks. The Viennese porcelain manufactory follows this tradition and applies this deeply symbolic pattern mainly on trophies and prestigious porcelain shapes.
