church resources Advent & Christmas 2015
Planning Checklist for Advent and Christmas ❏ With Advent, the church begins a new lectionary year with year C, the year of Luke. Order worship planning resources and preaching commentaries to help leaders prepare well for the upcoming Sundays and seasons. Order calendars for altar guilds, worship committees, and worshipers to help them connect with the rhythms of the church’s year.
❏ There are a number of Sundays and occasions in the church year when a presentation of the Bible can occur in worship. Determine who from the congregation will lead the presentation, then choose and order from our selection of Bibles for all ages. A Bible with a member’s name imprinted makes the occasion even more memorable for a gift that lasts a lifetime.
❏ In honor of Veterans Day (U.S.) and Remembrance Day (Canada) November 11, consider including Affirmation of Baptism for Returning Veterans from Prayer Book for the Armed Services in worship on November 8, or any Sunday in November.
❏ Devotions and studies for individual or group use allow opportunities to open scripture, look at it through different lenses, and join conversations around the Bible.
❏ Order candles and greens for the Advent wreath. Perhaps more than one wreath will be desired for your congregation if Sunday school students and other groups gather for worship during the season in locations other than the sanctuary.
❏ If handheld candles are used for worship on Christmas Eve, determine how many candles and holders can be used from previous seasons, and how many new candles and holders will be needed.
❏ Publicize Christmas services, or other unique seasonal Advent and Christmas services (e.g., Lessons and Carols, The Great O Antiphons, Evening Prayer), in local newspapers and in other media.
❏ Design service folders for Christmas worship that guests will be able to follow easily, including specific instructions for communion distribution. Order seasonal bulletin covers if needed for services on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.
❏ Determine communion distribution procedure for services with large numbers of communicants, and make sure sufficient communion elements and communionware are available.
❏ Make arrangements for adequate seating, along with additional worship books and service folders for larger assemblies on Christmas Eve. If you hold a pre-service of Christmas carols, have enough copies of carol sheets in anticipation of a large assembly with worship guests.

ADVENT & CHRISTMAS 2015
Cathedral Candles Church Advent Wreath Candles One of the best-known customs for the season is the Advent wreath. The wreath and winter candle-lighting in the midst of growing darkness strengthen some of the Advent images found in the Bible. The unbroken circle of greens is clearly an image of everlasting life, a victory wreath, the crown of Christ, or the wheel of time itself. Christians use the wreath as a sign that Christ reaches into our time to lead us to the light of everlasting life. The four candles mark the progress of the four weeks of Advent and the growth of light. Cathedral’s Church Advent Wreath Candles fit standard 1½ sockets. Choose from multiple heights and five color combinations.

ADVENT & CHRISTMAS 2015
Sunday School The first Sunday of Advent (this year on November 29) is the New Year’s Day of the church year. Children need to be present for consecutive weeks to hear the Advent and Christmas stories unfolding. Advent is a time to prepare: to prepare for Christmas and to prepare for Jesus to come again. If you’re not already using Holy Moly, Connect, or Spark Rotation Sunday school curriculum by sparkhouse, consider trying one or more of these curricula at the start of a new church year.
Holy Moly captures the imagination of kids by bringing the Bible to life. Kids walk away from class excitedly retelling the stories they just learned and eagerly awaiting what’s next.
Holy Moly / Year 1 / Unit 2: Advent & Christmas Includes these four lessons: 1. The Annunciation: Luke 1:26-38 2. Mary and Elizabeth: Luke 1:39-56 3. Jesus Is Born: Luke 2:1-20 4. Augsburg Organ Library The Augsburg Organ Library is a multi-volume collection that reflects the twentieth century renewal of the organ and its music. The compositions included in this series come from a variety of cultural and religious traditions. Music from England, Belgium, France, Germany, Scandinavia, and North America forms the basis of the library. As such, the variety of notational traditions and organ nomenclature has been retained in order to reflect original sources and performance practices. The result is a rich compendium of organ music that serves as a basic performing library for church organists. A wide range of selections has been carefully chosen with special focus placed on the seasons of the church year, including Advent and Christmas. Music that primarily supports the song of the worshiping assembly is included; repertoire designed solely for concert or recital has been avoided. The majority of compositions are based on commonly used hymn tunes that are widely known in English-speaking countries. Paperback (12" x 9"). Prayer Book for the Armed Services The first of its kind since World War II, the Evangelical Lutheran Worship Prayer Book for the Armed Services was developed with the contributions and review of chaplains and other service members. This durable pocket-sized companion is ideal for those in the military, family and friends of those in active service, veterans, as well as pastors and congregations of those who serve. Features include:
Affirmation of Baptism for Returning Veterans Affirmation of Baptism may be used at many times in the life of a baptized Christian. Although commonly used as part of a process of formation in youth or adulthood, this particular order is intended for use in pastoral care with military personnel returning home from deployment as a sign of renewed participation in the life of their congregation. The scripture readings and prayers given for a variety of circumstances in other sections of this volume may be used within this order. This order may take place within Holy Communion or the Service of the Word, usually following the hymn of the day. Those making affirmation may gather with the ministers at the font at the conclusion of the hymn of the day. When this order is used independently of another service, it may begin with an invocation. All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.
In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. affirmation of baptism for returning veterans

Time after Epiphany
Psalm 29 The voice of God upon the water s On the Epiphany of Our Lord (January 6), the household joins the church throughout the world in celebrating the manifestation, the “epiphany,” of Christ to the world. The festival of Christmas is thus set within the context of outreach to the larger community; it possesses an outward movement. The festival of the Epiphany asks the Christian household: How might our faith in Christ the Light be shared with friends and family, with our neighbors, with the poor and needy in our land, with those who live in other nations?
Table Prayer for Epiphany and the Time af ter Epiphany ( Januar y 6 – Februar y 9) Generous God, you have made yourself known in Jesus, the light of the world. As this food and drink give us refreshment, so strengthen us by your Spirit, that as your baptized sons and daughters we may share your light with all the world. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name; worship the Lord in holy splendor. The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over mighty waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. (Ps. 29:1-4)

Bearing Fruit: Devotions for Lent 2016 by Anne Edison-Albright, David L. Miller, and Harvard Stephens Jr. NEW! This pocket-sized, full-color devotional takes you through Lent with daily readings from Colossians. Each reading is accompanied by a photo, quote, reflection, and prayer. Regular Paperback (4" x 51⁄2"), 96 pages. 978-1-5064-0061-7 $2 (1–99); $1.50 (100+) Large Print Edition 978-1-5064-0062-4 $5 eBook Edition 978-1-5064-0063-1 $2
March 14 Colossians 3:1 So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. To ponder Holiness is a concept that makes ordinary people nervous. Perhaps the uneasiness occurs because the word implies a certain level of impossibility. . . . The holiness that Jesus describes has less to do with pious character traits and more to do with the hosting of God’s abiding presence. It is not effort but invitation that opens the human spirit to the possibility that God may sojourn with us. —Barbara A. Holmes, Joy Unspeakable
Love is heaven’s glory on earth The mysteries of heaven are vast indeed, but our faith gives us confidence that because of Christ, the power of heaven is also here, in our hearts, in our homes, in our worship, and in our ministries. This is the great miracle of God’s amazing grace: the Holy Spirit abides in the hearts of people of faith. Instead of turning from God in fear and shame, we open our spirits to God’s mysterious presence. We connect with the things that are above in all the ways we serve others in Jesus’ name. All of God’s people discover how heaven’s glory is real and available to us through the love of Christ. Prayer Divine Savior, your love transcends the boundaries of heaven and earth. Wherever we find you, heaven’s glory appears. Wherever your word is preached, the earth rejoices. Wherever we find ourselves today, speak to our hearts, encourage our faith, and lift our spirits to the heavenly places where peace abounds and love never ends. Abide with us and bless us we pray. Amen.

Soli Deo Gloria: Choir Devotions for Year C by Wayne L. Wold Soli Deo Gloria is a collection of devotions for the choir, choir director, and music lovers. The collection features brief meditations based on the texts given in the Revised Common Lectionary, emphasizing the choir’s leadership role in worship. The ministry of choral music requires preparation of both heart and voice. These devotionals, used at either rehearsal or before worship, will provide a spiritual element much as vocal warm-ups provide the musical element. Also included with each devotional is a hymn text appropriate for the day and rehearsal planning pages. Spiral-bound. 978-0-8006-6389-6 $19.95

First Sunday of Advent Choir members are likely thinking, “How can it be Advent already? The time just flies! It seems like the last Advent-Christmas-Epiphany season ended just a few weeks ago!” The choir director is likely thinking, “If last Advent seems so recent to them, why don’t they seem to remember the music we are repeating from last year?” Choir members and choir director are all likely thinking, “Life will be a blur for the next few weeks.” To all of us, Jesus is saying, “Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down.” He does go on to specifically mention “dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life”—things we would do well to avoid at all times. But surely, we can easily become weighed down by an excess of good things, too—an excessive number of greetings to send and gifts to give, an excessive number of guests to entertain with an excessive amount of food. We may place too many expectations on others and on ourselves and even on the church to make our holiday season meaningful to us. Let’s not forget the central themes of Advent. Christ came at a specific time in history; Christ will come again in great glory at a time only God knows. In the meanwhile, Christ continues to come to us over and over in word and sacrament, in prayer and fellowship, and in deeds of love and mercy. It’s not all up to us—thank God! Being involved and effective without getting weighed down is our charge. After that, it’s all grace. By all means, this Advent season, don’t forget the grace!
Readings and Psalm Jeremiah 33:14-16 A righteous branch springs from David Psalm 25:1-10 To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. (Ps. 25:1) 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13 Strengthen hearts of holiness Luke 21:25-36 Watch for the coming of the Son of Man

Altar Guild and Sacristy Handbook, Fourth Revised Edition by S. Anita Stauffer S. Anita Stauffer’s original work for altar guilds has been a fixture in churches everywhere since the 1970s. This fourth, revised edition of her classic reflects recent developments in liturgical practice and gives attention to the Evangelical Lutheran Worship family of resources. FORTRESS THEOLOGY FOR THE PEOPLE
Theology for the People is just that: It’s theology, broadly conceived, and it’s for the people—that is, for everyone. We are bringing readers and writers together around the topics of God, truth, reality, ethics, and sacred text, and we catalyze conversations around ideas that matter.

Hoping Against Hope: Confessions of a Postmodern Pilgrim by John D. Caputo, foreword by Peter Rollins 978-1-4514-9915-5 $14.99, pb 224pp “There are no cheap promises in this book, no snake-oil sales pitches or prosperity prayers. To read this beautiful book is to enter the chapel of a religion without why. It is to join a chorus of praise to life in all its frailty and finitude, and it is to listen in on a sermon of worldly affirmation. The point of all this profane spirituality is not however to make us feel safe within the chapel walls, but rather to discover that there are no walls to this chapel.” —From the Foreword by Peter Rollins
Angry Like Jesus: Using His Example to Spark Your Moral Courage by Sarah Sumner, foreword by Halee Gray Scott 978-1-5064-0185-0 $16.99, pb 200pp The Gospels include at least fifteen different stories about Jesus’ anger. Jesus’ anger shows us what godly anger is. Although sinful anger cannot achieve the righteousness of God, godly anger can rouse a sleeping church. Godly anger stirs people to wake up and be truthful, so that many can be healed. Godly anger is the antidote to arrogance and addictions and senseless violence. It’s the cure for selfish fearfulness and complacency. It’s the spark for moral courage. It’s the match that lights new fire for renewal in the Church.

The Homebrewed Christianity Guide to Jesus: Lord, Liar, Lunatic . . . Or Awesome? by Tripp Fuller 978-1-4514-9957-5 $14.99, pb 176pp NEW! “If your Christology isn’t weird, you’re doing it wrong. The church’s theological confessions about Christ are not suddenly embarrassing; they always have been. Join the parade! It’s not like it takes a pluralistic culture informed by science to realize that identifying a dead homeless Jew as the Son of the living God is absurd. It is. Let’s own it. But instead of just regurgitating it without reflection and throwing it at our befuddled neighbors as a trilemma with eternal consequences, let’s let the weirdness seep into our own imaginations.” —Guide to Jesus, Chapter 1 44

Reformation resources for students of all ages Who was Martin Luther, and what role did he play in the formation of the Protestant Church? What was the road to the Reformation like? Whether you’re looking for an engaging introduction for young readers or seeking a comprehensive overview, Fortress publishes resources for a variety of readers.
When Lightning Struck! The Story of Martin Luther by Danika Cooley 978-1-5064-0583-4 $16.99, pb 264pp NEW! Martin Luther’s life was too exciting not to be written for teens and younger readers! In this fast-paced, action-packed novel of Martin Luther’s life, teen readers (and more than a few adults!) will be introduced to the life and adventures of Martin Luther. The book introduces readers to a kindred spirit who struggled with what God means for daily life. In crisp, enjoyable prose, author Danika Cooley conveys both the drama and the meaning of the reformation for younger readers like no one before her! Follow Danika Cooley on Twitter @DanikaCooley
"This is not just a story book. It is real life. It is accurately researched and meticulously footnoted. And it’s not just history, either. When Lightning Struck! introduces us to the truth of God by bringing us alongside a young man and his personal search for eternal life and peace. Danika Cooley introduces Martin Luther as an inquisitive and somewhat outspoken little boy. He had many questions for which his family and the church had answers, but throughout his life these answers never really seemed to satisfy. He searched and sought for the peace he longed for but over time doubted that it even existed. Not even the monks, the monasteries, or even the Holy City of Rome could give Martin the answers he sought. Eventually his questions started to change: ‘Can it truly be that the words of Christ rank above those of counsels and popes?’ When Martin searched for the truth of God in the word of God, he found the answer he had been looking for: ‘It is by grace I am saved through the faith that God gives!’” —Catherine MacKenzie, author of John Calvin—After Darkness Light and the Little Lights series

Atlas of the European Reformations by Tim Dowley 978-1-4514-9969-8 $24, pb 160pp NEW! A new, definitive atlas of the European Reformations has been needed for many years. Now, in anticipation of the upcoming Reformation anniversaries, Fortress Press is pleased to offer the Atlas of the European Reformations. Featuring more than sixty brand new maps, graphics, and timelines, the atlas is a necessary companion to any study of the Reformation era. Consciously written for students at any level, concise, helpful texts guide the experience and interpret the visuals. The volume is perfect for independent students, as well as those in structured courses.
Reformation
Part 2
I am bound by the Scriptures I have quoted and my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not recant anything, since it is neither safe nor right to go against conscience. May God help me. mARTin LuTHeR
The atlas is broken into four primary parts: 1. Before the Reformation 2. Reformation 3. Catholic Reform and Counter-Reformation 4. Early Modern Europe
"This atlas is a welcome addition for any church library. As congregations prepare to observe the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, this atlas is a wonderful place to begin. It sets the contextual stage for the events of the Reformation and takes the reader into the seventeenth century. The four major sections of this volume provide a framework for group study of this era. Additionally, congregations might choose to use this atlas as a way to tell the Reformation story over several weeks or months highlighting particular places, people, and events through the creation of their own maps and timelines. —Rev. Robert A. Franek, Faith Lutheran Church, Wataga, Illinois

Many of the churches in Asia Minor were founded by the apostle Paul, helped by Barnabas, Silas and Timothy and others. John’s letters to seven churches in Asia Minor are recorded in Revelation 2–3. By the end of the first century churches had sprung up through much of Asia Minor and elsewhere around the Mediterranean.
