church resources Lent & Easter 2016
Planning Checklist for Lent and Easter ❏ First communion, confirmation, baptism, welcoming children and adults as new members—there are a number of occasions in congregational life when a presentation of the Bible can occur in worship. Determine who from the congregation will lead the presentation, then choose and order from our selection of Bibles, gift editions of Evangelical Lutheran Worship and Luther’s Small Catechism, and Prayer Book for the Armed Services.
❏ In honor of National Day of Prayer, May 5, and Memorial Day (U.S.), May 30, consider including Affirmation of Baptism for Returning Veterans from Prayer Book for the Armed Services in worship on May 29 or any Sunday in May.
❏ Devotions and studies for individual or group use allow opportunities to open scripture, look at it through different lenses, and join conversations around the Bible.
❏ Order Lent and Easter church supplies, including paschal candles, ashes, palm branches, baptismal supplies, and first communion certificates. Prior to the Easter Vigil, place the paschal candle stand in the chancel for use throughout the fifty days of Easter.
❏ If handheld candles are used by the assembly for the Vigil of Easter, determine how many candles and holders can be re-used, and how many new candles and holders will be needed.
❏ Publicize Lenten services, as well as services for the Three Days and Easter, in local newspapers and in other media. Design service folders for these services that guests will be able to follow easily, including specific instructions for communion distribution. Order seasonal and children’s bulletins for these services.
❏ Determine how and where the procession with palms will take place on Passion Sunday. Prepare signs or recruit volunteers to help direct people. Determine how those with physical disabilities will participate in the procession or be seated ahead of time.
❏ Prepare printed materials for worship leaders for the Three Days. Lectionary for Worship, Year C, is now available for download on sundaysandseasons.com; consider placing all the texts and musical resources needed by worship leaders into three-ring binders (ceremonial binders in liturgical colors are available from Augsburg Fortress). Highlight speaking parts and instructions for each worship leader in individual copies.
❏ Make arrangements for adequate seating, along with additional worship books and service folders for larger assemblies on Easter. Order Evangelical Lutheran Worship seasonal liturgies for services that take place outside the usual worship space.
❏ If Pentecost is to be observed as a baptismal festival, see the suggestions for the Baptism of Our Lord in Sundays and Seasons, 2016. If a form of baptismal remembrance is used, evergreen branches for sprinkling may be desired. Consider the Child and Parent Baptismal Bundle as a congregational gift for the child and parent for celebrating the promises of baptism in daily living.

Augsburg Organ Library Augsburg Organ Library is a multi-volume collection that reflects the twentieth-century renewal of the organ and its music. The compositions included in this series come from a variety of cultural and religious traditions. Music from England, Belgium, France, Germany, Scandinavia, and North America forms the basis of the library. As such, the variety of notational traditions and organ nomenclature has been retained in order to reflect original sources and performance practices. The result is a rich compendium of organ music that serves as a basic performing library for church organists. A wide range of selections has been carefully chosen with special focus placed on the seasons of the church year, including Lent and Easter. Music that primarily supports the song of the worshiping assembly is included; repertoire designed solely for concert or recital has been avoided. The majority of compositions are based on commonly used hymn tunes that are widely known in English-speaking countries. Paperback (12" x 9").

Worship Matters invites you to grow into a richer understanding of the foundations and practices of Lutheran worship. With a focus on the principal weekly gathering around word and sacrament, Worship Matters explores the foundational questions about why we gather, how we encounter God in worship, and how that encounter shapes our response in both our communities and our world. Worship is central to the Christian life. The crucified and risen Christ is present at the center of the assembly gathered around the means of grace. Through the word proclaimed and sacraments celebrated, the Holy Spirit is at work. Lives are changed. Sins are forgiven. The alienated are reconciled. Strangers are welcomed. Unbelief gives way to faith. God is praised. Worship matters! —Mark S. Hanson, former presiding bishop, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

CHALLENGING, LIFELONG FAITH
Welcome to Colaborate: Lutheran Confirmation, the all-new Lutheran confirmation curriculum from sparkhouse! Colaborate: Lutheran Confirmation unpacks students’ assumptions, past knowledge, and even disinterest about the Bible, Lutheran history, and the Small Catechism to challenge, engage, and encourage them as they take this major step in the journey of faith. Colaborate DVD $29.99 (U.S.); $38.50 (Canada) These short videos use humor, exaggeration, and assumptions to tease out the problem statement of the lesson. They are intentionally a bit provocative (and age-appropriate!) in order to maximize the effects of problem-based learning. Colaborate Student Handbook $7.99 (U.S); $9.99 (Canada) Each of the four Colaborate units has its own handbook containing 15 lessons that guide students through a process of discovery. With intriguing questions, in-depth infographics, and punchy graphics, each page pulls students into the content to drive engagement with each other and God. Colaborate Leader Guide $29.99 (U.S.); $38.50 (Canada) The Leader Guide makes it easy for any leader--regardless of their theological training, regardless of how much lead time they have--to facilitate a class. We provide the Bible verses, the theological background, and lots of support to guide leaders as they work through each lesson. Colaborate Lutheran Student Bible $24.99 (U.S.); $31.99 (Canada) The Colaborate Lutheran Student Bible brings the story of God to life for teenagers. Featuring interactive graphics, interesting facts, and insightful commentary, this NRSV Bible is designed to bring the story of God to life for students. As an essential component of the Colaborate curriculum, the Bible adds value to your conversation with highlighted key verses, additional questions and activities. It’s smart, it’s fun, and it’s a Bible your students will hang on to for years to come. Quantity discount available. Colaborate Poster Pack $14.99 (U.S.); $18.99 (Canada) Set of four (Old Testament, New Testament, Lutheran History & Catechism, Lutheran Living) beautifully crafted, one-of-a-kind posters to hang on your wall to pique your students' interest and remind them of their fearless, faith-filled journey through Colaborate Lutheran Confirmation. Many of the churches in Asia Minor were founded by the apostle Paul, helped by Barnabas, Silas and Timothy and others. John’s letters to seven churches in Asia Minor are recorded in Revelation 2–3.
