AUTUMN
Every season has its special beauty and autumn is no exception. Watching the trees turn from a uniform green to all varieties of gold,
yellow
and
red
is
a
spectacular
experience. One can almost be blinded by the fiery brilliance. How can it be that all this beauty is sign of death and decay? With all this beauty there is a certain sadness in knowing that the changing colours foreshadow the arrival of a long cold winter.
About Autumn
Autumn is one of the four seasons. •
It is the transition from Summer into Winter.
• The weather also begins to get colder and many plants stop making food. Autumn is the time when deciduous trees shed their leaves. The leaves change from green to red, orange, yellow or brown before falling. After a while the leaves fall to the ground or are blown off the trees in the wind. They often make a carpet of leaves under the trees. • Many animals begin to prepare for the winter by storing food in their nests and dens or fat on their bodies. Birds like swallows and swifts fly away thousands of miles away to Africa as our winters in the United Kingdom are too cold for them. There aren't many insects for them to feed on in the cold weather of winter. They stay away until spring. • In Autumn, there is less sunlight because the days are shorter. • Pumpkins are a big crop during Autumn. They are used for pies, soups and Jack-o-Lanterns on Halloween. • Many animals begin to grow warmer coats to prepare for the cold weather following Autumn. • In the United States, autumn is a time when Thanksgiving and
Halloween are celebrated by many people. •
Many crops are harvested in Autumn.
When is Autumn?
In Europe the first day of autumn is on September 23. On this day the hours of daylight and hours of night are the same. As time goes on the hours of daylight get shorter and shorter until winter begins when you will see that it is dark by tea-time. The Autumnal Equinox signifies the start of Autumn, and it ends with the Winter Solstice (around December 21 in the Northern Hemisphere and June 21 in the Southern Hemisphere.)

AUTUMN’S TREE – group project (Romania, Bucharest)
A Poem For September Autumn "Now the summer is grown old the light long summer is grown old. Leaves change and the garden is gold with marigolds and zinnias tangled and bold blazing blazing orange and gold. The light long summer is grown old." Charlotte Zolotow
As the weather gets colder squirrels collect the acorns and nuts which they hide to eat in winter. They need to remember where they are hidden.
Farmers get their fields ready for next year's harvest. They plough their fields and set crops like wheat, which can be made into foods for us like bread or pasta.
At the end of autumn the trees can be bare of leaves and the weather can be frosty. Animals like bats, dormice and hedgehogs find a place to hibernate for the winter. If you have your own bonfire for Bonfire Night, ask an adult to check that no hedgehogs are sleeping in it before it is lit.
