Residents receive Diamond Jubilee medals 14 people honoured for service to community, country BY SIMON MARTIN
smartin@yrmg.com
With the London 2012 Olympics hovering in the not-so-distant future, 14 area residents got into the spirit, receiving medals. They weren’t gold, silver or bronze, but Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medals presented to the residents by Newmarket-Aurora MPP Frank Klees at Queen’s Park Thursday for their service to community and country. “What makes it extra special is through respect and history with the monarchy, (I was) reminded of my roots and heritage,” medal recipient and Aurora resident Steve Hinder said. “I thought about if my parents were still around, how proud they would have been.”

York Region has put a moratorium on applications from retailers wishing to open on statutory holidays. No exemption requests to the province’s Retail Business Holidays Act will be considered until April 2013 to allow Toronto’s public consultation process on holiday shopping regulations to play out. But some councillors are already forecasting the likelihood of more stores opening shop on holidays such as New Year’s, Family, Victoria, Canada, Labour, Thanksgiving and Christmas days, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. “If Toronto decides to open up, we will not handicap our stores,” Markham Regional Councillor Joe Li said. The issue, which regional council discussed in a closed session two weeks ago, followed the

He is also a former Aurora councillor. He said he was humbled to be considered in the same class as the other recipients. “It was pretty cool to hear stories of what others have contributed. I was in awe of some of the accomplishments,” he said. Newmarket resident Suzanne Bolton said she was “surprised and humbled” to find out she would receive a medal. “I knew many of the people and they all deserved the honour,” she said. REGION: Pair joins group initiating transportation talks
2 representatives named to transportation champions team BY L.H. TIFFANY HSIEH
thsieh@yrmg.com
Two representatives of York Region are among 27 leaders named regional transportation champions in Toronto Friday. Canadian Automobile Association South Central Ontario executive director Faye Lyons, whose office is based in Thornhill, and IBM Canada vice-president Graeme McKay, who works in Markham, will be part of a group to represent millions of people across the greater Toronto and Hamilton area.
Each will reach out to people in their area to get the conversation going about transportation funding, Ms Lyons said. Ms Lyons and Mr. McKay are the only members representing York Region to join the first wave of champions assembled by the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance, a coalition of senior and rising business, non-profit, government, academic and community leaders in the Golden Horseshoe area. Other champions announced include

Each will reach out to people in their area to get the conversation going about transportation funding, Ms Lyons said. “It’s about regional infrastructure ... It’s not a new subject,” she said. “You can live in York Region, but you might drive in to Hamilton every day. That’s how people travel.” CAA has participated in the discussion for quite some time and will reach out to its 1.8 million members in south-central Ontario, Ms Lyons said. “It’s part of an education process to inform our members, to educate them and get feedback from them about moving forward,” she said. The campaign will kick off in the fall and invite people to share why transportation is important to them and what they are willing to do about it. Everyone in the Golden Horseshoe area is invited to take part in the discussion. In the meantime, CivicAction is calling for other leaders to join the campaign when it launches.

NEWS: Newmarket mother upset at religious message spread at Canada Day event
Group defends action as freedom of speech ONLINE yorkregion.com
BY TERESA LATCHFORD
tlatchford@yrmg.com
Lynn Salmon wants towns to be a little more careful about who can present at public events. The Newmarket resident, along with her two children, Jasmine, 4, and Ben, 5, were enjoying the Canada Day celebration at Fairy Lake Park. Having enjoyed many of the activities vendors were offering, including a bouncy castle manned by volunteers from a local church, the family sat down to watch a magic and comedy show near the splash pad. “My son was so excited to volunteer and his hand shot up when the man doing comedy on stage asked for one to hand out Walmart gift cards,” she said. Although the stack of 50 or so cards her son was handed to pass out had the company’s name on the front, they actually weren’t from Walmart.

RELIGIOUS PROMOTIONS They were religious promotions with gospel tract on the reverse side. The message said all have sinned and will be found guilty on judgement day and God commands everyone to turn from sin or repent. Ms Salmon felt tricked and enraged a performance advertised as a magic and comedy show targeting children turned out to be an avenue for teaching gospel, she said. “Sin and hell are not something I have chosen to expose my children to,” she said. “Don’t sell me something as a magic show and deliver a sermon.”
OPTION TO CHOOSE While she doesn’t have a problem with organizations sharing a message at events, she wants the option of choosing whether or not to listen, especially when it comes to her children. When she returned home, she called the town to launch a complaint about the tactics used to get the gospel tract out. Local church-goer Bill Baker was one of the presenters on stage that day and insists he had the right to spread the message of God, as a gospel tract is straight

The town did not require the group to submit a script of the show, he said. “Freedom of speech is something that shouldn’t be banned,” he said. “We have just as much of a right as anyone else.” This is the first time the town has had to deal with such an issue, recreation and culture director Ian McDougall said. There are organizations, including many faith groups, that participate in events in town annually and there have been no complaints. “We were surprised and disappointed at what took place,” he said, noting there were a handful of complaints about the same show. He sent a letter of apology to Ms Salmon after receiving her concerns and said the town has taken pause to review its current procedure. The information provided to the town regarding the perfor-

While there were staff at the town booth and a few others tending to tasks throughout the day, the town may consider having more

staff dispersed throughout events to monitor shows, he said. The Town of Aurora finds its current policy of vetting applicants to present at town events effective, spokesperson Michael Kemp said. The town requires applicants to fully disclose their plans and enter into a memorandum of understanding to avoid potential risks, he said, adding the town has not had any issues. The City of Vaughan allows all non-profit groups to sponsor programs for events in exchange for tables and chairs to distribute their material, spokesperson Ted Hallas said. Some religious organizations that have taken part, but no complaints have been launched. The City of Markham was asked to weigh in on the issue, but spokesperson Dennis Flaherty replied the city wouldn’t be able to generate a response in time for print due to “other important business”.

No real estate bubble in GTA, agent says BY L.H. TIFFANY HSIEH

Housing prices may not drop any time soon, but you could have more choices if you are in the market to buy, according to industry experts. Prices are not declining, Unionville Royal LePage broker manager Karen Gerrard said. “We are still seeing multiple offers.” A survey released by Royal LePage Tuesday shows year-over-year prices rose for most housing types in Markham and Richmond Hill. In Markham, standard two-storey houses rose 11.7 per cent year-over-year to $575,000, while detached bungalows increased 11.1 per cent to $600,000. Condominiums appreciated 4.8 per cent to $325,000. Homes in Richmond Hill also made gains, with two-storey house prices growing 9.3 per cent to $655,000, detached bungalows increasing an average of 14.2 per cent to $605,000 and condominiums jumping 13.2 per cent to $300,000. In the last few months, housing inventory has increased in Richmond Hill, especially compared to the same time a year ago, the survey found. A slowdown about two weeks ago was normal for June and heading into the summer break, Ms Gerrard said, as people tend to be away. She said immigrants continue to play a big role in York Region’s housing boom. There is no real estate bubble in the GTA, she said. “We are still cheap compared to New York, London and Hong Kong,” Ms Gerrard said, adding low interest rates are likely to remain into 2014. “I’m not an economist, I’m a realtor, but the global economy is so fragile now, it’d be dangerous to raise it a lot,” she said. While house prices in York Region are

He said the market is starting to see a bit more supply and is expected to see more choices for buyers in the second half of this year and in 2013. “It’s not necessarily a buyer’s market, but it’s moving from a seller’s market to a more balanced market,” he said.

More detailed information on the provincial organ donation list is geared toward patients, not health-care professionals, according to the Trillium Gift of Life network. Before this week, people awaiting an organ transplant in Ontario were only able to see how many people across the province were waiting for the same organ and how many people were on the donor registry. But now, at the request of people on the waiting list and their families, the numbers are broken down not only by organ, but also by age, gender and blood type of the people on the waiting list. “Being on the waiting list is very difficult, especially waiting for that beeper to go off or for the phone to ring,” Trillium Gift of Life Network president and CEO Ronnie Gavsie said. “Sometimes, the more information (recipients) have, the more of a comfort it can be.” The intent is not to help people on the wait list determine their place in line, but to provide them with the information requested and break it down to convince more people to register to become donors. There are more additions to come in the next few months, including listing wait times by organ and the reasons people are removed from the list, once a standardized reporting system has been implemented.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Religious promotion should not be allowed Re: Religious handouts not welcome at event, letter to the editor by Lynn Salmon, July 5. Kudos to Ms Salmon for speaking out against the practice of purveying religious indoctrination, especially when conducted toward impressionable children. If there were any justice, those who pitched their beliefs would have been charged with false advertising, pay a fine and/or go to jail. If a con artist sold coloured water as a cure for cancer, he or she would be charged with false advertising. What if the person really believed the coloured water was a cure? Would he then be permitted to sell it? Of course not, because he can’t prove his claim. In Canada, to make money on an advertised claim, said claim must be substantiated by proof. Yet religious advocates are free to
advertise unproven claims about heaven and hell, supernatural entities and so on and collect money for their religious institutions doing it, unscathed. To say such claims are legitimate because of a holy book doesn’t hold water, as such texts are loaded with erroneous content. For example, Earth wasn’t created in six days. Indeed, history, science and the best philosophical arguments indicate there’s no such thing as a god. I could back this claim with pages of newsprint. The evidence is mountainous once one takes the time to look into it. Therefore, when religious institutions collect money based on promises of a magical afterlife, it’s clearly false advertising, which is against the law.

Lake research shutdown doesn’t make sense
W
e can’t live without clean water. Canada is blessed with an abundance of lakes and rivers and has a global responsibility to manage them well. But if we really want to protect freshwater supplies and the ecosystems they support, we must understand how human activity and natural disturbances affect them. The world-renowned Experimental Lakes Area in northwestern Ontario has served as an outdoor laboratory for this purpose since 1968. By manipulating and studying conditions in 58 small lakes and their watersheds, scientists there have made many discoveries about the effects of human and natural activity on freshwater ecosystems and fish. Over the past 45 years, they’ve taught us about the impacts of acid rain, mercury pollution, nanoparticles, nitrogen overload, climate change, fish farming and many other issues. That’s about to end. The federal government announced it will close the unique facility in 2013. It’s an odd decision, especially considering it costs just $2 million a year to operate — 1/10 the cost of Prime
David Suzuki Minister Stephen Harper’s security detail and about the same amount the government spent during the 2010 G20 Summit in Toronto to build a tourism pavilion with a fake lake. To make matters worse, it will cost taxpayers $50 million to shut down the ELA. In an open letter to government, senior scientists point out “research conducted at the ELA has been instrumental in the development of environmental policy and legislation both nationally and internationally.” They also note “ELA scientists have been recipients of numerous prestigious national and international awards and the scientific output from
ELA has been impressive — more than 1,000 scientific articles, graduate theses and books.” We often hear how Canada “manages” its natural resources, but how can it do that without sound knowledge about the intricacies of the water cycle? The timing is also odd. The ELA is being shut down as the government eviscerates laws and regulations designed to protect freshwater and marine habitat and resources with its omnibus budget bill. Included in the bill are changes or cuts to the fisheries, navigable waters protection, species at risk and Canadian environmental protection acts and a complete gutting and rewriting of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. Changes to the Fisheries Act are especially troubling. Habitat protection has been removed and the focus has shifted to economically viable and aboriginal fisheries only. One can’t help but notice that many recent cuts and changes are aimed at programs, laws or entities that might slow the push for rapid tar sands expansion and pipelines to the west
and south, along with the massive selloff of our resources and resource industry to Chinese state-owned companies, among others. Any research or findings that don’t fit with the government’s fossil fuelbased economic plans appear to be under attack. The National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy, for example, warned failing to address climate change would have both economic and environmental consequences. The government also axed that arm’s-length agency, under the guise of saving $5.5 million a year. Development is important, but when it’s focused on a single, polluting industry, at the expense of other economic priorities and the environment, it doesn’t make sense. When industry and government go to such extreme lengths to promote a short-sighted and narrow interest, it’s an affront to the democratic traditions Canadians of all political stripes have built over the years. Written with contributions from David Suzuki Foundation editorial and communications specialist Ian Hanington.

Habitat York Region has received a $5,000 grant to purchase equipment the organization hopes it will never have to use. The funds from the national 360 Built Smart Partnership will buy automated external defibrillators at build sites to ensure the safety of volunteers. An automated external defibrillator is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses potentially life-threatening heart arrhythmias in a patient. The battery-powered device is able to treat victims through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy that stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to re-establish an effective rhythm. The partnership, a collaboration between the Home Depot Canada Foundation, Holcim (Canada) Inc. and Habitat for Humanity Canada, is committing $550,000 to Habitat affiliates across Canada to develop the infrastructure that must be in place before volunteers get busy building affordable housing for hard-working, low-income families. The stories behind these grants show not only how the partnership is directly fuelling innovative housing projects, but also how important volunteers are to Habitat affiliates,
Habitat for Humanity Canada president and CEO Stewart Hardacre said. “The 360 Built Smart partnership helps us strengthen communities by building more homes,” he said. The grant program’s objectives are to foster strong community partnerships, attract and retain public and private partners and reach out to candidate families and provide them with the education they need to help them become successful homeowners. The partnership also wants to reach out to new volunteers and run successful programs to manage their work, provide access to home ownership while reducing environmental impact through green building and maintain the highest standards of safety on work sites. With more than four million Canadians living without adequate housing, Habitat for Humanity Canada’s mission is to build affordable housing and promote home ownership as a means of empowering families to break the cycle of poverty, Mr. Hardacre said. Over the past two years, the partnership has awarded more than $1 million to more than 50 Canadian Habitat affiliates. For information and a list of all grant recipients, visit habitat.ca/360

recent approval of Denison Centre’s request for exemption from the act. Owned by developer Rudy Bratty’s Neamsby Investments Inc., Denison Centre is within two kilometres of Markham’s Pacific Mall and Market Village, the latter of which Mr. Bratty also owns and has plans to demolish and turn into an 800,000-square-foot Chinese-themed mall. Both Pacific Mall and Market Village already open on statutory holidays. The Denison exemption sparked more interest in opening on holidays, Mr. Li and Vaughan Regional Councillor Deb Schulte said. Ms Schulte voted against Denison Centre’s application because of an Ontario Municipal Board ruling on Brampton’s Bramalea Centre that was pending at the time. After mall employees appealed Peel regional council’s decision, the OMB backed Bramalea’s bid to remain open on certain statutory holidays. York Region and other GTA municipalities are studying the Bramalea case carefully, regional solicitor Joy Hulton said, which basically advocates a mall is a tourist attraction. While the region typically receives one or two applications for exemption a year, Ms Hulton said there has been an increase

of applications from urban areas, such as Markham. Regional council wanted to hold off on the process of considering exemption applications twice a year, in September and April, until after Toronto’s consultation process is finished, she said. This will allow council to assess how Toronto’s decision might affect York Region businesses, Ms Hulton explained. Calling the act “outdated”, Mr. Li believes Toronto will ease its holiday shopping regulations.
“I have a feeling Toronto will open up,” he said. “Toronto is a major player. Whatever they decide can affect us.” Ms Schulte echoed those sentiments, pointing out York Region is a close neighbour to Toronto. “There is a lot of spillover between the two municipalities. We need to be consistent,” she said. While Newmarket Regional Councillor John Taylor also predicted more businesses in Toronto could be allowed to open on certain statutory holidays, he said he is leaning toward protecting and preserving “the handful of days for family time and slower pace of life”. Mr. Taylor, who is chairperson of the region’s planning and economic development committee, which has jurisdiction over this matter, criticized the act as not clearly defining tourist attraction areas. “It’s a mess. It has been for a long time,” he said. “It’s a process that’s very subjective and the province has no interest in intervening.” Mr. Taylor said he would like to see a level playing field for all businesses in York Region, but noted it might be too late to stop the momentum of holiday openings. “I’m going to bet Toronto will come out with a levelled position that can open a lot of businesses. It’s going to be hard for southern municipalities that border Toronto to not want to provide their businesses with the same.”

years and is heavily involved in the community. “I help people when they come into my life. I help them through difficult times,” she said. Ms Bolton works as a life coach outside of her duties with Mr. Klees. She had to drag her son, Michael, to the ceremony, but he ended up enjoying himself, she said. The Diamond Jubilee medals were created to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth ll’s ascension to the throne. They are awarded to recognize and celebrate significant achievements and extraordinary contributions Canadians have made for the benefit of their fellow citizens and their country.

Chevrolet Corvette roars into 60th year METROLAND MEDIA/WHEELSTALK.COM
On June 30, 1953, the first of a new kind of Chevrolet rolled off an assembly line in Flint, Mich. The car had only two seats. There were no roll-up windows, or exterior door handles, for that matter. Its body wasn’t stamped from steel but, rather, molded from reinforced fiberglass. While the postwar Baby Boom was in full swing, this was definitely not a family car. This was a very personal vehicle, one that promised a driver and a passenger all of the thrills of the open road. Skeptics gave the car little chance of lasting beyond an initial run of a few dozen units. However, 60 years later the Chevrolet Corvette survives – and thrives – as an American automotive and cultural icon. “Through the years, Corvette certainly offered state-of-the-art features, designs, technologies and performance,” said Tadge Juechter, vehicle
Servicing All Makes and Models
chief engineer for Corvette. “However, I think what has made the Corvette such an enduring concept is the exciting experience of driving one. Corvette was first created under the code-name XP-122 to provide North Americans with a glimpse of a European-style sports car designed for this side of the Atlantic. It was one of several concept cars unveiled in January, 1953 at the GM Motorama show in the ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. With a world war not far behind them, people wanting a glimpse of the automotive future lined up around the block to view the new concept vehicles. At the Waldorf Astoria – and at every other Motorama stop across the country - Chevrolet’s sporty little roadster ignited many Americans’ imaginations.

The Advocate The Banner The Era The Topic
One of the first of a revolutionary breed, the 1953 Chevrolet Corvette. In fact, the Corvette was so popular that Chevrolet executives decided to thrust the two-seat roadster into production, albeit on a very limited basis. Initial plans called for about 150 Corvettes, primarily to help draw potential customers into Chevrolet dealerships. Overwhelming demand doubled the first-year production to 300 units. The following year, the Corvette moved to a GM assembly facility in St.
Louis, Mo., where 3,640 Corvettes were built for the 1954 model year. Those first Corvettes sparked North Americans’ 60-year love affair with the Corvette. Since 1953, more than 1.5 million Corvettes have been built. Those cars have become synonymous with American performance – from cruising down Americana on Route 66 to taking the checkered flag at the world’s most prestigious road race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Sheila Reid to run in London Olympic Games BY JOHN CUDMORE
jcudmore@yrmg.com
Sheila Reid will run in the London Olympics, after all. The Newmarket resident is among five athletes Athletics Canada added to its 45-member roster being unveiled Thursday by the Canadian Olympic Committee, ending an appeal process that started shortly after she won the 5,000 metres at the Canadian track and field championships June 29 in Calgary. Despite winning the race, Reid had not achieved Athletics Canada standards during the extended qualifying period. That requirement included a national championship and two races completed within B standard times. Reid had one such race time to her credit for the 5,000 metres and two at 1,500 metres, arguably her best event. After her initial appeal for Rising Star consideration was denied that night by Athletics Canada, it went to a three-member independent panel and ultimately to the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada. She was resigned to the notion that her hopes for an Olympic debut would have to wait until at least 2016. “Once we heard back from the second appeal, I just wanted to put it to rest,” Reid said yesterday from Philadelphia, where she is a graduating student at Villanova University. “I didn’t know the decision was still being worked over. “There were definitely times I felt it was hard to keep fighting. It wasn’t that I didn’t deserve to go, but it would have been nicer if my legs did the talking for me. In the

end, it’s a relief I didn’t have to fight my way on to the team. “At first, I took it personally, but I don’t think it was meant that way and I’m glad they looked it over.” In a sport typically dominated by athletes from East African nations, Reid knows she faces a tough task starting with the preliminaries Aug. 7. The final is Aug. 10. “I don’t want to put myself in the category that I’m just happy to be there,” said the 22-year-old graduate of Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Newmarket. “I don’t want to go just for an experience, but to prove I am among the best athletes in this sport in the world. There are people there I know I can be competitive with. “The whole thing is a total trip. I’ve dreamed of this since watching my first Olympics in 1996. It’s the highest stage we can be on in our sport.” She credits the diligence of Athletics Toronto coach Hugh Cameron, Villanova head coach Gina Procaccio and her father, Tom, for pursuing the issue through the appeal process. “(Athletics Canada) were just doing their job,” said Cameron, who also coached Reid as a member of the Newmarket Huskies Track Club. “The onus was on us to convince them to change their
minds.” In the end, Athletics Canada dropped its opposition to Reid’s inclusion. “Rather than dispute the appeal, Athletics Canada agreed with us that Sheila had a pretty good case to be included,” Tom Reid said. “I think, in the end, they want her on the team.” Last night, Reid flew to Europe, where she will prepare for the 5,000-metre qualifying race with prep races in Belgium and Italy, before heading to Team Canada’s training base in Germany. “I was going to Europe for races anyway,” she said. “I just need a bigger suitcase.” In Europe, she’ll run in 1,500 races in Belgium and Italy to get in a bit of speed work prior to the preliminaries Aug. 7. Upon hearing Tuesday the appeal was taking a positive turn, she turned in her best 5,000 training session of the year to cement her inclusion on the team.
Sheila Reid competes in a race for Villanova University in Pennsylvania in this file photograph. Despite winning the 1,500-metre race in last month’s Canadian track and field championships (top left), she had to go through an appeals process to earn a berth on the track and field team that will compete in the Olympics in London this summer.

Newmarket Hurricanes forward Bowman Webster is the latest member of the 2011-12 team to head to the NCAA. The 19-year-old Aurora resident has accepted a financial package to attend Hobart College in Geneva, New York starting this fall. A three-year member of the Hurricanes, after being acquired from the Markham Waxers, Webster tied for the team lead in scoring with linemate Morgan Bonner with 64 points. The highlight of that total was a teamleading 45 assists. In 144 career regular-season games for Newmarket, Webster collected 149 points, including 104 assists. ANDERSON, Ellen Irene "Toots" (nee Adkins) (Selwood) "Foxy" It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother. Mom passed away peacefully surrounded by family, at Eastholme, Powassan on Saturday, July 7, 2012. She was born in Schenectady, New York on August 17, 1919. Predeceased by her loving husbands Arnold Selwood (1964) and Leslie John Anderson (2011) and her son Edward (Ted) Selwood (2008). Left to mourn are her sons Doug Selwood (Carol) of Powassan, David Selwood (Jill) of North Bay; her daughters Dianne Graham and Marlene Gaw of Willow Beach, Judy Newton (Keith) of North Bay; daughter-in-law Susan of Medicine Hat, Alberta; grandchildren Richard, Douglas, Susan, Steven, Stacey, Annette, Gerry, Paul, Becky, Brian, Anton, Adam, Corey, Matt, Mike, Missy and 19 greatgrandchildren. Our mom lived a full and rewarding life and was an inspiration to so many. We want to give a very special thank you to Eastholme for the professional but very compassionate care they gave our mom for the last six years. Friends and relatives will be received at the Paul Funeral Home, Powassan on Monday, July 16, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Legion Tribute Service will be held at 6:45 p.m. The funeral service will take place on Tuesday, July 17th at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Anglican Church, Powassan. Interment to follow at Powassan Union Cemetery. If desired, memorial donations to St. Mary's Church or the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated. For information, Memory Cards, condolences, donations or flowers, please contact the Paul Funeral Home, Powassan at 705-724-2024 or www.paulfuneralhome.ca In Memoriam

HERON, Robert James In loving memory of my brother Bob who left us suddenly 30 years ago on July 16, 1982. At the happiest level of my being You are still with me. We still look at each other at that level beyond sight We still talk and laugh with each other at a level beyond touch We share time together in a place where time stands still We are still together on a level called Love But I cry alone for you in a place called Reality. Missed beyond telling and forever loved, Brenda
