Woman shares her story of sexual assault

Sunday Reads

Steve Somerville/Metroland

LISA QUEEN lqueen@yrmg.com In the mental health system since she was seven years old, the young woman was comforted when a security guard at Southlake Regional Health Centre’s emergency department befriend-

ed her. Earlier that day, July 17, the then-19-year-old Newmarket woman drank bleach in an impulsive attempt to kill herself, part of a pattern of behaviour that has plagued her since she was repeatedly sexually assaulted as a child. A security guard was appointed

to ensure she didn’t further harm herself until she could be seen by a psychiatrist. "He was saying stuff like, ’You shouldn’t be dealing with this yourself. I’m here to talk to you.’ Just stuff like that. He said, ’Here’s my number, you can talk to me any time. We should meet up and get

some bubble tea and help you feel better,’" she said. "I thought he was super nice. Like, wow, someone actually cares." The following day, after she was discharged, he offered her a ride.

Aurora Microtel Inn and Suites to open doors in 2018 Hotel to feature 108 rooms, indoor pool, fitness centre TERESA LATCHFORD tlatchford@yrmg.com Aurora’s newest hotel is set to open within the next 12 months. Not even the rain could dampen the mood as builders, town representatives and the public gathered to break ground on Microtel Inn and Suites by Wyndham located at 180 Goulding Ave. This will be the first Microtel hotel in the Greater Toronto Area as the recognized American brand spreads across Canada. "We are extremely excited to be here," MasterBUILT Hotels president Eric Watson said. The hotel will feature 108 rooms and suites, some with full kitchens for extended stays, an indoor pool featuring a water slide, a fitness centre as well as meeting and function space. In 2015, Aurora town staff proposed town council examine

The hotel is expected to be up and running in the next 12 months. tives shortly after. "I looked at building a hotel in Aurora four years ago but I took one look at development costs and passed," Watson added. "But

its development charges and incentives in order to attract a hotel, Mayor Geoff Dawe explained. York Region eventually changed its formula and incen-

the changes made by Aurora and the region made me revisit the idea and here we are." A hotel brings a lot of opportunity to town, especially in the

business community, according to Aurora Chamber of Commerce’s George Hughes. Companies will be able to invite clients and business associates to town because they will have somewhere to stay, trade shows can be held in the program space, large meetings and training sessions can be accommodated in the meeting rooms, and sporting events will keep visiting players in town to stay, eat, shop and play. "We will make sure we program the hotel for the community’s needs," Watson said. "We know hotels are a gathering place for the community and a hub for economic activity." Dawe welcomes the jobs this project will create and looks forward to having the company as a community partner, something it is known for. This year alone the company has donated $150,000 to charities and encourages all employees to volunteer by giving them three paid days a year to do so. Watson confirmed the hotel should be open for business by the end of 2018.

Residents react to Saturday night shooting in ’calm’ neighbourhood. JEREMY GRIMALDI jgrimaldi@yrmg.com York Regional Police charged a Newmarket man with the murder of Georgina’s Cody Gionet. Gionet was found on Oct. 21 at 10 p.m. with gunshot wounds on Sheldon Avenue, in a neighbourhood northeast of Yonge Street and Davis Drive in Newmarket. Gionet died of his injuries in hospital. Another man was arrested on "unrelated charges", police said. Both men were arrested at a house near the scene, according to police. Robert Curtis, who identified himself as a friend of Gionet, told CTV News Toronto the victim was a nice guy. "Sometimes he had to go make some money the way he could, but to be honest, he was a really good guy," he said. Another man named Tyler Biladeau said he Gionet a "really nice guy" that "didn’t do anything wrong". Travis Whitman, 21, is charged with second-degree murder. Whitman appeared in bail court in Newmarket Oct. 23. Residents of the Newmarket neighbourhood were coming to grips with the fatal shooting on their street only hours earlier. "It’s so sad. I thought this was a great neighbourhood and all of a sudden we’re hearing shots," said Cecilia Ribadeneira, nodding toward the scene, as she left for church. A resident of her home only since August, Ribadeneira ventured upon the scene while returning from a night out at the movies. "I saw a body on the side-

"It happens everywhere so I’m not too concerned," said the woman, a resident in the area for about one year, while walking her dog and heading past the yellow police tape blocking off the section of Sheldon Avenue. "It could happen here or Vaughan. It’s one of those things and random. I’m not planning to move from here." It was the second incident of gunplay on the street this year. Another incident in January involved shots being fired at a house on Sheldon Avenue. Despite police saying Gionet was from Georgina, he appears to have spent much of his time in Newmarket. He not only went to Huron Heights High School, but also St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Elementary School. A number of friends paid tribute to him on Facebook, including one who’d mentioned he had plans to move to Newfoundland. Really sorry you won’t get to see life from the eyes as a Newfie," wrote the account named Dave Crocker, who referred to the Newfoundland tradition to kiss cod fish. "RIP brotha!". "RIP Cody Gionet taken way too soon bro," wrote the account named Terry Samuelsson. "Rest easy fam." A home on Sheldon Avenue was shot at in January according to York Regional Police. During that incident one man was injured after jumping out the window. Anyone with information is asked to call York Regional Police at 1-866-876-5423. - with files from John Cudmore

‘Stop acting bad, get some hobbies, go on Tinder’ l Continued from page 1

It was in the vehicle that the sexual assault occurred, she said. "My biggest fear was that he was going to lock the door and things were going to escalate. So I just, basically, I don’t want to say let it happen, but I just sat there. I kind of froze," she said. Police have charged Pabiram Ravichandran, 24, of Aurora, with two counts of sexual assault, one involving the woman and a second involving a 16-year-old girl. He will make his next court appearance Oct. 27. The alleged assault was one of many incidents in a lifelong struggle with mental health challenges for the woman, who is looking at a career in social work after she finishes getting her high school diploma. The former Richmond Hill resident entered the mental health system at age seven when she showed signs of hyperactivity, re-

petitive movement disorder and obsessive characteristics. Initially misdiagnosed, she was later determined to have autism spectrum disorder and complex posttraumatic stress disorder, as a result of being repeatedly sexually and physically assaulted at the age of five by a nine-year-old neighbourhood boy, while two older girls watched and mocked her. Intermittently, over a period of years, she has had contact with many mental health professionals and agencies. "The issue with these programs, they have a cookie-cutter approach. You can only stay in the program for a certain amount of time and once that time is over, they just discharge you. But everybody is not ready to be discharged at that time," she said, adding there are also often long waiting lists for programs. "I have been on waiting lists for so long that I have

She began going to Southlake as she experienced suicidal thoughts and attempted suicide several times. "I have severe impulse issues. I think and then I do and then I regret right after. out thing, like, ’I’m going to kill myself today.’ It’s always ’I’m upset, I’m frustrated, I don’t know what to do with my emotions right now,’" she said. "When I was 17, I hung myself in the closet and woke up (after being) unconscious on the ground because the bar snapped .... I’ve also overdosed on (psychiatric drug) lithium a couple of times." The woman said her treatment at Southlake has often been "not helpful," including enduring hearing dismissive comments from some staff such as, "She only comes here for the meds." A few weeks ago, as an in-patient, she said a nurse told her to "stop acting bad, get some hobbies and go on (dating and hook-up app) Tinder." "The get hobbies part I don’t mind, but stop acting bad? I’m not purposely trying to be bad and I don’t see me as a bad person. And go on Tinder? That’s a little random," she said.

The woman said she has been restrained twice while at Southlake, including one incident when she was "tackled" by security guards and injected with a sedative when she wouldn’t move away from a door on the mental health floor and staff feared she would flee. She said she has had some good experiences at Southlake, pointing to a caring doctor who treated her in the youth unit when she was younger. However, she wants to see Southlake provide more training to employees dealing with patients with mental health concerns and review its procedures for restraining and injecting patients with sedatives. Southlake provided a written statement in response to the woman’s concerns. "When people come to the hospital, we want them to feel heard and we want them to share their concerns with us, so that we can resolve any issues with

them as soon as possible. We would really encourage this young woman to come forward and contact York Regional Police to report this, so that she has a voice to tell her story" it said.

COMMUNITY

Students de-pave Holy Spirit yard TERESA LATCHFORD tlatchford@yrmg.com Holy Spirit Catholic Elementary School is going green. Students, parents, school staff and members of the community gathered at the local Aurora school located in Stone Road to participate in the de-paving event hosted by the Windfall Ecology Centre.

Participants removed hunks of concrete from the 130-square-metre kindergarten yard using pry bars and their own hands. "A project like this creates community spirit, involving, educating and engaging everyone involved," Windfall Ecology Centre’s Andrea Fallone said. "The pavement will be replaced with mulch, native plants and outdoor classroom ele-

ments in the fall and spring." In urban areas there is a lot of pavement and when water hits it, it flows into local water courses along with any contaminates. But non-paved areas allow water to be absorbed through the ground and naturally filtered, protecting drinking water while beautifying the space, she added.

Good riddance to employee discount tax idea Hopefully, by now, employees in Canada’s retail sector - or what remains of it, at least - can breathe a little easier knowing the Canada Revenue Agency isn’t poised to take aim at the discounts they receive from their employers. Such incentives, which range from the meagre - a small percentage off the retail price of a given item, for example - to the generous - such as being able to buy merchandise at the employer’s cost - are commonplace in the customer service industry and serve as something of an enticement for would-be employees in a sector where a great many of the front-line staff members are paid minimum wage. Given that, it seemed the CRA was effectively talking about flipping retail workers upside down and shaking them by the ankles until their loose change fell out. The controversy began earlier this month when a 2016 update to CRA documents, stating that employees who receive a discount on the price of merchandise owing to their employment should have the value of said discount included in their income, was thrust in the spotlight via a Globe and Mail story. The policy went on to say the value of the benefit should be calculated as the difference between the retail price of the item less the amount the employee paid. No amount would be included in the event the same discount was offered to members of the public in some manner. Business groups, some of whom had decried the notion when it first came up but whose objections largely went unnoticed, argued it would be a nightmare to track their employees’ discounts, while other stakeholders voiced concern that employment incentives could be scrapped altogether by companies simply to avoid the aggravation. Despite a Liberal MP initially suggesting that any employee discount not offered to the public at some point would be fair game under the new rules, the federal government quickly distanced itself from the policy, expressing "disappointment" in CRA bureaucrats, and prompted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to tweet assurances to retail workers that their discounts weren’t in the crosshairs. The government, in consultation with industry stakeholders, will now go back and review the policy and craft a new response to the 2011 court ruling that triggered the update in the first place. In any case, after the PR mess, it’s safe to say the idea of taxing retail employee discounts won’t soon be resurrected, and that’s a good thing. It was a wrong-headed idea that unfairly targeted workers in a sector primarily comprised of people at the lower end of the income spectrum.

• LETTERS & COMMENTARY • Greater understanding of special needs needed Re: Class struggle, Oct. 5. I just saw your great article in the paper. I am a special-needs parent and someone who is helping out in the school. From reading your article and what I have seen, it is a combination where the teachers don’t understand the special needs and lack of support in the school system. The school day can be very overwhelming for our kids. At times, these behaviours are a way for the kids to communicate that they are overwhelmed. I believe the system misses that point at times. With there being inadequate supports in the schools, our kids are not

taught good coping skills to deal with how they feel. I am troubled when I see teachers ask for protective gear. I agree with Clegg that isn’t necessary. That would only create a bad feeling among our kids. Basically, in order to fix, there needs to be more understanding of special needs and why behaviour comes about, as well as much better supports. Classroom violence a growing problem Re: Class struggle, Oct. 5. Great story in this week’s paper Teresa Latchford. But, the majority of parents that have, or had, children in the school system know about those problems. The oldest of us (grandparents perhaps) are the

ones with the answers. You need to talk to them to find the cure. My own thoughts would be, how long has it been since a parent, {spanking a child, lovingly of course, to teach right from wrong when needed} was considered the right thing to do by the majority of the population? And what year was spanking a child considered harmful and first addressed in our modern courts? And what has resulted in society since then? But those are my thoughts. How/when will it end? I do not believe an answer will occur in our lifetime. But the problem will definitely grow until a solution is developed. But eventually it will happen. Especially if the government one day decides they have to raise the children, rather than their parents,

in order for them to be brought up accordingly to society’s expectations. Joel Foote

Tech Expo connected local businesses with IT experts LAURA FINNEY lfinney@yrmg.com Local lawyer Susan Tucker said the Aurora Chamber Tech Expo made her feel "empowered." "It’s been phenomenal; really, really helpful," she said. Like many others who run a business or company, she relies on technology. "I’m not very technically proficient," she said. "But you are forced to pick it up." She attended the second annual expo which brought over 20 exhibitors

to King’s Riding Golf Club on Oct. 19. "They really impart a lot of information to you," she said. That is part of the idea behind it, said Roman Kantar, owner of The Tech Zone and lead sponsor of the expo. While a lot of the focus was about connecting members of the local businesses community with technology companies, he said it was also about education. "It’s not just to have an exposition where we are showing products or services, but more to help ed-

ucate small businesses on how to use IT to make your life better," he said. While he acknowledged technology can be "scary" for a lot of people, it is essential and needs to be maintained. "Technology is a living, breathing thing, and unless it’s taken care of properly, then you are going to have issues and problems," he said, adding it is critical to businesses. "You can’t take a payment, you can’t send an email; whatever the case, technology has become a part of our lives, not just at work."

Sandra Watson, events manager with the chamber, said it was important to attract local vendors. "We’re trying to make it a little bigger, a little more integrated with the York Region tech sector," said Carol Green, co-chair of the Aurora Chamber Tech Expo committee. According to Statistics Canada, York Region is the largest information and communications technology hub per capital in Canada. Despite this, Green said there is not really anything major from the tech section in the northern six York Region communities. By hosting these expos,

Every year, we wear our poppies with pride and share in a moment of silence on November 11 to honour those who bravely fought for our country and our freedom. While Newmarket was only a small village of under 3,000 people during the First World War, our response to the war was mighty. More than 470 Newmarket residents enlisted during the war and more than 80 were killed in action. This year, in recognition of the centenary of WWI, the Town of Newmarket has created a special Path of Remembrance. Mercedes fuel cell goes into preproduction Metroland Media Mercedes-Benz has shown preproduction models of the new GLC F-CELL as the next milestone on the road to emission-free driving. Under the technology designation EQ Power, the latest electric model (destined for subsequent series production) is set to combine innovative fuel cell and battery technology. As a plug-in hybrid, in addition to hydrogen, the all- electric variant of the popular SUV will also run on electricity. Intelligent interplay between battery and fuel cell, along with short refueling times, will in future make the GLC F-Cell a vehicle of high everyday practicality and also suitable for longdistance motoring.

left MercedesBenz has started preproduction of the GLC F-Cell as its latest electric model.

With 4.4 kg of hydrogen on board, the preproduction model produces enough energy for a range of up to a possible 437 km in the NEDC.

F-Cell drivers will also benefit from a range of up to 49 km in the NEDC thanks to the large lithium-ion battery. An output of 147 kW guar-

antees both dynamic performance and locally zero emissions driving pleasure. In unveiling the preproduction vehicles of the Mercedes-Benz GLC F-CELL, Daimler is taking another important step as part of its systematic “CASE” strategy. Fuel-cell technology is a firm element of Daimler’s powertrain strategy. Under the EQ product brand, the company is pooling its know-how related to intelligent electric mobility while offering a comprehensive e-mobility ecosystem of products, services, technologies and innovations. Between now and 2022, Daimler intends to bring out ten battery-electric vehicles, globally, with the GLC F-Cell representing an important landmark.

I have had a painful ingrown toenail for awhile and medicine calms it down but it has not healed. What can I do?

I want to straighten my teeth but I don’t like the look of the heavy metal braces and I don’t like the idea of having food caught in my braces. Are there any other options for straightening my teeth?

When are Remembrance Services being held this year?

Ingrown toenails can often be caused by tight footwear, injury to the nail, or over curvature of the nail. When the nail grows into the skin, it can cause swelling, infection and pain. While medications can calm down the symptoms, often the toe cannot heal without proper treatment. The skin that was punctured cannot heal when the offending part of the nail is obstructing the healing process, so often removal of part of the nail may be needed. It is best to consult with a chiropodist (foot specialist) regarding the appropriate treatment options as each case can vary. SARAH CHAN, chiropodist/foot specialist 200 Davis Drive, Unit #1 Newmarket, ON L3Y 2N4 905-830-1010

When should I put my snow tires on? We recommend having your snow tires installed by the end of October or beginning of November. Beat the rush! Most major fleets have their snows installed before Halloween and remove them by April 1st. Remember to have your car checked for winter at the same time! Did you also know that some insurance companies offer reduced premiums for having 4 snow tires installed on your vehicle?

Invisible braces are an alternative to the traditional metal braces. Invisalign is a type of orthodontic treatment that helps to straighten teeth without the use of the typical metal braces. The treatment involves wearing a series of custom-made clear plastic aligners that help shift your teeth into the proper position. There are many advantages of Invisalign over traditional metal braces: Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible. No one may even notice that you’re wearing them. There are no metal brackets or wires that could cause irritation to your mouth. You have the flexibility to remove your aligners to eat and drink what you want during treatment. You can also remove the aligners to brush and floss as you normally would. Since your office visits during treatment don’t involve metal or wire adjustments, you’ll likely spend less time in the doctor’s chair.

The Royal Canadian Legion and the Newmarket Veterans Association are jointly hosting this years Remembrance Day Service. It is on Saturday, November 11, 2017, 2:00 p.m., at the cenotaph on D’arcy Street. A parade will form at 1:30 p.m. where the Farmer’s Market is located, and then proceed to the cenotaph site for the memorial service. When my carpeting is installed, will the seams be invisible?

Should I fight this ticket myself? Granted you have the right to defend yourself in traffic court, however, I don’t advise it. There is little or no tolerance, by insurance companies, for infractions on your record and the courts are exercising their power where penalties are concerned. There are very few tickets that I would recommend you take care of yourself. Hire a professional in the field to take care and fix your problems. It is important to know your options…I always recommend that you take advantage of my FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION. When you want Professional Representation on traffic matters, call... While sometimes carpet seams can be “invisible”, you cannot guarantee this. The installer is taking two or more pieces of carpet and putting them together. Long, loose piled carpets such as shags are actually easier to disguise seams than on a short, tightly constructed carpet. Carpet seams should be cut straight, leaving as many carpet tufts in the seam area as possible. The seam edges should be sealed to prevent delamination, then seamed flat using a good quality hot melt seam tape. Once the seam has cooled, the carpet installation can continue. Please note: The ad from September 28th was printed incorrectly. Metroland would like to apologize for the confusion

Do you believe in ghosts? 5 ’haunted’ sites that might convince you ALI RAZA aliraza@yrmg.com Whether you believe in ghosts or not, it’s a fun and scary - thought to entertain around Halloween. Paranormal investigator Lynda Quirino from the Georgina Paranormal Society says there are ghosts and spirits haunting various parts of York Region, some she and her

team have witnessed. We gathered a list of five sites in York Region that are allegedly haunted and here they are: Sharon Temple (East Gwillimbury) The Sharon Temple was built in 1832 and is a designated National Historic Site of Canada. Though it’s not technically haunted, people have reported hear-

ing sounds of a large feast being prepared, music and footsteps. Quirino calls a "residual" haunting, imprinted in the character of the building. "It was a large gathering place, a lot of things happened there," she said. "It’s an energetic imprint." Eaton Hall (King) The house once belonged to Lady Eaton, wife

of department store magnate John Craig Eaton, and it is believed that she still roams the grounds with other ghosts. It was built in 1938 and Quirino has had her own strange encounters there. "It had a really charged atmosphere," she said. "I knocked on the door of a little room, and someone said ’Hey!’ but no one was in the house with me." Heintzman House (Thornhill) Built around 1817, it’s one of the oldest homes in the Greater Toronto Area. Author John Robert Colombo writes in Mysteries of Ontario that it’s haunted by Colonel Cruikshank, Thanks for Choosing Us As A Reader’s Choice Winner!

there, and women reported their towel missing after they showered," Quirino said. Could the ghost of Stephen Leacock be playing a prank? Maybe, she says.

the first owner of the property. "This tall, slightly bent man wearing a leather jerkin appeared in the upper hall overlooking the foyer. His expression was one of anger, as though he resented being disturbed by this noisy group of strangers occupying his home," Colombo writes.

ARTS & REC Henry Harrison House (Newmarket) Known as the Grey Goat Pub today, the Henry Harrison House was built in 1865. The owners of the pub are seeking to organize ghost tours after employees and visitors reported seeing and hearing things, Quirino said. It is believed that the pub is haunted by a ghost who makes sounds in the basement, slams doors and appears as an outline of an elderly lady.

Stephen Leacock Theatre (Georgina) Quirino says Stephen Leacock may haunt his theatre. She said people have reported feeling things and in specific cases, an unknown spirit would steal the towels in the female dressing rooms. "The dressing room would be locked, no one would be

the chamber on its 160th year. To keep things upbeat, a performance by Hitmen Drumline preceded the announcement of the first award recipients. Myostat Motion Control was presented with the Innovation of the Year Award, given to a business for successfully introducing an idea, process or initiative that has been proven to make a genuine difference on an organization or the community, according to presenter Sean Stephens. "Innovation is not about doing extraordinary things today, but doing ordinary things tomorrow," he said. "It’s about going off script when you were specifically told not to." North Newmarket Lions serves 3,500 people every year, snagging it the Not-ForProfit of the Year Award and Align Health Centre was announced as the Professional Services Business of the Year. Timeless Harmony Salon and Spa accepted New Business of the Year and Atlas owner Dino Kotsikas was presented with the Young Professional of the Year Award. When he took to the stage, his acceptance speech rang true for many of the recipients and fellow business owners in the audience. He spoke of his family being his universe and how each member is like a planet, but most importantly his wife, who has supported him since the beginning. "Life revolves around my wife Anna, so as long as she doesn’t implode and turn into a black hole, it will be OK," he said. The majority of the recipients attributed their business success to having a supportive family. Manufacturer of the year was given to Bloomsbury Fine Cabinetry, Canco ClimateCare was small business of the year and Unity Connected Solutions received the large business of the year award. Real Marketing Group took home the entrepreneur of the year award hardware and CPG Aerospace was named employer of the year. THE2017sAREGOINGFAST

Football’s future does not bode well for Huron Heights Any time. Any place. Any team. That is, approximately, the rallying cry for the Huron Heights Warriors football program. Trouble is, getting finding takers to their standing offer to play ball is no easy task. In the ongoing quest to create an enhanced schedule, the Warriors serve notice they are always open for business on a football field. Heck, team members even wear T-shirts bearing words to that effect. The York Region Athletic Association (YRAA) regular season schedule and playoff amounts to six games. That’s plenty for some programs in the six-team league, but barely half what the Warriors desire. Huron Heights will play in the YRAA final for the 14th straight season and, most likely, an Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations series bowl game. To enhance their play time is one thing; finding in-season rivals is no simple task. As the rest of YRAA leans toward a six-versussix format alternative, perhaps as early as the 2018 season, the Warriors are actively looking to explore new avenues for their program which in many respects has outgrown its current league. Finding a league in which to participate is the ideal scenario. Easier said

JOHN CUDMORE Cuddy Shark than done, however. The other option is to compile an independent schedule and try to put together a reasonable slate of games by playing teams on bye weeks or also looking to complement their schedules. Neither option carries a guarantee. Both fall in the iffy category. The appetite some may have for creating a super league, or joining another, brings with it a series of issues ranging from potential eligibility reforms to costs to feasibility. Admirable for its ballsy creativity, an independent slate of games is no way to go through a football season, uncertain from week to week if games will be played. In fact, with league commitments foremost to most school teams, it is easy to schedule but later ditch inseason exhibition games, which don’t offer points. The Warriors, who are regarded currently as a top 10 public school team in Canada, have learned this the hard way since three

potential opponents reversed on commitments already this season. In-season opponents may balance playing a top team such as Huron Heights against the best interests of its team in league standings. Avoiding injury is much simpler if a bye week is used for purposes other than playing a game. Sidestepping bruised egos is equally convenient. "We are perceived as being very strong, and lights out," said Warriors head coach Al Rover in a recent conversation. "But we’re not. Some guys are so worried about their rankings. "It’s frustrating. It’s easy to (cancel) when it’s not a league game." Whatever happened to lining up and just playing football to see who is best? The best answer, and most stable option, is to have a league in which to play. But where? Who is going to be willing to take on an outsider? Can Huron Heights even gain permission to leave YRAA for another league? There exist many hurdles to overcome. Despite the hard work that has made the Warriors’ program one to be admired for its structure, organization and support, the future is by no means certain. It’s sad to ponder the options.

McMULLAN, Robert Michael December 13, 1954 - October 20, 2017 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Mike McMullan in the early morning hours of October 20, 2017 at the age of 62. Beloved husband to Evelyn, big brother to Erin (Paul), cherished father to Spencer (Brianne) and Cameron, special Grandpa to Brock and Holly, stepfather to Parise, and uncle to Cody. Donations in lieu of owers can be sent with gratitude to Crohns and Colitis Canada. A private service will be held on Saturday October 28, 2017.

Memoriam

MORTON, Murray August 7, 1954 - October 26, 2007 On this the tenth anniversary, Of that fateful day... We can’t forget that fateful day, You had to leave, you went away. A sadness ďŹ lled us up inside, Emotions that we could not hide. Tears they came, sadness too, All of our emotions, just for you. Time will heal, so we were told, But time can never ďŹ ll this hole. Here in our hearts, there is a place, You are always there, Keeping us safe. It’s ďŹ lled with love and happy times, Its never dark, your light, it shines. In heaven now, you do reside, To watch over us, With love and pride. We know one day we’ll meet again, Until we do just know how much we miss you and you are always with us. Murray, ten years have passed, but memories stay... Love and remembered everyday. ~Loving you always, Sharon, Chris and Andrea.
