Local teens want to get girls into technology
LAURA FINNEY lfinney@yrmg.com When Grade 12 student Maya Bishop and her younger sister Amanda hear people say girls shouldn’t go into technology fields, they get angry, and motivated. "If someone tells me I can’t do something, I want to prove them wrong," said Maya, who aspires to be a computer engineer. The two Aurora High School students want to learn more, and help girls learn more about the technology field. "It is not a job just for guys, it is a job for everyone," said Maya.
So they are hosting Why Code Aurora, a night of women empowering girls through code; an informative night featuring a panel of six women in technology. It’s open to anyone, but aimed at girls from grades 5 to 12. "We found out by Grade 5 that’s when girls start eliminating career choices," said Amanda. The sisters first got the idea to host the event when Maya was looking into universities and started asking about the amount of women in their technology programs. "I knew there was a bit of a gender gap, but I didn’t know how much," she said, adding one school told her they had a 20 per cent female ratio. "They were so proud." But she realized those numbers were reflected in her computer science and computer engineering classes she had taken in high school.

sad that we are living in 2017 and we still have people with these beliefs that women aren’t as good," said Maya. "The problem with that thinking is then girls sometimes think, oh I can’t go into those fields because it’s a male field," said Amanda, adding girls might think they cannot do math and they are not smart enough. "But they are." Why Code Aurora will be taking place Oct 24 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Aurora High School. To register visit eventbrite.ca or their Facebook group.
Susie Kockerscheidt/Metroland
Aurora High School students Maya Bishop, 16 (front), and her sister Amanda, 15, are running an event at their school on Oct. 24 meant to inspire young girls to consider technology as a career option. Amanda is in Grade 10, and is not sure what she wants to do when she is older, but she does not want to limit her choices. "There are going to be so many jobs in the technology field in the future," she said. "I want to find out what they are so then I can know if they are suitable for me." They started looking for women to invite to their
event in the summer, but ran into some challenges. "It was quite hard to find speakers," said Amanda. They made phone calls and visited tech companies in Toronto looking for women interested in participating. They got their breakthrough when they found Wendy Foster, director of data products at Wattpad. She had been mentioned in an article about women in technology, that also in-
cluded information about other women in the field. The sisters said the women they invited have been supportive. So have their principal and teachers. But not everyone feels that way. This summer, an engineer at Google wrote a memo arguing that gender inequality in technology is because of biological differences. "I think it is just sort of

ario D’Addese stood at the window of Fame Men’s Hairstylist Oct. 16 to catch a glimpse of the show. The barber and owner Prime Minister of the Justin Trudeau’s shop on announcement in Main Stouffvillle Monday Street in Stouffville to lower the small business tax rate watched as a crowd from 10.5 to 9 per cent was met with gathered in front of indifference from Pastaggio local businesses. Italian Eatery to greet Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He was on hand with cavalcade of high profile ministers, including Finance Minister Bill Morneau and Markham-Stouffville MP and Minister of Indigenous Services Jane Philpott, to announce the federal government’s plan to reduce the small business tax rate from 10. 5 per cent to 9 per cent in 2019. "This tax cut will support Canada’s small businesses so that they can keep more of their hard earned money," Trudeau said at the news conference. Finance Minister Bill
Mike Barrett/Metroland
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is mobbed by fans at Pastaggio Italian Eatery in Stouffville after making an anouncement on taxation along with Finance Minister Bill Morneau Monday. Morneau said the move could give small businesses in Canada up to an additional $7,500. The announcement came after the federal Liberals received extensive criticism from special interest groups, namely doctors and farmers, for proposed changes to the tax system. "We know that our current system just isn’t fair. It rewards people who are
successful more than it rewards people who are working hard to be successful," Morneau said. As Trudeau left Stouffville in his black motorcade, D’Addese was still the window watching. He said the 1.5-per-cent cut would change very little for him. The municipal property tax on his business has gone from $3,400 when he moved in to $15,000. Increasing hydro
and water rates have also put the squeeze on. "I have to work an extra hour. Do two more haircuts," he said. The 1.5-per-cent cut will amount to very little actual money back in his business, he said. Just as D’Addese finished talking, Morneau walked into his shop, shook his hand and told him the government was lowering his taxes. D’Addese informed the minister
his costs were going up regardless of the announcement. Morneau told him they couldn’t solve everything. "He certainly got out of here quick," D’Addese said with a laugh. It was much the same story at Velvet Sunrise Coffee Roasters on Ringwood Drive in Stouffville. A pleasant espresso aroma wafted out of the backroom where Mark Hayward was roasting a fresh batch of coffee beans. The proposed tax cut represents very little actual money for Velvet Sunrise, Hayward said. "It’s not that much because we don’t make a lot of profit," he said. Last year, he said they paid more than $3,000 in taxes to the federal government. He’s far more concerned about a proposed increase in minimum wage and the spiking hydro rates than the federal small business tax rate. That’s not to say Hayward didn’t think the tax cut was a good thing. It just doesn’t end up making much of any difference for him in the grand scheme of things. George Hughes, chair of the Aurora Chamber of Commerce board of directors said the announcement was "smoke
and mirrors."While the tax cut will be of some benefit to the local business owners, they want more details, he said. "I am not satisfied with the response that I’ve heard. I was happy that they are coming through with a campaign promise...with a tax reduction for small businesses," he said. "But I am still waiting for the details on the other changes that have been put forward." Changes that relate to capital gains, income sprinkling and investments within a small corporation, he said. "We were looking for details of any changes or reactions to the oppositions that we have been presenting to the Prime Minister and the finance minister, and those details were not provided at the press conference." The tax rate will drop from 10.5 per cent to 10 percent in January, then 9 per cent in 2019. "It becomes one of those campaign promises that is so far out in the future," he said. "That half a per cent of reduction of federal tax is helpful, but not enough. It does not come close to compensating us for all the other changes that they want to implement."

scious and not breathing, and others calling 9-1-1 and clearing the pool area. "They started working on him right away and after what seemed like forever, they finally got a pulse," his wife recalls. "All the staff were so caring and they are Fred’s guardian angels." The centre’s staff administered CPR and used the automated external defibrillator. Central York Fire Services and York Region Paramedics arrived and Osti was transported to the hospital for further treatment. Osti got to thank his angels as the town recognized lifeguards
Adrian Bunyi, Jennifer Savov and Glenda Wilcock, community program co-ordinator Jodi Alexander, aquatics co-ordinator Terri Edwards, lifeguard Nicole Lawlor, customer service representative Courtney Levek, acting youth and community development co-ordinator Greg Peri for their quick thinking and life-saving efforts. Only two months later, the Aurora Public Library staff were required to use their live-saving training when patron Angelo DiPlessibo called 9-1-1 and alerted them to a man who had collapsed in the men’s washroom. Community collaboration manager Reccia Mandelcorn and
content, access and innovation manager Ashely Nunn-Smith administered CPR and used the defibrillator on Brian Golder until help arrived. "I just want to thank them for giving me a second chance at life," Golder said. Before this, the library staff had never had to put the training to the test but they were very grateful they had it when needed. "When an emergency happens, I think most people simply react in the moment," Mandelcorn said. "We are thankful for the positive outcome for such a lovely man and his family, and he will always be a treasured lifetime member of APL."

A reader asked, we found the answer. Do you have a question about your neighbourhood? Submit it at yorkregion.com/connect. A READER ASKS: Why is Bloomington Sideroad at Hwy. 404 sinking and cracking? Construction work was redone two years ago? Who is responsible? THE ANSWER FROM SALIM ALIBHAI, YORK REGION’S DIRECTOR OF CAPITAL PLANNING AND DELIVERY: To accommodate growth and increased travel demand, York Region widened Bloomington Road from Bathurst Street to west of Hwy. 404 (west of the rail bridge) in Aurora and Richmond Hill. Construction for the Bloomington Road widening began in July 2012 and the project was completed in April 2016. The section of Bloomington Road between Leslie Street and Hwy. 404 is built over swampland with poor soil conditions and water on both sides of the road. A period of settlement, when building over this type of ground conditions, is considered normal. With the new lanes being built adjacent to the existing two-lane road, which had settled over time, it was always anticipated there would be uneven settlement between the new and existing road until the ground conditions stabilize. Rehabilitation to the roadway will be performed when required.

ABOUT US
United Ways will be stronger together If ever there was proof that there is strength in numbers, it’s the results of the United Way fundraising campaigns in Toronto and York Region after the organizations amalgamated in 2015. Before they merged, the two charities separately raised a total of $97 million. Together, in 2015 they raised $100.2 million. And in 2016, that rose to $102 million. Now the United Way Toronto and York Region hopes to raise $103 million in its annual fundraising campaign, launched last week to fight poverty, build strong communities and help kids. The decision to combine organizations was clearly a good idea in 2015. And it raised the question of why more United Ways across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) don’t join forces to create one powerhouse charity working to create a better life for everyone in the region. Last week, that idea came a step closer to reality with the announcement that the boards of trustees of United Way Peel (representing Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon) and United Way Toronto and York Region have unanimously agreed to amalgamate. If members of Peel agree to it at a meeting on Oct. 26, the organizations will unite on April 1, 2018. That would be a welcome move, indeed. As Daniele Zanotti, CEO of the United Way Toronto and York Region, noted, the merger will allow those involved in United Way to do more to strengthen communities across the GTA: "Whether it’s giving young people the right start in life or solving local poverty, these issues aren’t contained to one spot on the map." Peel’s interim CEO and president, Anita Stellinga, believes the proposed merger, will strengthen their fundraising while also allowing them to continue to meet the needs of the communities they serve. She said there’s increasing competition for fundraising dollars and joining the world’s largest United Way in the Toronto York organization will give them greater reach. If approved, she feels it will increase her organization’s scope and give it a more impactful voice in the region while also better serving residents and their donors. The ability to raise more funds with a bigger regional agency is happy news for the hundreds of charities that depend on each of these United Ways for support. Indeed, last year, the United Way Toronto and York Region provided ongoing support for 220 local agencies, while Peel supports 53 agencies with a fundraising goal this year of $11.4 million. Whether those agencies house the homeless, feed the hungry or shelter the abused, they all deserve our support. The fall campaigns are now underway at all United Way agencies across the region. Please give generously. The community you build with your donations is ultimately your own.

• LETTERS & COMMENTARY • Terry Fox deserves place on mural I’m a Grade 5 student at Northern Lights Public School here in Aurora. My letter is regarding the concern of the mural on the corner of Wellington and Yonge. There are many amazing people on that mural, but one amazing person that stands out the most is not there, and that is Terry Fox. Here is a little information about his life. Terry was born on July 28, 1958 in Winnipeg, Man. He was the second child of Rolly and Betty Fox with an older brother named Jeff, a younger brother named Darrell and a younger sister named Judith. The family moved to British Columbia in 1968. Terry loved school and sports. When Terry was 18,
he was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma, a bone cancer that targets young, active boys. Terry’s right leg was amputated six inches above his knee. He learned to walk on his prosthetic leg and was able to leave the hospital. When he saw the kids and adults suffering, he decided to start training for the Marathon of Hope. Terry made a big accomplishment by challenging his body physically and mentally just to help others. He also was the first onelegged man to attempt to run across Canada. Most heroes are brave and Terry was, too. He ran a marathon a day for 42 days on one leg! Most people run a marathon once or twice a year. That would take over 20 years to run the amount he ran! Terry also helped a lot of people with cancer. Terry changed the way

people see cancer and other diseases. Terry had to stop running in Thunder Bay because the cancer had spread to his lungs. Terry passed away on June 28, 1981, a month before his 23rd birthday. Terry had a goal of raising one dollar per Canadian, but over the years we have passed his goal and raised over the amount, as annual Terry Fox runs take place here in Canada and all over the world. Terry Fox is not just a Canadian hero, he’s an international hero. That’s why I think he should be on the mural. Siera Zicaro, Aurora
Community Living project worthwhile Re: Filling the ’abyss’, Oct. 5.
I read with interest the article on page 5 of Oct. 5 paper. Thought it a very worthwhile project, yet nowhere in the article does it say where one could contribute some money. Kind of misses part of the point. Perhaps this could be rectified. The paper is awfully small these days. I understand the smaller size, but then shouldn’t it be thicker? The letter commentaries used to be about five and now only two. We gone from three papers to one paper to half a paper. What’s next? I still really enjoy reading the paper, despite all the technology. There’s always so much to keep up with in this town. The newspaper is an important communication tool. Keep up the good work! Don’t Flush your fats, region implores ADAM MARTIN-ROBBINS amartinrobbins@yrmg.com Are you left scratching your head in wonder about how to dispose of the gooey globs of fat left behind after you fry up a pound of bacon for breakfast or roast a whole chicken for dinner? It seems you’re not alone. The Ontario Clean Water Agency and the Clean Water Foundation have teamed up with a handful of municipal governments - including the Region of York and Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury - to launch a new public awareness campaign urging people not to pour fat, oil or grease down the drain or flush it down the toilet. Dubbed I Don’t Flush 2017, it’s the third phase of a campaign that previously focused on the proper disposal of unused pharmaceuticals and the proper way to dispose of personal hygiene products. The new campaign includes a public service announcement video urging people to: cool it, scrape it, green bin it.
When disposing of fats, oil and grease (FOG) - including meat fat, butter and margarine, milk and cream, sandwich spreads, salad dressing, sauces and gravies - the agencies recommend allowing it to cool in pans then scraping it into the green bin. In the case of liquid FOG, pour it into containers (tin cans, empty coffee cans or milk cartons), leave it to harden then scrape into the green bin. If you don’t have a green bin, throw it in the trash or consult your municipality for other options. Improper disposal of fats, oil and grease, especially when combined with flushing personal hygiene products, can lead to costly repairs and have a larger impact on local wastewater facilities, the agencies say. Canadian municipalities spend more than $250 million a year removing garbage from sewer systems, according to the Municipal Enforcement Sewer Use Group. "It’s extremely important the public understands that sinks

LESS IS QUITE ENOUGH IN THE AMG E43 4MATIC FIRST DRIVE

Metroland Media Some drivers are never satisfied when it comes to the horsepower of their vehicles. The more the better, they say. Yet there are others who can manage quite nicely with less power as long as they have a vehicle that is tuned for spirited performance when they want it. As I grow older, I find myself falling in with that crowd more and more. It’s that way with Mercedes-Benz automobiles and their famed AMG lineup of vehicles. In particular, after spending a week with the 2017 AMG E43 4MATIC Sedan, I was left with the feeling that it has everything I could want— a great combination of power, luxury, technology and good looks all wrapped up in one neat package. With 396 hp and 384 lb/ft of torque from its biturbo V6 engine, the power of the E43 pales in comparison with its E63 sibling that generates 603 hp from its thundering V8 with dual twin-scroll turbochargers. Yet during my time with the E43, I never was left feeling shortchanged on get-up-and-go. When I needed ac-

Most readers will know all about AMG, but for the uninitiated, it is the performance arm of Mercedes-Benz, based in Affalterbach, Germany. They build some of the most sought-after cars in the world with models ranging from coupes to sedans and even SUVs. Based on the all-new tenth-generation EClass sedan, the E43 4MATIC gets the AMG treatment with a host of performance tweaks that take the twin-turbo V6 up from the 329 hp as found in the E400 4MATIC Sedan. With its 4MATIC all-wheel drive system and nine-speed automatic transmission, the E43 has been tweaked to offer quicker shifts and with about 70 per cent of the power going to the rear axle. The AMG treatment also gives it different front and rear bumpers from the regular E-Class sedan, quad exhaust tips, a trunk lid spoiler and additional AMG badging. Inside there is a distinctive leather-wrapped steering wheel, red stitching on the seats, door panels and dash and a few other clues that this is something different from the ordinary sedan. Standard fare includes the AMG Dynamic Select drive system that features five modes, activated via a toggle switch on the centre console. Sport and Sport+ modes are designed for high vehicle dynamics and Comfort, ECO and Individual round out the five available modes. The cabin has the look and feel of luxury with rich black Nappa leather upholstery with the contrasting red stitching. The seats themselves are a work of art, offering everything from massage features to active side bolsters that keep you firmly planted in tight corners or when navigating roundabouts that are becoming so popular these days. Another striking feature is the dashboard
with its man-made black Artico leather, again with contrasting red stitching. Family members over Thanksgiving weekend were totally taken by the interior, particularly the LED ambient lighting that offers an amazing 64 colours and the massive 12.3-inch infotainment display screen with super clear graphics that sits at the top of the centre stack. Front and centre for the driver is a customizable high-resolution widescreen digital instrument cluster with a pair of tube-style round dials flanking a screen providing all kinds of relevant information. New for 2017 on the E-Class is a touch sensitive control button on the steering wheel that responds to horizontal or vertical swiping motions, similar to a smart phone interface. This allows the driver to control the entire infotainment system from the steering wheel. The nine-speed automatic is a slick piece of equipment, changing gears virtually seamlessly. Steering wheel mounted paddles are there for those that crave the need to shift manually. The AMG-tweaked sport suspension with Air Body Control offers precise body control with little perceptible roll on tight corners, enhanced by the updated all-wheel drive system. The ride is more on the sporty than comfort side, particularly with the low-profile tires on the snazzy 20-inch AMG multi-spoke wheels. Our tester was enhanced with the Premium Package ($6,200), Technology Package ($2,600) and AMG Driver’s Package ($1,000) taking the as-tested price to $89,700. Drivers with deep pockets and the burning desire to go fast will undoubtedly opt for the AMG E63 model. However, the tamer E43 4MATIC may be the perfect choice for many buyers who want to break into the AMG lineup and up the performance quotient over the standard E-Class offerings.

Tour guide Erin Wrightson points to Newmarket’s Old Town Hall where ghosts have been in the windows above since the 1880s. Guests were also ushered on a walking tour of Main Street to learn about the many suspicious events and anecdotes that have occured in the area.
Bayview Ave.
Are there ghosts in Newmarket’s Old Town Hall? Many people think so, including Lynda Quirino, executive director of the Georgina Paranormal Society. "Our experience is that there appears to be some kind of ambience energy in that building," she said. "Last year we did manage to interact with it." The society hosts investigations during the Ghosts of Old Town Hall, a sold-out tour that takes place every Wednesday in October. "We actually share suspicious events and anecdotes that have happened throughout downtown," said Colin Service, director of recreation and Culture with the Town of Newmarket. The tour explores Main Street and ends in the basement of Old Town Hall. "At one time, there were jail cells down there," said Service. "It used to be a police station, and that is where people were held." And that is where the Paranormal Society con-
that have come through and actually spoken," said Quirino. "Often they will respond to your questions." She said it feels "incredibly special" to connect with people who have died. "To glimpse into another realm of existence is definitely not something that most people experience," she said. Quirino has been involved with paranormal investigations for years, and started the society in 2012. "The Georgina Paranormal Society actually helps people who believe that they have experienced something that they can’t explain or something paranormal," she said adding many times people may feel crazy. "We are kind of a safe place they can go to." The group is made of volunteers, and they do not charge for their services. Of course, she has met skeptics. "There are a lot of people that often to say to us, there are logical explanations for everything," she said, but added the group is very open minded, and try to find those logical explanations. "We’re pretty skeptical." Their meetings are open to the public. For more information, visit georginaparanormalsociety.weebly.com.

ducts their investigation. "Last year they were able to communicate with a spirit that was apparently male, he didn’t understand that the year was 2016" said Service. "He indicated he was very happy living at Old Town Hall. That he was a prisoner there who had been wrongly convicted of a crime." Quirino said that spirit might not be the only one. "That was one of the ones that we contacted, but there appears to be more spirit," she said. "Because spirit tends to come and go and spirit is attracted to spirit, it would appear there are other things . that come in and out of that space." Service said a lot of people have had reported encounters at the building. "Town Hall is an interesting building because it has led a lot of different lives," he said. "With that rich history, and all the different things that have happened there, there are all sorts of people that have stories." The society uses a number of tools during their investigation including electromagnetic field detectors, thermal cameras, voice recorders and spirit boxes which use white noise to communicate with spirits. "We’ve had lot of voices

Trio of inductees on call list for Newmarket hall JOHN CUDMORE jcudmore@yrmg.com Make room for three on the wall. Peter Orr, Jim Richardson and a powerhouse minor hockey team that dominated its category over a series of years will be ushered into the Newmarket Sports Hall of Fame during an induction ceremony and luncheon Nov. 12 at the municipal offices. Raised in Newmarket, Orr played in the Newmarket Baseball Association for several years before moving on to play 17 seasons of professional baseball, including 443 games over an eight-season span in the major leagues for the Atlanta Braves, Philadephia Phillies and Washington Nationals Orr hit for a .257 average and fielded at a .971 rate in the majors before retiring from pro baseball in 2016. He also represented Canada internationally at the 2004 Summer Olympics and 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, where he scored the goldmedal winning run against the United States. Orr also played for Canada at four World Baseball Classic tournaments. Richardson will enter the hall in the builders category. He was a soccer pioneer and founding member of the Newmarket Soccer Club. The native of England arrived in Canada in 1947 and moved to Newmarket in the early 1950s. Richardson helped introduce soccer to Newmarket and served in player and administration roles for the local program and provincial bodies. Currently residing in British Columbia, he was inducted into the York Region Soccer Association’s hall of fame in 2016. Few teams dominated its age group like the Newmarket Minor Hockey Association’s Burgess Wholesale-sponsored team in the 1980s. The squad of 1967-born players highlighted its dominance by capturing three Ontario Minor Hockey Association championships in a six-year span starting in 1981 at the peewee age group. The team also reached the OMHA final on one other occasion. During an eight-year span, from minor atom, the team finished atop the York Simcoe Minor Hockey League standings in all eight seasons.
